Whatever Happened To The Cast Of Star Trek: Voyager?

Jeri Ryan, Kate Mulgrew, Ethan Phillips, and Robert Picardo

The third "Star Trek" series to air in the 1990s, "Star Trek: Voyager" was also the flagship series for the all-new Paramount television network UPN. Making its debut in January of 1995, the series saw Captain Kathryn Janeway command the state-of-the-art starship Voyager on a mission to pursue a group of Maquis rebels. However, when a phenomenon envelops them both and hurls them to the distant Delta Quadrant, Starfleet officers and Maquis terrorists become one crew on a perilous journey home.

Despite a few cast shake-ups, "Voyager" ran for seven seasons and featured a consistently stellar ensemble. The series helped launch the careers of several of its lesser-known actors, while others can count the series as the highest point in their filmography. Some walked away from Hollywood after it concluded, while a few have since made big comebacks, returning to the roles that made them famous.

Since it ended in 2001, "Voyager" has aged like fine wine, earning new fans thanks to the magic of streaming where new generations can discover it anew. Whether seeing it for the first time — or even if you're watching it for the umpteenth — you may be wondering where the cast is now. Well, recalibrate the bio-neural gel packs and prep the Delta Flyer for launch because we're here to fill you in on what's happened to the cast of "Star Trek: Voyager."

Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway

It's no secret that Kate Mulgrew wasn't the first choice to play Captain Janeway in "Star Trek: Voyager." Academy Award-nominee Geneviève Bujold was famously cast first  but filmed only a few scenes before quitting the show during the production of the series pilot, leading to Mulgrew being brought in. Today it is difficult to imagine anyone else in the role, though it's hardly Mulgrew's only iconic TV series.

Following the show's conclusion in 2001, Mulgrew took a few years off from acting, returning with a small role in the 2005 film "Perception" with Piper Perabo. After a guest appearance on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Mulgrew snagged a recurring role on "The Black Donnellys" in 2007 alongside Jonathan Tucker and Olivia Wilde and another in the short-lived NBC medical drama "Mercy" in 2009. Her return to a main cast, however, came in the Adult Swim series "NTSF:SD:SUV::," where she played an eye patch-wearing leader of an anti-terrorism task force alongside future "Star Trek" star Rebecca Romijn .

Of course, Mulgrew found a major career resurgence in 2013, starring in one of Netflix's earliest forays into original programming, "Orange is the New Black." In the series she stars as Red, an inmate at a women's prison, a role that would earn her an Emmy nomination. Mulgrew returned to "Star Trek" in 2021, voicing both Kathryn Janeway and a holographic version of the character in the Nickelodeon-produced CGI-animated series  "Star Trek: Prodigy."

Robert Beltran as Commander Chakotay

Sitting in the chair next to Captain Janeway for seven seasons was Robert Beltran as Commander Chakotay, a former Maquis first officer. Though Beltran counts his heritage as Latino, Chakotay was actually the first Native American series regular in the franchise but was sadly under-used, a fact that the actor has  commented on . Following "Star Trek: Voyager," Beltran's work on the small screen was mostly limited to guest appearances, popping up in episodes of "CSI: Miami" and "Medium" in the 2000s while filling roles in movies like "Taking Chances," "Fire Serpent," and "Manticore."

Beltran's first recurring part on TV after "Voyager" was in the series "Big Love," starring Bill Paxton and Jeanne Tripplehorn. In the series, he played Jerry Flute — another Native American — who has plans to construct a casino on a reservation. However, over the next decade, Beltran seemed to move away from acting, with a sparse handful of minor roles. He revealed on Twitter that he turned down a chance to play Chakotay one more time in the revival series "Star Trek: Picard," as he was unhappy with the part they'd written for him.

Nevertheless, Beltran did come back to join Kate Mulgrew for the animated children's series "Star Trek: Prodigy." Voicing Chakotay in his triumphant return to the franchise, the series sees the character lost in space and his former captain on a mission to find him.

Tim Russ as Lt. Tuvok

Actor Tim Russ had already made a few guest appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and even the film "Star Trek Generations" before joining the main cast of "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995. Russ became a fan-favorite as Vulcan Lt. Tuvok, who was later promoted to Lt. Commander. However, after seven seasons playing the stoic, emotionless Tuvok, Russ kept busy with a variety of different roles, mostly guest-starring in popular TV hits.

This includes guest spots in everything from "ER" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" to episodes of "Hannah Montana" and "Without a Trace." He even appeared on the big screen with a small role in "Live Free or Die Hard" in 2007, but it didn't keep him away from TV, as he also had a multi-episode appearance on the hit soap "General Hospital." That same year, Russ joined the main cast of the Christina Applegate comedy "Samantha Who?" and later began working in video games, providing voice work for "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" and "The Last of Us Part 2."

Since then, the actor has kept busy with countless roles in such as "Criminal Minds," "NCIS: New Orleans," "Supergirl," and "The Good Doctor." More recently, Russ turned up in an episode of Seth MacFarlane's "Star Trek" homage "The Orville,"  and in 2023 voiced Lucius Fox in the animated film "Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham."

Roxann Dawson as B'Elanna Torres

On "Star Trek: Voyager," the role of chief engineer was filled by Roxann Dawson who played half-Klingon/half-human B'Elanna Torres. Starting out as a Maquis rebel, she eventually becomes one of the most important members of the crew, as well as a wife and mother. Following her run on the series, Dawson had just a handful of on-screen roles, which included single episodes of "The Closer" and "Without a Trace." That's because, like her franchise cohort  Jonathan Frakes , Dawson moved behind the camera to become a director full-time.

Getting her start overseeing episodes of "Voyager" first, Dawson moved on to helm entries of "Star Trek" spin-off "Enterprise" before broadening to other shows across television. Since 2005, Dawson has directed episodes of some of the biggest hits on TV including "Lost" and "The O.C." in 2006, eight episodes of "Cold Case," a trio of "Heroes" episodes, and more.

We could go on and on rattling off the hit shows she's sat behind the camera for but among her most notable might be the David Simon HBO series "Treme" in 2011, "Hell on Wheels" with future starship captain Anson Mount, and modern masterpieces like "Bates Motel," "The Americans," and "This is Us." Her most recent work saw her return to sci-fi, helming two episodes of the Apple TV+ series "Foundation."

Garrett Wang as Ensign Harry Kim

Despite never seeing a rise in rank and perpetually remaining a low-level ensign, Harry Kim — played by Garrett Wang – often played a crucial role in defeating many of the enemies the crew would face in the Delta Quadrant. When "Star Trek: Voyager" left the airwaves, though, Wang bounced around, with his biggest role arguably coming in the 2005 Steven Spielberg-produced miniseries "Into the West." He has continued embracing his role as Ensign Kim by appearing at many fan conventions, where he found an entirely new calling.

Beginning in 2010, Kim embarked on a career as an event moderator, serving as the Master of Ceremonies at that year's FedCon (a science fiction convention held in Germany). Later, he was the Trek Track Director at the celebrated Dragon Con event, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the course of his new career, Wang has held moderating duties and hosted panels and events at major pop culture conventions in Montreal, Edmonton, Phoenix, and Denver. According to Wang, his biggest role as a moderator came at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo in 2012, where he interviewed the legendary Stan Lee .

In 2020, Wang joined forces with co-star Robert Duncan McNeill to launch "The Delta Flyers," a podcast that discusses classic episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager."

Robert Duncan McNeill as Lt. Tom Paris

Robert Duncan McNeill guest-starred in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a hotshot pilot who broke the rules and wound up booted from Starfleet. So when producers developed a similar character, they brought in McNeill to play him, resulting in brash, cavalier helm officer Tom Paris. In 2002, after "Star Trek: Voyager" ended, McNeill starred in an episode of  "The Outer Limits" revival  and a few more small roles. However, like Dawson, McNeill left acting not long after the series ended to become a director and producer, starting with four episodes of "Star Trek: Enterprise."

Into the 2000s, McNiell helmed episodes of "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill" before becoming an executive producer on the action-comedy series "Chuck" starring Zachary Levi. Ultimately he'd direct 21 episodes of that series across its five seasons. From there, McNeill went on to sit behind the camera for installments of "The Mentalist," "Blue Bloods," and "Suits."

Since the 2010s, McNeill has served as an executive producer on further shows that included "The Gifted," the Disney+ reboot of "Turner & Hooch," and the SyFy series "Resident Alien." In addition to hosting "The Delta Flyers" podcast with co-star Garrett Wang, McNeill came back to "Star Trek" in 2022 when he voiced the character of Tom Paris in a cameo on the animated comedy "Star Trek: Lower Decks."

Ethan Phillips as Neelix

Another actor to appear on "Star Trek" before taking a leading role on "Voyager," Ethan Phillips played the quirky alien chef Neelix for all seven seasons of the show's run. A well-established veteran, his TV roles prior had included dramas like "NYPD Blue" and family hits like "Doogie Howser, M.D." Unfortunately, his role on "Voyager" never translated to big-time success after, though he hardly struggled for work. That's because he went back to his former career as a character actor.

In the ensuing years, Phillips could be seen all over the dial and beyond, with parts in "Touched by an Angel" and "8 Simple Rules" among many others, even popping up in a guest-starring role in an episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2002. Later he did a three-episode run on "Boston Legal," another Beantown-based legal drama from David E. Kelley, this one starring "Star Trek" legend William Shatner and "Deep Space Nine" alum René Auberjonois. Some of the biggest shows he's found work on during the 2010s meanwhile include "Better Call Saul" and a recurring role in the Lena Dunham comedy "Girls." He's also had roles in major movies, showing up in "Inside Llewyn Davis," "The Purge: Election Year," and "The Island."

Though he hasn't come back to "Star Trek," Phillips did return to sci-fi in 2020, joining the main cast of the HBO space comedy "Avenue 5" alongside Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine

Though she didn't arrive on "Star Trek: Voyager" until Season 4, Jeri Ryan arguably became the series' biggest star. She came in to help liven up a series that was struggling and joined the cast as a former Borg drone named Seven of Nine . It proved to be just what the series needed and a career-defining role for Ryan. One of the few cast members of "Voyager" to parlay her role into bigger success, Ryan immediately joined the David E. Kelley legal drama "Boston Public" after the series ended.

There she had a three-season run and in 2006 she secured another starring role on another legal drama, this time in the James Woods series "Shark," with Danielle Panabaker and Henry Simmons. Smaller recurring roles came after, including multi-episode stints on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Two and a Half Men," and "Leverage," before Ryan returned to a main cast with her co-starring role in "Body of Proof" in 2011 alongside Dana Delany. Parts in "Helix" and "Bosch" came after, as well as brief recurring roles in "MacGyver" and "Major Crimes," leading right up to her return to "Star Trek" in 2020.

That year, Ryan joined the cast of the revival series "Star Trek: Picard." Returning to the role of Seven of Nine, she supported series lead Patrick Stewart by appearing in all three seasons, and rumor has it she may even star in a spin-off.

Jennifer Lien as Kes

Joining the Starfleet and Maquis crew aboard Voyager was Kes, a young alien woman with mild telepathic powers and just a nine-year lifespan, and played by Jennifer Lien. Unfortunately, her character never quite gelled, and in Season 4 Lien was written out to make way for Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.

Leaving the series in 1997, Lien's career stalled in front of the camera, though she did manage a role in "American History X" alongside "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" star Avery Brooks. However, most of her subsequent work came in animation, with voice work in "Superman: The Animated Series" — where she played Inza, the wife of Doctor Fate — and a starring role as Agent L in "Men in Black: The Series."

Unfortunately, Lien pretty much left acting shortly after that. She married filmmaker Phil Hwang and started a family but has faced personal problems along the way. While struggling to deal with her mental health, Lien was arrested in 2015 for indecent exposure and again in 2018 for driving without a license.

Manu Intiraymi as Icheb

Late in Season 6 of "Star Trek: Voyager," a storyline saw the ship rescue a stranded vessel commanded by a group of wayward Borg children. At the conclusion of the story, four young drones join the crew, becoming a surrogate family of sorts to Seven of Nine after jettisoning their Borg identities. The eldest of them is Icheb, a teenager who becomes like a brother to Seven, played by actor Manu Intiraymi. The young actor went on to make 11 appearances across the final two seasons of the show.

When "Voyager" ended in 2001, Intiraymi continued acting, with his largest role coming in "One Tree Hill." There he played Billy — a local drug dealer — in a recurring role in 2012. Further projects were mostly independent films like "5th Passenger" in 2017 and "Hell on the Border," a 2019 Western starring David Gyasi, Ron Perlman, and Frank Grillo.

In 2017, Intiraymi came under fire for criticizing fellow "Star Trek" actor Anthony Rapp, who'd made accusations of sexual assault against Kevin Spacey . A few years later, fans speculated those comments may have been why he wasn't asked to return to the role of Icheb in "Star Trek: Picard," with a new actor playing the part in a scene that killed off the character.

Scarlett Pomers as Naomi Wildman

Plenty of TV shows have added a kid to shake up the status quo late into their run, and "Star Trek: Voyager" was not immune to this trope. In addition to Borg kids like Icheb, Samantha Wildman — the newborn daughter of a crewperson — became a recurring character beginning in Season 5, played by Scarlett Pomers. She'd wind up in 16 episodes, including a few where she played a leading role. In the aftermath of the end of the series, Pomers appeared in the Julia Roberts film "Erin Brockovich," and in 2001 joined the cast of the sitcom "Reba."

For six seasons Pomers starred as Kyra Hart, daughter of the show's star played by Reba McEntire. Appearing in a whopping 103 episodes, it was only Pomers' second regular role but also her last on-screen performance. When that series concluded, Pomers essentially retired from acting. Unfortunately, her exit from the stage was at least partly due to her ongoing battle with an eating disorder, and Pomers has since become an outspoken advocate for those struggling with anorexia and mental illness. In a 2019 interview with StarTrek.com , Pomers also talked about her subsequent career as a photographer, musician, and jewelry designer.

If you are struggling with an eating disorder, or know someone who is, help is available. Visit the National Eating Disorders Association website or contact NEDA's Live Helpline at 1-800-931-2237. You can also receive 24/7 Crisis Support via text (send NEDA to 741-741).

Martha Hackett as Seska

In the early seasons of "Star Trek: Voyager," one of the most compelling ongoing storylines was that of Seska, a Bajoran and former Maquis rebel and on-again-off-again lover of Chakotay. Played by recurring guest star Martha Hackett, it was later revealed that Seska was actually an enemy agent in disguise. Hackett would appear in a total of 13 episodes of the series, making it by far the largest role in her career. Still, she has appeared in some big hits over the last two decades.

Those included a small role in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in 2005 and an appearance in the cult horror movie "The Bye Bye Man" in 2017. It also includes one-off appearances in episodes of popular projects on the small screen, like "The Mindy Project" in 2014, "Masters of Sex" a year earlier, and a recurring role in the daytime soap "Days of Our Lives" between 2016 and 2018. Thanks to her iconic role as Seska, though, Hackett continues to be a regular on the "Star Trek" convention circuit and was interviewed for the upcoming "Star Trek: Voyager" documentary "To the Journey."

Robert Picardo as the Doctor

For 30 years, the world of science fiction meant one thing when the moniker of "The Doctor" was uttered, but that all changed in 1995 with the launch of "Star Trek: Voyager." There, actor Robert Picardo — already known for antagonistic roles in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" and "InnerSpace" — starred as the Doctor, the nameless holographic chief medical officer aboard the Voyager. Known for his offbeat humor and cantankerous attitude, he was played to perfection by Picardo, and it would become the actor's signature role.

Still, even after leaving sickbay as the Doctor, Picardo had a healthy career, moving quickly into a role in "The Lyon's Den" starring Rob Lowe and Kyle Chandler in 2003. A year later he joined another iconic sci-fi franchise when he secured a recurring part in "Stargate SG-1"  as Richard Woolsey, a grumpy U.S. official who opposed the Stargate program. Following a string of appearances on the flagship series, Picardo joined the main cast of "Stargate: Atlantis" in 2006. A few years later, Picardo had another repeat role, this time as Jason Cooper on "The Mentalist," and he later enjoyed a stint on the Apple TV+ drama "Dickinson."

In 2023, the actor made a guest appearance on the "Quantum Leap" revival playing Doctor Woolsey, whose name is a clear tribute to his two biggest TV roles.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

The Intriguing World Of Entertainment

‘Star Trek: Voyager’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

By Christopher Covello | January 18, 2023

Star Trek: Voyager Cast

Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of any Star Trek show, you could still name at least two actors from the franchise and be able to spit out at least two famous quotes spawned from them. If you have seen a few of the different series or are even a diehard Trekkie, you’ve heard of Star Trek: Voyager.

While not the most famous run of the Star Trek franchise, it still played an important part during its years on the air. We break down what the cast members have been doing since they last finished their mission.

Star Trek: Voyager follows the crew through the challenge of being stuck 70,000 light-years away in the Delta Quadrant and trying to get back home to the Alpha Quadrant. Voyager also gives us the first time we see a female in the captain’s seat, with Captain Kathryn Janeway sitting at the helm.

Where does Voyager fall on the Star Trek Timeline?

If you want to know where this one lands on the chronological watching order (because that’s all that matters, right?) it depends if you want to include the movies and animated series in the lineup. The show hits anywhere from fifth to ninth in viewing order based on what you want to include.

On the fictional timeline, Star Trek: Voyager takes place during the years 2371 to 2378, so 20 years after the first journey with the crew. Though we all know there will be Star Trek movies and shows coming out for years to come, we could see this journey shift along the pecking order.

How long was the show on the air?

Filming for Star Trek: Voyager started in 1993, with the first episode airing on January 16th, 1995, on the then brand-new, now non-existent UPN (United Paramount Network). May 23rd, 2001 was the last voyage for this crew.

With a hearty seven-season run, Star Trek: Voyager beamed into our living rooms for an astounding 172 episodes over the years.

Why did Star Trek: Voyager get Cancelled?

Well, actually, Star Trek: Voyager never officially got canceled. Like most shows at that time, seven seasons was about the shelf life. Though ratings did drop over time, and fans weren’t too happy with the direction of the show, Star Trek: Voyager was able to end on the note they wanted to.

Kate Mulgrew as ‘Admiral Kathryn Janeway’

Star Trek Voyager - Kathryn Janeway

Nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe, and winner of an Obie, Critic’s Choice, and Saturn award, Kate Mulgrew has been gracing our screen for decades.

In the Star Trek universe alone Kate has reprised her role as Admiral Kathryn Janeway in 2002s Star Trek: Nemesis, 2004s Star Trek: The Experience – Borg Invasion, and most recently, in the 2021 animated return of the franchise Star Trek: Prodigy.

Kate Mulgrew now

You may recognize her the most as Galina “Red” Reznikov in the hit Orange Is the New Black. You can keep up with Kate on her Instagram , where she is very active.

Robert Beltran as ‘Commander Chakotay’

Star Trek Voyager - Chakotay

Robert Beltran played Commander Chakotay on Star Trek: Voyager for the entire series. Before stepping on the Voyager, Robert had already been on the stage and screens big and small.

No stranger to TV, Robert has appeared on CSI: Miami, Medium, and Big Love, as well as dozens of TV movies.

Robert Beltran Now

Most recently Robert has used his voice to return as Commander Chakotay in Star Trek: Prodigy in 2022.

Roxann Dawson as ‘B’Elanna Torres’

Star Trek Voyager - B'Elanna Torres

Since Roxann Dawson played half-Klingon and half-human B’Elanna Torres on Star Trek: Voyager, she hasn’t really stopped working. The list of Roxann’s accomplishments and appearances on screen are way too numerous to count.

From writing plays, acting on stage, being part of documentaries, movies, TV shows, lending her voice to video games and audiobooks, and directing tv, Roxann has been one busy bee.

Roxann Dawson now

If you watch TV at all, Roxann has directed at least one episode of it. The last time Roxann truly graced the screen herself was in a 2011 episode of the hit show The Closer.

Robert Duncan McNeill as ‘Tom Paris’

Star Trek Voyager - Tom Paris

Robert Duncan McNeill had already been acting for decades before he brought Tom Paris to life on Star Trek: Voyager.

After Voyager he switched gears and did more directing than acting. Robert went on to direct a ton of episodes of early aughts mega-hits like Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, The O.C., and Desperate Housewives.

Robert Duncan McNeill

If you were obsessed with the show Chuck, Robert executive produced, produced, and directed the hit.

Ethan Phillips as ‘Neelix’

Star Trek Voyager - Neelix

Ethan Phillips has steadily been on TV since the early 80s and hasn’t stopped since.

Before playing Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager, Ethan was in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1990 playing Dr. Farek, and after, in 2002, he was in an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2002.

Ethan Phillips now

He also appeared in the miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Outside of that franchise, Ethan can be seen in episodes of Bones, Mental, Veep, and Girls. Most recently he was in 2020s Avenue 5.

Robert Picardo as ‘The Doctor’

star trek voyager Lewis Zimmerman

Possibly one of the most recognizable faces from the Voyager cast, Robert Picardo has been in just about every movie and TV show since the late 70s.

Playing The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager wasn’t his first hit show, as he was nominated for an Emmy for his role on the late 80s hit The Wonder Years.

Robert Picardo now

Robert popped up in another sci-fi-star show, appearing on Stargate SG-1 from 2004 to 2007, and from 2006-2009 on Stargate Atlantis. In 2022 Roberts will lend his voice to the animated film MEAD.

He is very active on his Instagram and regularly post photos and videos of his life.

Jeri Ryan as ‘Seven of Nine’

Star Trek Voyager - Seven Of Nine

Though portraying Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager was Jeri Ryan’s first long-time TV role, she had been in episodes of shows like Who’s the Boss?, Matlock: The Fatal Seduction, and Melrose Place by then.

Immediately following her run on Star Trek Jeri landed a leading role on the early 2000s drama Boston Public and then the drama Shark from 2006 to 2008.

Jeri Ryan Now

Fans loved that Jeri picked back up her Seven of Nine role and is back in space on Star Trek: Picard with Sir Patrick Stewart.

Tim Russ as ‘Lieutenant Commander Tuvok’

Star Trek Voyager - Tuvok

Not only has Tim Russ played Lieutenant Commander Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager, but he was in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Tim Russ Now

Other notable runs for Tim were on shows like Samantha Who? and iCarly. You can see Tim more recently in the 2020 George Clooney directed sci-fi movie The Midnight Sky.

Tim is also a musician and has started the band ‘Tim Russ Crew’. They play a mix of pop rock, blues, old school and roots music. You can check out a sample of their music here .

Garrett Wang as ‘Harry Kim’

Playing Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager was Garrett Wang’s big break on television.

Since his Trek days, Garrett mostly sticks with the convention crowds, making appearances, being a celebrity moderator, and since 2010, being the Trek Track director for Dragon Con.

Garrett Wang now

He currently co-hosts a podcast with fellow Voyager star Robert Duncan McNeill. You can follow him on Instagram , where he posts regularly.

Jennifer Lien as ‘Kes’

Star Trek Voyager - Kes

With a handful of shows under her belt by the time she landed the role of Kes on Star Trek: Voyager,  Jennifer Lien  was all over the TV in the 90s.

After the birth of her son, Jennifer decided to step away from acting in 2002 to be a mother, and hasn’t been on screen since.

Jennifer Lien now

Unfortunately, from 2015 to 2018 Lien had some trouble with the law and decided to keep away from the camera, opting to try to start a new life as a nutritionist.

Tarik Ergin as ‘Lieutenant Junior Grade Ayala’

Star Trek Voyager - Ayala

Not everyone that makes it on screen wants to stay on, and that was the case for Tarik Ergin. After playing Lieutenant Junior Grade Ayala on Star Trek: Voyager, he pretty much stayed out of the spotlight.

He instead got back to his lacrosse roots. Having been a professional player in 2010, since 2011 he has been the Head Coach of the lacrosse Varsity team at Oak Park High School in California.

Scarlett Pomers as ‘Naomi Wildman’

Star Trek Voyager - Naomi Wildman

Before Scarlett Pomers played Naomi Wildman on Star Trek: Voyager she started her career appearing in Michael Jackson’s 1992 hit “Heal the World” music video.

Scarlett Pomers now

But since her days in space Kate has popped in shows like Providence, Judging Amy, and That’s Life. From 2001 to 2007 Kate snagged a main role on the hit show, Reba.

Majel Barrett (Voyager ship voice)

Majel Barrett

Once a Trekkie, always a Trekkie, and that was always true of Majel Barrett. It didn’t hurt that Majel’s husband was the creator of Star Trek, making her the official First Lady of the franchise.

Not only was she the voice of the ship’s computer in Star Trek: Voyager, but Majel was in the original Star Trek pilot in 1965.

She played multiple characters throughout the decades, appearing in every Star Trek journey until we sadly lost Barrett in 2008 to leukemia.

Star Trek Voyager Episode “Threshold”—a Retro Review

By cameron black | jan 29, 2023.

Photo: Star Trek: Voyager 25th Anniversary Special.. Image Courtesy Titan Comics

“Threshold” is a well-known Star Trek: Voyager episode, and it turned 27 this week.

When you have a franchise that has been in existence as long as Star Trek has, a franchise that spans 9 TV series and 13 films, there will always be those episodes that stand apart from the others in the minds of Trekkies everywhere. For the most part, it is usually popular episodes like the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Trouble with Tribbles” or a dramatic episode such as “Yesterday’s Enterprise” from Star Trek: The Next Generation, or “In the Pale Moon Light” from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Having sung the praises of the above mentioned episodes (and there are so many others that deserve that praise) when a franchise has been going for as long as Trek has, you will also have episodes that cross over into the realm of silliness, or are just plain bad. There are some episodes that are so incredibly unbelievably silly, that for better or for worse, they must stand out because they are so laughably ludicrous that they must be seen to be believed, and season 2 episode 15 “Threshold” of Star Trek: Voyager is one such episode.

January 29th marked the anniversary of the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Threshold.”

Threshold first aired back in 1996, and immediately became a well-known episode for Trekkies. Unfortunately it was for all the wrong reasons. I will not waste your time with a rehashing of the episode, for I am operating under the assumption that if you are reading this piece, then you have seen the episode. But you can read a recap here , if you prefer.

Contrary to how the rest of the episode would play out, it actually had a very strong beginning. You have a storyline that is quite literally history in the making, with Tom Paris being the first pilot to reach a speed of warp ten, breaking the threshold.

Act one of the episode is completely devoted to this story line, which proves to be a very interesting one and is complemented by very strong moments between Paris and Janeway (two characters whose interactions are usually limited to Paris carrying out Janeway’s orders).

The moment where Janeway comes to Paris’s quarters to tell him how dangerous the flight could be to him I felt was one of the stronger scenes in the entire episode, showing us once again how much Janeway truly cares for her crew and giving us a glimpse into the mind and heart of Tom Paris and what drives him.

The scenes that follow, depicting Tom Paris successfully breaking the Threshold and achieving warp 10, will go down in the annals of Trek as one of the historic moments in the franchise, which is what makes it all the more unfortunate that almost with the very beginning of act two, the rest of the episode is marred in silliness and outcomes that are utterly ridiculous, even for Trek.

This had great potential to be one of the strongest episodes of the series, possibly even the franchise, had it gone a different direction, or the episode had been mapped out differently. For example: Rather then Paris achieving warp ten at the end of act one, he could have achieved it at the conclusion of the episode.

The body of the episode could have been about his prepperations to fly the shuttle and possibly battling with his own inner demons about the possibility of failure and how that would make him look in the eyes of his father and himself.

As it is, the start of act two is not completely out of the realm of possibility. Believe it or not, there actually are people out there (roughly only 50 reported cases according to my short research) who are allergic to water. The condition is known as aquagenic urticaria. I knew this while I was watching this episode, so when Paris came down with this extremely rare allergy that was not to silly for me at all.

Now, an allergy to oxygen is simply not possible, but, this is Star Trek, so it is necessary to somewhat suspend belief and just go with it. Even as Paris lies in a force field, filled with a different atmosphere that has no oxygen, the episode is still believable by Trek standards and has yet to cross over into that realm of utter silliness.

Indeed, for even when act two begins to go down that rabbit hole and Paris begins to transform, this episode still succeeds in showcasing the acting chops of Robert Duncan McNeill, for while the mutation he is going through is almost more comical then frightening, he sells it as best he possibly can, and should be applauded for what he was able to do with the material he was given to work with in this Star Trek: Voyager episode.

But his acting abilities could not save the third act for by this point the episode had reached B role creature film as Paris takes the form of something that can only be described as a giant salamander. Once the episode reaches it conclusion, giant salamander Tom Paris has also turned Janeway into a giant salamander creature (I guess because she also experienced warp 10, but I was a little fuzzy on that), and they mated and had offspring, before they are found and restored back to normal by the crew of Voyager.

The fact that Paris and Janeway mated and had children together is acknowledged only by awkward comments made by Janeway at the end of the episode, comments which could have possibly been taken as flirtacious were they not so clearly uncomfortable.

This Star Trek: Voyager episode had a strong beginning but went downhill from there.

This episode had a strong beginning, telling a story of a historical moment in Trek, and featuring strong performances by Mulgrew and Duncan McNeill, but by act two, reality was being stretched a little much even for Trek, and by act three, it had regressed into utter lunacy.

Having said that, I would still rather watch a bad episode of Trek than an episode of most of whatever else is on TV these days, and despite how campy this Star Trek: Voyager episode became, I still enjoied it for what it was.

In conclusion, if you are a completionist and a hard core Trekkie like myself, you should certainly give this episode a watch, if for no other reason then to see Paris reach warp 10, as well as strong performances by Mulgrew and Duncan McNeill.

If I may offer a word of advice, though, go into this episode just as you might a very low budget creature feature. Have fun with the complete and total silliness of acts two and three, and be grateful that we will not be treated to any future episodes of Paris and Janeway trying to raise a family of gigantic mutant salamanders.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

The Baddest Part of Space: A Brief History of the Badlands

The last place in the galaxy you want to take your starship, is often the place with the most going on.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's "Erigah" and "Labyrinths"!

Graphic illustration of Voyager, Discovery, and Defiant navigating the Badlands

StarTrek.com

The stormiest part of the galaxy is also the place where everyone seems to end-up, at least, if you’re in a certain kind of Star Trek adventure.

In the seventh (" Erigah ") and eighth ("Labyrinths") episodes of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, the crew learns that the final clue to unlocking the Progenitor tech will lead to the Eternal Gallery and Archive, a kind of mobile library. These days, it's located in the center of the Badlands , an area of space beset with plasma storms, gravitational anomalies, and, on a few occasions, the accidental doorway to the other side of the galaxy.

Discovery 's return to the Badlands might be the next-to-last stop on the treasure map to get the elusive secrets of the Progenitor tech, but it's a thrilling moment for longtime Star Trek fans. The Badlands isn't just a random Easter egg. This is a part of space pivotal to the history of the 24th Century, a place which spans not just a chunk of the Alpha Quadrant, but the paths of two beloved Trek shows — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager .

Here's your brief history of the Badlands, plus, what makes it so bad, and so cool.

Star Trek and the Art of Foreshadowing

Close-up of the Badlands and Carassia space on a LCARs screen in 'When It Rains...'

"When It Rains..."

In many ways, the Badlands represents a moment in Star Trek history where the franchise was getting really good at planting seeds for later plot developments, and, in the case of the Badlands, for TV series that had yet to even premiere. As many longtime fans know, back in the 1990s, having serialized arcs on any TV show was rare, meaning that ongoing shared continuity between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine was downright revolutionary.

How does this connect to the Badlands? Well, before the U.S.S. Voyager actually went into the Badlands in the 1995 series premiere of Star Trek: Voyager , " Caretaker ," the concept of the Badlands was introduced in Deep Space Nine .

On April 24, 1994, in the 20th episode of Deep Space Nine 's second season, the concept of the Badlands was quietly introduced. Titled " The Maquis, Part I ," the episode introduced the growing resistance movement among former Federation colonists living in a demilitarized zone that now was part of Cardassian space. This storyline was directly connected to The Next Generation episode " Journey's End ," which had aired just a month prior on March 28, 1994. That episode established the conundrum of what was happening to the Federation colonists in the Cardassian DMZ, and then, DS9's "The Maquis, Part I" and " The Maquis, Part II ," revealed what happened when those colonists organized into a fighting force.

By May 16, 1994, this storyline pivoted back to TNG with the episode " Preemptive Strike ," in which Ro Laren defects to the Maquis, breaking Captain Picard's heart for nearly 30 years, until their reconciliation in the 2023 episode of Star Trek: Picard , " Imposters ."

So, in 1994, the Star Trek franchise escalated a huge storyline in March, April, and May. And one common element of this entire Maquis storyline was the Badlands.

The Badlands Revealed

The Vetar navigates the treacherous part of space known as the Badlands in 'Caretaker'

"Caretaker"

Although Deep Space Nine introduced the concept of the Badlands in Season 2, and later mentioned it again in the Season 3 episode " Defiant ," the full destructive and absurdly dangerous aspect of the Badlands wasn't fully on display until the first episode of Star Trek: Voyager .

In "The Maquis, Part 1," Sisko says, "A few ships have been lost there over the past year or two," which again, foreshadows the moment when Voyager, and then Chakotay's ship the Val Jean , are transported to the Delta Quadrant, from the Badlands.

So while the Badlands had been visited and name-checked before Voyager , most fans associate this unstable region of space with that series. And with good reason, if Voyager had never pursued the Val Jean into the Badlands, the entire show would never have happened. Janeway even selected the temperamental, former-criminal Tom Paris as her pilot, because the Badland were known to be treacherous. And although DS9 would revisit the Badlands a bit more in subsequent seasons, the pink-orange landscape of the plasma storms from the opening moments of "Caretaker" have been burned into the brains of fans for almost 30 years.

Discovery ' s Return to the Badlands

In Discovery's Ready Room, the crew looks at a map of the Badlands where the Eternal Gallery and Archive exists in 'Erigah'

"Erigah"

As Rayner tells Captain Burnham in "Erigah," he’s been to the Badlands and "it's as fun as it sounds." In "Labyrinths," we learn what was a very unstable region in the year 2371, has expanded to become, as Rayner explains, "the largest plasma storm in the quadrant," in 3191.

When Discovery enters the Badlands, it appears to be one intricate, massive storm in space, even more intense than back in the Voyager days. "It's kinda beautiful, in a twisted sort of way," Tilly declares as the ship rolls up on the Badlands, and she's totally right.

While the Badlands has always been a scary place in the Trek universe, there's also something ethereal and magical about this specific spacescape. In DS9, it was a place of refuge for an idealistic band of rebels. In Voyager , the Badlands became a doorway to a larger adventure, changing the lives of Janeway and the rest of the crew in ways that had countless repercussions throughout all of Star Trek history. And now, in Discovery , the Badlands becomes a diaphanous, whimsical setting for a library in space.

'Labyrinths'

"Labyrinths"

One of Star Trek 's recurring themes is the ways in which the pursuit of knowledge can help us all overcome hardship. And in Discovery , that theme is perfectly exemplified by a celestial library, at the center of an interstellar storm.

Here Are The Star Trek Series Coming to Paramount+ in 2023

It is a very good time to be a Star Trek fan. At just about any given time there is new Star Trek being released on Paramount+. Not since the days when there was Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager all releasing content in what was then a relatively short amount of time, has there been so much to geek about in the world of Trek.

In 2022 Star Trek released new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy. This is more content than ever and may someday be looked back on as the second golden age of Star Trek. The discussion about what defines the previous golden age will be saved for another post. As 2023 starts, there will be much more Star Trek coming to Paramount+.

Throughout most of the year, there will be new episodes of one Trek series or another. Below is a look at what is currently known to be coming in 2023:

Star Trek: Picard – Season 3

Premieres: February 16, 2023

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard will have Sir Patrick Stewart once again returning as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. This role he originated in 1987. Now in a much different chapter of life than when he was captain of the Enterprise, Picard is facing some new adventures and challenges from a different seat and perspective. This final season will have Stewart joined by LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

This season will see Admiral Picard pulling his crew back together to face a new villain named Vadic, portrayed by Amanda Plummer. Daniel Davis will also be returning to his role as Moriarty, the sentient hologram based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous literary villain and foil to Sherlock Holmes. LeVar Burton’s daughter, Mica, has been cast as Georgi LaForge’s youngest daughter Alandra. While the main ship of the season will be the U.S.S. Titan, the Enterprise F is also set to make an appearance.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2

Premieres: 2023

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have Captain Pike back in the center seat of the Enterprise for more adventures in the pre Captain Kirk era Starfleet history. However, James T. Kirk (as played by Paul Wesley) is expected to be showing up in the second season. There is the possibility of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott appearing in the second season after making a brief cameo at the end of the first season.

The second season of Strange New Worlds will also include a couple of characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks. There will be a crossover episode with Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler appearing alongside the crew of the Enterprise in their live-action form. They will be portrayed by Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, who also voice the characters.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery will be returning for a fifth season. The crew of Discovery are now living in a time that is 900 years after the events of The Original Series. This season will be a race as Discovery’s crew and many others all seek an ancient power. This next season is said to have a change in tone that will be more action and adventure.

Previously, Discovery was racing to save the galaxy from an anomaly and help rebuild the Federation. During this, Captain Burnham’s love interest chose the wrong side of the fight and ended up having to serve time because of it. It is unknown how this will play out in the coming season, but it would be no surprise if the next chapter of their relationship is explored.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 4

Premieres: 2023 (expected)

Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue to share the exploits of the crew found in the lower decks of the U.S.S. Cerritos. The season wrapped up with the Cerritos and other California -class ships showing their worth as second contact ships over the automated Texas -class ships. It also showed some growth and changes for members of the crew that could have some pretty significant impact on the future of the show.

Lower Decks takes place not just in the lower decks of the Cerritos, but also in many ways the lower decks of the Starfleet itself as the mission of the Cerritos and other California -class ships aren’t viewed as quite as important as other missions in the fleet. This series, however, has some amazing cameos and guest stars that have brought characters like Captain Riker, Zeframe Cochrane, Leah Brahms, Hikaru Sulu, and many more!

An exact release date isn’t known for this series but the initial announcement said it was expected to be sometime in 2023.

star trek voyager 2023

Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 2

The crew of the U.S.S. Protostar will be back for a second season and more adventures. It was announced earlier this year that Star Trek: Prodigy had been picked up for a second season that should be arriving in 2023. Where the crew of the Protostar will be going and what will be happening to them remains a big mystery. This series has already included new speed capabilities for a Starfleet ship, time travel, and some other new story devices that provide a lot of possibilities for this crew’s future adventures. The crew itself is different than any other Star Trek show to date, all of them being misfits working under the tutelage of a holographic Admiral Janeway. However, as the first season wraps up, this unique crew has also made an ally in the real Admiral Janeway.

It is unknown when exactly season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy will be arriving on Paramount+ other than sometime in 2023. With the current production schedule, it could also be early 2024.

There are also some Star Trek shows that are in development currently as well. First off is Section 31 , Starfleet’s shady spy organization. Michelle Yeoh is set to star in this series whenever it makes its way to the screen. She plays the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, who has been redeemed a bit but still can be challenging and dangerous. A timeline for this series’ arrival has not been announced. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is also in the works. Not a lot is known about this show other than it will have cadets at the Academy. It isn’t even known what era the series will take place. It is possible that since Tilly took a job at the recently reopened Starfleet Academy during Star Trek: Discovery that it could take place in the 31st century. However, that is pure speculation.

There is a lot of Star Trek to be enjoyed currently and to also look forward to. While no movies appear to be on the horizon at the moment, there is plenty to enjoy on Paramount+. This includes all the previous Star Trek series and Short Treks. A couple of the movies from the Kelvin timeline are also on the streamer.

Every Voyager Character Who Has Returned In Star Trek (& How)

Star trek: voyager’s first borg episode set up species 8472, squid game season 2 release month confirmed by gi-hun star.

  • Tom Paris underwent significant character growth from a playboy to a loving partner over Star Trek: Voyager's seven seasons.
  • The episode "Blood Fever" highlighted Tom's development and laid the foundation for his romance with B'Elanna Torres.
  • Tom and B'Elanna's relationship brought out the best in each other and provided engaging ongoing storylines for both characters.

Star Trek: Voyager season 3 perfectly demonstrated how much Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) had changed since season 1. Tom was the ship's pilot and occasional medic, part of Voyager 's main cast of characters , and one of the characters with the biggest shift in personality throughout the show's seven seasons . Although he ended the series as a valued member of the crew and a loving husband and father, Tom's journey on Voyager started in a much different place.

When audiences first met Tom in Voyager 's pilot episode, he was an angry, jaded convicted felon who had pushed everyone in his life away , including his family. Not only that, but Tom was a notorious ladies' man and pursued women with a determination that often came off as unsettling or unpleasant. It's hard to believe that a character like Tom could change so much over Voyager 's seven seasons given where he started, but the progression of his transformation was demonstrated as early as season 3.

Star Trek: Voyager's beloved characters have returned in Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and especially Star Trek: Prodigy.

Star Trek: Voyager’s “Blood Fever” Showed How Much Tom Paris Had Changed Since Season 1

"blood fever" demonstrated that paris was a wholly different character.

Although his character change may have seemed gradual, Voyager season 3, episode 16, "Blood Fever" demonstrated what a different man Tom was from when he was first introduced . "Blood Fever" was the first episode to depict the start of the future relationship between Tom and B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), Voyager 's most stable romance and one of the show's more interesting romantic subplots. During the episode, Tom and B'Elanna were forced to acknowledge their romantic feelings for each other while B'Elanna underwent a version of Pon Farr passed to her by Vulcan Ensign Vorik (Alexander Enberg) .

Tom's insistence on treating the situation carefully laid the groundwork for how strong and healthy his and B'Elanna's romance would become in later seasons.

Tom's refusal to " take advantage " of B'Elanna's altered mental state and give in to her advances made it clear how much he had changed. In season 1, Tom would likely not have hesitated to agree to B'Elanna's request, but "Blood Fever" showed that he had grown to respect B'Elanna and women in general on a different level . Rather than simply acquiescing to the situation, which could have caused problems in his relationship with B'Elanna going forward, Tom's insistence on treating the situation carefully laid the groundwork for how strong and healthy his and B'Elanna's romance would become in later seasons.

Why The Paris/Torres Relationship Was A Great Decision For Both Characters

Tom and b'elanna brought out the best in each other.

Thanks to its well-handled set-up in "Blood Fever," Voyager 's Paris/Torres relationship was a great decision for both characters. Putting Tom in a long-term romance with another member of the main cast helped cement his continued move away from the playboy archetype that wasn’t working for him in seasons 1 and 2 . Thanks to B'Elanna, Tom became a more well-rounded character and gained an ongoing storyline with endless possibilities that Voyager made work to the show's advantage.

Likewise, the romance allowed B’Elanna to show her softer side more often, especially when her struggles with her half-Klingon heritage became difficult. B'Elanna's relationship with Tom was also a good vehicle for exploring her past trauma, especially in later seasons when she dealt with things like finding out she was pregnant and grappling with the heritage of her and Tom's daughter in light of her childhood. Tom and B'Elanna truly brought out the best qualities in each other , and Star Trek: Voyager was smart to pair them together.

Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes Played An Important Role On NCIS: Los Angeles

"Star Trek" veteran Jonathan Frakes has carved quite a legacy out for himself as an actor since replacing Billy Campbell as William Riker , but as a director he's left an even larger footprint. That reach has expanded into the world of "NCIS," specifically "NCIS: Los Angeles." Frakes directed six episodes of the action-drama over its run, adding to his long resume as a director, with the outings he led for the west-coast "NCIS" spanning eight seasons, and include the memorable Christmas episode "Free Ride" from Season 4.

Frakes' influence over the world of "NCIS: LA" doesn't just stop with his directing chops. He also has an uncredited appearance in an "NCIS: Los Angeles" episode "Disorder" from Season 2, playing a brief role as the nonspeaking Navy Commander Doctor Stanfill; the "Star Trek" actor goes uncredited for his performance, though he did receive credit for directing this installment.

While a six episode directing run might sound particularly impressive, it appears just to be another day on the job for Frakes, who continues to lengthen his impressive resume both behind and in front of the cameras.

Jonathan Frakes Has Made Quite A Name For Himself As A Director

From 1990 to 1994, Jonathan Frakes picked up the megaphone to helm eight episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and hasn't stopped since.

Among the veteran performer's many directing credits are three episodes apiece of "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the "Star Trek" films "First Contact" and "Insurrection," six episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" and seven episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," which he swears is back on track for Season 5. His non-"Star Trek" directing credits are equally impressive and include 13 episodes of "Leverage," five episodes of "Burn Notice" and 10 of the TNT dramady "The Librarians" and the "Librarians"-universe television film "The Librarian III: Curse of the Sacred Chalice." As of press time he's still got a foot in both the acting and directing games, and even produced the CW classic "Roswell" and 11 episodes of "The Librarians."

It hasn't all been roses for Frakes, who told Variety  in 2023 that his very first time shepherding the rowdy, closely-knit "Next Generation" cast made him sympathize with previous directors who were frustrated by the experience. "I had a lot of support, including from my acting company. But I realized what these other directors had gone through and what a****** we were. And I had not a leg to stand on in terms of asking them to behave." But, since then, he's more than gotten his space legs under him.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 8 Review – Labyrinths

The Discovery crew is on the hunt for the Progenitors' final puzzle piece in the library of our dreams, but to find it Michael must first look inward.

This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers.

Having fun isn’t hard if you’ve got a library card on the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery , which sees Captain Michael Burnham and company visit the Eternal Gallery and Archive, a mobile knowledge bank that is, hands down, the absolute coolest of the five locations we’ve visited on this season-long clue hunt. To be fair, “Labyrinths” isn’t an episode where all that much happens, but its premise still makes for a surprisingly satisfying hour, and the slow-moving approach of the Breen adds some nice tension to Michael’s vision quest into her own psyche.

Full of one-of-a-kind manuscripts, rare artifacts, and other priceless items from cultures both present and lost, the Archive is exactly the kind of location that fits the adventure-themed feel of the season. It also looks cool as hell, packed to the gills with books and viewing rooms holding various priceless items from long-dead cultures. Arriving within it basically feels like the sci-fi version of that bit from Beauty and the Beast where Belle discovers all the books she now has access to, and if someone wanted to make an entire spin-off focused on the mysteries of this place and the people who came to visit it I would be glued to the screen every week.

The Archive is currently located in the Badlands, an area that will be intimately familiar to Star Trek fans as it has important connections to both Deep Space Nine and Voyager , though for some reason Discovery does almost nothing with that fact. (Sorry folks on the lookout for some version of a famous space station, I guess.) The still-raging plasma storms that once caused such trouble for Voyager do make the Archive more difficult to find and offer it a modicum of protection. The site is currently run by Hy’rell, an Efrosian librarian who is one of the most entertaining supporting characters Discovery has introduced in some time. Almost passive-aggressively cheerful, her relentless friendliness makes her iron spine about the Archive’s rules and mission, and it’s always fun to watch Micahel go up against someone who doesn’t immediately give her what she wants. Hy’rell feels an awful lot like the Star Trek version of The Guide from What We Do in the Shadows , is what I’m saying. (Also, I love her.)

Ad – content continues below

Burnham uses the library card she and the crew deciphered last week to access the last remaining copy of Labyrinths of the Mind , a text left behind by Betazoid scientist Marina Derex that’s meant to point the way to the final clue to the location of the Progenitor technology. But it turns out the book itself doesn’t really have all that much to do with the final test—it’s merely a case for another card, one that, upon touch, launches a program that takes Michael into a miniscape version of the Archive’s library. There, she must find the location of the last clue to access it in the real world. Like the other tests that Burnham and the Discovery crew have encountered, it’s tied to exploring a specific facet of the participant’s worthiness to access the information they’re seeking and whether they’re the sort of person who will properly use something so powerful as whatever it is the Progenitors left behind.

The idea that Michael finds the answer only when she admits and confronts her deepest fears—of failure, both professionally and personally, in terms of letting down those she cares about—is peak Discovery , the sort of endless navel-gazing these characters are constantly asked to engage in. On some level, this particular test might have been more interesting if someone other than Michael had been forced to take it. We’re all well acquainted with her failings and flaws at this point, and I don’t know that anyone is going to be shocked to learn that she’s got a perfectionism complex a mile wide, no matter how strong a performance Sonequa Martin-Green gives in this moment (which, by the way, is very good).

The only interesting part of this is that it finally gives us a little clarity about her feelings for Book, and how much she regrets pulling away from him. It’s a nice bit of emotional work for the romantic reunion that the show is so clearly telegraphing. Bonus points to David Ajala for pulling double duty this week as both Book and the AI administering Michael’s test, which she sees in his form. The uber-dramatic outfit and quiet sarcasm are quite fun and make for a very different vibe between the actors.

Elsewhere, the Breen are hot on Discovery’s heels, especially once Moll convinces them all that she’ll be able to resurrect L’ak once they track down the Progenitor tech. Unsurprisingly, Primark Ruhn is less enthused about restoring the life of a dead scion of the Breen Imperium than he is about finding a weapon powerful enough to allow him to claim the throne for himself, so it’s not all that much of a shock that he spends the bulk of this hour betraying and threatening people.

That he blackmails Michael into handing over the completed map is probably the least surprising thing to happen this entire season, though the idea that the hour ends with Moll killing the Primark and taking charge of his faction thanks to her role as L’ak’s wife is almost hilariously ridiculous. Thanks for making sure he didn’t destroy the Archive first though, I guess? We know so little about Moll outside of her relationship with L’ak that it’s easy for Discovery to make her character be whatever it needs to be at any particular moment, but she certainly never seemed like someone who would care all that much about the destruction of valuable cultural artifacts. (Or even innocent lives, come to that.) Oh, well, at least Hy’rell is safe!!

With two episodes left to go in Discovery’s run, it’s anybody’s guess how this is all going to end. Oh, we can likely figure out some of it: the race to the location of the Progenitors’ supposedly life-restoring tech is on, but it’s almost certainly not going to turn out to be what any of the people chasing it expect. Will it even be real? Or is this going to be one of those stories where the journey was always more important than the destination?

TrekMovie’s interview with supervising producer Barry J. Kelly adds some context to Voyager’s return. He explains:

Now we’re starting this season with a bit of a shipping episode where they’re shipping and escorting the USS Voyager off to Earth to become a museum.

The preview images released last week also show a few shots set on the USS Voyager with Boimler, Ransom, and Kayshon running into some Delta Quadrant problems.

More nostalgia and ‘memberberries. Color me surprised.

This is like complaining that it’s a cartoon.

What do you watch Star Trek for?? Do you mind if I ask how old you are?

I know the question isn’t aimed at me but i watch Star Trek because i love the style of storytelling that it does.

I love the idea of a future where Humanity has gotten over it’s hatred of one another a future where you are accepted no mater what your gender or non gender is or your sexual orientation is.

I love how each Trek show is different and my favorite Trek shows are DS9 and Discovery as both shows aren’t afraid to push the envelope and knock fans out of their comfort zone. To show us that being different from those that came before is a good thing to be embraced and not hated on.

Nostalgia can be and a lot of the time in Trek is good but for me again like in my other comment to much nostalgia can ruin a story for me like a lot of it did in Picard S3 and it was a good season but the amount of nostalgia dragged it down for me.

Better yet, what is Star Trek for anymore?

I’m not trying to be facetious. Honestly, this is a question I keep coming back to. Because, what with the recent obsession with nostalgia and the familiar (not just in Trek but across a large swath of popular culture), I’m finding myself less and less interested in it as a vehicle for genuine storytelling, boldly going to strange new worlds and so forth. I won’t say new Trek doesn’t have its fair share of fun moments, but it does seem more disposable to me now. Even forgettable at times.

I’m not sure that the charge works when applied to large swathes of popular culture, but it’s a valid question when it comes to Star Trek.

Well, without going too far off-topic, I think nostalgia is a current cultural problem, not only in entertainment and business but also in politics. Too much looking back and not enough looking forward.

Anyway, I should point out, though, I have no problem with LDS being this nostalgic bit of fun. It’s all the other stuff in other series that bugs me. I just wish they could compartmentalize it. Here’s a nostalgic series, and over there we have a series that’s entirely new.

I think by itself nostalgia is not bad, its just that everyone seems to be overusing it or overdoing it these days. Too much of everything is always bad.

But there’s the rub. It’s very hard for nostalgia to exist in small doses in a business that’s constantly chasing and exploiting trends. Get ready for lots and lots of more movies about classic toys like Barbie and classic video games like Mario, until we’re sick of them.

What do you watch Star Trek for??

To see a history of the future; to see an optimistic future; to see competence and teamwork in action; to see wonderous strange new worlds; maybe occasionally to even get a sense of the transcendent. None of which is LDX.

I don’t mind occasional nostalgia when it’s earned (see “Relics” and “Flashback” and “Judgment”). Some (emphasize “some”) worked on PICARD, which was a coda to a beloved series, although even there they laid it on much too thick in the second half of season 3 (did we really need President Anton Chekhov and Kirk’s tomb).

Do you mind if I ask how old you are?

Yes, actually I do. It’s rude.

I have to agree. I like nostalgia in small doses but with this and the nostalgia overload in Picard S3 (The nostalgia in S3 imo was used to prop up a weak story-line though it was great to see the Enterprise D again) i have had my fill of nostalgia.

I want new stories with new characters and them set on ships that haven’t been seen or given a chance to shine. I would like the ship to not be named the Enterprise as i think we have had enough stories set on an Enterprise for a while. Though i wouldn’t object to a show set on an Enterprise 5-6 years from now.

I would love to see a show set on a Prometheus Class ship that we saw in the Voyager episode Message in a Bottle or even on set on a Excelsior class ship.

I do like the majestic ship names; “Voyager” and “Discovery” were too blase.

“Prometheus” would actually be a great name, in keeping with Excelsior and Enterprise.

I never cared much for voyager much , but that clip makes me smile

Same. It wasn’t my favorite show in that era, but seeing it in Picard and again here is nice. Gives you that warm and fuzzy nostalgia feeling. I guess they “de-Borged” it by this point.

is Robert Picardo singing in this season … seems like a no-brainer

Given the general caution around spoilers, it would be better if the detail of this had been hidden from the front page. It would have been fun to only find out as I watched!! Normally this site is very good at that.

Voyager was in both trailers and has been reported on everywhere literally over a month now.

This is not news nor a ‘spoiler’. It’s been heavily advertised at this point.

I did not know that. Fair enough.

As someone who watched both “Hear All, Trust Nothing” and “Those Old Scientists” back to back recently it’s been really fun watching our lower deckers crossover into iconic ship locations and crews. Now that they are doing it again on Voyager (the ship anyway) I say make it a tradition and every year they can crossover all the legacy ships and crews.

They have name dropped the Enterprise E about 30 times now, so why not just show it at this point? She’s currently out there obviously and since we didn’t get it on Picard, now is the chance to show it and you only need a 1-2 TNG characters on it since most of the original crew have left it by now. And you can show the E-E in all of her glory with zero budget issues like we got with DS9. And then find away to hit up the NX-01 and meet up with Archer and the gang. We know that’s what McMahan wants to do anyway so as Janeway would say, do it.

Do you think people have realized that this episode is just PIC S3 setup? And in the end won’t even be about Voyager but about the crew of the Cerritos, in particular the main four? Main five? Harry Kim isn’t going to take over the episode if he even shows up lol it’s not about him but if he does show up, he’s going to be there to support the Cerritos crew, maybe even push them further towards development.

That’s what happened with every other legacy character that’s appeared on here. Riker was there to help Boimler develop. Quark was there to help Tendi develop. Kira was there so we could learn a little more about Shaxs. So now it’s Rutherford’s and Mariner’s turn.

Sweet! I’ll wake up to the season four premiere in the morning.

Or stay up for it at night! ;-)

I wonder if they are taking Voyager to Athan Prime. That would be cool!

I have to say the endless nostalgia is becoming a bit tiresome now. Think back to the 90’s era of Trek and when it happened (e.g. “Flashback”) it was really quite rare and a huge treat which was enjoyable, then we moved on to the day-to-day episodes which stood as stories and adventures in their own right.

LD has obviously always leaned heavily into the nostalgia but now all the other shows are doing it too it’s getting a bit much and I would certainly not object to it being towed back.

The day to day episodes is actually most of LD. One day they’re trying to negotiate peace and the next they’re mining rocks on some planet that ends up being a commentary on modern internet culture and how our information gets taken and used no matter what we do.

SNW is by and far a way worse offender there.

Interesting that fans seem to finally, FINALLY, be starting to sour on the *endless* references to past Trek in these new shows. The franchise has stagnated, hopefully it’s not too late to grow it again by pushing the universe forward, like TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT did.

LOL. Reddit is a teeny tiny fraction of the viewers, and those who only enjoy something if they’re endlessly complaining about it we’re so badly outnumbered by actual fans who loved Picard 3 that they pulled all their hair out trying to get a rage wave going. Now that the week to week actual fans who loved it have moved on to other shows and have other things to do, the rage addicts are declaring victory that their numbers are rising. 😂

It’s like. Do they realize that in universe it hasn’t even been a decade since Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant. The Dominion War hasn’t even reached its ten year anniversary yet either. These are events that happened within the lifetimes of the characters, for most of them within their starfleet career. For them getting to be a part of this is huge.

Just because VOY ended two decades ago for us doesn’t mean it’s not exciting. We know that Voyager gets put into the fleet museum, now we know when.

Ferenginar wanting to join the Federation is still world building, still pushing the universe forward. Rom being the Grand Nagus doesn’t change that. And of course he’d still be the grand Nagus, he’s only been it for six or seven years in universe by this point and it seems to be a lifetime position unless they decide to step down. And he has no reason to step down, he was made Grand Nagus to make sure that Ferengi society and culture changes for the better and that job isn’t over yet.

Reddit is a teeny tiny fraction of the viewers, and those who only enjoy something if they’re endlessly complaining about it we’re so badly outnumbered by actual fans who loved Picard 3 that they pulled all their hair out trying to get a rage wave going.

This is a truly bizarre response to Emily’s very cogent point, since (1) this isn’t Reddit, (2) I don’t follow Star Trek on Reddit, and (3) PICARD is sui generis — it’s about a coda to TNG, not being a flagship Star Trek series.

I post here every few months. I’m not a regular. I’m every article I’ve posted on, Emily is complaining about how terrible Star Trek is. It’s her jam.

Reddit. Social media. The comments. They’re interchangeable.

There is always a subset who enjoys complaining. They crave drama. Their meal is always sent back to the kitchen. Everyone they meet is incompetent. They derive enjoyment from complaining.

They loved the hate Disco and early Picard got. They couldn’t believe it when fans loved Picard, so now that most fans have moved on to other things they’re trying to retcon in that nostalgia is terrible and Picard 3 was a disaster. 😂

Then you need to re-read my posts because you’ve clearly misunderstood. I think Strange New Worlds is excellent. I enjoy Lower Decks a lot. The rest not so much. But 90% of my posts are to do with nostalgia, references and easter eggs current Star Trek is shoving down our throats in a cringeworthy way to get fans onboard and cheering. Sadly it seems to be working, although perhaps the tide is turning given comments on this article.

WHAT! More references to past Trek, easter eggs, and cameos?!? I. am. shocked.

I still say that Jerry Goldsmith’s theme for Voyager is the best of all the Star Trek musical themes. I know TNG theme is the more famous one but I always loved Voyager’s theme. It’s the kind of theme that gives me that feeling of truly going out into space and exploring the unknown.

Been listening to it for over 20 years now and even now when I watch an episode I always watch the opening credits as I did today.

I find it interesting when complain about “nostalgia,” since they’re complaining about this version of nostalgia, which seems to be where any story references and builds off of the Berman-era of the franchise.

Because some of the same people seem to have no problem when Strange New Worlds uses nostalgia (e.g., Khan, the Gorn, redoing “Balance of Terror,” etc.).

It also serves a purpose within the story or expands the universe in LD. It’s very rare that it doesn’t. Like damn Quark making toys now just makes the Trek universe feel more lived in.

Yeah it’s so bizarre to me when someone constantly complains about one show having too much ‘nostalgia’ but then have zero issues with other shows having nostalgia and in some cases more like SNW has done. That’s the only show in NuTrek that literally recreated an entire episode as you pointed out. And I loved it btw, but I look at all these shows as doing the exact same thing. LDS push the easter eggs the most for sure but in terms of actual character cameos or callbacks, it’s no worse than SNW or PIC and in many ways less than those because the irony about LDS is all the characters on the show are new at least. And also with the exception of Riker every legacy character who showed up so far has only been in cameo form and only one episode. And only one legacy character has ever been part of the A story which was Captain Gomez who is a pretty obscure character at best in the franchise.

Now compare that to PIC or SNW, where not only MORE legacy characters shows up, but many had arcs, at the center of episodes and in SNW case has become recurring characters like Kirk, T’Pring, April, etc. ,

Unfortunately the LD model has the incorrect geometry found in VOY’s CGI model. You can see how warped and curbed the forward phaser strips are when they should be perfectly horizontal.
