Historic sites in Road Town include Britannic Hall, Her Majesty’s Prison, Old Government House, Sir Olva Georges Plaza and Virgin Islands Folk Museum.

J.R. O’Neil is a 3-acre park in the middle of Road Town. Mount Healthy features the remains of a thickly walled stone windmill that used to be part of an 18th century sugar plantation. Sage Mountain is the highest point in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands at 1,719 feet and offers expansive views of the area. Shark Bay is a nature preserve and the territory’s first coastal park.

Forts Burt and Recovery are near Road Town. Burt was originally built on a hill overlooking the harbor to defend the town. The foundations and magazines remain of this historic ruin rebuilt in 1776. The site is free and open daily. It is a two-mile walk or drive southwest of town.

Fort Recovery was built in the 1640s as a military gun post. The ruins are intact and are the oldest historical landmark in Tortola. It is a five-mile drive southwest of Road Town. The parks on Tortola include J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, Mount Healthy, Sage Mountain and Shark Bay.

Shore excursions that go to Cane Garden Bay cost about $50 per person including transportation. Posted taxi rates show one way is $24 per person, $12 each for two people and $8 each for three or more people. Rates are subject to change at any time. Always ask for rates before getting into the cab.

Nearby and to the northeast of Cane Garden Bay is Brewer’s Bay Beach. It is known for the ruins of old plantations and distilleries and for snorkeling among the reefs.

Tortola Island's cruise port Road Town is located on Baughers Bay. The island is part of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) - a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, located to the east of Puerto Rico (USA) . The other islands of the Virgin Islands archipelago constitute US Virgin Islands (USVI / aka American Virgin Islands) and the Spanish Virgin Islands ( Culebra and Vieques , both located to the east of Puerto Rico). The archipelago is part of the Leeward Islands (Lesser Antilles). Road Town is located approx 22 mi (35 km) from Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas USVI) .

Tortola Island was named by Christopher Columbus (Italian explorer and colonizer, 1451-1506). The name means "land of the turtle dove”. Tortola BVI attracts cruise tourists with amazing beaches and the fact that Road Town is not so “commercialized” like most of Caribbean cruise ports. The island's official language is English.

On April 29, 2015, was officially opened the expanded Tortola cruise pier. The revamped facility was renovated, widened and lengthened to accommodate larger vessels. The opening ceremony was attended by BVI Government officials and cruise industry representatives. During the event was announced that NCL Norwegian and Disney ships would be bringing around 425,000 cruise tourists to Totrola Island per year, or a 21% increase over 2015.

The new cruise ship facility in Road Town was first used by the NCL ship Norwegian Getaway (berthing here on April 29 / on the pier's opening day). During the Pier's construction works, many cruise ships had to anchor and ferry their passengers via tender boats, which made the port less attractive for travelers. The exclusive agreement with NCL and Disney also caused other cruise lines (including Carnival ) to drop Port Road Town from their Caribbean itineraries leaving roundtrip from the USA.

In 2023, BVIPA (British Virgin Islands Ports Authority) announced a record year with a total of 720392 cruise tourists, or 3% increase over the previous record year 2016 (699105 cruisers). In 2023, In 2023, BVI handled a total of 354 cruise ship calls, of which 232x at Tortola Cruise Ship Pier and the remaining 122x were ships handled at anchorage sites across the BVI (9x at Road Harbour/Tortola, 56x off Jost Van Dyke Island , 38x off Virgin Gorda Island , and 19x other).

Cruise ships to Tortola Island dock (anchor) at Road Town - port town on the central-southern coast. The port and its facilities are operated by BVI Port Authority. The city's business distict is within easy walking distance from the port.

Smaller-sized luxury ships and superyachts often use for berthing or tendering the Soper's Hole Marina (West Edn Tortola).

Until 2015, Road Town port didn't have dedicated cruise terminal building.

With the new pier, Tortola cruise port has berthing capacity of two large-sized vessels at a time. If there are more than 2 vessels, one of them anchors in the bay and its passengers are tendered ashore to the Road Town Jetty. It is closer to downtown than the cruise pier.

Before the new pier project, at the end of the cruise pier was located a shelter where passengers were gathered before shore excursions/tours. The new termonal has a dedicated parking area. Local taxi service includes minivans and safari cabs. There is a taxi rank at the pier (close to Wickham's Cay or Soper's Hole).

A BVI license is needed for car rentals. The license is easily obtainable with a valid US driver’s license and costs USD 10. Be aware to drive on the road's left side!

Tourists willing to visit other British Virgin Islands from Tortola, there is a regularly scheduled ferry service. The island has two ferry terminals – at the west end (Soper's Hole) and at the east end (Beef Island). Regular ferry services are offered between Tortola and Cruz Bay (St John Island USVI) .

Tortola Pier Park

The cruise port development project resulted in building a new cruise terminal building.

In 2014 started the construction works on the port's new cruise ship dedicated complex "Tortola Pier Park". The new docking pier was completed by December 2014. Its construction included a total of 123 piles that were driven into the seabed to support the above structure (retail buildings).

The expanded cruise pier has total length 1039 ft (317 m) and width 60 ft (18 m). Additional 273 ft (83 m) docking space is provided by mooring dolphins, giving a total berthing space 1312 ft (400 m). The pier's capacity is 2 ships at a time (each vessel up to 180,000 GT tons).

Dredging started in November. It was required to lower the seabed to 37,5 ft (11,5 m) allowing such max draft for docking cruise vessels. The project's scheduled completion of the pier was April 2015, with the entire "Tortola Pier Park" complex to be inaugurated in summer 2015.

The "Tortola Pier Park" building cost is around USD 75 million. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and Disney Cruise Line were the projects main investors. Of the whole budget, USD 25 million was for the new pier and new excursion docks, Another USD 25 million were for the waterfront land development (area adjacent to the cruise pier). The BVI Government leased the land for a period of 48 years (with buy-out option at 15 and 30 years). The Tortola Pier Park design was developed by the US company IDEA (Orlando FL-based). This is a leading cruise port designer company that specializes in marine and waterfront port developments.

A separate concrete slab was built to support the flagship restaurant (part of Pier Park). The entire park includes 17 buildings, among which the cruise terminal, passenger welcome center, 2 restaurants, 1 pier bar, 1 shopping market, 1 chapel, 1 boat museum, 18 tourist kiosks. The park's 2 main buildings are sized each approx 8000 ft2 (750 m2).

The construction plan was to transform Road Town's waterfront into a marketplace with festive events and tourist attractions. The waterfront development included building a new shopping village (with trolly cars for cruise passengers to explore it) plus a Ferris Wheel.

On February 16, 2016, was inaugurated Tortola Pier Park. Prior to its construction, British Virgin Islands received around 370,000 cruise passengers annually. For the 1 year period since the park's opening, BVI received almost 700,000 passengers. The new terminal's statistics for that period showed 11 maiden ship calls.

For the summer 2017, Tortola Pier Park planned special cruise terminal events, featuring live concerts and fun family activities.

Willie T’s Floating Bar&Restaurant: the original wooden restaurant sank in 1995. This is the second one dating from 1996. You can enjoy nice cuisine and great party onboard. The restaurant leaves the Nanny Cay Marina at 5PM and returns usually at 11PM.

Good To Know

The climate on Tortola is tropical and hot throughout the year. May to October are the hotter months with an average of 82°F. From December to March, the temperatures range from 75°F to 77°F and tend to be more pleasant. January to April are relatively dry and May to December sees the most precipitation. The sea is warm enough to swim all year round and the sun shines pretty much every day.

U.S. currency is used in the British Virgin Islands. There are ATMs in Tortola Pier Park.

The language is British English, and there is also a local dialect. Spanish is also spoken by some of the islanders.

Where You Dock in Tortola – British Virgin Islands

Cruise ships dock at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park in Road Town. The pier can handle two ships at a time. Built in a colonial style, the cruise and shopping center is located in Road Town.

This outdoor shopping mall has over 70 retail outlets, restaurants, and service centers, with shops open from 9am-6pm and restaurants open from 7am to midnight.

Wi-Fi, ATMs and washrooms are available here as well as car rentals.

Tortola Pier Park is quite wheelchair accessible with flat sidewalks and curb cut-outs, but sidewalks made up of interlocking brick or stone could make for a bumpier ride.

Getting Around Tortola – British Virgin Islands

You will be able to walk from the pier to the cruise facility in Road Town. If you just want to shop or browse, then Tortola Pier Park will have shops, restrooms, and eateries.

Water Ferries

Going between islands is done by water ferries. They operate on a schedule, and information can be found in the Pier Park. You can catch a ferry at Road Town, Soper’s Hole and Beef Island. To get to Soper’s Hole or Beef Island, you will need a cab.

There are taxi stands at the Pier Park, Soper’s Hole or Wickham’s Cay. Safari cabs and mini vans are the typical mode of taxis. Avoid a safari cab if you are nervous on steep, winding roads, as there are so many of them on Tortola.

Rental Cars

If you choose to rent a car in Tortola, you will need to purchase a British Virgin Islands temporary license. You will need a vaild driver’s license to do so, and the BVI license is about $10. It is good for no more than three months. You do not have to take a written or road skills test but do remember that driving is on the left side of the road in BVI.

The roads on Tortola can be bumpy, and a bit treacherous. There are steep roads into the mountains and blind turns, along with the usual potholes. The occasional cow, goat or chicken will also share the roadway with you.

When in Tortola, there are a few things that you might want to look for:

Spices: Tortola is known for the wonderful spices that it produces. Because of the climate, growing spices has been a major source of trade for the island.

Local Rum: Most islands in the Caribbean make their own rum and Tortola is no exception.

Pottery: Local artists create one-of-a-kind pottery in Tortola. It is nice to know that the pottery here is made on the Island, not imported for tourists.

Jams and Jellies: These condiments are made from the fruits grown on the island and are something you won’t find in the grocery store at home.

Clothing: The island flair is recreated in Batik-designed dresses and shirts. If you are wanting just the regular vacation t-shirt, you can get one customized in some of the shops in Tortola.

Located in Trellis Bay on Beef Island, beside the airport, this studio showcases some of the most talented artisans on the island. They have copper sculptures, island prints, pottery and jewelry.

In Road Town on Main Street, the building that Sunny’s occupies was once the first hotel on Tortola. Here you will find Caribbean spices, teas, condiments, and handicrafts. They also have a selection of cosmetics, bath gels, perfumes, and sunscreens.

Pusser’s Company Store

Located a 10 minute walk from the dock, Pusser’s Company Store offers gourmet food items like meat, spices and fish along with Pusser’s Rum, one of their best selling items. A must try at their onsite restaurant is the “Painkiller” – a drink made with their own rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut and orange juice. Sounds like the tropics in a glass! In addition to they offer nautical and tropical clothing, mugs and bags.

British Virgin Islands Post Office

If you, or someone you know, is into collecting stamps, philatelists from all over the world value the stamps from the BVI. The British Virgin Island post office on Main Street in Road Town sees many international visitors come to purchase the stamps with unusual and beautiful designs. While most philatelists don’t use the stamps they collect on pieces of mail, know that although the stamps carry U.S. monetary designations, they can only be used in the BVI.

One of the favorite dishes in Tortola is fungi. Similar to polenta, fungi is made with cornmeal and okra. Another favorite is roti, which is a flatbread that is deep fried. It can also be stuffed with lentils, curry or vegetables.

Located about a 10 minute walk from the cruise pier, this will be your spot for fine dining on Tortola. They serve contemporary international haute cuisine, craft cocktails and fine wines. Upstairs at The Dove is the Dragonfly Lounge where you can enjoy a cocktail in a stylish old-world environment.

Brandywine Estate Restaurant

Enjoy superb Mediterranean cuisine while enjoying beautiful beach views of Brandywine Bay. Located off the beaten path, 7.5 kms east of the cruise port, you will find tapas and bistro options for a leisurely lunch, or mains such as filet mignon or seafood for dinner. Menus change often, with daily specials, and is open Wednesday through Sunday.

D’CoalPot BVI Restaurant Bar & Grill

Located about a 20 minute drive from the cruise port, on the north-west shore of the island, fresh fish, lobster and conch along with Caribbean spiced dishes will give you plenty to choose from. You will find the popular roti and jerk pork along with key lime pie for dessert. It’s best to call ahead to make sure they’re open as their hours can vary.

Things To Do in Tortola – British Virgin Islands

In the center of Road Town, this botanical garden has collections from the different habitats on the British Virgin Islands. There are exotic species from the rainforest type environments on the mountains, coastal environments, the dry forest and an extensive collection of palms. A gazebo of orchids and a nursery for endangered species of flora are within this three acre park.

Sage Mountain National Park

The highest point on Tortola, Sage Mountain stands at 1,716 feet. While a trip here is probably not on anyone’s bucket list, it is a good way to spend a pleasant afternoon. There are about 12 looped, winding trails and excellent views of some of the other islands. Plan on spending about two hours and wear sturdy shoes along with sunscreen.

While many people associate B.V.I with beaches, there aren’t any within walking distance of the cruise terminal. Most are located along the north shore and are about a 20 minute drive from the cruise terminal.

Cane Garden Bay Beach is on Tortola’s north shore, and it is about 20 minutes from the pier in Road Town. This is a popular beach for families because of the clear and calm waters. There are areas where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and jet skis. The sands are pure white and beautiful. There are also spots for food and beverage at this beach.

Apple Bay is a favorite for surfers, especially in January and February. This small beach can get crowded if the surf is good.

Most cruise ships calling at Tortola dock at the Cruise Pier in Road Town. The pier is big enough to handle two large cruise ships simultaneously. Road Town, the Capital of the British Virgin Islands, surrounds the harbor like an amphitheater, its buildings stretching up into the hillsides in search of scarce land. The spacious, beautiful harbor at Road Town is a busy center of island life and marine activity in this tropical archipelago. Businesses, government, restaurants, hotels, charter boats, cruise ships, shops--all are here in Road Town. Beneath its placid tropical exterior, Road Town is very much an international city, at the crossroads of a continuing Caribbean maritime culture of upscale tourism and offshore finance.

About 80% of the BVIs’ 23,500 citizens live and work on Tortola.

In the heart of Main St, the stark whiterubble walls of HM Prison date back to the 18th century. The fortress is still a working jail.

Another way to see the island is to organize a readily available taxi 'tour'. Taxis are abundant on Tortola, and so long as you use a legitimate taxi association driver prices will generally allow you to travel anywhere you wish but for less than the cost of renting a car. Always ensure that you thoroughly confirm the fare charge before you get into the taxi.

Secluded palm-shaded beaches at Apple Bay, Brewer's Bay, Elizabeth Beach, Josiah's Bay Beach, Long Bay Beach and Smuggler's Cove make for excellent swimming and snorkeling. There are also many well-equipped facilities for fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving and more.

Nearby Places:

Plenty of ferries are near the cruise dock, making it easy to visit the other "Virgins". i.e The Baths on Virgin Gorda , also part of the British Virgin Islands. Trip takes about 25 minutes.

A long and lovely curved bay that’s sheltered from heavy winds, Cane Garden Bay on Tortola’s north shore is a favored anchorage for boaters. Swimming, windsurfing and other water sports attract tourists and BVI residents alike, who also enjoy the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach.

Shopping and Food

Cruise ship visitors, who want to stretch their "shopping" legs on land, can browse on the cay at the shops on Wickham's Cay.

Tortola Transportation

The capital island in the British Virgin Island chain, Tortola has pristine beaches, bougainvillea covered cottages and a thriving economy. It takes a little longer to arrive but worth the extra time.

Getting to Tortola:

There is no direct air service to the airport in Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands. Connections can be made from San Juan, St. Thomas, Antigua and St. Maarten with frequent daily flights.

Ferries from St. Thomas leave several times a day. The ride takes 50 minutes and is direct to the port in Road Town. It’s quite spectacular scenery on the ride.

Tortola is a very popular stop on many cruise ship routes. Tourism makes up 45% of the economy in the BVI, and holiday cruise travelers make up a large part of it.

The port at Road Town also has berths for private sail boats and yachts.

Discovering Tortola

While there are car rentals on the Island, there really is no reason to have one. Tortola is only 21.5 square miles and taxis are abundant and inexpensive. There are two types of taxis available. A colorful open air safari taxi is the most common type. They have posted pricing but confirm your destination and cost before you get on. It’s also a great way to interact with locals. Private taxis are metered and have rate cards so there is no confusion prior to boarding.

A very common way to get around in Tortola is scooter or bike rentals. The roads around the island are good though the interior is more mountainous. It’s always fun to find a deserted beach or look for a local cook out.

There are water taxis available to discover the other islands, there are about sixty but most are unoccupied. There is daily scheduled service to Virgin Gorda and Peter Island from Road Town.

Should I fly in early for my cruise? The pros and cons of arriving ahead of time

Imagine it's embarkation day for your long-awaited cruise vacation, but your same-day flight gets delayed. Your new arrival time means you might not get to your ship before check-in closes. Or, imagine you wake up to a snowstorm and unplowed streets, and you can't get to the airport. Or maybe your car breaks down on the way, and you miss your flight.

In all of these scenarios, you've left yourself mere hours to fly from your home city to your cruise port. An unexpected delay means your voyage hangs in the balance.

As experienced cruisers know, one of the best ways to avoid potential embarkation day travel headaches is to fly in at least a day before your ship's departure.

Flying in early is generally a smart idea, but consider these pros and cons before you decide when to arrive for your cruise if you're traveling by plane.

Pros of flying in early for your cruise

You'll have time to rebook if there are delays.

You know how the stereotypical dad arrives at the airport five hours before any flight? Flying to your cruise departure city early is the same concept but on a larger scale.

If you plan to arrive the day before your cruise and your flight is delayed or canceled — or you run into another snag that prevents you from being on the plane as scheduled — you'll be able to make alternative travel plans and arrive in port before your ship sets sail. Knowing you have time to develop a Plan B will allow you to keep some travel stress at bay.

You'll have time to explore your port city

One of my least favorite things about cruising is the limited amount of time most ships provide in port. If you fly in a day early for your voyage, you'll have a chance to explore your city of embarkation before your ship departs.

Plan to check out a local restaurant or two, visit a museum or take in the sights. One day is sufficient, but if you have the time, consider a two- or three-day pre-cruise stay to enhance your vacation and really explore the area.

You can rest and start adjusting to any time changes

If running around taking in the local attractions the day before your cruise sounds more exhausting than fun, you can also use the time to do the opposite: relax. Check into your hotel, have a leisurely meal and rest up before boarding the following day.

This is also a great way to jump-start your body's adjustment to any time changes you might encounter if you're flying farther afield to meet your ship.

Cons of flying in early for your cruise

You'll have more logistics to plan.

If you're flying in the day before you embark, you'll need a place to stay. That means more vacation planning. Is it better to stay closer to the port or local attractions? Does the property you've chosen offer perks like free breakfast or Wi-Fi? What is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel? Which attractions are best to visit, and do you need a car to get to them?

You'll also need to find your way to the port on the day your ship leaves. If your hotel doesn't have a shuttle, you'll need to research taxis, ride-hailing services or other public transportation options.

A longer trip will cost more

If you're on a strict budget, the extra costs involved with a pre-cruise hotel stay might not be affordable or worth it. Are you giving up a shore excursion in a port of call in order to fund meals and accommodations prior to your sailing?

You'll want to research not only hotel prices but also costs for meals, sightseeing and transfers between the airport, hotel and cruise port. Then, you can decide whether you want to fly in a day early. Look to points and miles that might help you score a pre-cruise hotel room for free or at a discounted rate, or look to redeem award nights for your stay.

Bottom line

Arriving early for a cruise has its pros and cons. However, the reasons to arrive at least a day ahead of time far outweigh reasons not to — especially if a pre-cruise hotel stay is within your budget.

Making your way into town a day or more in advance will provide you with additional peace of mind, a chance to explore and an opportunity to rest up for embarkation day.

If you can't afford a pre-cruise stay or don't have time to fly in the day before you sail, I recommend booking the earliest flight possible on embarkation day. This way, you'll have time to hop on another one if your travel plans go awry.

Brewer's Bay - Can I get a Taxi?

My husband is concerned that it will be difficult to get a taxi back to the port from Brewer's Bay and we may risk missing the ship if we go here. Can anyone who has visited Brewer's Bay tell me if you had trouble finding a ride back to the ship?

A woman who won a free Virgin Voyages cruise said she would have to spend $8,000 on flights to claim the prize

An Australian woman who won a cruise said she would have to pay thousands of dollars to redeem it.
Her Virgin Voyages cruise was canceled due to Red Sea tensions, forcing her to rebook.
The cruise line offered Europe or Caribbean trips, but she said flights were too expensive.

An Australian woman who won a Virgin Voyages cruise said she and her partner would have to pay a combined $8,000 for flights due to a change in the ship's itinerary.

The woman, who spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) under the pseudonym Morgan, said the flights to the cruise ports are more expensive than the value of the adults-only cruise .

Morgan said she was traveling on a Virgin Airlines flight from Melbourne to her home in Tasmania in November when the passengers on board were told they had won a cruise.

In a video shared to Virgin Voyages' Instagram account in November, a flight attendant FaceTimed with Virgin founder Richard Branson to announce the prize.

"I am pleased to gift each adult on board a free Virgin Voyages cruise," Branson said.

The video showed passengers excitedly cheering as flight attendants handed out cruise vouchers.

It is not known if this video is from the same flight that Morgan was on.

Morgan's voucher was for a twin-share cruise out of Australia or New Zealand on the cruise line's newest ship, Resilient Lady , which debuted in May 2023, as shown in a photo of the voucher published by ABC.

Morgan said she was initially "thrilled" as she and her partner used the twin-share voucher to book a cruise out of Brisbane. However, in February, the cruise line announced its upcoming Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea, according to ABC and The Independent .

As a result, Morgan was told her only option was to redeem her voucher for a Europe or Caribbean voyage — which could cost thousands in flights.

Virgin Voyages has various Caribbean itineraries sailing out of San Juan and Miami, with ports in Tortola, Basseterre, St. John's, Fort-de-France, Castries, Kingstown, and Philipsburg.

The cruise line's brand could be at risk, says marketing expert

"We apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea," a spokesperson for Virgin Australia Group said in a statement obtained by BI.

They added that "safety is always our number-one priority" and that Virgin Voyages had offered all impacted guests complimentary cruises on its other international sailings.

Balkrushna Potdar, a marketing lecturer at the University of Tasmania, told ABC that Morgan's story could potentially damage Virgin Voyages' brand. The company could gain a reputation for using untrustworthy marketing tactics, Potdar said.

Potdar said the company could make things right by "covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean."

Virgin Voyages has been widely celebrated for its child-free cruises, which cater to millennial travelers . The company's first ship, Scarlet Lady, set sail in 2021 after being delayed due to the pandemic.

In September 2023, Virgin Voyages announced it had secured $550 million in funding managed by the Private Equity Group of Ares Management.

The funding will be used to enable the cruise line to support the brand's "rapid expansion into international markets, with a relentless focus on creating an outstanding and innovative customer experience," according to a press release.

St John’s Antigua Cruise Port: Everything you need to know

M y name is Sara and I’ve spent the last 3 winters living in Antigua with my family. We come each year as my boyfriend is a yacht captain and the boat he works on is based in Antigua. We’ve joined in with the local community, especially as our sons go to school on the island.

I’ve also worked on cruise ships as I used to manage the spa outlets on all of the P&O and Cunard cruise ships. So I know how exciting a port day can be!

I’ve gathered my insider tips and knowledge for a day in Antigua.

Where is St John’s Cruise Port Antigua Located?

The cruise port is located in Deepwater Harbour which is in St John’s. St John’s is the capital of Antigua. It’s right in the town and you can walk there very easily.

How to Get to the City of St John’s from the Cruise Port

It’s very easy to walk to St John’s from the cruise port as the ships dock in the town itself. Once you disembark the cruise ship and leave the terminal you are in the town. You’ll be by Heritage Quay which is the main shopping area.

Are there Free Shuttles from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

There are no free shuttles as there is no need for them as you can walk there.

Can you walk into St John’s from your cruise ship?

Yes, as the town is at the end of the cruise ship terminal. You will walk to St John’s to be able to take any tours or taxis to leave the cruise port.

Are there taxis available from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

Yes, there are a lot of taxis in St John’s Antigua that will be waiting to take you to explore the island. You’ll find them generally on Heritage Quay which is at the end of the ship dock.

✅ You should confirm the price of your taxi before you leave St John’s. Also, depending on where you go, you might want to ask the taxi to wait.

There is no Uber on the island and getting a taxi outside of the main tourist attractions can be tricky. Most people tend to book their drive for the day and ask them to wait as they visit different locations on the island.

There are three ways to explore Antigua.

You can hire a taxi for the day following your own itinerary and their recommendations.
Rent a car and drive yourself. This will give you a lot more flexibility and will be better value than hiring a taxi all day.
Take a shore excursion and there are plenty to choose from.

Things to do in Antigua

Walking tour of st john’s.

This is ideal if you want a more relaxed port day and don’t want to travel too far. St John’s is small, however, there’s enough to see and do to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

If you’re keen on the history of the town then you can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, walk to the Cathedral, and then take in Old Recreation which is the old cricket ground.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, there is Heritage Quay for jewelry and tax-free shopping. Or Redcliffe Quay for more local clothing and art. You’ll also find in both quays a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy and people-watch from.

Take a Cooking Class

If you’re into the tastes of the Caribbean, then why not take a cooking class? Nicole’s Table is the best in Antigua and she offers a variety of different classes. She covers cooking with jerk flavors, making local curries, and dishes from the sea, and cooking with rum.

Visit Stingray City

This is one of my must-do things in Antigua – swimming and feeding the stingrays .

Antigua is one of the only places in the world where you can swim and interact with stingrays. ( You can visit them in Grand Cayman too !) Whenever friends and family come to visit it’s the number one experience that I encourage them to try.

During the tour, you are taken out to a remote pontoon on the edge of a reef where the stingrays congregate for feeding. Your guides will help you into the water and encourage you to snorkel around them.

You’ll also have an opportunity to feed them and to carefully hold one in the water. They also have a professional photographer at hand to capture the moment for you. so you’ll get a great photo of you with a stingray!

Snorkeling or Scuba Diving Tour

Antigua is a fantastic place to visit if you want to see turtles, rays, and much more.

If you’re a snorkeler the easiest way to get to see them from the cruise port is to take a boat tour. Most of the good spots on the island require a boat to reach them.

There are lots of different tours to choose from. I’d particularly recommend Eli’s Eco Tour as you get to spend a good amount of time at some great locations in the north of Antigua near the cruise port.

For those of you who scuba dive , there are several dive centers on the island to choose from that can also offer courses.

Nelson’s Dockyard

If local history interests you then the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard is fantastic. It’s a restored British naval base, and yes, it’s where Nelson was based for a time.

It’s an open-air museum so very interactive and great for all ages, plus an actual museum space as well. Plenty of tour companies run from the cruise port to Nelson’s Dockyard, or you can drive yourself and follow the sign inside.

There’s also plenty of space to stretch your legs or let little ones run loose. And lots to see it’s still an active marina today, you can also watch yachts and their crew come and go. You can even walk up to the old fort and get an incredible view back over the marina.

Rum Making Masterclass at Galleon Beach

If you’re looking for something a little different, and want to combine snorkeling at a beach, with one of the best restaurants on the island and some rum tasting then this is the day out for you.

Galleon Bay is located in the south of the island and whilst it’s got a very chilled-out vibe, it’s got a lot to keep you busy for the day. There’s fantastic snorkelling at a couple of wrecks which are located just off of the beach and you’ve got a good chance of seeing turtles!

In the middle of the beach is Loose Cannon Bar and Restaurant , which serves some of the best beach food on the island – we eat there a lot, and so I’ve tasted most of the delicious menu. As well as this, there’s a rum-making masterclass workshop behind the restaurant where you can blend your own rum!

A fun, and alternative way to spend a day!

If you enjoy a bit of an adrenaline rush whilst you’re away, and are happy to fly through the air on a zipline , then this is the activity for you. Located in a tropical rainforest , it’s not only fun but beautiful too.

They have a variety of different packages that you can choose from depending on how many zip lines you want to ride and if you want to add on the high-wire assault course at the end.

It operates in a tou r with set times so you complete the zip lines in a group. The guides are very knowledgeable and make sure that you are comfortable so it’s suitable for total beginners and those scared of heights (like me!). Plus they take children from 4 years old upwards so it’s fun for families too!

Explore A Beach Or Two

Antigua has over 365 stunning beaches to choose from , so you’ll be sure to find a beach to suit your needs.

One of the easiest ways to explore the beaches is on a land tour where they’ll take you a few different ones in a day.

Getting From The Airport To The Cruise Port

The closest airport to the cruise port is VC Bird International Airport which is 8.3km away. The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi. There is public transport, however, it’s not direct and so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Places To Stay Near St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

Antigua is renowned for it’s amazing all-inclusive resorts, so you’ll find lots of them to choose from, ones that are adults only, some that suit families, and even ones that cater to nudists.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near St John’s, then these three are three places come highly recommended:

Royalton Antigua – just 4km from the cruise port, this family-friendly all-inclusive resort is extra special as they have wonderful sea villas that you can choose from and butler service.

Sandals Antigua – only 5km from the cruise port, this adult-only resort on the beach on Dickenson Bay, right in the middle of the action. I’ve recently had friends who stayed there and said that they would highly recommend it.

Blue Waters Resort – slightly further away than the other two at 8.5km, this family-friendly luxury all-inclusive resort to the north of St John’s is well worth a visit. We’ve been there ourselves on day passes to use the facilities and it’s a brilliant resort. It’s got some great sailing equipment, a few different pools to choose from, and delicious food.

Antigua Quick Facts

English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda. They also speak Antiguan Creole which is an English-based Creole language spoken widely in the Leeward Islands which includes Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and Montserrat.
The currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) more locally called “EC”. You’ll find that most things will be priced in EC, and higher-priced items such as tours and accommodation will also be advertised in US dollars.

Antigua is a popular country on the Caribbean cruising routes, and you’ll find up to 5 ships in the cruise port at any one time.

The benefit of this is that there are lots of different tours that you can take from St John’s, and many taxi drivers are ready to haggle for a day price to drive you around the island.

If you’re not looking to travel far, then you can relax in St John’s as the cruise port is conveniently located on the edge of the town. You can easily walk to the town to take in some Antiguan history, shopping, and tasty food and drinks.

If beaches are more your thing, then the nearest is about an hour’s walk from the cruise port at St James Fort. However, there are plenty of tour operators happy to take you to explore the other beaches.
