With music in his DNA

With SPB in my family, I had a natural liking for music. Right from the age of seven, I wanted to become a music composer,” explains SP Abhishek, who has now completed ten years in the music industry. Learning Hindustani from Kuldeep Sagar and Carnatic from Binny Krishna Kumar, Abhishek is said to have begun composing his own music at high school, after which he forayed into the industry by composing for a few short films and jingles for Suriyan FM. His life took a turn when his father passed away. “My life changed overnight. It was a do or die scenario that moulded me into a multi-tasker,” he remembers.

On being asked about his debut music composition for the movie Meiazhagi, he recounts, “I never thought I was ready for it. My uncle (SPB) was surprised to hear a melodious composition from me in my debut film.”

Explaining that dubbing for the middle-aged hero in Slumdog Millionaire and for Kamal’s son in Uttama Villain (Telugu) was a great learning experience, he says, “Dubbing is just a hobby for me.”

Talking about the SPB 50 World Tour, he beams, “Touring around fourteen places in the world to celebrate SPB’s contribution to music was memorable.” Despite being in close quarters with the SPB himself, “I don’t believe the singer in me,” he quips.

Out of excessive adulation for ARR, he explains, “I worship Rahman — I grew up listening to his music which has healing powers.” And the young musician is dreaming to work with his idol one day.

“For me, all work is important as I learn something new from it,” he says, adding, “My mother has never stopped me from taking my career decisions. It’s her constant support that keeps me going.”

Padma Bhushan Sri. SP BalaSubrahmanyam has completed 50 years in the film industry. On this occasion, "SPB 50 Musical World Tour" was planned. In Bay Area this event was organized by Bay Area Telugu Association (BATA), People Media Factory, and IBridge Inc, in San Jose, California.

Grand sponsor for the event was CalHomes – Ramana Reddy, event was Powered by Googain and Ravi Tax Services. Other sponsors include Shalimar Indian Cuisine (Food Sponsor), Trinethra Indian Market (Gold Sponsor), ChimataMusic.com. Media Partners were Virijallu, KLOK 1170 AM, Bolly 92.3 FM, Telugu Times, and U’N’ME Entertainments.

The Organizers have taken much care in stage presentation and throughout the show Balu's nostalgic pictures were displayed on the backdrop screen. The concert started off with the introduction of all 10 musicians, Chinna and Praveen on Key Board; Ravi Sankar on Flute; Swamy on Rhythm pads; Caleb on Bass Guitar; Venu on Tabla), Arun on Drums; Suresh on Tabla; Naveen on Key Board; Mangal Raj on Lead Guitar.

Singers: Sri. S.P. BalaSubrahmanyam, Chinna Kuyal K.S. Chitra, S.P. Sailaja & S.P. Charan along with the upcoming young singers such as Sai Charan, SP Abhishek, Swagatha and Latha. SP Charan explained the concept of the "SPB 50" & thanked all the S.P Fan’s worldwide in making it a grand success and memorable one. Tickets for the musical extravaganza were almost soldout well in advance and the auditorium was fully packed with music lovers.

Vijaya Aasuri (BATA Advisor) welcomed S.P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB) onto the stage thanking him for giving BATA an opportunity to host this memorable concert. Audience have welcomed SPB onto the stage with thunderous applauses and standing ovation. In his introductory speech, SPB thanked BATA, People Media Factory, and IBridge for hosting his team and he always enjoys coming to the Bay Area because of audience’s love and encouragement that they have been receiving. During the program, BATA team has felicitated S.P. Balu. During the felicitation, all audiences have sung “Ide Paata Prati Chota Ilage Paadukuntaanu..” as a respect to SPB. SPB was pleasantly surprised with this gesture and thanked all the audience for their love.

Balu thanked his mentor S.P. Kodanda pani and also the audience for showering affection on him for the last 50 years. He then sang pallavi’s of few chart busters songs such as O ChinnaDaana (Nenante Nene), E Divilo virisina Parijathamo (Kanne Vayyasu), Charana kinkiNulu (chelleli kaapuram) and he explained how he got recognition with two mile stones in his singing career E divilO virisina (Music by Sathyam) and SankarAbharaNam (Music by Mama KVM)

The auditorium reverberated with claps from the audience though out the song!! 10. Lipi lEni kanTi Basha (Charan, Sailaja) from Sreevariki Premalekha. Balu said that there is always a boon behind a bane (prati Sapam venaka oka varam vuntundi). Otherwise how he could present all these wonderful gems by great music directors like Ramesh Naidu, MSV, Mama “KVM”, Sathyam & Chakravarti and others in his shows.

SPB 50 World Tour: Tamil Music composer Iliayaraja calls in the lawyers

S.P Balasubramaniam & Ilayaraja, two legendary icons in the South Indian music industry are about to enter a dispute which could change the future of Indian music.

S.P. Balasubramaniam is a renowned, award winning, South Indian playback singer who is currently celebrating his 50th anniversary in the Indian music industry with a world tour. SPB 50 Grand World tour began in 2016 and so far concerts have been conducted in major international cities including Toronto, Moscow, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore & Dubai.

The American leg of the tour started on the 11th March in Seattle, followed by Los Angeles on the 12th March 2017. There are a further 12 concerts to be conducted in America, home to a large South Indian (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalee & Kannada) diaspora.

Award winning, South Indian music composer Iliayaraja who is credited with composing many of the hit songs sung by S.P Balasubramaiam, has instructed his lawyers to seek compensation should his compositions be performed at future concerts.

In a statement published via S.P.B’s Facebook page on Saturday 18th March 2017, the S.P.B shared the following.

Dear all, Greetings from US. Had great shows in Seattle and LA last weekend. Grateful for the love you all showered upon us and the profesdional way the organizers conducted the shows. Couple of days back, an Attorney representing Shri.Iliaya Raja, sent legal notices to me, Smt.Chithra, Charan, organisers of the concerts in different cities and the managements of all the venues, which says that we are not supposed to perform compositions of Shri.Iliayaraja without his permission, if so, it is breaking the copyright law and have to pay huge financial penalities and face legal action. Let me say, I am ignorant of these legalities. My Son designed this world tour and wekick started this SPB50 conncert tour in August in Toranto, then we performed in Russia, Srilanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and did lots of shows in India too. I did not get any feelers from Shri. Raja’s office at that time. I dont know why now when we started our US tour. As I said earlier, I am ignorant of the law. If it is a law, so be it and I obey it. In these circumstances, our troupe can not perform Isaijnani’s compositions from to day. But the show should happen.By God’s grace I have sung lots of other composer’s songs too which we will present. Hope you all will bless our concerts as usual. I am always grateful for your love and affection. I only request you all not to have any harsh opinions and discussions regarding this. If this is the design of God, I obey it with reverence. Sarvejanah Sukhinobhavanthu.
