Reach for the sky

On December 7, 2019, Princess Cruises honored two pioneering women of the U.S. Space Program: Captain Kay Hire, and engineer Poppy Northcutt, who served as the godmothers, and officially named Sky Princess. Captain Hire began her 30-year NASA career as a mechanical systems engineer, helping to launch more than 40 space missions. Then, as an astronaut, she logged 700 hours in space, flew over 12 million miles, and orbited the earth 475 times. Poppy Northcutt served as the first female mission control engineer when NASA made history with its mission to the moon. When the crew of Apollo 13 became stranded in their service module, it was her team’s calculations that brought them home safely – a feat of heroism that earned the entire mission operations a Presidential Medal of Freedom Team Award.

Authentically Small Cruises

We emphatically believe that the core definition of a small ship cruise is one where guests can get off the ship away from port. While some may consider a ship with 500 or even 1,000 guests small, in reality, the logistics of operating off-vessel activities like hiking, kayaking and snorkeling require that the ship be under 250 guests.

Adventure Cruises

While every small ship cruise has a heavy dose of adventure, a growing segment can be called adventure cruises. The hallmark of an adventure cruise is a focus on off-vessel activities such as hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, camping, diving and more, with twice daily excursions. Actively explore off the ship by day in the company of expert naturalist guides. Each evening, return to your small ship for a hot shower, a glass of wine with a delicious meal and a comfortable cabin while the ship cruises to a new active location.

Expedition Cruises

Expedition cruises focus on the exploration of remote wilderness. An expedition is defined as a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose. The hallmark of an expedition cruise is a sense of exploration and scientific learning. Purpose-built expedition ships bring you to some of the most remote and pristine places on Earth. Journeys like North Pole expeditions , Falkland Islands & South Georgia cruises and Northwest Passage voyages are all examples of this growing segment of small ship cruising.

Small Luxury Cruises

If you’re looking for top-tier service, amenities and fine dining while aboard, let us point you to the best in luxury small ship cruises. Small luxury cruise ships feature suites that are often larger than other small boats, and include private balconies or floor-to-ceiling ocean views. Add to that top-rated naturalist guides with high crew-to-guest ratios and you are set up for a premium sailing experience. View our curated Galapagos luxury cruises , Alaska luxury cruises and Antarctica luxury cruises pages for an example of what to expect in our most popular destinations.

Small Ship Cruise FAQ

Whether you are new to small boat cruising or a small-ship veteran seeking to just learn more, we’ve compiled our most frequently asked questions here to inform and inspire as you explore this incredible way to travel. Read this small ship cruise FAQ to find out if your burning question is a common one, or contact one of our adventure cruise specialists anytime to ask an expert direct about cruises on small ships.

For us, the sweet spot for a small ship cruise is around 8 to 250 passengers to maintain what we feel is the true hallmark of small ship cruising: active, immersive, off-the-ship, off-the-grid travel.

Depends on who you ask, and who is traveling. We sure think so since small ships connect you with the destination better than larger ships. To learn more and find out what size ship is best for you, read our Big Ship vs. Small Ship: What Is the Difference?

Since word “best” is entirely subjective to each individual traveler’s style, amenity needs, travel group and activity level, let our experts help you narrow down the many small cruise ships sailing today. Any ship you see on the AdventureSmith Explorations website has been vetted and tested, and our team is adept at matchmaking travelers to their own “best” ship. If you want some suggestions, see the Romantic Cruises by Small Ship and our curated pages for luxury ships: Galapagos luxury cruises , Alaska luxury cruises and Antarctica luxury cruises .

Unlike larger ship cruise lines that sail worldwide, many small ship cruise lines have carved out a niche in their destination. Each of the small ship cruise lines has its own style of travel that’s best for different travelers. For instance, UnCruise Adventures offers more active adventure than most, while Lindblad Expeditions has a reputation for superior expedition leaders, many affiliated with National Geographic. Quark Expeditions has a long history of polar expeditions and Quasar Expeditions has a penchant for historic yachts in the Galapagos Islands. We work with many of the biggest and best companies in small ship cruising, as well as many smaller family-owned-and-operated vessels that are off the radar of most travelers. View our selection of the best small ship cruise lines hand picked by our experts. We pride ourselves on suggesting the best small ship cruise lines for you.

Small ship cruise travelers are interesting, engaged, active and educated people seeking meaningful up-close encounters with the wonders of nature and culture, just like you. From couples to families to solo travelers, small cruise passengers are savvy travelers who have done the research and are seeking to escape the mass tourism market for something more sustainable and rooted in a destination. They want to experience a place, not just see it!

Most likely not. We have found over the years that travelers who find and book cruises on small ships tend to be likeminded. You’ve done a lot of research to get to this point, dismissing large ships, amusement parks and resort hotels. Most other travelers have done similar research and ended up at the same conclusion: that small boat cruises suit them. Guest compatibility typically comes naturally, and you’re off the ship much more than a larger cruise ship itinerary.

Absolutely! The level of family friendliness depends on the vessel, destination and small ship cruise line, but there are lots of options to cruise with children and teenagers worldwide. We generally suggest adventure cruises for kids age six or older. Read more about our family cruises , including testimonials from our family travelers and further resources for booking a family adventure cruise.

Nearly all small ship cruise lines we partner with have at least one naturalist guide aboard, but guide counts will naturally increase with the passenger count. If you have a particular learning topic of interest, look for themed departures that bring aboard guest hosts and special programming on photography, history, marine biology, food/wine or wellness. Or look to National Geographic branded ships that bring aboard professors, authors, scientists, researchers, photographers and expedition crew that are experts in their fields.

While most small ship cruises travel close to shore or in protected waters where seasickness is not an issue, some ocean-going expedition cruises can encounter rough seas. Ocean conditions vary widely depending on the destination, season, weather, type of ship, route and many other factors. AdventureSmith’s unbiased staff experts can help you to determine if a particular small cruise itinerary is right for you, and savvy travelers can educate themselves on ways to combat seasickness by reading our comprehensive guide on How to Prevent & Treat Seasickness . Enjoying the ocean view with your eye on the horizon is one of the best tips!

Yes! We agree that the best type of small ship cruise review is a personal referral. Ask us to put you in touch with someone who has traveled to your destination with similar interests as you, or aboard the small boat cruise you are inquiring about. You can also read reviews on our trip pages; simply look for the Testimonials and Expert Review sections.

The best time to take cruises on small ships all depends on where in the world you want to go! Our team has compiled a Small Ship Cruise Calendar to assist travelers in seeing the bigger timing picture for some of our most popular destinations. If your travel dates are flexible, consider a region’s seasonality. Prices can vary considerably from the peak season, so look at early or late seasons for the most affordable pricing. River cruises can often have high- and low-water seasons you can consider. Or you may choose based on particular interest like the best time to view whales, when baby penguins are hatching or to align with the warmest water temperatures for snorkeling and swimming. View our Small Ship Cruise Guide resources for more information and inspiration by destination.

All small ship adventure cruises include off-vessel excursions with a focus on exploring the environment up close and viewing wildlife. Many of our cruise itineraries include guided light hiking and easy sea kayaking or snorkeling, and sometimes alternative activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, camping, scuba diving, skiing and even river rafting. Each and every activity is optional, and the naturalist/guides aboard every ship will help passengers to determine if an activity or excursion is right for them. A fun part of the AdventureSmith booking process is that we take your activity level into consideration before you go; our team will assess your activity interests and match you with the best adventure cruise for your travel style.

Yes, similar to traditional larger-ship cruises, you can simply book an individual cabin aboard a small ship. In fact, 75% of our travelers choose to book individual cabins this way: on a set departure. We also connect travelers in groups as small as 8 guests with charter cruises . Choose this charter option to book the entire ship and help set its route and onboard programming for the duration of your trip. Our most popular destinations for chartering your own ship include Galapagos Islands yacht charters , Mediterranean yacht charters and Alaska yacht charters .

In general, small ship cruises cost more than their big-ship cruise counterparts, but the experience is so inclusive and immersive that the dividends to you are much greater and the total costs can end up being comparable. Ultimately, how much a small cruise costs all depends on where you want to go, the size of the vessel you are on and its amenities. All cruise and land tour pricing listed on the AdventureSmith Explorations website is the cost per person , in USD, and our rates depending on the destination start at around $200-$500 per day. This price often varies based on how many persons are sharing the cabin, transfer or tour, as well as any small ship cruise deals to factor in.

Just like a hotel room, you can expect to pay more to book a cabin as a single traveler. But there are exceptions. Some small ships offer dedicated single cabins, but most ships instead have double-occupancy cabins that can be booked for dedicated single-use with a single supplement charge. This supplement is essentially a a discount on paying for the full double-occupancy cabin. In many destinations, there is the possibility of waiving the single supplement by agreeing to a “cabin share,” wherein you are paired with a fellow traveler of the same gender in a cabin. This is especially popular on Antarctica cruises , where you will often find many cabin and pricing options for single travelers.

Common inclusions with a small cruise cabin fare are onboard meals and guided activities during the itinerary. Common exclusions from the cabin fare are airfare (international or domestic), gratuities, alcoholic beverages and insurance of any kind. But there are exceptions to each of these. For example, many of our small boat cruises have included alcoholic beverages, and some of our Mediterranean cruises have nights free at ports of call so you can dine on your own off-ship. Included and excluded services vary from cruise to cruise, and are always listed in the “DETAILS” section of each itinerary listed on our website. These can be discussed further with your AdventureSmith Specialist upon booking.

Hear About Small Cruises from Our Travelers

We loved the small ship experience, with onboard staff accommodating our group's differing ages and needs. We booked our trip through AdventureSmith after reading online evaluations. So glad we did.

Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating!

That was easily one of the best vacations I've ever had. Seeing wildlife was really cool. We enjoyed seeing Sawyer Glacier, Baird Glacier, hiking and many things we would never have seen on a big cruise ship.

We loved everything about our trip. Opatija was our favorite. Every island on the cruise was amazing. We loved them all. We've always wanted to experience Croatia. This was a perfect way to see some much of it.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

The trip was awesome. When I started looking at cruises, I couldn't get the idea of the small boat and personal service out of my mind. It was well worth the extra money. So glad we didn't go on a big ship.

Please note: The primary ship(s) operating the mentioned itinerary can change from year to year, so the ship this guest cruised on may no longer be sailing this exact route.

We booked our trip through AdventureSmith after reading online evaluations. So glad we did. This was our first cruise and we wondered about booking directly through an operator versus involving an additional layer with AdventureSmith. We would do it again, as we found AdventureSmith to be definitely value added in every way. Our Adventure Specialist was endlessly helpful and patient, booking the cruise for 8 people ages 6 to 73, coming from 3 different locations, and required vegetarian and gluten free menus for several.

We loved the small ship experience, with onboard staff accommodating our group's differing ages and needs. Glaciers, Zodiacs among sea lions and eagles, whale viewing, pilot whales and great naturalists all were special.

Our fellow passengers were personable and well matched. I think the nature of the trip, with Nat Geo, attracts passengers with similar interests very well, so the group was simpatico. There were also several other children in the mix which was good for the kids in our group.

Accommodations Review

The Sea Bird is a small ship, so naturally accommodations were small, but we enjoyed the limited number of passengers and ability to know crew and staff.

Meals Review

Good variety and accommodation for special food needs of the vegetarians, small child and gluten free passengers in our group.

Crew & Guides Review

Rab, the group leader, was engaging, knowledgeable and always enthusiastic. He also was excellent at addressing individual requests. We enjoyed Kyle, the bartender, who was always welcoming and especially attentive to the 6 and 8-year-olds on our trip. The naturalists Andy and Jared were outstanding both in their expertise and their willingness to socialize with guests and answer all questions.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Our Adventure Specialist was exceptionally helpful during our rather more complicated preparations involving travelers from 3 locations and various ages and special needs. She was always available for any questions. She also successfully managed to have a lost item returned to us after the cruise. Any travel issues prior to departure were addressed by AdventureSmith expeditiously and knowledgeably. An A plus experience.

Traveler Advice

No kidding, you really do need the rubber boots! It is a temperate rain forest environment, so just bring the wet gear and know that rain or shine it will be a fabulous destination.

I brought my 11-year-old son on this trip because he had a rough year with his parents splitting up, and he has always had an obsession with penguins. Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating! My son has never learned to swim due to a severe fear of putting his face in the water, but he was so enamored of the islands that he was able to overcome his fear and learn to snorkel. Genovesa Island was a miracle of wildlife. Sea kayaking along the cliffs was wonderful, as we could see all the animals and the cliffs themselves were beautiful. Snorkeling with penguins, sea turtles, and sharks was amazing.

La Pinta was the perfect size and very comfortable. We chose La Pinta because of the size of the ship (not too big or too small), the itinerary (north islands), planned activities for kids, and the availability of a glass-bottom boat. Not a big fan of Quito, but that was a necessary stop. The recommended hotel in the old town area was wonderful.

Lots of options, all of them excellent. Staff worked very hard to accommodate my picky son's whims and were extremely respectful of my choice to be vegetarian.

The naturalists aboard La Pinta could not have been more professional or knowledgeable. We appreciated Paul sitting with us at lunch and getting to know us personally, and Dennis's enthusiasm about Charles Darwin was contagious. We enjoyed having several guides with different perspectives, but they were all phenomenal.

Nick M. was friendly, attentive, communicative, and very helpful. I handled much of it myself (transportation), but the portion handled by AdventureSmith all ran very smoothly, which was much appreciated.

Don't put it off - everyone tells me it's on their bucket list. My son wanted to see penguins, and I was not willing to travel to Antarctica so the Galapagos was the next best option.

  • La Pinta Galapagos Cruises

That was easily one of the best vacations I've ever had. Seeing wildlife was really cool. We enjoyed seeing Sawyer Glacier, Baird Glacier, hiking and many things we would never have seen on a big cruise ship. Snorkeling was a little disappointing, especially because we had to pay more for it. The visibility was not great and we really didn't see that much.

The rooms were really small but that was to be expected. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean.

The meals were excellent. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all included and we never left the table hungry.

Every crew member was professional, informative and fun. They were so knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions. They payed attention to what people wanted out of the trip. Bethany, Chris the bartender, Phil, Sarah and Paul took good care of us especially. Tucker who drove our skiff boat, the captain and the first mate were very informative as well.

Very informative. AdventureSmith helped us know what to expect and what we needed (and didn't need) to bring. Great trip and overall experience, I would recommend AdventureSmith to anyone looking for a vacation.

  • Alaska Fjords & Glaciers
  • Wilderness Discoverer

The ship was beautiful. Very comfortable. We loved being on a small ship. A small group and everyone just connected. We loved everyone on our ship.

Food was awesome. The only thing we think we'd liked to have improved, is more variety at breakfast. Maybe add some smoked salmon.

Josaphina was amazing. Great attitude, easy to understand and very knowledgeable.

Transportation Review

Picked as scheduled.

They gave us everything we needed to be prepared for our trip. Very helpful. Thank you for an awesome vacation.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. Loved the colours of the ice, the penguins (not the smell!!), seals, whales and birds. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. We chose the kayaking option, which was brilliant. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

Comfortable 3 person cabin. Very clean.

Buffet style breakfast, lunch. Dinner served, 3 choices.

All staff on the boat were friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. All the other passengers were interesting and polite. Great fun!

Good advice was well presented. Any questions were answered promptly.

  • Antarctica Air Cruise
  • Magellan Explorer

The trip was awesome. [The experience we enjoyed the most was] the day we started seeing whales spouting in the distance and the captain stopped the boat for a few hours while we watched at least 2 dozen whales. One of the whales seemed to be putting a show on for us with dives and multiple tale waves over and over. This was a sunny day in Alaska, and they brought the happy hour out to the sundeck while we watched the whales.

Alaska has been somewhere we wanted to go for some time. When I started looking at cruises, I couldn't get the idea of the small boat and personal service out of my mind. It was well worth the extra money. So glad we didn't go on a big ship.

Our room was above the engine. We didn't let it bother us, but there was some noise. We chose the least expensive of cabins, so it is understandable. The accommodations are small in the cheaper cabins, but they cleaned them every day; we weren't in the rooms except to sleep. The vessel was awesome.

Nothing could be improved, the meals were awesome.

The enthusiasm, knowledge, and professionalism of the guides were all top notch.

Passengers enjoy the Sublight Lounge onboard the Halcyon starcruiser in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser Officially Launches Today!

Jeremy Schoolfield

by Jeremy Schoolfield , Walt Disney Imagineering Communications Manager

Today marks the official launch of  Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort, and to celebrate I thought we’d take a quick photo tour through the  Halcyon  starcruiser. Come along as we journey to a galaxy far, far away thanks to the amazing work of our Disney photographers.

Guests arrive at the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal for their two-night adventure in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

You arrive for this first-of-its-kind two-night experience at the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal, where your bags and your car are whisked away as you begin this adventure.

Astromech droid SK-62O greets guests in the Atrium of the Halcyon starcruiser in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

After boarding a Launch Pod and blasting through hyperspace, you dock with the Halcyon starcruiser and step out into its main deck Atrium. Here you see some guests greeted by SK-62O, the ship’s resident astromech droid (he’s helpful in a pinch).

Halcyon starcruiser cabin in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

You’re then escorted to your cabin, which is fun to explore in its own right – especially those sleeping berths built into one of the walls and the viewport out to space.

Cruise Director Lenka Mok (left) and Captain Riyola Keevan (right) share a toast with guests in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

Once you’re settled in, it’s time to head back down to the Atrium for the ship’s muster, led by Captain Riyola Keevan (seen here on the right) and Cruise Director Lenka Mok.

The Chandrila Collection is a boutique off the Atrium of the Halcyon starcruiser where passengers can dress in galactic fashion as part of their stay at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

Following muster is a good time to do a bit more looking around – I recommend the Sublight Lounge for a nice drink or a hand of holo-sabacc, or maybe a stroll into The Chandrila Collection boutique to pick up some clothing and accessories for your voyage.

Guests may use the Star Wars: Datapad in the Play Disney Parks mobile app to deepen the immersion of their vacation experience in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

By now you should be checking your  Star Wars : Datapad through the Play Disney Parks app on your mobile device. Your itinerary updates constantly throughout your stay, so you’ll always know when it’s time for some special onboard activities like …

Passengers learn the systems of the Halcyon starcruiser from the ship’s Bridge in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

… Bridge Training …

Passengers learn the ancient art of wielding a lightsaber in the Lightsaber Training Pod onboard the Halcyon starcruiser in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

… Lightsaber Training …

Passengers enjoy the Halcyon starcruiser dining experience in the Crown of Corella Dining Room in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

… or dinner in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, featuring a spectacular musical performance by galactic superstar Gaya on the first night.

Whew … there’s a lot to take in already, and you could potentially do  all  of that in just the first few hours of your two-night journey!

We’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time, so if you’d like to learn more about  Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser, go back and check out our posts on  merchandise , the  onboard dining experience , the  bold creativity this experience represents , and how the  Halcyon  starcruiser fits into  the broader  Star Wars  narrative . For even more info, be sure to visit  starwarsgalacticstarcruiser.com .

We’re thrilled for guests to make this adventure-filled voyage that goes beyond anything Disney has created before. So as they say on the starcruiser … good journey and ta’bu e tay! (Hint: That last one means, “Cherish the moment” … fitting, don’t you think?)

Boeing's Starliner to join exclusive spacecraft club with 1st astronaut launch today

The launch will mark just the sixth time ever that NASA astronauts have broken in a brand-new spacecraft.

Illustration of Boeing's Starliner capsule in space with Earth in the background.

Update, 9 p.m. EDT:  Boeing Starliner's launch has been scrubbed due to a valve issue on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. Here is the link to our scrub story .

Boeing's Starliner capsule will join a very exclusive club today (May 6), if all goes according to plan.

A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket is set to launch Starliner and its two passengers, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station today at 10:34 p.m. EDT (0234 GMT on May 7). You can watch the action live at Space.com , courtesy of NASA.

The liftoff will kick off Crew Flight Test (CFT), a roughly 10-day shakeout cruise to the International Space Station (ISS) that will be Starliner's first-ever astronaut mission. Such crewed debuts to Earth orbit have happened just five times in American history, as NASA chief Bill Nelson noted during a press briefing on Friday (May 3).

"So, you think of it: The first time [NASA astronauts] have flown on a new spacecraft started with Mercury, then with Gemini, then with Apollo , then space shuttle, then Dragon and now Starliner," Nelson said. "So it is a historical day; it's a wonderful day."

Dragon is the capsule built by SpaceX , which, like Boeing, won a contract from NASA's Commercial Crew Program back in 2014 to carry agency astronauts to and from the ISS.

The goal was to get at least one American crewed vehicle up and running as soon as safely possible in the wake of the space shuttle 's 2011 retirement, which left NASA completely dependent on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for crewed transportation services to and from the ISS.

SpaceX launched its version of CFT, called Demo-2 , in May 2020. Elon Musk 's company has since completed seven operational astronaut missions to the station, and it's in the middle of its eighth, which launched in March . As that record shows, SpaceX has proven to be a reliable and prolific partner for NASA. But the agency is still excited to get a second American astronaut taxi online, given how complex and demanding human spaceflight is.

"This will give us that additional capability, because we always look for a backup," Nelson said.

If all goes well with CFT, Starliner could launch its first contracted, six-month crewed mission to the ISS as soon as early 2025.

—   Boeing Starliner astronauts conduct dress rehearsal ahead of May 6 launch (photos, video)

 —  Boeing's Starliner spacecraft will not fly private missions yet, officials say

CFT's launch will be historic in other ways as well. For example, it will be the first-ever astronaut liftoff for the venerable Atlas V, and the first crew-carrying mission for any member of the Atlas rocket family since May 15, 1963. On that day, an Atlas LV-3B launched Faith 7 , the final mission of the Mercury program, which sent NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper into orbit for 34 hours and 20 minutes.

Nelson also noted another special aspect of tonight's liftoff: It will mark the first time since the May 1968 launch of Apollo 7 that a crewed mission leaves Earth from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (or, in its former incarnation, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station).

Many astronaut missions have lifted off from Florida's Space Coast since then, including those flown by NASA's space shuttle and SpaceX's Dragon. But those flights all launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center , which is next door to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Astrophotographer captures stunning close-up views of sunspot region that spawned May's auroras

  • JeffCross You're article says that the Starliner will join an elite cadre of spacecraft crewed by NASA astronauts in space. It has one easy to understand but glaring error- it will not be the sixth, but the seventh. You have forgotten the Lunar Lander of the Apollo program. A total of 19 astronauts flew in it for extended periods. The odd number is the result of Apollo 13 bringing the crew of 3 back to Earth. Then there was the Skylab, that should count as a spacecraft hosting astronauts, and there is the ISS. Now, if you get more specific and state that it is the 6th spacecraft to launch NASA astronauts into orbit, the Lunar Lander did that too, tho it launched from the Moon not Earth. Reply

Princess Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

What is the newest Princess Cruises ship? If you're in the market for a Princess cruise, it's something worth knowing.

The newest Princess cruise ship is typically also the Princess ship with the most up-to-date restaurants, bars, attractions and cabins. It's the one to choose if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Princess cruise vacation.

As of this year, the newest Princess cruise ship is Sun Princess — the first of a new class of vessels for the line. It just sailed on its maiden voyage in February.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other relatively new Princess ships include Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess and Majestic Princess. All began sailing in the last seven years.

In all, Princess Cruises operates 16 vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Princess Cruises ship, Grand Princess, is 26 years old.

In general, Princess Cruises' newest ships are bigger and more venue-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of options for restaurants, bars and pool areas for your Princess cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last 10 or so years.

Related: The 4 types of Princess Cruises ships, explained

The oldest Princess cruise ships — those built in the late 1990s and early 2000s — can be as much as 30% smaller than the line's newest vessels.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship?

The newest Princess cruise ship is Sun Princess. As noted above, it just debuted in February.

Measuring 177,882 gross tons, Sun Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than any other Princess ship.

Sun Princess is the first vessel in Princess Cruises' new Sphere Class of ships and considerably bigger than the vessels in the line's last new series of ships, the Royal Class. A second ship in the Sphere Class series, Star Princess , is under construction and will debut in October 2025.

For more details on Sun Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's comprehensive first look at Sun Princess after an early sailing.

What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?

The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand Class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

There are seven Grand Class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand Class vessels are smaller than the Sphere Class and Royal Class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Sphere Class and Royal Class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren't as accessible to the bigger ships.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises

Still, the Grand Class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand Class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.

What new Princess cruise ships are coming?

Princess currently has one new cruise ship on order: Star Princess. As noted above, it's the second vessel in Princess' new Sphere Class series of ships, which for now will be made up of just two ships (Princess could order more Sphere Class ships in coming years — we'll see).

As noted above, Star Princess is scheduled to debut in October 2025. The ship was scheduled to debut earlier in 2025 but recently was delayed by several months due to construction issues.

The Sphere Class vessels are being built at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship available for booking?

Star Princess is the newest Princess cruise ship you can book right now. While the vessel isn't yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for October 2025 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2026.

What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?

The Sphere Class is the newest class of Princess ships. It'll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is already sailing.

At 177,882 tons, Sun Princess is about 22% bigger than the previous biggest ships in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it's 22% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio is greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

Related: Everything to know about Princess cabins and suites

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, Sun Princess is also the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess hopes to draw more upmarket travelers.

In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.

What's the difference between newer and older Princess ships?

Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line's older vessels.

On the newest Princess cruise ships, the Sphere Class and Royal Class vessels, for instance, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the Royal Class ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess' oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Sphere Class and Royal Class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Sun Princess.

Note that all Princess Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Princess vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

A Kentucky family’s $15,000 Carnival Cruise vacation they had been planning for a year was canceled just two days before the ship was set to sail after they accidentally shared their booking number online in a case of identity theft.

Tiffany Banks was devastated to learn that her trip aboard the Carnival Celebration ship with her husband and their four kids was canceled without her knowledge the day before the family was going to fly to Florida to leave on the boat.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

Tiffany Banks

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room — the Excel Presidential Suite — through the online system.

The mom and nurse practitioner said she went into “a full-blown panic” and she and her four kids were all in tears.

“We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights,” she said in a May 12 TikTok video.

Banks said she never canceled the trip and wondered if it was a system glitch.

Carnival said the room they had booked was now reserved by another customer and offered the family two interior rooms — the cheapest on the ship — instead, but the mom did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

Carnival also refused to offer a full refund as its cancellation policy states that no money will be returned within 15 days of the cruise date.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyway, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

They instead stayed at an Airbnb in the Sunshine State, hoping to make the best of their change of plans while the mom shared frustrating updates on TikTok.

In one clip, she responded to “haters” who accused her of hiding things or not sharing the full story.

“I’m an open book. I talk too much. I give out too much information — that’s just me naturally,” she said in remarks that would become an ironic prediction of what was to come in the saga.

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship's largest room -- the Excel Presidential Suite -- through the online system.

A few days later, Carnival called Banks back with an explanation of how her long-awaited cruise trip was canned.

The cruise line told Banks that she was the “victim of a form of identity theft” but that there was no security breach on Carnival’s part, according to a recording of the call she shared on TikTok.

Banks and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number when posting a screenshot of an email with the countdown to their vacation on Facebook a few weeks out, according to the clip.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyways, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

The same day they posted the booking number on Facebook, someone created an online Carnival account and added the number to their profile.

Then, 48 hours before the cruise sail date, the person canceled the family’s entire cabin booking, the Carnival rep told Banks in the recording.

Banks said Carnival told her that it believes the IP address of the person who canceled was in British Columbia but it was unable to get an identity of the fraudster.

The company offered her future cruise credit for $10,404 contingent on the mom posting on social media “something to the effect of Carnival has now resolved the issue.”

But Banks said she wasn’t interested and questioned the ease with which someone was able to take over her booking with no verification process.

“We’re not sailing with Carnival ever again,” she said.

The Post reached out to Carnival but did not immediately receive a response.

Winter in Antarctica is exceptionally cold. This is when the sea ice begins to melt, allowing ships to cruise through its immaculate waters.

What destinations will I visit on an Antarctica cruise?

Our Antarctica cruises not only take in this extraordinary continent but also visit two fascinating archipelagos. Little islands with big tales to tell, South Georgia Island is one of the most unique and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth and the Falkland Islands offer up stunning natural beauty, complete with an intriguing history.

What is Antarctica?

Encompassing an area of 5.5 million square miles, almost twice the size of Australia and home to 90% of all ice on Earth, it soon becomes clear why Antarctica is labeled the “the land of snow and ice”. One of the least explored continents, and laying claim to be the coldest, windiest and driest on Earth, no humans permanently reside here.

If you suffer from seasickness, please consult your Medical Practitioner before your cruise and always carry the recommended preventative medications. Our resident medical team can assist you with additional medication and services if required, with any relevant payments charged to your on board account.

Are children welcome on board?

Luxury expedition-style cruising is not recommended for children under 12. Guests under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and must share their accommodation with an adult. No children's programs or babysitting services are available on board.

Are credit cards accepted?

Many locations accept major credit cards, including Eurocard, MasterCard, and Visa, and these can be used in some shops, hotels, and restaurants. Does Scenic cover tipping and gratuities?

Yes, tipping and gratuities for drivers, local guides, porters, and waiting staff are included in the total price of your holiday. Please note, tipping is not included for meals, drinks, taxis and transfers outside your itinerary and only applies to on board services. We’d recommend tipping 10-15% in restaurants (unless a service charge has already been applied) and 10-15% on taxi meters. As a rule, always pre-negotiate taxi fares before agreeing to travel.

Is it easy to exchange cash?

Cash or traveler’s checkes can be exchanged easily at hotels, banks or designated exchange bureaus. It’s also possible to buy small amounts of local currency on board your ship for a fee. For the best exchange rate, we’d recommend exchanging money before you travel.

Is porterage included?

Handling and porterage of your luggage (as per the luggage allowance) is included in your cruise or tour. Should you wish to carry bags beyond this allowance, porterage of these items may be charged or you may be responsible for handling the baggage yourself.

What currency do I need to take?

Most countries visited during a Scenic river cruise use the Euro, but some nations have retained their own currency; these include Scandinavian nations, Switzerland and the Eastern European States. For small purchases made on land or in small towns, we’d recommend carrying some local currency as ATMs or credit card facilities may not be available. When booking an ocean voyage or land journey, our experienced Reservations Team will be able to advise on the local currency for the destination you're traveling to.

We welcome passengers with medical conditions or disabilities and can provide mobility provisions when notified in writing of a person's needs before boarding. Family’s $15,000 cruise ship vacation canceled two days before after making brutal mistake in social media post

Family’s $15,000 cruise ship vacation canceled two days before after making brutal mistake in social media post

A kentucky family had the worst holiday after their $15,000 cruise ship was cancelled after a simple mistake on facebook.

Gerrard Kaonga

Gerrard Kaonga

This sounds like one of the worst holiday experiences ever...

A family from Kentucky seemed to have the holiday from hell after making one small error.

Mother Tiffany Banks had planned to enjoy a Carnival Cruise vacation with her four children and husband but it didn’t go as expected. Not at all.

Explaining in a series of TikTok videos, Banks explained her shock at discovering what went wrong.

A representative told her that she had cancelled the $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room, the Excel Presidential Suite, through the online system. (thathippiedoc/TikTok)

Two days before the family was set to fly to Florida to board the cruise ship, without her knowledge, the booking was cancelled.

To make matters worse, the holiday had already been paid in full. Ouch.

Banks was sent an email about the off-ship excursion cancellations and called the company to investigate.

A representative told her that she had cancelled the $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room, the Excel Presidential Suite, through the online system.

Just like anyone else, Banks went into panic mode, wracking her brains trying to figure out what had happened.

Speaking on her TikTok social media page, thathippiedoc, she said she and her kids broke down in tears.

She added: “We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation, including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights.

She insisted she hadn’t cancelled and hoped for the best, that it was simply a glitch in the system.

Carnival said that her room was already reserved by another customer and offered her another room, the cheapest on the ship according to Banks, who did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

The company also refused to issue a refund and insisted it was against their cancellation policy they said no money will be returned within 15 days or less of the cruise date.

Hoping for the absolute best the family flew to Miami anyway hoping to board the ship but the ship sailed off without them.

Explaining on a series of TikTok videos, Banks explained her shock at finding what went wrong. (TikTok/thathippiedoc)

It wasn’t until later that Banks discovered she had been a victim of a type of identity theft as she and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number on Facebook when they posted a screenshot of an email a few weeks back.

The same day that it was posted, someone made a Carnival account and added the number to their profile. Then two days before the cruise departed, the person cancelled the entire booking.

The person hasn’t yet been identified and despite being offered another trip by the company, Banks said she and her family will never be using the cruise ship company again.

A Carnival Cruise spokesperson told LADbible Group: "While we are not going to comment on any specific guest complaint or incident, it is never a good idea to post personal information about your travel plans, including a confirmation number for a booking, which could allow a bad actor or identify thief to use that information in inappropriate or even illegal ways.
