Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Lots of people dream of taking an African safari. Yet for many, it seems otherworldly and out of reach. Of course, leave it to Disney to make dreams come true. When you stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, you’ll experience all the creature comforts of a world-class resort while feeling like you’re on the best kind of safari. Think no canteens, eminent danger, mosquito nets or hot nights. Did we mention up-close encounters with giraffes grazing and ostriches padding along the savanna?
Authentic Touches
Designed in the typical African kraal style, the horseshoe shaped resort overlooks four savannas. Although the resort’s main lure is the magnificent wildlife, Disney does a phenomenal job of integrating African art, culture and cuisine into this AAA Four Diamond-rated property.
Upon entering, you will be greeted by towering ceilings strung with impressive chandeliers, a thatched roof, a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the savanna, and an enormous fireplace perfect for storytelling.
Jambo House, the original Deluxe Resort, and the Kidani Village, a Disney Vacation Club ® Resort, both have the air of an exotic locale, but at the same time feel warm and welcoming as if you’ve come home. Although the savanna-view rooms are optimal, each floor offers an open-air balcony with stunning views and rocking chairs beckoning guests to unwind.
Animals aren’t the only amazing view. Peruse one of the largest collections of African art in the world featured throughout the resort. Behold the Igbo Ijele Mask, towering at over 16 feet tall and 8 feet in width. Whatever you do, carve out time to chat with Cast Members who are actually from a wide range of African countries. These ambassadors are more than willing to share their stories and histories, which only add to the rich quality of the experience.
Majestic Wildlife
Besides a true African safari, where else could you wake up and walk out onto a balcony and spot a zebra? A state-of-the-art barrier system allows Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge guests the opportunity to view wildlife in a setting like no other.
The four lush savannas are home to over 200 animals representing over 30 species. Be prepared to marvel at the wildlife right outside your balcony or even in the common lookout areas.
For your convenience, each guest room is equipped with a Wildlife Guide Book making it easy to identify and learn about the majestic animals roaming the savannas. Animal guides are on hand to share wildlife information and even impart practical know-how on animal tracking. Some of the animals you may track are zebras, giraffes, gazelles, kudu, Ankole cattle, water bucks, wildebeests, geese, cranes and flamingoes.
Culinary Explorations
In keeping with the African theme, all restaurants at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge feature African-inspired cuisine as well as American cuisine. At Boma — Flavors of Africa, it’s a buffet to beat all buffets for breakfast and dinner. Omelets, carved ham, French toast and exceptionally fluffy scrambled eggs are big hits with the breakfast crowd.
At dinner time, stroll in and watch chefs prepare savory roasted meats and grilled seafood. There’s also a nice balance of vegetarian specialties and salads. Zebra domes are a dessert standout. Almost truffle-like, this sweet concoction is a combination of a thin layer of cake topped with an Amarula cream liquor mousse coated with white chocolate ganache. Chocolate drizzle forms stripes that give this yummy creation its namesake.
Distinguished as fine dining, Jiko — The Cooking Place is not to be missed. For starters, you want to try the artisanal cheese selection along with a wine pairing from their extensive wine collection. Entrees vary from lobster tail to Bostwana-style seswaa beef short rib to maize-crusted halibut. As for dessert, the Ghanian chocolate & Kenyan coffee pot de crème is a delightful finish to a meal that undoubtedly will leave a lasting impression.
Venture to Sanaa for a variety of flavorful slow-cooked meat entrees, inventive salads and seasonal vegetarian offerings. Casual or on-the-go diners will enjoy The Mara, where you can sit down for a tasty African stew or select from plenty of American fare — salads, sandwiches and more. Best of all, they even sell packaged zebra domes for those with a sweet tooth on the go. And crafted specialty cocktail like the Mt. Kilimarita or an ice-cold Casa Blanca lager from Morocco are available at Victoria Falls Lounge — a great spot to congregate before or after dinner.
Relaxation is inevitable while lounging by the pool, and this one is a zero-entry, 11,000-square-foot pool with a 67-foot water slide, which mimics a natural watering hole and also features a children’s wading pool as well as two hot tub areas.
The Samawati Springs Pool has a water slide and two hot tub areas. It also boasts an animal-themed water playground named Uwanja Camp, where squirting Venus flytraps, a rope bridge and water cannons make this the ultimate, fun-spirited playground.
Every day, families can also take advantage of scheduled animal-related activities and educational workshops. At sunset, weather permitting, there’s even a Disney movie under the stars at the main pool.
If shopping is your thing, then head to Zawadi Market Place, an authentic purveyor of African-crafted jewelry, baskets, masks and a variety of one-of-a-kind souvenirs. And for those seeking other indoor activities, the Zahanati Massage & Fitness Center is the perfect spot to grab a quick workout or decompress with a relaxing massage. As the sun dips and night falls, you’re in for a special treat — a campfire with storytelling, sing-a-longs and scrumptious roasted marshmallows under a night sky.

Bottom Line
Modeled after a traditional "kraal" (village), Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge brings a slice of Africa to Orlando. Surrounded by four massive savannas, this 972-room upscale hotel offers guests a hands-on safari experience. Balconies overlook zebra watering holes, safari guides are on-hand to explain the differences between gazelle species, and custom trucks give guests special access to giraffes, impalas, and wildebeest. Rooms are infused with authentic African decor and artwork, and the hotel’s top-notch amenities like a pool, multiple restaurants, and a fitness center, make it one of Disney’s best Deluxe properties. However, it’s at least a 10-minute drive from most Disney attractions, and there’s no monorail or water taxi service (only shuttle buses). The Grand Floridian offers more convenient transportation options, but it doesn’t have AKL’s intriguing African theme.

Oyster Hotel Review
What are the grounds and scene like at disney’s animal kingdom lodge, this african-themed disney property feels equally adult- and kid-friendly, with upscale safari decor, roaming animals, and multiple features. .
One of Disney’s most majestic hotel lobbies, the entryway at the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a sight to behold. Enormous lotus-shaped canvas chandeliers hang from a vaulted thatched ceiling, where skylights flood the room with natural light. Tribal relics hang from the walls, and a giant suspension bridge connects the upper floors. Cozy seating areas are arranged around kilim rugs, and carved armoires display glass-encased artwork. At the far end of the room, a floor-to-ceiling window offers sweeping views of the savannas.
Animal Kingdom Lodge’s thematic elements are immediately impressive (perhaps some of Disney’s best), but some travelers may find the theme over-the-top or gimmicky (those that do will probably feel out of step with any properties on Disney grounds). However, sticklers for authenticity will be happy to know that Disney infuses the property with plenty of African cultural elements. Guests will find illustrated Fante proverbs in their rooms, South African pap and bobotie at the breakfast buffet, and a stunning Igbo Ijele at the center of the lobby. The Igbo Ijele is a 16-foot tall Nigerian tribal mask, and only one of 380 museum quality art pieces found throughout the hotel. In fact, the Animal Kingdom Lodge houses the largest collection of African art outside of the continent.
Obviously, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a family-friendly resort. Besides a large swimming pool and cool safari features, the hotel has a kids’ club, an arcade, and regularly scheduled kid-centric activities, like campfire s’mores making or African instrument lessons. But the hotel also appeals to adults -- especially animal lovers -- more than other Disney properties. Although there’s only one pool, while most Deluxe Resort Hotels have multiple, the one here is huge.
Where is Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Located in Orlando?
Across from animal kingdom, but at least a 10-minute drive from other disney attractions and 30-minute drive from orlando international airport. .
Built in 2001, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is actually Disney’s newest property. Because of this, the hotel is located farther from Disney attractions than most of the other resorts on the Disney compound. However, it’s just across the street from the Animal Kingdom Theme Park. AKL doesn’t offer monorail or water taxi service, so guests relying on Disney transportation will have to use the shuttle buses (the slowest Disney transportation method). Though Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios are all within a 10- to 14-minute drive, it can take much longer to reach these parks via bus. Blizzard Beach is a quick four-minute drive from the property, while Typhoon Lagoon and Disney Springs are farther afield, at 12 and 14 minutes, respectively. Downtown Disney is a 15-minute drive or roughly 30 minutes via shuttle bus. Outside of Disney, Sea World is a 16-minute drive, Universal Studios is a 17-minute drive, and Orlando International Airport is a 30-minute drive.
What are the Rooms and Their Views Like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?
Rooms have safari-themed decor, standard disney amenities, and furnished balconies – most with savanna views..
Like the lobby, guest rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge have an African safari theme. Intricate wooden headboards feature symbolic tribal carvings and mosquito nets mimic the bed coverings of Southern Africa’s tented camps. Ghanaian woven baskets hang on the walls, along with illustrated Fante proverbs and wrought-iron sconces. Flat-screen TVs are housed in clawfoot armoires, and additional amenities include mini-fridges and single-cup coffeemakers. Closets are stocked with ironing equipment and key-operated safes. Bathrooms feature the classic Disney layout -- sinks and vanities in one room, shower/tub combos and toilets in another -- and decor is impressive. Custom wallpaper here depicts some of Africa’s most important sights, like Mt. Kilimanjaro, Victoria Falls, and Ngorongoro Crater. Beige granite and double sinks are nice touches, and the provided toiletries are the standard Disney products. All of AKL’s rooms have furnished balconies, many of which overlook one of the property’s four savannas (though some have views of the parking lot).
The majority of rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge are Standard Rooms with one king or two queen-size beds, although families with young children can also request a room with one queen bed and one bunk bed. Standard Rooms are subdivided by their views. Standard View Rooms comprise the entry-level category, and overlook the parking lot. Pool View Rooms (you guessed it) overlook the pool, but do not have savanna views. Savanna View Rooms are the hotel’s most expensive and most popular option. From the Savanna View Rooms, guests can spot wildlife roaming the grounds at all hours. For some travelers, this is a priceless feature, for others it’s a pointless upgrade, considering the hotel has dozens of communal wildlife viewing decks across the property.
Like other hotels in Disney’s Deluxe category, Animal Kingdom Lodge has a private Club Level. The Club Level rooms offer access to a private lounge that serves continental breakfast, snacks, and drinks throughout the day. Club-level guests also receive personal check-in and concierge service, which can be a particularly nice perk, considering the hotel’s typically long front desk lines. Besides Standard Rooms, the Club Level also offers one- and two-bedroom suites.
What’s the Pool Like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?
The huge freeform pool has a waterslide, but it’s the only one on-site. .
Unlike other Deluxe Resort Hotels, Animal Kingdom Lodge only has one pool, Uzima Springs, but it’s huge. Guests can access the Samawati Springs pool at the neighboring Kidani Village (AKL’s separate villas property), but it’s a long walk from the hotel. Uzima Springs is an 11,000 square foot freeform pool with both zero-entry and traditional stepped entrances. The pool is surrounded by tons of lounge chairs, and always feels crowded. Kids typically dominate the pool scene, thanks to the 67-foot-long waterslide. There’s a tiny wading pool for toddlers, but AKL doesn’t have a kiddie splash zone like other Disney properties. Next to the pool there are several whirlpools, an outdoor playground, and an open-air bar that serves snacks and drinks throughout the day.
What Restaurants and Bars are Available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?
An excellent array of african food, along with typical american dishes and a lounge..
Dining at Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a brief introduction to African culinary traditions. Jiko, the hotel’s signature a la carte restaurant, skillfully infuses African flavors into familiar dishes. Guests can expect exotic ingredients like fenugreek, piri piri, cassava, and chermoula to be paired with the likes of roasted chicken, halibut, and filet mignon. Guests can also choose wines from an extensive South African wine list. At dinnertime, the restaurant’s wood-fired ovens fill the dining room with aromas of freshly baked bread and roasted meats. Dark woods and vibrant colors give Jiko a quintessential African feel. Reservations are strongly recommended. It’s nearly impossible to be accommodated as a walk-in, no matter the time of year.
Boma, the hotel’s buffet restaurant, is open for breakfast and dinner. Reservations are strongly recommended for dinner time. Reservations aren’t accepted for breakfast, but breakfast-goers will undoubtedly have to wait to be seated. During our visit, when we arrived for breakfast at the restaurant’s early opening time, there was already a line at the host stand. Boma’s buffet is a force to be reckoned with -- it’s huge and offers tons of food. American breakfast favorites like eggs, omelets, pancakes, and waffles sit alongside African specialties like pap, bobotie, and chakalaka. For dinner, the buffet introduces more African flavors with Ghanian oxtail stew, Nigerian fufu, Tunisian couscous, and South African geelrys.
The Mara, named for the river that flows through Kenya and Tanzania, is Animal Kingdom Lodge’s quick-service restaurant. The quick-service concept is incredibly popular across the Disney brand and is known for its varied options, tasty food, and unbelievable cleanliness. In the mornings, guests can swing by for coffee, bacon and eggs, and Mickey waffles, while lunch and dinner hours feature American favorites like burgers, grilled cheese, and flatbreads. It also sells snacks and desserts like chips, doughnuts, and ice cream bars. Both indoor and outdoor seating are on hand.
Victoria Falls Lounge is a few steps down from the lobby and overlooks Boma’s dining room. This is the property's only bar apart from the poolside one. The full bar menu covers sandwiches and appetizers, and serves a variety of specialty cocktails, African beers, and South African wines.
What Other Features are at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?
Tons of great amenities include four savannas with 30 species of wildlife..
Many guests choose to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge because of its unique setting in the middle of four diverse savannas. More than 30 species of African wildlife live on the property, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, and flamingos. The hotel has dozens of viewing areas across the grounds, many of which are staffed by in-house wildlife experts who can explain the animals’ behavioral patterns, eating habits, and idiosyncrasies. Guests can also book private safaris along the hotel’s grounds.
Animal Kingdom Lodge also has a handful of nice amenities, including a huge souvenir shop with Disney paraphernalia and sundries, a 24-hour self-service laundry room, and a signature Disney arcade-style game room. Wi-Fi and standard parking are free, and guests are entitled to Disney hotel benefits, like Extra Magic Hours and the Magical Express luggage transportation service. As mentioned, Animal Kingdom Lodge does not have monorail or water taxi service, only Disney shuttle busses.
Most Disney hotels do not have fitness centers. If they do, their gyms are typically small. Animal Kingdom Lodge falls into the latter category -- its gym is nicely equipped with modern cardio and weight-lifting machines, but the room is tiny for a resort of this size. AKL doesn’t have a full-service spa, but it has a massage center, where guests can book massages and facials.
What does Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Offer for Families?
An on-site kids' club and lots of family-centric activities keep families entertained..
Simba’s Clubhouse is the on-site kids' club where children ages 3 to 12 can participate in regularly scheduled activities throughout the course of the day. Kids can play with Disney toys, watch movies, create arts and crafts, and eat kid-friendly snacks. The kids’ club isn’t free, but parents dining at Boma or Jiko receive one free hour with a valid dinner receipt. Besides the kids' club, the hotel regularly hosts family-friendly activities across the property. Families can make s’mores on an outdoor fire pit, learn to play African instruments, or participate in group storytelling sessions.

The staff was awesome! The pools were so fun! We were looked after with affordable prices and surprised that even though we were close to Disney world and it was very busy, we were treated quite well! Yavonnie and others at the desk and pool were so helpful!!
by KathyC2083
I recently spent 3 nights here with several friends. We have nothing but positive things to say. The staff was polite and friendly. Our room was clean and always a pleasure to come back to at the end of the day. The pool was warm, clean and the entertainment was fun...including BINGO and a trivia game. The outdoor area was also a great place to spend time relaxing in the comfortable lounge chairs or just sitting by the fire pit. At night, the live music was great too. We would especially like to mention Adrianna (front desk), Mikey (27 Palms Grill) and Dornet (Zest Dining/Restaurant) who went above and beyond in making our stay one worth remembering!

RATED THE #1 OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IN LAKELAND, FLORIDA!
Our tour guide, was great! He was knowledgeable and funny. Awesome assortment of animals from antelope to zebra and many in between. We got to feed many of the animals which was interesting and fun. Great opportunity to take close up pictures of the animals. Our daughter also enjoyed feeding the lemurs. It's a fun way to spend a few hours!
The safari was exciting from the beginning to the end. We enjoyed feeding the camels the most. Seeing the ostrich and the huge eggs they lay was amazing. The cheetah was breathtaking. Although the water buffaloes were huge, they were quite gentle and easy to feed. Our tour guide Jan was very knowledgeable. I look forward to doing this again!
Our Safari ride was enjoyable and very informative. Our guide, Art, was extraordinarily knowledgeable about all of the animals we saw. My grand children and I really enjoyed being able to feed many of the animals. It was a wonderful experience and I am telling all of my friends that it is a wonderful place to take their grand children.
We loved this tour. Definitely a hidden gem in central Florida. J.J was friendly and knowledgeable and my 90 year-old father-in-law was able to sit comfortably in the shaded open-air vehicle and enjoy every aspect of the tour. If you're able, feed the Lemurs! It's an optional add-on activity but lots of fun. Would recommend this place to anyone!
JJ, our guide, was so knowledgeable about the animals. We were able to feed many treats to the animals as we travelled along on the open air (but covered) safari bus, which was great for interacting and viewing the animals. It was our favorite part of our vacation! Would definitely come here again. Lots of fun for people of all ages.

Top 5 Destinations for a Family Vacation in the USA
P lanning a family vacation in the United States can be exciting, but also overwhelming, with so many great destinations to choose from.
To help make your decision a little easier, here are five of the top family-friendly vacation spots across the country. Each offers its own unique activities, sights, cuisine, and culture that the whole family can enjoy.
Known for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant Polynesian culture, Hawaii is a top choice for many families looking to get away.
The island of Oahu offers the bustling city of Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach, while Maui boasts stunning cliffs and waterfalls.
Of course, no trip to Hawaii is complete without visiting one of the islands’ many volcanoes and stopping for a refreshing shaved ice treat.
There are plenty of resorts tailored specifically for families, as well as an endless array of outdoor adventures to choose from like snorkeling, surf lessons, submarine tours, and Hawaiian luau shows.
The weather is pleasant year-round, though peak seasons are more crowded. Be sure to keep an eye on cheap flights to Hawaii when planning your vacation.
2. Orlando, Florida
Home to some of the most iconic theme parks in the world, Orlando is synonymous with family fun.
Spend days immersed in the magical worlds of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, exploring thrilling rides, interactive shows, character interactions, and more.
Beyond the major theme parks, Orlando offers other exciting attractions like water parks, museums, zoos, and mini golf.
The city provides easy access to beautiful Florida beaches on both coasts for a day by the ocean. With so many family-oriented hotels and resorts, Orlando makes it easy to keep everyone entertained.
Try to visit in shoulder season when crowds are smaller.
3. Yellowstone National Park
For families who love the outdoors, Yellowstone National Park is an American treasure.
Located mostly in Wyoming, this iconic national park offers incredible natural wonders like the famous Old Faithful geyser, Mammoth Hot Springs, the immense Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and abundant wildlife spotting opportunities.
Visitors can enjoy ranger-led educational programs, hiking trails for all levels, fishing, horseback riding, and camping under the stars.
Yellowstone and the surrounding area also provide the chance to learn about Native American history and culture.
While the park is open year-round, summer is the most popular time to visit. Beat the crowds by planning a trip in spring or fall.
4. San Diego, California
With idyllic weather year-round, San Diego is a go-to family vacation spot. Major attractions like the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND, SeaWorld, and the USS Midway Museum provide plenty of kid-friendly things to see and do.
Families can also spend time on the expansive beaches, take a ferry to Coronado I sland, kayak through sea caves in La Jolla, explore the historic Gaslamp Quarter, and visit nearby wineries in Temecula.
The world-famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers unique up-close animal encounters. Popular family-oriented hotels with pools and playgrounds provide a home base for exploring this sunny coastal city.
5. Chicago, Illinois
From world-class museums and massive public parks to delectable deep-dish pizza, Chicago offers big-city adventure perfect for families.
Little ones will love the hands-on exhibits at the Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum of Natural History, and Shedd Aquarium (which also has an awesome dolphin show) .
Take in sweeping city views from the Skydeck of the iconic Willis Tower or while cruising down the Chicago River.
Catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, stroll through Millennium Park to see “The Bean” sculpture, and ride the famous Navy Pier Ferris wheel.
In addition to family-friendly hotels, Chicago also boasts kid-centric attractions like water parks and an indoor dino-themed mini golf course.
Deciding where to take the family on vacation can be difficult, but destinations like these offer exceptional experiences to please every member of the family.
From sunshine and beaches to national parks and big city sights, the United States is filled with diverse destinations perfect for making memories together.
