Known as the Land Down Under, studying abroad in Australia is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the country’s stunning coastline and its indigenous history to its modern, multicultural vibe, Australia has it going on!

Let’s dive into our ultimate guide to an Australia study abroad trip.

Why Study Abroad in Australia

Australia is an incredible place. There are tons of reasons why studying abroad in Australia might be the best option for you and we’ve highlighted three reasons here in our ultimate guide.

Reason #1: Experience Australia’s well-preserved natural beauty.

Australia’s topography is very diverse. From the desert and mountains to beaches and the tropics, the country is full of different landscapes to explore. And one of the best parts? The fact that most of Australia remains untouched and in its natural state.

As one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, the Australian government and various organizations throughout the country have put a lot of effort into natural wildlife conservation. During your study abroad program, you’ll learn more about the tremendous endeavors Australia takes toward preserving its land and its inhabitants.

A few amazing places you’ll have to see with your own eyes during an Australia study abroad trip:

  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
  • Lake Hillier
  • Litchfield National Park
  • Wilpena Pound
  • The Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains
  • The Pinnacles

And that’s just scratching the surface. Australia is packed with natural sites and landscapes that are out-of-this-world. You’ll need to see it all for yourself!

Reason #2: Visit the country’s stunning beaches and water sites.

Australia’s coastline and surrounding oceans deserve their very own place in our ultimate Australia study abroad guide!

Australia has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with a coastline stretching over 20,000 miles. With clear blue water, soft white sand, and bright sunny rays, people travel from around the globe to experience Australian beaches. A few favorites: Shelly Beach, Four Mile Beach, and Hyams Beach – although they’re all spectacular.

Plus, there’s the Great Barrier Reef. The largest in the world (bigger than the U.K., the Netherlands , and Switzerland combined), you can visit this UNESCO World Heritage marvel by snorkeling or diving.

Reason #3: Learn all about Aboriginal culture in Australia.

Australia honors its Aboriginal identity through the preservation of indigenous people and their lands.

Considered some of the oldest populations of humans in the world, Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders have lived in the area for more than 50,000 years. They have a unique ancient culture.

While Australia’s history with the first inhabitants of the land has been complex, the country has made strides in honoring the group, particularly by preserving important landmarks used in ancient Aboriginal traditions, including Ayers Rock, Uluru, and more.

Learn more about this fascinating culture and its people here .

An Introduction to Australian Education and Your Study Options

In this guide, we introduce you to the Australian education system and the range of study options for international students in Australia.

Are you planning to study in Australia?

You probably already know that international students in Australia have access to a world-class education, amazing student cities, diverse and vibrant communities, work rights and protections, and so much more.

But perhaps you’d like to know more about the Australian education system and the range study pathways available?

We’re here to help.

Why study in Australia?

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for international students in the world – with good reason.

Global rankings like Times Higher Education , QS and Shanghai Rankings consistently list Australian education providers in the top 100 in the world for their quality of teaching, modern facilities, and world-class research and innovation. Australia’s providers also rank among the world’s best in a wide range of individual subject areas and for impact against the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs).

Australia’s education system and its students are protected by rigorous quality assurance systems. Australia has incredibly high standards and protections, which means that whatever and wherever you decide to study, your learning will be supported by strong protections and specialised services for international students.

Study options in Australia

There are a range of study options in Australia available to international students.

1.     Higher education

Universities and non-university higher education providers (including TAFEs) offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including bachelor degrees, coursework and research master degrees, and doctoral degrees.

Many higher education providers will also offer graduate diploma and graduate certificate programs, and even associate degrees leading to full bachelor qualifications.

Some universities are very large and offer a wide range of study areas, while others specialise in certain fields of study . With 43 universities across the country, you’re sure to find the right fit for you.

2.     TAFEs and private VET colleges (RTOs)

TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education, and refers to Government-owned (public) institutions providing vocational education training (VET) and some higher education programs.

Private colleges (registered training organisations) also offer VET programs, higher education programs, or both. These colleges are usually much smaller than universities and many focus on a particular field of study.

Most courses in VET offer hands-on, practical, workplace-based and job-ready learning. These programs are designed by industry experts to meet employer and industry needs.

A wide range of VET study areas are available at Certificate II, Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels, as well as some higher education degrees.

3.     Pathway and Foundation colleges

Education pathways can include English language preparation , VET courses and Foundation studies. Some higher education providers have a formal arrangement with a pathway provider to support your progression from preparation to higher studies.

If you don’t quite meet the academic requirements for direct entry to an Australian university, Foundation studies can provide you with the skills you need to begin an undergraduate higher education program.

Foundation courses are usually divided into subject-related streams (such as business or science) and they offer both compulsory and elective subjects.

4. English language colleges

ELICOS stands for English language intensive courses for overseas students. These courses adhere to mandatory national standards and a comprehensive, industry-led quality assurance framework .

You may wish to improve your English for:

  • work or career purposes,
  • personal reasons such as travel, or
  • as a pathway to a tertiary education provider (as per the above section).

Whatever your reason or wanting to learn English in Australia, there is a course to suit your goal.

5. Schools

Australia is host to international students from around five years of age, including children of international students who are studying at a tertiary level.

The Australian school system is broadly structured as follows:

  • Pre-school and kindergarten: a duration of two years, run part-time for children three and four years of age.
  • Primary school: a duration of seven to eight years (from a ‘kinder’ or preparatory year though to year 6).
  • Secondary school: a duration of six years from year 7 to year 12, including two years of ‘senior secondary school’ in years 11 and 12.

Australian schools are among the finest in the world with a choice of either government or private schools. Fees and requirements for enrolling students vary across Australian states and territories, and across schools.

Are you interested in studying abroad in Australia? We can’t say we blame you! Each year, hundreds of thousands of students from all over the world travel to study at Australia’s universities, vocational schools, and English language intensive programs.

Australia offers the best of the best when it comes to education, weather, people, things to do, culture, and economy—so there’s no wonder why it’s one of the most coveted places for international study abroad programs.

If you’re ready to have the time of your life, then check out this complete student guide to studying abroad in Australia—including how to choose the right city for you!

Why Study Abroad in Australia?

Studying abroad in Australia is awesome (check out these interesting facts about Australia if you don’t believe us!). Australia, (officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia), is a large island country made up of the mainland island Australia, plus the island of Tasmania, and other smaller surrounding islands. It’s located in the southern hemisphere of the world, so the seasons are opposite of the northern hemisphere. You’ll be in for a real treat if you study abroad in Australia in December through February, as this is the thick of summertime.

International students flock to Australia not just for the great weather, but also for the incredible diversity of its metropolitan cities, beaches, countryside, and Outback. There’s so much to do and see while studying down under that your Australia bucket list will be packed!

Australia is also known for its rich culture, incredibly friendly people, laid back vibe, extraordinary sights to see, a booming economy with heaps of jobs, and its superior education system.

Australian universities are notoriously excellent too. Take the University of Sydney for example. Its graduates were rated among the world’s most employable , making this Uni #1 in Australia and #5 in the entire world for graduate employability. Graduates from the University of Sydney are consistently the most desired for jobs across multiple professions throughout the globe.

With all that said about the amazing qualities of Australia, the question really should be: why wouldn’t you want to study abroad in Australia? International students can enjoy all the perks of Australian life, whether it be for a semester, or an entire year, it’s up to you.

And if all that still hasn’t convinced you to study down under, then here are a few more reasons to study abroad .

How to Apply to Study Abroad in Australia

Studying abroad is so popular among college-age students, that many universities have partnered with schools in countries across the world—like Australia. This allows students to not only study but also fulfill key academic requirements and transfer credits back to their home university.

If you’re interested in studying abroad in Australia, contact your university’s international student centre or your academic advisor to get started. You should be guided through the entire process which typically looks like this:

Decide on an Institution

Apply to your university of choice, receive your physical acceptance letter, pay your university fees, receive your confirmation of enrollment (coe), secure health coverage, apply for your student visa.

Your home school has likely brokered study abroad opportunities with Australian universities already, so explore your options and decide, along with your advisors, which city and school is the right fit for you. If you need some additional info, check out our overseas school preparation tips .

Yes, you’ll most likely be required to apply to your Australian university of choice. Be sure to fill out your application clearly and concisely, so there are no hang-ups that prolong you from studying abroad in Australia.

Once you’ve applied to the university of your choice, sit back and await your physical acceptance letter. This process varies by school, so hang tight, but expect something to arrive via snail mail.

You’ve officially been accepted to attend Uni in Australia, so be sure to promptly pay all your necessary university fees. This includes payment for all courses that you’ll be taking and can include additional fees for books, supplies, class and university dues.

After you’ve paid all university fees, you should receive a document called a confirmation of enrollment (CoE) for each course you’ll be taking while studying abroad in Australia. Keep this document handy because you’ll need it for your student visa process.

All students studying abroad in Australia must purchase Overseas Student Health Coverage (OSHC). We recommend speaking with your university about which of the five approved OSHC insurers you should choose from for coverage while you’re visiting.

This is one of the most important parts of studying abroad in Australia, so we’ve devoted the next part of this blog to the topic. Be aware that you only need a student visa if you’ll be staying in Australia for longer than 12 consecutive weeks; otherwise, you can apply for a tourist visa.

The Process of Applying for a Student Visa

So, you’ve decided where you want to study in Australia. You’ve applied, been accepted, and are officially enrolled. Congratulations! Now, this is where things start getting real. As we said, applying for your visa is one of the most important parts of studying abroad in Australia, but it can also be one of the most confusing, thanks to information overload online. We break down the student visa requirements for Australia here:

1. Select the Type of Visa You Need Once you’ve received your CoE from your respective university, apply for your student visa. Next, go to the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs visa webpage, where you’ll go through the steps of selecting the type of visa you need (student) and create an online profile.

2. Upload Your Important Documentation Once you’ve created your profile, upload all your important documentation that includes, but is not limited to:

  • A copy of your passport
  • Evidence of funds to support your study abroad experience
  • English language proficiency
  • Your Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement personal statement

3. Pay Your Visa Fees Additionally, you’ll need to fill out all pertinent student visa information and pay your visa fees. Fees vary depending on the country you’re coming from, so use the visa pricing estimator to get an idea of how much yours will cost.

Now that you’ve completed the visa application process, wait to receive a Transaction Reference Number (TRN). This is the number you’ll need to check on the status of your visa. If all requirements are fulfilled, it generally takes several weeks for approval of an Australian student visa—depending on your country of origin.

What to Study in Australia

Not sure what to study while in Australia? It all depends on your academic goals and what classes you need to take to fulfill your home university’s study abroad requirements.

Be sure to speak in-depth with your academic advisor to decide which courses are the best for you to take to ensure your credits transfer over once you’ve completed studying abroad in Australia.

To get an idea of some of the top areas of study for Australian students, here’s a quick rundown of some of the most popular degrees. Are you pursuing one of these, too? Let us know in a comment below!

Are There Online Study Abroad Programs in Australia for International Students?

Yes! International students can take online courses. Over 10,000 international students are currently enrolled in A ustralian online courses . However, there’s a condition to studying online: if you’re studying abroad in Australia, 2/3 of classes must be taken in regular, on-campus classrooms.

While we totally understand and love the convenience of studying online, you’ve most likely traveled from afar to attend Uni in Australia, so go all-in and experience the culture of your Australian university by completing courses on-campus. By being on-campus, you’ll not only meet new friends, but you’ll fully immerse yourself in Australian student life. You won’t regret it!

How Much Money Do I Need to Live and Study in Australia?

It doesn’t take much to persuade students to take the plunge and study in Australia, but it’s important to consider how you’ll fund your time abroad!

On average, the typical annual tuition costs for international undergraduate students is around $23,000 (USD). If you’re planning on studying in Australia as a graduate student, those costs around $26,000 (USD) per year.

Tuition rates vary from Uni to Uni, but fortunately, there are ways to save on your Australian study abroad experience. Be sure to research any grants, scholarships, and other financial aid that may be available to you.

Another way to save money is by living in a more affordable city and save on the additional cost of student housing. You may also want to consider getting a part-time job or paid internship while you study abroad to help offset living expenses and make a little spending cash, too.

When Is the Best Time to Study Abroad in Australia?

That’s a trick question! Anytime is a great time to study in Australia! But in all seriousness, weather-wise, it’s important to note that many international students will be in opposite seasons from their home country.

As we mentioned earlier, Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons might not be what you’re used to. This can make for a much-needed winter escape for students in the northern hemisphere since you’ll arrive to gorgeous, sunny summer skies in Australia.

Australia’s climate varies greatly throughout the country, so before you move, be sure to check the weather in your new city.

Where Should I Study in Australia?

Tons of amazing cities play host to some of Australia’s top universities. First off, your home-Uni will most likely already have your choices narrowed down for you, depending on their approved schools in Australia.

Take the time to research all your options and consider what you want to get out of your time while studying abroad in Australia. Do you want to attend a small or large university? Is campus life important to you? Do academic rankings for your major matter? Do you want your university to be in a large metropolitan area with plenty of things to do and places to see? These are all important questions to ask yourself before deciding on your school.

To make your decision a little easier, we’ve selected some of the most popular Australian cities for international students to study in, including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Ranked as the world’s most livable city seven years in a row, Melbourne is the coastal capital of the state of Victoria. According to Lord Mayor Sally Capp, Melbourne is Australia’s events, sporting, and culture hub. It’s no wonder why so many international students choose to study abroad in Melbourne.

This vibrant city is home to seven universities, with the University of Melbourne being the most widely recognised since it’s ranked #1 in all of Australia . In addition to being home base for multiple universities, the city of Melbourne also hosts satellite campuses for five other universities—offering students the convenience and flexibility of attending classes nearby.

Melbourne is an incredible city to live and play in! It’s known for its unique laneways (alleys) that wind throughout the city. You can get lost for hours walking. You’ll discover a new restaurant, café, shopping area, live music, museums, shops, and more every corner you turn.

Everyone is welcome in Melbourne and this city celebrates its diversity by regularly hosting cultural events and days to honor the variety of people who call Melbourne home. There is never a lack of things to do and see when you’re studying abroad in one of Australia’s most beautiful cities.

There are endless reasons why you should study in Sydney . The capital of New South Wales, and one of Australia’s largest cities, Sydney offers so much! From the incredible architecture of the Sydney Opera House to the harbour that connects people to outdoor activities galore, to the restaurants, museums, nightlife, and beaches, you’ll never run out of things to do while studying abroad in Sydney.

Students from all over the world come to Sydney to attend one of its dozen universities that offer top-notch programs in a variety of disciplines. Most notable is the University of Sydney, known for its cutting-edge research programs and progressive thinking.

But the city of Sydney doesn’t just have brains; it’s also home to some of the friendliest people in the world. You’ll make friends in no time, both at your new university and outside since there’s always something exciting to do when you live in Sydney.

Why study in Brisbane ? There are tons of reasons! The capital of Queensland, Brisbane is located alongside the Brisbane River and is Australia’s third-largest city. Unlike the wildly popular Melbourne and Sydney, Brisbane keeps a lower profile, but we like to say it’s one of Australia’s best-kept secrets.

Those who know Brisbane love it because it’s nowhere near as busy as Melbourne and Sydney, and its weather is celebrated as some of the best in all of Australia.

If you’re looking for a small(er) town feel, then Brisbane just might be the best option for you while studying abroad in Australia. Students can choose from two major universities, including the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology, as well as a handful of satellite campuses for various other schools. In total, over 19,000 international students opt to study abroad in Brisbane each year.

Partake in exciting outdoor activities around the city (don’t feel like trekking it to the beach? Try man-made Streets Beach instead), traverse Story Bridge, check out museums, or escape to nearby towns—the possibilities are endless in Brisbane.

The international-study friendly capital of South Australia, Adelaide is Australia’s fifth-largest city. Adelaide is considered one of the most ideal places for studying abroad in Australia thanks to its affordability, great schools like the University of Adelaide, exciting culinary scene, relaxed atmosphere, and awesome transportation options.

If you’re itching to work part-time or need an internship while studying abroad in Australia, then Adelaide is the place for you. According to Insider Guides, there’s a plethora of internship and work opportunities that’ll provide real-life work experience for international students.

When you’re not in school, check out new restaurants and bars, spend a day at the Adelaide Zoo, or take a day trip outside of town to the gorgeous wine country. Believe us, your social calendar will be full of enviable things to do while living in Adelaide.

Where Should I Stay While Studying Abroad in Australia and How Do I Find Where to Live?

Now that you’re caught up on some of the most popular Australian cities for international students to study in, let’s look at how to secure student housing in those areas.

First Things First: Do You Prefer On-Campus or Off-Campus Housing?

Before you pull the trigger on your living situation, decide if you want to live on-campus vs. off-campus .

There are lots of benefits to both living options. With on-campus housing, you typically don’t have to provide your own furniture since dormitories generally come fully furnished. You’re also in walking distance from class, it’s easy to socialize with other students who are studying abroad in Australia just like you, and most living expenses are rolled into your tuition.

Some universities require first-year undergrads to live on campus. But if you’re studying abroad in Australia, this most likely isn’t your first time living away from home, so we recommend you consider living off-campus to completely saturate yourself in Australian culture.

The benefits of living off-campus are even better than living on-campus in our opinion! Many off-campus housing options come furnished and are close to campus, and some of your monthly bills and amenities are still included in your rent too. Plus, with off-campus housing, you have less oversight and more freedom to do your thing. And did we mention that you get more space and privacy?

Best of all though, most student housing in Australia provides social spaces and opportunities to meet new people, so you can count on making tons of new friends both on-campus and off-campus.

If you’re ready to experience the fun of studying abroad in Australia, then let’s get down to it. The team at Unilodgers has curated a list of student apartments throughout Australia we think you’ll love.

Australia is the seventh most popular destination for U.S. students , and there is no surprise as to why. Known for its stunning natural landscapes, from the outback to the ocean reefs, there is no shortage of good views—and its diverse culture and delicious meat pies are sure to draw you in.

Whether you already booked a study abroad program in Australia or are just interested in how to prepare for this journey, you’ve come to the right place. Committing to a study abroad destination is a life changing decision, so it’s important to research what you should know about a country prior to departure.

Studying abroad can be an exciting-yet-intimidating period of your life, leading you through an unforgettable academic journey. Students may find themselves underprepared for such cultural differences, but these tips for studying abroad in Australia will help you make the most out of your trip!

15 best tips for studying abroad in Australia

a colorful map of australia full of push pins

Adventure is everywhere in Australia, with an abundance of things to see and do!

1. Understanding Indigenous culture is vital

One of the best study abroad in Australia tips would be to educate yourself on Indigenous culture. This is a vital part of understanding and acknowledging Australia’s history. There are a plethora of art galleries, heritage sites, and museums around Australia that can tell you all about the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander people.

The Australian Museum in Sydney offers a collection of indigenous art, artifacts, and a deep insight into the origins of Australia’s first inhabitants.

2. Attend the vibrant festival scene

No, not the electronic music festival scene…(although that exists here too). There are many different local and annual events held around major cities. These events highlight Australian food, art, music, and more.

Celebrate the Sydney festival and learn about Australian artists, or visit the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival for a taste of some amazing dishes. Research the time and place that you will be studying abroad in and plan for local events!

3. Embrace your outdoorsiness!

aerial view of Bondi Beach during the day

Bondi beach is home to some of the biggest surf waves that can reach up to 4 meters high.

Australia is packed full of amazing landscapes, from pristine beaches, to green rainforests, to the vast emptiness of the outback. Take advantage of this variety of scenery and embrace your inner athlete!

Were you looking to spend time taking surfing classes on Bondi Beach, or snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef? Or maybe you’re looking to hike and camp in one of their many beautiful national parks!

You can also visit hotspot destinations like the Daintree Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, or even the Whitsunday Islands to experience breathtaking views. Do whatever your heart desires, but just get out there and enjoy that open air!

4. The grading system is not the same

Grading tends to look a little different in Australia compared to the United States. The U.S. grading system follows a simple rule where every 10% decrease from 100% corresponds to a letter grade decrease until the failing grade of 50%. In Australia, however, a 50% is considered a “passing” grade. So don’t get stressed because D’s get degrees!

5. Respect coral reefs!

Underwater perspective of coral reef and fish

The Great Barrier Reef is a living ecosystem, home to over 400 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish.

If you’re going to study abroad in Australia, tips will naturally involve protecting the iconic reefs that surround the country. For example, did you know that certain chemicals found in big sunscreen brands are toxic to our oceans?

Popular sunscreen companies sell sunscreen that is not reef-safe so at the beach, try to avoid using certain sunscreens that may be harmful to Australia’s Coral Reefs. Be sure to research reef-safe sunscreens to ensure the safety of Australia’s beautiful reefs.

6. Get familiar with “tutorial” classes

The classroom culture in Australia has a different structure than you may be familiar with. Most universities have lectures and tutorial classes depending on the course you take. Lecture classes are pretty self-explanatory, as they are just formal presentations in a larger group setting.

A tutorial, however, is much like a seminar. These are smaller group classes that require participation. This may come in the form of student presentations, class discussions, problem solving coursework, and more.

These lectures and tutorials aim to prepare students for one big test or paper at the end of the unit. Otherwise, coursework is light and students are more than capable of having a balanced personal life!

7. Relaxation is the Aussie way

Aussie life can be vibrant and casual so adapting to this lifestyle can be easy. Outings to the beach or the local markets will help you adjust your work-life balance. You’ve probably heard of the famous Barbecues held year round, so maybe organize one with some local friends and fully immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Australia!

8. you can get a discount on public transportation.

the “Queensland Rail” train

The Queensland Rai is a prime example of the different types of transportation you can take in Australia

Wherever you are studying abroad, make sure you know how to get around! Most cities are bike-friendly and have bike lanes and sidewalks all around. If you don’t have a bike, research if your city-of-study offers a concession!

Students are eligible for discounts or a concession fare in most big cities in Australia so make sure to get that money off. But if you’re in need of a quick trip, rideshare apps such as Uber, Ola, and Didi are popular all over Australia.

9. Budget WISELY

Relative to the United States, living expenses, eating out, and store-bought items can be more expensive. You can use websites like Numbeo to compare prices of goods in Australia to that of the U.S.

Make sure to budget wisely while you study abroad and try organizing and tracking your spending. The best advice for studying abroad in Australia includes knowing how to minimize costs: buy second-hand textbooks or take advantage of student discounts.

10. Tipping is a kind gesture

But unlike in the U.S, the act of tipping is not so ingrained in Australian culture. Tips are usually seen as a generous bonus and not an expectation like in the United States. If you’d like to tip, you can use the general 10-15% rule.

11. Watch out for wildlife

3 adult wallabies and a joey

Contrary to popular belief, these creatures are wallabies, not kangaroos!

Conservation is held in high respect in Australia, so some advice on how to protect their wildlife while studying abroad could be useful! Most beaches post signs on what to look out for, whether that be safety information on jellyfish or sharks, or just general information about how to protect marine life.

Queensland is home to some of the most important turtle nesting sites and it’s important to protect these vulnerable babies! If you plan on driving, make sure to be extra careful at dawn or dusk. You might see these signs everywhere as a reminder that it’s important to look out for crossing animals or otherwise risk getting into an accident.

12. Join clubs!

Universities are home to a heaping number of extracurricular activities which can be a great way to meet new people. Try to participate in a student-run organization or an intramural sport! Popular sports include cricket, football, rugby, and soccer, so get out on that field and indulge yourself in Australia’s lively sports culture.

13. Visit iconic landmarks

exterior view of the Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House, built in 1973, is an architectural masterpiece.

Immerse yourself in the history of Australia by visiting its most memorable landmarks. Choosing which city you want to study abroad in is difficult when there are so many great options . Major cities such as Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane , and Perth hold a number of Australia’s most treasured places.

Some ideas include the Melbourne Cricket Ground, or the popular Sydney Opera House, but wherever you go you are sure to be surrounded by landmarks that you can enjoy.

14. Practice sustainability

It’s important to practice sustainability in a country with rich biodiversity. There is a natural beauty present and it is important to respect local wildlife and their environment. If you plan on camping on your off days, make sure to read up on National Park regulations.

A common rule is to always leave the campground better than when you arrived! You can also adopt sustainable practices such as minimizing plastic use; carrying a water bottle and reusable bag with you can make a huge difference in the waste you may produce!

15. Social etiquette isn’t so different

flag of Australia waving in the wind

There are six states in Australia—choose wisely and reap the benefits of any one of these great places.

Although most Australians’ first language is English, there are certain slang words and social customs and greetings you should read up on. Interacting with locals and your peers may be intimidating, but you can navigate with ease if you know the social norms.

Start with a casual conversation and don’t put so much pressure on yourself to use formal language. We guarantee that you’ll be saying “mate” by the end of your trip!

Next steps to study abroad in Australia

  • Choosing the right institution and program : Research some of the best study abroad programs in Australia . Choose from a wide range of universities you can select and do some online tours. Remember you don’t have to choose courses only related to your major! Look into the course options that are provided by your university and choose what you are interested in.
  • Understanding the visa process: Student Visa applications sound scary, but the instructions are really well structured. Look into the requirements, application timeline, and necessary documents before starting. Apply online at the official Australian Immigration website and remember to start this application process long before the start of your trip (keep in mind that most applications take up to four weeks to process).
  • Think about your pre-departure arrangements! Important tasks to figure out prior to your departure include setting up health or travel insurance , accommodations (if not included in your program), and organizing your finances. Finally, it’s important not to stress yourself out and just get excited about participating in a life changing experience!
  • Talk to your university: Don’t forget to have all your cards in order and let your current university know about your plans. Talk to a study abroad advisor about specific advice for studying abroad in Australia. They can help you take your next steps and figure out how credits may be applied to your home university.

must do's when studying in Australia, what to do when studying in australia

Getting to Australia requires a lot of patience – and a good neck pillow! The most common flight path is from LAX with a flight lasting up to 14 hours. However, once you land, there are tons of great places to live, study or just visit for the weekend! Here are some “can’t miss” places in Australia that most study abroad students explore.

must-visit when in Australia, must-visit when in Sydney, must-do when studying in australia

4. Coogee Beach Imagine yourself relaxing on a picturesque Australian beach, the fresh Harbour air cooling you down as you observe fellow beachgoers picnicking, playing Frisbee, and enjoying the historic “ocean baths.” All that could be a reality if you choose to “study” abroad in Australia. While Coogee is notorious for jagged shores that form “ Wedding Cake Island ” and responsible for destroying the 180-meter Coogee Pier in 1934, the area is also the perfect access to parks, cliffs, and other smaller beaches. Aussie abroad-er Maci Katz lived in the heart of Coogee Beach, and recalls afternoons of grilling out with her housemates and taking the three to five mile walk to Bondi Beach as some of her favorite Aussie memories. She says, “When my roommates and I would come back from a long weekend away, we would always say how happy we were to come home.”

Living in Japan improved my Japanese, so after returning to Australia I was able to to go straight into the advanced stream of Japanese at university.

I cried for the first time in forever. Although I also ended up smiling. I can’t be sad that it’s over, as I’m so happy it happened. Thank you everyone who helped my exchange happen!

An experience I will never forget. I enhanced my Japanese skills and made connections with friends that feel like family now. AIIU was a great exchange program!

My ten month exchange in Japan was an experience I will never forget. AIIU give students like me a once in a lifetime opportunity which I am truly grateful for.

There is a special place in my heart for my Japanese friends, and I’ll always keep coming back to them. Thank you for the best year of my life!

I could go on for years about all of the things that I have been blessed with experiencing. My host families have been extraordinary and I really felt at home there!

Respect for other people came through strongly in our student’s actions. We saw her becoming more confident and willing to engage in conversations.
