SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA TO UYUNI - 3 DAY SALAR DE UYUNI TOUR

SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA TO UYUNI - 3 DAY SALAR DE UYUNI TOUR

ITINERARY (DRY & RAINY SEASON)

Day 1 - eduardo avaroa reserve.

Welcome to Bolivia!

We leave San Pedro de Atacama early this morning for a short and scenic drive to Bolivia’s remote southwestern border (drive is unaccompanied by guide, only driver). Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our staff who will be ready to assist with migrations procedures if needed.

Once in Bolivia, we start our 4WD adventure entering Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, home to endemic wildlife and protected Andean landscapes. Our first stops are Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, two jewels in the middle of an unforgiving high-altitude (4500m) desert. Continuing, we have the opportunity to spend some time in the hot springs of Polques with stunning views of the Bolivian Altiplano. Later, we continue toward the boiling geysers and steam jets of Sol de Mañana at nearly 5000m!

The day’s main highlight is Laguna Colorada with its hundreds of pink flamingos and beautiful volcanic views all around it.

End the day by reaching our very basic lodge (Basic, Standard) or the more comfortable and private hotel (Plus) further north in the evening.

MEALS Lunch, Dinner

ACCOMMODATION

BASIC: Very basic dormitory-style room, shared bathroom, no shower nor hot water (very basic, almost primitive accommodation) STANDARD: Private room with private bathroom and lukewarm shower PLUS: In order of availability/preference: Hotel Tayka del Desierto, Los Flamencos Eco Hotel or Mallku Cueva Hotel

SPECIAL INFORMATION Ideally, take some time to acclimatize before this trip as the altitude reaches almost 5000m. Otherwise, talk to your doctor to be prescribed altitude medication e.g. Diamox if needed

Day 2 - Lagoons, deserts & wildlife

Our second day will take us further north to our next destination in Salar de Uyuni (Plus) or the southern rim of it (Basic, Plus) The morning will see us driving across scenic Andean landscapes, including the “Jewels of the Bolivian Altiplano” (a chain of pristine lagoons home to hundreds of flamingos you can see/photograph up close). We will also be lucky enough to stop at other beautiful sites such as quirky rock formations and scenic viewpoints. The rest of the day will depend on the time of year in which you join us:

Dry season (May to November)

Plus package: We will enter the might Salar de Uyuni in the afternoon. We will enjoy our first taste of salt plains by driving to the northernmost end of the salt flats where we will be based for the night, not before enjoying the colors of sunset against the white backdrop of the salt flats. Sleep in a village in the northern rim of the flats. Accommodation: Tayka Hotel de Sal or Tambo Coqueza

Basic & Standard packages: We will arrive in a small village in the southern rim of Salar de Uyuni but will not enter it until the following day.

Rainy season (December to April)

Plus package: In the afternoon, we will head toward the town of Colchani (past the town of Uyuni) where we will arrive in the southeastern rim of the salt flats. Here, the famed Salt Hotels are located where we will be able to enjoy a picturesque sunset before arriving in one of these unique hotels. Accommodation: In order of preference/availability: Hotel Palacio de Sal; Luna Salada or Cristal Samaña

MEALS Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

BASIC: Basic room, shared bathroom, may have hot shower STANDARD: Private room with private bathroom and hot shower.

SPECIAL INFORMATION Your choice of package level will affect the location of your accommodation today. However, regardless of the package, you will see/visit all the same attractions, only in a different order/day

Day 3 - Salar de Uyuni

A full day is dedicated to enjoying the trip’s grand finale: Salar de Uyuni.

Plus: On our Plus package and in the dry season, we will visit the northern part of the salt flats, including the lesser-known village of Coqueza, gateway to the gorgeous Volcan Thunupa. You will optionally have the opportunity/time to take a moderate hike to an ancient site but what really stands out is the unmatched view of the entire extension of the Salar. Later, visit and hike to the top of Isla Incahuasi (easy to moderate hike) to enjoy the 360-degree views all around as well as the giant cacti growing on this bizarre island.

Basic & Standard: We will enter the salt flats through the southwestern end, immediately being mesmerized by the vastness and whiteness of this unique desert. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the deep-perspective effect which works great for fun photographs as well as climbing Incahuasi Island with its giant cacti to appreciate the sheer size of the salt flats thanks to the 360-degree view from here.

Plus, Basic & Standard: In the rainy season, you will enter the salt flats through the southeastern rim (all packages) and pass through the village of Colchani where you will be able to see its colorful market and optionally, a rustic, salt-processing plant. Most of the day will be spent slowly driving along the shore of the salt flats as it is not possible to drive much further. Immediately, we are in awe by the perfect “mirror” of the sky at our feet. Take your time to find the perfect reflection as well as playing with the deep-perspective effect offered by the endless, flooded plains.

Regardless of the package, you will be able to stay until sunset (time permitting) to appreciate the beautiful colors against the white backdrop of Salar de Uyuni. Alternatively, head out of the salt flats towards the town of Uyuni to make one last stop at the Train Cemetery (not a major attraction, just a picturesque stop) to end the day. We will take you to your desired place of drop off, either at your hotel, airport or bus station in Uyuni where this trip of a lifetime ends.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

  • This trip covers around 800 Km in three days of off road driving at high altitude and cold climate.
  • The trip can be easily enjoyed if you are prepared. It is recommended you read the itinerary before booking
  • You may attempt to form a small group of people to reduce costs, but bear in mind that the more people in the vehicle, the less comfortable the trip will be. Consider that you will be driving through rugged terrain and in most parts, it cannot even be considered a road (which is why we use top-notch 4WD vehicles)
  • It is ideal if you are headed from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni. It can also be taken in the opposite direction (See our Classic 3-Day Uyuni Salt Flats tour)
  • Please note that the itinerary is modified during the rainy months of Dec to April (see itinerary)

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARK AND OTHER SITES' ADMISSION FEES - IF APPLICABLE - ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE (READ BELOW)

WHAT TO BRING

  • Camera/drone
  • Effective sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat)
  • Warm layers as temperatures drop considerably in the evenings and mornings
  • Bathing suit, sandals
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Money in Bolivianos for national park entrance fees and personal spending (drinks, souvenirs, tips, etc) unless you request admission fees to be included in the final price

WHY TAKE THIS TRIP WITH US?

  • We are a tour operator, not a travel agency. We organize this trip by putting everything from transport to accommodation providers together to make sure it works as flawlessly as possible. Our trusted partners both in Chile and Bolivia have been tried and tested and we put our name confidently up front because we trust the safety and reliability they offer. A travel agency merely books you with a tour operator earning a commission for themselves and not giving a lot of care to your experience
  • We put safety at the top of our priorities. We know Bolivia and Chile inside out and the roads, towns, villages, deserts, etc. that are safe to travel through. By using our services, you can rest assured that we will get you to your destination at the end of every day safely

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO CONSIDER

  • The itinerary may suffer changes without previous notice due to factors outside our direct control such as weather and road conditions. If we are forced to alter the itinerary in any way, it will be based on good judgment and necessary modifications for your own safety and comfort and you will be promptly notified. We never alter or skip attractions in the itinerary without explaining the reasoning behind any possible change and providing adequate proof that such change may be necessary. Therefore, you should not take the above itinerary as “set in stone” and we will not he held liable for any loss or damage that you may feel arising from such changes made for your benefit.
  • Please note that the itinerary differs in the rainy season from the itinerary in the dry season. We will not be held liable/responsible for failure to read this information
  • This region is a remote area that lacks the usual comforts of the modern world. You should not expect high standards of accommodation, hot water is available some of the time (according to respective package) and electricity is available for a few hours or more where possible.
  • Food is handled hygienically and it is our priority and job that you are satisfied with the limited resources available in this region. Vegetarians are welcome, but should not expect special menus as we do what we can to serve appropriate portions of vegetables and fruit in the vegetarian menu
  • During the rainy season (December to March/April) some parts of the salt flats may be inaccessible such as Incahuasi Island and time on the actual salt flats is limited. Most of the regular itinerary is followed as normal

The following are dates in which other people have shown interest in forming a group for this tour. Use the ENQUIRY tab to request a new date or join one of the dates below to form a group and obtain the respective price. SALT FLATS TOUR FROM SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (CHILE) - 4 DAYS

Salar de Uyuni - Salt Flats Tours Bolivia - from San Pedro de Atacama Chile

This 4-day salt flats tour starts in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile and after a 3-day tour includes a transfer back to San Pedro de Atacama on Day 4. With up to 6 passengers per vehicle and a Spanish-speaking guide. A popular way to get to see this amazing area from Chile taking in the amazing Uyuni Salt Flats, colored lakes (Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada), natural thermal hot springs, high altitude geysers and much more - all the while passing through the amazing and unique desert scenery all around. A memorable and other-worldly experience that will be a highlight of your South America trip.

Trips to the Salar de Uyuni are an unforgettable experience but unfortunately the general standard of facilities and services are not very high in this remote area. We would like to make it clear that things are not as reliable, comfortable and professional as we would like on these tours so for this reason we do not promise more than what you will receive for your money. The accommodations and food will be basic. The driver acts as a basic guide but he is unlikely to speak any English, or if he does it won't be a good level. Due to the harshness of the terrain vehicle breakdowns are common. Still interested? Good, you should be because if you can put up with a bit of hardship you should have a great time. It is not essential to have an English-speaking guide for this tour as most of it is looking at landscapes and these are pretty self explanatory. Take some extra snacks, plenty of warm clothes and a sleeping bag (can be rented) and the accommodations won’t feel so bad. The drivers are used to breakdowns and are pretty adept at fixing their vehicles, they are always willing to help each other out and you are usually not stuck for long - so a bit of patience is often all you need. We believe if you are informed truthfully about the possible negative aspects of the tours you can prepare yourself better and will have a more positive experience.

The following is a typical tour but sometimes some things are omitted from a tour (for example during rainy season), sometimes additional things are included, so this shouldn’t be seen as a rigid itinerary, although the most popular main sites are always included. If there is something you really want included your group should stress this to your driver at the start of the tour so he can plan accordingly.

This 4-day  salt flats tour starts in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile and after a 3-day tour includes a transfer back to San Pedro de Atacama on Day 4. With up to 6 passengers per vehicle and a Spanish-speaking guide. A popular way to get to see this amazing area from Chile taking in the amazing Uyuni Salt Flats , colored lakes (Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada), natural thermal hot springs, high altitude geysers and much more - all the while passing through the amazing and unique desert scenery all around. A memorable and other-worldly experience that will be a highlight of your South America trip.

Please note that Day 4 does not include any sightseeing stops and is a transfer day only.

DAY 1 – San Pedro de Atacama –  Hito Cajon – Laguna Verde – Geysers – Laguna Colorada – Valle de las Rocas

You will be picked up from your central hotel in San Pedro de Atacama around 8am to be taken to the border at Hito Cajon (border of Chile / Bolivia). After passing through the border formalities it is a short jounrey to reach Laguna Verde where we will see the emerald green waters of this mineral rich lake (n. b. only green if there is some wind churning up the mineral - if calm there is a beautiful reflection of the volcanoes). We then head towards the geysers "Sol de Mañana" to witness the bubbling hot mud pools and shooting of steam many meters into the air.Next stop will be Laguna Colorada - a fasinating lake with red water and we can see many flamingos feeding along its shores. Here we will stay in a basic hotel for the night.

DAY 2 –  Laguna Colorada –  Desert of Siloli –  Laguna Honda –  San Juan

We depart on this second day after breakfast around 8am and we have a chance to see Laguna Colorado  again as we pass by a different side of the lake. We will travel through the Siloli desert area and see surreal rock formations.Further along today we pass by Laguna Honda to witness its sulphury smell and pass by some other high altiplano lakes. In the evening we arrive in the town of San Juan where we will stay the night.

DAY 3 – Full day on salt flats –  Salar de Uyuni  – Uyuni

Today we will visit the amazing salt flats. Here we will see the "ojos del sal" were water is bubbling up through holes in the Salar, we will see where local workers gather salt into mounds  and visit Isla Incahausi (also referred to as Isla Pescado) where we will find giant cacti and have great panaramic views of the surrounding salt flats. After leaving the salt flats we will visit the town of Colchani to see how the salt is processed and you can also ask your driver if he can take you to the Train Cemetery for the final stop on the tour before arriving in Uyuni. There will be plenty of time to stop and take photographs of the incredible salt flats throughout the day before we arrive to Uyuni in the evening around 17.00pm. We will rest for a couple of hours before setting off for our accomodations in Villa Mar.

DAY 4 –  Return to San Pedro de Atacama

We set off early (leaving 5am) for the  return to San Pedro de Atacama arriving around midday approximately in San Pedro. Please note that this day is just a transfer and not a tour - there will be no sightseeing or stops for photos etc.

  • Transportation in 4x4 vehicle (usually max 6 persons) - transfer to Border from San Pedro is by bus where you change to 4x4.
  • Drivers acts as basic guide - Spanish-speaking
  • Meals during the tour (take extra snacks as food can be quite plain)
  • Accommodation in basic lodgings (often no showers or if available there is a extra charge)
  • Pre-tour briefing the day before of the tour
  • Hotel pick up in the morning of the tour

NOT INCLUDED

  • Transport to San Pedro de Atacama (to start your tour - return on day 4 returns you to San Pedro)
  • Entrance fees – 30Bs + 150 Bs = 180BS total for the 2 days minimum (some itineraries visit some small attractions with small entrance fees)
  • Water - you recommend you purchase 2 liters per person per day to take with you.
  • Sleeping bag - highly recomended as the high altitude means cold nights!
  • Breakfast on first day, dinner on last day
  • Sunglasses and sun cream
  • Additional snacks and beverages
  • Torch - recommended
  • This tour starts in San Pedro de Atacama and DOES NOT include the cost of transport for getting there.
  • Please not that weather and conditions during rainy season may mean that some items on this tour are inaccessible - you will be advised of this at time of booking if this is the case.
  • Low season / high season  - This price is the low season price and some years around July / August prices can rise for "high season". We only know when this will happen and by how much when it actually happens and usually it is with just a couple of days notice. This is because it is the decision of the drivers union in Uyuni and not our or the operators. The price rise is usually around 20$ more but we cannot know for sure until the time. For bookings around this time you should book with the low season price and we always try to get the operators to honour advanced bookings at low season price. If they do not we will need to ask for the price difference or, if you don't wish to pay, you can cancel also.
  • Important  - For safety reasons, we won't be accepting bookings for tours starting between December 23rd and January 6th. You can read a more detailed explanation of why we don't do salt flats tours over Christmas/New Year period  HERE .
  • Groups are max 6 persons in a vehicle.
  • These tours visit very remote areas that have very limited facilities. If you are ill or there is an accident there are no medical facilities other than Uyuni town and even these are basic. If things go wrong you are faced with the reality of travel in a remote area of a developing country.
  • Altitude sickness - The salt flats tours travel to altitude of around 5000 meters so the majority of people will feel some effects. we recommend that you should be acclimitized to above 3000 meters before going on these tours and that you take headache tablets, altitude sickness: "soroche" tablets and any other medications that you may require.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read through these common questions & answers - if you cant find what you want to know send us your questions using the Ask a Question button

Unfortunately we do not offer the tours from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni  with an English speaking guide option and it is available with spanish speaking guide only currently. We have several options starting in Uyuni that offer English speaking guides.

We do not sell any salt flats tours from Dec 23rd through to Jan 6th because of safety concerns.  Specifically this is due to the high number of incidences of drunk driving that occur on salt flats tours during this time. Some of the companies we work with, for example Red Planet, also completely stop tours during this time for the same reason. We still don't sell tours with any company that we work with that does not stop completely during this period as whilst they are likely to be safer options the fact is there could be drunk drivers from other companies making the area less safe. From experience we think it is best to avoid the dangers and problems that occur this time of year.

Please do not ask us to recommend any companies for tours during this time as we do not recommend anyone for the reasons stated. If you must do a tour (and we understand this is a highlight and it would be bad to miss) we would suggest you do a one day tour only as the 3 day tours are more problematic for the drunk drivers (drivers tend to celebrate in the evening with friends in the local villages near the accommodations). Also keep a close eye on the condition of your driver if you do end up on a tour.

In our standard tour offerings we do not offer people the option to be able to upgrade hotels because this would involve taking one part of the group to the standard hotels and others to the upgraded hotel in a different area and therefore two different routes and too much additional driving. We can only offer hotel upgrade options if you are doing a private tour for this reason - please contact us for pricing if you are interested.

Salt flats tours in Uyuni usually start "approximately" 10.00 am to 11 am but this can vary. The reasons it can vary, apart from punctuality not being very common in Bolivia, can be for a number of different things. For example there is only one fuel station in Uyuni and it can be hard to get fuel quickly so drivers might have to queue for long periods to get fuel and this can affect preparations.

We usually request you to be at the local office at 9 AM to do your check-in, but if for example if your flight lands at 9 AM then no problem simply take a taxi to the office and be there as soon as you can - we will let the office now about your flight time and this will be taken into consideration. Also buses or flights arriving to Uyuni late (more common in Rainy season) can affect departure times - if someone in your assigned group is on transport that is late then the operator will try to wait as long as is possible to accomodate that so they can get on the tour that day - obviously there are limits to this and they dont want to wait too much as it effects the rest of the groups tour time. Tours starting in San Pedro usually start earlier around 8-8.30 am.

The Salt Flats (salar de Uyuni) tours leave year round including during the rainy season and in fact many people try to visit during the rainy season in order to see the "mirror effect" of the water sitting atop of the salt flats and reflecting the sky which is an incredible sight. This is caused when the water table below the salt flats has risen enough to cause the water to sit on top of the salt. It is fine to visit the area when there is a certain amount of water but when it becomes too deep (after long sustained periods of rainfall in consectutive days) some places can become inaccesible such as Isla Incahuasi and these must then be omitted from the tours but they can usually continue visiting other parts of the salt flats and the area to the south (the colored lakes, geysers, hot springs etc) are usually not affected so tours are not cancelled completely.

The road between La Paz and Uyuni usually becomes a bit problematic with potholes and other damage caused but the constant rain and is worst in Mar/Apr time. The buses are sometimes cancelled due to this and other forms of transport such as train or flights are recommended or alternatively you can travel via Sucre / Potosi to Uyuni which is a better conditioned road that is less affected.

The town of Uyuni and the Salt Flats themselves are around 3700 meters (12139 feet) so 1 and 2 day tours are usually around this altitude only.

For 3 day tours you will visit much higher altitudes with the second nights’ accommodation near the Laguna Colorado area being at around 4300 meters and the Sol de Mañana geothermal field that is visited at around 4900 meters (16076 feet). You may also drive over a pass at  5000 meters (16404 feet), depending on the exact route taken, which will be the highest point.

On 2,3 and 4 day salt flat tours there will be a maximum of 6 travellers in the vehicle (1 in the front passenger seats, 3 in the  center seat row and 2 in the rear seat row) plus the driver/guide.

On 1 day tours there can be up to 7 people in the vehicle (although usually 6) as the group gets out of the vehicle much more often and comfort is not an issue like it is for the long driving distances of the multi day tours.

People enjoy taking the interesting perspective style photos on the salt flats and of course there will be some time to stop and do this.  The exact amount of time is impossible to say as it will depend on a variety of factors such as how long you have taken at previous stops, weather conditions, the group dynamic etc and you also need to bear in mind there is a schedule to keep to so the driver will only allow the amount of time he can in order to keep to the schedule safely.

As for items to use in your photos, some drivers do have some fun items but some wont have anything especially for photo props. The best advice is to take something interesting things yourself so you can get unique shots – let your creative side go crazy!

English

Atacama Salt Flat. A magic place.

Atacama Salt Flat. A magic place.

The Second Region of Chile is home to the largest salt flat in the country: the   Atacama  Salt Flat . In the middle of a fantastic natural landscape, the salt flat shelters important archaeological records and impressive geology. Near the commune of Toconao , located 56 kilometers from  San   Pedro  de  Atacama , lies one part of the Los Flamencos Natural Reserve , the main natural reserve of the II Region on the Andean flank. The area known as Soncor is home to the  Atacama  Salt Flat , a true reservoir of birds and one of the most beautiful spots in the whole area to see how the sun sets behind the western mountains. This saline deposit is one of the main tourist attractions of  San   Pedro  de  Atacama . Its obvious beauty and enviable geography make this place a magical place. Covered with a brackish white, the Salar de  Atacama   allows the contemplation of lagoons on the surface, which break the mystical silence of the desert . The Salar de  Atacama , which occupies an extension of 100 kilometers long and 80 kilometers wide, is the result of the upwelling of subterranean waters that, saturated with salts, evaporate leaving crusts rich in salt and minerals.

salar-de-atacama-3

Undoubtedly, the  Atacama  Desert is a mythical territory where legends, ancestral Kunza traditions, and mining stories intersect. Famous for being the driest arid zone in the world, one would tend to believe that life in its geography is limited to a solitary cactus or a lost bird. Big mistake. The  Atacama  Desert contemplates the most varied species of animals and vegetation, making it a unique place in the world.

Uyuni Salt Flats tour from San Pedro de Atacama

This post is kind of a report from the 3-day Uyuni Salt Flats tour from San Pedro de Atacama that I’ve taken in 2019. It should therefore offer some insights into what you can expect from those tours, how much do they cost and which tour to pick. In case you were seeking more information about Uyuni Salt Flats, such as how to get there; when is the best time to visit; other options to explore the area as well as some general info about this incredible place, including the local legend about the origins of Uyuni Salt Flats, please click here .

Which agency to pick?

From my little research, conducted both online as well as in-person in the location, most mid-range priced tours, including the bit more expensive ones, were rather indifferent when it comes to standards as well as itineraries. As I’ve mentioned above, I have further confirmed this conclusion later when comparing our experience with few other visitors who have taken somewhat more expensive tours with different agents.

Please note that I am talking about shared tours only. If you have a budget strong enough to book a private tour, that would take your experience to a different level. But because private tours are in a different budget league that sometimes even brings private chefs and guides into an occasion, I’ll stick to the economic reality of shared tours only. FYI, there are also helicopter trips on the menu, in case you were interested in the very top league budget activities 😉

salt flat tour from san pedro de atacama

So back to the shared tours them 😉 It appears that the major differences between the individual shared tours appear are determined by the language abilities of the drivers who also function as guides. The bilingual tours were obviously more expensive. Well, to be honest, there were also some minor differences, when it comes to the itinerary as well as level of accommodation during the first night of the tour, which took place in one of the southern Altiplano plateau villages but as I’ve said, those weren’t of any decisive significance.

The second nights of the 3-day tours were mostly booked in more luxurious hotels made of salt blocks right next to the Salt Flats, where the possible differences in standards and services were even smaller. When it comes to the meals, most tours were also comparable. Some really yummy and some just OK but there was always more food than we could eat. The vehicles were all well maintained, I guess it’s a must-do, taking the natural conditions into consideration. Again, this is a conclusion from the shared knowledge of more midrange tours, not just mine.

<img loading=

Overall, I wouldn’t bother that much about which agency to pick if I were you. Tourism is an important source of income for the locals and they have learned that making a quick buck at the expense of losing a reputation is not worth it in the long run. BTW, don’t book it online in advance as you’d overpay the whole thing.

Once you’re in the area, ask around the agencies. Ask all specific questions you might have about itinerary, accommodation, vehicles, or whatever might concern you (this article could give you some hints about what to ask about) and check the agency reviews online (I mean real reviews, not the fake stuff or the frustration-venting ) before you’ll purchase the tour.

<img loading=

You might be thinking to head to Bolivia first and book the tour there. It’s true that the tours are generally cheaper when purchased in Bolivia (on average an equivalent of €90 for a 3-day tour) as opposed to an equivalent of €160 from Chilean San Pedro de Atacama . However, if you consider the expenses of getting to Bolivia and staying there for a night, it nearly levels the price so if you already are in San Pedro , you might just as well take the tour from here.

Before knowing any of the above, I’ve decided to opt for a mid-ranged priced 3 days/2 nights tour with one of the numerous agencies from Uyuni , which I’ve booked with an agent in my hostel in San Pedro de Atacama . Just so you know, there were also even differences in prices people paid for the very same tour even among my group, which could have been the (rather significant) cut for the tour-selling agent.

As far as I know, tours are all-inclusive, meaning that accommodation and meals were included. I only had to pay the National park entry (150,-BOB/€19.50) and a small fee for an optional dip in a thermal swimming pool, plus for the 6l of water, I was told to take with me. Please note that prices might fluctuate, depending on the season. Expect to pay more in the high season from June to September.

Uyuni Salt Flats 3 day tour from San Pedro de Atacama

Day 1: lagunas vedionda, hende and colorada, geiser sol de la mañana, desierto salvador dalí and termas de polques.

Early morning we were picked up from our hotels and driven to the border. We have entered Bolivia at Hito Cajon at 4600 meters above sea level about two hours later. Right after the immigration process on the Bolivian side, followed by a gorgeous breakfast, we have entered this insane land full of lakes, volcanoes, flamingos, llamas, foxes and amazing colours. There was a lot of breathtaking moments, some literally as they are caused by the lack of oxygen and some by the looks of the landscape that surrounded us.

We have seen Vulcan Licancabur from both sides, then we have visited Lagoons Verde and Hedionda , stopped at Salvador Dalí Desert , after which we are blessed with an opportunity to take a dip at 3800m above sea level at Termas de Polques , which was followed by a lunch break in a restaurant right by the thermal pools. After an amazing meal, we headed to check out the Geiser Sol de la Mañana at crazy 4990 metres above sea level. The last attraction we’ve visited before heading to the hotel was, as the name suggests very colourful Laguna Colorada .

salt flat tour from san pedro de atacama

The scenery never failed to surprise us as it kept changing. The only problem was to deal with the altitude as the lack of oxygen was rather annoyingly persistent in getting attention, especially during the short walks, regardless of whether you’re fit or not. Some of the world’s top athletes can talk about it as well. For example, Bolivians are still talking about their glorious 6:1 victory against the stars-packed Argentinian national football team in 2009.

Anyway. I’ve learned that taking numerous deep breaths to catch up with the oxygen works for me. But then there are individual symptoms of altitude sickness, such as fatigue, headaches and so on. Both of our 4WDs also apparently had a bottle of oxygen each, in case of emergencies. The local solution is chewing on coca leaves. Everyone in Bolivia is chewing hojas de coca . The higher you get, the more blown the cheeks of the locals look from the number of leaves they’re sucking on.

Uyuni Salt Flats Tour, Day 1

The day ended in an Altiplano village Villamar Mallcu with a wee bit mediocre but still eatable dinner and a bit modest but clean and well-maintained accommodation. I’ve enjoyed the whole day a lot. The crew was nice and we kind of became friends over the shared experience of enjoying the landscapes. Everything was perfect until I’ve fallen asleep in the room I had to share with a young Chilean-Bolivian couple.

It proved that even sleeping itself wasn’t ideal when it comes to oxygen. I kept waking up in panic from dreams in which I was drowning, which proved to be more than just a dream. Basically, my “automatic” night breathing is rather shallow so I was literally not getting enough oxygen in my system. Again, when I woke up each time, few conscious deep breaths sorted it out temporarily but then I fell asleep again and so it went in circles.

I must have woken up panicking dozens of times that night. Uh, trust me, I won’t remember it as the best night of my life. In my dreams, just before they’ve turned into drowning/panicking mode, I vaguely remember how I’ve come up with a very clever redesign of the meaning of the “pulling something out the thin air”expression. Obviously, I can’t remember it and it keeps bothering me until now 🙂

<img loading=

DAY 2: Valles de Rocas, Anaconda Canyon

We woke up early in Villamar Mallcu where its 3000 inhabitants live their happy but also what feels like rather hard lives at 4010 metres above sea level. On the other hand, it looks like tourism is serving the community well. I mean that this little village appeared like under a massive redevelopment as I could see a building site or some sort of extension being built almost everywhere I looked. As I’ve mentioned above, the facilities were rather modest but also clean and comfy. Furthermore, the locals were very friendly and hospitable.

If you are guessing that more riding through epic landscapes was what followed the breakfast, you are spot on 😉 Villamar Mallcu is surrounded by some pretty rock formations, which was to become a theme for the whole day: various rock formations in an area conveniently called Valles de Rocas , which they’ve also called Italia Perdida , but my limited Spanish and lack of sleep didn’t let me understand what’s difference between the two names. Anyway. There was a lot of rock formations. Right until lunchtime.

salt flat tour from san pedro de atacama

After a yummy lunch in a local restaurant, we went for a short walk to Laguna Negra to enjoy the change of scenery and chill for a while by the lagoon in amazing green surroundings (and more rock formations). The day peaked with an incredible Anaconda Canyon in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve . So we have ended the day each with about a thousand photos of various rock formations in a luxurious hotel that’s all built of salt bricks. We were all pretty tired from a long day so after dinner, which btw didn’t really match the luxurious vibe of the hotel, everyone pretty much headed straight to bed.

This time we’ve all had en suite private rooms in a place that was was a massive step up, if compared to the first night but was exactly what we were told upon purchasing the tour. Not to forget, there was one more highlight of the day ahead of me: thanks to my smoking habit, which I went to feed outside of the hotel, I was lucky to get a massive bonus of witnessing an insane sunset at 4000m above the sea level. Above and behind me, there was a storm while in a distance one could see the colours of sunset.

<img loading=

DAY 3: Salar de Uyuni and Isla Incahuasi

Compared to the night before, I’ve had far fewer drowning nightmares but I could not enjoy my very improved sleeping in a comfortable bed all the way, this time for different reasons: we had to get up at 3:45 in order to catch the sunrise. We all hoped to get to the relatively nearby Salt Flats as soon as possible to capture the Milky Way with an epic reflection off the water surface. However, there was too much water in the area and the drivers have hesitated to drive through it for quite a while.

Apparently, while the rainy season brings the photographic advantages as the water creates a salt lake but at the same time, there’s a high risk of not being able to attend to some places if the water levels are too high. In the end, our drivers decided to go for it. We were a bit late for Milky Way as the night already started giving way to the sun, nevertheless, it was still a very magical experience.

<img loading=

After over an hour of enjoying the sunrise and “walking on water” (see the featured image), we moved on. The change of scenery was clear. Our Uyuni Salt Flats tour finally brought us to the actual Salar de Uyuni . I had no idea how big the thing was really. Except for few high peaks on the horizon, all you could see was a flat white surface and the skies above…

salt flat tour from san pedro de atacama

At that point, I had no clue that the whole day was about to turn into a mother of all photoshoot sessions. We drove towards Isla Incahuasi ,  home to 7 people, some cats, goats and a lot of cactuses. A lot of cactuses. For a small fee of 30,-BOB to enter the island, which was like an Instagram cactus hashtag paradise 🙂 Any random shot could be sold as a postcard here.

After everyone made at least 1000 pictures of cactuses and a nice little trek to the top of the island, we had eaten a yummy lunch prepared by our driver and moved on further into the salt flat. It was a rather strange place. I kept thinking I’m walking on a frozen lake in my shorts only while the skies played along.

Uyuni Salt Flats

The photo shoot was about to climax. Various props were brought up by the driver, everyone went picture-making mad. I still had a bit of the cliché photos embracing in me at this point so I’ve used it to fight the Godzilla after a little persuasion of the driver. We then moved to a little souvenir shop with a restaurant, before heading to the last stop of the tour, which was a train cemetery .

Few practical advices

  • I’d say that the best thing is to book the tour together with some friends or at least someone you’ve met in your hostel;
  • If you are a taller person – make sure to stress that upon purchasing your tour so you are not squeezed in 4×4 for 3 days;
  • If you can, try not sitting at the back of the vehicle as you’ll be bumping up and down all the time;
  • Bring some warm clothes – it can get rather chilly in the mornings at that altitude;
  • Take your flip flops with you. You’ll find them useful in the hotels + the walking on the salty water would destroy your shoes;

<img loading=

  • Be prepared that the water you’ll be standing in to take your epic sunrise picture at 5:45 am at 3800m is bloody freezing 🙂 But don’t worry, it’s still quite a cool feeling to do it. I even went in barefooted 😉
  • Don’t drink the night before you go up. A hangover at 4000m could be a form of torture;
  • If you are a factual kind of person, do your reading before the trip. The drivers are usually very nice and friendly lads but they are not trained as tour guides. The information they sometimes share with you is – let’s say – not always exactly accurate and backed up with scientific data;
  • Please note that Bolivia requires a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate to enter the country;
  • Forgive me for stating the obvious but don’t forget to check your entry requirements into Bolivia so you don’t get a nasty surprise at the border…

Sort of conclusion

IMHO, this Uyuni Salt Flats tour from San Pedro de Atacama was 100% worth it and I would recommend it to any nature lover. It’s definitely up there among the best ever nature adventures I’ve ever had. To be honest, I should have taken a longer tour, when I thought about the whole experience later. The only downside is that I have overestimated my Spanish as well as my adjustment to the altitude a bit but both of these little missteps are my fault.

The tour starts in San Pedro de Atacama. If you arrive in San Pedro de Atacama from Santiago de Chile, the best option is to fly directly to Calama. At Howlanders you can also book a private transfer between Calama airport and San Pedro .

If you are arriving from Peru, you will most likely be arriving from Cuzco or Arequipa. Questions & Answers

What are the differences between shared and private rooms in hostels.

Shared rooms have from 3 to 6 beds and they are used for other travelers, the bathroom is shared with other rooms. On the first night, you can have a hot shower for the cost of 10 pesos bolivianos. The private room has a private bathroom with hot water during both nights and it is not shared with other travelers.

What are the hostels like?

On our tour, the accommodation in Sal is of a higher quality than the rest of the accommodations in the area, and you will always be assigned a private room. The accommodation at Villa Mar is slightly more basic, as there are no higher quality accommodations in the area. Both accommodations have hot water and heating only in common areas, although it may not reach the level of comfort desired by all travelers, in which case we recommend booking the tour in hotels. Keep in mind that this tour is an expedition to a very unpopulated and economically underdeveloped area.

10 Great Things to Do in the Atacama Desert of Chile

T he Atacama Desert in Chile is an otherworldly place to visit, with vast salt flats, saline lagoons, breathtaking hiking opportunities and the third-highest geysers in the world all surrounded by a ring of towering volcanoes.

Hiking in the Atacama Desert is a unique and exhilarating experience that takes you through rugged terrain and surreal landscapes. You’ll be surrounded by towering volcanoes, endless stretches of sand dunes, and colorful rock formations, all while experiencing the unique flora and fauna that make this place so special.

The Atacama Desert of Chile: Top 10 Activities

The Atacama Desert of Chile is found in the northern part of the country and is described as one of the driest places on Earth. Some parts of the region are considered rainless, with average rainfall in the region reported to be just 0.04 inches (1 mm).

The Atacama Desert reaches elevations up to 13,000 feet and contains colorful, rocky terrain, sand and salt lakes that create the perfect destination for adventure travelers.

The adventure starts by just getting to this region.  The closest airport is El Loa Airport in the town of Calama.  Why do we describe it as an adventure to get there?

Due to the mountainous landscape, the turbulence is quite extreme as you descend.  Once you land and your stomach returns from your throat, it’s about an hour drive to San Pedro de Atacama which is the main town within the desert.

1.  Visit Salt Flats

While there are many in the region if you want to see the largest in Chile head to the Salar de Atacama.  Another interesting fact is that it is the world’s largest source of Lithium.  The flat was formed by water flowing down from the Andes Mountains, since it cannot escape the basin it evaporates causing salt deposits.

The combination of the terrain, mountains in the distance, and water pools make this quite a unique spot.  If you are lucky you may even spot a few flamingos.  We highly recommend coming for sunset.

2. Hike the Los Cardones Ravine

Also known as cactus valley, the Los Cardones Ravine is an area with a high concentration of cacti.  It was neat to get up close and personal with these fascinating species.  It is impressive that they can survive with such little rainfall.  The insides of the cacti are actually composed of a wood like material that had historically been used in buildings within the surrounding area.

Since use for construction was destroying the cactus and the annual growth of only 1 cm per year, the government considers them protected and a hefty fine is given for cutting one of them down.  The hike offers several beautiful landscapes through the ravine with a little flowing stream that collects water from some of the surrounding mountains allowing for a bit of green vegetation throughout the hike.

3. Experience Extreme Desert Sports by Sandboarding

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear desert?  Sand is certainly a popular answer to that question.  When you are in a desert region with high elevations and resulting dunes, how best to experience this than by strapping a board to your feet and sandboarding !

We had experienced wakeboarding and snowboarding, however testing our skills on the sand was a completely unique experience.  The gorgeous scenery combined the thrill of boarding made for the perfect afternoon.

Beware, the sun is blazing off the dunes and there is no lift up the sand.  Be prepared for a pretty physical experience as your climb to the top of the sand dune.  We promise the ride down will make you quickly forget about the trek to the top!

4. Relax in the Puritama Hot Springs

There is certainly an oasis to be found within the Atacama Desert of Chile region and that is Puritama Hot Springs.  The hot springs are comprised of a series of 8 pools that are filled with geothermal waters offering a natural hot spring in the desert!

The adventure is getting here…..it requires you to descend down a steep cliff.  Our van hugged the side of the narrow mountain road as we closed our eyes and prayed we didn’t roll off!  Many people chose to park at the top and walk down due to the dangerous descent.

The pools are surrounded by lush greenery and there are red wooden paths that take you to each one.  The water is clear as glass and there are stunning 360 degree views of the colorful canyons to take in while you relax in the pool.  Overall it was surreal to be soaking in warm waters surrounded by the dry desert atmosphere.

5. Hike the Valle de la Luna

Another interesting fact about the Atacama Desert of Chile is that it is described as the most “Mars-like” place on Earth.  NASA agrees and comes to the Valle de la Luna to test out equipment, in fact a prototype of the Mars Rover was tested here!  The dry environment closely mimics the surface on Mars or the Moon.

The landscapes we saw during this hike were breathtaking.  Over time the wind and water carved out some really unique landscapes causing amazing colors, shapes and textures across the area.  A hike is the perfect way to see it up close.

It was interesting to cross each hill as you never knew what was coming on the other side.  Red rocks, white sand, a cliff, rugged terrain, flat sand dune?  The Valle de la Luna is in our opinion one of the “must-see ” activities within the region.  The hike really showcases the unique beauty of this desert area.

6. Stargaze

Another worldly fact on the region, it is one of the few places on Earth with 300+ clear sky days in a year.  Combining their clear skies with the low light pollution and high elevation creates the perfect trifecta for stargazing!

In fact, it is home to some the world’s largest and most sophisticated telescopes.  We chose not to take a specific stargazing tour but that is an option in the region.  Our hotel, the Alto Atacama, offered an astronomy tour each night with lay-flat beds and expert guides to point out the major constellations.

The sky was just jaw-dropping each night as it was painted with countless numbers of stars.  We had never seen night skies as beautiful as they are in the Atacama Desert.

7. Scout for Wildlife at Los Flamencos National Reserve

Any guesses which type of wildlife we were scouting for?  Yes, flamingos!  If you look closely in the photo above, you can see the dots of flamingos scattered throughout the salt flat.  The reserve is made up of seven distinct areas providing different landscapes and scenery throughout the reserve.

Our destination was the Salar de Pujsa to see the combination of colorful landscape with a high probability of flamingo sightings.  We headed East of San Pedro de Atacama towards the boarders of Bolivia and Argentina.  These salt flats are vast and span across the country borders.

The beautiful yellow color did not come without consequence, the smell of sulfur definitely filled the air as we gazed at the landscapes.  Yet another “wow” factor of this region was seeing this area and knowing the microorganisms found in the salt water was able to sustain the flamingos.

Overall the Atacama Desert of Chile is an off-the-beaten path area filled with unique activities.  While you can plan visits via tour operators for each of these areas, staying at the Alto Atacama includes 2 activities per day.  There tours include small groups and highly knowledgeable guides who are passionate about educating visitors on the uniqueness of the region.

The vast number of landscape differences to see in the region offer many options when creating an itinerary.  One thing is quite certain, there is no shortage of adventure when visiting the driest place on Earth!

8. Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) trail

One of the most popular hiking trails in the Atacama Desert is the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) trail. This 6-kilometer trail takes you through a maze of sandstone formations, eroded by centuries of wind and water. The trail culminates in a stunning panoramic view of the valley and surrounding mountains, particularly breathtaking at sunset when the landscape is bathed in a warm, golden glow.

9. Hike the Quebrada de Guatin trail

Another popular trail is the Quebrada de Guatin trail, which takes you through a narrow canyon lined with towering cliffs and colorful rock formations. Along the way, you’ll pass by sparkling waterfalls and crystal-clear pools, as well as unique flora and fauna such as cacti and foxes.

10. Hike the Tatio Geysers Trail

For the more adventurous hikers, the Tatio Geysers trail offers an unforgettable experience. This 8-kilometer trail takes you through a geothermal field of fumaroles and geysers, some of which shoot water over 10 meters high. The early morning hours offer the best chance to witness the geysers in action, as the rising sun creates an ethereal mist that hovers over the landscape.
