If you were to quickly name the top five things Michael Jordan loved more than anything, what would make the list?

Basketball; winning; his mom; golf; gambling; cigars — any combination of those probably covers it.

But one thing that slips under the radar on MJ’s list of passions is motorsports.

This might not come as such a huge surprise in 2021, given His Airness now owns a NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace and Denny Hamlin at the wheel, but racing has always been one of Jordan’s interests.

According to the official Jordan Brand blog, MJ even agreed to stop riding motorcycles when he signed his first NBA contract , such was his love for the sport.

His NASCAR team isn’t his first foray into ownership: between 2004 and 2014, the iconic Jumpman logo was plastered on the racing bikes of riders on Team Jordan.

Automotive inspiration runs deep in the Jordan sneaker line, too. We all remember the Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Motorsport’ release from 2017, but did you know the famed “Thunder and Lightning” pack from 2006 was also a tribute to Team Jordan racing?

The “Lightning” colorway — an Air Jordan 4 retro heavy on the yellow — is now considered a grail for many, given it hasn’t been seen since. Well, not until now anyway.

The Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Tour Yellow,’ dropping on 8/28, brings back that long-awaited bright lightning-esque shade after a decade and a half of waiting.

Dressed in full-grain nubuck leather, the ‘Tour Yellow’ is the second release we’ve seen this month with a bright yellow look.

The 2021 cousin of the “Lightning” pair features black tooling, a white midsole and Dark Blue Grey accents to complete the picture.

Released in 1989, the Air Jordan 4 debuted in four original colorways. It was Tinker Hatfield’s second Air Jordan design, his sophomore effort after roping Mike back into favor with Nike thanks to his exotic design of the Air Jordan 3. To this day, it remains one of the most revered Air Jordan retro models in the brand’s arsenal, and arguably the most favored Tinker designs amongst sneakerheads.

The design received its first-ever retro run in 1999, with the second coming seeing both the original Black and White Cement colorways release alongside the new Retro+ concept that introduced non-OG colorways to the model, as well as some aesthetic changes to the design.

In the years since, the silhouette has become a favorite for collaborators, with the likes of Eminem, Travis Scott, KAWS, and Levi’s all linking up on the silhouette. Its mainline releases are often amongst the most desirable of the year, too, putting the Air Jordan 4 towards the top of most people’s lists. The last lap of any race should feature an all-out sprint or pedals to the floor. In more ways than one, that describes the expectation at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

A full field of 156 is ready to go at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. For what’s at stake, how the course will test in its fourth year as the host and more can be found beneath the ranking of those projected to contend for the title.

Of course, winning opens the most doors, but the lunge for the latest tape will require a scorer’s mentality throughout the tournament.

After its first two editions as one of the easiest par 72s on the schedule, TPC Craig Ranch transitioned into one of the easiest par 71s last year when the 12th hole was shortened and modified to a par 4. While it evolved from the easiest hole on the course in 2022 to the second-hardest in relation to par a year later, it still didn’t register as among the toughest 20 percent of par 4s played all season. Overall, the field averaged 68.913 on the 7,414-yard test.

As is the case with every shootout, leading the field in scoring opportunities isn’t enough. The putts need to drop as well. TPC Craig Ranch sets a stage for guys to find a groove and ride it across multiple rounds. Decent-sized putting surfaces blanketed with bentgrass are governed to just 11 ½ feet on the Stimpmeter – they need to prepare to withstand quintessential Texas wind – so flagsticks will be in crosshairs more than usual.

Breezes do a fair job of inflating measurements from holes on approach, but the ground game at TPC Craig Ranch is rewarded. Last year, the field’s average in salvaging pars from off greens nearly two-thirds of the time, ranking second-easiest among 58 courses played.

Storms are almost as guaranteed as the wind this week. There’s a reasonable threat during every round. Because the invisible force will flex at times, native Texans always have an edge because they find the strongest pulse. Daytime highs might not touch 80 degrees, so these will not be sweltering conditions. (Wednesday’s Golfbet Insider will include a revisit of the weather.)

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson sleeper picks and long shots

T he PGA Tour regular season trudges on, and after a fun weekend at the Zurich Classic, a more traditional tournament returns this weekend for The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.

TPC Craig Ranch hosts this week for the fourth straight year and is a par-71 with Bentgrass greens. The course has historically been low-scoring and birdie-friendly for bombers who can take advantage of their length with accurate approach shots.

The course features some drivable par-4s, which makes length off the tee a premium skill here. While the last few weeks have yielded mostly chalky winners, that means we are due for some chaos this weekend on the PGA Tour, especially without any golfers shorter than 14-1 to win outright.

Jake Knapp 110-1 ( bet365 )

Jake Knapp burst onto the scene earlier this season with a win at the Mexico Open at Vidanta among a flurry of top-five finishes. He cracked the top five at the Farmers Insurance Open, Mexico Open and the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches all in a two-month span.

The rookie has cooled off a bit since, but he hasn’t been disastrous. He has only missed two cuts in 11 events this season, including back-to-back made cuts at the Masters and the RBC Heritage coming into this week.

When you’re looking for a longshot, you are looking for upside, and Knapp has that in spades. You won’t find many golfers priced at 110-1 or higher this week or any week on the PGA Tour that have a ceiling as high as Knapp’s during his two-month hot stretch earlier this season.

Knapp’s biggest strengths map well with the course here as well. Knapp ranks 18th on Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

The UCLA Bruin is also a great driver of the ball. He is 18th overall in Total Driving, 27th in Driving Distance and 83rd in Driving Accuracy. With a course that rewards long hitters with some advantages on drivable par-4s, Knapp will have a chance to strut his stuff here.

Ryan Palmer 110-1 ( DraftKings )

Next we move to a golfer with a history of success at the Byron Nelson as Ryan Palmer simply loves it here.

In his last two appearances at this event, Palmer finished eighth in 2023 and fifth in 2022. Of all the golfers in the field this week, Palmer is ranked second overall in Total Strokes Gained at TPC Craig Ranch in his career.

He only trails K.H. Lee, who won the event twice in a row in 2021 and 2022 at TPC Craig Ranch, which first hosted this event in 2021.

Palmer has performed better on average at this course than many of the betting favorites, including Jordan Spieth (+1400), Jason Day (+1800) and Adam Scott (+2500). At 110-1, given Palmer’s success here, he is grossly undervalued this weekend.

Palmer is also coming off of his best finish of the season last week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he finished T19. After starting the season by missing the cut in three of his first four starts, Palmer has rounded into form making the cut in four of his last five events heading into the Byron Nelson.

The 47-year-old is also a sneakily elite driver as well, ranking 12th on the PGA Tour in Total Driving, 30th in Driving Accuracy and 35th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. If he drives the ball well this week, this is one of the best value bets on the board.

Joel Dahmen 175-1 ( bet365 )

Our final longshot is a familiar name to golf fans around the world (and Netflix watchers).

Joel Dahmen has had an up-and-down season, and really an up-and-down career. His story has been well-documented, as he approaches golf much more lightheartedly than most professionals on Tour.

However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the stuff to win on any given week. His talent is much closer to the top 30 in the world than his results have shown. As the season progresses, the pressure will mount to post some quality results or risk falling off the Tour altogether, as he's currently 107th in the FedExCup Standings.

Despite Dahmen’s inconsistency, he tied for 11th at THE PLAYERS Championship and is coming off a T28 finish last week at the Zurich Classic.

Dahmen is appealing this week for a few reasons.

First, he feels due. In a field that lacks star power while many of the biggest names rest up to play in a PGA Tour signature event at Quail Hollow and a major championship at Valhalla in the next two weeks, Dahmen is suddenly one of the most talented players in the field this weekend.

Second, Dahmen has been fantastic off the tee this season (despite being shorter than average) and as usual has excelled with his approach shots. He ranks 24th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee this season and 14th in Strokes Gained: Approach to Green. He is second in the entire PGA Tour in Proximity, and that should help him on a birdie-friendly course.

At 175-1, Dahmen is simply a much better golfer than anyone else at this valuation. It’s time for him to back that up.
