What's New on Universal Studios Hollywood's 60th Anniversary Studio Tour in 2024?

NBC Insider took the summer glow-up Studio Tour for its Diamond Anniversary and we've got tips to share!

studio beaujardin tours

It's a big year for the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour . In operation since 1964, the tours have evolved massively across six decades, originating with their iconic red and white Glamor Trams to today's multi-car shuttles which wind around the sprawling Universal backlot.

To celebrate their Diamond Anniversary of the Studio Tour, Universal Studios Hollywood is giving guests lots of new experiences from now through August 11 to get a taste of what the tour was like back in the day mixed with all of its innovations today.

NBC Insider recently jumped on a tram car to get a first hand perspective on the tour and we've got some tips on how to plan your day at the theme park with the Studio Tour for efficiency.

When should you plan to take the Studio Tour?

The post card on Universal's 60th Anniversary Studio Tram Tour.

The entrance to the Studio Tour is on the Upper Lot of Universal Studios Hollywood. Make a right at The Simpsons  cross section and the dedicated escalators take guests down to the queue for the trams. If you want shorter lines, go earlier in the day. That's the best time to get on trams with less crowds. However, if you're looking for an escape from the sun, the Studio Tour queue is completed shaded and the tour itself keeps you covered even during the hottest times of summer days.

Know that the Studio Tour is about one-hour long, but the special summer tour will add some extras that may extend your experience beyond an hour. Keep that in mind too if you have other places to be, are hungry or have timed shows to see.

What's different about the anniversary Universal Studio Tour in 2024?

Cars on Universal's 60th Anniversary Studio Tram Tour.

Plenty! Going on a decade now, we're well-versed on all of the minute changes to the Studio Tour which are usually pretty subtle. But this special iteration has whole new routes, a lot of new video material with Master of Ceremonies Jimmy Fallon and Universal Pictures luminaries like Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Jordan Peele and Jack Black, along with plenty of fresh movie history shared from the mouths of the tour guides.

Since the back lot is a working studio, not every attraction on the Studio Tour route will be available during the week. However, weekends give Studio Tour riders a better shot at seeing all stops because film and television shows are rarely in production on Saturdays and Sundays. That being said, the new route will oftentimes take riders through the city facades, past many of the massive sound stages and standing sets like Little Europe and the Western streets and the flooding street area used in many films and TV shows.

RELATED:  Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood Finally Revealed

The Courthouse Square is another area of note which features the clocktower from Back to the Future. This tour will feature a DeLorean and Doc Brown to greet you as you pass through. There's a temporary return of the 1976 Runaway Train which used to be part of the Studio Tour and featured warning bells and sirens to scare riders. There's also an amped up Jurassic World section which features a dimensional Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur and pens holding some cranky Dilophosaurus that screech and roar as you pass by in the tram.

As for attractions that are part of the Studio Tour, riders will still experience Peter Jackson's 3D Kong Island; a newly renovated Earthquake—The Big One attraction that reproduces the effects of a major quake; the Jaws lagoon attack; a ride through Jupiter's Claim from Nope and the 3D enhanced Fast & Furious - Supercharged finale.

What's at the new step-off point in the middle of the Studio Tour?

The hollywood sign on Universal's 60th Anniversary Studio Tram Tour.

Outside of the Halloween Horror Nights Terror Tram experience, this summer's updated Studio Tour is the rare time when riders can get out of the tram to walk amongst the Psycho motel and experience some unique photo opportunities.

Midway through the tour, the tram will stop at a drop off point at the Bates Motel. There, you can walk amongst movie props, or take a picture next to Marion Crane's car, or an original, fully restored 1964 vintage Glamor Tram. There's also the best place to frame a photo op with the perfectly scaled replica of the Hollywood Sign setup just for this anniversary tour.

Once you've had your fun in this area, around the corner is an even bigger area of photo ops where you can get yourself sitting pretty between two Fast and the Furious picture cars; cuddle up inside King Kong's fist or proudly reveal your humongous catch of the day, which is a more than life-sized reproduction of the shark in Jaws .

Things to know as you plan your visit: on less crowded days, you can make the rounds of these photo ops quickly and then hitch a ride back on revolving trams that are ready to pick you up and continue the rest of the tour. On busier days, you will need extra time to queue for each photo op as there will be lines. Regardless, there will be a tram waiting for you to get back on when you are ready. And don't worry, there is cold bottled water available at this stop to purchase if you're feeling hot or thirsty.

Are there collectibles to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Studios Tour?

The popcorn bucket on the Studio Tram Tour's 60th Anniversary

Absolutely! Throughout the theme park and in the Universal Studios Store at the entrance, you'll find an array of fun shirts, mugs, magnets, and more emblazoned with vintage art that features the Glamour Tram. There's also a collectible popcorn bucket with Woody Woodpecker at the wheel of the Glam Tram that holds a lot of popcorn you can refill through the day, then take home to remember your trip.

If you're more of a foodie, there's a Dining Pass celebrating the 60 th  anniversary with special food offerings just for the summer event. Or you can individually purchase themed items at Hollywood & Dine or Mel’s Diner. And for snacks, check out Studio Scoops and City Snack Shop standalone outdoor food car on the Upper Lot.

Regardless of how you tackle the Studio Tour, remember that it's part of your Universal Studios Hollywood admission ticket so make space for it when you visit. You won't be disappointed.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Tour: 'I Am Completely Heartsick and Devastated'

The singer released her ninth studio album 'This is Me… Now' in February.

Jennifer Lopez delivered some bad news to fans this week.

The singer took to her website , OntheJLo, to announce that her This is Me…Live Tour slated for this summer has been canceled. “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family, and close friends,” a statement from Live Nation representatives on the site said.

J Lo also penned a message to her fans. "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary."

She added, "I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

Lopez’s tour was set to kick off in June and make its way through a number of North American cities through August. Her ninth studio album This is Me… Now arrived in February.

According to TMZ, there was some talk of weak ticket sales at the start of May. According to sources, this wasn’t the reason for the cancellation, and ticket sales improved over the course of the month.

Over the last few months, rumors about her and Ben Affleck divorcing have been making the rounds. The couple appear to no longer live together , with the actor moving out of their Beverly Hills family home and into a rental in Brentwood.

Still, they have been spending time together in public, with TMZ also reporting on Friday that the pair were seen holding hands when leaving the high school graduation of one of Ben’s daughters. TMZ does note that they both looked “tense,” left the graduation separately, and returned to their separate residences.

Neither celebrity has addressed the state of their marriage.

LONDON - FEBRUARY 14: (L to R) Members of Snow Patrol, Tom Simpson, Jonny Quinn, Paul Wilson, Gary Lightbody and Nathan Connolly arrive at the BRIT Awards 2007 in association with MasterCard at Earls Court on February 14, 2007 in London. (Photo by Stuart Wilson/Getty Images) Getty Images

If you’re a fan of the Northern Irish band Snow Patrol , it’s time to get excited.

That’s because Snow Patrol is gearing up for a significant return. Since drummer Jimmy Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson left the band last September, the band found itself regrouping.

Slimmed down into a trio now, band members – guitarist and singer Gary Lightbody, guitarist Johnny McDaid, and guitarist/vocalist Nathan Connolly – are preparing the release of their latest album, “The Forest Is The Path” on Sept. 13.

The 12-track collection was produced by Frasier T. Smith, while the album was written by Lightbody, McDaid and Connolly. Smith, Will Reynolds, Roy Kerr and Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen contributed to the songwriting on the album.

This latest venture will be the band’s first studio release in six years.

Additionally, Snow Patrol’s latest single, “ The Beginning ,” is seemingly about loss, which could reflect the recent exit of band members or Lightbody’s personal experiences.

A statement about the upcoming LP described it as “an album rooted in reflection, introspection and interrogation” and about “the idea of love from the distance of time”.

Speaking about the new single, written on a trip to Somerset, Lightbody said to NME : “The first day we wrote ‘the Beginning,’ start to finish.”

“And he did the vocal in one take,” Dade added. “Straight after writing the lyrics. So it has this mind-collapsing quality to it where you feel like you’re seeing into someone’s soul.”

In another statement, Lightbody said the single sums up the album, identifying it as a way to look at “various mistakes, any pain I may have caused, from a place where nothing is hurting anymore, except the memory when you pull it back into your mind. The memory itself is full of hurt but everything around it isn’t. You’re holding in your hand this ball of fire, but now you’ve got gloves on.”

“We had a few wee ideas kicking about that would eventually be recorded and find their way onto the album but when Johnny and I found ourselves in the Somerset countryside about to start writing for this album in earnest ‘The Beginning’ was written on the very first day,” the band wrote on Instagram . “That’s why it’s called the beginning in fact. I tend to name songs before I write the lyrics.

“So if Johnny, Nathan and I are working on the music for a track it will generally have a placeholder name that will get changed once I write the lyrics, one that better reflects the words of the song,” they continued. “BUT in this case, even though there are probably better words and phrases (that actually appear in the song) to be used as titles, ‘The Beginning’ stuck.”

“This album took us on many uncharted routes, with sometimes weird and sometimes wonderful turns, and so it’s hard not to think of the start of this album as a new beginning.”

“We honour the past, deeply. This is our thirtieth year, so we have an awful lot of it, past I mean. Tons of it. We have a profound love and respect for all who have been on this journey with us those many years. But while we honour the past we also want to cherish the present and look to the future. So this is the beginning of something, and we are so excited to share it with you all,” they added.

The group have also announced the details of a UK and Ireland tour next February, with tickets to go on sale on Friday, June 7.

Oregon folk artist Anna Tivel releases new album ‘Living Thing’, announces tour dates

studio beaujardin tours

As the world faced pandemic lockdowns in 2020, Oregonian folk musician Anna Tivel took the year as an opportunity to simply observe the slow passing of time and write “everything from the same window.”

Today, those writings come together to form “Living Thing,” Tivel’s sixth studio album. The record released Friday includes singles such as “Disposable Camera” and “Bluebird.” According to the musician, the album is “an attempt to capture the strange chaos of that year with the resulting songs feeling rhythmic and vital, with more melody and soaring chorus than I’ve explored in the past.”

The artist, who moved to Portland from La Conner, Washington, when she was 18, is currently signed with the city’s own Fluff & Gravy Records. “Living Thing” follows Tivel’s 2022 critically acclaimed album, “Outsiders,” and she was also featured on an episode of NPR’s Tiny Desk.

Tivel recently announced a tour and is slated for a performance and an album signing session at Portland’s Music Millennium on Friday. The session opens to the public at 5 p.m. The singer-songwriter will also perform at Pickathon this August.

Tivel sat down with OPB earlier this month to take us through the creative process that went into producing “Living Thing.” Below are excerpts from the interview, edited for clarity and length:

Prakruti Bhatt: You’ve mentioned that “Living Thing” is an attempt to capture the strange chaos of 2020. Tell me more about that.

Anna Tivel: Yeah, I wrote all the songs in that first year of the pandemic, and really being stationary, not in motion for the first time in a long time, and writing everything from the same window and watching the neighborhood and the city and the country and the world go through this thing. But watching it from a very stationary place, it feels like a postcard from that moment in time, I think.

Bhatt: What were some of your favorite moments and also your most challenging moments from this whole process?

Tivel: It was a really different and singular record making process. I made it just with my friend, Shane Leonard in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He produced and played most of the instruments, and we really just holed up for a month and got as strange and far out there as we could and tried everything. And it was maybe more a collaboration than anything I’ve ever made. And a lot of his heart and his voice and his musicality drew all the songs into his orbit, which felt really exciting and new and fun.

Bhatt: This is your sixth studio record of new music. How has your approach to songwriting evolved over the years?

Tivel: The work of it is always shifting and changing. And I love that about songwriting because you’re trying to get at ways to express things and ways to get at truths that you feel in your heart and that you see in the world. And you’ll never quite get there, but you’re always trying a little more, a little more. And it’s this never-ending work that I think I really believe in, and just making my way through that, always.

Bhatt: Speaking of truth, what inspired you to write “Two Truths?”

Cameron Nielsen / OPB

Tivel: That’s a song just really trying to think about how difficult it is to let a lot of things be true at once, and to hold them in your mind and in your heart. And I think maybe it feels safer to have things be black and white, and this is the whole truth and nothing else is true. But I think maybe everything is just a multitude of nuances. And especially at this moment in time, it seems like we have a hard time letting that be that way.

Bhatt: You sing in the song, “You put on a song, you can feel the record is forever changing.” I know it can mean so many things, but do you have some song or record that brings you back to that point in time?

Related: Anna Tivel performs at Type Foundry Studio

Tivel: Yeah. I think I find a lot in artists that changed a lot over time, or somebody like Nina Simone, or something that she really explored a lot of different avenues in her artistry and in her voice and in her playing. And that feels like that to me. People, whether or not they’re doing it artistically or just in the world, are on this journey to try to understand things. And it draws you back over and over again. And you get a little further, and it draws you back. And it feels like this big wheel, maybe.

Bhatt: Finally, what’s different about “Living Thing” compared to “Outsiders,” your last record?

Tivel: I think it has a lot more groove. Yeah, my friend Shane really went out on a more movable grooveful limb, I think. And it was a really fun process. And it drew the songs into a zone that I don’t know I’ve explored yet with my music, but getting to play them live now... is exciting. It feels like a different way to move your body and to move your spirit.

Sarah McLachlan Is Resurfacing

The Canadian songwriter became a superstar through a series of defiant decisions. After slowing down to be a single mother, she has returned to the stage and studio.

Sarah McLachlan was just 30 hours from beginning her first full-band tour in a decade, and she could not sing.

She was in the final heave of preparation for eight weeks of shows stretching through late November that commemorate “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy,” the sophisticated 1993 album that turned her into an avatar for the sensitive, mysterious singer-songwriters of ’90s radio. But three days into a string of seven-hour rehearsals, her voice collapsed, the high notes so long her hallmark dissolving into a pitchy wheeze.

So onstage in a decommissioned Vancouver hockey arena, a day before a sold-out benefit for her three nonprofit music schools, McLachlan only mouthed along to her songs, shaking her head but smiling whenever she reached for a note and missed.

“It only goes away when I project, push out,” she said backstage in a near-whisper following the first of the day’s mostly mute run-throughs. She slipped a badge that read “Vocal Rest” around her neck and winked. “Luckily, that’s only a third of what I do.”

For the last two decades, McLachlan, 56, has contentedly receded from the spotlight and the music industry she helped reimagine with the women-led festival Lilith Fair . Since 2008, she has been a single mother to India and Taja, two daughters from her former marriage. With rippling muscles that suggest a lean triathlete, she is now a devoted surfer, hiker and skier who talks about pushing her body until it breaks. Though she writes every morning, waking up with a double espresso at the piano in her home outside Vancouver, she has focused on motherhood and the Sarah McLachlan School of Music , offering free instruction to thousands of Canadian children since 2002.

A few years ago, she finished a set of songs about a pernicious breakup but reckoned the world didn’t need them; she hasn’t released an album of original material since 2014. “What do I want to talk about?” she said months earlier during a video interview from her home, swaying in a hammock chair. “I’m just another wealthy, middle-aged white woman.”

McLachlan, though, now may be on the verge of a renaissance. She is amassing a $20 million endowment for her schools, and exhaustive interviews for a Lilith Fair documentary just wrapped. In a year, her youngest, Taja, will head to college. For the second time, McLachlan’s life is opening toward music.

A woman in a white dress fronts a band on a large stage, and the screens behind her are lit up with three images of her.

While revisiting her catalog to build this two-hour concert, which begins with a clutch of personal favorites before pivoting into a muscular interpretation of “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy,” she flew to Los Angeles for multiple sessions with the producer Tony Berg, who has worked with Phoebe Bridgers and Aimee Mann. She has cut at least a dozen songs there, including a gently psychedelic cover of Judee Sill’ s “The Kiss.” She has more to write. “I’m so energized by music, now that I’m living and breathing it every moment,” she said. “It’s a very different feeling.”

During the day’s second rehearsal, however, she tempered her enthusiasm with tacit worry about her voice. She told her tour manager that Taja would soon be backstage, probably with a prednisone prescription. “Mom, I’m already here,” the 16-year-old screamed, 20 rows back in an otherwise empty arena. “I have your medicine! Do you want it?”

McLachlan couldn’t hear her. She nodded to her band and started a song called “Fallen,” humming to herself.

DURING SUMMER BREAK between sixth and seventh grades, McLachlan’s friends in Nova Scotia labeled her a lesbian. She had indeed kissed another girl, practicing for a boy. She instantly became a pariah, a middle-class kid from a conservative family surrounded by wealthy bullies.

“I became poison. Then they started calling me ‘Medusa,’ because I had long, curly hair,” she said. “There was physical abuse, too. I thought, ‘I am on my own.’”

There was little quarter at home. McLachlan was the youngest of three adopted children that she said her father never wanted. Since he tormented her older brothers, her mother — unhappy with marriage, depressed by circumstance — responded to her daughter with equal disdain, ensuring everyone was miserable. “I didn’t have a relationship with my father, because my mother wouldn’t allow it. If I showed him any attention, she wouldn’t speak to me for a week,” McLachlan said, lips pursed.

Music, however, became her refuge. She graduated from ukulele at 4 to classical guitar at 7 after the family moved to the provincial capital. She struggled in school, skipping class to hide in the empty gymnasium and play piano there. Though she despised the hard stares and high expectations of recitals, she begged to join a band. Her parents relented to a few hours of Sunday practice. The group’s first show, for several hundred dancing kids in a student union, was transformational.

“I was being seen, and I was being accepted,” she said. “It was the first time I felt that way.”

That night’s headlining act included Mark Jowett, who was then running a small label, Nettwerk, in Vancouver. Stunned by McLachlan’s voice and verve, Jowett urged her to move west and start writing songs. Her parents insisted she finish high school and college. Soon after meeting the label’s co-founder Terry McBride, she defied them, anyway. They barely spoke for two years. “She was green but really disarming,” said McBride, McLachlan’s manager until 2011, in an interview. “Her ambition was to get out.”

McLachlan soon cut a ponderous debut informed by the folk of her youth — Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez. Jowett and McBride wanted a producer to push her. When they asked Pierre Marchand, who had worked with the Canadian folk royalty of Kate and Anna McGarrigle, what he’d do with McLachlan’s music, he seemed flippant, saying he’d find out in the studio. “My manager was like, ‘I don’t like this guy.’ But I’m like, ‘I love this guy,’” she recalled. “It was all about exploration.”

The pair decamped to the New Orleans studio of the iconoclastic producer Daniel Lanois, where their professional relationship turned physical. (“We wrote a lot of songs naked,” Marchand admitted, laughing.) That intimate bond proved critical when an ascot-sporting representative from McLachlan’s American label, Arista, stopped by to listen. When he didn’t hear a marketable single, they didn’t capitulate. They told him to leave.

“It was a defining moment for me in deciding how I wanted to control my future,” McLachlan said. “I thought, if this is what being famous and successful means, to compromise this thing that feels so important, I don’t want it.”

They gambled correctly. The success of “Solace,” McLachlan’s second album, drifted from Canada into the United States, where it was released in 1992, buying her and Marchand good will. They spent a year and a half in a studio in the Quebec countryside, McLachlan often walking home by moonlight while Marchand built late-night loops and atmospheres. The result, “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy,” remains an uncanny singer-songwriter record, her frank observations on betrayal, friendship and lust warped by his outré sensibilities. “I like it when it’s complex, when there’s not one feeling,” Marchand said. “It’s like a person.”

Marchand and McLachlan added the layered grandeur of U2 and the supple strength of Depeche Mode to these testimonials of yearning and loss. Critics lauded it as smart and sensual. Sales were stronger still: It went quintuple-platinum in Canada and sold more than three million copies stateside.

“I was in a punk band listening to a lot of hardcore — and, strangely, Sarah McLachlan,” said Leslie Feist , the Canadian songwriter who will open the U.S. leg of McLachlan’s tour. “I could hear her power, but it was being expressed more fluidly. It wasn’t about aggression. It was about conviction.”

As McLachlan’s profile grew, letters from stalkers mounted at Nettwerk’s offices, especially from an Ottawa programmer named Uwe Vandrei. They met once, and he slipped her a scarf. But after she read one of his pleas, she asked not to see more. Still, in the album’s opener, “Possession,” where bass pulses and guitars radiate above droning gothic organs, she worked to mirror his mind, to articulate his misplaced passions. When it became a hit, he sued, alleging McLachlan had lifted his words. Vandrei died before trial.

“I felt a strange sense of relief,” McLachlan said haltingly. “But then I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is somebody’s son. Should I have tried to reach out? Tried to talk some sense into him?’”

The success of “Fumbling” — and the draining circus that followed, including conspiracy theories about label involvement in Vandrei’s death — helped spur McLachlan’s most historic defiance. She demanded to not headline every show, to be partnered with acts who could share celebrity’s weight. Promoters balked at the idea that women could carry such a docket, rankling McLachlan. She named a genre-jumping touring festival for Lilith, a woman repeatedly lambasted in sacred texts. Lilith Fair not only dominated the summer concert scene of the late ’90s but showed onlookers and executives that women were not music’s second-class citizens.

“I busked outside of Lilith and applied when I was 16,” said the singer-songwriter Allison Russell , who made her onstage debut by performing McLachlan’s “Mary” alongside high school friends in Montreal. “She changed the landscape for women. She resisted what everyone told her she had to do.”

When McLachlan was the kid being bullied at school or alienated at home, music made her feel valuable. After her hit-laden 1997 album “Surfacing” (“Building a Mystery,” “Adia”) and Lilith Fair, it had also made her wealthy and famous, affording her a family and an activist legacy. She no longer needed the spotlight’s validation, getting it instead from her daughters and dogs, her music school and morning music practice. Her career steadily slowed, with more years passing between albums and her experimental ardor fading. She didn’t mind.

“I’m a middle-aged woman. You kind of became invisible,” she said, leaning in with a wide grin. She whispered: “And I really like that.”

THE ENCORE BREAK on McLachlan’s new tour is brief, maybe 40 seconds. At her benefit show in Vancouver, soon after the band faded from the title finale of “Fumbling,” McLachlan slipped through a black curtain and rushed to her polished Yamaha grand. She’s making a new record, she told the crowd, and she wanted to try a song alone: “Gravity,” her balletic ode to perseverance, to letting others lift you. If McLachlan discarded an album of breakup songs, this is a hymn for what comes after.

It is also a fitting prelude for “Angel,” the poignant 1997 ballad that became a maudlin punchline after scoring a commercial for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“I see it at the end of the day, and it’s like, ‘Hi, I’m Sarah McLachlan, and I’m about to ruin your day,’” she said of filming the commercial as a favor. “But that’s just not me.”

Before “Adia,” McLachlan told the audience she never explained that song, because it immortalized her taboo transgression — ruining a relationship by dating her best friend’s ex. “We needed to part ways for a while,” she said. “And I swear it was the hardest breakup I’ve ever been through.”

But they fixed the friendship, which has since endured divorces, children and new love. For years, that friend, Crystal Heald, urged McLachlan to take “Fumbling” on tour. “Thank goodness she forgave me,” McLachlan continued.

McLachlan is candid about her prospects. Relevance, she admitted, is a young person’s game that she has long resisted. She’ll be at least 57 by the time she releases new music, and she knows most people only like the old stuff. Still, when she told her forgiveness tale, the arena erupted with a wave of recognition for bygone mistakes and second chances, for comebacks. Her audience has aged with her; stepping back into the spotlight, she is ready to have that conversation.

“I didn’t talk for the first 10 years of my shows. When the music was happening, I knew what I was doing. Take the music and my voice, and I’m 12 again,” she said two months before stepping onstage. “But in the last 10 years, I say whatever comes to mind. I feel more freedom daily to be who I am.”
