Firstly, in the comparison between the Rome Tourist Card and the Omnia Card , I favor the former. The Vatican pass is notably more expensive (149€ – see the latest price here ) and offers limited time usage (a maximum of 72 hours).

Next, when considering the Rome Tourist Card vs the Roma Pass , I again prefer the former. Although the Roma Pass is less expensive, it is significantly more restricted in terms of ticket validity (48 or 72 hours – see the latest price here ) and does not include access to the Vatican.

Lastly, comparing the Rome Tourist Card with the Turbopass and the Go City Explorer , the decision largely depends on the final price and the number of options selected. 

For a 5-day duration, the Rome Turbopass is priced at 145€ ( see the price in detail here ), and the Go City Explorer, offering 5 activities of choice, costs 139€ ( check the latest rate here ). This makes them 40€ to 50€ more expensive than the Rome Tourist Card.

Whether the Roma Pass or City Passes are worthwhile is hotly debated. Here you will find all advantages and disadvantages at a glance.

Most people expect a Rome City Pass to save them money. The question is whether you can actually take advantage of many offers without just rushing from one museum to the next.

However, with Rome Passes that include reservations, you can really save time. You don’t have to gather all the services and tickets individually but book everything together at once. You can see at a glance which dates are available at the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, so you can coordinate the dates. If you have to register and verify on several websites, it will take you several hours from research to bookings and the individual payments.

Basically, there are two categories of passes :

• without public transport, with delivery by e-mail and including reservations for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums.
• including ÖPNV, with pickup on site but without reservations for the museums.

Roma Passes with reservations

All reservations are included with the Turbo Pass, the Vatican City Pass and the Rome Tourist Pass. Delivery is by email. The  advantage  is that when you buy the passes you are sure that you can actually visit the museums.

Turbopass Rome

The Turbopass Rome is a very flexible pass. It can be booked with a validity of 1 – 7 days. In addition to the reservations for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, the Turbo Pass offers access to numerous other museums and exhibitions and a day ticket for the hop on hop off buses.

Optionally, the guided tour of the Vatican Museums and the airport transfer can be booked. You can also book public transport tickets, but you have to pick them up on site.

Public transport and Roma passes

Does it make sense to buy the Roma Pass or the Omnia Card with the 72h public transport ticket? We’re not convinced.

Rome has a very small city center and you can usually do almost everything on foot. There are only long distances if you have the hotel at Termini train station or further outside the city center. Some sights such as the Basilica of St. John, the Basilica of St. Paul, the catacombs or the monumental cemetery are outside the center and you need a means of transport. Whether you take single tickets or multi-day tickets depends on where the accommodation is located and what you want to visit.

Basically, it is important to know that you have to pick up the passes with public transport in Rome. With the public transport option in the Turbopass you have to redeem a voucher in Rome.

Getting public transport tickets in Rome is not difficult. There are single tickets, 24h/48h/72h tickets and weekly tickets at reasonable prices. You can find more details about all ticket types including e-tickets in our article on Metrebus Tickets .

Private pickup at the airport

It is very convenient to be picked up privately from the airport and the driver will arrange the 72-hour ticket for you. Reservation is extremely easy and you pay for the journey and ticket directly with the driver.

Passes without reservations

The Roma Pass and the Omnia Card must be picked up on site. Reservations are not included. You should make the reservations  before  purchasing any of these passes. Otherwise you risk, especially in the high season, that the Colosseum or the Borghese Gallery are already fully booked and you cannot visit the desired museum despite the Roma Pass.

The   Roma Pass   is the official tourism card of the municipality of Rome.

The Roma Pass offers free travel on public transport for 48h or 72h.

You can also visit one museum for free with the 48h pass or two museums with the 72h pass. However, most museums require an extra reservation. The Vatican Museums are not included.

The whole procedure seems a bit cumbersome to us. In this case it is easier to book the museums directly.

Child discount

There is no child discount with the  Roma Pass.  Children up to the age of 10 have free travel on public transport. Children up to the age of 5 have free entry to the museums of the Municipality of Rome. Children and young people up to the age of 18 have free entry to the state museums.

The Omnia Card is the city card of the Roman pilgrimage. It combines the Roma Pass with the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, preferential entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, audio guide and entry to the cloister of the Basilica of St. John – the seat of the Bishop of Rome – and entry to the Carcer Tullianum, where the Apostle Peter was said to have been imprisoned. You can also use the yellow hop on hop off buses with the Omnia Card.

4) Roma Pass 48 hours or 72 hours

Is the Roma Pass worth it? We recommend the Rome Tourist Card . This pass includes the Colosseum. The tickets for the Public Transportation, that's included in the Roma Pass, you can simply buy at a machine at one of the metro or bus stops. Another disadvantage is that you still have to collect your Roma Pass card on the spot. With the Rome Tourist Card you will receive the tickets online.

The following is included in the Roma Pass 48 hours :

• 2 days (or 3 days) use of the public transportation (ATAC) in Rome (bus, tram, metro and some train lines)
• Access to one museum or archeologic site (check out all museums at this page ). This is also the biggest disadvantage of the Roma Pass, during high season the popular highlights like the Colosseum and the Borghese Gallery are probably already sold out. The 72-hour card includes two museums.

5) Vatican & Rome Omnia Card

You can order the Vatican & Rome Omnia Card for 72 hours. This is the most expensive, but also one of the most comprehensive city passes. It contains various entrance tickets, public transport and the Hop on Hop off bus. This Omnia card has a number of advantages and disadvantages:

• Access to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum
• Including public transport
• Including Hop on Hop off bus
• Includes access to San Giovanni in Laterano and Mamertine prison
• Including guide booklet and map
• Advantage: You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before your trip
• Disadvantage: You still need to exchange your voucher for a physical card at a transfer point in Rome after booking (however, it is very close to the entrance of St. Peter's Basilica)

Our advice : The Omnia Card is a fine card that contains almost everything, but you still have to pick it up. However, the Omnia Card is the card with the best cancellation options.

6) Rome Travel Card

Do you want to use public transport in Rome? However, there are also many other cards in circulation such as the ' Best of Rome Pass ', ' Vatican and Rome Experience Pass ' and ' Rome Underground Pass '. Are Rome passes worth it for families? Learn what Rome discount cars include, compare prices and check if Rome passes are worth it for families vs booking individual attractions.

If you are visiting Rome for a limited number of days and plan on extensive sightseeing, you may be wondering about city passes and discount cards.

Rome has several solutions of this type and they combine access to public transport with discounted or even free entrance to museums and sights of interest.

Whether these passes are worth it or not depends very much on individual circumstances.

To help you decide if and which, if any, of the Rome discount passes available is best for you, I have gathered info about the ones I know of in this article.

Rome discount passes for families: what you need to know

When looking for a Rome pass for families, you are looking to get a card that saves you time, money and the hassle of having to book different attractions on different, and sometimes hard to navigate, websites.

I believe therefore the following points will be useful to help you make a decision:

• Children under 10 go free on public transport in Rome
• Children under 18 enter the Colosseum for free
• Children under 6 enter the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel for free ; children between 6 and 18 (included) avail of a reduced entrance
• Due to capacity limits, many attractions such as the Colosseum require advance booking even from pass holders . This mans that while the pass will give you a discount or even free entry, you still have to select a day and time slot on the official website.

This is not the case for all passes but it is common: please check the small print on each one to make sure the pass give you the saving of time /money/ work you are hoping for

• All tickets with a time slot are skip the line ticket s. Since the pandemic, a system of time slot has been implemented by many attractions, especially popular ones such as the Colosseum and the Vatican

This system has meant the end of long lines: ticket holders can go to the ‘ticket holder’ line which only has people booked in for that time slot and enter swiftly.

The horribly long lines you hear horror stories about are only for getting tickets on the day (not always possible since rules against gatherings have been in place).

So if you see a ticket that costs more because it allows you to ‘skip the line’, make sure you are compering it with a time slot ticket and you are not paying over the odds for a service you get anyway

• Please note that security lines cannot be skipped.
• On the first Sunday of the month, many Rome museums are free

How to choose a Rome discount pass or card

To help you decide whether a Rome pass is a good purchase for your next trip, I have gathered info about the discount cards and passes currently available.

The Roma Pass is a discount card issued by the City of Rome in collaboration with ATAC (Rome’s public transport authority) and comes in two forms: a 2-day (48h) or a 3-day (72h) pass.

Unlike standard  tickets and passes, this card combines a transport pass valid on all transport modes with access to some local museums and in particular:

• 2 free entries (3-day pass) or 1 free entry (2-day pass) to participating museums or archaeological sites
• Discounted tickets for all other museums that participate in the Roma Pass
• Dedicated entry at the Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo, and Musei Capitolini

The Roma Pass is activated from the moment it is first used at an entry to a museum, an archaeological site, or when you first board public transportation and expires after 72 or 48 hours after initial activation.

Need to know: to avail of the discount, the first two entries to museums and/or sites with the  Roma Pass 72 hours  have to be used consecutively. From the third admission ( Roma Pass 72 hours ) and from the second admission ( Roma Pass 48 hours ), it is necessary to purchase a reduced ticket at museum’s ticket office. 

Please note that Vatican City and its attractions (Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica etc) are not covered by this pass.

The Pass does not include guided tours and is only suitable for self-guided sightseeing

Hop on hop off buses are also excluded from this offer .

The vast number of museums available at a discount makes the Roma Pass very tempting for people interested in intense sightseeing.

Since families with kids are likely to only avail of kid-friendly attractions, I prepared a sample itinerary that allows to you see what type of savings you can achieve.

As you can see, if your plan includes several attractions like those above and you plan your time wisely, there are significant savings to be made.

However, should you want to avail of guided tours or have an itinerary that in includes the Vatican rather than the attractions participating in the Roma Pass network, the pass may not be for you.

Please note:

• The Roma pass does not foresee discounts for children under 10 and it also not really suitable for them since they travel for free on public transport anyway and have free admission to most (not all) museums and sites

Roma Omnia Card + Rome City Pass = Rome and Vatican Pass

The Omnia Card is provided by the private organization Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi in collaboration with the City of Rome.

It is the most expensive of the passes currently available and costs €129 for adults/€59 for children (ages 6-17) for 72 hours.

The pass is sold in conjunction with the Roma Pass and offers the same advantages as the one above, with in addition entrance to the Vatican Museums, Audio Guide to St Peter Basilica, Hop on Hop Of bus with Roma Cristiana, entrance to San Giovanni in Laterano Basilica, entrance to Tulliano Prison and the app Vox Dei.

The Omnia Card 24h includes

• Entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel (with a free, downloadable audio guide for St. Peter’s Basilica)
• Free hop-on-hop-off bus tour (Roma Cristiana, with free wifi) for 24 hours
• Entry to the Cloister in the St. Paul’s Basilica outside the walls

While the Omnia Card 72 hours include:

• Entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel (with a free, downloadable audio guide for St. Peter’s Basilica)
• Roma Pass for 2 free entries to the museums or archaeological sites of your choice and free access to public transportation for 72 hours
• Entry to the Cloister in the St. Paul’s Basilica outside the walls
• Skip the Line advantage at St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel and the Colosseum

• Access to St peter’s basilica is through security gates and no one skips the line here. The skip the line element of this card applies to the Museums but not the basilica itself (which is, incidentally, free)

Rome city pass / Turbo  Pass – NOT CURRENTLY AVAIABLE

The name of this pass is so similar to the one above I had to check once, twice and even three times to make sure I wasn’t mixing up the info about the several discount passes available in Rome but here we go. The Rome city pass aka Turbo pass is one more to add to the list and one that is appealing mostly thanks to its flexibility and price

Unlike the passes mentioned above, the Rome Turbo pass offers:

• Entry to top attractions of Ancient Rome: including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill with skip the line priorities
• Entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
• Entry to Rome’s most popular museums and reduced entry into additional attractions and exhibitions
• Use of public transport including the metro, buses (including Ciampino airport), and trams
• Hop-on-hop-off bus tour in Rome
• Map of Rome and Travel Information
• Additional discounts and savings across the city at exhibitions, tours and shops

The Rome City Pass can be shipped by mail or can be picked up in the city center of Rome. You will have immediate access to the metro system and to buses and trains across the whole of Rome. You can order from the official website here.

Archeologia Card – not currently available

I include this card in the list even if currently unavailable because many traveler forum chats mention it and it had piqued my attention (and therefore, I presume, yours). The card is currently not operational, I will update this entry if / when things change.

So, is it worth getting a Rome travel and museum pass?

As you can see from the examples above, there is no one size fit all answer when it comes to Rome passes.

The best way to see if a pass is worth for you, is to make an itienerary with the number of attractions you are likely to actually see, keeping into account the slower pace you’ll keep with small kids with you and compare it with what you can save with the pass.

What to consider when choosing a Rome discount card

• Can you get a discount anyway? Some categories of visitors are already entitled to discounts (seniors, teachers, students, all with ID and depending on specific museums)
• Are you traveling with kids? Kids under 10  do not benefit from these cards as they travel for free on public transport and often get discounts to Rome main sights and museums
• Do you intend on taking a guided tour? These cards sometimes includes downloadable apps and maps but not access to a guide. If you are planning on taking a guided tour, it is better to book directly with the one of choice since the cost usually includes that of the skip the line ticket.
• How many sites with entrance fee will you want to see? Evaluate carefully how many sites you will see in one day and be advised that some sites have a combined ticket. For instance, the Colosseum and the forum are covered by one tickets alone so the card won’t add much of an advantage. • Will you be using the hop on hop off pass and for where. Hop on hop off buses can be great to get an overview of the city but not for small journeys. Be advised that some areas such as Spanish steps, Trevi and Pantheon are pedestrianized and inaccessible to buses – please make sure the itinerary covered by the hop on hop off pass is suitable: different companies offer different itineraries
• Will you be visiting on the first Sunday of the month? On the first Sunday of each month Rome municipal museums are free. Make sure you do not spend money on a card if your stay includes this day!

Roma Pass è conveniente soltanto se non potete accedere ad altri sconti . L’accesso al Colosseo e ai Musei Capitolini già compensa il costo totale della tessera e, in più, disporrete gratuitamemente del trasporto pubblico e di sconti nelle visite che realizzerete.

Roma & Piú Pass

La Roma & Piú Pass è simile alla Roma Pass ma include il trasporto nella periferia della città, anche se anche in questo caso non arriva fino agli aeroporti .

La differenza di prezzo è minima e perció questa tessera soltanto è interessante se volete visitare le varie ville di Tivoli ( Villa Adriana , Villa d’Este o Villa Gregoriana), dato che il trasporto è incluso.

In order to travel on the Rome Metro you need to have a valid ticket.

Timed Integrated Ticket (BIT)

The basic ticket is the BIT (integrated timed ticket). It costs 1.50 euros and allows you to travel on all Rome Metro lines, as well as buses and trams.

The hourly limit of the ticket is 100 minutes, as long as you do not exit the subway turnstiles.

Attention: if you jump from Metro A to Metro C or vice versa at San Giovanni station you will have to pay twice for the ticket, because you are forced to exit the turnstile and come back (a problem that will be solved in the future with an underground connection between the two metro).

Children are exempt within the tenth year of age.

Monthly and annual subscriptions

Both monthly and annual subscriptions are available to users.

Monthly subscriptions

The price of the Personal Monthly subscription is 35 euros and is valid for the calendar month shown on the subscription or on the top-up receipt. It allows unlimited rides on the whole territory of the Municipality of Rome. The monthly impersonal subscription differs from the personal monthly one because it allows two people to take advantage of the same travel pass, for a monthly cost of 53 euros.

Annual subscription

The annual subscription , which is valid for 365 days, costs € 250.00 and allows unlimited travel throughout the period.

The Roma Pass is the solution offered by the Roman administration for tourists who have a few days to visit Rome. These are timed tickets, which allow unlimited travel on public transport for 24, 48 and 72 hours, starting from the first stamping.

Discounts for the elderly and unemployed

For those who are over 70 years of age and show an Isee income of less than 15 thousand euros, a specific card has been designed which allows the use of public transport free of charge.

The monthly subscribtion for unemployed , valid for the calendar month shown on the receipt, costs 16.00 euros and allows an unlimited number of trips.

What happens if I don’t have a valid ticket or travel ticket?

The traveler without a valid ticket, in addition to the payment of the ride, is subject to an administrative sanction from 100 to 500 euros. This penalty is reduced to 50 euros if it is paid within 5 days of the dispute. It is not possible to pay contextually to the dispute (paragraph 3, art.10, Regional Law no. 52 of 3 December 1982 and subsequent amendments). It is also valid for title not validated or validated several times and a personalized title without the necessary identity document.

Can I carry bulky luggage on the Metro?

Yes, as long as they fall into these cases:

• Luggage not larger than 50x30x25
• Musical instruments (one per passenger) inside the case, within the dimensions of 150x50x20
• Strollers for children, to be folded to use escalators

If the baggage exceeds even one of the maximum dimensions of 50x30x25, you need to have an additional ordinary ticket. In any case, the baggage cannot exceed the dimensions of 80x45x25.

Can I take the bicycle on the Metro?

Yes. The following are allowed:

• Folding bicycles without limitations, provided they are closed and with dimensions (when closed) not exceeding 110x80x40 cm.
• non-motorized bicycles as long as you purchase an additional ticket and only under certain conditions (which, we hope, will not remain so for a long time, editor’s note). Metrebus ticket holders and children under 12 years of age use the service free of charge (provided they are accompanied by an adult).

Bicycle transport conditions

It is possible to access the bicycle transport service only from stations that foresee the presence of lifts or stairs less than 2 meters wide (it is forbidden to ride bicycles on escalators. It is also forbidden to carry bicycles on fixed stairs, when the escalators are out of service) .
