The figure will include multiple hands, a 2401-era Starfleet phaser, and a bottle of Chateau Picard wine as accessories, and this edition of Picard will arrive clad in his  Picard Season 3 jacket, pants, and boots — and with his unique Admiral’s badge.

From EXO-6’s official announcement:

This 1:6-scale figure re-creates this iconic character in exquisite 1:6 detail. Standing approximately 11 inches tall, every element, from his 24th century jacket to his custom black boots, is authentically reproduced. The original portrait sculpt of Patrick Stewart has an authentic, hand-painted likeness.   The EXO-6 Picard 1:6 Scale Articulated Figure includes:   – Fully Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple dynamic poses, approximately 28 cm tall.   – Realistic Portrait: Lovingly rendered by a top artist, this excellent likeness of Patrick Stewart as jean-Luc Picard is specially hand-painted.   – 24th Century Outfit: With research assisted by Costume Designer Michael Crow, this clothing set matches the onscreen costume as seen in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. Including the jacket, pants and trousers – all matched to the original costume. An authentically scaled communicator badge is permanently affixed to the jacket. – Boots: Plastic boots sculpted to match the cut and style of the original footwear.   – Display Base: A hexagonal display base featuring the transporter pad will provide additional support for the figure. Two different inserts for the floor of the base can represent the transporter pad or the center of the transporter array.

The new Admiral Picard figure is up for preorder at EXO-6’s website today for a price of $190, and is expected to ship to collectors in late 2023.

While other third-party retailers will likely list the figure in the coming days, the fastest way to get the completed Admiral Picard figure once out of manufacturing is to order through EXO-6 directly.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Producers Urge Fans To Be Patient Waiting For Season 2 On Netflix

Last fall, when Netflix announced they were picking up the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy after it had been removed from Paramount+, fans were elated. They also celebrated the worldwide streaming re-release of the first season on Christmas Day. Netflix confirmed they would release the second season in 2024. As the wait continues, producers are urging fans to remain patient.

Season 2 is “worth the wait”

It has now been around five months since the Netflix re-release of the first season of Prodigy , which originally wrapped up on Paramount+ in December 2022. Work on the second season wrapped up at the beginning of 2024. Now fans are starting to wonder how much longer they have to wait. The frustration is understandable, especially after the unexpected early release of season 2 on French TV (dubbed in French) in March.

Executive producers and showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman took to Twitter/X this week to let fans know they understand. Responding to a fan asking about season 2, they said they were “holding tight like everyone else,” but also promised the second season is “worth the wait.”

we’re holding tight just like everyone else, but we know it’s worth the wait. :) — Dan & Kevin Hageman (@brothershageman) May 20, 2024

Last week, co-executive producer Aaron Waltke also expressed a similar sentiment, posting a clip from Star Trek: Picard quoting Krinn saying “Patience brings great rewards,” adding “Words to live by.”

Season 2 is not coming in June

Even though Netflix and Paramount+ are separate streaming services, there may be coordination to avoid any overlap with the release of Star Trek content, all of which is produced by CBS Studios. The fifth season of Discovery wraps up on Paramount+ next week, on May 30th. The fifth and final season of the animated comedy  Star Trek: Lower Decks is expected later this year. Typically, new seasons of Lower Decks have arrived at the end of summer, but last year’s SAG strike delayed some of the voice acting and that might have had an impact on their release timing. Netflix just announced its lineup for June 2024 and Prodigy season 2 is not listed, so the wait will continue into the summer and possibly beyond.

The Doctor (Robert Picardo) gives the provisional cadets a briefing in image from season 2

Watching season 1 on Netflix helps

Hopefully, when the time comes, Netflix will make an effort to promote the second season of Prodigy with a publicity campaign. So far all we have is a clip released by CBS last summer (before the Netflix deal was announced). The producers have all made it clear that Netflix could commission a third season if the show performs well on its new streaming home.

One way fans can show support for the show is by watching the first season on Netflix. One of the fans behind last year’s #SaveStarTrekProdigy campaign  is rallying fellow fans around celebrating the show by watching it on Netflix this Sunday, May 26th, in an effort to show the algorithm how much love there is for the series.

We’re making May 26th a big day of celebrating #StarTrekProdigy and everything we love about it. Get your stuff ready, and we’ll show our love and get Netflix’s attention at the same time. #StarTrek #Animation #Netflix — Captain Meg 🟡🟡🟡🟡 (@Commander_Meg) May 17, 2024

Robert Picardo Says The Doctor Isn’t Just Comic Relief In ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2

Netflix just released its June line-up. No Prodigy.

I’m *hoping* that Netflix made some handshake deal with Paramount not to draw attention away from Disco S5, and that’s why we haven’t heard anything yet.

Can’t wait for this! Have enjoyed enjoy most of the modern shows with my fave being Lower Decks, but I think the writing on Prodigy has been the best.

I’m trying to maintain my patience, even though it’s gotten tougher since the French release. Even if we don’t get a June release, I did have the thought that we could at least hear something then, since that’s when they usually have their Tudum event which seems like the perfect place to show it off. Here’s hoping.

My hope is that Netflix are biding their time and working with Paramount to launch Prodigy effectively and properly, in a way it should have always been done; branded and marketed to a younger demographic and families around the world. Much in the same way the 2009 movie was launched with a barrage of campaigns and merchandising – Playmates Toys, where are you with the Prodigy toys… hopefully this break gives Netflix the chance to get Playmates Toys onboard, and actually make a go of this new series which will be the key to introducing Star Trek to kids. It has to succeed if Star Trek is to live in the minds of those who are going to shape the future. Prodigy needs to work for Star Trek to remain relevant

I hope you’re right. No one in my family are kids and we all love it, tho, so I hope EVERYONE watches it. Esp the second half of season one was excellent. I keep thinking the biggest mistake Paramount and the writers made was keeping real Janeway a surprise. I’m remember reading Kate would be back…but for a hologram with a bunch of kids and just being like, oh. Deflated. It’s not must-see for Voy fans. And then it WAS, and I enjoyed the twists and all and b/c I always give any new Trek a try I was literally there for it, but it felt like maybe people checked out before then, when not only Janeway appeared but the show got much more complex and Trek-y. I hope they can find the balance of getting the kids in there but also letting adults know this is vital, exciting Trek storytelling.

So what Happens, when a fan loses patience? Not watching it? I doubt that.

They rant on the internet

Literally two comments down someone saying they won’t watch it b/c it’s been so long. So, yes. Streamers and networks very much do lose viewers for having shows on long breaks. People forget what happened previously, people feel like the “buzz” is gone, they lose interest despite reporting having “loved” the previous season, etc.. I have actually seen multiple threads of people talking about wanting to go back to life with 22 episode per season shows on network simply b/c they want to watch the same show every week where the same thing happens every week and there are only a couple breaks in the year. Not breaks that TAKE years. I’m not talking Trek fans specifically here, but we need casuals to tune into things for them to survive. I think people are lazy, tasteless, and full of it wanting to go back to crap network tv, but it’s still a reality right now.

Kid watched season 1 and liked it. The wait between part 1-2 was too long for what they said was a kids show. Prolly why they cancelled it

I made my 4 nephews watch it. They found it boring and ‘tame’. So they all went back to playing their violent computer games.

They better still release season 2 on blu-ray as it will be the only way I can see it as I do not have netflix and never have had it and never will have it they are on my permanent boycot list for multiple reasons one for not canceling and removing all of the homophobic and transphobic stand up comedian’s crap from the service and for getting rid of password sharing and being far to expensive compared to other streaming services Plus Netflix has never had enough content I would want to watch that I don’t have on physical media or on other services

They’ve done releases of some of their shows, like Sandman (which is so good.) But not everything, ob. Fingers crossed they’ll feel like Trek has enough of a fanbase to justify producing some discs.

I have a feeling paramount home video will the ones to release it like they do with other releases and I know the dubbedPokémon anime seasons and movies that are on netflix first end up not being released by Netflix but the Pokémon company who owns and makes the show as Netflix is just the international distributor for it

Alright, I think this means I’m going to mordre la balle and watch this sucker in French.

Why? Because they politely asked you not to?

The show is zombie at this point. I doubt I’m going to even bother watching.

By all accounts, the second season is excellent and wraps up the story in a compelling way, with the possibility for more if it does well.

Did you say the same thing when TNG, DS9 or TOS were announced to be in their final seasons?

I can’t wait for S2. Prodigy and LDS are the only trek I watch now. I’m looking forward to it! Prodigy rocks!

Funny I asked about this the other day and a bit frustrating but not the end of the world. But this is the definitely the show I’m looking forward to and hopefully we will hear something soon.

And really do think it will be worth the wait! 😊

All I got from this is that “Rory The Nerd” needs to get outside and get some air. And perhaps a girlfriend?

It’s a TV show. It’ll come back. Just relax.

It’ll be canceled without passionate fans, so have a little respect.

I’m starting to feel a bit of despair, tbh. I love this show but it feels like Netflix doesn’t. When will they promote it? Give us some kind of REAL update? I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait and I’m glad they didn’t just drop it with no fanfare b/c of the French mistake…but still. I rewatched season one as soon as it came out on Netflix and it feels like forever ago.

Netflix rarely promotes their shows until the month it premieres, because they need to keep the hype going.

Season one came out on Netflix over Christmas, it hasn’t been that long.

I’d love to have the “patience” they’re asking us to have, but it’s almost 3 months since the release in France. Also I looked up the shows/movies Netflix has bothered to give us dates for, ang all the way through to the end of 2024, Prodigy is nowhere on said list. Instead it’s on a seperate list on the same web page that says shows with no date. All it says is 2024. Yeah well where halfway through 2024 and nothing. I also heard that someone said something about it being released in Spring 2024. Well…Spring is ending, and it’s not being released in June, so that was obviously either a guess, or Netflix actually said this somewhere and I haven’t been able to find it, which would mean they lied, but wouldn’t surprise me. Now, if Netflix would have at the very least shown us a 10 second clip with the logo of the show and the words “Coming Soon” like they do with pretty much most of their own productions, then i’d have been happy with that. But they didn’t, and instead have given us silence. So this “patience” they want us to have? Sorry but for me that “patience” left the building, went to Kennedy Space Center, blasted off on one of the SpaceX rockets, and then from there left for outer space (AKA it’s gone, obviously, but I figured the space reference was appropriate). Will I still watch it when it finally does drop? Yes. Will I hold my breath and still be patient? Definitely not. Instead I will be giving my attention to The Acolyte on Disney+ in June. I’d watch Prodigy Season 2 first, but of course they wont let us see it so, The Acolyte it is.

Terry Matalas Landing A Marvel Gig May Discourage Some Star Trek Fans, But It Actually Has Me Optimistic For A Picard Follow-Up

I have faith (of the heart).

Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard smiling

The news went out recently that Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas will join Paul Bettany in a WandaVision sequel series , and some Trekkies online reacted like the air was sucked out of the room. Matalas was, in the eyes of many, supposed to be the showrunner of the Picard follow-up series many fans wanted -- what is referred to as the upcoming Star Trek series Legacy . Some think now that he's moved on and the show is dead in the water. Listen, I'm not one of those people.

If anything, I think that Terry Matalas joining Marvel is the best path forward for him, and may end up ensuring his hopes for a Picard spinoff come to fruition. Here are some of the reasons I think it's great he's helping out with another franchise, and why I'm optimistic for a follow-up.

John De Lancie in Star Trek: Picard

There's No Immediate Plans For A Star Trek: Legacy Series Anyway

Despite teases from Alex Kurtzman that more Star Trek surprises are on the way, it does not appear any plans for any Picard spinoff are in those plans. In fairness, projects like the Section 31 movie and Starfleet Academy were known about and in the works ahead of Picard Season 3 ending, so it never seemed likely they'd be abandoned because of fan response.

With shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Lower Decks ending , there are gaps opening up for a Legacy series to happen. With the Wandavision sequel set for 2026, there's a chance that Terry Matalas' schedule could clear down the road to return to the franchise if an offer is thrown his way. I would assume the franchise would want him at the helm of this, given that he was largely responsible for the success of Picard 's final season. Time may be on his side here.

It is worth noting, however, that Paramount is up for sale and that means Star Trek could be under new ownership within the next couple of years, leading to questions about what will be available with a Paramount Plus subscription   Paramount+ subscription .

At that point, it's anyone's guess what plans will be prioritized for the franchise and what new Trek shows we'd see at that point. Perhaps even a new owner would find the idea of the follow-up series more appealing. Until then, though, I wouldn't get stressed about Matalas' schedule being tied up. A show could still happen.

Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Working With Marvel Will Likely Only Boost Terry Matalas' Profile

While losing Terry Matalas to Marvel for the WandaVision sequel series could mean we lose him to the franchise for a while, it only further boosts his star power in Hollywood further. While he was known for 12 Monkeys before joining Star Trek: Picard as a co-showrunner, I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear it was the House of Mouse enjoying his work in Season 3 that secured him a job as the person to tell Vision's story.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

Let's think about how quickly Star Trek brought back Michelle Yeoh after her Oscar win to make Star Trek: Section 31, and now Oscar winner Holly Hunter is in Starfleet Academy . While you can't win an Oscar for making a Marvel series for Disney+, it can come with a certain amount of attention that may make Star Trek more eager to bring him back into the fold down the line.

Sure, the downside of Matalas joining Marvel is that he may crush the gig and stick around, and perhaps that would mean a longterm exit from Star Trek .

Does that mean he should've not taken the job and held out for fans? Of course not, and no one should blame him for taking a job he knows he has rather than one he may never get.

Todd Stashwick in Star Trek: PIcard

Fan Support To See A Picard Follow-Up Remains Strong

Despite the fact that Terry Matalas told CinemaBlend very early on that Paramount didn't have a Picard follow-up in their plans , people are still very eager to see the sequel series happen. Fans are passionate enough that it's convinced stars like Ed Speleers that we'll one day see that spinoff. Of course, as the daring Jack Crusher serving as counsel to Captain Seven of Nine, he has every reason to champion the series happening.

Let's remember the fan voice can be strong. There were tons of voices speaking out to save Star Trek: Prodigy , and eventually, the series was saved by Netflix . We knew at the time it was cancelled the show was being shopped to other streamers, but if there was no one pushing to see the show, what incentive would the streamer have  had to pick it up?

If people continue to ask for Star Trek: Legacy , whoever owns the franchise in the years to come will continue to listen. If the fan interest is truly there, someone wil try and make it happen in some way. Another way to seemingly help a show in this era is stream it, because at the end of the day, the numbers don't lie when it comes to actual interest in a show.

Michael Dorn on Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

There Are Other Ways For A Legacy Spinoff To Happen

Terry Matalas might be with Marvel, but let's just make one thing clear right now, there can still be a Star Trek: Legacy series should the franchise opt to do so. It doesn't necessarily need to happen in a series either, as there are plenty of opportunity to tell the adventures of the Enterprise-G in novels as well as comics. We have great people working on these adventures, so if you're a fan, support that content as well.

Beyond that, I've been of the mind that there are quiet efforts to make a Picard follow-up as we speak. Patrick Stewart revealed that someone was writing a script for a movie for Jean-Luc Picard , and given his advanced age, I would only assume it's not going to take place before the events of the series he recently concluded. By definition, that would be a movie that is a Picard follow-up. If it isn't, there's something seriously wrong happening in the prime timeline!

It's even possible that, yes, someone else besides Terry Matalas could get a Star Trek: Legacy series rolling. Akiva Goldsman was the co-showrunner of Picard , after all, and could always leave Henry Alonso Myers to run Strange New Worlds and take the reigns on the next adventures of this cast. It would still have Matalas' prints on it, assuming the series picked up on where he left it at the end of Picard .

At the end of it all, the point I'm trying to make here is that people need to relax and not assume there's no chance of seeing a follow-up to Star Trek: Picard just because of this news. Enjoy revisiting the series in the meantime on Paramount+, and of course stick with CinemaBlend for any potential details on whether or not this dream series will happen.

One of Star Trek's Most Enduring Villains Was Created by a Paramount Exec

  • One Paramount executive thought the Borg were boring, resulting in the creation of the Borg Queen as an iconic character.
  • The Borg Queen appears in multiple Star Trek series, using manipulation and vulnerability to become a compelling villain.
  • In the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard , the Borg Queen returns with manipulative tactics to assimilate humanity through Picard's son, Jack Crusher.

The Star Trek franchise has so many iconic villains that it might be difficult for some fans to choose their favorite. Starfleet's crews are constantly encountering both new and old enemies while exploring the galaxy and meeting new civilizations. The Next Generation 's Q ( John De Lancie ) is one of the biggest tricksters in the galaxy , while Deep Space Nine 's Cardassian war criminal Gul Dukat ( Marc Alaimo ) is constantly stirring up something, and Khan Noonien Singh ( Ricardo Maltabán ) simply wants to take over the world. Time and time again, the bad guys that always seem to pop up are the Borg. Although they seem like a simple hivemind collective, their recurring presence in the franchise reveals them to be so much more, and viewers have seen what can happen when they're given their individuality or how they react under pressure. During the filming of the Next Generation movie Star Trek: First Contact , however, one Paramount executive thought a particular change was needed to give the Borg a specific face — and it was a change that made an impact on the franchise moving forward.

Star Trek: First Contact

The Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed.

Tagline Resistance is futile.

According to The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams , edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, Paramount's Jonathan Dolgen thought the Borg were boring and amounted to little more than zombie robots; they needed some kind of voice other than being mindless drones, and what's a hive without its Queen? So, screenwriter Brannon Braga did a substantial rewrite to include a character that would come to be known as the Borg Queen ( Alice Krige ). Dolgen, it's been reported, was a huge Star Trek fan and often put in his two cents about which episodes he liked, which apparently paid off big time. His suggestion spiraled into the creation of this iconic character who always has a habit of popping up when we least expect her.

Where Have We Seen the Borg Queen in Star Trek Before?

In First Contact , the Borg travel back in time to stop scientist Zefram Cochrane ( James Cromwell ) from discovering warp speed, which leads to humanity's first encounter with the Vulcans, which in turn allows for the deeper exploration of space and the eventual founding of the Federation. As a villain, the Borg Queen, played by Alice Krige in First Contact , is so different from other Borg introduced in The Next Generation ; she is sexual and emotional, making her prone to trickery and manipulation, even though she is a master at both herself. She brings a sense of vulnerability to the Borg, despite being a slinky, devious monster, which makes her the perfect foil for Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ), first in First Contact and then later on when the character reappears in Star Trek: Picard . She toys with people around her and convinces them to join her Hive. She has this special fondness for Picard and will do anything to convince him to join the collective. He's like a trophy she needs to collect for her mantle. Even though we thought she perished at the end of First Contact , she has this nasty habit of popping up again and again.

She's also a notable villain in Star Trek: Voyager , after Seven of Nine ( Jeri Ryan ) is liberated from the Borg. As a power-hungry leader obsessed with finding perfection and evolving the Borg into the ultimate race, Queen can't stand that a Borg drone has escaped and been disconnected from the Hive and does everything in her power to manipulate and bring Seven of Nine back to the collective. After Voyager blasts some severe hits on the Borg, they also deliver a neurolytic pathogen they believe kills the Borg Queen — but that's proven wrong when she appears once again in Star Trek: Picard.

'Star Trek: Picard' Introduces Another Side of the Borg Queen

The Borg Queen returns in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard (voiced by Krige and portrayed physically by Jane Edwina Seymour ) in an attempt to create a new collective after she cannibalizes her drones to sustain herself. While she's clearly become a more narcissistic, manipulative, and conniving villain with many puppets, she's especially good at getting under Picard's skin. In a new twist, she has been grooming Picard's only son, Jack Crusher ( Ed Speelers ) — who is connected to the Borg because of Picard's connection to the Hive during his brief time as Locutus — seducing him to help assimilate all humanity and become a weapon of mass destruction. Jack is the key to the Borg's evolution as an unintended consequence of what happened to Picard when he was briefly assimilated.

This looming threat to his son leads Picard on an emotional journey where he must figure out how to get Jack back before it's too late. By working with the Enterprise crewmates he's been reunited with, he also discovers what it means to be a father and how much of a connection he wants with his son. In Picard 's final season, the crew's mission becomes about rescuing Jack Crusher, who the Queen has assimilated as Vox of Borg , and finally thwarting her once and for all.

However, despite Starfleet's repeated attempts to eliminate her, the Borg Queen always returns. Her resilience and persistence are critical aspects of her character, making her a formidable and compelling antagonist. She embodies everything Starfleet opposes, presenting a constant threat and a significant element in the franchise. While her ability to endure, even after seemingly insurmountable setbacks, is a testament to her strength and tenacity, her relentless pursuit of perfection ultimately becomes her downfall as she plunders the galaxy, looking for the next race to add to her collective.

Star Trek: First Contact is available to stream on Max in the U.S.

A Guide to Star Trek's Essential Libraries and Archives

The Eternal Gallery and Archive is not the only collection dedicated to the preservation of galactic knowledge.

This article contains story details and plot points for Star Trek: Discovery's "Labyrinths."

Collage of Star Trek's libraries and archives episodic stills

StarTrek.com

Housing the largest known collection of historical and cultural artifacts in the Alpha or Beta Quadrant, the Eternal Gallery and Archive was devoted to the preservation of galactic knowledge. Whether ensuring that lost civilizations were never forgotten or storing obscure texts like Labyrinths of the Mind , the Archive acted as a neutral site where all species were welcome — as long as they obeyed the rules, of course.

Hy'Rell escores Burnham and Book through the aisles at the Eternal Gallery and Archive in 'Labyrinths'

"Labyrinths"

While Star Trek: Discovery 's " Labyrinths " showcased the Archive as the preeminent repository in local space, other Star Trek facilities have played a pivotal role in safeguarding an array of priceless antiques and information.

Flint's Gallery in the Omega System

Spock lifts his tricorder while observing a painting in Flint's Gallery in 'Requiem for Methuselah'

"Requiem for Methuselah"

We'll begin with the ornate collection owned by Flint, a 6,000-year-old being from Earth who eventually retired to Holberg 917G in the Omega system.

In Star Trek 's " Requiem for Methuselah ," Captain Kirk learned that Flint's immortality afforded him the opportunity to take on numerous names over the centuries, including Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Brahms, Merlin, and over a hundred others. His travels brought him into contact with the likes of Galileo, Socrates, and Moses, allowing him to amass his collection of rare books and artwork.

From Shakespeare's First Folio and a Gutenberg Bible to art by Sten of Marcus II and lithographs from Taranullus of Centauri VII, his own talents provided him with new additions for his gallery, as he continued to paint Leonardo da Vinci masterpieces and compose Brahm waltzes.

The Kelvin Memorial Archive in the Kelvin Timeline

Thomas Harewood pauses in front of the Kelvin Memorial Archive as he looks over his shoulder in Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness

Starfleet honored the U.S.S. Kelvin crew members who were lost during Nero's initial incursion by naming its London-based data archive the Kelvin Memorial Archive. James T. Kirk referred to the building as a library in Star Trek Into Darkness , but a bombing orchestrated by John Harrison — an alias used by Khan Noonien Singh — exposed the archive's true purpose.

Beneath the Kelvin Memorial Archive is a secret base for Section 31 in Star Trek Into Darkness

While the structure contained an abundance of publicly-available information, its cavernous lower level was dedicated to Section 31, a top-secret branch of Starfleet. Concerned that a war with the Klingons was inevitable, Section 31 was using the archive to develop defense technology and train its officers to gather intelligence on potential enemies of the Federation. Overseen by Admiral Marcus, the creation of specialized long-range photon torpedoes represented one of the facility's many innovations.

Kivas Fajo's Collection on the Jovis

Kivas Fojo leans against a table among his prized possessions in 'The Most Toys'

"The Most Toys"

Much like Flint, the Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo gathered a unique collection of priceless artifacts to display in a room aboard his vessel, the Jovis , in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's " The Most Toys ."

However, Fajo proved willing to acquire these pieces in a variety of nefarious ways, such as kidnapping Data and forcing the android to become a centerpiece in his personal museum. A vase by Mark Off-Zel of Sirrie IV, a Salvador Dali painting, a 1962 Roger Maris trading card, and the last surviving lapling were also held captive in his menagerie. Fajo prized original and one-of-a-kind items, finding his thrills by bragging about his valuable finds to his friends and fellow collectors. Sadly, Fajo's violent interests also led him to obtain four Varon-T disruptors, a gruesome weapon that delivered a painful death and had been banned by the Federation.

The Probe from Kataan

Close-up of an aged Picard who has lived Kamin's entire lifetime after encountering a probe from Kataan in 'The Inner Light'

"The Inner Light"

Our next entry is a little unorthodox, as this repository of knowledge did not possess any halls to roam or galleries to enjoy.

The Next Generation ’s " The Inner Light " introduced us to an enigmatic probe from Kataan. The object projected an unusual particle stream toward the U.S.S. Enterprise -D which incapacitated Captain Picard and permitted him to experience the life of a person from that long dead planet in a matter of minutes. Although Kataan had been destroyed when its star went supernova approximately 1,000 years earlier, Picard embodied the existence of a man named Kamin for what felt like decades to him. The probe even carried Kamin's beloved Ressikan flute within it. Preserving Kamin's perspective on Kataan's final days kept the planet's legacy alive and left an unforgettable impression on the captain.

The Starfleet Archives on Earth

Picard walks down the long aisle of the Starfleet Archives in 'Remembrance'

"Remembrance"

Star Trek: Picard 's first season debuted with " Remembrance ," an installment which found Jean-Luc Picard heading to San Francisco in order to visit the Starfleet Museum.

The Starfleet Archives resided in the building, where the quantum archive supplied the Federation to lock key relics in stasis. Picard maintained his own personal room within the archive, and his collection was overseen by an interactive holographic assistant. A wealth of items from the retired admiral's career — a Klingon bat’leth , a model of the U.S.S. Stargazer , and his famed Captain Picard Day sign — were stowed here, but Picard made the trip so that he could visit Daughter , an oil on canvas painting created by Commander Data in 2369. This excursion convinced the admiral that Dahj Asha was indeed Data's daughter.

The Fleet Museum at Athan Prime

Earth's old spacedock is retrofitted to be the Fleet Museum in Athan Prime in 'The Bounty'

"The Bounty"

While many people collect paintings and sculptures, there are others who prefer that their art is powered by a warp core.

Situated above Athan Prime, the Federation's Fleet Museum turned the old Earth Spacedock into a respected resting place for every legendary starship that survived to retire from active service. First seen in Picard 's “ The Bounty ,” the Fleet Museum provided berths for the likes of the U.S.S. Defiant , U.S.S. Voyager , a Klingon Bird-of-Prey captured by Admiral Kirk, and multiple starships bearing the name Enterprise .

In " Vōx ," Commodore La Forge revealed that he had even used the facility to rebuild and restore the U.S.S. Enterprise -D to its former glory, an enlightened endeavor which contributed to the Federation's victory over the Borg Queen.

An Archive from the D'Arsay System

The Enterprise-D stands beside an the D'Arsay System artifact in 'Masks'

"Masks"

As if the probe from Kataan was not strange enough, the U.S.S. Enterprise -D located an 87 million-year-old comet originating from the D’Arsay system in The Next Generation 's " Masks ."

An artificial object was buried within, and the device downloaded information into the ship's computer core. Believing it to be an archive from an ancient civilization, the crew watched as the library used the Enterprise 's replicators to manifest artifacts throughout the vessel. The archive connected with Data, subjugating the android to thousands of personalities. The transformation intensified when the object began to turn parts of the ship into swamps, aqueducts, living plants, and other elements from D’Arsay culture. The crew managed to avert a disaster and restore the Enterprise to its previous configuration, but Captain Picard concluded that Data had actually been given a gift in the form of being an entire civilization.

Mister Atoz's Library on Sarpeidon

The librarian Altoz faces Kirk directly at his library in Sarpeidon in 'All Our Yesterdays'

"All Our Yesterdays"

With its star set to go nova within hours, the planet Sarpeidon conducted a very unique evacuation for its entire population in Star Trek 's " All Our Yesterdays ."

A local librarian named Mister Atoz, as well as his replicas, operated an advanced library consisting of more than 20,000 tapes. Employing a device called the Atavachron, Atoz was capable of sending his fellow citizens to safety at any point in the planet’s history… so long as the Atavachron had prepared those who entered the portal by altering their cell structure and brain patterns to make life natural in Sarpeidon's past.

In a sense, the extensive library did not simply collect a comprehensive archive of the planet's history, it also allowed Sarpeidon's population to live on even after its star went nova.

Daystrom Station

Breaking into Daystrom Station, Worf, Riker, and Raffi discover the latest Soong-type android which possessed elements of Lal, B-4, Lore, and Data in 'The Bounty'

From experimental weapons to contraband from non-Federation species, Daystrom Station concealed Starfleet's most off-the-books tech from the public. During the Dominion War, Vadic and other Changeling prisoners were imprisoned at Daystrom and subjected to invasive scientific procedures. After escaping, Vadic acquired a devastating portal device from the station.

In Picard 's "The Bounty," Admiral Picard and his crew organized a break-in at Daystrom to obtain a manifest from its primary vault, an area protected by a lethal artificial intelligence. A team led by Captain Riker boarded the station and passed a host of Section 31's prized possessions, including the Genesis II Device, James T. Kirk's remains, and a genetically-modified Tribble. However, their greatest find was surely the latest Soong-type android , a highly-advanced hybrid synth which contained elements of Lal, B-4, Lore, and Data.

Memory Alpha

Spock, McCoy, and Kirk beam aboard Memory Alpha in 'The Lights of Zetar'

"The Lights of Zetar"

The Memory Alpha planetoid depicted in Star Trek 's "The Lights of Zetar" shared many objectives with the Eternal Gallery and Archive, as the Federation set the structure up as a central library to store the total cultural history and scientific knowledge of every Federation member. The library complex lacked shields, as such defenses were considered inappropriate to its academic purpose. Memory Alpha's information was intended to be made available to everyone, so a protective system did not seem necessary.

Unfortunately, a community of interstellar lifeforms wrought havoc upon the facility, burning out its memory core and killing the various scholars, researchers, and scientists who were present at the time. As it turned out, the beings were the noncorporeal remnants of the Zetar civilization whose life forces refused to accept their own deaths.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek Changed My Life Forever And Reigns As The Greatest Sci-Fi Franchise Of All Time

Star Trek cast of characters

I can't say if I fell in love with "Star Trek," or if it fell in love with me.

Like many Trekkies, I came to "Star Trek" at an early age. Throughout the 1980s, reruns of the original series would air on my local station (KCOP, channel 13 in Los Angeles), and they would serve as a periodic video backdrop to our dinnertimes. As a child, "Star Trek" was merely an action-light, horror-heavy sci-fi adventure series, and my older sister and I would gleefully yell out when Spock (Leonard Nimoy) performed his notorious Vulcan nerve pinch, or when Captain Kirk (William Shatner) got to snog an itinerant babe. We would hide our heads from the monster of the week; like many, I was terrified by the scowling face of Balok, the Ted Cassidy-voiced puppet alien from "The Corbomite Maneuver" (November 10, 1966).

Perhaps unusually for a child, I wasn't powerfully drawn to action, fights, or explosions in my entertainment. I would indeed watch the era's toyetic wartime cartoons like "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," of course, but I didn't care deeply for the characters, nor have much invested in their dramatic stakes. I had trouble taking the "oorah" action seriously, perhaps already innately understanding that the cartoon soldiers were fictional and their triumphs were only temporary; what is the meaning of a victory when the bad guys will merely return the following week?

I only realized this in retrospect, but "Star Trek" was secretly providing an antidote to the breathless mayhem oozing from every pore of my generation's childhood entertainment. It was a series that, despite bad guys, monsters, and fights, was ultimately teaching intense lessons of diplomacy and leadership. The crew of the Enterprise weren't "violent/cool," and I liked that. Finally, I realized, here was a show about pacifism.

Star Trek is a TV series about pacifism

And, yes, "Star Trek" communicated themes of pacifism. It might have been a fluke of 1960s special effects budgets, but "Star Trek" rarely showed the USS Enterprise firing off its weapons or getting into full-scale starship battles. The common playground pop culture query of "who would win in a fight?" seemed churlish with "Star Trek." Would Kirk win in a fight with, say, Han Solo? Even as a wee bairn, I had to ask why Kirk and Han Solo would be fighting in the first place. I figured Spock would merely ask Han Solo about his ship while Kirk invited him in for a meal. Power, "Star Trek" argued, wasn't derived from one's ability to dominate and overwhelm others with tactics and weapons prowess, but to negotiate, adapt, and remain friendly.

(It should be noted that I didn't see any "Star Wars" movies until I was 18 , perhaps key to my philosophical development.)

Whether "Star Trek" taught me to be a pacifist or whether I was already a pacifist can be debated, but creator Gene Roddenberry and I were definitely on the same wavelength. "Star Trek" took place in a post-war universe at a time when humans had outgrown the need to kill each other for resources, and petty political grievances were a thing of the past.

These themes became all the more explicit with the debut of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1987. I was nine, and the premiere was a big event in our household. A new "Star Trek?" And one that took place almost a century after the last one? And it's even more aggressively devoted to themes of diplomacy, multiculturalism, and pacifism? Sign me up! It was all thrilling.

It was then that I realized a glorious thing: I am a nerd, and I love it.

Star Trek is for nerds, and that's a good thing

While it may be a cliché, I still maintain that "Star Trek" is for nerds. That is, I should hasten to add, a high compliment. With the release of "Next Generation," I was given my clearest, most refreshing draft of action-antidote. I began to realize that the rest of the American viewing public longed for conflict and war and action in their entertainment, with boys my age constantly raving about the latest 'splosion-fest that evoked the word "awesome."

Meanwhile, over on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the universe had already graduated, moved into the stars, and gave up on action altogether. Oh sure, Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was handy with a phaser, Worf (Michael Dorn) could murder you with a bat'leth, and the USS Enterprise-D needed to employ some sneaky battlefield tactics to outgun the Borg (or any number of other opponents), but one always got the sense that weapons and fights were a last-ditch tactic, a formality that must be seen through before an understanding could be reached. War was to be avoided at all costs.

What's more, there were classical references! Whenever Picard quoted Shakespeare , my heart would sing. By the time I turned 13 (when NextGen had just finished its fourth season), I too was getting into Shakespeare and Picard emerged as a teacher, a fictional professor that you didn't want to disappoint. I finally realized that the nerdy sci-fi technicalities of "Star Trek," along with its classical obsessions, workplace propriety, devotion to diplomacy, multicultural mindsets, and ability to brainstorm open-minded solutions to complex problems ... these were all aspirational states. Scoop in a few ethical dilemmas — racism, euthanasia, gender politics — and "Trek" gave me everything.

Star Trek obsession is healthy, actually

Like with the original series, the peacefulness of "Next Generation" could easily have been a product of its budget; without the money to stage massive phaser battles, fights and scrapes rarely rose above the skirmish level. This, by necessity, required the show to de-emphasize violence. The makers of "NextGen" also couldn't afford to visit alien worlds regularly, forcing them to shoot on the same six or seven sets week after week.

The limitations, however, allowed Trekkies to enjoy our time on board the Enterprise. "Star Trek" is, after all, a workplace drama above anything else, and we loved seeing the characters do their jobs on an day-to-day basis. We lived with the Enterprise crew long enough that we started to get a sense of how the ship worked. That, in turn, led directly into fantasies of living in "Star Trek," knowing we could operate the machinery if asked. It also didn't seem so terrible to live in a world that was devoted to science, peace, and diplomacy.

The natural outcropping of "Star Trek" obsession is, of course, the vast extant fan community. In the 1990s, "Trek" surged in the commercial marketplace, putting out books, models, pins, toys, and comics at a volume not seen before. If you wanted to delve into deep-cut expanded universe lore, there were millions of fans to help. I was a teen. I fell in hard. I purchased uniforms and decorations and read the books. As Gowron (Robert O'Reilly) so often implored , I experienced the glory.

Star Trek is a stop-gap to adult intellectualism

That fan obsession felt healthy to me. Yes, my fellow Trekkies and I had far too many nitpicky conversations about canon and character and what movies were or weren't the best (these kinds of conversations are not unique to "Star Trek" fandom), and those weren't always the most intellectually inspired conversations. It also wasn't lost on any of us that "Star Trek" took place in a post-capitalist, non-religious utopia, and Trekkies felt the need to spend their capitalist dollars in an expression of pop worship. We were a little embarrassed by it, but we embraced the irony.

The conversations became more complex with the launch of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993. Here was a "Star Trek" series that forced its utopian characters to live in a world of religion, turbulence, and wartime suffering. Could Starfleet retain its ideals when confronted with their opposite? The answer was: not always. In a way, "Deep Space Nine" was the most practical "Star Trek" series, offering a metaphor for Trekkies constantly butting heads with the outside world.

Just as Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) had to wrangle the scheming machinations of militant Cardassians and the power-hungry preaching of corrupt Bajoran theocrats, so too did we Trekkies have to wield our optimism in the face of a greedy, war-hungry world. While others longed for violence, both real and fictional, we insisted on idealism and negotiation. Conflict resolution was better than saber-rattling. All of a sudden, my "Trek"-taught childhood optimism became a philosophical rallying cry. Maintaining peace isn't something that we can take for granted. Pacifism is an active, hammer-like philosophy we need to handle and express every day. The politics were clear.

The changing face of Star Trek fandom

By the end of the 1990s, I had left home to attend an out-of-state college, and my media consumption shifted dramatically. I fell out of "Star Trek" by necessity. It wasn't until several years later that I gathered the wherewithal — and collected the DVDs — to catch up. "Star Trek" ran hot and cold (some of those "Voyager" episodes were rough), but it was always careful to abide by its principles. Weirdly, the franchise's radical optimism couldn't survive the bleak, warmongering post-9/11 world . A series about diplomacy, reaching out to enemies, de-escalating conflicts, and non-weapons-oriented solutions wasn't welcome in the age of George W. Bush.

When J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" reboot film came out, the franchise was altered to be one of the usual action flicks that "Trek" previously eschewed. It appealed to a mass audience. Conversations began as to what constituted "real Trek," leading directly into additional conversations about gatekeeping, fandom, and franchise evolution. Is "Star Trek" for nerds, or can it appeal to — for lack of a better term — jocks?

Conversations between Trekkies in the 1990s were impassioned, but rarely caustic (at least in my experience). In 2009, however, notions of fan toxicity were more openly acknowledged among pop obsessives, and people became angrier about their obsessions. All of a sudden, I was an "old school" Trekkie.

I was 31 and okay being "old school." After all, decades had passed since "Next Generation," a series that responded to Ronald Reagan and flourished during the 1990s. Why shouldn't it adjust again? I didn't like the franchise's actioned-up response to 9/11, but I was still happy to have debates as to what "Star Trek" meant and what modern action films communicated.

"Trek" taught me to negotiate ... about "Trek."

What Star Trek means today

I am on record with my feelings about the Paramount+ era of "Star Trek," and I have frequently been rather critical . I want to go on record, however, that my criticisms are not based in misplaced nostalgia, prejudicial hate against new "Star Trek," nor a gradually closing mind (an unfortunate affliction that can sometimes strike people rounding middle age). Indeed, I have liked a great deal of the "Star Trek" shows that have debuted since 2017. I think "Star Trek: Lower Decks" perfectly balances humor and irreverence with notable "Star Trek" themes of growth and maturity. "Lower Decks" is about lower-ranking officers who have the crappiest jobs on a Starfleet vessel, and struggle to grow up when they have a twentysomething's instincts toward laziness and bad decision-making. "Star Trek" is about adults, and "Lower Decks" sees people becoming adults.

Likewise, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" returns to an episodic structure, allowing for miniature dramas and handily-packaged morality plays to be presented more cleanly than the broad arcs of "Discovery" or "Picard." I only wince at "Star Trek" when it violates its own principles or lazily falls into action-based stories that (perhaps unwittingly) glorify combat, war, and aggression. And make no mistake, these kinds of stories were always part of the franchise; they didn't start in 2017.

I love "Star Trek" deeply because of its radical, aggressive optimism. It envisions a world, and a form of entertainment, that downplays conflict. Drama and power can come from elsewhere. The future, "Trek" always declared, was going to be populated by nerds, miracle tech, and egalitarianism. And what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

War was our awkward adolescence, "Trek" said, and our adulthood is in the stars.

In 2063, Earth made its first contact with an alien species, launching the planet and its inhabitants onto an interstellar stage. The chronicles of Starfleet are collectively known as the Star Trek Universe. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, Starfleet’s flagship, Captain Jean-Luc Picard leads an elite crew on its continuing mission to boldly go where no one has gone before.
