Red Dead Redemption 2 - the fast travel map in camp

Fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes on a few different forms. In this guide, we’ll teach you about them all.

Each one will prove useful in its own way as you travel the vast expanse of Red Dead Redemption 2 ’s world. After all, the scenic route — riding everywhere on Arthur Morgan’s horse — will get old eventually.

Stagecoaches and trains

Stagecoaches and trains are forms of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 , but they’ll cost you. Literally. For a fee, you can hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket.

The stagecoach icon on the Red Dead Redemption 2 map

Stagecoaches appear on the map as an icon that looks like two intersecting street signs. (It’s called a “taxi coach” in the menu that appears when you hover over it.) For a nominal fee that increases (as far as we can tell) based on distance from your current location, you can take a stagecoach to locations you’ve previously visited.

The post office icon for trains Red Dead Redemption 2

If you want to catch a train, you’ll need to buy a ticket. ( Unless you don’t .) You’d think you’d be looking for a train station, but you might also be looking for a building sitting next to a train track. In one town, Rhodes, what you’re actually looking for is the post office icon (which looks like an envelope). Talk to the clerk inside, and you can purchase a ride on a very Old West kind of transportation.

Actual fast travel

Traditional video game fast travel becomes available after you upgrade your lodgings at the Van der Linde Gang’s camp.

Head to the icon in camp that looks like a briefcase with a dollar sign on it. (It says “Donate to camp” when you hover over it on your map.) There are three upgrades to purchase on the lodging page. The second one, “Next in Line,” costs $325 and says that “Arthur wants a map to help plan journeys.” This is a reference to fast travel.

Buy that upgrade, and you’ll find a map on the back of the stagecoach next to Arthur’s bed. Approach it and interact, and you’ll be able to travel to several destinations — a mixture of towns and significant locations like buildings.

Keep in mind that this form of fast travel only works one way — from camp to somewhere else. If you fast travel from camp to, say, a town on the opposite side of the map, you’ll either need to ride your horse, hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket to get back.

Fast Travel

Fast Travel is a mode of travel in Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online that allows players to traverse long distances across the map quickly. There are three main ways to fast travel, most of which cost money.

  • 1 Red Dead Redemption
  • 2.2 Stagecoach
  • 2.5 Missions
  • 3 Red Dead Online
  • 4 Cinematic Mode
  • 5 Known Bugs

Red Dead Redemption [ ]

In Red Dead , the player can fast travel by the means of a Stagecoach Taxi located in almost every settlement. For a price, they can be driven to any of the following locations and have the option to skip to destination.

Destinations are limited to the following:

  • Benedict Point
  • Las Hermanas
  • MacFarlane's Ranch
  • Rathskeller Fork
  • Ridgewood Farm

Fast Travel Map - Red Dead Redemption II

Arthur's Fast Travel map

Players have the option to upgrade Arthur Morgan 's camp lodgings, for a price, after the mission " Money Lending and Other Sins I ." The gang will do little to help in this regard, so the task falls to players. Upgrade options can be found next to Dutch van der Linde 's tent wherever the caravan ends up.

Players must pay the first $220 upgrade fee before the next tier evens shows up. It is this next tier, at $325, that unlocks the fast travel map, so players will need $545 total. Once purchased, Arthur's fast travel map appears outside his wagon or inside his room at Shady Belle during Chapter 4 . After completing the first part of the Epilogue, the Fast Travel map will become available free of charge (i.e. no upgrades are needed).

Alternatively to using the map, the player can fast travel using their camps. Upon setting up camp, the player is able to fast travel to the same places they could when using the map.

Note that destinations the player can travel to are entirely dependent upon where they have already been. Due to this, and that it is difficult to raise that amount of money in the early game, players may want to wait until they have traveled to more areas.

  • Armadillo (after Epilogue 1)
  • Beecher's Hope (after Epilogue 1)
  • Benedict Point (after Epilogue 1)
  • Blackwater (after Epilogue 1)
  • Braithwaite Manor
  • Butcher Creek
  • Caliga Hall
  • Cornwall Kerosene & Tar
  • Emerald Ranch
  • MacFarlane's Ranch (after Epilogue 1)
  • Manzanita Post
  • Pronghorn Ranch
  • Saint Denis
  • Thieves' Landing (after Epilogue 1)
  • Tumbleweed (after Epilogue 1)
  • Van Horn Trading Post
  • Wapiti Indian Reservation
  • The gang camp's locations from Chapter 2 to 6 ( Horseshoe Overlook , Clemens Point , Shady Belle , Lakay , and Beaver Hollow ; only available as long as the gang resides within those grounds )

On the side note, using Camp Fast Travel more than once per in-game day empties the player's horse's stamina core.

Stagecoach [ ]

Stagecoach - Red Dead Redemption II

Stagecoach option

Like Red Dead Redemption , Stagecoaches are another fast travel option, and they can be found in most towns. Unlike using the fast travel map, using a stagecoach requires money. Not only that, but players need to be aware of what their level of honor is for that particular town. If their honor is too low, the stagecoach will be locked.

Like the fast travel map, the player will only be able to travel to destinations he has already visited. Stagecoaches, however, cannot take players back to their camp.

  • Emerald Station

If the player wishes, they may also be able to fast travel via purchasing a train ticket at a train station. Tickets for the train, which only runs between select locations, can be purchased at the Post Office. Locations include:

  • Riggs Station
  • Wallace Station

Although traveling by train is noticeably cheaper than using stagecoaches, the reachable destinations are limited within three territories ( West Elizabeth , New Hanover , and Lemoyne ).

If the player is at the countryside of a state and wishes to go to its main town, another alternative of Fast Traveling is to vandal, or kill someone and, after arrival of lawmen, just surrender and they will take the player into the town. However, it will cost the player honor, money, and days in prison.

Missions [ ]

The last alternative option for fast travel comes at the end of some missions. This only requires completion of the mission and accepting the option to travel. Players can, of course, refuse the option if they have other matters to attend to, but this will prevent them from fast traveling back to their camp.

Red Dead Online [ ]

In Red Dead Online , the player can upgrade their camp with an Fast Travel post for $700.00 upon reaching Rank 65.

There are 15 fast travel locations on the map. The cost differs depending on the distance from the current destination.

Cinematic Mode [ ]

Cinematic Mode can be used as a form of "auto run" to reach destinations. To do this, the player must place a waypoint on the map, mount their horse, get up to speed on a road, and hold the touchpad/view button to engage Cinematic Mode. The player's horse will automatically navigate to the waypoint. While not "fast travel" properly said, it does allow the player to put down the controller for a few moments. However, hostiles like rival gangs , bounty hunters and predators will still attack, and sometimes the horse's A.I. fails to deal with traffic on the road as well. Any unique random encounter found by the road may also be lost if the player does not pay attention to them.

Known Bugs [ ]

  • As corpses aren't allowed inside the Van der Linde camp , if the player Fast Travels to it with a dead NPC on horseback, the game will instantly bug as soon as it starts the scene of the player entering its grounds.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel: How to unlock fast travel and other ways of travelling quickly

How to get around the world quickly with Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel is something you'll probably be asking about after your third or fourth long trek between destinations.

Though the game doesn't make a big song and dance about it, the good news is fast travel is in the game - though there is several caveats to how it works.

If you haven't unlocked fast travel yet, then there's other ways of getting round the map as well - allowing you to reach far-off destinations as soon as the game world opens up.

For more help, our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough explains the requirements for fully completing the game's many story missions.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Fast travel won't be available to you when you start Chapter 2, and has to be unlocked by progressing through the story, and then unlocking a few camp upgrades.

First, play through to mission Money Lending and Other Sins . Hand in your first debt, and you'll learn about the Ledger, allowing you to upgrade your camp .

You want to specifically upgrade Lodgings. Once you have upgraded it once, you'll have the option to upgrade Arthur's tent. Do so, and you'll unlock fast travel.

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

Of course, it isn't a simple case of selecting somewhere on the map and going there. You have to go to Arthur's tent - specifically, round the back - and view the map. Then, you select a location you've been to before, and you'll appear there, with your main horse , after a transition sequence.

What this means is, even with this unlocked, you cannot decide to jump from somewhere out in the wilderness to another destination - you still have to do that at a camp.

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

However, if you are close to a specific location, you can travel around the map through other means...

Other ways to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Whether you've unlocked fast travel from your camp (as described above) or not, there are other ways of jumping round the map.

One is by using the stagecoach . This is an icon with a signpost on it, and is usually at most towns, ranches and other named locations on the map.

Cover image for YouTube video

Provided you've been to that location previously, you can pay to use the stagecoach to that destination.

By the way, if it looks like the Stagecoach is unavailable (there will be a 'lock' symbol on the icon) it means you're likely in a mission, have to pay a bounty or are currently riding your horse - fix these things and you should be good to go.

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

The other method is by train . At most larger settlements there is a envelope icon, which indicates a train station. This is not only a postmaster and a place to pay your Wanted bounties, but you can also buy a train ticket to far away destinations.

Unlike the stagecoach, you can take the train to any destination on the list right from the start of Chapter 2 (where the game begins to open up). Not only that, it's usually cheaper than the stagecoach - so if you're somewhere where you have the choice of both, grab the train.

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

Of course, though the train goes to more prominent locations and allows you to go there straight away, the stagecoach visits a lot of smaller ranches, so both come in handy.

Either way, both cost money, and since you'll be starting a lot of your trips from your camp, purchasing the camp upgrades to fast travel from there will be better in the long run.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

The Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel system is worth unlocking

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

The Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel system is your ticket to getting around the Old West quickly, without spending an extended period of time hitting the ol' dusty trail. While the vistas Rockstar have created as a setting for your adventures are nothing short of breathtaking at points, you will eventually reach a stage where you've seen enough of the sights along a familiar journey in Red Dead Redemption 2 and just want to get to your destination as soon as possible. With extensive distances separating the major towns and other points of interest, a method of transport that won't leave you saddle-sore by the time you arrive sounds pretty appealing.

Unfortunately, you can't just pick a destination on the map and jump there immediately, but with Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel you can at least move at speed between certain locations. There are restrictions in place, and the whole mechanic is not very well explained in the game, which is why we're here to show you how to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

To even get the opportunity to unlock fast travel, you’ll first need to complete Red Dead Redemption 2’s lengthy prologue, and reach the point where your gang has settled at camp and the open world has become available to explore in its entirety. This’ll allow you to upgrade your campsite with new features and progress markers, one of which is the option to unlock the travel map at Arthur’s lodge.

This can be accessed in the Ledger, which is introduced to you upon completing the first tax collection mission for Leopold Strauss, and found next to the donation box by Dutch’s tent. However, you’ll first need to upgrade Dutch’s tent for $220 on page six in the ledger, under Lodging, before you can even see the option to purchase fast travel. Do that, and the travel map will become available to purchase for $325 underneath the header titled “Next in Line.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Once you’ve purchased the Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel system, you’ll be able to teleport to any major city or point of interest that you’ve previously discovered on your own, such as Valentine, Strawberry or, yes, the much talked about Blackwater, provided you’ve gained access to it on foot. The best part is that your horse will come with you whenever you fast travel into an area, carrying everything you’ve stowed in their saddle, but the system ain’t perfect.

While you can fast travel from your gang’s campsite to anywhere that allows it, you aren’t able to do the inverse. In other words, you can’t travel back to your campsite from anywhere else, so make sure you’re ready for a long trip back if Arthur fast travels to a location several miles away from his homestead.

You also can’t fast travel to a city that’s on lockdown, which is when you’ve committed enough crimes to have the entire local law enforcement ready to take Arthur out if he shows his face. Otherwise, there’s always the train or carriage, which similarly lets you quickly hop from place to place though, unlike fast travel, this comes at a price for every trip taken.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Fast travel guide - How to unlock fast travel

How to get fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is a vast, complex beast and sometimes you won’t want to lug your horse halfway across the continent to start a mission. This is where having a method of fast travel comes in handy. While there’s no way of teleporting to discovered locations at any time from the map, there are several methods of transport that’ll certainly prove speedier than a horse.

Below we’ve put together a list of all the fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock them.

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Here’s how you can unlock fast travel:

  • You won’t be able to unlock fast travel until you start Chapter 2 in the main story.
  • The first step is to complete the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins”. Hand in your first debt, and you’ll be taught how the ledger can be used to upgrade your camp.
  • When you’ve got a free moment and enough camp cash, open up the ledger and flick to the Lodgings section. Upgrade it once, and you’ll have to the option to upgrade Arthur’s tent. Do this and you’ll unlock fast travel.

To use fast travel, go round the back of Arthur’s tent and view the map that’s there. Select a location that you’ve visited before and you’ll magically appear there along with your main horse.

Other methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two other ways of getting around the map quicker than normal: Stagecoach and train.

Unlocking fast travel from your camp is not a prerequisite! You can use these modes of transport from the beginning of Chapter 2.

How to use a stagecoach

  • There’s a signpost icon near all the major towns and cities in the game, and this is where you’ll find a stagecoach.
  • As long as you’ve been to a certain location previously, you can pay a fare to use the stagecoach to visit that specific destination.
  • If the signpost symbol is locked and greyed out, this means you’re unable to use the stagecoach until after you’ve dismounted from your horse or exited a mission state.

How to use a train

  • At most larger towns and cities there is an envelope icon. Head on over to these locations and you’ll be able to catch a train.
  • Using the train, you can travel to any destination on the list from the very beginning of Chapter 2. It’s also cheaper than the stagecoach too.

Getting Red Dead Redemption 2’s Platinum Is A Cowboy’s Worst Nightmare

9 games that deserve a native ps5 upgrade, marvel vs. capcom fighting collection's xbox skip may be due to engine problems.

Traveling the wild west on horseback in Red Dead Redemption 2 can be a beautiful experience, but it's also incredibly time-consuming. If you want to get to your destination as soon as possible, you're going to want to take advantage of the fast travel system. While it's not as straightforward as just picking a location on a map, its still an easier process than galloping through the desert.

Red Dead Redemption 2 offers players a few different methods of fast travel. The first is through purchasing a ticket for a stagecoach or train. Using this system is simple — make your way to the nearest ticket station and buy a ticket for your destination. The only requirement is that you have a few bucks to spare in order to make your purchase.

RELATED: Freeze To Death And Grunt About It In This Red Dead Redemption 2 Survival Mod

The other fast travel option available requires a bit of legwork before it can be used. First, players will have to upgrade Dutch's lodgings at their camp. This option can be found by opening the ledger at your campsite. Once his lodgings have been upgraded, a new option becomes available for purchase — a map upgrade. Buy the map upgrade and it will appear at your camp. Head on over to its location and you'll be able to access the fast travel option.

Of course, upgrading your camp isn't free. Dutch's lodging upgrade will run you $220, while the map upgrade is listed at $325. If you are having trouble coming up with that kind of cash, we'd recommend going on a few hunts and landing a couple of perfect pelts .

These are the only methods of fast travel available in Red Dead Redemption 2 . Early in the game it's advisable to take the stagecoaches and trains as needed, since it will take quite a while to build up the income needed to unlock the map at your camp. However, once you do unlock it, you'll probably never need to spend money on a train ticket again.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There have been rumors that the game is in development for the Nintendo Switch , but nothing has been made official by Rockstar.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Tired of gallivanting on your horse all the time? Here's how to unlock and use fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

While it's fun to gallop through the countryside or run around a town, sometimes you just want to get somewhere fast. Getting to the various towns and regions in Red Dead Redemption 2 often means travelling across the massive map on horseback. However, there are ways to cut down on all that horsemanship and equine bonding.

There are two ways you can fast travel in RDR2 , but you can't just open up the map, choose a location and whisk yourself away at the drop of a hat. You'll either need to track down some public transport or work on those camp upgrades for the Van Der Linde gang, but to give you a helping hand, here's how to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

There are two methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2; you can use public transport such as stagecoaches and trains, or you can unlock the ability to fast travel from camp.

The former - travelling via public transport - is simple. All you need to do is make your way to the nearest ticket station, purchase a ticket to your chosen destination from the kiosk, and then off you go. This'll set you back a few dollars each time, but it definitely makes getting around the map a lot quicker.

Arthur looks at train station tickets at the Rhodes post office in Red Dead Redemption 2

You can also choose to fast travel from your camp , but you will need to upgrade your camp first. There are a few upgrades you can make, which you can read more about in our Red Dead Redemption 2 camp upgrade guide.

To specifically unlock fast travel, however, you'll need to do is head to the camp's money box and open up the ledger next to it. From there, upgrade Dutch's lodgings , which has the added benefit of inspiring other gang members to contribute more.

Arthur looks at the fast travel map at the Shady Belle camp in Red Dead Redemption 2

This will also unlock a map upgrade - this is how you fast travel. Buy that after upgrading Dutch's lodgings, and the map will appear in Arthur's area of the camp - its precise location is different depending on where your camp is located but it is usually close to Arthur's tent. Interact with the map and you'll then be able to choose from a list of destinations to travel to on your trusty steed.

It's $220 for Dutch's quarters and $325 for the map upgrade. The easiest way to get this sort of cash is to buy the upgrades after the gang's first big heist, or after finding a few gold bars.

Arthur looks at fast travel destinations while camping out in the wilderness in Red Dead Redemption 2

What's better is that once you unlock the map upgrade at camp, you can then easily fast travel anywhere for free. You can access the map from Arthur's camp to venture out into the wilderness, but you can also access the fast travel map whenever Arthur sets up a temporary camp. Just rest, set up Arthur's camp, and select fast travel to pick a destination.

If you're trying to set up camp and keep receiving the 'Cannot create camp while there is activity nearby' error, even though you're out in the sticks and not a soul is near, don't worry. Instead, open Arthur's inventory and go to 'Items'. There'll be an option to setup camp here, and it should work without a hitch unless there really is some activity nearby.

So, if you're out hunting legendary animals and find yourself needing to pay a visit to Valentine or Saint Denis, set up a quick camp!

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide

Second Red Dead Redemption 2 Gameplay Video Released

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a huge game world. It even contains a large chunk of Red Dead Redemption’s map which you can visit after you’ve unlocked it.

Traversing such a vast landscape on foot or on horseback can be a bit daunting, and if you ever need to get to the other end of the map for an objective, going there manually might take too much time. Luckily, the game has fast travel , and this guide will show you how to use it.

First of all, fast travel isn’t accessible by default. Once you’ve reached Chapter 2 and the game has properly opened up before you, camp upgrades become available. One of these is called Dutch’s Lodgings, which then unlocks further upgrades.

First, you need to purchase the “Dutch’s Lodgings” upgrade from the Ledger. After this, you need to buy the “Next In Line” upgrade. The two together cost around $600. Then Fast Travel will be unlocked.

Once unlocked, fast-travel still isn’t quite as unrestricted like in some other open world games. Instead of opening your map and allowing you to fast travel anywhere from anywhere, or even just to points of interest like in Assassin’s Creed, there are several orules.

  • You can only fast travel  from your camp, but not back to it.
  • You can only fast travel to specific fast travel locations that you have  already discovered .
  • Fast travel only works if your horse is near the camp when you use the map.
  • Additionally, the interface is also less than helpful, as instead of showing you an actual map, it just gives you a list of location names that you’ll need to remember.

While this isn’t the most convenient fast-travel system we’ve seen in games, we’re just happy Rockstar added this at all. With so many mechanics expressly focusing on realism above all else, they could have just as easily omitted fast travel from Red Dead Redemption 2 entirely.

If you’re interested in how to upgrade and maintain your cores and bars, check out our guide on the subject.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide: How to Unlock Fast Travel & Use It

Image of Chris Jecks

How to Unlock & Use Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is huge, and the various different missions you’ll embark on with your gang, or side activities you can do to fill your spare time will see you traveling all over. While your horse is a great means of getting around quickly, sometimes it can still take up precious time getting from one side of the map to the other. As such, the ability to fast travel is something you’re going to want to make the most of whenever you can. Here’s how to unlock fast travel, how to use fast travel, and all the different ways you can get about a little bit quicker in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

How to Unlock Fast Travel

The first thing you’ll need to do is unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Unlike some games, you cannot simply select somewhere on your map, press a button, and be transported there with some divine powers.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about giving a realistic feel to its fast travel system. You can use Stagecoaches to move between towns and locales quickly. However, it’s worth noting that before you can get a Stagecoach to somewhere else, you’ll need to have visited it already.

As such, you may find that the Stagecoach system is locked for the opening few hours in the game, while you find your feet and start exploring the different towns.

This isn’t the only method you can use to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. There are other options that you can unlock or use as your progress through the game, and we’ve detailed all of those below. During your opening few hours with the game, though, the Stagecoach system is likely going to be your best bet.

How to Use Stagecoach Fast Travel

Stagecoaches can often be found just outside of the train stations in Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve included an image below of the sign you’ll want to look out for, as well as what the one in Valentine looks like. The Valentine stagecoach station is right outside the train station and post office, which can be found towards the south of the town.

When you see this sign, you’ll then went to press and hold Triangle to use the ‘Take a Ride’ option. You can then see the different towns you’ve previously visited, as well as how much it’ll set you back to travel there by stagecoach.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Once you’ve selected where you want to fast travel to in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll then be given a lovely little view of the blue skies of the wild west, as the game loads you into your desired location. Arthur will then hop off the Stagecoach, and you’ll have successfully used one element of the fast travel system in Red Dead Redemption 2.

There are other ways to get around quickly, however, so we’ll continue to list these below.

How to Fast Travel on the Train in Red Dead Redemption 2

While the Stagecoach system requires you to have visited a location already for you to be able to fast travel there, you can use trains to get to the main places in Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly and in style. You can’t just hop on a train though… well, not if you want to remain a lawful citizen and keep your bounty low. You’ll need to buy a ticket in order to fast travel using the trains. To do this, you’re going to need to head to the Post Office. This is often located right by the train station in a town, and is marked with an envelope icon on your map.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Head inside, and use L2 to interact with the NPC behind the bars. You can then choose to buy a train ticket, and you’ll be provided a list of the different locations and how much they cost. Select one, and you’ll be given a lovely view of the train cruising across the countryside, taking you to your desired destination. This is the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 during the early stages of the game if you’ve yet to visit locations and need to for a mission.

Plus, when we used the train to fast travel, we found our horse was hitched at the nearby hitching post at our destination, so that’s a winner, too!

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Even outside of the train and stagecoach methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, you have other options.

Fast Travel Upgrade for Your Camp

You can purchase an upgrade for Arthur’s lodgings at camp to unlock fast travel. However, it’s worth noting that this also requires you to purchase the Dutch upgrade first, which comes in at a hefty $220. Make sure your camp can afford this hefty expenditure before splashing your cash on it.

Once you’ve purchased the upgrades for both Dutch and Arthur’s lodgings, you’ll then see a little map near Arthur’s bed which enables him to fast travel to any major location free of charge. This is essentially the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, though it will cost you a fair amount, meaning you likely won’t unlock it until later on in your adventure.

And there you have absolutely everything there is to know about fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Still got some questions? Don’t be shy, sound off in the comments below and we’ll do our best to get back to you.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Learn how to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 and save yourself that long journey on horseback.

Bill Lavoy

Those who played that other big Rockstar game that’s been popular for the last few years will recall that there isn’t an easy way to fast travel. Yes, you can call a taxi and pay the fare with in-game currency, but it never breaks immersion. This is not the case for Red Dead Redemption 2. You can absolutely travel to other locations faster than by horseback, and there are multiple ways to do so. Because it isn’t obvious from the beginning, here’s how you can fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

How to fast travel

To fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 , open your map and look for the location of a Stagecoach. It will have an icon that looks like a signpost. When you arrive, talk to the person standing beside the Stagecoach itself to fast travel to your desired location. Note that if you approach on your horse, it will appear your can't use the Stagecoach, but this is simply because you can't take a ride while on horseback. It should also be noted that you must unlock fast travel destinations by visiting them at least once.

Another way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 is to take the train. To do this, head to any train station in the game and talk to the Station Clerk. They will have options for you to Send Mail , Receive Mail , Train Tickets , and Pay Bounty . For the purpose of this guide you’re going to want to select Train Tickets . It works very similar to the Stagecoach. Select your destination and hop on the train. The game will then initiate a cinematic that shows a train traveling across the land. Truth told, this isn’t exactly fast, but it does a fine job of saving you a 10-minute trip on horseback and not breaking immersion with the experience. If you have a mission to complete and it’s a long ride, you might consider taking the train and hurrying things along. Be warned, though; your horse does not travel with you if it's hitched to anything.

If you want to go for the immersion-breaking method of fast travel, head to the Van der Linde camp and to the back of Dutch’s quarters. There you’ll find a ledger and the option to contribute to the camp. Open the ledger and look under the Lodging section. Under Next in Line it will say, “Arthur wants a map to help plan journeys.” This upgrade costs $325 but will put a fast-travel map at the back of Arthur’s quarters . You can only travel to previously discovered locations, though.

If you don’t have the money to fast travel, you could always take a long trip by horseback and setup a camp along the way if day turns to night. You should also stop by our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough and guide for all the help you’ll need getting Arthur Morgan through this adventure in one piece.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – How To Fast Travel

Image of Aidan O'Brien

There is a way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, in this guide we show you how! It is not unlimited, but will allow you to cut down travel time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a big, and beautiful, game. As you spend more time in it, it becomes clear exactly how big it is. The pace of the game, combined with the size of the map, might make the game feel a little daunting. Do you really have to spend all that time on your horse to get from one place to another? The answer is no; you don’t. There is a fast travel mechanic in the game, although it is reasonably well hidden.

How To Fast Travel

In your main camp, you should be acquainted with the donation box. This is where everybody in camp will put the money or loot that they are willing to share, to help the camp run smoothly. There is also a ledger that allows you to use camp funds to upgrade various elements of your camp.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - How To Fast Travel

One of the things that you can upgrade is Dutch’s lodgings because the man in charge would like something a bit more comfy to sleep in. It costs a lot of money to do, but is actually worth it in a way, as the rest of the camp will then begin to donate more money to the camp fund. The real reason to do it, however, is because the next upgrade in line will allow Arthur to have a fast travel map in his tent. This costs over $400 in total to get, so it is quite expensive. My advice is to get used to riding around at first but save your pennies to get this particular upgrade if you don’t really enjoy having to travel by horse everywhere.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - How To Fast Travel

Even when you unlock it, you can only actually fast travel from the camp; you won’t be able to just fast travel all over the map as you wish. It also doesn’t unlock the ability to fast travel BACK to the camp. You also need your horse to be close by to fast travel, and fast travel will be limited to previously discovered locations.

It may not be the solution that you are looking for, but it is some way to cut down on time spent traveling, for those who are not enjoying the scenery. Be sure to keep an eye on our Red Dead Redemption 2 Guide Hub for more advice on how to survive.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Story/Online)

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Story/Online)

Sure, Rockstar deserves some credit for creating a jaw-dropping game world for Red Dead Redemption 2 but let’s face it. You won’t feel like taking in the sights when it’s your third time traveling to your destination along the same old path. This is where you appreciate the Fast Travel mechanics in Red Dead Redemption 2.

You can Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 after unlocking it by progressing to the Money Lending chapter and spending 545$. You can also move around the map using Trains, Stagecoaches, and the Auto-Ride feature. Fast Travelling in Red Dead Online is much easier. Simply select a Fast Travel Outpost on the Map and Travel there with no hassle.

But, of course, unlocking it is no walk in the park. Not to mention that the game mechanic comes with restrictions of its own, which is why we’re here to show you how to Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. And while we’re at it, we’ll also go over other ways you can get around the map faster.

All Gold Bar Locations in Red Dead Redemption 2

How To Unlock Fast Travel in RDR 2 Story Mode

Arthur in Camp

There are several caveats to unlocking Fast Travel in the game, but the gist of it is to upgrade your gang’s camp after you’ve started Chapter 2: Horseshoe Overlook. You can start by completing the first five missions in Chapter 2 to Money Lending and Other Sins.

Once you’ve unlocked the Money Lending chapter, you’ll learn about the Ledger behind Dutch’s tent in the camp. Next, you’ll have to upgrade your Lodgings. Specifically, you’ll have to buy First Things First, aka Dutch’s Tent on page 6 of the Ledger, and then Next in Line, aka Arthur’s Wagon.

And voila, you have unlocked Fast Travel. Keep in mind that you need a total of 545 dollars to unlock the game mechanic—220 dollars for Dutch’s tent and 325 dollars for Arthur’s Wagon. You can go to The Heartlands or Treasure Maps to make some easy money if you don’t already have the sum.

How To Use Fast Travel

Sure, you unlocked Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption but slow down your horses. Unlocking the game mechanic doesn’t mean you can hop around on the map as you, please. If you want to make use of Fast Travel, you have to go to Arthur’s tent.

There you can view the map and choose your destination. That means every time you want to go somewhere using Fast Travel, you’ll have to do it at camp, but of course, that’s all right, considering that you get to reach your desired location with your trusted horse in little to no time.

Keep in mind that Fast Travel can only take you to a location as long as you’ve been there before. Moreover, once you get to your desired location, you can’t fast-travel back to camp. You’ll have to, unfortunately, take the long way in this case.

Oh, and if you’ve committed enough crimes to get on the local law enforcement’s radar, you can’t fast-travel to any towns on lockdown.

Ways To Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Of course, if you don’t feel like using Fast Travel or simply can’t because of a sticky situation, you can consider other options as well for getting around the map. Here are a few options:

1. The Train

Red Dead Redemption 2 Train

This one seems like an obvious method. You’ll see an envelope in most of the towns you visit. That’s the train station. Instead of going there to place your Wanted bounties, you can purchase a ticket as well.

The train has a list of destinations where you can go. Just pick one and settle down for a ride.

2. The Stagecoach

Stagecoach

Ever seen that icon with a signpost on it at most of the places you visit? Yeah, well, if you didn’t know before, that’s the Stagecoach, another way to get around the map. The Stagecoach will take you to smaller ranches and any other location you’ve visited.

Sometimes, the Stagecoach might be unavailable, but no worries. That probably means you have to pay a bounty, or you’re on a mission. It could also be locked because you’re riding your horse.

Fix these things, and you’ll be able to make use of the game mechanic. The Stagecoach is more expensive than the Train, but each has its perks, so feel free to choose either one to get around.

3. Auto-Ride

Another way to get around is by using the Auto-Ride feature. All you have to do is enable the cinematic camera while holding the Run button. Let go of the button once your camera is fully on, and voila! Your horse will be running at full speed to your destination.

Of course, like Fast Travel, this feature comes with its restrictions as well. It doesn’t work during missions. Moreover, you can’t use it if you have an NPC riding with you, either. Still, even with the restrictions, the mechanic can come in handy at times.

How To Fast Travel in Red Dead Online?

Fast Travel Outpost in Red Dead Online Map

While there are multiple ways to Fast Travel in single-player, they are a bit tedious. Breaking the immersion and adding a bit of simplicity to traversing the world of Red Dead Online, Rockstar just added loads of Fast Travel Waypoints that you can select on the map and teleport to without much hassle.

Pull up the Map in Red Dead Online and look for the Fast Travel Outpost. It’s a bit hard to find as they only pop up when you’re close by. But you can find them pretty easily near prominent locations, points of interest, and towns.

Go ahead and interact with the Fast Travel Outpost and select your desired location. Remember, the farther you are from your desired location, the more expensive it’s going to be. Another quick note here. If you’re carrying any pelts or carcasses, you’ll pretty much lose them.

Fast Travel Outposts

Red Dead Online Fast Travel Outpost

There’s a total of 16 Fast Travel Outposts in Red Dead Online that players can spawn in and out of:

  • Saint Denis
  • Emerald Station
  • Manzanita Post
  • MacFarlane’s Ranch

So, you can pretty much use Fast Travel to make getting around the map of Red Redemption 2 that much easier. Make sure you upgrade the Lodgings after you’ve unlocked the Ledger. You’ll have to be at camp to make use of the game mechanic.

In case you don’t feel like using Fast Travel, you can always take the train or the Stagecoach. Happy traveling!

Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Unlock Fast Travel

October 25, 2018 by PowerPyx 1 Comment

This guide will teach you how to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). There are 3 types of fast travel:

  • Permanently Free Fast Travel: Can be unlocked by upgrading your camp.
  • Train Tickets / Post Office: Train Tickets can be bought at the Post Office for a small fee, but not every other train stations can be reached from each town.
  • Stagecoaches: Found in most towns, you can call a Stagecoach to drive you to another town. The downside is that these only work when you have no bounty on your head worldwide.

In addition to fast travel, there is automatic horse travel (autopilot) which lets you set a waypoint anywhere and you can hold Touchpad (PS4) / View-Button (Xbox One) to make your horse ride there automatically. To initiate this you must be riding on a road in the direction of the waypoint.

Unlocking Free Fast Travel (Camp)

Step 1 (Unlock Camp Upgrades) : In Chapter 2, complete Strauss’s story mission “Money Lending and other Sins”. Strauss wants you to track down debtors who took a loan from your gang. There are 3 of them, you just need to get money from one and put it in the camp’s tithing box. This unlocks the ledger next to the tithing box. There you can select camp upgrades!

Step 2 (Unlock Fast Travel): Buy the first two camp upgrades in the lodging category “First Things First” ($220) & “Next in Line” ($325). That’s $545 in total. The second upgrade unlocks a fast travel map behind Arthur’s tent!

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

Now you can use the map behind Arthur’s tent for free fast travel. You can only travel to discovered towns, but cannot travel back. This is one way only. To get back you’ll have to either ride your horse or use one of the fast travel options below to get to the nearest town and then ride back to camp. Below is an image of what the fast travel map looks like:

red dead redemption 2 fast travel

Train Fast Travel

Train Tickets can be bought at any Post Office. The further you want to travel the more they cost (it usually varies between $5-$15). The downside is that not every train station is connected to each other. So you may have to take multiple trains to get where you want to go.

The upside is that it works even when you have a bounty on your head. The train fast travel is instant.

you can actually fast travel from the camp you can make in the wilderness and fast travel to the places you have discovered.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – How To Beat Blackgaol Knight Boss Guide

How project orion will make good on an old cyberpunk 2077 promise, 9 open-world games that offer the best value for money.

Updated November 2nd, 2023, by Christopher Norman Worcester: Red Dead Redemption 2 is still an incredibly popular game, with a huge number of players still helping Arthur Morgan find his way through an ever-changing world. With this in mind, it is incredibly important to make sure that our coverage is kept up-to-date. This update brings a new video guide on fast-travel in RDR2, helping to offer players as much context as possible with this important topic.

With Red Dead Redemption 2 , Rockstar Games has crafted a sprawling open world with a ton of acreage to explore. But oftentimes exploring the world of Red Dead is an investment, with players traveling far and wide to get to objectives or to find items.

Luckily, Red Dead Redemption 2 has a few options for players that want to travel between locations quickly. Two of those options, trains and stage coaches are marked directly on the Red Dead map and require a little cash to activate. Players will head to a train station (the mail icons on the map) or a stagecoach area (the signpost icon) and then indicate where they want to travel.

However, there is another fast travel option that Red Dead Redemption 2 players might not be aware of since the game never fully explains it. At any of the base camps, players can use Morgan’s lodging to fast travel to locations they have visited before. Here’s how to unlock it.

Unlock Arthur's Lodging Upgrade

First, players will need to access the Ledger at the base camp. The ledger is where Arthur Morgan can designate funds towards upgrading sections of the camp like Medical Supplies or Provisions.

Within the Ledger there is a section for Lodgings whose first entry is an upgrade for Dutch’s Lodging called "First Things First." This upgrade will make it so members of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang contribute towards the camp’s funds in addition to Arthur’s contributions. It isn’t cheap, though, costing $220.

After purchasing the Dutch Lodging upgrade, players will unlock the ability to upgrade Arthur’s Lodging, which includes a fast travel map. Again, the upgrade is expensive (depending on how much questing and looting players have done) at $325, but it will be worth it.

The cost of the camp upgrades appears to change under certain circumstances. The upgrade to Dutch's tent has been seen at $170, with Arthur's upgrade coming in at $260. What causes this has not been confirmed, though it may have something to do with how much the player contributes to the camp

Now, all players need to do is go up to the map and they can fast travel to any of the major towns, landmarks, or locations that they have visited before. This is very useful because players are usually traveling back to camp regularly, either to pick up or turn in quests or to deliver goods to boost the supplies of the camp .

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.

Description official descriptions

Red Dead Redemption is a free-roaming western game and the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver . The game is set in 1911, where players take control of John Marston, an outlaw who is forced to turn on his peers when federal agents threaten his family. He is sent to the American frontier to capture his former gang members, especially the notorious leader Bill Williamson.

In the open world, the player is free to follow the storyline or partake in the various events that occur while exploring the West; similar in overall design to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series . Horses are the main means of transportation, and the player can whistle for their mount at any time. Players can also visit towns, talk to other characters, and join or intervene in events such as public hangings, ambushes, and robberies. Many of these are random, including dangerous animal attacks and bandit ambushes. Other activities include hunting, gambling, duels, and standoffs, with guns as the main weapon.

Based on the player's decisions, two morality systems (honor and fame) influence how the environment and other characters react to Marston. Marston can shoot while riding a horse and capture people by lasso, combined with a cover system with specific targeting or wildfire. In the recharging "Dead Eye" targeting mode, time is slowed down to target different enemies in specific locations, and then execute the shots in rapid succession. The player can also set up camps anywhere in the world to fast travel to known locations or save their game.

Multiplayer is supported through free-for-all, team, and capture-the-flag modes, introducing crates with weapons and power-ups. Games start with a Mexican standoff where the survivor receives some extra time to gather items while the others are respawning. Similar to Grand Theft Auto IV , there is a continuous free-roaming mode where players can team up in posses to form a party and engage computer-controlled gangs. Posses are made up of a maximum of eight players and all multiplayer games support a maximum of sixteen players. During multiplayer, the characters can level up and gain access to new mount breeds, character models, and weapon skins.

John Marston tops Tommy Vercetti as a great character.

The Good LET’S TALK GAME-PLAY:

  • Camera is Co-operative, it does little things to help you out when it comes to cover/etc.
  • Missions are coherent and to the point, you don’t need to check notes to understand what you need to do.
  • Failure and death are forgiving, they’ll put you back in the action quickly.
  • Map is well-done. The in-game map and the printed map from the keep case actually each have different tips on them, using both is helpful.
  • The Weapon-switching wheel is innovative, although if you’re spastic you might fumble it.
  • Scaling (how big the map is and distance between points) is appropriate; a long journey feels long but is maybe 3-4 minutes.
  • The auto-aim is one of the best I’ve seen, it almost makes it too easy.
  • In the words of the Eidos Manual for Thief: The Dark Project “You are not a tank.” If you eat two loads of buck-shot at close range you’re dead. I like that danger.
  • The physics engine is usually really good.
  • They gave me my mini-games. No complaining there!

LET’S TALK GRAPHICS:

  • John Marston is one bad-ass looking guy. He’s like if Clint Eastwood got in a brawl with a wolverine.
  • A lot of the characters are ugly, hard-living people who I know must smell bad. I love it!
  • Good palette, nice texture mapping, good perspective focus. Good job all around.
  • Blood is handled in an interesting way, it stains realistically and then fades in reverse.
  • Interior spaces only suffer from a slight ‘huge’ perspective. Pet peeve in most games, okay here.
  • Very good attention to period clothing.
  • Fire is done well, as well as realistic dynamite explosions.

LET’S TALK STORY:

  • You can quote me: “Not since Yakuza (1) have I seen quite this much ‘right’ in a story.” I’ll talk about this more below in the sum-up.
  • These guys did their homework about the time period. This game is just rammed full of historical, religious, and literate references that work wonderfully.

LET’S TALK SOUND:

  • Gunshots, ricochets, Wilhelm screams, all great.
  • The voice acting is superb. Seriously, the dialects are right, the FBI guys sound right, the NPC’s and whore’s sound right. It takes serious effort to get this right.
  • The music is very fitting and dynamic. When the music spurs you on it’s doing a good job. When one of the battle theme's kicked in while I was rescuing a friend the music got the hairs on the back of my neck up. I love that!
  • The random things John says when performing tasks really add to his character. Looting corpses, skinning foxes, doesn’t matter – the man is great fun to play as.

The Bad LET’S TALK GAME-PLAY:

  • There is a dichotomy between writing and general execution in this and most other Rockstar games. The sheer amount of people you kill in this game is terrible. It’s actually disconcerting just how many guys you kill and it makes human life and killing (a central plot focus) lose some of its kick. Bethesda is really good at scaling the amount of murder you do, Rockstar could learn a lesson from them.
  • The ambient quests (activities you can do at any time, herb collecting, gold finding, hunting, trick shooting) feel too much like World of Warcraft. These are the things you had to do in WoW for crafting professions/etc. RDR doesn’t have that kind of scope to it to allow for ambient questing. I don’t need this busy work when there are better developed quests out there that I won’t play because I got bored of the game picking flowers.
  • The dead-eye trick shooting wasn’t really that useful to me. The auto-aim actually out-performs it. So the specialist feature of the game is kind of underwhelming.
  • Some of the AI and a bit of the engine is a little wonky. Funny Story: I was on a thin little path on the side of a cliff looking for treasure map gold. My expensive horse walked by me during the cut-scene. Already I’m thinking “Oh, you do not fall off that cliff!” I get control back, walk forward, no horse. He’s just gone. So I try to peek over the edge to see if I can see his body, and John just pitches forward off this cliff head-first. Except the physics engine can’t have that. I GLIDE at a 30 degree angle, head first , towards the river. My legs are flailing comically, and I swear he reaches up and grabs his hat before plunking into the river below. It was instant death because water is fatal. Hi-larious.
  • Every other weapon on the wheel gets an upgrade except the knife. It just stood out as weird.
  • Typically the engine is solid, although if enough camera-jerking is involved the textures degrade for a while.
  • The default camera distance Is a little far back from what I’m used to.
  • Nothing really to complain about here.
  • The main storyline is the best I’ve seen since Yakuza. You want my advice; for the best experience do the main storyline all in one go. Come do the mini-stuff after or just whichever quests you think are best later. I’m not going to spoil it for you, and trust me, I haven’t.

The Bottom Line “I’m a semi-literate farmer and hired killer. I ain’t in the power game.” – John Marston

When Duke Nukem : Forever came out there was something suddenly obvious about Duke: He’s a shallow asshole character from the 90’s. He’s not cool anymore. Characters in games have evolved so much since then; it’s no longer enough to have a stereotype. I blame games like Silent Hill and Metal Gear for this, giving writing an honest hand in a character. When Rockstar gave us GTA: Vice City I was enthralled with Ray Liotta’s ‘Tommy Vercetti’ character. Since then they've been pretty decent.

They’ve upped themselves considerably with John Marston, and in many ways he makes the game worth playing. Here’s a man who grew up believing in personal freedom, following a rougish Robin Hood style bandit who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Unfortunately his idol went a little crazy. The gang left John for dead at a shootout with the law. When his wounds healed John decided to start a new life, a straight life, with his wife, daughter, and young son. The law hadn’t forgotten him though, and as the game starts the newly formed FBI is blackmailing John into rounding up members of his old gang. What this arm twisting does and how it affects John Marston is what gives his character so many nuances. Here’s a man who has little qualms about killing, trying hard to live a good life by the law despite his violent past. Now the law comes and takes his family as black-mail and forces him to hunt down his former friends. At every turn he is used by others for their own goals, and it doesn’t take much pushing before John tells you kindly that he will shoot you in the head. When the FBI commander asks him how he feels about killing an old comrade John calmly replies “I’d rather kill you 100 times instead”.

This is movie-worthy characterization. Good direction, good writing, good acting. The GTA format is rejuvenated by something this well-crafted. The timing is poignant: it is 1911 – World War I is wrapping up and the Wild West is becoming tamed. Men like John Marston have got to play by the rules now, no more free living – the government is federalising, the FBI doesn’t tolerate groups of free men doing whatever they like.

They gave this guy a backstory that is directly relevant to the plot. The writing does a great job of leaving enough mystery and ambiguity in John’s past, which is never shown but talked about frequently. It’s hard to do that well when you have flash-backs at your disposal, but here it feels right and ads tension. You see characters that you’ve been hearing about for hours for the first time and it’s exciting because you already have an idea of what they should be like, and you get to weigh them against your expectations.

And maybe best of all is the character motivation: Family. He has to turn his former family over to the law in exchange for his new one back. And he doesn’t want to; he’s being exhorted into it. You spend the whole game watching John trying to rein his patience in as he’s jerked around by people he’d gladly have killed in the past for crossing him. The point is he just wants his damn life back, and you want him to have it. When John is civil to his friends you admire and respect him for it. He calls himself a semi-literate farmer, but in reality he is well self-educated and has a wide vocabulary. He’s honest, open, and doesn’t like b.s. He’s a good man but a hard man, and he will go biblical on you with little provocation. And if John gets his family back, you get to see what you were fighting for this whole game. How often do you actually get the prize in a game?

I got myself one of d'em good games, partner

The Good When I think about Rockstar, the first thing that comes to mind is a big city with lots of cars and skyscrapers, a world that looks impressive, but at the same time very crowded and overpopulated with potential murder victims. It's quite impressive to see how that same company made a version of the Wild-West that looks just as impressive as the cities in GTA, but without all the people and buildings. Both Mexico and America look beautiful and all the plants and animals that wander around give the impression that the world is truly alive.

As impressive as the world is, it is going to get pretty boring when you have to travel back and forth between towns to pick up missions, but Rockstar fixed this by throwing in an amazing amount of random events. If you spend some time in the open, you will run into quite a few ambushes and people that need your help with a quick job (like getting their horse back or killing a bandit) and these are good for some quick action and money. If you really don't feel like travelling then you can usually pay for a ride to wherever you need to go.

The story is pretty good and probably the best I have ever seen in a Rockstar game, you play as John, a former bandit turned farmer who is forced by the government to track down his former gang-members. In order to do so you must take on missions and travel all over an American state and even cross the border. The best part of the story are the many interesting characters you run into (and a quick sex-scene) and the many good jokes they make while you ride with them to the local gang hide-out which they want you to get rid off.

Once you get to the shooting in this game, you will notice that this is just a little different than in most games because machine guns were scarce in the Wild West. You will spend most your time in cover while using pistols and rifles to take down the enemies which more often then not outnumber you greatly. It can get pretty chaotic at time and those are the funniest moments because they give me an excuse to use my strongest weapons. I am also pretty fond of fighting while riding a horse because you can't get any more Western then that, it works very well and I never really had any problems when doing it.

The slow-motion ability is a bit out of place, but it works very well and it often saved my life when a bandit and his friends suddenly leveled up their AI and started flanking me. With a simple press off a button you slow everything down, allowing you to line up some good head-shots to make quick work of bandits, soldiers and drunkards. There are also some interesting moments where you use a turret, which is quite an experience after getting used to the slow-motion. The Bad While the characters all have very interesting personalities and it's interesting to learn more about them, I just hate the amount of negativity that oozes out of them. Every single character is either paranoid, drunk, a fraud or just wants to use you without doing anything back for you. I read in a recent review on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City that the same problem is present in that game and it just annoys me because I played through the entire game and I couldn't name a single character that I liked afterwards.

There are several glitches which often caused major problems, one time I was on a raft getting shot at by Mexican bandits as part of a mission, but suddenly John launched himself into outer space and I had to re-do half the mission again. A more recurring problem is when you want to kill bandits because sometimes you commit a crime by killing them even though they just finished stabbing a hooker in the breasts. I wouldn't mind this at all because the same happens in the few GTA games I played, but here you are supposed to be the good guy and committing a crime results in an hour long chase before you can continue doing your missions.

I played the multi-player a few times and every time I did the servers were almost completely empty and the few players I did run into weren't anywhere near as good as me and died every ten seconds after they spawned. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I was supposed to do in the multi-player world which didn't get me anywhere and after that I just logged off because I don't really like playing with or against people I don't know and even if I did, I could name at least three games with a better online mode. The Bottom Line Red Dead Redemption or Grand Theft Horse as most people seem to call it, is a pretty swell game with a great story, atmosphere and gameplay. I really enjoyed playing it and the ending is one of my favorite video game endings in a triple-A title to date. Online it's a mess and there is something seriously wrong with a story where the most enjoyable character is your mount (not counting Mr. Ed), but overall this is a recommendation for fans of GTA and Western games.

Simply, a fun game

The Good The game is set in the wild west, as the sequel of Red Dead Revolver. Like in GTA, it is possible to steal vehicles like horses and many more. When looking at the gameplay, you can say it's fairly easy. Anyone who has played GTA wont have a problem playing this game. A lot of missions, which consist of races are easy to complete. However, there are some missions which require a second try. But after all, this wont be a problem for the average game. Moving on to the graphics and sound, I think they are wonderful. Everything looks and sounds like in the really wild west, and there was never anything wrong at any time. On the other hand, the multiplayer option gives you the ability to free roam or to play death match or capture the flag style games. This was very much fun and very addicting. The Bad The only thing that bothered me, are the repetitive story missions that you get in the first half of the game. After that, I think everything in the game gets better. The Bottom Line This is a fun and action packed western game, better than its competitors and one of the best free roam and western games ever made.

Esteemed Actor Donald Sutherland Dies at 88

With a career spanning 6 decades, he is best known for film roles in ‘m*a*s*h,’ ‘the hunger games’ and ‘ordinary people’.

Actor Donald Sutherland smiling for a portrait

Donald Sutherland , the prolific film and television actor whose long career stretched from M*A*S*H to The Hunger Games , has died. He was 88.

Kiefer Sutherland, the actor’s son, confirmed his father’s death Thursday. No further details were immediately available.

Kiefer called his father “one of the most important actors in the history of film” in a tribute on X . “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that.”

Donald Sutherland talking to Jane Fonda in the film Klute

The tall and gaunt Canadian actor with a grin that could be sweet or diabolical was known for offbeat characters including Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H , a proto-hippie tank commander in Kelly’s Heroes and a stoned professor in Animal House .

Before transitioning into a respected character actor, Sutherland epitomized the unpredictable, antiestablishment cinema of the 1970s. Over the decades, Sutherland showed his range in more buttoned-down — but still eccentric — parts in Robert Redford’s Ordinary People and Oliver Stone’s JFK . More recently, he starred in The Hunger Games films and the HBO limited series The Undoing . He never retired and worked regularly up until his death. “I love to work. I passionately love to work,” Sutherland told Charlie Rose in 1998. “I love to feel my hand fit into the glove of some other character. I feel a huge freedom — time stops for me. I’m not as crazy as I used to be, but I’m still a little crazy.”

He received an honorary Oscar in 2017.

The ROG Ally X is built to play all your favorite games while far away from a power outlet. With that in mind, we upgraded the battery to a massive 80Wh capacity, extending it to a longer battery life. Game on.

Intelligent Cooling logo

Zero Gravity, Zero Distraction, Peak Performance

The ROG Ally X is designed to let you play anywhere, so it needed a thermal solution to match. It comes equipped with specially designed heatpipes that operate at peak efficiency in any orientation, and a new third exhaust vent to help keep the mainboard and panel cool.

An abstract, pixelated black and gray banner background with a digital camouflage effect.

Anti-Gravity Heat Pipes

Anti-Gravity heat pipes improve thermal transfer by using capillary structure for the wick, increasing capillary pressure by more than 15%. This allows the Ally’s cooling solution to maintain effectiveness even when upside-down.

Fluid Dynamic Bearing

Both fans have a fluid bearing design, which is a tried and tested style that will keep the Ally X spinning like a top for years to come. Fluid bearing fans also are low friction even when run in non-traditional orientations, letting you hold the Ally X in any direction without worry.

A 3D render of the fan and its shroud for the ROG Ally X.

The ROG Ally X is equipped with brand new fans that are thinner than the previous design, leaving more space for air to pass between each blade. The 0.15mm thick fans allowed for the inclusion of the larger 80Wh battery, while still increasing overall airflow by 10%.

A 3D render of the fan and its shroud for the ROG Ally X, with emphasis on airflow and the cutout allowing for internal airlfow in the chassis.

Cool inside and out

We’ve also redesigned the fan shrouds to divert a small amount of air into the chassis, in between the motherboard and display panel. This air keeps the display cooler to the touch, and exhausts out of a new third vent on the top of the chassis, keeping acoustics low when you’re engrossed in a game.

ROG Dust Filter

Dust filters cover both air intake vents, keeping foreign debris out of the fans. Less dust means more efficient and quiet cooling for years to come.

0.1mm Ultra-Thin Fins

Thermal energy is dissipated by two heatsinks, each lined with ultra-thin aluminum fins as slim as 0.1mm. Higher density fins allow for increased heat dissipation and lower air resistance for smoother flow. There are up to 102 heatsink fins totaling 12,173mm²of surface area.

Lightning Fast. Crystal Clear.

Sporting a 1080p touchscreen panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync™ Premium support, this 7-inch display is truly a joy to game on. While common LCD displays generally have a maximum brightness of 200-300 nits, the Ally X cranks it all the way to 500 nits. A higher brightness allows the Ally X to clearly display the action on screen when in challenging brighter environments like the great outdoors without losing access to contrast or 100% of the sRGB color space.

Ergonomics are everything with a handheld gaming device, so we’ve pulled out all the stops to make the ROG Ally X as comfortable as possible. Taller handgrips, refined macro keys, and flatter surface angles make all of the buttons easier to reach for a great gaming experience.

A side profile view of the ROG Ally X, with emphasis on the 4.5mm thicker handgrips than the previous gen.

More substantial handgrips with a carefully contoured curvature grace the ROG Ally X. With just a minor height increase of 4.5mm, the grips feel supremely comfortable in your hands without sacrificing nearly any space in your bag.

Effortless Control

The ROG Ally X has also slightly tweaked the locations of the joysticks relative to the D-Pad and face buttons, making it easier for each hand to move between each, while custom-tailored 2° and 14° slants keep the Ally X comfortable in every hand. Comfort is king, and the Ally X is designed from the ground up to fit perfectly in your hands.

Slip-resistant Design

A unique ROG-themed texture features prominently on the rear of the Ally X’s handgrips, adding a touch of flair in addition to rock solid stability in your hands. Confidence and security have never looked this good.

RGB Lighting

Tasteful RGB around both joysticks adds flair and works with Aura Sync-supported games, pulling you further into the action.

Instant Login

A slightly caved-in power button helps you easily locate it without looking, while keeping the fingerprint scanner accurate so you can log in instantly and start gaming.

Joysticks are your primary input with a controller, so we made sure the ROG Ally X features the perfect mix of comfort and accuracy. These improved sticks are also much more durable, now rated 5 million rotation cycles — twice the 2.5 million of the previous Ally. Slightly offset from each other for ergonomics, both joysticks are surrounded by an RGB halo for a little extra flair.

And extreme close up of the right joystick and face buttons of the Ally X.

Effortless Button Pressing

The face buttons feature a flat dome shape, making them supremely comfortable to press with a tactile click and less wobble.

Subtle redesigns on the angle and contours of the bumper and trigger emphasize comfort without reducing accuracy or responsiveness. The Ally X is the perfect partner for esports shooters and cozy games alike.

Macro Button

Some games have extra functions, which is why we added a macro key on the rear of the chassis. The Ally X features a smaller key than last year, allowing for the same flexibility with less chance of accidental presses.

Directional Buttons

The D-Pad is the unsung hero of a controller, frequently being used to control inventories and perform complex moves. We’ve redesigned the Ally X D-Pad to reduce stickiness when performing circular movements, while still cleanly actuating inputs on the 8-axis wheel.

Modern Security

Windows hello.

Log in to the Ally quickly and securely with a Windows Hello fingerprint reader integrated with the power button, no PIN required. If you accidentally leave your Ally unattended, your data is secure.

Parental Control

For younger users, parents can limit app or screen time, see spending summaries, and track their kids’ locations with powerful parental controls.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender provides robust security for your device, with constantly updated antivirus and malware protection.

Immersive Stereo Sound

Enshrouded Logo

Dual front-firing Smart Amp speakers with Dolby Atmos pump up the volume without distortion and immersing you directly in your games, while Two-Way AI Noise Cancelation processes both incoming and outgoing audio to filter any errant background noises from your voice chats.

Reach the Clouds with Wi-Fi 6E

The Ally was built to travel, so it comes equipped with ultra-fast Wi-Fi 6E networking. Wi-Fi 6E supports 4X more network capacity and 75% lower latency than Wi-Fi 6, letting the Ally stream videos, access cloud gaming services, and download games effortlessly even on crowded networks.
