How to apply for a visa to come to the UK

Choose a visa.

You may need a visa to come to the UK to study, work, visit or join family.

There are different visas depending on:

• where you come from
• why you want to come to the UK
• how long you want to stay for
• your personal circumstances and skills

Before you apply, you must check if you need a visa and what type you need. Depending on your nationality, you might not need a visa to visit or transit through the UK.

Your application must be approved before you travel.

You do not need to apply for a visa if you’re an Irish citizen.

If you want to visit the UK

Apply for a Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK for up to 6 months. For example:

• for a holiday or to see family and friends
• for a business trip or meeting
• to do a short course of study

You must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK to get married or register a civil partnership.

If you have a visitor visa you cannot take a job in the UK.

If you’re travelling through the UK

You might need a visa if you’re travelling through the UK on your way to another country, for example if you have a layover between flights.

Apply for a visa to travel through the UK .

If you want to study in the UK

Your course length, type and place of study affect which visa to apply for.

A Standard Visitor visa lets you do a short course of study that lasts no longer than 6 months.

A Short-term study visa lets you come to the UK to study an English language course that is over 6 months and up to 11 months.

A Student visa is usually for a longer course. You must be sponsored by a licensed college or university and have a confirmed place. On this visa, you may be able to do some work.

A Child Student visa is for 4 to 17 year olds who want to study at an independent school. If you’re 16 or over, this visa lets you do some work.

If you want to work in the UK

You can work in the UK on a short or long-term basis with a work visa. There are many types of work visa .

The visa you need depends upon:

• your skills and qualifications
• if you have a job offer and sponsorship
• if you want to bring your family with you
• what you’ll be doing - for example sporting, charitable or religious work

You can set up a business with an Innovator Founder visa .

If you want to join family in the UK

If you’re a spouse, partner or family member of someone who has British citizenship or settlement in the UK, you can apply for a family visa to join them. They may need to show that they can support you financially.

You may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain ( ILR ) after a set amount of time living in the UK.

If your family member is in the UK on a visa

You may be able to apply for a visa to join a family member who’s in the UK on a visa. They must be either:

• your spouse or partner
• your parent if you’re 18 or under

Check what visa you’ll need to join them.

Family reunion visas for refugees

If you were separated from your partner or child when you were forced to leave your country, they can apply to join you in the UK.

Your family members can apply if you have been given asylum or 5 years’ humanitarian protection, and not have British citizenship.

If your family member is from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

You can apply for a free EU Settlement Scheme family permit to come to the UK if you have a close family member who:

• was living in the UK by 31 December 2020
• has pre-settled or settled status
• you had a relationship with by 31 December 2020 (unless you’re applying for a child who was born or adopted after this date)

Close family members include your spouse or civil partner, child, grandchild, parent or grandparent.

A family permit lets you live, work and study in the UK for up to 6 months. You can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to stay in the UK after your family permit expires. You usually need to apply within 3 months of arriving in the UK.

Other ways to get permission to live in the UK

If you’re from the eu, switzerland, norway, iceland or liechtenstein.

If you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you may be able to apply to the free EU Settlement Scheme instead of applying for a visa. The deadline to apply was 30 June 2021, but you can still apply if you can show reasonable grounds for the delay in applying.

Check if you can still apply to the EU Settlement Scheme .

You can only apply from outside the UK if you have a valid passport or national identity card with a biometric chip.

Commonwealth citizens

You can apply for an Ancestry visa to work in the UK if you have a British grandparent and meet other eligibility criteria.

You may have right of abode to live in the UK.

If you’re a Commonwealth citizen and cannot prove your right to be in the UK, read about the Windrush scheme .

Returning residents

You’ll need to apply for a returning resident visa to come back to the UK if one of the following is true:

you had indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme (‘settled status’) and left the UK for more than 5 continuous years (or 4 continuous years if you’re a Swiss citizen or their family member)

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

There may be another visa that’s right for you based on your circumstances. Check if you need a visa and what other visas you’re eligible for.

Successful tour to Switzerland and Paris.

We travelled by Star Tours to Switzerland and Paris from 10th May to 20th May, 2024. Mr Aman Davda was our tour guide, a very Conscientious and Caring person. Although our group people ranged from 9 months old baby to 70 years old adult, Aman was ever Ready and Helpful to anyone, anytime in any inconvenience. Moreover I found him very Knowledgeable and Well informed person having knowledge about different places and it's history. A very Prompt and Patient guide,to answer any queries of the tourists to their satisfaction. I recommend Mr.Aman Davda,a very Caring and Concerning person as a tour guide. I shouldn't forget our Tour drivers Mr. Daniel and Mr. Tony who drove us very safely to our destinations. Thanks Star Tours, and would certainly recommend it to others.

Our tour guide Aman made our tour a memorable one .. He is extremely patient, knowledgeable and helpful too. He is a passionate person who loves his work and it was seen obvious , during our trip . Majestic Europe Trip

We took Majestic Europe trip. We were skeptical about on a bus for 14 days with strangers. But we had best experiences because of the tour manger Ramakanth and Drivers Shaun and Dirius. Excellent Europe trip

Trip planning was very good, every day was planned perfectly, hotels were excellent, food provided was also good. The main thing about trip is managing every day plan as per schedule taking all 50 people together is really challenging. Rishi did that job exceeding expectations. He used to anticipate problems that might be faced by people and was resolving in time, this really helped to follow all planned venues. Our coach captain Paul is very nice person and his driving skills are excellent Thanks for organizing such a wonderful trip.

We first time traveled in a group tours. It was a wonderful & pleasant experience. Our tour guide Mr. Chirag was great. He was very friendly & explaining everything in detail & giving us all information regarding sights seeing with perfect spot for photography. We are swaminarayan & our lunch and dinner arrangements were unbelievable. Our coach captain Mr. Lika and Dan were very nice, friendly & helpful for loading and unloading begs . Star tour & Mr Chirag really deserved five stars in everything . We strongly recommend star tours for Europe vacation.

Star Tours and their agent are doing…

Star Tours and their agent are doing wrong with their clients. Once they take money they give 2nd and 3rd category services and below our dignity. Even after raising a query they didn't bother to resolve and never corrected . They are non cooperative and arrogant in the things. They surely compromise our comfort for their profit and cost cutting.

I had done my first 6 days trip in star tours completed on 23-may 2024. It’s good experience and got good support and arrangements from trip manager( Vinay) and coach captain. Thank you. Note : please arrange and make confirm first-aid box in coach and hotels for emergencies.

Super experience

Great experience without any hardship and it was well planned and executed by your guide very much appreciated. The only item in the itenary was collecting additional amount for boat ride €12 is not correct. Otherwise it is very good trip.

First time traveling through the tour…

First time traveling through the tour company. It was a wonderful experience with Star Tour. Well well-organized tour. Clean and fresh coach. Food and break times are well planned. Rishi is a star of the tour. Provided information about attractions. His planning and pleasant interactions with everyone gave us a homely feeling. Thanks to Captain Paul for the safe driving and for helping us to load and unload our luggage. Just a suggestion… As sometimes during long hours of journey kids get restless. Can you provide games or entertainment systems for them ( also with time limits😜) or wifi on board 😅

Good Scotland tour

Good Scotland tour Very good and professional tour company to visit you chosen destination. I have been with them to Europe and it was amazingly good, but Scotland tour was really good. Good hotel , good tour managers , good coach and good food. Food was awesome and provided proper Jain food what we required. Firangi , Indian by nature was really very good. Star Tours and their agent are doing…

Star Tours and their agent are doing wrong with their clients. Once they take money they give 2nd and 3rd category services and below our dignity. Even after raising a query they didn't bother to resolve and never corrected . They are non cooperative and arrogant in the things. They surely compromise our comfort for their profit and cost cutting.

I had done my first 6 days trip in star tours completed on 23-may 2024. It’s good experience and got good support and arrangements from trip manager( Vinay) and coach captain. Thank you. Note : please arrange and make confirm first-aid box in coach and hotels for emergencies.

Super experience

Great experience without any hardship and it was well planned and executed by your guide very much appreciated. The only item in the itenary was collecting additional amount for boat ride €12 is not correct. Otherwise it is very good trip.

Wonders of Europe -May 2024…

Wonders of Europe trip was exceptionally Good. Well planned and executed by Star tours team. I would like to applaud Mr.Nikhil (Tour guide) and Mr. David (Driver) for their professionalism and care shown during the trip. This trip couldn’t have been memorable without them for sure. Treasures of Europe trip

I went on a Treasures of Europe trip, organised by star tours on 13/05.The tour manager: Rishi Vaikul and driver: Paul did an amazing job to make it a memorable trip for us. First time traveling through the tour…

First time traveling through the tour company. It was a wonderful experience with Star Tour. Well well-organized tour. Clean and fresh coach. Food and break times are well planned. Rishi is a star of the tour. Provided information about attractions. His planning and pleasant interactions with everyone gave us a homely feeling. Thanks to Captain Paul for the safe driving and for helping us to load and unload our luggage. Just a suggestion… As sometimes during long hours of journey kids get restless. Can you provide games or entertainment systems for them ( also with time limits😜) or wifi on board 😅

Scotish Highland Tour May 2024

Last year we did Europe tour with star tour..it was nice experience. This year we booked Scotland tour. It is very nice and memorable experience. Good Scotland tour

Good Scotland tour Very good and professional tour company to visit you chosen destination. I have been with them to Europe and it was amazingly good, but Scotland tour was really good. Good hotel , good tour managers , good coach and good food. Food was awesome and provided proper Jain food what we required. Firangi , Indian by nature was really very good. CHRISTCHURCH - FRANZ JOSEF (TRANZALPINE TRAIN) This morning explore the Southern Alps aboard the TranzAlpine train - one of the world's great train journeys. Enjoy your train journey till the alpine village of Arthurs Pass. Then board your coach and continue on your scenic journey to Greymouth. After lunch, continue your travel south along the scenic west coast as you reach the glacier region of Franz Josef.

FRANZ JOSEF - QUEENSTOWN (LAKE WANAKA) After breakfast we check out and travel down the west coast to the south island city of Queenstown. We drive past spectacular mountain ranges, native forests and lakes to the Haast Pass - gateway to the world heritage Westland National Park. Continue around the shores of lake Hawea to reach Wanaka. Spend some time at lake Wanaka before heading towards Queenstown.

QUEENSTOWN - MILFORD SOUND WITH CRUISE Today drive through the west coast of the south island to reach Milford Sound also know as Piopiotahi. You will be amazed by the sheer beauty with its fiord's cliffs, mountainous peaks. Cascading waterfalls and jawdroping views. On arrival board the scenic cruise. Enjoy your lunch on board as you gently cruise through stunning cliffs, the inky blackness of the water and the frosty alpine peaks.

QUEENSTOWN This morning take a scenic ride in the iconic Skyline Gondola and take in the stunning views as you ride the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere. You will be carried 480 metres above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu to the top of Bob's Peak, where you’ll enjoy a spectacular 220-degree panorama with breath-taking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter and Cecil Peak and Queenstown. After lunch, day is free to leisure activities or explore the town on your own.

QUEENSTOWN - AUCKLAND - WAITOMO - ROTORUA (GLOWWORM CAVE) Early morning check out and proceed to the airport for our flight to Auckland. On arrival, drive to Waitomo to visit the famous Glowworm Cave. On arrival, take a boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 125 years of cultural and natural history. Experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glow-worms that light your way. Finally proceed to Rotorua

ROTORUA - AUCKLAND (AGRODOME & GEOTHERMAL RESERVE) After breakfast we visit the Agrodome for a New Zealand farm show featuring sheep / dog demonstrations, cow milking and an introduction to the sheep industry. Then we visit Geothermal Reserve to see the boiling mud pools, the cascading Pohutu geyser and the local Maori carvers in action. Final drive to Auckland. On arrival proceed on a short rientation tour of the city.

AUCKLAND DEPARTURE This morning, check out and proceed to the airport for your return flight back home.

The New Zealand dollar, code: NZD, is the official currency and legal tender of New Zealand. Within New Zealand, it is almost always abbreviated with the dollar sign ($), with "NZ$" sometimes used to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies.

Additional Excursions

We design our itineraries so that all the necessary excursions and places of interest are included to give the passenger the best possible holiday at an affordable price. However, often, the tour representative or local ground operator will offer passengers additional excursions that are designed to enhance the holiday experience and are not included in the tour cost.

Breakfast will be provided at the hotels. The breakfast is usually in a separate dining area of the hotel and is usually a continental breakfast, which will consist of tea, coffee, bread, cereals, fruit and yoghurt.

Passengers can choose from vegetarian, or non-vegetarian (Jain or Halal will not always be available) meals. The meals are pre-set buffet, and a choice of menu is not available. Meals will be provided with tap water only.

Dinners are usually provided within the hotel or restaurant in a separate dining facility. You should always consult your tour representative if you are not sure of what ingredients a dish contains.

Not all hotels in this tour will have air-conditioning so you should carry a small portable fan with you especially during the summer months.

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc. in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer/kettle as well as a thermos flask. Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron and hairdryer etc., as many hotel rooms may not have these facilities.

Some hotels will provide two single beds put together as a Double occupancy room, as this sort of configuration allows the hotel to use a room for multi-use, we do contract with such hotels, and you should be prepared for such eventualities.

If you use services such as the phone or mini-bar or pay TV whilst in your room, you will have to pay the hotel directly when you check out; these services are not included in your tour cost.

The maximum occupancy per room on this tour is 3 person(s) excluding infants.

Once in New Zealand, you must carry your passport with you at all times.

High Altitude

You should only make trips to high altitudes if you feel healthy. The following recommendations apply:

Advanced age is no barrier to high altitude. For blood pressure patients who are well controlled with medication, the altitude is not a concern. Asthmatics can travel to high altitudes without any problems. High-altitude air is less polluted with particles that can cause an asthma attack. Epileptics who are well controlled with medication should be able to negotiate the altitude.

Pregnant women: There may be a certain risk for pregnancy even without pre-existing diseases over 2500-3000 metres. Caution is therefore advised if in doubt, please consult your doctor in advance.

Infants: Short-term stays at the mountain tops are unproblematic. Infants and young children are often unable to equalise pressure during descent and are therefore increasingly at risk of ear irritation. Regular swallowing (drinking, sucking on a bottle) during the descent can prevent the occurrence of irritation.

Because children can chill faster than adults, always pay attention to sufficient protection from the cold at high altitude. Sunglasses and a good sunscreen are necessary on the glaciers!

High altitude visits not recommended for:

Lung and heart patients who are already short of breath while at rest or when climbing stairs are advised not to stay at high altitude. Patients with angina pectoris or severely impaired performance with heart enlargement and heart failure should not visit high altitude. Coronary artery disease (angina pectoris) and heart enlargement with medical therapy should not visit high altitude. Patients with a pronounced risk profile for cardiovascular disease (smoker + high blood pressure + diabetes + high blood fats + overweight + occasional chest pain) should consult the doctor before visiting high altitude.

Do not stay at high altitude after having striated muscles or a stroke.

Pick up and Drop off points & Times

Passengers should arrive at the airport where flights are done by Star Tours at the allocated time. If you are doing your own flights, then you will need to meet the tour rep directly at the arrival terminal at the destination.

You should always follow the protocol for flights as set out by the airline. You should check the board at the airport for any flight delays, change of gate number or any other useful information provided by the airline.

Visas & Passports

British passport holders can enter New Zealand as a visitor for up to 6 months on arrival without a visa, provided you can satisfy an Immigration Officer that you meet the requirements of the immigration rules. Visitors must have an onward ticket.New Zealand’s immigration rules are strict, particularly regarding employment. Visitors cannot work in New Zealand.

All other nationals should check with the relevant embassy.

Weather 

New Zealand has a largely temperate climate. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as – 10°C in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and abundant sunshine.

Wheelchairs

We will accept lightweight manual wheelchair for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the vehicle. It is also essential that a family member is also on tour to push the wheelchair. Star Tour’s will also request hotels for suitably equipped rooms; however, this is only on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed.

For us to request a wheelchair for you with the airline, this request should be made to us in writing at the time of booking. The allocation of the wheelchair will be at the discretion of the airline/airport.
