You’ll also see some of your favorite characters like C-3PO and R2-D2, as well as Captain Rex from the original attraction. He occasionally has a power surge and delivers a line from the first Star Tours ride.

Two G2 droids process passengers’ “luggage” on a scanning system that reveals the contents to you as you wait in the queue.

lando on star tours - the adventure continue

With so many story twists, you never know where you’ll go or who you may encounter on your Star Tour!

May the Force be with you as you and your fellow passengers attempt to elude capture and make it back to the base on Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.

Strollers are not allowed in most queues or theaters at Walt Disney World.

You’ll need to leave your stroller in the designated stroller parking area near the entrance to the queue at Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.

In 1986 Disney and George Lucas, the creator of  Star Wars , partnered on the Captain EO attraction, a 3-D musical film starring Michael Jackson at Disneyland. Since the partnership was so successful Disney then approached Lucas with the idea for Star Tours.

The original Star Tours ride opened on January 9, 1987 in California’s Disneyland. Two years later, Star Tours opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, then known as Disney’s MGM Studios.

Set in the  Star Wars  universe, the motion simulator attraction sent guests on a tour to Endor, where they got caught in an altercation between the New Republic and an Imperial Remnant. The attraction featured Captain “Rex” RX-24 along with series regulars R2-D2 and C-3PO.

In 1998, Disney began planning to upgrade Star Tours as part of the release of the upcoming 1999 film  Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace , the first film of the new prequel trilogy.

This version would be in 3D and feature new flights. However, since more films for the franchise were in pre-production, officials chose to wait until 2003 when production began on  Revenge of the Sith  before remodeling Star Tours.

In April 2005, at  Star Wars  Celebration III, creator George Lucas confirmed that a revamp of Star Tours was in production. Then at the 2009 D23 Expo it was announced that Star Tours at Disneyland and Hollywood Studios would close in October 2010 for renovations.

The rides would reopen in May and June 2011 as Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.

On August 14, 2010, Hollywood Studios hosted the “Last Tour To Endor” event for Celebration V attendees. This extravaganza included an appearance by George Lucas, character appearances, Jedi Training Academy, Death Star Disco,  Raiders Of The Lost Jedi Temple of Doom: A Fan Film of Epic Proportions  live show, Hyperspace Hoopla, and  Symphony in the Stars  fireworks.

star tours rise of skywalker concept art

It also included the Star Tours shutdown ceremony which was a live show with C-3PO, R2-D2, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, as well as a few Stormtroopers, culminating in the official power-down of Star Tours.

The ride remained open until September 7, 2010, when the attraction held its “Final Flight to Endor” for D23 members.

In Orlando, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue began soft openings on May 14, 2011, with the official opening held at midnight on May 20, 2011.

Since its opening, the planet Jakku from  The Force Awakens  has been added to the attraction as well as the planet Crait from  The Last Jedi  and Batuu, from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Finally, the ocean moon Kef Bir from  The Rise of Skywalker  was added on December 20, 2019, the film’s release date.

In 2023, Disney announced at Destination D23 that Ahoska would be added to Star Tours in spring 2024 .

Other Fun Details

  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue is inspired by all nine films of the Star Wars Skywalker saga: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Episode IV – A New Hope, Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Empire VI – Return of the Jedi, Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, and Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker .
  • There are Star Tours attractions at four different Disney Parks around the world: Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland in California.

at at outside star tours

  • The exteriors of all four Star Tours attractions are different in their respective parks. The attraction in Florida is inspired by an Ewok village on the forest moon of Endor.
  • Listen closely just before boarding your spaceship. You may hear a reference to THX1138. THX1138 was in all of the Star Wars movies because it was the name of George Lucas’ first movie, so he included it in all of the Star Wars films as a nod to his origin.
  • Other boarding call announcements in the first area of the indoor wait queue gives names that are actually anagrams for people like  Star Wars  creator George Lucas (“Egroeg Sacul”) and Tom Morrow (“Mot Worrom”). When you reach the baggage check area, many different Disney attractions and franchises like Haunted Mansion ,  Toy Story, Aladdin, WALL-E, The Incredibles , and  Captain EO get cameos as G2-9T scans boarding IDs.
  • Paul Reubens, perhaps better known for his famous character, Pee Wee Herman, was actually the voice of Captain RX-24 (Rex) in the original Star Tours ride. He was the pilot talking as R2-D2 was being loaded. In the new version of the ride, you can see him in the droid maintenance section in the queue.

c3p0 on star tours

  • Patrick Warburton, who is known for delivering the safety spiel before boarding Soarin’ at Epcot and for also voicing Kronk in Emperor’s New Groove , is the voice of security officer G2-4Ton Star Tours — The Adventures Continue. You can spot him as you pass through a series of security scanners.
  • As part of the attraction, you’ll see scenes with archival footage of Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher. The dialogue, however, is re-recorded. Carrie Fisher collaborated with Imagineers to re-record her dialogue so that it fits the attraction seamlessly.
  • While the original Star Tours ride didn’t open until 1989, Imagineers originally had an idea for a simulator ride themed to another Disney movie. The 1979 live-action film  The Black Hole  followed astronauts investigating a mysterious spaceship inside a black hole, but it was a commercial flop. This, combined with the high costs for the planned ride, led to the concept being scrapped. It wasn’t until Disney partnered with George Lucas and Lucasfilm in 1986, that the simulator idea was revisited, this time with Star Wars in mind.

New, Realistic Lightsaber to Appear as Part of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Experience graphic

Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser Launches in 2022 at Walt Disney World Resort

Jeremy Schoolfield

by Jeremy Schoolfield , Walt Disney Imagineering Communications Manager

Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will take you to a galaxy far, far away for an all-immersive, two-night vacation experience that goes beyond anything Disney has ever created before. What exactly does “all-immersive” mean? Well, in honor of May the 4 th , here’s a little hint…

Not sure if what you just saw is actually what you just saw? Maybe you should watch it one more time. Or 10.

New, Realistic Lightsaber to Appear as Part of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Experience

Yes, that’s a new type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development. Guests who experience Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser will be the first to see it in action – along with so much more – starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts. Watching that lightsaber activate right before your eyes will be just one of the countless ways that, from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart, you’ll be plunged into a Star Wars story where your decisions and actions – or even the casual conversations you may have – determine how your personal journey unfolds.

star wars star tours disney world

Your adventure begins at the Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser terminal at Walt Disney World, where you’ll gather with fellow passengers before departing for your intergalactic destination. You’ll soon enter a special Launch Pod and leave your world behind as you make a hyperspace jump to a galaxy far, far away.

A model of the Halcyon starcruiser is viewable by guests for a limited time in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

You’ll watch through viewports as you approach the massive and magnificent Halcyon starcruiser, which will be your home for the next two nights. For a limited time, Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests can now see a model of the ship on display inside Walt Disney Presents – another special May the 4 th surprise!

When the Launch Pod’s airlock slides open, you’ll take your first step into a galaxy far, far away as Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser comes to life all around you. During your stay aboard this glamorous ship, you may interact with an eclectic group of characters both familiar and new, possibly including the starcruiser’s strong and charismatic captain, a plucky ship’s mechanic and a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger.

Crown of Corellia Dining Room in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

This singing sensation will be a featured performer during one of your exquisite dining experiences inside the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, which you can see in this artist concept rendering we’re sharing today for the first time. The enticing supper club’s name is an homage to Corellia, the planet known galaxy-wide for its shipyards that gave us not only the Halcyon starcruiser, but also the Millennium Falcon . The dining room is a bright and welcoming hall that will offer breakfast and lunch to passengers before transitioning each evening into a lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Lightsaber Training

As your journey continues, you’ll have the opportunity to train in the ancient ways of the lightsaber, learn more about the inner workings of the Halcyon starcruiser and even jump on a transport to the planet Batuu to further your adventure inside Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge. This isn’t storytelling – it’s storyliving , where you’ll see, feel and live Star Wars in a whole new way.

We’ll have much more to share about Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser in the future as we look forward to its 2022 debut; you can always visit starwarsgalacticstarcruiser.com for more details, and sign up there to receive updates.

And since it’s May the 4 th , let’s check out a few other Star Wars happenings at Walt Disney World in honor of this special day.

Is the hotel going to actually fly?

Question: Is the hotel ACTUALLY going to fly? If so, HOW?

It should be open to everyone, not just to pass holders or DVC owners, everyone is entitled to the experience, no mater their status. Disney is supposed to be fair company!

I think Disney should give their Passholder’s first option to stay there when it opens JMO

Looks fantastic! Can’t wait to experience the Galactic Starcruiser and hopefully bring home a retractable lightsaber in 2022. It’ll be worth the experience just to have a guaranteed ride on Rise of the Resistance too. LOL.

I have been following this project for quite some time and as a Star Wars fan, I am beyond excited for this. My husband and I got married on May 4, 2018 and I was hoping we could spend our 5 year anniversary there. So excited it could be a reality!

Star Wars Rides at Walt Disney World- History, Tips, Plus the BEST Ride at Disney

Star Wars Rides at Walt Disney World- History, Tips, Plus the BEST Ride at Disney

Believe it or not, the Star Wars franchise has a long history with Disney – and it dates back to long before Disney’s acquisition of LucasFilm. And good thing too, because without their relationship, we wouldn’t be enjoying all of the Star Wars rides at Walt Disney World.

The Disney-Star Wars relationship gifted guests with multiple rides, new characters to meet, lightsabers to buy, and an entirely new land to explore. Lucky for you, we’re massive Star Wars fans who visit the Walt Disney World theme parks regularly and love to share what there is to know. Let’s go over the Star Wars rides at Walt Disney World and give you a guide on the big Star Wars rides at Disney World to experience: Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.

In this article:

The Ride That Started it all: Star Tours

Star Wars rides at Disney World

George Lucas, the man behind Star Wars, has been a Disney fan ever since he was a child. In fact, he first visited Disneyland during its opening week in 1955. So it was no surprise that after Star Wars became such a big hit in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Lucas partnered with Disney CEO Michael Eisner to develop a Star Wars-themed ride for Disneyland, and eventually Walt Disney World.

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue opened in December 1989 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Located between Grand Avenue and Commissary Lane, this was Disneyland’s and Walt Disney World’s first modern simulator ride where guests can ride in a flight simulator modeled after the ones used for training pilots and astronauts.

The Ride Queue: It’s Like Walking on Endor!

Star Wars rides at Disney World

In true Disney fashion, the ride queue takes guests out of Walt Disney World and through the forest of Endor, with an Ewok village overhead. Guests even get to walk right under a massive AT-AT! The queue inside the show building gives off an airport feel (or a “Starport” in the Star Wars universe). Next to the life-sized Starspeeder, a large video screen displays a list of arrival and departure times to familiar Star Wars destinations.

In the ride queue, guests also get to see a small droid examining luggage moving through an x-ray machine. Stay sharp, because you never know what familiar things you might see in that x-ray machine! Just before boarding your Starspeeder, pay attention to another droid who takes body scans of guests in line. That droid will sound oddly familiar if you’ve ridden Soarin’ over the World over at EPCOT (or Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove!).

Similar to other rides at Walt Disney World, wait times tend to be best in the morning shortly after the park opens and in the evening after 6pm. While the standby queue for this ride has a lot to fun details to experience, Star Tours does offer Lightning Lane via Genie+ so that guests can save time. This ride is also Early Entry eligible, meaning it will open 30 minutes before the official park opens every day for Walt Disney World resort guests only.

Star Wars Rides at Disney World: Why You’ll Want to Ride Again and Again

Star Wars rides at Disney World

The pre-boarding video overhead shows a series of mishaps that causes your Starspeeder to launch too soon, with our familiar Star Wars friend C-3PO finding himself in the cockpit of your starship. A droid on the video then gives guests the necessary safety precautions before boarding the ride.

Soon after your Starspeeder takes flight, guests find out there is a Rebel spy on board. Make sure to keep your eye on the small video screen to the right. No spoilers here, so ride the attraction to see what we mean!

The beauty of this Walt Disney World ride is its re-rideability factor. With 54 different ride combinations, guests never know what they might experience. Possibilities include visiting popular Star Wars destinations like Hoth, Naboo, and Tatooine and encountering characters like Boba Fett, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader.

After landing (as safely as possible under C-3PO’s piloting), guests exit through the Tatooine Traders gift shop, which contains enough Star Wars merchandise for your heart’s content.

Star Tours: Important Information to Know When Riding

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Since the ride is a flight simulator that features jolting action, Disney recommends that guests who are expectant mothers or are dealing with back or neck problems should avoid riding. Star Tours also features digital 3D video (requiring 3D glasses) and various special effects that may affect guests who are sensitive to motion.

The height restriction is 40 inches for children and children under the age of 7 are not admitted onto the ride without a person age 14 years or older. For those who travel to Walt Disney World with kids who cannot ride this attraction, Star Tours does offer a “Ride Switch” option, which allows one adult guest to take turns riding while the other waits in line with their child.

If using an ECV at Walt Disney World, guests must be able to transfer into a wheelchair for the queue and then transfer into the ride vehicle. For the hearing impaired, audio and assistive listening as well as handheld captioning available. Finally, service animals are not allowed on this ride.

Galaxy’s Edge: The Mecca of Star Wars Rides at Walt Disney World

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Thirty years after the opening of Star Tours at Walt Disney World, guests were able to expand their own adventures into the far reaches of space at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. According to the Walt Disney Company, “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the largest and most technologically advanced single-themed land expansion ever in a Disney Park” and is “one of the most ambitious, advanced, and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering.” Both Star Wars fans and non-Star Wars fans alike can step foot into this land and can easily understand why.

The Star Wars Offerings are Truly Endless

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Shortly after entering Batuu (the name of this Star Wars planet), guests feel like they leave Walt Disney World and truly immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe. Guests can grab a bite to eat at Ronto Roasters, where a pod racer heats up their food. For more food options, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo offers a variety of Star Wars themed food inside of a cargo loading area. Guests looking for an alcoholic beverage can mosey into Oga’s Cantina (with a dining reservation) to enjoy drinks in an atmosphere similar to the Mos Eisley Cantina. For an even funner experience, guests can try blue or green milk from the Milk Stand.

If Tatooine Traders didn’t give you enough Star Wars merchandise, dive deeper into Galaxy’s Edge with absolutely everything Star Wars-related, including Sabacc, the popular Star Wars game, Jedi or First order clothing, or lightsabers modeled after the ones used by popular Star Wars characters.

Need something more interactive at Walt Disney World? Interact with popular Star Wars characters walking around the land. Play interactive games on your data pad (Star Wars lingo for the Play Disney Parks app on your mobile device). For those yearning for more, build your own droid at the Droid Depot or better yet, build and customize your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop. The possibilities are endless!

Enough about these offerings though! You came here to read all about the two major attractions in this land as part of the best Star Wars rides at Disney World.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Star Wars rides at Disney World

The first of the two Star Wars rides at Disney World that opened in Galaxy’s Edge, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run gives guests the chance to fly Han Solo’s legendary Millennium Falcon, the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy,” on a mission for the pirate Hondo Ohnaka. Located between Oga’s Cantina and Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, this ride is hard to miss. The life-sized Falcon greets Walt Disney World guests and makes for a stunning photo backdrop.

While the entrance to both the standby and Lightning Lane queues is right next to the Millennium Falcon, don’t hesitate to stick around the Falcon. You never know who might show up to tinker around with this hunk of junk!

The Ride Queue: It’s all in the Details

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Straight away, the queue for this ride is lengthy – be prepared to walk and stand around a lot! However, Imagineers at Walt Disney World made up for the length of the queue with its immersiveness. Guests get to walk through an engine room, mechanic shop, and get wonderful views of the Falcon from above. It’s a wonderful experience for both Star Wars fans and non-Star Wars fans alike. Don’t forget to take advantage of the interactive queue that guests can experience through the Play Disney Parks app!

Similar to other rides at Walt Disney World, wait times tend to be best in the morning shortly after the park opens and in the evening after 6pm. Smugglers Run does offer Lightning Lane via Genie+ as well as a Single Rider line so that guests can save time. Keep in mind that even if your whole group joins the Single Rider line, you will all likely be separated when it comes time to board. This ride is also Early Entry eligible, meaning it will open 30 minutes before the official park open everyday for Walt Disney World resort guests only.

Toward the end of the queue, the pre-show takes place in Hondo Ohnaka’s command center, where Hondo explains the mission he has for you. So his story goes, Hondo cut a deal with Chewbacca to use the falcon for some… sketchy… transportation business.

After the ride pre-show, guests enter the Falcon through an umbilical bridge and are assigned to a flight crew of up to six people. While waiting for your turn, you can explore the ship’s main hold – a life-sized recreation of the beloved Falcon from the Star Wars movies!

The Ride is a Supersized Arcade Game

Star Wars rides at Disney World

When called, your flight crew heads toward the Falcon’s cockpit. Your mission: steal supplies from the First Order to sell on the black market. Each rider receives their role: the pilot and copilot steers the ship and activates hyperdrive, two gunners shoot down enemy fighters, and two engineers repair the ship when needed.

While similar to the flight simulator that Star Tours uses, Smugglers Run is different from other Walt Disney World rides in that it uses buttons, switches, and levers to make for a more interactive experience. Think of it like an arcade game on an astronomical level! When riding, watch for the indicator rings to light up around key controls to clue you in on when to use them. Additionally, the ultra-HD domed video screens in front of the cockpit aren’t attached to the ride vehicle, making the ride seem more realistic and reducing the potential for motion sickness.

Smugglers Run: Important Information to Know When Riding

Star Wars rides at Disney World

In the end, since the ride is a flight simulator with intense high speed moments, Disney recommends that guests should be “in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back, or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.”

The height restriction is 38 inches for children and children under the age of 7 are not admitted onto the ride without a person age 14 years or older. For those who traveled to Walt Disney World with kids who cannot ride this attraction, Smugglers Run does offer a “Ride Switch” option just like Star Tours.

Guests using an ECV or wheelchair at Walt Disney World can use their assistive device for the queue and then must transfer into the ride vehicle. For the hearing impaired, audio and assistive listening as well as handheld captioning available. Finally, service animals are not allowed on this ride.

The (Not so Secret) Mode to Unlock: Chewie Mode

Rey and Chewy

One final feature about this fun ride: Many Walt Disney World guests heard of Chewie Mode, which when unlocked, will allow guests to hear Chewbacca’s voice during the entire ride instead of Hondo’s voice. To unlock this mode, guests must do the following before the Cast Member leaves their cockpit to start their ride:

  • Pilots must push their controls to the extreme left/right or up/down, hold that position, and then hit their activation button.
  • Gunners must press and hold one of the white buttons directly next to their display and then press their activation button.

Let’s move on to the final (and arguably the most exciting) Star Wars ride at Walt Disney World.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance

Tucked into a scrubland forest soon after entering Galaxy’s Edge from Grand Avenue is a mobile Resistance gun turret marking the entrance of the ride. Set some time during the Star Wars trilogy sequel, this ride fully immerses guests in a battle between the Resistance and the First Order, featuring popular Star Wars characters such as Rey, BB-8, and Kylo Ren.

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Similar to the queue for Smugglers Run, this ride queue is also very lengthy. Additionally, the first part of the standby queue is outdoors, so be prepared to spend time in the Florida heat (and possibly rain). Despite its length, it’s also very immersive and full of details. Guests eventually find themselves inside a resistance base with plenty of Star Wars artifacts along the way. Just like Smugglers run, this is also an interactive queue that guests can enjoy courtesy of the Play Disney Parks app.

Similar to other rides at Walt Disney World, wait times tend to be best in the morning shortly after the park opens and in the evening after 6pm. Rise of the Resistance is far-and-away the more popular of the two rides at Galaxy’s Edge, so don’t be surprised to see standby wait times balloon past 60 minutes. Additionally, this ride is notorious for breaking down frequently, which can easily add 30 minutes or more to the standby wait time. Just like Smugglers Run, this ride is also Early Entry eligible, meaning it will open 30 minutes before the official park open everyday for Walt Disney World resort guests only.

Guests can also purchase an Individual Lightning Lane via Genie+ to save time, especially if this ride is a priority. Individual Lightning Lanes go fast, so grab one as soon as selections open. These times are 7am for Walt Disney world resort guests on the morning of their theme park visit and at park open for all other guests.

The Ride Pre-Show “Wows” Guests Every Time

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Inside the Resistance military outpost, BB-8 rolls in to initiate the pre-show, accompanied by a hologram of Rey, who recruits you to fight the First Order. Guests then board a standing-room-only shuttlecraft piloted by Liuetenant Bek. All is well until a Star Destroyer captures your shuttlecraft in its tractor beam and takes you into its belly.

When your shuttlecraft reopens, guests truly feel like they’re inside of the massive spacecraft that took them prisoner, complete with an army of Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters, and a bay window looking into outer space. First Order officers (Cast Members) then herd their prisoners into holding rooms to await interrogation by Kylo Ren and General Hux.

The Most Technologically Advanced Ride at Walt Disney World

Star Wars rides at Disney World

Just when all hope is lost, Resistance fighters come through and free guests from their cell, guiding them to an escape pod. This is where you board your ride vehicle. The entire ride then follows your escape from the Star Destroyer ship. Guests enter an 8-passenger troop transport with an animatronic droid driver, then set off on a thrilling ride full of animatronic characters and enormous sets with video projections making for an incredible ride environment.

Guests get to ride beneath the legs of two towering AT-ATs whil dodging laser fire, come face-to-face with Kylo Ren himself, and board an escape pod to crash land back to Batuu. This heart-stopping multi-story plunge enhanced by digital projections is not as intense as Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, but it’s an incredibly exciting way to cap off this Star Wars Ride.

Rise of the Resistance is (and arguably will be for a while) the most technologically innovative ride at Walt Disney World. This ride integrates at least 4 different ride experiences of past Walt Disney world attractions: trackless ride vehicles, a motion simulator, walk-through environments, and an elevator drop. It’s difficult to truly grasp what this all amounts to until you ride it for yourself!

And yes, you read that right: an elevator drop! All-in-all, this ride can be scary at times for kids, even ones who love Star Wars. The elevator drop, darker areas, and character interactions (especially with the First Order) may be too much for some.

Rise of the Resistance: Important Information to Know When Riding

Star Wars Rise of the Resistance

In the end, Rise of the Resistance is a simulator ride with intense high-speed moments and life-like sensations of flying and falling. Guests may experience motion sickness on this ride. Disney recommends that guests should be “in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back, or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.”

The height restriction is 40 inches for children and children under the age of 7 are not admitted onto the ride without a person age 14 years or older. For those who traveled to Walt Disney World with kids who cannot ride this attraction, Rise of the Resistance does offer a “Ride Switch” option just like Star Tours and Smugglers Run.

Guests using an ECV or wheelchair at Walt Disney World can use their assistive device on the entire queue and part of the attraction. They then must transfer into the ride vehicle. For the hearing impaired, audio and assistive listening as well as handheld captioning available.

Every year, Walt Disney World closes certain attractions or experiences for refurbishment. However, for 2024, there are no Star Wars rides scheduled for closing at Walt Disney World.

Star wars guided tour at walt disney world’s hollywood studios.

Posted by: PaulaK February 23, 2019

star wars star tours disney world

Walt Disney World offers a variety of special tours that will take you behind the scenes. It’s always fun to get a peek at how the magic is made. When Disney recently offered me the opportunity to take the Star Wars Guided Tour as their guest, I didn’t even have to look at my calendar. I’ve been an obsessed Star Wars fan since 1977, and this tour was at the top of my “someday soon” list.

The tour I went on took place on February 22, and it started around 8:00, which was an hour before the park opened. Our guides were Hannah and Darion, and they were both fantastic. They explained that they both had to show a real love and appreciation for Star Wars before getting the position. I was glad to learn this, because I think that it gave them a real respect for what they were doing. They felt like it was their responsibility to give those of us on the tour bits of insight that we would not have received otherwise.

Once we entered the park, we headed to Sar Tours – The Adventures Continue. It was pointed out that the trees were not finished and that the back of the AT-AT was also incomplete. That’s because when Disney-MGM Studios opened back in 1989 guests were supposed to feel as if they were in a working studio. The original Star Tours opened that same year, and the attraction was supposed to have the same feel. We then went inside, for the first ride of the day. The audio was off, which gave the queue a different feel. I’ve ridden Star Tours a few times (over 250), but this was the first time without the audio in the queue. Our guides pointed out the pipes in the middle of the first room. They have initials and codes on them, things like HF for Harrison Ford and JEJ for James Earl Jones. We also learned that the two scanning droids have webbed feet and tails, which is a nod to a former attraction at Disneyland. On Star Tours – The Adventures Continue you’ll ride in a Starspeeder 1000. In the original Star Tours ride it was a Starspeeder 3000, making the current version a prequel.

star wars star tours disney world

Next we moved on to Star Wars: Path of the Jedi. This is a short film that focuses on the Skywalker Saga. It is a seasonal attraction, and during the off season the only way to see it is to take the Star Wars Guided Tour. The movie is a great overview of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker. If someone has not seen the movies in a while it’s a nice refresher course.

We then went across the park to Star Wars Launch Bay. If you look at the outside of the building, you’ll notice that it looks dirty. George Lucas wanted things to look realistic instead of shiny and clean within the Star Wars universe, and Disney has kept that going.

star wars star tours disney world

Once inside Launch Bay we went to the meet and greets. Our lanyards had planets on the back, and we were broken into three groups, according to the planets. That was because there are three different character greetings in Launch Bay. The park was open by this time, and we had front of the line privileges. We did receive a few dirty looks from those who were waiting, but the groups weren’t big so we weren’t too disruptive. The three characters that you’ll meet inside Launch Bay are BB-8, Chewbacca, and Kylo Ren.

star wars star tours disney world

We then explored the rest of Launch Bay a bit. We spent some time in the room that is currently featuring Solo: A Star Wars Story . While many of the props and costumes inside Launch Bay are replicas, there are some that were actually in the movie. These are marked with, “loan courtesy of Lucasfilm Ltd.” at the bottom of the description plaque. Moving on, we learned that the speeder bike and the pod racer inside Launch Bay were also both used in the films. There’s one display that features Rey and her speeder. These were created on a 3D printer.

star wars star tours disney world

Also in Star Wars Launch Bay there is a short film. I believe that they said it is called Meet the Makers . If you haven’t watched the film in a while, make sure that you do. I hadn’t seen it in a couple of years, and a lot has changed.

After Launch Bay we gathered on the side, while our guides talked “in private”. We were wearing ear pieces and they knew that we could hear everything that they were saying. They discussed the big surprise that they had for us. We then went to the front of the park, where our group took part in March of the First Order. To a lifelong Star Wars fan like me, this was one of the best parts of the day. We marched behind the Stormtroopers, then we had a reserved section up front for the stage show. It was exciting.

star wars star tours disney world

Lunch was at Backlot Express , and it is included in the price. We placed our orders when we checked in for the tour, and it was brought to us in a reserved seating area. We were also given a couple of gifts; a Darth Vader stein and a BB-8 pin. There was writing in Aurebesh on the pin, but our lanyard included an Aurebesh  decoder. (It said “traveler”.) The pins are currently available only on the Star Wars Guided Tour. There was a great surprise at lunch. We were joined by two Stormtroopers. They were looking for Resistance sympathizers, as well as taking pictures with guests. The Stormtroopers are part of the lunch each tour, unless it’s raining. The reason for that is because they need to make their way across the park.

star wars star tours disney world

Our tour included a stop at Walt Disney Presents. This is where the partial model of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge can be found. We weren’t given any new information on the upcoming land, although our guides did tell us enough information that we already knew to keep us excited. They also mentioned the upcoming Star Wars hotel, and how what you do within the land could even follow you back to the hotel if you’re staying there. For instance, if you failed your mission on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, they will know about it if you’re lucky enough to be staying at the hotel. That’s how immersive the experience will be.

star wars star tours disney world

The tour ended with a reserved viewing area for Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away. This is the live stage show that features clips as well as characters. It runs several times a day, but the reserved area is only for the one show.

star wars star tours disney world

If you have kids the right age with you, their spots in Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple are secured with the Star Wars Guided Tour. At the end of the night, tour guests also receive reserved viewing for Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular. The guides told everyone where to go for that. It is the same place where people who sign up for the Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party watch, but the dessert party is not included with the tour.

Star Wars Guided Tour takes place each day of the week except for Sundays. It lasts approximately five hours, not including the fireworks viewing. The cost is $99 per person, including tax. Theme park admission is required and not included, and there is no child’s rate. Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and Disney Visa Cardholders are currently eligible for a 15 percent discount. For more information or to make your reservation, call 407-WDW-PLAY (407-939-7529).

I’d like to thank Walt Disney World for inviting me to join them on the Star Wars Guided Tour. For an obsessed fan like me, it was the perfect way to spend a good part of my day!
