We’re not a zoo
- Port Lympne Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered animals and wherever possible we aim to send animals born here to protected areas of their natural habitat where they can live free – just as they should be.
- We always make sure that the animals come first, from enclosure design to diet, no expense is spared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and source our meat from trustworthy suppliers.
- We design our enclosures with the animals in mind, so there’s lots of natural foliage and furniture to provide shelter and camouflage.
- We never lock our animals into viewing areas, so, just like in the wild, it may take some time to spot certain animals.
- We do our best to provide a fantastic visitor experience, whilst not forgetting the primary reason we’re here – to ensure the survival of endangered animals.
TRIPADVISOR Wonderful Day Out An excellent place to visit - see the animals close up and enjoy excellent food at Baby Dolls restaurant. Friendly helpful staff everywhere around the huge park. The Safari ride is a must do. A great day out at a great price. Ken S. Written August 26, 2021
TRIPADVISOR Super Safari The reserve is large and offers a lovely day out. I highly recommend booking the safari as this was the best part of our visit. Amy Rogers. Written August 6, 2021
TRIPADVISOR An unbelievable experience We were all amazed at just how good this place is. We stayed in the hotel for two nights so got two full days in the park. Everything is so well organised and the safari drives are brilliant. You get to see so many animals close up. We have been to a South African safari and we saw more animals here than we did there. We were very luck with the weather which added to the experience. You have to give this place a try, you will love it and the kids will too. Gary F. Written October 6, 2020

All these animal and more are waiting for you! But if you’re torn about where to see them, here’s a guide! Welcome to The Dig For Kids! Today, we’re bringing you the top 10 safari parks in the UK!
Table of Contents
Longleat Safari Park
“Wind up your windows. Hide all the sandwiches. You’re going on a safari tour that’s wilder, furrier, and growlier than you ever dared imagine” is the iconic motto Longleat Safari Park goes by.
Located in the South West of England, this top-tier park is a memorable experience. An entire animal kingdom awaits you: a wolf pack, herds of rhinos, prowling cheetahs, territorial tigers, frolicking lions, a rescued circus elephant, and more!
Longleat Safari Park is most known for its famous Elizabethan house, an adventure castle, hedge maze, and of course– what all visitors rave about– a magnificent gorilla colony
https://www.longleat.co.uk/
Blair Drummond Safari Park
Home to more than 350 animals, most of them roaming freely, Blair Drummond Safari Park is an unforgettable attraction.
Here’s a sneak peek inside: lions, elephants, giraffes, meerkats are just a few of the majestic residents. Are you ready to take your chances with “the cheeky monkeys in the park’s famous Macque Drive-thru, walk with free roaming lemurs in Lemur Land, catch the popular sea lion and bird of prey shows, and take a boat ride to Chimp Island,” as the park advertises?
Since this safari opened its doors in 1970, it’s been one of the top parks in the UK as it takes visitors through a picturesque look at thriving wildlife populations. Lions, lemurs, and chimps aren’t the only animals here. Antelopes, camels, zebras, rhinos, and more will happily greet you.
Port Lympne Wild Animal Park
Ready to safely come face to face with one of Africa’s ferocious “big five?” Then look no further than Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Lympne in Hythe. Here, more than 700 animals, over 90 species are thriving across 600 giant acres.
You’ll find the single largest herd of black rhinos, which are critically endangered species. Kent’s only giraffe lives here as well. But if you have your eyes out on a larger adventure, then the Dinosaur Forest may catch your attention. It will feel like you’re strolling through Jurassic Park.
https://www.aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne/
Knowsley Safari Park
UK’s longest safari drive is right here at Knowsley Safari Park, clocking in at a whopping five miles stretch.
What are some to die for attractions here? The stars of the park live in the Amur Tiger Trail– two tigers by the names of Bira and Sinda. However, there is no shortage of things to see. Knowsley Safari Park stands out by its plethora of peculiar animals such as ratites, bats, and rodents.
There is also an incredibly magnificent wet safari on the park’s boating lake, which will take you rowing and allow you to see all the amazing species that call Knowsley Safari Park their home. As you explore, you’ll see everything from cheeky meerkats, formidable buffaloes, graceful wildebeest and zebra, to the majestic lion pride. If you’re lucky enough that your trip coincides with the school holidays, the park offers a Baboon Bus.
www.knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk
Woburn Safari Park
Want to step out of the car and the “Baboon Bus” as the previous park offered? At Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire, your adventure is on foot. And you can do more than walking on the wild side of nature, you can ride the “Great Woburn Railway” or take a ride in one of their swan boats.
It will feel like you have left the UK and stepped into the Savannah Grasslands. Visit the African Forest, the Northern Plains, the Kingdom of the Carnivores, and the Giraffe Junction to observe monkeys, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, bison, and lions in their natural habitat. On foot, you can witness first hand the magnificence and the grandeur of giant elephants walking in front of you, as well as walk among deers, wave back to meerkats, and feed the sea lions.
Right from the comfort of your car, start by viewing bison and zebras grazing at the Northern Plains, then drive to the Savannah Grasslands and see rhinos living the good life, head to the African Forest to laugh at the antics of the energetic monkeys who are known to be mischievous in the woodlands, and finally, see tigers prowl in the Kingdom of the Carnivores.

Cotswold Wildlife Park
We have one word for you…ostriches!
At Cotswold Wildlife Park, located in Oxfordshire, you’ll get a front row to see ostriches roaming freely, but that’s not all you should focus on. Every day, the park hosts penguin talks. And every month, you’ll find plenty of monthly events. Offering no shortage of activities, the park offers annual competitions.
Dive deep enough in the park and you’ll find their mischievous lion pride, lazing around in the sun. Just like your average cat, only a lot bigger and more ferocious.
Knepp Wildland Safari
Spread out across an impressive 3,500 acres of Sussex, Knepp Wildland Safari, one of the largest rewilding projects in lowland Europe is one unforgettable experience.
Herds of animals, birds, mammals, butterflies, reptiles, and beetles, and even entire gardens of plants and fungi await. Whether you’re there to take courses on photography, looking to check out the animals, want to do some tree reading, or to take a boat that will take you on a scenic ride
https://www.kneppsafaris.co.uk/
Wingham Wildlife Park
Wingham Wildlife Park offers anything from raccoons to dinosaurs, and it’s right here in the UK for all to see. What can you expect to see? A long way from its opening in 1986 when the park just had a small collection of aviary birds, waterfowl, and a tea room, today, there are hundreds of species roaming around.
Now, you’ll find a big cat row, where the likes of pumas, jaguars, cheetahs, caracals, and unique, smaller species of cat such as Scottish wildcats roam. Here for the tigers? You’ll find them a little deeper in the tiger enclosure.
When you have your fill of watching majestic cats, head to the wolf enclosure, or is the Chimp House more your taste? Other attractions include the Reptile House where you can view the likes of rhinoceros iguanas or check out the Penguin Pool, which speaks for itself.
Animals aren’t the only guests here after hours– you can be too! Wingham offers a unique experience where you can be a keeper for a day. There are VIP tours where keepers walk you through the park and take you through each animal’s history, arrival, and relationships.

In 1984, Shepreth Wildlife Park opened its doors as a much needed refuge for injured and orphaned animals. Now, there are more than 100 species thriving there. From alpacas to lemurs, Shepreth Wildlife Park has them!
The natural grounds offer warm tropical exhibits, animal encounter sessions, outdoor play zones, demonstrations, and keeper talks. Throughout the day, you won’t be able to go through the large number of talks the park offers, each focusing on a different animal. Throughout the month, keep up with their superb events such as hedgehog day. And if you’re looking to take something home from the park, stop by the gift shop or talk to one of the keepers about the animals available for adoption!

The UK’s Best Safari Parks
Knowsley safari park – best safari in england.
This is our local safari park. Knowsley Safari Park located in Merseyside offers the longest safari drive in the UK, covering over 550 acres of land. Visitors can enjoy up-close experiences with African lions, white rhinos, and bison from the comfort of their own cars. For those who are hesitant about driving through the baboon enclosure, the baboon bus offers a safe alternative. On the foot safari, guests can see a range of animals, including Amur tigers, giraffes, meerkats, bush dogs, birds of prey, sea lions, and tapirs. The park also offers daily animal talks and shows.
Knowsley Safari Park has a dedicated conservation team that works on educating visitors and the wider public about their critical projects. The team also actively works with endangered species, such as monitoring and anti-poaching activities, and fixing fences to reduce human conflict in their natural habitats. By visiting Knowsley Safari Park, guests can support these important conservation efforts.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park – Safari Parks in the UK
West Midland Safari & Leisure Park safari park offers an unforgettable experience that can be enjoyed as a day trip or a longer getaway. While the luxurious safari lodges provide an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with animals such as tigers, rhinos and elephants, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy too, including a drive-through safari and village walk .
Whether you opt to drive your own car or join a guided minibus tour, the safari drive will take you on a thrilling journey through habitats filled with African lions, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, cheetahs, and antelopes. The safari park is split into two different parts, a safari area and a walk around zoo type area which also includes theme park rides. We began our day in the walk-through part of the safari. Longleat Safari Park – UK Best Safari Park?
Longleat Safari Park , nestled in the picturesque Wiltshire countryside, is an ideal destination for a family-friendly day out. As you stroll through the main park, you’ll come across various enclosures housing an array of creatures, from creepy crawlies to wild cats and primates.
At specific times during the day, you can board a jungle cruise and venture out onto the vast lake on the estate. If you’re fortunate enough, you might catch a glimpse of hippos in the shallow waters or the silverback lowland gorilla and his family residing on the island in the center. Keep your eyes peeled! Additionally, the boat ride provides an opportunity to feed the resident sea lions, who swim and frolic beside the vessel, hoping to snag a fish.
Naturally, the highlight of your visit to Longleat is the self-drive safari. The Wiltshire plains are home to three of the big five: lions, rhinos, and Anne the elephant, as well as cheetahs, wolves, tigers, and deer. Provided you drive responsibly and keep your windows closed, the animals are familiar with vehicles and can offer some extraordinary encounters.
Longleat also offers additional experiences
Such as giraffe feeding, a lemur walkthrough, and monkey mayhem. Also during the latter, the rhesus macaques have free reign to clamber all over your vehicle and take whatever piques their interest! You may opt to ride the safari bus for this reason.
Longleat Safari Park is dedicated to conservation efforts on a global scale. Whether it’s breeding programs aimed at restoring the populations of wild dogs and black rhinos in Tanzania or supporting the conservation work of the Red Panda Network in Nepal, Longleat depends on contributions and purchases from its guests to aid in these vital endeavors. When you visit Longleat, you’ll be making a significant contribution towards these efforts.

Port Lympne – Best Safari Parks in the UK
One of the most impressive safari parks in the UK is Port Lympne, situated in Kent . This game reserve offers the nearest experience to Africa in the UK, complete with safari drives and a range of lodge-style accommodations for an ultimate overnight stay.
On foot, you can explore various enclosures within the main park that are home to magnificent animals like lynxes, gorillas, and brown bears. While larger pens house lions, tigers, and cheetahs. You can also plan your visit alongside the ranger talk schedule for a chance to learn more about these incredible creatures and have any queries addressed!
Similar to Longleat, the park features vast open plains where giraffes, zebras, and antelopes reside. However, the only way to observe them is by joining a tour led by a knowledgeable guide who will take you and a group of others out into the wilderness on a safari canter. You’ll have the good fortune of seeing these animals in their natural habitats (or as close to it as possible in the Kent countryside), as well as rhinos, elephants, wild dogs, and other uncommon species fenced in.
What makes this place really special is the Aspinall Foundation’s link to conservation efforts in Africa and beyond. Thus Port Lympne has a hugely successful breeding programme that has returned various animals to the wild, including five eastern black rhinos, two cheetahs and over 60 gorillas. At each enclosure, you’ll be able to read whether the animals inside are candidates for reintroduction, and there are dedicated teams at the park who will be more than willing to tell you more when you visit.
You can also stay at Rhino Lodge, Port Lympne animal reserve .

Similar to other safari parks in the UK, your adventure may begin with a drive-through safari, allowing you to explore different regions of the world from the comfort of your own car. Here, you can see rare horses, bison, wildebeest, camels, southern white rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, monkeys and zebras.
The Kingdom of the Carnivores is a must-visit area at Woburn Safari Park, where you can catch a glimpse of Amur tigers, timberwolves, black bears, and lions, each residing in their spacious enclosures. The self-drive safari loop takes around 60 minutes to complete, and the adventure doesn’t end there. You can explore the foot safari and spot smaller animals such as parrots, meerkats, wallabies, otters, lemurs, sea lions, penguins, squirrel monkeys, red pandas, and many more.
When you purchase a ticket to Woburn Safari Park, you’re supporting the team’s efforts to sustain the animal population on-site, as well as their involvement in critical conservation work around the world. The park supports various projects, including the International Elephant Foundation, the Wildcats Conservation Alliance, and Helping Rhinos. By visiting the park, you’re contributing to these worthy causes.

Zoos, wildlife and safari parks
After taking in the wealth of city sights, enjoy a touch of life on the farm. City farms offer an oasis of calm in an urban environment. Children are encouraged to say hello to pigs, cows and honking geese. The adults can enjoy an organic ice-cream while the kids are distracted. If domesticated animals are too tame there are always the zoos in England which provide a safe haven for some of the world's rarest beasts. Or experience the joy of having your car jumped on by inquisitive monkeys while on a tour in one of the safari parks in England. Attractions are preparing to reopen following the COVID-19 lockdown, please check with the attraction's website for up-to-date information on opening times and restrictions before travelling.

From laurence, uk, travelled with us during august 2018, from ana & alan, germany, travelled with us during august 2018, from alison, ireland, travelled with us during august 2018.
Hi Corlie, the trip far exceeded our expectations. Simon was fantastic. We loved everything about the trip and have nothing to offer as improvements. We would do this trip again in a second. Thanks.
Dear Clare, We have just got back from South Africa. The Wild Wings safari was as before wonderful. Simon was on top form and John doing the meals was a new innovation for us and very enjoyable. We had a great time with nice travelling companions, We saw animals not seen before (Wild Dogs) and lots of birds. My wife and I just wish we were a bit younger! Thanks to everyone, including yourself, for giving us such a rewarding experience. Best wishes.
Dear Madi, We are back in Germany after our wonderful holiday in South Africa and just to give you a few details as to how well everything went and how superbly Wild Wings organized everything for us. We were met fine on arrival at Tambo and found Africa Sky Guest House to be perfect for us, everything that we wanted on our 1st night in South Africa. We were collected as arranged for our tour of Joburg and Soweto, etc. Our guide Martin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we learned a lot from him about the history of the area. Too many places to mention, we visited the constitutional court, Soweto of course, the city centre, Mandela’s house, the Hector Peterson monument, etc. All very interesting.
After our night in Africa Sky which I cannot praise too much, the dinner in the evening was excellent, we were picked up by Simon for our drive to Kruger. This is a very special man. With 2 other couples he looked after us at Skukuza camp and then from there to Satara there was just the 2 of us. His enthusiasm is boundless and his cooking was great, we were very pleased that we could dine with him during our time at Satara. His knowledge of the animals and birds of Kruger is extensive. We saw everything we wanted including leopards on numerous occasions, 2 close sightings of cheetahs, and of course elephant, lions, rhinos, hyena, jackal, crocodile, impala, giraffe, hippos, buffalo, kudu, nyala, lots of small mammals and too many birds to mention. We did a very interesting bush walk at Skukuza and also did a night drive seeing a wild cat, a genet, a python and a puff adder, all very interesting. We were quite astounded at the numbers of animals it was possible to see.
From Satara we went to Bateleur Camp in Timbavati where we could immediately see the difference between Kruger and a private game reserve. Bateleur is a very special camp, it suited us perfectly, run by Sophie and Brad who we really must thank for looking after us and being so enthusiastic, including the armed escorts to and from our accommodation. Our thanks also to Temba, our tracker, who could see animals where nobody else could. They have wonderful staff there who all contributed to us having a great time. On our morning and evening safari drives we again saw a multitude of animals, we really had a great time.
We must compliment Wild Wings on the organisation of our trip, everything was easy-going but efficient, everything went perfectly. For our 1st visit to SA and Kruger your ideas and recommendations were perfect. Again we must thank Simon for looking after us in Kruger and Sophie and Brad for the great time we had in Timbavati.
We are sure we will return to SA in the future and will be in touch with you for the next trip as our plans take shape. Many thanks for everything.
Hi Madi, Just a short note to say thank you so much for organising our safari, from start to finish we had the most amazing time!
We were lucky enough to have our guide Nicky and the open vehicle all to ourselves which made our honeymoon even more special.
We managed to see the Big 5 twice and then some. Nicky was a wonderful guide who did everything in her power to provide us with the most wonderful sights, her knowledge of the area and the animals were so interesting, we learned a lot from her. The accommodation at Lower Sabie was just perfect, and the food cooked and provided by Nicky was fantastic.
The only problem with our safari was that it was too short and we wished we could have stayed longer!!!!
Thank you so much again, you were fantastic to deal with. I will highly recommend Wild Wings to all our family and friends. Please pass on our thanks to Nicky!

Safari holidays
Incredible safari holidays with kuoni.
No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .
The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.
We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.
We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.
Whether it’s your first trip to Africa or you just can’t stop going back, talk to us and we can help create the perfect tailor-made safari for you.

15 of the best safaris in South Africa
You can’t come to south africa and not head into the bush. here’s our pick of the best safaris to get you started.
S outh Africa has a large, long-established safari industry and, as a result, the choice of where to stay can feel overwhelming. The good news is that there are a lot of great options. From some of the finest luxury lodges on the continent to simple bush camps and walking trips with more of a connection to the environment, these are some of the best safaris in South Africa .

1. Pafuri Walking Safaris, Kruger National Park
Getting back to basics, Pafuri Walking Safaris are based in the northern Kruger, which has a different environment to the southern park, what with its huge baobab trees and large fever tree forest. The big game isn’t as dense up here, but there’s a fraction of the tourists you’ll encounter further south. The walking safaris are at least two nights in length and involve camping in the bush (you’ll still have proper beds, so this is far from roughing it). This is a truly thrilling safari experience led by expert guides, operating in the dry months of April to October.
Price ££ Family-friendly N Big five lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
2. Samara Karoo, Samara Karoo Private Reserve
In the Great Karoo semi-desert, Samara offers a different kind of safari from the Kruger bush. The striking semi-arid landscape is rippled with flat-topped mountains on which the team sometimes set up alfresco lunches. Previously used as farmland, the reserve has recently been rewilded with the big five and is a conservation area for cheetahs, who are so relaxed you can approach them on foot. During winter (June to September), this is one of the few places where it’s relatively easy to see aardvark (“earth pig” in Afrikaans), because it’s cool enough for them to be out during the day.

Price ££ Family-friendly Y Big five lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
3. Singita Lebombo, Kruger National Park
Singita is arguably the best luxury safari company on the continent, so it would be remiss not to mention at least one of its South African lodges. Lebombo is in Kruger National Park and has a contemporary style that doesn’t detract from its spectacular setting, overlooking the N’wanetsi River. You’re pretty much guaranteed to see the big five — and much more — as well as enjoying excellent food (think fine-dining dinners) and top South African wine. Lebombo is also home to a cooking school for people who live around Kruger; guests can book a cooking class to support the project.
Price £££ Family-friendly Y Big five lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
4. Camp Figtree, Addo Elephant National Park
Camp Figtree is an affordable lodge just outside Addo Elephant National Park — a safari that fits snugly onto the end of a Garden Route road trip from Cape Town to Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). As the name suggests, Addo is famous for its elephants, but a recent reintroduction of lions gave it the full big five certification. Game drives are an extra charge (as reflected in the cheaper room rate; most high-end safaris are all-inclusive) and other activities include bush walks with giraffes and horse riding. Addo is also malaria-free.
Price £ Family-friendly Y Big five lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
5. Royal Malewane, Thornybush Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger
Another one of South Africa’s best and most elegantly designed luxury lodges, Royal Malewane is in the private Thornybush reserve on the edge of Kruger National Park, with two lodges — the main lodge with eight suites and the Africa House villa; the other, the Farmstead, with three suites and the Farmhouse villa. The two villas are ideal for those, such as larger families or groups, who want a bit more privacy. And being in this area of the Kruger means exceptional wildlife viewing — not just the big five, but hundreds of species of bird. Photography enthusiasts (no need for a fancy lens, you can hire gear from the lodge) can book a specialist photographic safari to get the best shots of your trip.
6. Motswiri Private Safari Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve
Madikwe is an excellent option for families. It’s malaria-free, has great game (big five, cheetah and more than 350 bird species) and the drive from Johannesburg airport in Gauteng is about four hours, so it’s not necessary to fork out on expensive light-aircraft flights. There are a bunch of options for different budgets, but Motswiri is a good mid-range lodge with five thatched-roof suites and a family villa all tucked among leadwood trees. Drinks aren’t included, but everything else is.
7. Lion Sands, Greater Kruger
There are four lodges and two villas in the Lion Sands reverse next to the Kruger — it’s the only private reserve with access to the perennial Sabie River, which attracts game all year round. The luxurious Ivory Lodge has private plunge pools in each of its eight suites, while the two villas are ideal for families. But the aces up Lion Sands’ sleeve are its three beautiful treehouses — after a picnic dinner and sundowners, retire to your four-poster bed on a lantern-lit platform for a night under the stars.
8. Muluwa Lodge, White River
A cheaper option for those on a budget, Muluwa Lodge is about 30 miles outside Kruger National Park and a four-hour drive from Johannesburg via the scenic Panorama Route, which includes Blyde River Canyon. Muluwa is based in the Likweti Estate, which is home to animals such as impalas, kudus, giraffes and zebras. As there are no predators, you can cycle, walk or run the trails around the lodge. To spot the famous big five, it’s easy to do Kruger day trips, leaving early in a 4×4 open-sided safari vehicle with a guide (self-driving is also possible) and returning in time for dinner.
Price £ Family-friendly Y Big five (in nearby Kruger) lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
9. Bonamanzi Game Park Camp, Hluhluwe
A 30-minute drive from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, Bonamanzi has an array of accommodation from chalets to tents — the campsite also has access to the lodge’s pool, bar, restaurant and kitchen facilities. Although many people stay here to access Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, which has the big five, the Bonamanzi Game Park itself is home to leopards, buffalos, rhinos and elephants, plus a rich array of birdlife. Guests can also take part in conservation activities, such as a rhino dehorning (to deter poachers), setting up camera traps, or fitting tracking collars to leopards.
Price £ Family-friendly Y Big five (in nearby Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve) lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant
10. Becks Safari Lodge, Karongwe Game Reserve
Five-star Becks Safari Lodge is in the private Karongwe Game Reserve. It’s less than an hour’s drive from the Kruger National Park, but there’s no need to visit if spotting big game is the aim — Karongwe is home to the big five and other wildlife including hyenas and giraffes. And, being a private reserve, it doesn’t suffer from the Kruger’s high-season crowds. Birders can spot some of the 365 bird species and there’s also a chance to see cheetahs on foot. The ten tented suites are set around the banks of the Makhutswi River, all with private decks, and there’s a communal 20m pool and a spa. Although it’s family-friendly, the lodge does have a 12-plus age limit.
11. Guernsey Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger
With several lodges and camping facilities, Guernsey Private Game Reserve is just outside Hoedspruit — one of Kruger National Park’s hub towns — and close to Kruger’s Orpen gate. An early start avoids the morning traffic heading into the Kruger and allows you to spend a full day in the park, either guided in an open-sided 4×4 or self-driving, spotting lions and elephants, before returning for the evening. Within Guernsey, you can take sunrise bush walks to learn about the ecosystem on a more intimate level — a relaxing activity to slot in before checkout.
12. Tswalu Kalahari, Tswalu Kalahari Private Reserve
South Africa’s largest private reserve is in the arid far north. The resort has just a nine-suite lodge and a private house in a reserve of more than 100,000 hectares, so guests virtually have the rolling rust-coloured dunes and plains of the Kalahari semi-desert to themselves. Owing to the reserve’s size, you may have to work a bit for the sightings — but a morning spent tracking black-maned Kalahari lions is all part of the fun. Hang with habituated meerkats, horse ride across the plains, spot black rhino, follow wild dogs on a hunt and top it off with a tasting menu at Klein Jan, a collaboration with the chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, who has Michelin-starred restaurant experience.
Price £££ Family-friendly Y Big five lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino
13. andBeyond Phinda, Phinda Private Game Reserve
In northern KwaZulu-Natal, andBeyond Phinda has six lodges, including the exclusive Phinda Homestead and Phinda Mountain Lodge, with its views of the reserve’s rolling green hills. Phinda is known for its conservation activities, some of which guests can be involved in — such as joining the team on their regular health checks of the pangolins that have been reintroduced in the reserve, many rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. As well as twice-daily game drives, you can take a diving or snorkelling day trip — Phinda is next to Sodwana Bay, one of the best diving spots in the country.
andbeyond.com
14. Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger
Sabi Sabi has four lodges, from the contemporary Earth Lodge to the classic, family-friendly Bush Lodge with its EleFun Centre, where children are entertained with environment-themed activities while parents take a break at the spa or around the swimming pool. This part of the Kruger is known as one of the best places in the world to see leopards — they’re so habituated they’ll often walk right up to your vehicle. It’s common to see the full big five in 24 hours, which makes the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve a great place for a first safari.
sabisabi.com
15. Morukuru Family Lodges, Madikwe Game Reserve
Another top Madikwe property, Morukuru has three stylish private houses in the malaria-free reserve, each with its own team of staff — these are perfect choices for families, groups or couples who just want a bit of extra space and privacy. River House and the Owner’s House can be combined for a bigger group. As a family-focused brand, there are plenty of activities for children, such as guided walks and spoor tracking — “spoor” is any evidence that an animal has passed through, from tracks to scat, scents to feathers. Plus there’s pizza-making, board games and plenty of game drives to explore the big five reserve.

Getting around
The Kruger National Park is approx a 5-6 hour drive from Johannesburg. The area is quite vast but depending on which lodge you stay in we recommend flying into either Skukuza or Hoedspruit airports where you can drive or be transferred to your lodge.
Highlights of Kruger National Park and surrounds
Everybody should go on a safari at least once in their life, and where better than South Africa's world-famous Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape, rich in wildlife and home to the Big Five.
One of Africa’s biggest game reserves, Kruger is home not only to the Big Five (FYI, that’s lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos), but hundreds of other mammals and birds, too. For wildlife, Kruger National Park is pretty much unparallelled. Not only that, rolling savannah and distant mountains make for the safari setting of dreams.
Want to experience safari without skimping on luxury? You’re in luck. Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape is famous not only for its vast and diverse variety of flora and fauna, but also for its luxury safari lodges, so you get the best of both worlds.
Here’s how to make the most out of your Kruger safari trip:
Kruger safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around the National Park by sunset or sunrise. Spot the Big Five before the rest of the world wakes up, as well as cheetahs, wild dogs, antelopes, honey-badgers, bush babies and up to 350 bird species.
For a different safari experience altogether, how about walking Kruger safari tours with expert field guides and trackers? There’s nothing quite like it for feeling close to the action and at one with the wildlife.
If you’re feeling fancy, take a helicopter flight across the bushveld and over the Blyde River Canyon. The views will take your breath away, and the ride itself is a thrill. You might even be lucky enough to spot a herd of elephants from way up in the sky, where you’ll be able to watch the magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Enjoy phenomenal stargazing – some of the best in South Africa – from Jock Safari Lodge , where you can even choose to sleep out on your riverside sala for the best outdoorsy experience.
Planning on taking the kids? They’re in for a treat! Drop them off at Ulusaba Rock Lodges's ‘Cub’s Club’ for mini rangers’ courses, safari goodies and activities which will inspire even the most apprehensive of little ones. Kruger National Park holidays are truly the best for individuals and groups of all kinds, including families of all sizes and ages.
Many of the lodges celebrate the local Shangaan culture with traditional singing and dancing after dinner or around the BOMA by night, a beautiful and harmonious treat for everyone.
Often when you think of safari holidays, you think of basic lodges and tents. But that’s not how we do safaris at Virgin Holidays, oh no! We’re all about treating you to a bit of luxury, no matter your destination.
Safaris in the Kruger Park safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around one of the lodge’s private concessions. Choose a lodge in the Sabi Sands reserve and you will be able to skip the crowds and search for wildlife in your very own piece of paradise, with less vehicles and the ability to do night-drives, you really will feel spoilt. Book the exclusive Cliff Lodge at Ulusaba for jaw-dropping views and a private pool, as well as world-class service, or sleep under the stars in the oh-so-exclusive Chalkley’s Treehouse at Lion Sands . Kick back with a cocktail at the Motswari Private Game Reserve , which looks onto a watering hole, and watch animals come and go as you sip.
Special occasion? Celebrate your honeymoon with romantic private dining under the African skies and enjoy a hot stone massage using Africology products at the Aroma Boma Spa, Ulusaba.
Sounds just a little bit better than you were expecting, hey?
Foodies, rejoice: you’ll get to taste some delicious local food as part of your Kruger safari packages:
- After an early start spotting the Big Five, a post-safari breakfast will be extremely welcome. How does poaches eggs on a Boerewors patty, a specialist sausage, sound? Thought so.
- Lunch is served followed by high tea before afternoon game-drive then it is time for the best bit, sundowners. Enjoy stretching your legs in the park where your ranger will select a gorgeous spot for you to enjoy some traditional South African snacks with a cool cocktail or some fine local wine.
- Feast on Kudu burgers from a Braai , a traditional African BBQ – super succulent and so tasty you’ll want seconds, and maybe thirds. Even better, enjoy your dinner around the BOMA, with breathtaking views across the plains – the perfect sunset dining experience.
- As for drink, South Africa is, of course, famous for its vineyards, which means one thing and one thing only: wine. And good wine, at that. Try Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and other new world wines from local vineyards. What a way to wind down at the lodge after a day of wildlife-spotting!
It’s high time you booked yourself and your family or loved ones onto that safari trip you’ve been talking about for years, huh?
Let’s get this show on the road: browse our Kruger National Park hotels and lodges right now, this minute, and you’ll soon be hanging out with (okay, near) lions in the African bush.

"Superb stay and exceptional service from Simu. We booked accommodation at Grace inn guest house (KZN) through Safari.com and we were assisted Yvonne. I would like to pass my sincere gratitude to Simu for her kindness. You made our stay really enjoyable. You and you your husband were always there to help with any issues we had. Thank you so much for your generosity. Looking forward to seeing you on 26th December 2021."

"I contacted Safari.com to organize our trip to South Africa. Samantha got in touch and from that moment on every of my needs was taken care of. She was so helpful and understood perfectly well our ideas! We got a tailer made trip which was exactly what we wanted! Our holiday worked out just perfect, and we have taken home great memories from our stay in South Africa! Thanks to Samantha , she was just great!!!"
Linda LeQuesne
"Nicky worked with us until we were completely satisfied with our itinerary. She was professional and friendly, and always replied within 24 hours. Her suggestions were brilliant and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Setari Camp in Botswana and Hoyo Hoyo Safari Camp in Kruger Park. I would highly recommend safari.com if you are planning a trip to Africa!"
Janusz Sarosiek
"Perfectly oganized safari. All precise and punctual. The lodges and program of excursions adjusted to our requirements and physical possibilities. Excellent contact with Tarryn Smith who was our guardian angel, and who had unlimited patience to hear our requests and changes of plans. The most amazing and beautiful Safari we’d ever had. Thank you Tarryn and Safari.com."
"I was lucky enough to spend an amazing 2 nights at Sanbona Gondwana Family Lodge. I had such a stunning trip with some incredible sightings but the highlight would have to be tracking a male cheetah on foot. I've been lucky enough to spend years in the bush but that was one of the greatest sightings of my life. It was also amazing to experience a more desert style safari trip with amazing terrain and different sightings. I would travel with safari.com again in a heartbeat. Thank you!"
Jasmeen Ghai
"I contacted safari.com along with lot of other tour companies and what stood out was their exceptional personalised services. Samantha interacted like a Friend and helped me plan my entire itinerary. She took into consideration my requirements (considering we were traveling with a 6 yo and wanted kids friendly places and activities), made recommendations & eventually helped to book the kariega private game reserve, which we thoroughly enjoyed! Would definitely recommend safari.com to anyone who’s looking to plan their South African holiday!"

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day
- I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
- I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
- Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money.
The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.
According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.
But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.
I saved by buying an annual pass
The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.
The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.
Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.
Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.
We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps
One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.
We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.
Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.
Related stories
Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.
My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.
Cooking our own food saved us money …
We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.
Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.
The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.
But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.
… and so did doing a self-driving safari
If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.
We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.
Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.
On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).
Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy
We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.
This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.

Two critically endangered lemurs born at Scottish safari park
The twin girls, named nova and evie, are the third litter to be born at the park..
A Scottish safari park has announced the birth of two female lemur pups native to Madagascar.
Nova and Evie, who are living at Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, were born on April 14 – and the park has now announced their birth publicly.
The six-week-old black-and-white ruffled lemurs are among as few as 1,000 remaining in the wild, with the species considered critically endangered.
They are known to have the second-loudest primate call in the animal kingdom, with howler monkeys being the only louder species.
Former deputy prime minister warns election campaign will be ‘dishonest’
Mick really is King of the Castle
Their loud cry makes them more susceptible to capture for the illegal pet trade, and additional threats include hunting by locals and habitat destruction due to deforestation, logging and mining.
Blair Drummond participates in the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme in order to build the population of animals such as the lemurs.
The sisters are the third litter to be born at the park, with several of their siblings now dotted around zoological establishments across the UK.
The park also collaborates with conservation project Feedback Madagascar, which focuses on educating communities and protecting lemurs in their natural habitat.
Eventually, the pups will join the other lemurs at the park’s Lemur Land.
In the meantime, visitors can catch a glimpse of them in their indoor enclosure with their mother, Cali.
The twin sisters will eventually be rehomed as part of the breeding programme.
Keeper Lesley Rodger said: “We are overjoyed to welcome these two new arrivals to our lemur conspiracy.
“They are gaining confidence in their surroundings daily and are already testing their limb strength by hanging from branches in their aviary.
“Both pups are female and based on our past experience, girls do tend to be more of a handful.
“We have named them Nova, meaning ‘new’ and Evie meaning ‘life’.”

Lizzo has shared her thoughts on the most recent South Park episode naming a drug after her.
The latest special, titled The End of Obesity , was released this weekend and parodies the use of weight loss drugs such as Ozempic by celebrities.
In one scene, Eric Cartman is in his doctor’s office, trying to get Ozempic in order to lose weight, however he can’t afford it and his health insurance won’t cover it.
Instead, his doctor writes him a prescription for ‘Lizzo’.
‘She’s a really good singer who talks about body positivity , and just being happy with the way you look,’ he explains.
‘I want you to listen to Lizzo five times a day and watch her videos just before bedtime.
https://www.instagram.com/p/C7aVrTeP94d/?hl=en
‘I’m afraid you’ll have to be on Lizzo for the rest of your life.’
An angry Cartman later noted: ‘Rich people get Ozempic, poor people get body positivity!’
Soon after the episode aired, the 36-year-old singer posted a video reacting to the episode, specifically a scene advertising the product.
‘Guys my worst fear has been actualised. I’ve been referenced in a South Park episode. I’m so scared. I’m going to blind react to it now,’ she began.
The fake ad pushing the Lizzo drug explained how it ‘makes you feel good about your weight and costs 90% less than Ozempic’, with one customer claiming they had ‘lowered my standards and my expectations’.
As the ad played out, the singers face dropped and she looked shell-shocked as other testimonials were shared.
The ad then said that 70% of Lizzo users ‘no longer cared about their weight’ and were able to ‘eat what they want with minimal physical activity’, but did face constipation as a side effect.
After it wrapped up, Lizzo weighed in.
‘That’s crazy. I just feel like damn, I am really that b****. I really showed the world how to love yourself and not give a f***, to the point where these men in Colorado know who the f*** I am and put it on their cartoon that has been around for 25 years,’ she said.
‘I’m really that b**** and I show y’all how to really not give a f*** and I will keep showing you [how to do the same].’
Despite the intended use of injectable weight loss drugs like Ozempic being for managing blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes, in recent years they’ve been used by people trying to lose weight.
Many celebrities, including Sharon Osbourne, Rebel Wilson, Amy Schumer, and Oprah Winfrey have admitted to using semaglutide GLP-1s to aid in their body transformations.
Last month, Barbra Stresiand was slammed for publicly asking Melissa McCarthy if she had also taken Ozempic.
After immense backlash from people who deemed her comment inappropriate, she posted: ‘‘She looked fantastic! I just wanted to pay her a compliment. I forgot the world is reading!’

The singer-songwriter took the stage in Birmingham, England Sunday ... just one day after being detained while leaving Amsterdam and having to cancel her show in Manchester -- and, she touched on the moment briefly during her show.
Check out the clip ... NM calls out all the trolls on the internet who were laughing at her for about five or six hours -- the amount of time she says she was detained -- before adding, "Guess who's still winning, bitch!!!"
At this, the Barbz go nuts ... screaming and shouting their love for the star who's had a whirlwind 24 hours.
ICYMI ... Nicki live streamed a confrontation with police where she was detained, and one of them claims she was under arrest -- including the moment she stepped into a police vehicle to be taken to a local police precinct.
While police wouldn't say specifically if they took Minaj in custody ... they did admit they had a 41-year-old American woman -- who they released after issuing a small fine.
Nicki seems less pissed about the incident and more concerned with the clowns online -- though that doesn't mean she plans on taking this one on the chin.
