Rock Paper Scissors Tour

Peter and Sting’s Rock Paper Scissors  tour started on 21 June 2016 in Columbus, OH and consisted of 21 shows. Throughout the run of dates the tour received great reviews.

“ Just because this was a musical match made in heaven didn’t mean either headliner skimped on his set. On the contrary, both Gabriel and Sting brought about fifteen songs apiece to the affair. And they all came off great .” – Examiner.com “ The musicians and audience alike clearly having a blast — a fitting end to a night where even familiar songs played hundreds of times felt and sounded invigorated and refreshed .” – UltimateClassicRock.com

Below are some images taken by York Tillyer at the initial band rehearsals that took place in London in late May / early June.

Rock Paper Scissors rehearsal

This was the moment when the discussion on which songs to be played on the tour was started and ideas formed. It was also the start of working out how the two bands would interact with each other on stage.

Rock Paper Scissors rehearsal

These ideas were then developed further and the final running order of the show really came together at the production rehearsals in Columbus prior to the first show.

The first show took place on 21 June at the Nationwide Area in Columbus, OH. Many thanks to Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for letting us use his images from that first show below…

“ Great videos and production values, too, not overdone, and excellent sound… if you can get into MSG on Monday night, it’s worth every penny. You’ll come out humming, of not outright singing and banging anything that sounds like a drum .” – Showbiz411.com “ It was hard to argue with the idea of having Gabriel open the show with The Rhythm of The Heat before Sting followed up with his own If I Ever Lose My Faith In You and so it went back and forth from there with slick lights, video screens and projections all night long as the backing band grew to as big as 14 including three drummers, a violinist, and a cellist .” – Toronto Sun “ Two, hit-soaked sets were intertwined to shape a sprawling, singular performance project… Neither of the stars left the stage for long; while one rocked a few of his tunes with the shared a band, the other often supplemented the jam, or even took lead to add a new wrinkle .” – NJ.com “ The second half of the show was a string of hits that stand the test of time. Split vocal duties on Gabriel’s “Big Time” and Sting’s “Englishman in New York” got the nearly sold-out audience on its feet and it stayed there .” – DCIST.com “ Sting and Peter Gabriel may be a combo for the ages… a marriage made of uncommon respect and enthusiasm. If it evolves over the course of its travels, it will be one to remember for a long time .” – T he Columbus Dispatch

Sting, Peter Gabriel Announce Joint Rock Paper Scissors Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Sting  and Peter Gabriel  will join forces this summer for a month-long co-headlining North American trek dubbed the Rock Paper Scissors Tour. Rather than simply performing hits from their own catalogs, Gabriel and Sting will also explore each other’s tracks both separately and together.

The 19-date tour will open up June 21st at Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Arena and circle the continent before coming to a close in Edmonton, Alberta on July 24th. The pair previously toured together back in the Eighties in support of Amnesty International.

“What intrigues me is that you get a good bunch of musicians together and interesting things will happen,” Gabriel said in a statement. Added Sting, “I’m very happy that we’re taking the chance to experiment this way. I think people will be intrigued, I certainly am.”

Speaking to The Associated Press , Sting compared the Rock Paper Scissors trek to his 2014 joint tour with Paul Simon . “We traded songs, we traded musicians, we sang together. And the take home that people got from that was they loved it when we did things together,” Sting said.

Sting and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ Tour Showcases Friendship and Music

sting & peter gabriel rock paper scissors tour dvd

When Peter Gabriel joked that he and Sting were doing the same yoga routine on the tour, he also mentioned their bandmates couldn’t tell them apart — they were the “tantric twins”. And though they are not actually twins, their longstanding friendship allowed for them to perform a show that was more than a greatest hits presentation, it was a collaborative effort between the musicians and their respective bands. Each artist looked happy when sharing the stage or when playing the other’s songs even though Gabriel insisted the crowd decide which of the two was superior — Gabriel’s band were designated team red and Sting’s were team blue.

As Radio.com noted , “They both care deeply about human rights and environmental causes, and toured together in 1988 on the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour.” So it was no surprise that the two mentioned current events. Regarding the Brexit situation back home, Gabriel specifically dedicated a new song, “Love Can Heal” for Jo Cox, the British politician who was killed. Sting introduced “Fragile” with a note about “empathy” for the victims of the shooting in Orlando.

Of course there were some moments that didn’t quite fit into a “collaborative” type set, including the “Love Can Heal” song, but those were quickly forgiven given the tremendous enthusiasm sustained throughout the night. I knew somewhat less of Gabriel’s catalog than I did of Sting’s (and he fortunately included material from The Police) so I was a bit less enthused for the former overall. However, there were many hits scattered throughout the set, including “Red Rain”, the trippy “Big Time” and “Message in a Bottle”, that built up to the slam dunk finish of “Desert Rose” (the newest composition in the set save for “Love Can Heal”), “In Your Eyes”, “Every Breath You Take” and “Sledgehammer”.

If you are a fan of either artist, this is a must see tour (a few west coast dates remain as of now). Watching the visual production, witnessing the camaraderie between the bands and, most importantly, hearing the outstanding music made this an incredible show.

Sting, Peter Gabriel announce ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ tour

Share story.

LONDON (AP) — Sting and Peter Gabriel had so much fun the last time they toured together they thought they’d do it again.

Some three decades after they first met, they’re joining forces, bands and songs for a series of shows across the United States and Canada. Now, as then, the vibe will be playful.

“We found when we toured together in the past there was a lot of pillow fights on airplanes,” Gabriel told The Associated Press. “It was fun, it really was, and there was a lot of great music happening.”

Sitting down for a chat at Gabriel’s Real World Studios, a converted mill surrounded by running water and green gardens in Box, in southwestern England, the two English stars plotted out the future.

Both are fiercely independent and brimming with the confidence that comes from walking away from one accomplishment and building another.

Both departed very successful bands at a high point — Sting from The Police and Gabriel from Genesis — and went on to establish solo careers.

They are so laid-back that they are promising each other free rein over their joint back catalogues of tracks, so there will be song-swapping on stage.

“We want to sing a lot of hits basically, people want to hear the songs we’re famous for,” Sting said. “But it’s always interesting to trade a song. … I’m not precious about giving him whatever he wants.”

The idea came from Sting and a tour he did in Europe and North America with Paul Simon.

“We traded musicians, we sang together. And the take home that people got from that was they loved it when we did things together,” Sting said.

The musicians met when they were featured at an Amnesty International concert in 1986. They embarked on a six-week, five continent tour for the charity two years later that was intended to raise awareness for human rights causes. Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman and Youssou N’Dour also took part.

“We never knew where we were going, we traveled to all sorts of amazing countries, great people, but we had all these fantastic musicians travelling together,” he said.

The pair have named their upcoming tour “Rock Paper Scissors” and joke that they will play the game at any opportunity.

“It’s the perfect game, actually, because no one can have dominance,” Sting said.

The tour kicks off on June 21 in Columbus, Ohio, and finishes up in Edmonton, Alberta, on July 24.

Sting, Peter Gabriel announce "Rock, Paper, Scissors" tour

January 19, 2016 / 12:50 PM EST / AP

LONDON -- Sting and Peter Gabriel are joining forces, bands and songs for a joint headline tour across North America and Canada.

The artists will perform each other's songs for a tour that they hope will have a playful vibe. They joke that they'll be making all decisions by playing the game "Rock, Paper, Scissors" -- the name of the tour.

Sting says the tour announced Tuesday will be similar to one with Paul Simon about a year ago.

"We traded songs, we traded musicians, we sang together. And the take home that people got from that was they loved it when we did things together," Sting told The Associated Press.

The "Rock Paper Scissors" tour kicks off on June 21 in Columbus, Ohio and finishes up in Canada on July 24.

Sting, Peter Gabriel kickstart Rock, Paper, Scissors tour in Columbus, Ohio

It’s cool enough just to have one rock and roll icon playing your town on a Tuesday night.

Put two legends together on the same stage and it’s, well…magic.

Sting and Peter Gabriel kicked off their joint Rock, Paper, Scissors tour last night with a three-hour show at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, each man playing a solo set peppered with his own hits before joining forces for an unforgettable musical matchup..

Renowned for their work fronting two of rock’s most successful - not to mention influential - bands, the Englishmen seemed in good spirits (and excellent health).

Gabriel rose to fame in the ‘70s as the costume-and-makeup-wearing mouthpiece for the art-rock quintet Genesis (1967-74). His first four eponymously-titled solo albums established him as a socially-conscious visionary with a gift for exotic rhythms and menacing verses. Gabriel metamorphosed into an MTV superstar in the mid-‘80s, while the ‘90s found the Real World guru reinventing himself as a divorced father at middle age.

Sting combined elements of pop, punk, and reggae as singer / bassist for The Police (1977-1985). His solo debut The Dream of the Blue Turtles was a hit despite its jazz leanings. Subsequent releases Nothing Like the Sun, Soul Cages, and Ten Summoner’s Tales cemented his status as a hit-making philanthropist who’d do whatever he wanted - including a lute-centric album and Police reunion tour - with whoever he wanted, wherever he chose to do it.

So two of England’s favorite sons landed in the Buckeye State on the first full day of summer, accompanied by a coterie of brilliant musicians who’ve all logged time with one or the other. The multicultural ensemble of men and women included two keyboardists, two percussionists, a violin player, two background singers, a guitarist…and Chapman stick player Tony Levin.

Gabriel also played keys when not wandering the stage with a headset mic. Sting played one of his battered electric basses.

Gabriel started first with “Rhythm of the Heat” and “No Self Control,” during which Sting strode into view, bass at the ready for “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You.”

“Invisible Sun” was the first of several Police cuts on offer. Indeed, Sting as many of those (“Message in a Bottle,” “Roxanne,” etc.) as he did solo selections.

Sting joked that the evening would unfold like a “battle of the bands” between himself and Gabriel, but in truth both employed the same hybrid band - which minimized the need for set changes and technical adjustments. Crowding the expanse of the dramatically lit stage (with a dozen or so vertical LCD banners), the Rock, Paper, Scissors symphony shuffled between Sting / Police and Gabriel / Genesis fare with practiced ease.

“We’ve been here rehearsing all week,” Sting reported early on.

“Yes, I guess that makes us honorary Columbians!” quipped Peter.

Gabriel dusted off So and Us smashes like “Red Rain,” “Sledgehammer,” “Don’t Give Up,” and “Kiss That Frog.” Further removed from his old band than Sting from The Police, Gabriel only teased vintage Genesis (with Sting chiming in on a couple verses). But classic ‘70s songs “Solsbury Hill” and “Games Without Frontiers” more than made up the difference between old and, ah…older PG.

Gabriel issued the new single “I’m Amazing” last week but sang the even newer (and more topical) “Love Can Heal” for the intrigued Ohio crowd.

But just because this was a musical match made in heaven didn’t mean either headliner skimped on his set. On the contrary, both Gabriel and Sting brought about fifteen songs apiece to the affair. And they all came off great.

So nobody went home shortchanged.

The pair first toured together in the late ‘80s (with Bruce Springsteen) for the Human Rights Now benefit concerts for Amnesty International.

Tonight, they sounded telepathic and tight whether guesting on one another’s tunes or receding into the band as just another player, letting the other guy take over.

The tour continues through the end of July.

Tickets will go on sale starting January 25 th and February 1 st at www.livenation.com.

“I’m very happy that we’re taking the chance to experiment this way. I think people will be intrigued, I certainly am.” Sting

“What intrigues me is that you get a good bunch of musicians together and interesting things will happen.” Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, his recording career has included eleven studio albums, film soundtracks for Alan Parker’s ‘Birdy’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and Philip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ as well as numerous live albums. His wider musical career has included multiple Grammy Awards, the creation of the Real World Records label, and in 1980 the creation of WOMAD, the festival that has launched the careers of many world music artists and has to date presented over 170 festivals in 30 countries.

Peter Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS (Witness.org) in 1992, the organization that pioneers the use of cameras and technology in human rights campaigning, and in 2007, alongside Sir Richard Branson, he founded The Elders (theelders.org) which was launched by Nelson Mandela.  In 2006, Peter Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates and in 2008 was also included in the Time 100 list. He has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice. He remains engaged in a wide variety of tech-based businesses throughout a variety of creative industries.

Composer, singer, actor, author, and activist – Sting was born in Newcastle, England before moving to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, earned six Grammy Awards and two Brits, and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.  Since 1989, Sting has released fourteen solo albums and received an additional 10 Grammy Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. Also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he received the Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2014. Throughout his enduring career, he has sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist.

The Last Ship , his latest release, is inspired by his memories of the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the North East of England where he was born and raised. A play of the same name, with music and lyrics by Sting, debuted on Broadway in October, 2014 and was heralded by the Associated Press as “thrilling with powerful performances, outstanding songs, and real heart.”  Sting received a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score. He has appeared in more than 15 films and authored two books, including The New York Times best-selling memoir, Broken Music . His support for human rights organizations mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there.

Having first toured together in the eighties for Amnesty International, Rock Paper Scissors will find Peter Gabriel and Sting performing both separately and together, playing their own songs as well as melding their bands to explore each other’s most celebrated hits.

Sting, Peter Gabriel Play Rock Paper Scissors At The Verizon Center...

June 24, 2016.

Sting and Peter Gabriel both enjoyed massive commercial success during the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s. The two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-ers explored the similarities and differences in their approaches last night at the Verizon Center on the second stop of their co-headlining Rock Paper Scissors Tour.

Not since the Amnesty International concerts of the late ‘80s have Sting and Gabriel toured together. The idea for Rock Paper Scissors came from Sting, who shared the stage with Paul Simon in 2014 on a tour that was very successful, artistically and commercially. As with that show, the presentation wasn't linear, with one artist after the other. Rather, Gabriel and Sting shared musicians, dueted, and swapped solo sets to showcase the depth of their respective catalogs.

The more than two-and-a-half hour performance slithered in with the angular “The Rhythm of the Heat” off of Gabriel’s 1982 self-titled released. The combined band, over a dozen musicians strong, took the song from its eerie beginnings to its percussive climax, and the concert just took off from there. Sting followed the opener and maintained the energy with his 1993 hit, “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You”, before the two artists finally shared vocal duties on “No Self Control”, another example of Gabriel’s prog-rock roots.

The opening Gabriel numbers were immediate signs that neither artist lacked the confidence to dig into their deep cuts and challenge the audience. Sting played “Walking In Your Footsteps”, written for The Police, as well as “The Hounds of Winter”, a song about aging. Gabriel chose “Darkness” as part of his set, a 7-minute piece of sonic schizophrenia that alternates between tender piano ballad and distorted noise-rock.

Gabriel and Sting have been politically active throughout their careers, sometimes drawing derision from the pop culture intelligentsia as a result. There was a definite political undercurrent to last night's music. Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers," in which Sting shared lead vocals, seems particularly timely given today's Brexit news. Sting's "Invisible Sun" and "Driven to Tears" are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago, unfortunately. Sting also dedicated "Fragile" to victims of the Orlando shooting and Gabriel similarly dedicated "Love Can Heal" to fallen British MP, Jo Cox.

The show's design incorporated many of the lights, bells, and whistles one expects from a large rock show, but it was all tastefully executed, down to the smallest detail. For example, each front man's band was associated with a different color: Sting's band uniforms had blue accents while Gabriel's had red, and the lighting's color scheme would change accordingly depending upon who was playing.

The two leads showed their differing styles as craftsmen and showmen. Incorporating global instruments and rhythms into their music is a trait they share, but Gabriel tends to look to the electronic and experimental for his influences while Sting in known for his use of jazz tonalities and collaborators. Gabriel was more comfortable as a frontman, working the crowd and moving about the stage. Sting seemed much happier crooning with his well-traveled bass in hand, as opposed to dancing around.

The highlights were those moments when the two stars would sing each other's material. Gabriel twisted "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" into a dirty downtempo funk groove. Sting rocked "Shock The Monkey" and sang a bit of the 1973 Genesis song, "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" before segueing into "Message In A Bottle."

An opportunity for some of the wonderful musicians to get a moment in the spotlight was missed. The percussion section of Vinnie Colaiuta, Ged Lynch, and Rhani Krija would have made for a fantastic drum break, and perhaps Tony Levin, Gabriel's long time bassist, has earned a solo spot. Still, keyboardists David Sancious and Angie Pollock got to shine on a gorgeous arrangement of "In Your Eyes", while vocalist Jo Lawry and violinist Peter Tickell each got a moment in the sun.

This is just a minor complaint. The second half of the show was a string of hits that stand the test of time. Split vocal duties on Gabriel's "Big Time" and Sting's "Englishman in New York" got the nearly sold-out audience on its feet and it stayed there. By the time the encore concluded with "Sledgehammer" and its infectious groove, any nitpicks went by the wayside.
