Easy to use, love the trips feature!

Found out about TB after I saw them as app of the day. Have been using for several weeks now and am a huge fan - was previously using Expensify, but switched all my employees over. Love not having to pay a monthly fee per user, and there is no trade off in functionality. Tried the bookings feature after I got a promo offer and I love that they have Southwest, I haven’t seen that in a travel app before. Well worth trying, after all, it’s free!

Developer Response ,

So glad you found us through App of the Day, and happy to hear you're having a good experience. We'd love any and all additional feedback you may have, so feel free to send it to over to [email protected].

Issue with reports

I have used this application for nine(9) expense reports. Initially there was a problem with reading the title and/or amount. I captured all the information for the tenth report then generated the report. It did not email the report as before. That was no notification of and error. I tried to generate a report as PDF file. It would run then error message process was taking too long. I tried to share the report. That process seems I generate a PDF before sending. So, my report is hung-up at TravelBank. It’s been over two weeks now without a solution or an expected date for a solution. I will not trust this application with financial data or processing.
We're sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. We've discovered that this particular issue with generating a PDF affected a small group of users on a trial version of our product, and has already been fixed. Our support team would be happy to help you if you need assistance in the future.

Pretty good app

Love the modern design. The app is pretty fast with slick interactions. Booking a flight is good experience with the animations and additional tags. It also gives the estimated average budget so you know you are not overspending. Love the way how the plane takes off during search, haha. I also like how it creates the pdf of all my receipts. No copy pasting, just snap a picture of the receipts and it generates the pdf. I also sync my credit cards so I get all the transactions in one place.
We put a lot of thought and emphasis into presenting a clean, modern, simple experience that is a departure from other clunkier, more enterprise-feeling tools in our space, so we're glad to hear you're enjoying it! We'd love any and all additional feedback you may have, so feel free to send it to over to [email protected].

The ULTIMATE Guide to Travel Banking for 2024

When I returned from my first backpacking trip in South America, I was flat broke. When I went through my bank statements from the 6 months I had spent traveling, I saw that I had racked up over £300 in banking fees simply for withdrawing cash and using my card!!! At the time, that £300 would have come in very handy but instead it was inflating the profit margins at HSBC. I learned a very valuable lesson that day…

If you are traveling the world on a budget, the last thing you need is hefty ATM and conversion fees from your local bank. This is where clever travel banking comes into play. By properly organising your online travel banking you can save money, cut your spending AND also make sure you don’t get a nasty surprise like a blocked debit card!

In this post, we are going to take a look at travel banking issues such as foreign card fees and propose some awesome hacks and solutions. We’ll also touch on exchange rates, money security and share a few secret insights.

Let’s get banking!

tourism bank apps

Righty ahoy, let’s get cracking take a look at the essential travel banking hacks that every broke backpacker should know.

Changing Cash

How to avoid atm fees, get a travel bank card, travel banking & money tips, final thoughts on travel banking.

Personally, I always bring some hard cash with me when I am off on a long trip . It’s not ideal, it does pose a risk of theft and it isn’t something I can really recommend to you.

That said, for whatever reason you may one day need to bring cash and then change your home currency into local currency once you arrive. Money Changers inside airports usually offers the worst rates in town. They are basically playing on your naivety and your desperation to get your cab fare sorted ASAP. Only ever change a small amount of cash in the airport as you will nearly always find a much better deal once you hit town.

tourism bank apps

When looking to change cash, always shop around and always familiarise yourself with the up to date exchange rate. We use the Currency XE app which provides up to date rates in real time.

Once you find a money changer, do not be afraid to haggle for a better rate – you can usually bag a better rate if you are changing a large amount. Haggling for a better rate doesn’t really work at places like Western Union, but works really well at the boutique changers common in India, Bali, Nepal and Southeast Asia.

There is nothing more frustrating when it comes to travel banking than being charged unnecessary ATM bank fees every time you make a transaction from a foreign ATM. These transaction fees are usually substantial and can easily be the cost of your transport or the price of a beer.

shady atms while traveling safety tips

For example, my bank charges me a fixed fee of £2.75 ($4) every time I use an overseas ATM. This is often in ADDITION to any local ATM fees which can be another $4. That means that if you withdraw $10, you can wrack up another $8 in fees. Madness right?

So what to do?

ATM Shopping To Avoid Local Fees

First up, try to find ATM’s that don’t charge a local fee. Usually, you can find one even if it means doing a bit of “ATM shopping” and making withdrawal enquiries from multiple different machines. The best way to do this is to find a banking plaza or shopping mall where local banks ATM’s are usually lined up next to each other or near to one another. When you find one, make a note of the bank’s name and seek them out in future.

Do remember that even if the local bank is not charging you a fee to use the machine, your home bank almost certainly is.

The next one may seem a little counterintuitive, but I suggest withdrawing large amounts of cash at once rather than extracting money each day. This is because ATM fee’s are usually fixed amounts, rather than percentage based commissions. Paying $8 in fees on $10 is outright obscene whereas paying the same $8 on $100 is far more palatable.

I know that in certain countries it can leave you feeling a little wary if you are carrying large wads of cash on you, so investing in a money belt with a hidden security pocket is a good move.

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Avoiding Your Own Bank’s Fees

Once you’ve found a nice friendly local ATM that is not charing you to use it, there is still likely to be the problem of your bank charging you to use your card abroad.

As a rule, your bank will always charge you for using your card outside of your home country. This applies to both ATM withdrawals and card payments and exceptions are few and far between.

The answer is to simply not use your bank card when travelling. Happily there are a few workarounds you can employ to facilitate this;

  • Some Credit Cards offer good deals on international use and will often waive card payment fees . It is however, less common for credit cards to waive international cash withdrawal fees. If you do use your Credit Card overseas, remember to pay your balance immediately or within a month otherwise you start accruing interest (that’s the trap they are setting for you) .
  • Get a dedicated travel banking card . This leads very nicely to our next section.

Travel bank cards fundamentally work in the same way as your regular bank card. The difference is that you pre-load it with an amount (usually via a Smartphone/iOS app) and then use it when you go traveling. Let’s look at the benefits;

  • Travel bank cards allow you to manage your expenditure and not over-spend on your bank account.

2. They also offer some protection against theft – if a thief steals or clone’s the card, then they can get the amount pre-loaded onto the card but can’t clean your entire bank account out.

3. Best of all though , any travel banking card worth its salt will offer some kind of deal on ATM withdrawal fees and oversea’s card payments. For example, on my travel bank card I can withdraw £200 per month FEE FREE. I can also make fee free unlimited card payments.

tourism bank apps

A word on currencies – when you load a travel card you load it with a chosen currency (USD, GBP, EUR etc) . When you use it on the ground at your destination, a currency conversion will be applied using you card issuers rates. Therefore you will generally see some slight discrepancies here and there. These will sometimes work in your favour and sometimes against you.

Which Travel Bank Card Is The Best?

The travel banking card market is now in full bloom and there are quite a few different ones vying for your attention. Knowing where to start can be seriously bloody overwhelming and you may well be struggling to decide which travel bank card is the best.

Well, the answer is that it doesn’t really matter which is the best because you can have as many as you like! Furthermore, we suggest that you take full advantage and obtain multiple cards. Still, we do have a few personal recommendations for you so get ready to meet the future of your personal travel banking.

Wise (formerly Transferwise) initially existed as online antidote to Western Union and the primary model was facilitating low fee, money transfers between countries.

tourism bank apps

However, the Transferwise star is in the ascent and Transferwise have now launched a Debit card which connects to your Transferwise account. You can use the card to withdraw cash, or pay for dinner just like with any other bank card.

For travellers, the Transferwise benefits vary quite a bit depending on where in the world your card was issued (ie, your home country) . Typically though, you are entitled to 2 separate foreign withdrawals a month of between £100 – £200. As a UK resident, I can withdraw 2 x lots of £200 meaning it’s as goos as Monzo & Revolut.

A real market leader is Revolut, an online bank which operates via your smartphone.

For travellers, Revolut offer free ATM withdrawals of up to £200 ($275) per month. After the initial £200 limit has been reached, they charge a 2% withdrawal fee which can still work out cheaper than a standard bank withdrawal fee. However, if you add a few other travel cards to your collection, then you probably won’t need to go over the zero-fee limit at all.

You manage your Revolut account via your phone from where you can make instant transfers and top-ups, change your pin, and even make bank payments.

Payoneer is much like Transferwise. It started out a low fee international money transfer facility which is gradually morphing into a proper bank.

Their debit card is not quite as appealing as the Transferwise one as ATM withdrawals are charged at $2.75. However, they do offer fee free card payments.

Top Tip: The greatest hack is to obtain multiple travel cards in order to make the most of the fee-free withdrawal amounts. Personally, I have both Monzo and Revolut so I can withdraw £400 per month without paying fees which does me.

Pro Tip: If you are traveling as a couple, then open 1 account each, and then open a 3rd, joint account for an extra ATM free fee limit.

Monzo is another fin-tech start up which may one day rival the worlds big banks.

When Monzo launched, they tempted travellers (like me) by offering unlimited ATM withdrawals with zero fees. They have now substantially reduced this to £200 ($275) per month. That said, used in conjunction with Revolut, that’s £400 ($550) per month you can withdraw from foreign ATM’s without paying a single penny-cent in fees.

Monzo also offer unlimited, free card transactions outside of your home country.

Much like Revolut, Monzo is managed by an app and offers many of the same functions as Revolut. You can also open a joint Monzo account with another person and you can use Monzo to pay Direct Debits and Standard Orders meaning its good for both travel and domestic use.

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

Finally, it recently came to our attention that citizens of the US can open a bank account with Charles Schwab who will refund 100% of overseas ATM fees. Very Noyce!!

Now that we’ve dealt with the fundamentals, let’s take a look at some other important aspects of travel banking that will save and protect your money whilst travelling .

Getting Excellent Exchange Rates

For this step of travel banking, you need to familiarise yourself with the exchange rate of the country you are going to.  There are a tonne of currency exchange apps you can download onto your phone but my favorite is XE Currency Pro which is completely free! There are also some great online tools available. Knowledge is power and knowing the rate stops you been unduly ripped off.

ATM for cash withdrawal while travelling

My next piece of advice is to avoid currency exchange booths . Usually, people flock to these at airports but this is the most likely place to get stung with high fees and poor rates. On the other hand, if you find a local money changer you can usually negotiate a bit especially if you are changing a large amount.

On the road, you will be bumping into fellow travelers constantly. If they happen to be traveling in the opposite direction to you, exchange your cash with them. I have used this trick quite a few times and swapped cash with plenty of travelers I’ve met on the road.

International Money Transfers

Personally, I often have to move money around when traveling. I’ve found Transferwise to be the fastest and cheapest way to internationally transfer money between bank accounts.

These days, I have a Thai bank account which I use for most of my day to day living expenses, since I’m currently based in South East Asia.

Transferwise, now also issue a lovely green Debit card which you can use to withdraw cash and pay for things. The new app also allows you to manage your balances and expenditure easily.

Tell Your Bank You’re Hitting The Road

We said earlier on that you should try not to use your bank card when travelling. Still, at some point you may have no choice. Therefore, before you set off you should call your bank and let them know what your plans are.

Why is this you say?

Because if your bank notices “unusual activity” on your card (making transactions abroad!) it may suspend your account to prevent fraudulent activity. However, when it’s you making those transactions, a suspended bank card is a major pain in the ass.

Prevent an unwelcome surprise by informing your bank of your travel plans before you go . They will often put a note on your account to ensure your card is not frozen when you use it in the country you are traveling to.

If you are heading overseas for a longer time there will be a whole host of different aspects you will need to consider,  not only banking and access to funds alone. Check out Western Union’s post How to Become an Expat  for some top tips on getting yourself set up in your new home!

You should also sign up for Online Banking before you leave. It can often be easier to contact your bank online rather than trying to phone them from the other side of the globe.

Always Have a Spare Bank Card

Losing your bank or debit card when traveling is a monumental pain in the arse. Getting a replacement sent out to you can either prove difficult and slow, if not totally impossible. Therefore do not ever leave home without at least 2 cards in hand. This can be 2 different bank accounts, a bank account plus a credit or multiple pre-paid travel card.

But whatever you do, do something.

Bellroy Leather Travel Wallet

Also remember make sure NOT to ever leave them all tucked in your wallet – if you lose it, you lose them all! Take one out with you and leave the others safely stored with your bags and passport.

Stop Any Unneeded Direct Debits

So you’re all set to go backpacking around Southeast Asia. See you in 6 months home! You’ve packed your bag, sorted your Visa and even got a Yellow Fever jab. But have you remembered to review your direct debits? If you’re going to be in Thailand for the foreseeable, then do you really need to be paying $20 per month for PureGym in Brighton?! How about that US Sim card which isn’t going to work overseas?

I always review my Direct Debits before beginning a trip to see if there is anything I can cancel and usually save myself a few bucks per month. Obviously, check the Direct Debit cancelation terms before you do this to avoid late payment fees.

Hide Your Cash

Whether you are carrying $50 in your wallet, or $5000 in your backpack, you absolutely need to take care to hide your money when traveling. Sadly, travellers are often a target for street thieves and even hostel dorms are not as safe as we would like to think.

Protect whatever cash you have by hiding it. For tips and tricks, check out this post on the best ways to hide your money when traveling.

I strongly recommend keeping your cards in an RFID blocking wallet.

tourism bank apps

That’s pretty much it! I’m hoping you got at least one money or hassle-saving tip from this article.

Travel banking, although often overlooked, is very important when you’re trying to save money on the road — heck, it’s one of the top things I wish I knew before I started travelling ! But learning and improving is part of what the beautiful roads of life have to offer us.

Do you have any suggestions that we might have missed? If so, let us know down in the comments.

Happy banking, amigos!

Facing pressure from rights groups, World Bank suspends funding for Tanzania tourism project

By RODNEY MUHUMUZA Associated Press

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A U.S.-based rights group says the World Bank has suspended funding for a tourism project in Tanzania that allegedly caused the suffering of tens of thousands of villagers. The Oakland Institute says the World Bank’s decision to suspend the $150 million project, which aims to improve the management of natural resources and tourism assets in a remote part of southern Tanzanian, was “long overdue.” It says the bank’s delay in taking action “resulted in serious harms for the local communities.” It has accused the World Bank of failing to hold Tanzanian authorities accountable for extrajudicial killings and sexual assaults relating to the expansion of a national park. At least $100 million has already been disbursed for the project, which started in 2017.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — The World Bank has suspended funding for a tourism project in Tanzania that caused the suffering of tens of thousands of villagers, according to a U.S.-based rights group that has long urged the global lender to take such action.

The World Bank’s decision to suspend the $150 million project, which aims to improve the management of natural resources and tourism assets in a remote part of southern Tanzanian, was “long overdue,” the Oakland Institute said in a statement Tuesday, charging that the bank’s “failure to take immediate action resulted in serious harms for the local communities.”

At least $100 million has already been disbursed for the project, which started in 2017. The suspension of World Bank financing took effect April 18.

The Oakland Institute, a California-based rights watchdog whose work focuses on marginalized communities, for years led calls for the World Bank to stop funding the project known by the acronym REGROW, documenting serious rights abuses suffered by Indigenous communities in the area.

The group in a report released in November accused the World Bank of failing to hold Tanzanian authorities accountable for extrajudicial killings and sexual assaults relating to the expansion of Ruaha National Park.

Khalil al-Hayya, a high-ranking Hamas official who has represented the Palestinian militant group in negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage exchange deal, speaks during an interview with The Associated Press, in Istanbul, Turkey, Wednesday, April 24, 2024. (AP Photo/Khalil Hamra)

The report said the Tanzanian government’s tactics to force communities away and increase tourism in Ruaha National Park, a goal of the REGROW project, were “inextricably tied to its financing by the World Bank.”

The World Bank said at the time that it “has zero tolerance for violence in the projects it finances,” adding that a panel of inspectors was reviewing a complaint related to REGROW “to determine whether a compliance audit into the concerns raised is warranted.”

In recent correspondence between the World Bank and the Oakland Institute seen by The Associated Press, the lender confirmed the suspension of further disbursements to REGROW “until we are confident that the project is upholding our environmental and social standards.”

Anuradha Mittal, executive director of the Oakland Institute, said the World Bank’s decision to suspend funding for “a dangerous project” is a victory for marginalized communities in the East African country.

“It sends a resounding message to the Tanzanian government that there are consequences for its rampant rights abuses taking place across the country to boost tourism,” Mittal said. “The days of impunity are finally coming to an end.”

It was not immediately possible to obtain a comment from Tanzanian authorities.

The Oakland Institute documented at least 12 disappearances or extrajudicial killings allegedly carried out by rangers, in addition to multiple sexual assaults of women. Government agencies allegedly seized and auctioned large numbers of cattle, imposing a heavy financial strain aimed at pressuring herders to leave.

“During the first months of 2024, rangers illegally seized and auctioned off thousands of cattle from herders while preventing farmers from cultivating their land -– devastating countless livelihoods as a result,” it said in its statement Tuesday.

Tanzania relies heavily on tourism to finance its budget, and the country has long been trying to develop its extensive national parks to attract more visitors.

Tens of thousands of communities in other parts of Tanzania have been caught up in the efforts, putting local authorities under the spotlight over civilian abuses. These efforts, cited by Amnesty International and others, include the violent eviction of 70,000 Maasai from grazing lands in the Loliondo area to clear vast tracts of land for trophy hunting.

World Bank suspends Tanzania tourism funding after claims of killings and evictions

Plan to expand Ruaha national park has been beset by allegations of abuse, leading bank to withhold final $50m of $150m budget

The World Bank has suspended financing intended to develop tourism in southern Tanzania after allegations of killings, rape and forced evictions.

The bank began investigating last year after being accused of enabling abuses around Ruaha national park, which was due to double in size as part of a World Bank-supported programme .

“The World Bank is deeply concerned about the allegations of abuse and injustice related to the Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth (Regrow) project in Tanzania,” said a World Bank spokesperson.

“We have recently received information that suggests breaches of our policies in the implementation of the Regrow project. We have therefore decided to suspend further disbursement of funds with immediate effect.”

Tanzania was due to receive a further $50m, having already received $100m of the funding. Developments include building roads, viewing areas and visitor centres, and investing in wildlife monitoring and increased security.

The Guardian reported in September 2023 that the US-based thinktank the Oakland Institute had documented a range of abuses by Tanzanian rangers against villagers accused of encroaching on the national park, including the killing of cattle herders and fishers, the confiscation of livestock and the rape of women.

The Oakland Institute welcomed the “long overdue” decision, which came a year after the World Bank was first informed of potential violations of its own policies on safeguarding in April 2023.

Anuradha Mittal, the thinktank’s executive director, said: “It sends a resounding message to the Tanzanian government that there are consequences for its rampant rights abuses taking place across the country to boost tourism. The days of impunity are finally coming to an end.”

The Oakland Institute said that despite the World Bank announcing an investigation, the Tanzanian government moved forward in October with plans to redraw the boundaries of the national park, which would result in 21,000 people facing eviction.

The institute said their research shows other abuses have also continued, including the killing of a 21-year-old cattle herder in October and seizure and sale of thousands of cattle this year.

“The government’s plan to expand the park cannot go forward against the will of local communities, who will lose everything from such an expansion,” said Mittal. “In addition to preventing forced evictions, the bank must focus on how to remedy the harms caused to the villagers who have lost loved ones to ranger violence or had their lives devastated by livelihood restrictions.”

The Tanzanian government had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

HSBC and Westpac to unlock the convenience, security and efficiency of tap to pay transactions

Mastercard announced a new mobile virtual card app that enables virtual commercial cards to be seamlessly added to digital wallets. The innovative app is designed to offer financial institutions more choice in how they deliver the secure and sustainable contactless payment solutions that companies increasingly expect.

For over a decade, Mastercard has pioneered virtual card solutions to simplify tedious expense report and reconciliation processes for employees, contractors, recruits, and consultants who often use personal cards or cash for reimbursable business expenses. As companies navigate changing payment preferences particularly from the entry-level workforce – with over two-thirds of millennials having adopted digital wallets 1 – mobile technology is unlocking the next frontier of convenient contactless payments.

“Businesses worldwide are seeking fast and secure payment experiences, where payments can be made with just a click or tap, and finance teams can experience automatic reconciliation,” said Chad Wallace, global head of Commercial Solutions, Mastercard. “With today’s launch, we’re providing innovative tech that digitizes business and travel expenses, while also empowering businesses with more control of and visibility into their finances.”

The app leverages Mastercard’s innovative virtual card and tokenization platforms, enhanced data, and robust spend controls all within one easy-to-use interface. Accessing Mastercard mobile virtual cards is made seamless through the app so users can quickly experience the benefits of tap to pay. Mastercard mobile virtual cards can be used by organizations spanning a range of sizes and industries – including healthcare, insurance, fleet, higher education, and corporate travel.

Key capabilities and benefits of Mastercard’s mobile virtual card app include:

  • Increased security : The app offers the ability to set up a biometric authentication and an added security measure using a PIN to view card details. Each virtual card is also tokenized, enabling the cardholder’s sensitive data to be replaced by a unique card number so sensitive account details are not exposed.
  • Robust spend controls: Organizations can confidently stay compliant with expense policies using Mastercard’s transaction-level controls, which limit how, where, and when a mobile virtual card can be used.
  • Flexible integrations: Financial institutions can quickly get to market through Mastercard’s user interface or flexible API-based integrations, and offer unique features such as customized card art.
  • Holistic and seamless payment experience: The app provides a single interface to check the status of card balances and view pending and completed transactions, and is bank-agnostic, enabling users to access and manage virtual commercial cards issued by multiple participating financial institutions.
  • Real-time and enhanced data: For each mobile virtual card created, custom data elements are automatically captured and matched to the transaction, providing organizations with increased insights into spending and automatic reconciliation to optimize back-office processes.

HSBC Australia and Westpac will be the first financial institutions to offer organizations and corporate customers mobile wallet functionality through the Mastercard app.

“We’re pleased to partner with Mastercard to bring mobile wallet virtual cards to our Australian corporate clients, providing them with a smarter, safer, and faster way to pay,” said John Scott, Head of Global Payments, HSBC Australia. “Mobile wallet usage is growing, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for over half of the digital payment transactions globally 2 . As contactless payments continue to surge, it’s important that corporate clients have access to best-in-class payment solutions to keep their business secure and take advantage of the increased efficiency offered by the latest technologies. HSBC has a history of delivering innovative digital solutions to our corporate clients, and we’re proud to add to that legacy with the launch of mobile wallet virtual cards in Australia. We plan to launch in other markets later this year.”

“Westpac is pleased to be one of the first domestic banks in Australia to offer the new Mastercard mobile virtual card app to our corporate and commercial customers in addition to our existing virtual card capabilities. The global payments market is at an inflection point and the mobile wallet solution, combining digital innovation, real time processing and security through robust controls is another way we’re helping our customers,” said Jeff Byrne, Managing Director of Global Transaction Services at Westpac Institutional Bank.

The app will be available in other key markets for users with a commercial virtual card issued through an organization by a participating financial institution. Once registered for the app with an invitation code, users will find their commercial virtual cards automatically linked and ready to be added to select digital wallets for use across Mastercard’s trusted global network.

Chase Bank users report issues logging in. Here's what to know

tourism bank apps

Chase Bank users took to social media to report they were being logged out of the banking website and couldn't transfer money due to an issue on Wednesday

The issue appears to have started at about 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Downdetector , which monitors website issues and outages. At that time, more than 7,000 people were reporting problems accessing Chase.

Downdetector indicated that most Chase customers were having issues with logging on — both on mobile and desktop — and with completing transactions.

The Daily Mail reported that Chase Bank released a statement saying, "We're working to restore all services to chase.com and the Chase Mobile app right now. Thanks for your patience."

Downdector indicated there were minimal issues with the Chase Bank app and websites as of Thursday morning.

74-year-old Ohio woman charged with bank robbery was victim of a scam, family says

tourism bank apps

A 74-year-old Ohio woman who was a victim of an online scam allegedly tried to remedy her financial issues by robbing a credit union, police said.

Ann Mayers was arrested in her home in Hamilton, Ohio after the Fairfield Township Police Department said she robbed an AurGroup Credit Union. The credit union's employees told police that a woman entered the bank on April 19 and "demanded money while displaying a handgun," police said in a Facebook post .

While at Mayers' home, police found the 2014 silver Hyundai Elantra she was allegedly driving during the robbery, according to the post. Mayers admitted to the robbery when police arrived at the house, so officers subsequently took her into custody, the department said.

Detectives with Fairfield Township police found a handgun in Mayers' vehicle, the Facebook post said.

Before the alleged robbery, Mayers had no criminal history, police said. She's been charged with aggravated robbery with a firearm and tampering with evidence, which are both felonies, according to the department.

It is unclear from Butler County court records if Mayers retained legal counsel for her criminal case.

Is Ann Mayers a scam victim?

Police learned Mayers may have been a scam victim after detectives spoke with her family who told them she was sending money to an "unidentified individual," Sgt. Brandon McCroskey said in an email to USA TODAY.

"In that aspect, some may see her as a 'victim.' Unfortunately, Ann chose to victimize several other people in the bank by robbing it with a firearm as a remedy for her situation," McCroskey said.

If true, McCroskey called Mayers' situation "very sad and unfortunate." Regardless, Mayer "took the time to plan this robbery as evidence shows she removed her license plate from her car and tried to remove a bumper sticker," the sergeant said.

"She also reportedly spoke to family members about robbing banks in the days leading up to the robbery but the family did not take her comments seriously," according to McCroskey.

Mayers is currently being housed at the Butler County Jail, inmate records show. She'll remain at the jail until her initial court appearance, police said.

Moscow is the financial and political centre of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union. It has a population of around 13 million and an area of 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi) after an expansion in 2012. One-tenth of all Russian citizens live in the Moscow metropolitan area. Moscow is the second most populous city in Europe, after Istanbul , and has the most populous metropolitan area in Europe, with some 21 million residents. Moscow is in the UTC+3 time zone; there is no daylight saving time.

Many years since the break up of the Soviet Union, the economy has improved, and the modern era has brought upon a wide variety of construction projects, modern architecture and newer transport systems replacing the derelict ones during Soviet times.

Geography [ edit ]

Moscow is a large metropolis on the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city. The historical center is on the northern bank of the river. The other major waterway is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the 3 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.

The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and there are now no gardens there.

The Third Ring Road, completed in 2004, is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. It roughly follows the outline of Kamer-Kollezhsky val , the customs boundary of Moscow in the 18th – early 20th century. The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road (widely known by its abbreviation: MKAD-Moskovskaya kolcevaya avto doroga), a motorway which is 108 km (67 mi) long and encircles the entire city (similar to London's M25 and Paris' Périphérique ).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of Moscow features warm summers and long, cold winters.

Get in [ edit ]

See Russia#Get in for visa requirements to Russia.

By train [ edit ]

tourism bank apps

Moscow is a railway hub, with connections to all parts of Russia and far into Europe and Asia. Due to its hub status, Moscow's train stations are often crowded; trains are the usual form of intercity transport for most Russians. The stations have a reputation for being unsafe but paradoxically the threat of terrorism has improved things: security gates, policing and surveillance deter the casual thugs and villains. Guard your valuables and yourself as you would in any big city.

All long-distance trains are operated by Russian Railways and its subsidiaries, except for a few international trains with other operators. Tickets can be bought at stations or online . For domestic trains, you can show the ticket officer your online boarding pass; however, international trains require a printed ticket. There are usually ticket counters with English-speaking personnel - they may be marked as such, or the clerk may direct you to another counter if they can't cope with your English. See Russia#By train 2 for more details on travelling in Russia by train.

From Europe [ edit ]

All trains from Europe halted since 2020

Train stations in Moscow [ edit ]

Moscow has 10 train stations, 9 of which are near metro stations close to the center of Moscow. Be sure to note the station from which your train is departing, which will be indicated on the ticket, or online . Three stations ( Leningradsky , Yaroslavsky , and Kazansky ) are on one huge square, informally known as the "Three Stations' Square". A running joke among Moscow taxi drivers since the Soviet times is to be able to pick up a fare from one of them to the other, taking the unwary tourist on an elaborate ride in circles. Be prepared for enormous queues trying to enter or exit the Metro at peak times, as people are getting off or on the commuter trains.

By car [ edit ]

Many entry points to Moscow over the Ring Road and into the city feature rotating roadblocks, where teams of traffic police may stop a vehicle, especially if it is not featuring Moscow plates. You may be stopped and questioned but you'll be allowed to proceed if you have all the proper documents.

Foreign cars, especially expensive cars, might attract unwelcome attention, and there is cumbersome paperwork involved to enter Russia by car.

By boat [ edit ]

There is no scheduled passenger service to Moscow by boat; however, cruise ships do provide service to the Northern River Terminal, on the Moscow Canal near the Khimki Reservoir. The pier is not convenient to the city and it can take over 2 hours to reach the city centre by car.

A system of navigable channels and locks connects the Moskva River with the Volga River, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea , White Sea, the Azov, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. In the Soviet times this allowed the official propaganda to refer to Moscow as "a port on the five seas".

By bicycle [ edit ]

Moscow is the easternmost destination of the EuroVelo cycling routes . Eurovelo Route 2 , the Capitals Route, is a 5,500 km (3,400 mi) route starting in Galway , Ireland , passing through Dublin , London , Berlin , Warsaw and Minsk before terminating in Moscow.

By metro [ edit ]

tourism bank apps

The Metro is open from 05:30-01:00. Station entrances are closed at 01:00, and at this time the last trains depart from all of the termini stations. After 01:00, many locals will enter the train station using the exits, which are still open. Service on the ring line runs until 01:30, although entrances are closed at 01:00. The down escalators are also shut off at 01:00.

There is signage in the Metro stations in English and the Latin alphabet, but these signs are not everywhere. Each train carriage has a map in Latin script and there is one near the entrance to each station. Note the direction of the train before you alight. It is worth printing a map of the metro system in both Cyrillic and Latin letters to take with you.

All trains in the system have free WiFi onboard, but you will need to have a Russian phone number to get the authorization code to access the WiFi. Some of the older train cars are not climate controlled.

2 or 3 stations may be connected as transfer points but will each have a different name. There are 2 stations called Smolenskaya and 2 stations called Arbatskaya , but the station pairs are not connected to each other despite having the same name. Some of the stations are very deep underground, and transfer times between certain metro lines can take a lot of time. In the city centre, it can save time to go directly to the above-ground entrance of the line you want to take rather than to enter at a connecting station and transfer underground. On the escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left except for peak hours, when standing on the left side is also allowed.

Some of the train stations include beautiful architecture and it is worth taking a guided tour of the metro system. The most interesting stations in terms of decor are Komsomolskaya (ring line), Novoslobodskaya (ring line), Kievskaya (ring line), Kropotkinskaya (Line #1 - red), Kievskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Arbatskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Ploschad' Revolyutsii (Line #3 - dark blue), Mayakovskaya (Line #2 - dark green). Also look at the architecture of the ground entrance building of Arbatskaya (Line #4 - light blue) and Krasnye Vorota (Line #1 - red). History buffs may appreciate that Metro Line #1 (red) has the oldest stations, opened in 1935.

The Vorobyovy Gory Metro Station on Line #1 (red) is unique in that it is on a bridge crossing the Moscow River. This bridge also carries auto traffic road on another level. There is a beautiful view through the transparent sides of the station. A great observing point around Moscow is located nearby on Vorobyovy hills, next to the main building of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

There are a couple of unique trains operating through the system and you will be lucky if you get to ride them. Aquarelle (Watercolor) is a train that includes an art gallery. The train operates daily on Line #3 (dark blue). The Sokolniki Retro Train is a train modeled after the original 1930s trains and it occasionally is placed into service, usually around a major anniversary of the metro system.

The metro is relatively safe, although pickpockets are a problem, as they are in any environment where a lot of people are pressed together. Opportunistic petty crime, such as snatching someone's mobile phone and jumping out just as the doors are closing, is also commonplace. Take the usual precautions at night when gangs of inebriated teenagers may look for an excuse to beat someone up. There is no train guard or conductor, so the first car near the driver may be the safest. Every car is equipped with an intercom to the driver's cabin; they are beige boxes with a grill and a black button near doors, and mostly work, unless visibly vandalized.

By tram [ edit ]

There are several tram routes, although trams are not common in the city centre.

By monorail [ edit ]

Moscow Monorail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) monorail line with 6 stations. It is slower, less frequent, and has shorter operating hours when compared with the metro (every 30 min, 08:00-20:00). However, the view is picturesque. It is useful to get to the Ostankino Tower, or to get to the VDNKh exhibition centre from Metro Line #9 (silver). Interchanges between Moscow Metro and Monorail is free, no additional fee will be charged.

By hop-on-hop-off bus [ edit ]

The hop-on-hop-off bus is a convenient way for tourists to see the major sights quickly and efficiently. The buses feature English-speaking guides to answer any questions. A 1 day pass costs $24 for adults and $15 for children.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

Moscow has many attractions, but many of them are not friendly to a non-Russian-speaker. English-language newspapers like The Moscow Times , Element [dead link] , Moscow News and others can help to navigate towards English-language friendly attractions and services.

Circuses [ edit ]

Theatres [ edit ].

  • Bolshoi Theatre , one of the oldest and best known ballet and opera companies in the world.

Learn [ edit ]

tourism bank apps

Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and the former USSR. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students to learn Russian.

Work [ edit ]

You will need a work visa which is not an easy process. The visa needs to be arranged well in advance of traveling. It is possible to work in Moscow, you just need to find a good company to support you. The main obstacle for many foreigners will be a mandatory Russian language exam required to obtain a work permit.

Shopping malls [ edit ]

Large shopping malls are common near metro stations.

Tipping [ edit ]

For information on tipping in restaurants, see Russia#Eat .

Ethnic food [ edit ]

Authentic ethnic food from countries of the nearby Caucasus ( Azerbaijan , Georgia , Armenia ) is common in Moscow. Japanese food, including sushi, rolls, tempura, and steakhouses are very popular in Moscow. Other Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are becoming increasingly more common.

Budget [ edit ]

Street food [ edit ].

Free-standing kiosks serving sausages, meat pies, or kebobs are plentiful, although the origins of the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to occasionally make people sick.

Muscovites are also fond of their ice cream, consumed in any weather, even in the dead of winter, cheap and usually of superior quality; kiosks can be found all over the center and near all Metro stations.

Foodcourts 2.0 [ edit ]

This term is used in articles by local food critics: since 2016, several special food courts were opened with independent and small food chains, for those people who get bored of McDonald's-like food. They offer a wider choice of cuisines.

Clubs [ edit ]

Nightlife in Moscow is bustling, intense and exciting. It starts quite late; it's common for the headliners to start at 02:00-02:00. Most noticeable are areas near Solyanka street and Krasniy Oktyabr' place. At summer time a lot of clubs opening open-air terraces called "verandas". Most of clubs in Moscow are very picky of who they let in, so make sure you have a positive attitude and dress up if you are going to a fancy club.

Gazgolder [dead link] (not far from Kremlin) is among the best.

Cafes [ edit ]

Moscow has several café chains with great coffee including Coffeemania and Coffee Bean [dead link] . Moscow also has a good selection of tea saloons. High-quality infusion teas such as Newby, are widely available in cafes, both in packets and loose.

Asking to add boiling water to the tea you ordered earlier is a practice that some cafes don't welcome, but normally it's acceptable.

Sleep [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

Moscow enjoys a relatively low crime rate.

tourism bank apps

Drunk people are the most likely sources of problems. In the past years, lots of policemen were corrupt, and it was best to avoid them. Nowadays Moscow has a Tourist Police force, whose officers are able to speak foreign languages and help tourists. Police officers are equipped with body-cameras.

It is preferable to avoid some parts of the outer districts of Moscow, especially in the south. Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones. The same problems can be witnessed in the surrounding regions and in other Russian cities as well.

While traveling in Moscow, as in the rest of Russia, you should always have your passport with you. If you look non-white, your papers may get checked more often than otherwise. The police may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow. Always remember that if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper at a time of check-in, so don't worry in this case. The police are usually looking for migrants from Central Asia and unless you fit this profile, you are unlikely to be questioned.

Women should take caution walking alone late at night since they may receive unwanted attention from drunk men. Women should also stay clear of large companies of men in front of bars, restaurants, etc. It is best to walk with a friend if possible.

Streets can become very slippery in winter. Wear shoes or, even better, boots with decent grip to prevent twisted ankles. Ice patches can be hard to spot. A waterproof raincoat is also sensible.

Traffic is poorly handled, and vehicle accident rates are very high.

If you need help with translation, ask students or pupils: younger people are more likely to be able to help you than the older generations.

Connect [ edit ]

For information on using telephones and buying SIM cards in Russia, see Russia#Connect .

Mobile Internet is quite affordable in Russia, but you have to buy Russian SIM-card first.

Wireless Internet [ edit ]

Moscow Metro has Wi-Fi in all trains. It is ad-supported.

Mosgortrans has Wi-Fi spots on every bus, trolleybus and tram. Also sometimes you can find Wi-Fi spot on a public transport stop.

Beeline Wi-Fi [dead link] operates the largest network of both paid and free Wi-Fi access points. If there is a charge, you can pay online via credit card.

There is a large network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city centre; check your device in the middle of a busy area and you may find one.

Many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi - ask for password. Most bookstores offer free Wi-Fi, including "Dom Knigi" on New Arbat Street or "Respublika" bookstore on Tverskaya near Mayakovskaya Metro Station.

Some establishments that offer free Wi-Fi may require you to verify an authorization code sent to a Russian phone number before gaining access, but for the most part, foreign numbers also work as of 2016.

Cope [ edit ]

Embassies [ edit ].

Moscow is one of the global diplomatic capitals, competing with Berlin , Brussels , Beijing , Paris , London , Tokyo and Washington D.C. . Most of the world's countries have their embassies in the city.
