A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

royal caribbean my cruises account

A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.

The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.

Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.

“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.

The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.

Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.

“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.

Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.

According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”

Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.

The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.

After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”

At the pier, you will receive a SeaPass card for each guest once all identification documents have been validated. You will use the SeaPass card to board/leave the ship in every port of call during your cruise vacation.  Please have it with you at all times.

For guests who have made their air arrangements through Royal Caribbean Int'l (and are arriving on the day of boarding), our airport meet & greet staff will meet you in the Baggage Claim Area or outside of Customs (for international flights) to direct you to your transportation between the airport and ship.  Please refer to your Transfer Voucher for more specific details on transportation, meeting locations, start times and frequency of transfers. Guests that are cruise only (i.e., have not made air arrangements through us) may also purchase this transfer service (called Royal connections) separately.  Please contact your travel agent or us for details.

Yes.  Guests who have completed Online Check-In will have an area designated for their documentation validation.  By checking in online, you will expedite your boarding process and will be able to start enjoying your cruise vacation much faster.  Look for the SetSail Pass signs at the pier.

If clicking the print button in the SetSail Pass pop-up window does not launch the printer dialog window, try holding down the command key and "P" if you're on a Mac or the control key and "P" in you're on a PC.  This should launch your printer dialog window.

An Onboard Expense Account is the cashless system used for all onboard purchases and services. The account may be set-up with either a credit card or as a cash account.  You may establish a master account and add guests from your stateroom or another stateroom as authorized purchasers on your account. For each purchase made onboard the ship you will receive a receipt at the point of sale.  A final statement will be delivered to your stateroom on the last night of your cruise vacation for your review. Guests that set up an account with a credit card should verify the statement.  If all purchases are correct, they will automatically be billed to the credit card. Guests on a cash account will need to settle their statement onboard prior to disembarking.  The ship will provide you with specific details.

Great Idea; Needs Work

This is great when it actually works. I haven’t been able to log in for over a week now. The app just doesn’t connect to anything.
This is one of the worse apps I’ve ever dealt with. It’s impossible to get signed in & it says it will send an email to reset password but it never arrives even though the email address is correct & it isn’t in my spam file. It is totally useless. There was NO WAY I could get into the app to check in for my upcoming cruise. I’ve given up & I'm not the only one who has had problems with it. It needs a total redesign.

Still doesn’t work

Haven’t been able to log in through the app for months. Error message says “Unable to Bind/Authenticate to the Active Directory Server (OpenDS). Thought it would be fixed with the latest update but still the same error. No issues logging in with a browser on laptop.

Royal Caribbean cruise cancels trip after guests already boarded

A Royal Caribbean cruise to Alaska was scrapped after guests had already boarded the ship.

The ship, “Radiance of the Seas,” had been experiencing some propulsion issues , causing the cruise liner to shorten and eventually cancel the weeklong itinerary through Alaska.

The cruise was initially planned to set sail from Vancouver, but the cruise liner announced it would remain in port for two days before setting sail. But then, the captain announced Saturday afternoon that guests would need to disembark the ship by Sunday at 4 p.m.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement . “Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.”

Guests on board the cruise had mixed reactions.

“While I’m still very sad I didn’t get to see Alaska this year, I believe I’ll have another opportunity to go, and this cancellation provided an additional opportunity to get to know Vancouver, which is truly a very cool city,” one passenger wrote on the Royal Caribbean blog.

Another passenger, however, said she doesn’t think she’ll use Royal Caribbean the next time she goes to Alaska.

“I would like to go to Alaska,” passenger Charlene Chong told USA Today. “I’m not sure if I want to go with them.”

This isn’t the first time a Royal Caribbean cruise has had to change its itinerary recently.

The cruise liner stopped ships from docking at a private island port in Haiti due to ongoing violence in the region.

This decision by Royal Caribbean to change the itinerary on that cruise came after the U.S. issued a warning to tourists to avoid traveling to Haiti at this time due to an increase in gang-related violence.

Royal Caribbean is hiring 10,000 workers in 2024 to keep up with high cruise demands

Royal Caribbean is hiring 10,000 workers in 2024 to keep up with surging demand in cruise travel, according to a report from Reuters.

Tourists taking cruises hit a record in 2023, and there is no signs that tourism is slowing.

Therefore, Royal Caribbean is trying to bolster its labor force this year as it brings on three new ships.

The cruise liner is asking several partner universities in the Caribbean to shore up short-term courses and certifications so more people can be qualified to work at sea.

Royal Caribbean is also in talks with port authorities in St. Maarten, the British Virgin Islands and the Gambia Tourism Board to drum up support for additional staff.

Royal Caribbean’s hiring spree comes as the cruise liner has hit some snafus with some of its itineraries and ships so far this year.

Royal Caribbean canceled a cruise to Alaska after passengers had already boarded due to a malfunction with the ship.

The cruise liner also stopped ships from docking at a private island port in Haiti due to ongoing violence in the region.

This decision by Royal Caribbean to change the itinerary on that cruise came after the U.S. issued a warning to tourists to avoid traveling to Haiti at this time due to an increase in gang-related violence.

The Best Cruise Restaurants Onboard Mariner Of The Seas

Where to find the best cruise food on this top-rated voyager class cruise ship..

By Amanda Mesa | Published on May 10, 2024

As a former food critic, dining plays a big role in every aspect of my life — especially when it comes to vacations. My family teases me about the fact that when it comes to planning cruise getaways, the ship’s food scene impacts my decision-making as much as onboard attractions or the ports of call on the itinerary. For many years, I’ve counted Mariner of the Seas among my favorite cruise ships.

For starters, it’s a smaller ship and therefore offers the more intimate atmosphere that I prefer over larger cruise ships. But above all, the food scene onboard this Voyager Class stunner is unparalleled. It’s home to some of my favorite cruise restaurants, including Royal Caribbean classics like Izumi and Chef’s Table. It also boasts one of my all-time favorite cruise restaurants, Playmakers SM  Bar & Arcade.

That’s in addition to casual, complimentary cruise dining at Windjammer, Dog House and Café Promenade, as well as elevated, multi-course dinners at the main dining room. Without a doubt, I’ve enjoyed some of the best cruise food ever when sailing on Mariner of the Seas. Here’s a cheat sheet to the top dining options that await onboard.
