The Jacobite Steam Train

Jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. While experiencing one of the world’s greatest train journeys. The railway line curves over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, now immortalised in Harry Potter films as the route to Hogwarts.

You’ll travel through the heart of Scotland’s wild west coast and get up close to majestic mountains and sparkling lochs. At the head of Loch Shiel you’ll then capture the iconic vista of the Glenfinnan Monument. This is the historic location where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745. It was a passionate but ill-fated attempt to restore the exiled Stuarts to the Great Britain and Ireland throne. The monument, crowned with a lone piper, stands in silent tribute to the clansmen who died fighting the Jacobite cause.

This tour is only available as a private tour for 2022.

You may wish to add to your tour and take a return journey on the Jacobite Steam Train. This would mean taking a 2 day tour with an overnight stay before returning to the lowlands. Alternatively, you could choose to personalise the stops on route to the train instead. The choice is yours.

You can find out more by filling in the Private Tour form.

Scotland: A Classic Scottish Steam Break

Scotland: A Classic Scottish Steam Break

Steam locomotion has an enduring fascination for many of us and combined with the wonderful scenery of Scotland it becomes utterly irresistible.  The Jacobite Steam Train , from Fort William to Mallaig, is one of the longest steam-hauled rail journeys available in Britain today, an 84-mile round trip through some spectacular scenery, which features an impressive list of superlatives. It starts near Britain’s highest mountain, (Ben Nevis), passes its most westerly mainland railway station, (Arisaig), deepest freshwater loch, (Loch Morar), shortest river, (River Morar) and finally arrives next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, (Loch Nevis). ‘Concrete Bob’ McAlpine’s 21-arch Glenfinnan viaduct is just one of the engineering marvels we encounter on our journey, which is made all the more enjoyable by the sound and fury of the steam locomotive at the head of our train, forging its way along the Iron Road to the Isles.

A gentler pace is set as we sail ‘Doon ra Watter’ on the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, the  PS Waverley*,  still elegantly plying her trade on the Clyde. There can be no better way to enjoy the gentle beauty of the Argyll hills and the Kyles of Bute than from the deck of this grand old lady. We also enjoy a relaxed and informative cruise aboard the steam-powered Sir Walter Scott, on the calm waters of  Loch Katrine  amid the spectacular scenery of the Trossachs.

Our tour also includes a unique boat journey on the  Falkirk Wheel , the world’s first rotating boat lift. The Falkirk Wheel is part of the biggest canal restoration project ever undertaken in Britain, as a result of which the Union and the Forth & Clyde canals, both over 180 years old, are once again linked together and fully operational.

*Please note that the itinerary is subject to the Waverley’s sailing schedule. Should the Waverley not be sailing, an alternative excursion will be provided, featuring a boat trip on Loch Lomond and a guided tour of Inveraray Castle and Gardens.

Full Tour Itinerary

The mystery and majesty of  Loch Ness  come into view as we head west from Inverness. Don’t take your eyes off the loch in case Nessie,  The Loch Ness Monster  pops her head up to say hello!

Admire the spectacular Great Glen as we drive towards snow-dusted Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain. Pausing at the viewpoint allows us to fully appreciate this natural wonder so don’t forget your camera.

In Fort William the excitement mounts as we first set our eyes on the  Jacobite Steam Train . Once used to whisk Harry, Ron and Hermione to school in the Harry Potter films, we sink into a plush seat on a vintage carriage as the guard blows his whistle and we embark on the journey of a lifetime.

Britain’s deepest loch and shortest river whizz by as the truly spectacular  Glenfinnan Viaduct  – also seen in Harry Potter – leaves a lasting impression, history coming to life as we pass the Glenfinnan Monument, marking the start of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.

On arrival in the historic fishing town of Mallaig we’ll have some free time for lunch, before we rejoin our minicoach and our journey continues along the scenic " Road to the Isles " back through Glenfinnan and on to Fort Augustus, where we'll make a stop to explore this delightful village.

The last part of our journey takes us along the quiet southern shores of Loch Ness where we'll make a stop to see the cascading waters of the  Falls of Foyers  and the breathtaking views from Dores Beach.

“You could spend a month juggling maps, timetables and guidebooks without coming anywhere near the company’s expertise and astute choice of stopovers, hotels and guest houses … It has been a truly grand ‘grand tour'”.  Stephen McClarence, The Times , December 2016

West Highland Line Train Holidays

There is perhaps no more illustrious train journey in Scotland than that of the West Highland Line .  Made famous by the ever-popular ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, people flock from far and wide to take in the breath-taking scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Running between Fort William and Mallaig, the most memorable part of your trip will be the moment you cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct – renowned for its cinematic beauty.  We also provide the opportunity to add a stay on the picturesque Isle of Skye for those who want to experience a slice of island life to conclude their trip.

Far North Line Holidays

Take a rail journey north and you will discover a more remote, uninhabited Scotland. You will stop in isolated stations surrounded only by untamed scenery. Some of the country’s finest rivers, bog land and daunting mountains are nestled here. The locale is a little wilder than you may be used to – peer out the window and you might catch a glimpse of a scampering deer or a soaring eagle. Perhaps you will spend a couple of days on the mysterious island of Orkney – your journey doesn’t need to conclude at the end of the railway line, after all.

Tailormade Scotland Train Tours

If you are starting your UK travels from London, it takes just four hours to reach Edinburgh by train, and a little longer to Glasgow. Both are easy gateway cities for a Scottish rail tour. An alternative option is to journey overnight on the Caledonian Sleeper into the heart of the Highlands . Experience the romance of leaving the hustle and bustle of England’s capital behind to awake surrounded by Highland splendour.

We plan our rail holidays to ensure you can experience a rich variety of the landscapes that Scotland has to offer, including remote areas that could not be accessed otherwise, such as the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor .

Travel to the edge of the mainland, skirting a coastline shared with many of the country’s wild and enchanting islands . We include private taxi transfers and ferry tickets where necessary to join things up, just in case the train line doesn’t go as far as your dream destination.

Small Group Guided Rail Tours

Turn your tour of Scotland into an in-depth journey of discovery on one of our unique week-long guided rail tours . With group sizes limited to a maximum of 15 and the services of a knowledgeable, McKinlay Kidd tour leader throughout, you can be sure of personal attention. Explore legendary spots, including Skye & Glencoe , the North Highlands & Orkney   and the Outer Hebrides . Absorb the spirituality of the Isle of Iona while also hearing tales of Scotland’s birth and ancient kings as you travel the West Highland Line. Unravel the mysteries of Loch Ness and take a trip on the Jacobite steam train.

The Pendle Dalesman - Steam along the S&C - Running Tuesdays (Steam both outbound and return)

2022 Season has now finished

Departing from Lancaster, Preston, Blackburn and Clitheroe

Running Tuesday's on 18 th and 25 th May, 8 th  and 29 th June, 20 th and 27 th July, 10 th , 17 th and 31 st August and 21 st September 2021

Join us for a great day out to remember aboard our heritage steam hauled train which will take you on a scenic journey along the Settle and Carlisle line.

From the comfort of your seat in some of the oldest working carriages in operation today, your adventure begins! Some of these carriages served throughout the golden age of rail, some featured in the Harry Potter movies and have all been lovingly restored. These traditional carriages will be hauled by a beautifully restored steam locomotive from your departure points. At Hellifield the line traverses North Yorkshire for an ever-favourite journey on the Settle and Carlisle Railway. Enjoy the stunning Dales scenery as we make our way through Settle and over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct. Continuing north from Ribblehead we plunge into Blea Moor tunnel, the longest on the line. We then enjoy sweeping views along Dentdale as we pass through the highest station on the line, Dent. The stunning scenery continues as we head north to the more gentle landscape of the Eden Valley, the Eden Gorge and our destination - the border city of Carlisle.

See www.settle-carlisle.co.uk.

CARLISLE:  We anticipate an afternoon arrival time offering a couple of hours or so break. This great border city dominates the borderlands between England and Scotland, sitting within the vale between the Cumbrian Mountains and Scottish Southern Uplands. In Carlisle you’ll find yourself at the centre of a stirring past and a vibrant present. Many of the city’s eateries and licensed premises are just a few minutes’ walk from the station entrance and if you visit www.historic-carlisle.org.uk you will find information to help you plan ahead. And for those who would prefer to use their short break to wander around in the beautiful and historic heart of the city you may choose to visit the castle, cathedral or indeed the Tullie House Museum.

After a break of around two hours in Carlisle, we return along the Settle to Carlisle line behind our vintage steam engine for the final part of our journey to your home stations.

In the event of fire risk, FBU action or the unlikely failure of steam traction we reserve the right to substitute all or part of the journey with a heritage diesel without any liability being incurred and any reimbursement or vouchers issued.

THE SETTLE TO CARLISLE LINE

First opening to passengers in 1876, the Settle - Carlisle line takes in 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels and countless beautiful vistas along its 72 mile track. This historic line travels across the stunning Pennine hills, showcasing the English countryside at its best.

From Hellifield one of the oldest steam engines in service today is a sight to behold as the engine builds up sufficient steam for the highlight of your journey on the famous Settle to Carlisle line.

steam train day trips scotland 2022

SETTLE STATION

The station first opened in May 1876 and was originally named 'Settle New' to distinguish it from the nearby station on a different route, and has a beautiful large Derby Gothic style station building.

RIBBLEHEAD VIADUCT

The Ribblehead Viaduct is an impressive feat of engineering 28 miles north-west of Skipton in Yorkshire. The Grade II listed structure, designed by engineer John Sydney Crossley. 1.5 million bricks were used in its construction, with some of the blocks weighing 8 tons each.

DENT STATION

The highest mainline railway station in England. In the past steam locomotives were able to pick up water from troughs here whilst still moving.

DENT HEAD & ARTEN GILL VIADUCTS

Two of the most impressive structures on the line, they are are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Arten Gill Viaduct is constructed from 'Dent marble' - a dark limestone with high fossil content, and has eleven impressive arches.

BLEA MOOR TUNNEL

Located between Ribblehead Viaduct and Dent station, it is the longest tunnel on the line. Rise Hill Tunnel. Built by the Midland Railway, it passes 500 feet below the moor after which it was named.

The Scotland/England border city, the Romans established a settlement here to service the forts of Hadrian's Wall. Carlisle castle has watched over the city for over 9 centuries, and has witnessed many important moments in British history.

Premier Dining: On the outward journey passengers will be served a full English breakfast with complimentary Buck´s Fizz. Champagne and canapés followed by a delicious four course dinner accompanied by a quarter bottle of wine, will be served on the return journey. A complimentary service of tea or coffee on both journeys. We kindly ask that passengers do not consume their own alcoholic drinks in Premier Dining Class.

We are able to offer a vegetarian menu with 7 days advance notification but regretfully we are unable to offer any other special dietary requirements (i.e. nut allergy, vegan, gluten free diets etc).

Premier First Class: Passengers will be served a breakfast roll on the outward leg and freshly made sandwiches, a scone, jam and butter will be served on the return journey. To accompany this, there will be a complimentary service of tea and coffee on both journeys.

Standard & First Class: First Class passengers will have access to the buffet carriage for the purchase of light refreshments. You are also welcome to bring your own refreshments or indeed a tasty picnic to enjoy as the countryside passes by!

A child ticket is for a child aged 16 or under.

Supplement for a private table for two in first class and dining £25.00 per passenger. Fares are subject to a £3.75 booking fee.

For children in Premier Dining the wine will be substituted for soft drinks.

Spring Travel: take a trip on 21st Century's steam train The Aberdonian

Whether you are a seriously committed railway enthusiast or just fancy experiencing the golden age of stylish travel for a day, 21st Century Steam’s timetable for train trips across Scotland this summer looks like the ultimate treat.

Their vintage train, The Aberdonian, is pulled by a celebrity engine, 60163 Tornado, a beautiful green steam machine and something of an engineering marvel.

In its time it has played a starring role in the film Paddington 2 , and Jeremy Clarkson has shovelled its coal in an episode of Top Gear . It has even pulled the Royal Train.

But while it may look like it is decades-old, Tornado was actually built in 2008 by a team of volunteers.

It is also a bit of a record-breaker, being the only steam train to reach 100mph since the 1960s.

This summer it will be offering passengers a series of unmissable rail trips from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Stirling, for those who love the nostalgia of steam but also the finer things in life.

Old World luxury and fine dining, with some of the best views of Scotland as a backdrop, are on offer as you get on board The Aberdonian from Edinburgh or The Clyde Aberdonian tours from Glasgow.

Powered by just coal and water to create the steam needed to turn the 60163 Tornado’s wheels, expect the smell of smoke and the hiss of steam as you board, before the rhythmic beats of the mechanics and the white puffs from the chimney gain pace as you leave the station and start on your journey.

There is a choice of tickets available, starting in tourist class, which offers table seats with unobstructed views and access to the buffet car.

Prices are from £115 per person, and there is a four-person family ticket available – one or two adults plus two or three children – which makes the experience a more affordable day out.

Up a level are the Harry-Potter-esque First Class compartments, or you can opt for the luxury of Premier Dining class, which includes a full Scottish breakfast on the outward journey and a four-course meal on the way home. The on-board caterers specialise in local produce and each meal is cooked fresh.

As for the route, from Edinburgh, the train will start by crossing the iconic Forth Bridge before traversing the furrowed fields of Fife.

From Glasgow and Stirling the route is inland until Dundee, from where both routes follow the dramatic and rugged east coast up to the Granite City, offering spectacular views across the North Sea around each bend.

With a four-hour break in the journey before heading home, passangers have the option of adding on some off-train excursions too.

Those wishing to stretch their legs can pay a visit to any of the area’s National Trust Scotland properties for a giant helping of local history.

Visitors will surely admire the lavishly decorated historic piles, whispering stories of times gone by, as well as exploring their beautifully tended gardens.

If you like your trip to be a little more spirited, then a whisky tasting tour of a local distillery could tickle your palate with some of the finest malts from the region.

Then board the train for a relaxing trip home, with a front-row seat to some of Scotland’s finest landscapes.

There are seven dates available from Edinburgh and one from Glasgow and Stirling, on Thursdays and Saturdays in July, and September.

Bookings can be made online at 21stcenturysteam.co.uk or by calling 01325 488 215.
