The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

Planning Your Journey with a Road Trip Gas Calculator: A Comprehensive Guide

A Road Trip Gas Calculator is an invaluable tool for anyone planning a road trip, offering a simple way to estimate fuel costs based on distance, fuel efficiency, and gas prices.

This tool helps travelers budget accurately for their journeys, making road trips more enjoyable and stress-free.

This guide delves into the importance of calculating gas expenses, how a Road Trip Gas Calculator works, and its strategic benefits for optimizing travel plans and expenses.

Understanding Road Trip Gas Calculators

A Road Trip Gas Calculator estimates the amount of gas needed for a road trip and the total cost based on the vehicle's fuel efficiency, the trip's total distance, and the current price of gas.

This calculation allows travelers to plan their budget and make informed decisions about their route and travel logistics.

The Importance of Calculating Gas Expenses for Road Trips

Calculating gas expenses is crucial for several reasons:

Budget Planning : Helps travelers allocate funds accurately, ensuring that gas expenses are covered within their travel budget.

Route Optimization : Encourages travelers to consider different routes based on fuel efficiency and cost, possibly discovering more scenic or less expensive paths.

Expense Management : Aids in managing overall travel expenses by providing a clear picture of one of the trip's main costs.

How a Road Trip Gas Calculator Works

A Road Trip Gas Calculator requires three key pieces of information to provide an estimate of gas costs:

Vehicle Fuel Efficiency : The average miles per gallon (MPG) or kilometers per liter (km/L) your vehicle can travel. This figure can typically be found in the vehicle's manual or online.

Trip Distance : The total miles or kilometers you plan to travel. This can be determined using a map or a GPS device.

Gas Price : The current price per gallon or liter of gas. This varies by location and can be found at local gas stations or through various online resources.

By inputting these details, the calculator will estimate the total quantity of fuel needed for the trip and the associated cost, based on the formula:

Total Gas Cost = (Trip Distance / Fuel Efficiency) × Gas Price

Advantages of using a road trip gas calculator.

Efficiency and Accuracy : Provides a quick and precise estimate of gas costs, facilitating effective travel planning.

Cost-Saving Insights : Offers the opportunity to explore cost-saving measures, such as optimizing the route or traveling at more fuel-efficient speeds.

Financial Preparedness : Helps travelers ensure they have allocated enough funds for fuel, avoiding potential budget shortfalls during the trip.

Implementing Gas Cost Calculations in Travel Planning

To effectively incorporate gas cost calculations into travel planning, consider the following practices:

Early Planning : Use the calculator during the early stages of travel planning to estimate gas expenses accurately and adjust your budget or route as needed.

Comparative Route Analysis : Compare different routes to determine which offers the best balance of fuel efficiency, travel time, and scenic value.

Regular Updates : As gas prices fluctuate, update your calculations close to your departure date for the most accurate budgeting.

Real-world Applications and Success Stories

Travelers frequently use Road Trip Gas Calculators to plan and budget for vacations, family visits, and other journeys.

For example, a family planning a cross-country road trip might use the calculator to determine the most cost-effective route, taking into account gas prices and their vehicle's fuel efficiency.

Similarly, solo adventurers and digital nomads use these calculators to manage their travel expenses, ensuring their journeys are both affordable and enjoyable.

A Road Trip Gas Calculator is an essential planning tool for anyone embarking on a road trip, providing valuable insights into fuel costs and helping to manage travel budgets effectively.

By enabling travelers to estimate and optimize their gas expenses, it contributes to a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience, ensuring that road trips remain a popular and accessible way to explore new destinations.

Calculating the Cost of Gas

How to Estimate Cost of Gas for a Road Trip

road trip cost of gas

Many people assume a road trip is a cheaper way to travel across the United States than flying, but that isn't always the case. It depends on the current gas prices and your car's mileage, so you should always add up the cost of your potential road trip before you forego that plane ticket. To do this, you'll need to know the current price of gas, the miles per gallon your vehicle gets on the highway, and the miles you intend to drive on your trip. It's pretty simple to calculate the cost of gas for a trip, and you can get the bottom line in four easy steps.

Calculate Your Gas Mileage

You first need to look up or calculate the mileage, or miles per gallon (mpg), your vehicle gets. You can do this yourself with simple math, or you can use an online mileage calculator . However, your actual mpg may vary depending on your particular driving style, for example, if you prefer to use cruise control or not. You can also try to figure it out by writing down the reading on your odometer the next time you fill up your car. If you have a computerized console, you could also set your trip odometer to zero by pushing the little knob underneath the odometer.

After setting the trip odometer or writing down the number, drive normally until it's time to get gas, then note the odometer reading or the miles on the trip odometer when you fill your tank again. Subtract the first odometer reading from the second to give you the number of miles you've driven. Or, if you set the trip odometer to zero when you filled up the last time, that figure is the number of miles you have driven on that tank of gas. Divide that number of miles by the number of gallons you just purchased on your second gas station visit, which will give you your miles per gallon.

Remember that your mileage will vary based on whether you spend more time driving on the highway or in town. City driving means you'll spend a lot of time stopping and starting, which uses more gas, so your mileage will be lower. If you use a whole gallon of gas to drive just on the highway, however, your calculation will be more accurate.

Research Your Trip Distance

Next, calculate the total distance you'll be driving on your road trip. For this, you can use AAA or Google Maps . Enter in your start and end points, along with any stops along the way, and then note the number of miles it says your trip will cover. Make sure you check that the route being plotting out is likely to be the one you'll take.

If you're planning a several day-, week-, or month-long road trip, you might make some side trips or detours, so it would be impossible to calculate the exact distance. However, you can still make an educated guess by adding in some side trips to your total; if you decide to skip out on them, you'll be spending less money than you budgeted for. Jot down the total distance you'll be driving, plus extra for potential side trips, next to your figure for miles per gallon.

Find Out the Current Price of Gas

For the third step, you need to know the current gas price. Without an approximate price, you can't calculate gas for a trip. Of course it's impossible to know the exact cost of a gallon of gas at any given time in any given location, but knowing the current price will provide you with a dependable approximation of the total fuel cost for your trip. Use AAA to find the average national gas price . Jot down the amount given at the top of the page as your third figure.

Add up Your Trip Cost

Take the mileage of the total distance of your trip and divide it by your miles per gallon. This will give you the number of gallons of gas you'll need on your journey. Then, multiply that figure by the current gas price, and the result is the estimated cost of gas for your road trip.

For example, say you drove 200 miles after filling your car up, set your trip odometer to zero, and had to return to fill up again. On your return to the gas station, you topped up your tank with 10 gallons of gas. Your mpg would then be 200 divided by 10, which is 20 mpg. You are planning on driving 850 miles on your road trip, and the average price of gas was $3.40 at the time you checked.

To calculate the amount of money you need to budget for your road trip, divide 850 by 20 to get the number of gallons of gas you will need, which is 42.5. Multiply 42.5 by $3.40, which gives you $144.50 as the total cost of gas for your road trip.

Don't Forget Other Travel Costs

The cost of gas is only one aspect of the expense of a road trip. You'll also need to factor in lodging, meals, tolls, and other car-related costs. If you're traveling with friends, you can divvy up the cost of gas, so your transportation fee will be even less per person.

The national average per gallon topped $4.60 on May 26 for the first time since AAA began recording prices in 2000. It is not the highest when adjusted for inflation, but it has risen dramatically from its low in the early days of the pandemic.

[ A guide to your best summer vacation ]

But gas prices vary significantly across the country because of fuel supplies, taxes and other factors with prices ranging from an average of $4.10 per gallon in Oklahoma to $6.07 in California.

In California the cost is driven up by the state’s heavy gasoline tax and environmental regulations . Another reason, Kevin Slagle of the Western States Petroleum Association told Market Place , is that California is a “fuel island.” The state produces 30 percent of its oil needs and imports the other 70 percent. Without interstate pipelines, much of that comes from outside the United States — and at a high price.

At just over $4, Oklahoma gas prices are kept down by low taxes and proximity to refineries .

Industry experts see little relief in sight as we head into summer, when gas prices are often higher. Lower fuel supply and greater demand are keeping prices up. The war in Ukraine is a key factor; Russia is the world’s largest exporter of oil , and its invasion of Ukraine has left markets uncertain about future supply .

Another reason prices remain high is drivers’ willingness to pay them. Americans are not driving less , which puts a strain on every mile. Many have no choice in their commute, and for some, a road trip may be out of reach. According to a Washington Post-Schar School poll , 6 in 10 Americans say that gas prices are a “major factor” in their summer vacation plans. The millions who will travel this holiday weekend are ready to pay the price to emerge from their pandemic cocoon and hit the road.

So where do you to fill up this weekend? According to data from the federal Energy Information Administration gas costs even more along the highway . Experts say to shop around , which forces stations to compete for business and will ultimately help lower prices. There are a handful of apps that can help you find the cheapest prices.

Fuel expenses can quickly add up, especially when you are traveling long distances. However, by incorporating efficient driving techniques, you can significantly reduce your fuel consumption and save money on gas. Here are some tips to help you achieve better fuel efficiency on your next road trip:

Maintain your vehicle:

Before hitting the road, ensure your vehicle is in good condition. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, air filter replacements, and tire rotations can make a notable difference in fuel efficiency. Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated as underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption.

Drive smoothly:

Aggressive driving behaviors like frequent acceleration, abrupt braking, and speeding can significantly decrease your fuel efficiency. Instead, practice smooth driving techniques. Start by gradually accelerating and maintain a steady speed. When approaching stop signs or traffic lights, start slowing down in advance by lightly lifting your foot off the accelerator. By driving smoothly, you can reduce the amount of fuel burned during your trip.

Observe the speed limit:

Speeding not only puts you at a higher risk of accidents, but it also burns more fuel. Driving at higher speeds increases wind resistance and requires more power from the engine. As a result, fuel consumption increases. Stick to the posted speed limits to maximize fuel efficiency and ensure your safety on the road.

Reduce idle time:

Leaving your vehicle running while parked or waiting unnecessarily consumes fuel. If you anticipate waiting for more than a minute, it is better to turn off your engine. For example, if you're stopping for a quick errand or stuck in heavy traffic, turning off your vehicle can help save fuel. However, be cautious of frequent engine restarts, as they can also consume more fuel. Use your judgment to determine when it is appropriate to turn off your engine.

Plan your route:

Planning your route in advance allows you to choose the most efficient path and avoid unnecessary detours or congested areas. Consider using a GPS device or navigation app that provides real-time traffic updates to help you avoid heavy traffic and road construction. By minimizing the time spent in traffic, you can also reduce fuel consumption.

Use cruise control:

Cruise control can help you maintain a consistent speed on long stretches of highway driving, thus maximizing fuel efficiency. It prevents unnecessary speed variations caused by fluctuations in your foot on the accelerator pedal. However, do not use cruise control on hilly or winding roads, as it may lead to over-revving the engine and wasting fuel.

Minimize air conditioning usage:

Air conditioning can significantly increase fuel consumption, especially at higher speeds and in hot weather. Instead of relying solely on air conditioning, try using the vehicle's ventilation system or opening windows to cool down the cabin. At low speeds or when stuck in traffic, it is more fuel-efficient to turn off the air conditioning and roll down the windows.

Minimize excessive cargo and roof racks:

Extra weight in your vehicle leads to more fuel consumption. Therefore, only pack the essential items for your trip and remove any unnecessary cargo or roof racks when not in use. Roof racks create wind resistance, which reduces aerodynamics and increases fuel consumption. Removing them when not needed can help improve fuel efficiency.

By implementing these efficient driving techniques, you can significantly reduce your fuel consumption and save money on gas during your travels. Remember, small changes in driving habits can add up to substantial savings over time. Happy and fuel-efficient travels!

When planning your next road trip, finding ways to save money on gas can make a big difference in your travel budget. Luckily, there are several ways you can take advantage of gas rewards and discounts to help you save money. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your gas purchases while traveling.

  • Sign up for gas station rewards programs: Many gas stations offer rewards programs that allow you to earn points or discounts on gas purchases. Sign up for these programs before you start your trip and make sure to use your rewards card every time you fill up. The points you earn can help you save money on future gas purchases or even other purchases in the gas station store.
  • Look for credit cards with gas rewards: Another way to save on gas is by using a credit card that offers rewards specifically for gas purchases. These cards typically give you cash back or points for every dollar you spend on gas. Look for credit cards with gas rewards that align with your travel habits and apply for one before you hit the road.
  • Take advantage of grocery store gas rewards: Some grocery store chains partner with gas stations to offer discounts on gas when you shop at their stores. These programs typically work by earning points based on your grocery purchases, which can then be used to get discounts on gas. Before your trip, check if any grocery stores along your route offer gas rewards and make sure to use your rewards card when you shop.
  • Use apps and websites for gas price comparisons: Gas prices can vary greatly from one station to another, so it's always a good idea to compare prices before filling up. There are several apps and websites available that allow you to easily compare gas prices in your area. Take advantage of these tools to find the cheapest gas station along your route and save money on your fuel costs.
  • Consider gas station memberships: Some gas stations offer membership programs that can provide additional discounts or benefits. These memberships often have an upfront fee, but they can be worth it if you frequently travel in an area where that particular gas station is the most affordable option. Do some research before your trip to see if any gas station memberships align with your travel plans.
  • Be mindful of gas station location: Gas stations located near highways or major tourist attractions tend to have higher prices compared to those located in less popular areas. If you're willing to drive a bit further off the beaten path, you can often find cheaper gas prices. Plan your route accordingly and consider using navigation apps that can help you locate nearby gas stations with competitive pricing.

By taking advantage of these gas rewards and discounts, you can save a significant amount of money on your road trip. Remember to plan ahead, sign up for rewards programs, and use tools like gas price comparison apps to maximize your savings. With a little bit of effort, you can enjoy your trip without breaking the bank at the gas pump.

Ensuring Your Trustworthiness: How to Check if You Qualify as a Trusted Traveler

When planning a road trip, one of the key factors to consider is the distance you will be driving. Driving long distances can consume a significant amount of gas, which can quickly add up and become expensive. To save money on gas when traveling, it is important to plan your routes strategically to minimize driving distances. Here are some tips to help you plan routes that are both time-saving and fuel-efficient.

  • Use a GPS or Mapping Tool: Before hitting the road, use a GPS or an online mapping tool to plan your route. These tools can give you the most direct and efficient route to your destination, minimizing unnecessary detours and extra miles. By taking the shortest path, you will reduce the amount of time spent on the road and consequently save on gas.
  • Avoid Traffic Congestion: Traffic congestion not only adds to the time spent on the road but also leads to increased idling and stop-and-go driving, which can significantly reduce fuel efficiency. Check for traffic updates before leaving and try to avoid busy periods or congested routes. Using navigation apps that provide real-time traffic information can help you steer clear of traffic jams and save on gas.
  • Combine Multiple Destinations: If you have multiple places to visit during your trip, try to combine them strategically to minimize driving distances. Plan an itinerary that groups destinations based on their proximity to each other, so you can visit them in a logical order, minimizing backtracking and unnecessary driving. This way, you can cover more ground with less driving, ultimately saving on gas.
  • Optimize Stops: When planning your route, consider the location of rest stops, gas stations, and other necessities along the way. Try to schedule your stops strategically to minimize extra driving. For example, plan your gas fill-ups near major highways or before entering areas with higher gas prices. By thinking ahead and optimizing your stops, you can save both time and money on gas.
  • Consider Scenic Routes: While scenic routes may not always be the most direct way to your destination, they can offer beautiful landscapes and interesting attractions. Before choosing a scenic route, carefully evaluate the additional driving distance and compare it with the time and fuel savings on the more direct route. If the scenic route is not too much longer and you have the time and budget for it, it can be a rewarding and enjoyable alternative.
  • Maintain an Efficient Driving Style: Regardless of the route you choose, adopting an efficient driving style can greatly improve your fuel economy. Avoid aggressive accelerating and braking, maintain a steady speed, and make good use of cruise control when appropriate. These driving habits can help you achieve better fuel efficiency, reducing the overall amount of gas consumed during your trip.

By planning your routes to minimize driving distances, you can save significant money on gas when traveling. Utilize GPS or mapping tools, avoid traffic congestion, combine multiple destinations, optimize your stops, and consider scenic routes when possible. Additionally, practicing efficient driving habits can further enhance your fuel economy. With a little bit of planning and strategic thinking, you can make the most of your road trip while keeping your gas expenses under control.

How to Travel from London to Edinburgh: A Complete Guide

When it comes to saving money on gas while traveling, one of the most effective strategies is to use alternative modes of transportation for shorter trips. Not only will this help you cut down on fuel costs, but it can also be a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly option. Here are some alternative modes of transportation you can consider for your shorter trips:

Walking is the simplest and most cost-effective way to travel short distances. It requires no fuel and is a great way to improve your health and fitness. If your destination is within a reasonable walking distance, consider leaving your car behind and enjoy a leisurely walk instead.

Cycling is another eco-friendly mode of transportation that can save you money on gas. You can use a bicycle to cover short to medium distances quickly. Not only will cycling help you get some exercise, but it also reduces the wear and tear on your car. Invest in a good quality bike and safety gear, and you'll be all set for your shorter trips.

Public Transportation:

Public transportation systems, such as buses and trains, are often an affordable way to travel within cities and towns. They offer convenience, reliability, and the opportunity to relax or catch up on work while commuting. Check the schedules and routes in your area to see if public transportation is a viable option for your shorter trips.

Carpooling:

If walking, cycling, or public transportation are not feasible options, consider carpooling. Carpools allow multiple people to share a ride and split the cost of fuel. You can coordinate with coworkers, friends, or neighbors who are traveling in the same direction. Carpooling not only saves money on gas but also reduces traffic congestion and lowers carbon emissions.

Electric Scooters or Skateboards:

Electric scooters and skateboards are becoming increasingly popular for short trips within cities. Renting an electric scooter or skateboard can be a fun and economical way to get around while saving on gas. Many cities now offer electric scooter-sharing programs, making it easy to find and rent these devices for your shorter trips.

Ridesharing Apps:

Ridesharing apps, such as Uber and Lyft, have revolutionized local transportation. Instead of driving your car, you can use these apps to request a ride from a nearby driver. Ridesharing can be more cost-effective than driving, especially for shorter trips. It also eliminates the hassle of finding parking and allows you to relax or focus on other tasks during your journey.

By utilizing alternative modes of transportation for your shorter trips, you can significantly reduce your reliance on gas and save money. Whether it's walking, cycling, using public transportation, carpooling, or trying out electric scooters or ridesharing apps, there are plenty of options to choose from. So, the next time you need to travel a short distance, consider leaving your car behind and exploring these alternative transportation methods.

From saving on gas to driving with kids, here's your ultimate road trip planner

road trip cost of gas

"Easy Travel” is a 10-part series focusing on how to reduce bumps during vacations, anticipate roadblocks and be ready when things aren’t going your way. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

Ina Daly has spent most of her life on the road.

“My dad was a truck driver and that led me to becoming a truck driver,” she said. “What we do in a day, on a daily job would be like a long road trip to most people.”

With nearly 40 years of driving for freight transportation services provider XPO and numerous industry accolades under her belt, including grand champion at this year’s Arizona Truck Driving Championship , Daly is a pro. She’s also a mom and a grandmother who’s happy to share her experiences to make everyone’s road trips better.

“Some of the things I'm telling you are what we truckers tell our family members,” she said. “I've had a lot of accomplishments in my career and going to the National Truck Driving Championships (this month) is a reward, but the bigger reward is being able to share some things
that have the potential to save lives.”

What to do before a long drive

“Make sure that your vehicle’s road trip ready,” Daly said. ”Really pay close attention to your tires, your coolant, your fan belt.”

She notes tire dealers often offer free inspections to ensure tires are properly inflated and undamaged.

AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz advises getting the whole car serviced before hitting the road.

“If you're a car person and you can, do that yourself at home, by all means,” she said. Otherwise, she recommends getting the oil changed and battery and tires checked professionally.

To save time and avoid stress, Diaz also suggests filling up on gas the night before leaving and making hotel reservations well in advance, noting that many hotels allow cancellations without penalty up until the day beforehand.

What do you need before a road trip?

It’s always good to keep an emergency kit with supplies like first aid, a flashlight and extra batteries, and basic tools in the vehicle.

“You want to make sure that if you do have a tire issue, you have the proper tools and jacks in your vehicle to be able to change it,” Daly said. She said warning signals like reflective triangles can also warn other drivers to steer clear in the event of a breakdown.

For road trips, both she and Diaz recommend shelf-stable snacks like protein bars that won’t melt and plenty of water. “Don't think that a bottle or two for everybody is enough,” Daly said. “You've got to have, you know, five or six bottles for everyone.”

Diaz also recommends wet wipes, blankets during the winter, and any time-sensitive medication or pet food that might be needed in the event of an extended delay.

“These things ideally wouldn't take up too much room in your trunk but they're just good to have in case of an emergency,” Diaz said. “Just think, ‘If I were stuck for a long time, what would keep me comfortable until I was able to (get) help?’”

A printed map and a general sense of the route can also help in case there GPS hiccups or a phone dies.  AAA’s free TripTik planner can help travelers plot their trips in advance and find rest stops, lodging, food and gas along the way. And its free Gas Cost Calculator can help locate the cheapest average gas prices for drivers when it’s time to refuel.

What I should know before a road trip?

“Everything can be a distraction in the car – the radio, the kids, etc. But the phone is a big one,” Daly advised. “When you’re driving, that thing should not ever be in your hand.”

More than 3,500 people were killed on U.S. roads in 2021 because of distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .

Daly also recommends watching out for distracted drivers.

“You can tell a distracted driver by their fluctuating speed,” she warned. “They're drifting in their lane. Their head is looking down instead of focusing on the road. You want to give those people a wide berth.”

How long will a road trip take?

Road trips always take longer than expected because of traffic, construction and other things that arise en route.

Diaz says to expect at least an hour longer than whatever the GPS predicts. Daly recommends leaving at least two hours early.

“You don't want that stressful drive,” Daly said. “You’re hurrying. That lends to bad driving behaviors like tailgating and speeding, which leads to accidents. Don’t put yourself in that situation.”

How many hours a day should you drive on a road trip?

“It just varies so much from person to person, how long they’re comfortable driving,” Diaz said. “We want to err on the side of safety. We want people to be safe on the roads and drive the speed limit and not rush it, but everybody's different.”

Switching out drivers can lighten the load, but no matter who is driving, Daly said, “If you're starting to feel a little, less attentive, maybe a little fatigued, it’s time to take a break.”

What time is best to drive?

“We always recommend, especially during the holidays, leave early in the morning,” Diaz said. “The later you leave in the day, the worse it's going to be because a lot of times during the week
you're going to mix with those commuters on the road.”

“Some people enjoy night driving,” she added. “Once you get to like 8 p.m., 9 p.m. traffic comes down a lot.”

However, she noted drivers who leave in the evening should watch out for fatigue and plan to drive less than if they started fresh in the morning.

How do you take a good road trip with kids?

When possible, Daly recommends having a designated passenger to help with kids so the driver can focus on the road.

Another important thing is to keep seatbelts on the whole way.

“Kids have a tendency to take those off,” Daly said. “Make sure they stay buckled up. I've seen some horrible things out there.”

'I just want to see more of us': The importance of seeing people like you while traveling

What do kids need on a road trip?

Entertainment helps pass the time, but it doesn’t have to be digital. There are all sorts of screen-free road trip games .

Diaz recommends printing a map or list of sites or cities for kids to watch for along the way.

“You know, yell it out or mark it on your sheet,” she said. “Have some crayons in the car with them so they're following along on the trip, and they feel like they're part of it.”

“Point out historical landmarks and scenery; enjoy nature,” Daly echoed. “That's one of the things that we truck drivers love about our jobs is we get to see the country and nature.”

Stop at points of interest every few hours or simply for everyone to stretch their legs.

And for those times when kids are on screens, make sure to pack car chargers.

What is the best way to save gas?

Don’t speed.

“Fuel economy peaks at around 50 miles per hour on most cars, and then it drops off as the speeds increase,” Diaz said. “You think, ‘OK, if I just go 70, I'm going to get there faster, and it'll be better,’ but essentially, you're just wasting gas at that point." Fuel economy can be increased by as much as 15% by reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 miles per hour, she said.

Don’t idle unnecessarily either, like at rest stops.

“Your car engine consumes about a quarter to a half a gallon of fuel per hour while it's idling,” she said. “But a warm engine only takes about 10 seconds’ worth of fuel to restart, so if it's safe to do so, just shut off your engine.”

Story continues below.

What happens if my tire blows out?

“When you blow a tire, kaboom, it freaks you out. Do not panic,” Daly said. “Don't slow down abruptly or brake hard or jerk the wheel because that will cause you to lose control and have an accident.”

“Just focus on steering,” she added. “Slow very gradually, off to the side of the road in a safe area, and you won’t have any issue from your blown tire.”

How do you drive around semitrucks?

“Be aware of our needs and limitations,” Daly said. “You know we’re big. We need a lot of space around us. We have big blind spots.
If you can’t see the truck driver’s face in the mirrors of the truck, the truck driver can’t see you.”

She advised against passing on the right.

“If you have to pass quickly, don’t linger over there. We see people driving over there for the shade (and it) puts us in a very dangerous situation,” she said. “And don’t cut in front of us and then hit your breaks. People don’t like to follow a truck because they can’t see around us, so they pass us and then cut in front of us.”

“It takes away that safety cushion we leave in front of us,” she added. “When you see all that space in front of a truck, that's not for your convenience so that you can pass us and cut into it. That’s for our safety and yours.”

By the same token, she advised fellow drivers to leave plenty of space in front of their own vehicles, so they have enough room to stop quickly in an emergency. If another driver cuts into that space, she suggested, “Take a break. Slow down again. Recreate that space. Bite your tongue and think pure thoughts.”

That last tip may not be so easy.

Inflation rate shows prices still rising, but not as fast as they were earlier this year

road trip cost of gas

The rate of inflation in the U.S. fell to the lowest in three years, a welcome reprieve from the stubborn price increases that flared again in recent months.

That doesn’t mean prices are going down. It just means they aren’t going up as quickly. The consumer price index, which measures the price of everything from milk to airfare, rose 3.4 percent in April compared to a year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It peaked at 9 percent in 2022.

Price data for Colorado, which is calculated using prices in the metro Denver, won’t be updated until next month. The most recent Colorado data, released in April, showed inflation in Denver was cooling faster than it was in the U.S., reversing a year-long trend. A big part of that drop was due to falling gas prices in Colorado. That could change in the coming months because people drive more during the summer, which pushes up gas prices.

Costs of groceries in Colorado compared to other states

Here are some statistics on how Colorado stacks up with other states when it comes to spending on grocery items, one of the biggest pain points for shoppers for the last couple of years.

  • Roughly 8 percent of all consumer spending in Colorado goes toward groceries. That puts the state in the middle of the pack relative to other states. At one end of the spectrum is Mississippi, where groceries account for 9.8 percent of shopping bills. At the other end is Minnesota, where groceries eat up 6.9 percent of the budget.
  • The average weekly grocery bill for a single person in Colorado is $149. The state’s northern neighbors in Wyoming pay $150. In Kansas, the weekly grocery bill for one person is $146
  • Feeding a family of four for a week in Colorado costs $341. In Wyoming, it’s $325 and in Kansas, it’s $276.

The data was compiled by Trace One, a company that works on product development for food and beverage companies.

More than 2.5M Floridians are expected to travel over Memorial Day Weekend. What to know

road trip cost of gas

Memorial Day weekend  is expected to be the busiest in nearly two decades, at least in terms of travel.

According to AAA, nearly 44 million Americans are expected to travel over the  three-day weekend . More than 2.5 million Floridians said that they plan to travel at least 50 miles. That's about 126,500 more holiday travelers than the previous high, which was set in 2023.

"Memorial Day will be the start to a very busy summer of travel," said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "American travelers are forecast to surpass pre-pandemic levels, making this the busiest Memorial Day holiday weekend in nearly two decades. The main driver of the projection is strong consumer interest in traveling both domestically and abroad. Interest in traveling internationally is at the highest level in recent years."

Here's what to know about  Memorial Day weekend travel .

38.4 million Americans expected to road trip over Memorial Day weekend

Americans are expected to break road tripping records in both Florida and the U.S. as nearly 1.5 million more people are anticipated to be on the road compared to last year. An estimated 38.4 million people are projected to drive to their Memorial Day weekend destination, according to AAA.

Florida gas prices are slightly ahead of Memorial Day weekend travel

At the time of publishing, Florida's average gas price for regular fuel is approximately $3.49, up three cents from last year's average.

"Drivers should expect continued volatility at the pump as the summer driving season ramps up," Jenkins continued. "The wildcard remains the cost of oil. And unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – which have the ability to roil the oil market at any time."

Memorial Day weekend air travel expects a 4.8% increase

Airports throughout the county are already bracing for a spike in traffic as AAA expects about 3.51 million Americans to travel by air over the weekend. This marks a 4.8% increase over last year and a 9% increase compared to 2019.

AAA says that this year's Memorial Day weekend will be the most crowded at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million Americans flew for the holiday after rebounding from 9/11.

Airfare is up 2% from last year

AAA booking data shows the average price for a round trip domestic flight is up to a whopping $778, up 2% from last year. International flights are also up 4%, averaging $1,485 for a roundtrip ticket.

Domestic hotel prices are down, and so are car rentals

Domestic hotel prices are less expensive than last year. Hotel bookings with AAA showed domestic hotels are 5% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to last. The total average cost per stay (which can be multiple nights) is $500. International hotels are about the same as last year. The average cost per stay is $660.

Domestic car rentals are 17% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to last. The average total cost for a rental (which is typically for a few days) is $439. International car rentals are 16% cheaper. The average total cost for a rental (which is typically for a few days) is $617.
