Siddara Betta is a popular pilgrimage site near Tumkur. The area is home to an ancient Shiva temple and is revered for its medicinal properties. Its name literally translates to Hill of Saints. The site was once home to Hindu saints who prayed and meditated here. Today, it serves as an Ashram and is also an excellent destination for tourists.

The Siddara Betta hill is a popular trekking and climbing destination. Because of its steep slopes, the trek can be challenging. Visitors should also bring flashlights. Siddara Betta – A Wonderful Tourist Place Near Madhugiri

Siddara Betta is one of the most visited places near Madhugiri. Surrounded by rocky hills, temples and caves, the tourist place is located at a distance of 100 kms from Bangalore in Tumkur. This place is most visited by trekkers and adventurers as well as pilgrims who come to Siddara Betta for the Shrine of Lord Shiva which is placed inside the caves.

The majority of tourists visiting Siddara Betta are pilgrims who come to see the Shrine of Lord Shiva. The place is also known for the high medicinal value of its herbs. Siddara Betta in Kannada means ‘Hill of Saints’, it is so called because, in older days, many Hindu Saints performed penance and meditation here. Although it is no more in practice, currently there is an Ashram situated at the base of the hill and Saints do visit there.

Things to Do in and around Siddara Betta

Trekking: There are man-made stones which cover the entire way up to the hill, which makes it an easy climb for trekkers. It is surrounded by lush greenery and is extremely picturesque once you reach the top. Siddara Betta is a famous trek location for adventure enthusiasts. The rocky terrain and caves add to the thrilling trek experience. The path of the trek includes caves and many uneven boulders. Although the trek up to the temple is pretty easy.

Cave Exploration: Apart from trekking, cave exploration at Siddara Betta is preferred by many. Inside the cave, there is a complete route that twists through rocks and boulders. This could allow only one person to walk through it at a time. The cave route is difficult as compared to the rest of the trek, hence it consumes energy and time.

Bird Watching: Devarayana Durga is a forest which lies close to Siddara Betta, it is an ideal place for a bird enthusiast. It is home to a variety of migratory birds and rare species like the Yellow Throated Bulbul.

How to Reach Siddara Betta

The nearest airport is Bangalore, which is at a distance of 100 kms. From here one can reach the Betta by road.

Bangalore is connected with a railway line with most cities. From Bangalore, you will have to take the road to Siddara Betta.

The place has a well-connected road network. It is closer to Tumkur and can be reached by taking the Bangalore Pune highway. Buses operate up to Koratagere and Siddara Betta is only 12 kms from there.

The Lost Lander

A quick getaway from Bangalore- Siddarabetta trek

Lockdown 5.0. simply put, was just another normal day in Karnataka, except that the educational institutions were still under lockdown. So, unwinding on a weekend after a long work week was normal too. With friends, I chose to hike on a Sunday morning to Madhugiri betta, the second highest monolithic hill in Asia. We started from Bangalore at 04.30.am. hoping to start the hike as soon as the gates were opened. While KSTDC has been abundantly promoting post-Covid tourism in the state, we had a surprise awaiting us at the trek base. Since Madhugiri fort comes under ASI’s protected monuments (controlled by the central government), we were told that trekking wasn’t permitted by the Central government. Hence, we were left with two options. Either return home or find another hill nearby where we could hike.

We chose the latter. So instant suggestions that came from someone in the group was Devarayanadurga and Siddarabetta. Then, we decided to give Devarayanadurga a miss as we all favoured a hike over a flight of stairs. We arrived at the base of Siddarabetta where we noticed a board that said, ‘climbing the hill with footwear was a sin’. Since many people use this path to visit a temple situated halfway, we didn’t want to hurt the local sentiments by wearing our shoes. Thinking that ‘a barefoot hike was definitely going to be an experience’ in our heads, we left our shoes back in our car.

The initial part of the climb, until the Siddeshwara Swamy temple was steep but easy with well laid out steps and iron rods to hold onto. When we reached a small temple kind of a spot, the path split into two. The Siddeshwara Swamy temple was to the left, where too many people seemed to be as if there was no pandemic going on and there exists no concept called ‘Social distancing’. We decided to distance ourselves from the gathering and took the path to the right. With having to pass between too many boulders, it did seem a little confusing initially. The distant passing clouds now seemed as if they had come to meet and greet us. But after walking a little ahead, we reached an area that was a transition from dry rocky mountain to rain soaked green forests. The real challenge of walking barefoot started there, with unassumed ground with gravel and possible thorns from the shrubs.

A little further, we reached an open rocky area where the view in front of us was playing hide and seek with each passing cloud. Apart from the drizzle and gusty winds that made it difficult for us to stand, we were mind-blown by the view we saw each time the clouds cleared out. There exists a small rain fed pond, a couple of meditating chambers that house Shiva Lingas (history unknown) and dilapidated remains of an old fortress. There was nobody else other than us in this entire stretch. We walked further and crossed two more hills before deciding to return, or else we would lose our way back.

It started to rain on our return, and we were quite drenched by the time we made it to the car that was parked just at the base point. The small eateries and stalls were slowly opening by that time which we chose not to visit, in order to avoid any social contacts with anyone else outside the group that we had gone in. We ate a few biscuits as a substitute for breakfast that we had carried from home and decided to stop the car next, only at home. It was a much-needed break and a pleasant little hike.

• It is an easy hike and very good for beginners.
• Be careful to carry all snacks only in a closed backpack as there are too many monkeys on the way.

It is one of the top places for trekking near Bangalore , and among the popular religious places in the Tumkur region. Located at an elevation of 1700 feet, Siddara Betta is a tourist place surrounded by rocky hills, temples, and caves. The hill is frequently visited by trekkers, adventures as well as pilgrims who climb the mountain to visit the shrine of Lord Siddalingeshwara which is placed inside the caves. Siddara Betta means 'Hill of Saints' in the local Kannada language owing to the many Hindu saints who perform penance and meditation within the caves here in the olden days. Besides, this place is also very popular for medicinal plants. The hill is very much loved by trekking enthusiasts and professional climbers due to the amazing panoramic views of the surrounding villages and the serene environment atop. The 4 km trekking path is moderate in terms of the level of difficulty. The trek pathway starts with a flight of staircase and later progress to a more rugged stairway carved onto the hill with a steeper gradient. It takes 45 minutes to reach the natural cave temple of the Lord Siddeshwara Swami from the base of the hill. After that, the trekking trail traces through some huge boulders and caves. From here, one has to take the path to the right of the cave temple to reach the summit of the hill. On the way, one can see a tiny crescent-shaped man-made pool called Alasande Kere. There is a ruined fort on the summit which was built by King Kurangaraya in the 13th century. It is also believed that King Kurangaraya vanquished in one of the many wars hid with a small group of his supporters in Siddara Betta which was at that time called Suvarana Giri ( Golden Hill). Siddara Betta is nearly 100 km distance from Bangalore via Koratagere. Road is fine for all type of vehicles. Siddarabetta is the local term for “Hill of Saints.” It is home to a most auspicious Shiva temple, and used to be home to several saints who would come here to meditate and attain enlightenment. Good place for trekking lovers. Currently, there is ashram here at the Hill of Saints, which is visited by saints and holy-men on a regular basis. Innumerable Ayurvedic plants are there in the hill. It is also called Sasya Sanjeevini Kshethra. No restaurants are available. A great place for botany students and researchers.

Once you climb the hill and after you take bath in holy water you'll find extremely peaceful . It's 100 km from Bangalore, we left at 5am early morning, reached at 7am, can easily climb the hills ,

A good serene hill after Tumkur for trekking! It was nice and easy climb up and the cave temple is worth visiting.Once you visit the temple and take holy bath, we can move up through the huge boulders.It will give you a cave exploring experience.Further up you can find ruins of old houses,overall it was wonderful soothing experience.

Siddarabetta, around 100Kms from Bangalore. We took a turn after tumkur, GPS will take you till end. After tumkur, the road becomes narrow but still in good condition. Heard that private buses ply from Tumkur. Will be a good drive with 2W/4W. Better to avoid in rainy days. Better to start climbing hills as early as possible due to hot sun in noon. Open most of teh day but better to return by 5PM. Have breakfast around Tumkur area; later you may not get a decent one. Carry some fruit juices and water is must. There will be some chat/cool drink shops on the way but works for refreshments. Most of the hill climbing is under sun. It takes 1 hour approximately on average speed. NO for heart related issue person. Place is safe and secure, can take children. No rest rooms in bottom of the hill or at top of the hill. Lots of monkeys, ensure your valuables especially vehicle keys and cell phone inside the bag, they will snatch whatever they feel. The hill has some medicinal plants and no details further available. I call this as hill climbing than a trekking. Climbing with foot wear is typically not entertained due to scared place, but we saw many people wearing shoes to climb. Free car parking on the road sides until you reach the steps. There is no need of any guidance required and steps can easily take you to the temple. Slightly you get steep for a distance. Once you reach top or even 70% you feel cool air. Advise you to carry a towel where you get holy water sprinkled from the natural spring on your body at temple. The water seems to be medicinal and drinkable. We have Siddeshwara idol. You will find few saints meditating near this area; you can ask advises if you like. After reaching the temple if you still want to explore, take a right turn, where you pass through some boulders, some are slightly dark and torch may be necessary. You reach the end of hill after 15-20mins walk, which is more on flat region. Not so great to see except few abolished structures and hill top view. There seems to be caves but it looked like passages than caves as we think of. There are no guided tours to caves from locals after some criminal incidents. You may get some water flow from springs in monsoon. You will find few birds in morning time, if interested. Further if you still have "more" energy, you can plan to visit like Channaraya durga fort, Devarayanadurga for temples, Namada chilume/Deer park, Madhugiri fort, Mandara giri, Nijagal betta, Shivagange. These are climbing hills, so you can split in to other weekends.

A great place to for both religious and adventure. This place is frequented by many to visit the temple on top and hence request all to not to consider it as a trekking spot. Many walk bare foot till the temple, a shower (at least head) with the water from near the temple is always refreshing. If interesting in trekking, better carry your shoes in covers till this point and then climb up from the right side of the temple. You will have fun crossing big boulders and bushy land, but there is a clear pathway if you observe. At the top you see few huts/structures possibly used by people who live /meditate on the top. It’s a wast area up there and when we went, we were the only ones out there. As usual, carry you water/food and avoid littering please.

Nijagal Betta is a hillock located near Dobbaspet town of Tumkur and also known as Siddara Betta. The ruins of ancient temples and fort serves as a certain landmark, where you will be able to spot the hill from the Pune-Bangalore National Highway. Siddara Betta Trek – When divine meets the Adventure

Place: siddara betta, tumkur.

Distance: 100 km from Bangalore Type: Trekking Ideal for: Friends and Family Trek Difficulty: Easy Trek Length: 3 kilometers one way Trek Duration: 1.5 hour one way

Trekking group at my office was stagnant since the last trek to Madhugiri . Siddara Betta was in my todo list and it was time to move it to the done list. I created a trekking event and 25 people turned up for the trek. We booked a minibus to accommodate such a big group and also got some snacks and refreshments for the trek.

Saturday morning: Naresh stays near the office so he took care of onboarding everyone in the morning. Smitha and I were waiting near the Nelamangala toll gate only to be picked up at 7 am. We were welcomed by a big shoutout. The music was playing loud and everyone was dancing. Even I joined them with my zero experience in dancing (Nagin dance came for the rescue :D). We pulled over at Vrindavan Bhavan just before Dabasbete for breakfast. The dancing session continued with even more intensity after the breakfast. Meanwhile, the bus took right turn at Dabasbete to take Koratgere route. Siddarabetta is another 53 kilometer from Dabasbete. After 42 kilometers an arch to the left welcomed us to the Siddara betta. The road condition was bad for the last 11 km. We distributed the refreshments while everyone was getting down.  After a first group photo, we started trekking together. There were a lot of vendors on either side of the road and throughout the trail selling Puja items, food, and water. So don’t forget to carry your wallet you might feel hungry at any time 😛

Trekking: An arch reading “Shri Siddeshwara Swamy Kshetra” welcomed us. There’s also written signboard in Kannada which says “Devotees are requested to climb barefoot”. It’s up to you if you want to go barefoot or with shoes on. My suggestion would be to go with shoes if you are planning to go beyond the temple.

The starting tail is boring yet tiring as we just have to climb plain stairs. But the initial stretch is steep making you tired at the beginning itself. After half an hour of the climb, I looked around only to be amazed by the view of the hills on the other side. After some distance, we came to an open area where there was a hut-like structure. If it’s sunny you can take rest at this place but we were lucky to be trekking on a cloudy day so we kept moving.

After this stretch, there are no supporting railings or stairs for some distance. This stretch is short yet can become very tricky during the rainy season. You will find monkeys attacking from this point onwards. Make sure you don’t carry any food items in hand.

Cave Temple: Finally, we reached the sacred dark cave which is surrounded by a huge group of rocks. As we entered, we could feel the coolness embracing us. The place looked like a miracle, because of the refreshing atmosphere hid inside the caves against the harsh sun rays outside.

This area is dominated by monkeys, be careful with it.  The best part of the temple is about to be experienced here.  The priests splashed the cool water of on our heads. The tiredness of climbing the hill just disappeared and soothed our body. They applied huge Vibuthi on our forehead, as the practice of Shiva followers.  We bowed to the Lord Siddeshwara with devotion. The idol is small and crowned by a 5 hooded snake. There were small idols of Basava, Ganapati and many more of Shaiva cult. Don’t miss the fun: Most of the devotees return from this point but the best part of the trek lies beyond the temple. We took the right turn which leads to the summit of the hill. I asked shopkeeper about the summit but he didn’t seem to respond positively.

Trek to the peak: Few members of the group had already started walking towards the peak. The trail is rough and not much inclined. There were few tricky parts but easily manageable (be careful in rainy season).  We encountered few caves which act as a resting point during summer time. Within, 30 to 40mins first sight of the peak was revealed. A sense of satisfaction and a joy of accomplishment made us smile. We just turned all around to capture the beautiful views. The blue skies and many lofty mountains in a series. The changing shadows cast by the clouds on the mountains was sublime to watch. I couldn’t resist myself from taking Timelapse which turned out to be fantastic. Many group photos to follow and portraits and posing. It was all fun and spend a great time with the group.

About Siddara Betta

Renowned for its trekking trails, religious significance, and medicinal plants, Siddara Betta is a captivating mountain retreat located near Koratagere in the Tumkur district.  

In the Kannada language, Siddara betta translates to “Hill of Saints.”. It’s due to the numerous caves in Siddara Betta that are believed to be where Hindu saints have found solace in meditation. The number of caves gives you the opportunity to unravel the mysteries of rocky formations. 

Trekking 

Standing at 1700 feet , it’s a quite popular place among nature enthusiasts. The journey to the summit involves a moderate 4-kilometer trekking path. It passes through a staircase , rugged stairways, and breathtaking views of surrounding villages.

Pilgrimage Center

Siddara Betta has a natural cave temple that is dedicated to Lord Siddalingeshwara. It takes around 45 minutes to trek to reach spiritual heaven. 

Historical Fort
