What People Say About Us

Thank you Egypt Fun Tours for a most memorable trip. I admit I didn’t do any of the planning (it was all done by my boyfriend) but as you can read in the reviews below Hani (the owner of Egypt Fun Tours) is superbly organized and accommodating with scheduling.

My boyfriend and I, and our dearest mutual friend, booked the 7Days-6Nights tour. In short time, we visited Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor sailing down the down the Nile, pit stopping to see key sites at these location – and so much more!!! We got to know the ancient and modern egypt in depth thanks to Hani’s impressive knowledge. He also enlightened us on the people and their beliefs and went as far as showing us what a typical life looks like. I cannot express the level of personalized service Hani offered us. He was flexible to adapt to our requirements and added sites to our schedule that was not part of the tour simply to ensure we were 100% satisfied with our experience in Egypt.

I went to Egypt practically blind-folded, not knowing what to expect, especially considering the time we had decided to go (December 2020 – we were the first group that Hani met with after months of having to put his tour agency on hold considering the pandemic) yet he managed to surpass all of our expectations. I felt so incredibly lucky for us to have stumbled on Hani. I would recommend Egypt Fun Tours to anyone and everyone. It was truly, HANDS DOWN, the best cultural experience I’ve ever had. You’ll be in the best of hands.

Nille cruise,Luxor and Aswan where amazing sites to see, specially when you have with you the best tour guide in Egypt .Hamada was absolutely fantastic, lots of information and some of them not spoken by others. This guy was not only a simple tour guide for us, he became a good friend also. Was a one in lifetime experience. Highly recommend Fun Tours. Really a great experience.

Hamada was incredible! So knowledgeable and kind. He had information about every item, street corner, and relic we looked at. Any questions we had, he had answers! He even made sure to give us tips while walking through the crowds so that’s we would feel more comfortable when being approached by vendors. Oh and the food?! He took us to the best places! Delicious food!! We tried Egyptian fried chicken, falafel for the first time, the best shawarma in the city (we love food). We even got to meet his beautiful wife and children and try some “French” Egyptian coffee in their home! Truly made friends for life!! We’ve promised to host him and the family when they travel to America for the first time! Such an incredible experience, and Hamada (and family) made it that much more memorable and amazing!

Trip of a lifetime!! COVID SAFE!! Knowledgeable guide who loves to share the magic of Egypt with tourists. Friendly and accomodating. This company goes to the extreme to make clients feel welcome and help you. Family company who takes good care of their support staff. Must book the 7 night trip which gives you a great feel for all of the history in upper and lower Egypt. The guide is an expert photographer and historian. He knows so much about each site and the culture. You MUST take this guide to teach you all about Egypt!

Dahabiya sailing on the Nile

Dahabiya sailing on the nile – romance of the past with modern comfort.

We’re the proud owners of 3 beautifully crafted traditional Dahabiya boats, with 5-6 luxurious cabins and suites each. They are also available for private charter. See also our Nile Dahabiya Boats website

A journey on this legendary river aboard a Dahabiya Nile cruise offers the romance of the past – with every modern comfort and convenience. A wonderful mix of superb sightseeing, traditional cuisine, and attentive personal service. Adventure & Luxury Awaits…

Stopping at the sites others don’t see The relatively small, manoeuvrable Dahabiyas are able to sail to less accessible monuments, islands in the river and villages along the banks, where the huge cruise ships never come or moor. You’ll find no flashing discos on board, but it is might be possible to attend a show by local musicians under a twinkling night sky.

Pure Wind Power: True sailing boats – not motorized Our traditional two-masted Dahabiya Nile boats are based on the design of original Dahabiya boats from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and are powered by the wind only. No engines! – Just the sounds of the breeze wafting through the sail and the water breaking over the bow.

Dahabiya sailing itineraries and sightseeing Our three Dahabiya boats, The Orient , Zekrayaat and Loulia , sail up and down the Nile between Esna and Aswan. We offer a guaranteed choice between two itineraries: 4 nights upriver from Esna to Aswan, 3 nights downriver from Aswan to Esna. No minimum number of passengers, with fixed dates for each trip on each Dahabiya Nile cruise. Read more about our  Dahabiya Nile cruises .

What It’s Like on a Nile Cruise

A nile cruise is an essential part of most trips to egypt, and a dahabiya sailboat cruise is the way to get more out of the experience..

  • Copy Link copied

Several dahabiyas sailing

A dahabiya is a shallow-bottomed wooden sailboat that offers a different kind of Nile cruise experience.

The Nile River is full of a variety of cruise ships: large tourist vessels, midsize hotel boats, luxury vessels with gorgeous decor and air-conditioning throughout, some even with swimming pools on top. They all travel between Luxor and Aswan in three or four nights, on itineraries packaged with land exploration that may include time in Cairo as well. But my friends and I wanted more time on the river itself, and something more intimate—like the kind of wooden boat Cleopatra might have sailed on. That’s why we booked a Nile cruise on a dahabiya .

A dahabiya is a great way to experience the river and the sites along its banks, as long as you are willing to forgo some higher-end luxury trappings for a more local, rustic experience.

What is a dahabiya?

A tray of snacks on deck of sailboat

Freshly made meals and snacks are included in the price of the trip; alcohol costs extra.

The word dahabiya is derived from the Arab word for “gold,” highlighting its ancient royal origins. The wooden sailboats, with only two decks and shallow bottoms, have been an option for travelers on the Nile since the 19th century and are based on designs that go back millennia.

The company my friends and I chose for our Nile experience was Nour El Nil, which has been around for more than a decade and operates seven dahabiyas with distinctive red-and-white striped sails fore and aft. The company was the brainchild of three partners: a Parisian interior designer who does the decor, a Mexican-born businessman, and an Egyptian sailor who oversees construction of the vessels.

Their boats have 8 to 12 cabins (accommodating 16 to 24 passengers), and they sail under wind power when the weather cooperates and are pulled by a small tugboat when there’s little breeze (which happened frequently on our sailing).

Nour El Nil has gained a reputation as a luxury operator, and in some ways it is, but in other ways the experience is on the rugged side, appealing to travelers like me with a sense of adventure.

The opulence is in the small-ship and small-group experience, with everyone dining at a long table on the open deck, waving at one of the 13 crew members for a drink, docking at historical sites and villages that larger ships can’t access, and exploring ancient ruins with expert guides.

The onboard experience

Six passengers sitting in the open-air top deck under a canopy

The open-air top deck serves as living room, dining room, and a place to relax.

We were five couples traveling together for a friend’s birthday celebration. Our boat was the 12-cabin Adelaïde , and we shared it with 12 other travelers.

Most of the time, we found ourselves lounging on the plush, colorful, fabric-covered chairs, sofas, and daybeds on the open deck, which is shaded by tarps and festooned with chandeliers for an environment that is practical, with a touch of class. Unlike the hotel ships with indoor dining rooms, the deck was our dining space and lounge. This is where you catch views, feel occasional breezes (including from ceiling fans), admire the sails, spend time chatting or reading or playing games such as Scrabble and Hearts with your sail mates. If you’re me, it’s where you might stretch out in the hammock and fantasize about Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile (written at the famed Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan) and imagine backstories for your fellow passengers—which in our case hailed from the United States, Germany, France, Poland, and Brazil.

Interior of a bedroom on a dahabiya Nile cruise

The boat had 10 rooms like this and 2 panoramic suites.

The cabins are all on the lower deck, with soft white linens, chandeliers, and Old World–style artwork, windows with sliding shutters and screens, and a mirrored bathroom reminiscent of nautical heads (the shower had no curtain or door, so the bathroom got wet when you used it). The boat also has two “panoramic suites,” each with floor-to-ceiling windows and an indoor sitting area. There aren’t private balconies as on some of the hotel ships. Portable air-conditioning units kept the rooms cool, though they get turned off in the middle of the night when the boat cuts its main generator to save on gas (ceiling fans and lights, on a separate system, remain on).

Sense of place was a constant. Our Egyptian crew, dressed in flowing galabiyas of various hues, sometimes struggled with English but were always willing to figure out what you wanted. If the fabrics on deck were end-of-season dusty and faded, they matched the colors of desert. Other views were surprisingly green riverbanks and mangroves, and as we lazed around with cocktails, we enjoyed watching village life go by: water buffalo wading in the river, fishermen angling in their small boats, farmers in carts pulled by donkeys. Sometimes, we’d hear calls for prayer ring out from minarets.

Crew members of a dahabiya sailboat sitting on the deck

Part of the fun of a dahabiya is getting to know the crew, who take care of everything from sailing the boat to cooking fresh meals.

You knew it was mealtime when a crew member walked around the ship ringing a little bell. We were served family-style on a table set with textiles and pottery, with a delicious menu based on whatever was fresh and available from farmers and fishermen along the route. One day that might be lamb, another roasted ducks or fried Nile perch. There was an array of flavorful vegetable stews, whether eggplant, okra, or zucchini. And bowls of tahini, french fries, and flatbread were constants on the table.

All meals were included in the price of the trip, but booze cost extra. Still, it was a bargain: a gin or vodka tonic made from local liquor was less than $2.50, a bottle of local wine was about $13 ($19.50 if you wanted to upgrade to a bottle imported from South Africa).

Another bargain: massages for about $44, delivered by a crew member in the ship’s little used indoor lounge on the cabin deck.

Ancient sites and shoreside activities

dahabiya sailboat on the Nile river at a green pasture along the shore from Nour El Nil cruises

Sometimes we pulled up to villages or off-the-beaten path areas.

Courtesy of Dylan Chandler/Nour El Nil

Of course, a very nice boat experience is one thing, but if you’ve come all the way to Egypt, you also expect to tour ancient historic sites and learn a thing or two. Nour El Nil’s contract Egyptologists deliver small-group tours with aplomb. For us English speakers, there was Adel Abu ElHagag, an expert on hieroglyphics who was determined to teach us to recognize the symbols for Cleopatra, among others.

While hotel ships follow a set route (you’ll see them docking at the same sites at basically the same times), our dahabiya cruise was a tad more improvised and able to include key sites on and off the standard tourist path. Our small boat could tie up to a tree, so shoreside exploration went beyond the river cruise norm, and with no printed itinerary, every day brought a sense of adventure. Crew leant a hand as we sometimes walked the plank or up dirt hillsides. Sometimes, we walked across two other Nour El Nil boats that we at times sailed with in a convoy.

A few people outside the tombs at El Kab

Because of its small size and less rigid schedule, dahabiyas can stop at spots along the Nile that bigger ships can’t access, such as the tombs at El Kab.

For instance, the typical Nile cruise does not visit El Kab, the site of colorfully painted tombs and temples where Adel read hieroglyphics detailing the life stories of nobles and priests. “It’s like buying confession,” he said of the artistic depictions, dating from 1550 to 1050 B.C.E. “What you did in your life. Did you look at your neighbor’s wife?” But we also hit main sites such as the temple to the falcon god Horus in Edfu.

Some of my friends would say a highlight of the dahabiya cruise—and definitely not offered by the larger river ships—was swimming in the Nile. I am too much of a germophobe to try that.

My magical moment came one day in the early evening, when about 15 of us passengers disembarked at a narrow point in the Nile River near the temple of Gebel el-Silsila and its sandstone quarry that provided much of the material for several of the temples and tombs we’d see on our trip. We passed through a dusty brick village and walked higher into a moonscape of imposing sand dunes to watch the sunset. Biblical stories came to mind, even though our trek of a few miles crossed a small piece of the Nubian Desert, not the Sinai. The off-the-beaten-path setting was breathtaking in its sparseness, especially as the sun, a fiery orange orb, dipped below a distant dune. This is the way to cruise the Nile.

Nour El Nil is one of a few companies offering a dahabiya experience on the Nile. The seven boats range from 16 to 24 passengers. Wi-Fi, meals, and shore excursions are all included; alcohol and tips for the crew are not (I spent about $140 on tips).

Additional options

Cairo-based Nile Dahabiya Boats has four 10- to 15-passenger boats doing a three- or four-night route between Esna and Aswan, double occupancy fares from $360 per person.

Luxor and Aswan Travel represents 11 dahabiyas, fares from $835 per person for a three-night cruise.

The advantage of cruising the Nile by dahabiya versus a cruise ship are many. First, the dahabiya is a sail boat that offers all the comforts of a cruise ship but experienced in a more personal level. The number of passengers is much more smaller than those of a cruise ship, which can carry up to one hundred passengers. Our sail boat was shared with only five other passengers.

Second, the dahabiya, because of its smaller size can dock or moor anywhere along the Nile without any difficulty. Thus allowing the visitor to experience places only heard of but never experienced by the cruise ship traveler, such as El-Kab and the ancient town of Nekheb with walls that date back 7000 BC. Also, the experience of walking through the small villages in the desert on the way to the quarry of Gebel El-Silsila. One can stop along the way and admire petroglyphs etched on the rocks, predating 10,000 BC. Visiting the markets of Daraw was a dream come true for me, as I got to witness market rituals that haven't changed for centuries.

Third, the food in the Orient Dahabiya was fresh authentic Egyptian food, prepared and served with the traveler in mind and not buffet style. On our last evening we were served a delicious turkey, which my wife had the honor of carving.

Last but not least, our tour guide to the monuments and historic sites, Salah Elhawary, was an experienced and knowledgeable Egyptologyst with a good command of the English language.

To conclude, language was not a barrier, as English is Egypt's second language. We felt safe, were treated like special guests and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. On behalf of my wife, and myself our most sincere thanks to the captain, members of the crew and tour guide who made us feel special. God bless you all. We highly recommend it. Pictures will follow

Welcome to the forum - Glad you had the great time we all expect to have.

At least one puzzling bit however. At Gibel el Silsilah you mention walking though villages to get there. I understood, as further down in this album, that the dahabiyas just parked next to the chapel and it was a very short walk. Did yours park further away to allow you to walk through the villages? It must have been cooler than when we went! As these photos show https://www.flickr.com/photos/elaref/sets/72157632255899220/ , we went by road on the east bank and got a motor boat across.

Only way to post pictures is to write a review (say about the company you used) and post pictures to that review.

Alternatively, if you have a photo account somewhere, just link to an album or individual photo, as above.

Sorry - forgot - daytime temps in Feb, before any wind-chill factor from the very cold wind was 62°F at times!.

The pool was OK - It was getting out and to your (lack of) sun-bed to get a towel that was the problem!!

Thank you for the hint to post pictures. I have already written a review but there were no options to post pictures. I will try re-posting it.

The Best Way To See The Nile – Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Last Updated April 18, 2023 William Tang

You are here: Home » Attractions & Experiences » The Best Way To See The Nile – Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Egypt presents an ancient past that is full of intrigue and wonder.  As the old adage says, “Egypt is the gift of the Nile” and it sure is with a Dahabiya Nile cruise along this marvellous river.  It’s as timeless of a journey as it was in the late 18th century.

Despite the political turmoil, savvy travellers are seizing the opportunity to visit well-known and secret temples and tombs.  While there was a time when there were easily 350 Nile cruise boats, numbers have dwindled down to 60 which makes it the perfect opportunity to visit with no crowds.

Where to stay in Luxor?

  • Since you’ll be starting in Luxor, I’d recommend either staying in the West Bank where it’s much quieter and has more of a local feel to it such as at the Villa Nile House or you can be on the city side (East Bank) at the Winter Palace .

The Dahabiya Nile Cruise

The full nile experience, kom ombo temple, sandstone quarry of gebel el-silsila, local village life, temple of edfu, book your dahabiya nile cruise experience, the backstory of how i went, things to know before you go.

old poster of felluca and dahabiya nile cruise

From the moment we were greeted by the banks of the Nile in Aswan and all the way throughout the 3 day journey downstream to Esna, being aboard Djed Egypt Travel ‘s The Orient was most magical experience during my entire time in Egypt.

So what is a Dahabiya ?  In Arabic, it literally means ‘the golden one’ and is essentially a large sailing boat with two large lateen sails.  Think of it as a house-boat.  In its heyday, archeologists, wealthy adventurers travelled through Egypt along the Nile in these very same boats just as the ancient Egyptians did.  Today, these are 19th century replicas of the original boats but you wouldn’t be able to tell because being onboard will literally transform you to that golden age of travel.

dahabiya nile cruise lower deck

While the winds were not strong enough to carry us downstream from South to North, a small tugboat pulled us along at a snail crawl’s pace – the perfect speed.

The minute you step aboard you immediate sense that you jumping into a time forgotten with its mix of elegance and old world glamour.   Authentic period wallpapers line the bedroom, furniture and artifacts come from an antique shop, shiny metals can barely be found, and there’s barely a trace of modern technology beyond the air condition which you’re happy to have at night.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

This large awkward shaped vessel has a top deck which is perfectly designed for lounging and relaxing.  It’s here where you’ll be eating all your meals.  It’s also here where you can hang out in a hammock in the shade, reading a book ancient Egyptian history from the library below, hang out along the railings to watch the unpredictable sights that come from the fertile lands that line the famous river, or grab a beach chair and lounge under the sun.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

Down below, Dahabiyas such as The Orient only contain five cabins.  Yes you read that correctly, even at maximum capacity, these boats can only carry 10 passengers.  That’s a wonderful thing because what you get is a truly private experience.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

The best part is perhaps the crew that runs the ship.  From deckhands, the captain, and chef to your own Egyptologist, everything feels like a custom tailored experience that is meant to impress.  Every member of your crew is at your service the entire time and you barely have to lift a finger.  And then you have the onboard Egyptologist.  If there’s one thing that truly made this cruise so amazing, I would say it’s because of Abdulla’s encyclopedia of knowledge of ancient Egypt combined with his ability to communicate complex stories, and infectious energy and enthusiasm.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

There’s the food of course which were both authentic and delicious.  There was never a moment when I felt hungry and there was always a good variety of food for everyone.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

What makes the Dahabiya Nile cruise so thrilling is the fact that you truly get to see a part of Egypt that isn’t accessible any other way.  From the morning when you wake up to the morning sounds of being moored by a local farmer’s water buffalos, your senses start absorbing a symphony of sights.

There’s life aboard the ship where you never know what you’re going to see.  Ropes creak as the skipper pulls the giant rudder in place.  Fishermen float by casting out nets.  Horses take a peek up before going back to munching on the grass.  The pace is peaceful and idyllic, with the river breeze flowing through and the sun beating brightly.

That is just the beginning of course because the main event are the planned excursions everyday.  Accompanied by your Egyptologist, you get to visit temples, tombs, quarries, and villages that are practically only accessible by boat.  Excitement courses your veins when you get to see hieroglyphs carved on stone walls, remnants of paintings of stories long forgotten, and full tombs of nobles very few have seen.  It’s in this moment that you understand why archeologists have been fascinated with Egypt for centuries.

Throughout it all, Abdulla for us was indispensable to our sponge of excitement.  With clipboard, paper, and sharpie in hand, he gave us all the background, anecdotes, stories, and deciphering of hieroglyphs to give us a very coherent picture of what we were seeing.  Without our Egyptologist, we might as well have been mummies walking through empty corridors.  You know you’re not going to remember most of what he says but in the moment, you really do feel the locations come to life as you get a better understanding of the people and culture.  You also come away with the feeling of just how advanced the civilization truly was.

And you know what the beauty of it all is?  You barely encounter a large crowd anywhere you go.  Only years ago, sights along the Nile were overloaded with tourists but because of the political turmoil, most of these places that you do visit are all but deserted.   Safety is also not even close to being a concern as the local farmers couldn’t be bothered with the affairs of the capital and there is also a visible security presence.

Detailed Dahabiya Nile Cruise Review

We actually went back a second time and sailed the dahabiya Loulia on a 4-day journey from Luxor to Aswan (the other direction).

Highlights of the Dahabiya Nile Cruise Itinerary

For those that are interested in all of the excursions we did on our Dahabiya Nile cruise, take a look below.  I’ve made sure to pack them with photos!

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

As the first stop on any cruise itinerary going from the South to the North, pay your respects to a temple that pays homage to crocodiles and the crocodile god Sobek.  As a double temple, it is also devoted to Horus, the Falcon God and son of Isis.  It’s not a large temple but for us it was a great introductory temple to learn about King Ptolemy’s dynasty.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

It’s surprising to say but I was probably the most impressed with the morning of our second day where we were moored at one of the few sites along the river that provided the stones used in all of the major temples and tombs.  Walking through the quarry, we learned about the slaves that worked there and could see the full scope of the operation there with remnants of half cut stone and marks from chisels.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

A nice change of pace is the chance to stretch your legs and walk through a few small local villages throughout the cruise.  There’s no tourist sights here but it gives you a true picture of life in the countryside where palm and mango trees thrive and there’s plenty to live off of thanks to the giver of life, the Nile.

the orient dahabiya nile cruise

The star attraction along the cruise is definitely this enormous structure in the town of Edfu.  As one of the best-preserved of all temples in Egypt, this Temple of Horus is plain impressive.  From miles away you can spot the 36 meter high pylon which acts as a gateway. Beyond, there’s the courtyard, antechambers, halls, and shrine  to explore.   The main hall is perhaps the most interesting with 12 columns and walls decorated with reliefs of the temple’s founding.

nekheb ancient town walk

In the ancient town of Nekheb, there is a significant archaeological site along the nile where you get to explore remains of temples and tombs cut right into the cliff.  Having not done The Valley of the Kings yet, I found this to be fascinating despite being for lesser known princes, priests, and generals.

Dahabiya Nile Cruises Are The Best Way To See Egypt

sunset on the djed egypt travel dahabiya orient nile cruise

Having done it myself, I can’t see how you can do a trip to Egypt without cruising the River Nile.  Sure there are the big sights like the Great Pyramids, Luxor, and Abu Simbel but there’s something to be said for the tranquility of the Nile.

  • Being a smaller vessel, you’re able to moor in places that the bigger cruisers can’t stop
  • Intimate and private experience
  • Practically personal Egyptologists where you don’t have to be afraid to ask questions.  You are in control of what you want to learn
  • This may change when tourism picks back up again but there are less crowds to deal with
  • Walk through small villages which you normally don’t get to do in the larger tours

memphis tours 5% promotion discount code

I had just come from an exhausting National Geographic-like adventure in Ethiopia that opened my eyes to incredible experiences like the Donga and countless number untouched tribes but a certain amount of fatigue set in, food poisoning had gotten the best of me, and my travel companion and I were ready to divert from our previous plans of hiking through the Simien Mountains.  Deep down I was kind of glad.

In our last days of Ethiopia, we made drastic changes to our itinerary , cancelling old flight plans and booking new ones.  With our 3G connection on our phones, Steve did almost all of the replanning with his reward wizardry and research.  The question was, “where can we go from Ethiopia?”  There were a lot of options with routing options galore but when we looked at all of them, the one place that really stuck out was Egypt.  Sure there was some bad press there but since when has that stopped me right?

When Steve walked us through his plan and told me there’s a chance we can make it work to detour from Arba Minch in Ethiopia up to Cairo via Addis Ababa, and that we’d be able to connect that with a flight southwards to Aswan to catch this cruise along the Nile, I was ecstatic.

Last Minute Travel Hacking

Last minute flight changes feel scary but with a few flight searches and calls, we were able to grab seats quite easily. Here’s what we did.

The way that the zones are divided in Africa, Egypt is actually considered to be a different zone from Ethiopia.  Understanding this, we hacked a crazy fare together which took us from Arba Minch -> Addis Ababa -> Cairo -> Addis Ababa -> Johannesburg.  The trick of course is that Johannesburg is part of the same African zone as Ethiopia (hence domestic so to speak) and we just never took the flights going down to South Africa.

This cost 35,000 United MileagePlus Miles and $64.80 USD.

Yellow Fever:  There are no Yellow Fever warnings for the country itself but they will most definitely check if you come from one.  Despite Ethiopia not checking for Yellow Fever certificate, I am sure glad I had it because it was one of the first things they asked after we got off the plane.

Entry Visa:   Before going through customs, you have to pay to get your entry visa.  The strange part of this is that the instructions aren’t particularly clear.  It took me awhile but eventually I saw a few booths run by banks/foreign exchange it seemed and this is where you pay for your visa.  It costs $25 USD so I would say it’s useful to have USD but if not they will always do the conversion for you.

SIM Cards:   After you pick up your bags at T3, you’ll see a number of cell phone company booths.  I settled on Etisalat where I was able to purchase a SIM and credit for 95 EGP (a littler over $5 USD).  This is probably the easiest place to get a SIM card so I recommend doing it in Cairo.

Sleeping at Cairo International Airport:   Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to get a hotel and you have to make the tough call to rough it out at the airport.  If you’re lucky and you have a connecting flight you can stay airside (inside part of the airport) but if you’re like us where you have separate flight tickets, you have to pick up your bags and sleep landside (public area of the terminal).  If you’re in the main T3, there’s not going to be a really comfortable place to sleep besides standard chairs with armrests.  If you take a look at Sleeping In Airports , they say that in T3, Level 3 (landside) and Zone H as having a lot of lightly padded benches.  Also good to know that they will tell you that security to get into the check in counters opens at 4:30AM but it was more like just past 5AM when they actually did.

Mosquitos:  If there’s one thing I could nitpick, it’d be the flies and mosquitoes that were in the room at night.  The solution is what they do is fumigate the entire room so by the time we get back to the room, all of them die.  Problem is, because there are so many of them, they just kind of fall to the ground.  Knowing this, every night I made sure all of my things were under the sheets or zipped inside my bag.  I know the bugs are hard to control because of the season and where the boat is moored but I would’ve appreciated a vacuum of the room.

What’s included and what’s extra:  All meals are included but beverages are extra including beer but it is all quite cheap.  Tips are extra as well.  All admission included.

Thank you for stopping by! In the end, we opted for Djed because the price was more affordable while still offering a similar experience. Admittedly, Nour El Nil does provide a higher level of luxury, but truthfully, we never felt like we were missing out on anything during our time with Djed. We did visit Esna Temple, which was our starting point. However, one slight drawback with Djed was that we didn’t have the village music onboard. Nevertheless, there are plenty of similar experiences available on the ground in Luxor or Aswan. If you have any further inquiries, feel free to ask without hesitation!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Ah yes, they don’t have any music onboard other than on the farewell day but otherwise it sounded like you had a great time!

What would it be like doing this in summer when it is so hot? We are planning to go in July this year.

March 26, 2023 at 3:48 PM

Hey Sandra! In general, the summer does get quite hot. That said, the dahabiya is designed to be under the shade so you won’t be in direct sun. There’s also the library underneath. The cabins do have air condition units but note that they only run when there is power which is typically 7AM-8:30AM and 6PM-10:30PM. In terms of the excursions themselves, there’s no denying that it’ll be hot so make sure you have the right wide-brimmed hat and quick-dry and cooling clothing. They’ll do their best to not have you standing out in the sun but in many places its unavoidable.

Based on your recommendation I booked a dahabiya cruise with Djed during our trip in November. Did you also do a felucca ride? Thinking it might not be worth it/needed to do a felucca ride if we’re going to be spending three days on a dahabiya. Thanks!

August 12, 2022 at 12:41 AM

The felucca ride option is a great add on but I wouldn’t say it’s mandatory. We didn’t opt for it because we felt the same way and there was plenty to do already. I know the felucca vibe is different because it’s a much smaller boat and it’s in a different area (Aswan) but I don’t think it’ll really make or break your trip.

Inspired by your posts about the Dahabiya cruise! Curious why you chose to book through Memphis vs directly with Djed? After reading your article(s) I reached out to Djed and received a response fairly quickly, which include a quote, but no response on any clarification emails, which concerns me. After re-reading your post, I just noticed that you actually booked through Memphis. Perhaps this is why you ended up dealing with Memphis?

January 24, 2022 at 11:08 AM

Hey Chris! I actually booked directly with Djed on my most recent trip. My very first trip after connecting abruptly from Ethiopia was with Memphis so I have experience dealing with both. I’d say that from my experience Djed is just a bit slower in terms of communication but they always end up making sure you’re taken care of. Skype is their preferred method of communication I’ve found so once you get started over e-mail, I would suggest connecting over there to have more real-time communication instead of waiting for the back and forth. I didn’t have any issues with Memphis our first go around and it was out of last-minuteness because we needed something quick and they came up in search but after I realized who the operator actually was, I made sure to book directly for the second trip.

August 13, 2020 at 3:49 PM

Hi Will! Your article and Youtube video review are awesome! Going to Egypt in a couple of years and looking to have the Dahabiya experience. Just curious as to what made you decide on going with Djed rather than Nour El Nil? I think their itineraries are pretty much the exact same. I believe you got to see the Esna temple, correct? Did you get to experience the traditional village music while onboard? Thank you again for your insights.

Will Tang says

August 14, 2020 at 4:10 PM

Thanks so much for dropping by! Ultimately we choose Djed because the price was more palatable for something that was similar. Granted, I think Nour El Nil does take it up a notch when it comes to luxury but in all honesty I never felt like anything was missing from our experience. Yes we visited Esna Temple which was where we started. We didn’t get the village music onboard though so that could be one knock on Djed although there are plenty of those types of experiences you can find on the ground in Luxor or Aswan. If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!

February 16, 2019 at 7:28 PM

Thanks for the great article! How days nights? Is there another way to see those destinations besides on the water? Thanks Jeannette

February 17, 2019 at 12:53 PM

Hi Jean! We were on this cruise for 6 days. In terms of places like Kom Ombo Temple, Temple of Edfu, and the tombs, I am sure you can do it by land so it’s definitely possible. The Sandstone Quarry of Gebel el-Silsila is probably more difficult to get to if you’re not by the water. You just have to find a tour operator that is willing to take you to these spots.

December 13, 2018 at 9:59 PM

Thanks Lesley! I think it’s the best way to see Egypt – it’s safe, relaxing, and off-the-beaten-path especially with how less people go now. Definitely consider them if you go!

Hi John, I don’t actually operate Djed so I would certainly reach out to them directly (link is in the blog post). Excited for your trip though. Since 2020 is so far out, you’re definitely getting a spot :)

The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

  • Tour Highlights

Important Notes

Because it is such a genuine and romantic method to travel along the river, very much like in the time of the Pharaohs, the Orient Star Dahabiya Nile Boat 4 Days is highly recommended for those looking to cruise along the Nile.

Be sure that your breath will be taken away by the experience of sailing on the Nile . Africa’s largest river is flanked on both sides by inviting cities; welcoming villages, and secluded islands populated by people who still live in traditional ways. On the other hand, we’ll take you on a leisurely journey among the ruins of ancient Egypt while you unwind and enjoy the onboard experience.

In addition, the Dahabiya boat is mostly propelled by sail, but in the event of no wind; it travels with a tugboat. You may visit a lot of locations that aren’t frequently visited by tourists by taking a Dahabiya on the Nile from Esna; which is one hour’s drive south of Luxor , to Aswan . In fact, you will make stops for sights that are infrequently seen on standard Nile Cruises and get up close to Egyptian villages and daily life.

However, with numerous options available, it’s essential to consider certain factors when selecting the best Dahabiya trip for your needs. This section will highlight the importance of research and planning and key factors to consider when choosing a Dahabiya trip operator.

Research and Planning

Research and planning are vital to ensure a successful and fulfilling Dahabiya trip. Gathering information and evaluating your options will help you make an informed decision, resulting in a memorable and enjoyable experience. Here are a few factors to consider during your research and planning:

1- Trip Duration

Determine how long you want your Dahabiya trip. Some trips last a few days, while others span a week or more. Consider your available time and choose a duration that suits your preference

2- Itinerary

Review the itineraries offered by different Dahabiya trip operators. Look for routes that include the destinations and attractions you wish to visit. Consider whether you prefer a more historical-focused itinerary, a nature-centric route, or a balanced combination.

3- Included Activities

Assess the activities and excursions included in the trip package. Are there any specific experiences or attractions you’re particularly interested in? Ensure that the Dahabiya trip you choose offers opportunities to engage in activities aligned with your interests.

4- Accommodation and Facilities

Evaluate the quality and comfort of the Dahabiya boat’s accommodation and facilities. Look for spacious cabins, well-maintained amenities, and any additional essential features, such as onboard dining options or recreational areas.

Factors to Consider when Selecting a Dahabiya Boats Operator

Dahabiya Boat

Choosing the right Dahabiya Boat operator is as important as selecting the trip. Here are some key factors to consider when evaluating Dahabiya trip operators:

1- Reputation and Experience

Research the reputation and experience of the Dahabiya Boat operator. How long have they been in operation? Do they have a record of providing high-quality trips and exceptional customer service? Look for operators with a solid reputation in the industry.

2- Safety and Licenses

Ensure the Dahabiya Boat operator adheres to strict safety standards and holds the necessary licenses and certifications. This includes having qualified crew members, well-maintained boats, and compliance with local regulations.

3- Expertise and Guides

Assess the expertise of the guides who will accompany you on the trip. Knowledgeable and experienced guides can greatly enhance your experience, providing valuable insights and information about the destinations you visit.

4- Customer Support

Consider the operator’s level of customer support. Are they responsive to inquiries and able to address any concerns or issues that may arise before or during the trip? Excellent customer support can contribute to a smooth and stress-free experience.

Best Time to go on a Dahabiya Nile Cruise tour

Dahabiya Boat

Planning the timing of your Dahabiya trip along the Nile River is crucial to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The climate and weather conditions can greatly impact your journey, so it’s essential to consider the best time to go. This section will explore the ideal seasons for a Dahabiya trip, allowing you to make an informed decision and make the most of your adventure.

1- Winter (November to February)

The winter months, from November to February, are considered the high season for Dahabiya trips. During this time, Egypt experiences cooler temperatures and milder weather, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking to escape the harsh winter in their home countries. The average temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), providing pleasant conditions for exploration.

One of the advantages of visiting during the high season is the reduced risk of extreme heat. Exploring ancient temples and archaeological sites can be more comfortable when the temperatures are not scorching hot. The clear skies and lower humidity levels also create ideal conditions for sightseeing, photography, and enjoying the stunning landscapes along the Nile.

It’s worth noting that the high season attracts more tourists, particularly during major holidays and festivals. Popular sites may be more crowded, and prices for accommodations and tours might be higher. Therefore, if you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider planning your trip during the shoulder seasons.

2- Spring (March to April) and Fall (October to November)

The shoulder seasons of spring (March to April) and fall (October to November) offer a balance between favorable weather conditions and fewer crowds. These periods are considered transitional months, with mild temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).

During the spring, the landscape along the Nile bursts into life with vibrant flowers and blossoming vegetation. It’s a picturesque time to explore the ancient sites and witness the rejuvenation of nature. In the fall, you’ll encounter comfortable temperatures, pleasant breezes, and the bonus of potential discounts on accommodations and tours.

Choosing the shoulder seasons allows you to enjoy a more relaxed experience, with fewer tourists at popular attractions. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the temples and historical sites at your own pace while also taking advantage of experienced guides and ample photo opportunities without large crowds.

3- Summer (May to September)

From May to September, the summer months constitute the low season for Dahabiya trips. Egypt experiences hot and dry weather during this period, with temperatures ranging from 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F) or even higher, particularly in the southern regions. It’s essential to take precautions and be mindful of the intense heat if you decide to travel during the summer.

Despite the high temperatures, the low season presents some advantages for adventurous travelers. The reduced number of tourists means you’ll have a more intimate and tranquil experience at popular sites. Additionally, you may find better deals on accommodations and tours, allowing you to maximize your budget.

If you plan to visit during the low season, staying hydrated, wearing appropriate sun protection, and scheduling activities for the more excellent parts of the day is crucial. Consider seeking shade during the peak heat hours and opting for early morning or late afternoon sightseeing excursions.

What is a Dahabiya?

Dahabiya Boats

The Dahabiya is a type of traditional Egyptian sailboat that was popular in the 19th century. It is a large boat with two or more sails and a flat bottom, which allows it to navigate the Nile even in shallow water.

Dahabiyas were often used by wealthy travelers who wanted to explore Egypt in style. They have deluxe furnishings and amenities like private cabins, dining areas, and lounges. They are also equipped with a team of sailors who will sail the boat and provide services to the passengers.

Today, dahabiyas are still used on Nile cruises, providing a unique and fun way to explore Egypt’s ancient sites and landscapes. They are a more intimate and quiet alternative to the larger, more modern cruise ships that also ply the Nile.

Engage in discussions with Nubian villagers, learning about their unique customs and way of life.

7- Relaxed Pace and Flexibility

The laid-back pace of a Dahabiya boat allows for a truly immersive and enriching experience. Tips for Making the Best Dahabiya Boats Journey

Dahabiya Boat

Embarking on a Dahabiya boat along the Nile River is an exciting adventure that promises unforgettable moments and cherished memories. To help you make the most of your journey, we have compiled a list of valuable tips that will ensure a truly memorable experience. Whether you’re a first-time traveler or a seasoned explorer, these tips will enhance your Dahabiya adventure.

1- Plan and Research

Before setting sail on your Dahabiya trip, take the time to plan and conduct thorough research. Familiarize yourself with the itinerary, destinations, and historical sites you’ll be visiting. This will allow you better to appreciate each location’s rich history and cultural significance. Additionally, research local customs, traditions, and any specific guidelines or dress codes to ensure you show respect and immerse yourself in the local culture.

2- Pack Smart and Light

When packing for your Dahabiya trip, it’s important to pack smart and pack light. Focus on bringing essential items such as comfortable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and a good pair of walking shoes for exploring the ancient sites. It’s also recommended to bring a small daypack for carrying water, snacks, and your camera during excursions. Be mindful of weight restrictions and luggage dimensions, as Dahabiyas have limited storage space in cabins.

3- Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

The Egyptian sun can be intense, especially during the peak summer months. Staying hydrated and protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is crucial. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and carry a reusable water bottle to refill as needed. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF regularly and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun. It’s also advisable to seek shade during the hottest hours of the day and wear lightweight, breathable clothing.

4- The Relaxed Pace

Dahabiya Boat

One of the charms of a Dahabiya trip is its relaxed pace. Embrace this leisurely journey and allow yourself to immerse in the experience fully. Take the time to savor each destination, explore the sites, and converse with fellow travelers and locals. Appreciate the gentle sailing along the Nile, bask in the serene atmosphere, and let the magic of Egypt unfold at its rhythm.

5- Capture the Moments

Remember to capture the magical moments of your Dahabiya trip through photography. Egypt offers countless opportunities for stunning photographs, including iconic temples, serene river landscapes, and vibrant local markets. Be sure to have your camera or smartphone ready to capture the beauty and essence of each location. Remember to ask for permission before taking photos of people, mainly locals, as a sign of respect.

6- Local Cuisine and Culture

Part of the joy of traveling is experiencing the local cuisine and culture. Embrace the opportunity to try authentic Egyptian dishes onboard the Dahabiya and at local restaurants during shore excursions. From traditional mezze platters to aromatic spices and flavorful stews, let your taste buds be delighted by the culinary delights of Egypt. Immerse yourself in the local culture by conversing with locals, learning a few basic Arabic phrases, and respecting local customs and traditions.

7- Be Open to Unexpected Discoveries

While having a general itinerary in mind is essential, be open to unexpected discoveries and serendipitous moments during your Dahabiya trip. Sometimes the most memorable experiences come from unplanned encounters, hidden gems, or local recommendations. Allow yourself to deviate from the beaten path and embrace the journey’s spontaneity. You never know what is extraordinary.
