Show Full Itinerary

Welcome to Halifax! Your tour starts today with a welcome meeting at 10am before you head to historic Lunenburg on the South Shore, one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore Mahone Bay and nearby Blue Rocks on a leader-led walking tour and learn about this old fishing community that’s become a hub for artists and photographers. Enjoy some free time exploring the old town centre, which is a National Historic Site of Canada. And since Lunenburg was a rum-running town in the days of Prohibition, make sure you take the time to sample of the local brews. Head back to Halifax in the late afternoon and meet later in the evening for an optional dinner if you wish.

Take a trip to famous Peggy’s Cove, a picturesque fishing village that is one of the most photographed places in all of Canada – for good reason! Rocky outcrops, the crashing Atlantic, colourful fishing boats and that famous red-tipped lighthouse are what you expect to see on Maritimes postcards. Follow your local leader along the Peggy’s Cove Rock Walk, which meanders along the barren coastline that glaciers created some 12,000 years ago. Grab lunch in the village (your own expense) – perhaps a creamy seafood chowder or fresh lobster roll.

Today you will drive from Halifax to Baddeck, but not without a stop at the excellent Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Center. Located in the heart of a development owned by Millbrook First Nation, it tells the story of the Millbrook Mi’kmaq and the important role they played and continue to play in the Maritimes. Don’t miss the gift shop which sells beautiful traditional arts and crafts. On arrival in Baddeck, relax and settle into your hotel for the next two nights.

Today offers a big day of discovery and adventure. Start with a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site to gain insight into the life and work of this inventor, scientist, and teacher who is arguably best known for inventing the telephone. Then drive along the Cabot Trail and stop for a leisurely hike within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The Skyline Trail is the park’s signature hike, which leads out to spectacular sweeping views over the sea. If it’s a nice day for driving, your leader will take you further along the Cabot Trail – a 4 hours’ drive, but with plenty of beautiful stops along the way. Enjoy a picnic lunch while you’re out along the trail before returning to Baddeck for the night.

Drive from Baddeck to Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island and the smallest provincial capital in the country. It’s the perfect destination to explore on foot when you arrive in the late afternoon. Stroll alongside the picturesque harbour or take in the leafy parks and Victorian-era streets lined with gabled houses. Tonight you may like to join your group for an optional dinner and toast your adventure.

An orientation meeting will take place at 10am this morning to welcome any new travellers joining you for the next leg of your journey, then head out with your leader for a walking tour of the town. Finish with a tasting at Upstreet Brewing – a fellow B Corp business that brews a mix of classic, seasonal and experimental craft beers. Your afternoon is free to wander on your own before regrouping in the evening for a truly special dinner. Head out along the stunning Points East Coastal Drive (approximately 45 minutes) to meet a local fisherman and enjoy a traditional lobster and mussel boil on his private property.

Drive from Charlottetown to Greenwich National Park where you will be welcomed by a Mi'kmaq Elder with a traditional smudging ceremony. Learn about the wigwam building process and other artifacts and enjoy bannock, tea and storytelling. Take time to explore Greenwich National Park before your return to Charlottetown.

After breakfast, drive to nearby Cavendish where L.M. Montgomery famously drew her inspiration for the “Anne of Green Gables” novels. Visit Green Gables Heritage Place and explore the area on a walking tour (with a focus on Anne, of course!). Then, check out the very cool Bottle Houses – a village of buildings, including a tavern, a chapel and gift shop, that are literally made out of thousands of bottles. Grab lunch in Cavendish (at your own expense) before driving onwards to the spectacular Thunder Cove Beach. Here, sandstone cliffs, sea stacks and caves make for an otherworldly landscape that most visitors to Prince Edward Island totally miss. Spend the night in the coastal city of Summerside.

Enjoy a free morning exploring Summerside on your own. You may want to check out the local museums, galleries and cultural centres, or you can just wander through the neighbourhoods of historic homes. Then get your sea legs ready! Today you’re cruising the waters of Shediac Bay on a working lobster boat with local fishers. Get a hands-on demonstration of lobster fishing and enjoy a delicious freshly caught lunch on board. After lunch, drive to Moncton and your hotel for the night.

Cross over into New Brunswick and make your way to the postcard-perfect Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. Arrive for low tide and join a naturalist guide for a walk right out onto the sea floor and get up close to the towering sandstone formations known as the Hopewell Rocks, or Flowerpot Rocks. When the tide comes in, waters in the bay can reach up to 16 metres, so a trip here is all about timing and your local leader will make sure you get the most out of your visit. In the afternoon, take a quick detour to spectacular Cap Enrage with its charming lighthouse before continuing on to explore Fundy National Park. Then it's a short drive onwards to the historic seaport city of Saint John, where you’ll stay for the night.

Your tour ends today, and you are free to leave at your leisure. Or, if you like, stick around and explore the city of Saint John and more of the Maritimes on your own.

Eastern Canada

From the multicultural provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the sandstone cliffs, sweeping sand dunes and picturesque villages of the Canadian Maritimes, our Eastern Canada tours inspire and delight.

Eastern Canada Escorted Tours

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to Eastern Canada

The lure of Eastern Canada is born of both rugged and picturesque origins... it is timeless, found in quaint fishing villages steeped in Acadian and Celtic culture, in multicultural capital cities, along dramatic seascapes where crashing tides envelop steep cliffs... throughout the pastoral beauty of the Maritime Provinces, summer or autumn...

Niagara falls, ontario, "canada's capital cities plus niagara falls" and "cruising the great lakes: chicago to toronto".

Comprised of three waterfalls – American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls – Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes; the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old. Journey to thundering Niagara Falls for a catamaran cruise near the plunging waters and misty spray of the waterfalls – getting wet is a distinct possibility – and explore the quaint Victorian village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its flower-filled, tree-lined streets.

Bay of Fundy, The Maritimes

"nova scotia and prince edward island".

Head out to the strip of land known as Digby Neck, on the Bay of Fundy, known for the highest tides on earth, the rarest whales in the world, semi-precious minerals and dinosaur fossils. It is a haven for whale- and seabird-watchers, a wonderful place to spot finback, minke and humpback whales as well as seals. And… you'll attend a presentation by a local fisherman on the history and harvesting of the world-renowned – and melt-in-your-mouth delicious – Digby Scallop at a farewell dinner.

Quebec City, Quebec

"canada's capital cities plus niagara falls".

Quebec City – the only fortified city north of Mexico – is a cultural treasure. You'll feel like you've stepped into a 17th-century European village as you stroll along Old Quebec's cobblestone streets and enjoy a taste of the royal life during your three-night stay in your château-hotel overlooking the St. Lawrence River.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

"canadian maritimes" and "nova scotia & prince edward island".

Old Town Lunenburg achieved its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it's one of the best surviving examples of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Closely tied to maritime pursuits such as shipbuilding, fishing and privateering, the 19th-century houses are often timber-built and colorfully painted. An excellent place for a guided walk.

Enjoy a leisurely day in this fascinating city. Late this evening, you and our Russian guide will board the fabled Trans-Siberian Railway for an unforgettable 2-night journey into Mongolia!  (Meals B)

A day on the Trans-Siberian Railway

Step off the train today in Ulan Ude. Once an important outpost on the tea route from China, this historic city is the religious center for Russian Buddhists. Here you’ll change trains and continue your rail journey into the vast Mongolian steppes en route to Ulaanbaatar.

Discover Mongolia

Arrive this morning in Ulaanbaatar and step off the train to meet our engaging Mongolian Trip Leader. Together you’ll make the journey to Terelj National Park, famous for its wildlife and spectacular rock formations. You’ll spend the afternoon experiencing the natural beauty of this pristine National Park and getting to know the ways of the various Mongolian ethnic groups who inhabit the region. Meet a Kazakh family of Eagle hunters and get a hands-on demonstration in how to build a Ger , a traditional Mongolian tent dwelling. Then spend the night in your own private Ger at the Guru Eco Camp . Meals L,D

Into the Gobi Desert!

After breakfast, travel back to Ulaanbaatar for your included flight to Dalanzadgad, the capital of Omnogovi Province. From here, you’ll journey through magnificent desert landscapes to Gobi Three Beauties National Park. Enjoy a guided hike through Yolyn Am Canyon and continue your exploration of the region by camel! At the local Natural History Museum, you’ll learn more about the fascinating flora and fauna of the Gobi Desert. Enjoy two unforgettable nights in a private tent at the Dream Gobi Ger Camp.  Meals B,L,D

The Flaming Cliffs

Follow in the footsteps of Roy Chapman Andrews, fondly known as “the Real Indiana Jones.”  He was an early 20 th -century explorer and adventurer who became a renowned director of the American Museum of Natural History. It was here in Bayan Zag, also known as the Flaming Cliffs, where Mr. Andrews found the first-known nest of fossilized dinosaur eggs. Before returning to your Ger camp, you’ll get to spend time with a local Nomadic family. Over a traditional bowl of tea in their Ger, you’ll gain rich insight into life here in the steppes of Mongolia. Meals B,L,D

Back to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast at camp, you’ll return to the airport in Dalanzadgad for your included flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, your city tour includes Gandantegchenlin Monastery, the center of Buddhist life and culture in Mongolia. At the city’s Natural History Museum, you’ll learn more about Mongolia’s history from the Stone Age through the time of Genghis Kahn and up to the present day. This evening’s music and dance concert of the renowned Tumen Ekh Ensemble includes traditional Mongolian throat singing and other colorful folk traditions. What travelers are saying

"On the Go Tours has provided my mom and I with an outstanding experience from start to finish. The real star of the show though was our tour guide, Omar! Omar impressed our whole group with his extremely high level of knowledge, attentiveness to the group’s needs, and overall attention to detail. It is apparent that he has built many connections throughout the country and puts a great deal of effort into showing the best of what Morocco has to offer. His passions for history, biology, music, and language specifically shine through. He speaks beautiful English and all the local languages of Berber language, Moroccan Arabic, and French (as well as others such as German!). He loves answering questions and learning more to better his tour guide skill set. On top of all that he has a great sense of humour and is quite the showman when it comes to song and dance! This trip would not have been the same without Omar. 5 stars all the way! Beautiful, culturally enriching experience!"

We're pausing our live coverage for now.

You can scroll below to catch up on the latest developments, and we'll be back with our regular coverage tomorrow.

Six people have been killed in a Russian attack on a small town in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a Ukrainian official has said.

A further eight people have been injured, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said.

Infrastructure, a shop and residential buildings in Vilniansk have also been damaged, he added.

The strike comes after five people were killed in the Kursk region of Russian due to a Ukrainian drone attack.

Two young children were also injured in the strike on the village of Gorodishche, around 73 miles (118km) from the Ukrainian border, Kursk governor Alexey Smirnov said.

Two other people were injured and were in a "serious condition" in hospital, he added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has met one of the men released from Russian captivity earlier today.

The Ukrainian president met Nariman Dzhelyal who was successfully returned home after three years in captivity.

"We will bring security to all our people and peace to Ukraine. I thank everyone who is helping. I thank Nariman for this meeting and for his strength," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Mr Dzhelyal was detained in Crimea in 2021 while serving as the first deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.

During his imprisonment, he sent several letters, Mr Zelenskyy said.

He added that in one of them he wrote: "We are fighting not only for the integrity of our territories but also for the unity of our society, our beautiful, strong nation."

US officials told Reuters news agency late last night that the Biden administration would provide Ukraine with $150m (£118.6m) worth of weapons and ammunition, including HAWK air defence interceptors and 155 millimetre artillery munitions.

The weapons aid package is expected be unveiled on Monday, the officials said.

Ukraine has urgently requested air defence support as Russia has pounded its energy facilities in recent weeks via aerial attacks.

The US began shipping HAWK interceptor missiles to Ukraine in 2022 as an upgrade to the shoulder-launched Stinger air defence missile systems - a smaller, shorter-range system.

The support package will include other munitions and equipment to support Ukraine's defence needs, the officials added.

The US has provided Ukraine with more than $50bn (£39.5bn) in military aid since 2022.

We reported earlier on the 10 Ukrainian civilians who were released from Russian captivity earlier today after years of imprisonment (see 8.49am post).

Watch them reunite with their loved ones in Kyiv's international airport in newly released footage.

A report by the Ukrainian military's centre for strategic communications has found that the country's forces have damaged or destroyed more than 30 Russian military aircraft in the first six months of 2024.

Most of the strikes against the aircraft have taken place in occupied Ukraine except for a handful of strikes over the Sea of Azov and within Russia, the centre said, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The centre did not specify what portion of these Ukrainian strikes were air defence interceptions of Russian aircraft in flight and what percentage were strikes against Russian aircraft at airfields.

The ISW said they were unable to verify the report.

But it said the downing of Russian aircraft, especially critical aircraft like the A-50 and Il-22, has temporarily constrained Russian aviation activities over occupied Ukraine, but added Ukrainian forces "have yet to be able to significantly attempt to contest the air domain".

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that Russian strikes have resulted in Ukraine losing around 80% of its thermal power and one third of its hydroelectric power.

Discussing the attack in Dnipro, Mr Zelenskyy said it was a reminder to Ukraine's allies that the country needed more air defence systems.

He said: "This is why we constantly remind all of our partners: only a sufficient amount of high quality of air defence systems, only a sufficient amount of determination from the world at large can stop Russian terror."

Kyiv has also struck back at Russia with its own attacks, which also often target energy infrastructure.

Belarus has deployed additional air defence forces to its border with Ukraine to protect "critical infrastructure facilities" due to increased Ukrainian drone activity, a Belarusian military commander has said.

Belarus, an ally of Russia, said earlier this week it had shot down a quadcopter that had illegally crossed the border from Ukraine "to collect information about the Belarusian border infrastructure".

The situation in the airspace over the border remains tense, Andrei Severinchik, commander of the Belarusian Air Defence Forces, said.

"We are ready to decisively use all available forces and means to protect our territory and the population of the Republic of Belarus from possible provocations in the airspace," he said.

Belarus' defence ministry said earlier today it had information showing Ukraine had been moving more troops, weapons and military equipment to the northern Zhytomyr region, which borders Belarus.

There was no immediate response from Ukraine.

Russian elites and oligarchs have reportedly moved from criticising the country's war effort in Ukraine to supporting it, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has reported.

Mikhail Zygar, the founder of the Russian opposition television channel TV Rain, reported that many elites who were opposed to the war in 2022 started to support the war in 2023 because they "believe Russia is prevailing".

Mr Zygar said these people made this assessment due to Russia's slow but steady battlefield gains, a persisting Ukrainian munitions disadvantage, and perceived "waning" Western security assistance to Ukraine.

One anonymous Russian oligarch who previously criticised the war reportedly told Mr Zygar that Russia must win the war otherwise "they won't allow us to live... and Russia would collapse".

The ISW said it cannot independently verify Mr Zygar's reporting but it is consistent with the institute's assessment that this section of Russian society came to heel behind Vladimir Putin in support of the war after his government intensified crackdowns against elites in the wake of the 2022 invasion.

As Russia announces it has captured a second village in 24 hours (see 12.26pm post), let's take a look at where Russia has advanced along the frontline with Ukraine.

As well as pockets of advances on the border north of Kharkiv, Russia appears to have captured areas along the length of the front, from the Donetsk region right up to the western edge of Luhansk.
