Fiji has an earned reputation as an island paradise. Sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and private island resorts are found throughout the 333-island archipelago.

But if you'd like to dive in a bit deeper than your resort pool, we've done the hard work for you and rounded up the most incredible things to do in Fiji .

A trip to Fiji is a DIY adventure that involves nature and immersion into Fijian culture. No matter whether you spend your days snorkeling over rainbow reefs, searching for waterfalls on lush trails , sipping kava with new friends or lounging on a sandy beach , you’re bound to have a good time on these islands.

1. Visit a village and experience life the Fijian way

Anyone who has ever pulled ashore to a Fijian island resort can testify to being greeted warmly and with welcoming songs, but to really get familiar with this beautiful place, head to a homestay or visit a village. Homestays provide an unmatchable, authentic insight into the real Fiji – you’ll be living with a Fijian family, like a Fijian family.

Village visits offer a shorter – but equally enthralling – experience. On the main island of Viti Levu , the strikingly scenic Navala offers guests an immersive stay in a traditional village, while offshore, homestays on Waya Island welcome visitors keen on seeing the Yasawas from a local perspective.

While you’re more likely to catch a meke (lively performance enacting ancient lore) at a resort than a village, there’s a good chance you’ll be treated to a slow-cooked lovo (pit oven) feast. Expect loaded plates of succulent meat and fish, plenty of local root vegetables (cassava, taro, yams) and palusami (tinned beef or vegetables, onion and coconut cream wrapped in taro leaves).

2. Cheer your heart out at a rugby game

Look at Fiji’s seven-dollar banknote, issued in honor of Fiji’s national rugby sevens team, and you’ll see just how dedicated the country is to the sport. Rain or shine, any patch of grass is turned into a rugby pitch come sunset and weekends. Check out a game of footy frenzy at Suva’s National Stadium  or join spirited supporters on the sidelines at an all-in village match.

3. Attend a church service

On Sundays, you’re guaranteed goosebumps – whatever your beliefs – as congregations harmonize to the heavens. Wander around any Indigenous Fijian village or neighborhood to witness churchgoers dressed in their Sunday best.

Bold, colorful patterns are the norm for many, accenting the bright gardens typically planted around each house of worship. Most churches welcome outsiders, though services are not always given in English. Those taking place at Taveuni ’s Wairiki Catholic Mission are particularly divine.

4. Join in exciting festivals for the senses

Beyond the resort walls, this island nation is alive with thriving traditions, fabulous festivals and Fiji-style fun. Winter is the season when locals tend to let loose at festivals: learn more about Fijian culture at the week-long Bula Festival, and witness astonishing mind-over-matter devotion at the South Indian Fire-Walking Festival . As temperatures begin to rise in October, Hindus and Christians across the country light up to celebrate Diwali.

Planning tip:  If your vacation doesn't line up with the South Indian festival, fire-walking also takes place on Beqa Island all year long.

5. Shop for fresh produce at the market

Year-round, you can sample the flavors of Fiji at the country’s open-air markets. From the biggest – Suva’s busy Municipal Market – to small, mats-on-the-ground affairs in tucked-away villages, markets are Fiji’s heart and soul, offering locals not just a place to shop, but also to banter and connect.

When browsing these ubiquitous markets, you’ll notice produce placed in a neat pile and priced to sell together. If you attempt to buy a single tomato, the vendor might hand it over free of charge. Bulk buying is a quirk of Fiji’s culture of sharing, as fruits and vegetables are taken home and swapped among neighbors. Gorge on papayas, pineapples, mangoes, passionfruit, coconuts, lime juice, watermelon and more.

Planning tip: Keep a look out for stands selling chilled pineapples cut into a swirl on its stem like a popsicle. It’s the ultimate refreshing treat on a hot and humid day.

6. Snorkel and scuba dive in an underwater wonderland

One of the country’s top offshore draws is the chance to swim and snorkel near huge manta rays, especially in the channel between the Yasawa group’s Nanuya Balavu and Drawaqa islands, and further south at Kadavu’s aptly named Manta Reef. In the Yasawas, Mantaray Island and Barefoot Manta resorts offer ethical "look, don’t touch" manta ray encounters; in Kadavu, head out with the crew from Matava Resort or Kokomo Private Island Resort .

Prefer seeing Fiji’s toothier creatures? From their base at Pacific Harbour, Beqa Adventure Divers run undersea adventures sure to get even the most daring diver’s flippers quivering: encounters with huge bull and tiger sharks at Shark Reef Marine Reserve .

Deemed the soft coral capital of the world in the diving community, blow bubbles along walls of white or purple corals in the Somosomo Strait. Coral reefs resembling cabbage patches, technicolor quilts and shag carpets made from anemones also await you.

7. Peer into the treetops for Fiji’s winged residents

The ‘Garden Island’ of Taveuni is famous throughout the birdwatching world. Sheltering upwards of 100 bird species, Fiji’s third-largest island boasts prime twitching spots including the 1195m-high (3920ft) Des Voeux Peak , a habitat of the rare, elusive orange dove and the tiny, endangered silktail; the Vidawa Rainforest Trail, with guided birdwatching walks; and the dreamy Lavena coast, where hatchlings can be seen teetering in the treetops.

The rugged remote island of Kadavu also offers a birdwatcher’s bounty; its rainforests harbor a kaleidoscope of tropical birds, including four found nowhere else in the world.

Bats are Fiji’s only native mammal, and the islands host six species. After sunset, you can usually spot them bolting out of caves or rustling in the treetops. Fruit bats often bite into a papaya as soon as it’s ripe and ready for harvest, much to the tree owner’s chagrin.

8. Cruise to untamed islands by boat

Picture this: you’re bubbling calmly beneath gentle turquoise waves, enveloped in silence and engrossed in the antics of a cheeky clownfish. Suddenly, you feel a swish of movement behind you: is it a shark? A giant ray? Alas, it’s a squadron of snorkelers splashing frantically to fit into an undersea selfie. If this scenario rings any bells for you, a live-aboard in Fiji could be just the ticket.

An alluring adventure for intrepid divers – though some cater to snorkelers and even those just getting their sea legs – live-aboards offer the chance to visit uncluttered sites far beyond anywhere land-based operators may go; some live-aboards also drop anchor at otherwise unreachable islands. Most itineraries run for five, seven or ten days, with all meals and accommodation included in the price.

Lautoka-based Nai’a offers trips exploring Lomaiviti , Bligh Water and Namena Marine Park . Captain Cook Cruises’ MV Reef Endeavour ventures to the major island groups, with rare visits to the remote islands of Lau .

Otherwise, chartering your own yacht and cruising wherever you please, whenever you please is also in reach. There are multiple private boat charters of the sailing and motor variety ranging from nearly piratical to luxurious.

9. Indulge in a spa treatment

Let the aftermath of a long-haul flight or a day spent in the heat behind you with a traditional bobo massage. A spa experience in Fiji begins with the sweet smell of coconut oil infused with plumeria petals.

Using a combination of kneading with the thumbs, hands and elbows, stress is released from the body through massage. A signature experience at most spas is a four-hand massage, where two massage therapists offer treatment at the same time – almost all spas have two-table rooms, making it one of the best things to do in Fiji for couples.

Convinced? Some of the best spas around Fiji include Yasawa Island Resort , where you can hear waves crash as you relax in an open-air room overlooking the beach, Outrigger Fiji for hilltop ocean views, Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa for banana leaf wraps, and Pure Fiji in Suva for an escape from urban living.

10. Test your spice threshold with Fiji’s curries

With almost 40% of Fiji’s population being of Indian heritage, you’ll find an array of Indian restaurants throughout Viti Levu and Vanua Levu with a South Pacific flair. Piping hot parcels of roti stuffed with pumpkin or eggplant and coconut curry are often sold on roadsides.

In Suva , order as many dishes as you can muster at restaurants like Swagat, Ashiyana and Maya Dhaba . If you find yourself on an outer island, don’t fear. Many resorts and hotels serve some form of curry you won’t find outside of Fiji.

11. Hike along untamed trails

Though beaches often receive the brunt of tourist attention, it’s worth packing a pair of hiking shoes to see Fiji’s wild side. Islands like Taveuni, Vanua Levu and Viti Levu are famed for their mountain treks and waterfalls, while treks across islands in the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands offer an insight into village life.

You’ll rarely encounter a crowd on the trails – you might be thankful if you do. Trails are often unmarked, have little cell phone reception and can merge with livestock paths. Getting a local hiking guide to lead the way and share insight into the landscape and culture will ensure a wonderful experience.

Traditional Kava, the national drink of Fiji

12. Drink kava, Fiji’s beverage of choice

From formal events to parties among friends, kava is Fiji’s drink of choice. Kava ( yagona ) is made from pepper root ground into a fine powder and mixed with water. It’s typically scooped from a large wooden bowl ( tanoa ) and served in a coconut shell cup ( bilo ).

The drink is a little bitter, resembles muddy water and has a sedative effect that kicks in once the lips start to tingle. The connection that takes place around a tanoa is known as talanoa , an integral part of decision making and communication in Fiji.

Each Fijian community has its own etiquette and customs when it comes to drinking kava, and travelers are quickly forgiven for not hitting each cue. When in doubt, you can follow the common kava drinking customs of Fiji’s capital city. When a cup is handed to you, clap before taking it with both hands. Drink the liquid in one go if you can, hand it back with both hands, clap again and say “Bula!”

Feeling overwhelmed? Ask for low tide and your cup will be served half full next time it comes around. Most accommodations and homestay experiences offer kava ceremonies to guests, though you can also try it at a café like Mana Coffee in Suva or make it yourself from one of the official (or not-so-official) kava shops around the islands.

13. Catch a wave

One of the world’s premier surf destinations with near-perfect barrels at Restaurants and Cloudbreak , a trip to Fiji is a surfer’s dream. Waves range from gentle beginner-friendly beach breaks to guillotine tubes over coral reef.

If you’re not sure where to start, surf tour companies like Surf Tours based near Viti Levu’s Momi Bay choose waves for guests based on ocean conditions and surfers’ abilities. Ocean-obsessed travelers can stay with fellow surfers at resorts like Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort or Tavarua Island Resort where waves are easily accessible.

Cultural considerations

  • Avoid visiting Fijian villages on Sundays unless specifically invited – these days are for church and family.
  • Be sure to bring a sevusevu (gift) to offer to the head of the village on arrival. Kava root (available at almost every market in Fiji) is the most common sevusevu.
  • Dress conservatively and be sure your shoulders are covered (all genders). Ideally, a sulu (wrapped cloth or skirt) should be worn.
  • Remove your shoes before entering a bure (traditional thatched cabin), and stoop as you go through the door. Sit cross-legged on the mat, and keep your head bent lower than your host’s.

All activities on the island are mainly agriculture and tourism is only a small part to settle down.

tourism fiji youtube

Turtle Island

tourism fiji youtube

tourism fiji youtube

Island Vanua Levu

Head north of Viti Levu and you can explore Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu. Compared to Fiji’s tourist destinations such as Nadi and Mamanucas, Vanua Levu accounts for only a fraction of the number of tourists, making it perfect especially during high season.

tourism fiji youtube

Vanua Levu is known for its rugged beauty, tropics and unspoiled nature. Start your Fiji adventure in Savusavu, a laid-back harbor town where you can encounter a unique indigenous culture. If you go into the jungle, you will see the most biodiverse areas of the Pacific.

Mamanuca Islands

Traveling to Fiji will not be perfect if visitors ignore the Mamanuca volcanic archipelago, which includes about 20 small islands such as Monoriki, Malolo, Tokoriki, Beachcomber… Dubbed the paradise on earth, Mamanuca attracts both international tourists and famous filmmakers. All it has is a series of white sand beaches, lush greenery no different from Dubai’s famous Palm Island (Palm Jumeirah). Adorn for that picture are thousands of coral reefs bearing the breath of the most primitive and most charming things.

tourism fiji youtube

And for those who love the vibrant party atmosphere, Beachcomber Island  in Mamanuca will be the most suitable destination. During the day, Beachcomber offers series of water sports activities such as swimming or scuba diving. And when the sun sets off, this place seems to be another world, the world of entertainment activities, from live the music performances, the dancing shows to the tasty buffets…

tourism fiji youtube

You can take a boat to explore the colorful coral reefs of Mamanuca islands, you will see the diversity of marine life. A tour on a cruise will take you to places only the locals know about. You can choose from great recreational activities such as surfing, day fishing, snorkeling to see corals and colorful tropical fish.

tourism fiji youtube

To getting to the Mamanuca Islands is fairly easy, either by seaplane or by boat from the west side of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. The closest stop to Viti Levu is Port Denarau, a 15-minute drive from Nadi International Airport. The only difficulty is deciding which island to choose.

Port Denarau

tourism fiji youtube

The port is the starting point leading to two famous tourist destinations, Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. You will be amazed by the picturesque beauty of Denarau port, which will be a unique check-in point for photography enthusiasts.

Coral Coast

tourism fiji youtube

One of the popular attractions in Fiji is Coral Coast which stretches for 50 miles and is surrounded by magnificent coral reefs. Coming here, visitors will have the opportunity to dive into the deep sea, drop themselves in the heart of colorful coral. Not only that, this coast also attracts tourists by high-class and luxurious resorts. Along the Coral Coast there is also a Fiji spice garden, where visitors can indulge in the suffocating aroma of spices.

Navua River

tourism fiji youtube

Located on the island of Viti Levu, the Navua River originates on the southeast slope of Mount Gordan and flows towards the southern coast for a range of 65km. In addition, it is also famous for the Upper Navua Conservation Area, which is a tributary that flows through a narrow gorge. The cool jade-colored water flows, flanked by steep cliffs that have been tinged with time mixed with moss, bringing a lyrical and beautiful space like the way into the land of the Hobbits.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple

tourism fiji youtube

To find a sense of tranquility, many visitors who come to Fiji do not forget to visit the temple Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple located in Nadi, the third largest urban area in this beautiful island nation. Leaving behind the noise of daily life, visitors can immerse themselves in the sacred and relax with the most comfortable mind. Considered to be the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere, Sri Siva Subramaniya wears the Dravidian architectural style (square spire architecture, with meticulously detailed motifs from the bottom of the spire to the top of the spire) which is very special when it comes to combination of a lot of novel colors. ‘We’re ready’: Fiji prepares to welcome tourists almost two years after closing borders

Fully vaccinated travellers from select countries including New Zealand and Australia will be able to visit from November

F iji says it is already experiencing a boom in demand after announcing this week that it would open up quarantine-free travel to visitors from select countries, almost two years after closing its borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our website data is well up – we are seeing a real lift in interest. It is exciting, and we want to encourage people to come and spend Christmas and new year in Fiji,” Tourism Fiji chief executive Brent Hill said.

“Our tourism industry has been waiting a long time for this. While not everyone will be able to open on 1 December, the overwhelming majority of our industry and those employing significant numbers are very much behind the announcement, and ready to safely open our borders once again to the world.

“We have seven more weeks to really fine tune our preparations, but we have all been working overtime since the start of the year, to reopen our industry again to the world. We’re ready.”

Fiji will reopen its borders to fully vaccinated travellers from countries including the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and most Pacific Islands countries from November 11, though the official reopening will be on 1 December, when the country’s first scheduled tourism flight on national carrier, Fiji Airways, will arrive.

Visitors must have a negative Covid test three days before arrival and also take a rapid test on arrival. Tourists and returning residents will still have to undergo a two or three-day hotel confinement respectively.

Overwater bure’s at Fiji's Marriott Momi resort

Prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the country was “entirely confident in our ability to manage the risk associated with quarantine-free travel.”

“Our planes are prepared. Our airports are adapted. Every Fijian hotel and tour operator in Fiji will be certified under the Care Fiji Commitment Certification program, which will require all hotels and excursions to meet the highest standards of comfort, health and safety.”

Bainimarama said hotels would have to guarantee access to comfortable, well-supplied isolation facilities and medical care such as testing, routine staff-swabbing, and escalation protocols in the event that positive cases were detected.

‘No jab, no job’

The easing of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements comes after the government launched an aggressive vaccination campaign; 96.6% of the target population of those aged 18 and over have received their first dose, while 80.3% have received both doses.

The government’s “no jab, no job” work policy for civil servants and staff in the private sector, announced in July , forced many Fijians to get vaccinated.

Fantasha Lockington, head of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, said months of preparation had gone into planning the reopening.

“The industry has been keenly watching our core markets of Australia and New Zealand and their own management of vaccinations and border management, because Fiji’s reopening must eventually coincide with these countries allowing their citizens to travel here,” she said.

An aerial view of the Fiji’s Coral Coast

“Those tourism operators who have remained open, have been ready with the required health protocols in place, even though these openings may be at reduced capacity or only opening intermittently.

“But they’ve been ready nonetheless and have been able to survive on the limited local demand, as well as the smaller but quite lucrative influx of visitors through our Blue (yachting) and VIP Lane initiatives.”

Lockington said it had been extremely difficult for smaller operators with restricted movement curtailing even local tourism, with many operators needing confirmation of their key markets being allowed to travel to more confidently plan their respective reopenings.

“From a resort’s perspective they have to factor in the cost of a closed resort maintaining their operations with a skeleton staff to keep things on, against when they go fully operational with higher overheads and open with all staff on deck and restaurants and bars fully stocked up again but still without any revenue coming in until your guests have all but arrived,” she said.

Before the pandemic, tourism contributed nearly 40% of Fiji’s gross domestic product – about FJ$2bn (AU$1.4bn) – and directly or indirectly employed over 150,000 people. But as visitor arrivals fell by 87%, the economy plummeted by 19% in 2020.

“Even though the economists keep saying otherwise, Fiji might just surprise everyone with what may start with a gradual recovery that gathers momentum,” Lockington said.

“The Fijian diaspora around the world are really keen to see family and friends and have shown massive support with interest in bookings way ahead of the announcement. They’re planning to take their holidays here knowing that they will be supporting more Fijians to get their jobs back.”

Fiji’s highest growth markets for the past five years were India, South Korea, China and New Zealand. Australia remains Fiji’s largest market, with the number of Australian visitors growing at an average rate of 2%. Since 2013, tourist arrivals to Fiji have grown by an average of 5%.

Fiji is open to tourists for the first time in nearly 2 years. Here's what my visit was like.

  • On December 1, I flew on the first US flight to Fiji since its borders closed in March 2020.
  • The famously friendly Fijian hospitality felt amplified after nearly two years without tourism.
  • I had an amazing time visiting the beautiful beaches and checking out the gorgeous views.

Insider Today

I was one of the first international travelers to arrive in Fiji since the islands' borders were closed to foreign nationals in March 2020.

Shutting its borders early helped Fiji avoid the ravages of a pandemic that could have wreaked havoc on a remote archipelago. Twenty months later, the nation is taking precautions to try to safely welcome international visitors again.

Here's what it was like to visit Fiji after its almost two years without tourism.

After taking a few precautions, I boarded the first international tourist flight to Fiji in nearly 2 years

On November 30, I set out from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to get to Los Angeles International Airport for the inaugural flight to Fiji with my vaccination cards, a negative COVID-19 test, and hotel reservations for my stay.

I downloaded the CareFIJI contact-tracing app for use during my stay and had gotten my booster shot two days prior.

I took these precautions because I know Fiji is trying to safely welcome tourists back — and the majority of its population is fully vaccinated . As of December, all travelers going to Fiji need a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 24 hours before the flight.

I was invited to be one of a handful of US journalists on the first Fiji Airways flight from the US to Fiji in almost two years. My round-trip business-class ticket from LAX to Nadi International Airport was covered.

A business-class round-trip ticket typically costs about $4,500 to $5,000. Round-trip economy-class tickets can be about $720 to $800.

When I got off the long flight, I was surrounded by crowds and cameras

It was nearing midnight when I boarded my long-haul flight to the South Pacific. By the time I arrived at my destination, an entire day had evaporated.

The entire travel time — from leaving for Newark to checking into my Fijian hotel room — was 23 hours.

But the energy and excitement awaiting me at Nadi International eliminated any time-zone-induced grogginess.

Fire engines flanked the runway, greeting our plane with a water salute. Grass-skirted musicians and dancers serenaded the arriving guests as they exited past security — I was even pulled into an early-in-the-morning dance in front of a crowd of strangers.

A marching band performed outside the arrivals terminal as Fiji tourism representatives handed out traditional Fijian gifts to guests. News cameras lingered by the exit doors to interview the jet-lagged and unsuspecting arrivals about their experience aboard Fiji Airways — which is how I found myself, completely disheveled, broadcast on the evening news.

As we drove toward the roundabout leaving the airport, people danced along the periphery of the road, cheering and waving to our vehicle.

I began my trip with Fiji's largest island, Viti Levu, and its 'best-kept secret,' Savusavu

Of Fiji's 300 islands, only about 100 are inhabited, and where you choose to stay can drastically affect the landscape, culture, and weather of your trip.

The western side of the archipelago is sunnier with bluer waters, and the northern side is more rustic and remote.

On Viti Levu, which is more central, I stayed at a beachfront bure (a Fijian word for a wood-and-straw hut) overlooking a lagoon at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay .

After two days I headed northeast to Vanua Levu, home of the seaside town of Savusavu , described as Fiji's " best-kept secret ."

"Oh, now you've really been to Fiji," my driver told me when I landed on the remote, mountainous island after two Fiji Link flights from the mainland.

I stayed at a beachfront bure at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort , an eco-luxury resort surrounded by tropical forests, overlooking Savusavu Bay.

In the morning I boated out to the uninhabited private island of Naviavia for a Fijian breakfast of champions that included papaya fruit, pineapple, soursop, watermelon, and coconut juice.

I saw plenty of lush greenery and famous reefs during my trip

After breakfast I explored the famous reefs that are known as the " soft coral capital of the world ."

I saw the bright, lush corals and tropical fish that populate the giant gorgonians beneath the water. The diving reminded me of exploring an underwater mountain, as the drop-off was spectacular, and when you looked down it felt like you could see forever.

Related stories

Later I went on an excursion to swim beneath the jungle pools of Nakawaga Waterfall and learn about the history of the land and the medicinal properties of the flora and fauna with a local healer.

Next I explored parts of the Kadavu Island Group

On Monday, December 6, I headed south for the Kadavu Island Group to visit Kokomo Private Island , one of the most luxurious resorts in Oceania.

The trip required a 45-minute flight from Savusavu to Nadi, then another from Nadi to Nausori, where I was collected via helicopter to arrive on the private island.

The 45-minute helicopter ride took me over the Astrolabe Reef, said to be the fourth-largest barrier reef in the world.

When I went diving there later, I was so entranced by the underwater mountains that extend over 62 miles across the South Pacific that I nearly descended too far into the watery depths. My diving guide had to instruct me to come up for air.

The Kadavu Island Group is famous for the diversity of its underwater corals and sea life.

On land, the island was an explosion of tropical flowers. It's home to the Kadavu parrot, a protected species.

After a couple of days of reef fishing, spa treatments, and beach hopping, I boarded a seaplane for Port Denarau and spent a night drinking rum at Suka Bar in the Sofitel Fiji .

At Castaway Island, I befriended a shark along the Malolo Barrier Reef

The next morning, I boarded a high-speed catamaran to Castaway Island in the Mamanucas.

The catamaran, which transports passengers to different islands and resorts, reminded me of a school bus — except everyone is thrilled to begin their vacations and there's a wet bar.

The first morning at Castaway, I visited the Supermarket, the famous dive site along the Malolo Barrier Reef.

At one point during my dive, a blacktip reef shark swam directly toward me. The shark, which was over 6 feet long, started circling me at one point.

He seemed curious and friendly (and distinctly masculine, I've decided). The shark followed us for the rest of our dive and even came up toward the surface for our safety stop.

I saw the Mamanuca Islands, where some popular shows are filmed

The Mamanuca Islands , which consist of about 20 islands along the western side of Fiji, are pretty popular with travelers. That's also the part of Fiji where shows like "Castaway," "Survivor," "The Bachelor," and more were filmed.

Fiji's west side is sunnier and famous for its blue water, white-sand beaches, and great waves for surfing.

I wasn't able to surf at the time, so I hit up Cloud 9 , a floating bar in the middle of the South Pacific that overlooks Cloudbreak .

Finally, I sunbathed on private beaches and hunted for crabs on Turtle Island

My final stop was Turtle Island , in the Yasawas of northwest Fiji.

I reached Turtle Island after five hours at sea and was greeted with singing and dancing, as well as a traditional kava ceremony.

There I went on daily excursions to the island's 12 private beaches , including Devil's Beach, where the 1980 drama "The Blue Lagoon" was filmed.

I spent afternoons riding horseback to the mountaintop to view the sunset and gathering around communal tables with other guests.

Best of all, I learned how to go crab hunting in the Fijian bush after nightfall, mastering the two-step method of capturing a crab with my bare hands. (I caught three.)

There's a lot to see in Fiji, and it was amazing to be welcomed back

I boarded my flight home tanner, calmer, and happier than I was before I departed. The kindness and beauty I experienced made it clear to me why Fiji has been called one of the happiest nations on Earth .

I also couldn't believe how much transportation I took while exploring Fiji's many islands. Aside from the four long-haul flights (transpacific and transcontinental each way), my 12-day trip required four water taxis, three Fiji Link planes, three speedboats, two high-speed catamarans, one seaplane, and a helicopter to navigate the Fijian archipelago.

Overall, it was amazing to be able to visit Fiji after months of it being closed off to international visitors.

With all the precautions in place, I felt safe in this South Pacific paradise, and I can see why it's on so many bucket lists. Just note that it's important to check the latest safety guidelines if you're planning a visit.

Talk about ‘hidden gems’: One of the least-visited countries wants you to check it out

Bokanbotin is a private islet in a marine protected area.

As my boat slowly approached the 7-acre islet of Bokanbotin – a 15-minute ride from Majuro, capital of the Marshall Islands – it looked as if I was sailing into a desktop wallpaper.

A small white sandy beach wraps around an Edenic jungle. Under the sun, the turquoise water around the tiny island was as clear as glass – you could easily see the baby reef sharks swim below. No one else was on the private island, a secluded oasis.

The Pacific has no shortage of unspoiled islands like Bokanbotin to enjoy. Think Fiji or Tahiti, which are renowned as top tourist destinations for being akin to paradise. That’s not the case for fellow island nation the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). As one of the least-visited countries in the world, the RMI gets only about 6,000 visitors a year . In comparison, just in June, Fiji received more than 90,000 travelers .

Within the last couple of years, the Marshall Islands started to explore tourism as an economic driver and as a way to promote environmental and cultural preservation. In 2018, the government established the Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism to lead the charge with a heavy focus on sustainable tourism .

A hidden gem in the Pacific Ocean, the country offers stunning natural beauty, warm hospitality and a rich culture to experience. RMI offers quintessential island living, with a well-known fishing culture plus pristine diving and surfing – if you know where to go.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

“I think that's all we can offer the world, our culture and trying to maintain that culture, our customs, our language, that's very important,” said Carlos Domnick, CEO of the Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism.

More: Fodor's Travel put Maui on its 'No List' of places tourists may want to avoid in 2023. Here's why.

Why hasn’t the Marshall Islands explored tourism before?

Most visitors to the RMI are there for business or humanitarian reasons – only about 16% are there for leisure, according to the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative.

Unlike Hawaii, where tourism represents a quarter of the economy , in the RMI, tourism represents just 10% of the country’s total gross domestic product . With a population of about 41,000 , only about 468 Marshallese were employed in the tourism industry in 2018, according to Domnick.

For the young country with a dark past and an uncertain future, tourism hasn’t been on residents’  – or investors’ – minds. “It’s a very new concept for us,” Domnick said.

The country initially wanted to explore tourism in the late 1990s, but it wasn’t able to get the idea off the ground, he said. As the RMI notices how tourism can transform countries, a renewed effort is taking place to bring more outreach to communities and outer atolls so “they understand the value of tourism and can also join in this effort to bring more visitors to our country.”

Is tourism to the Marshall Islands sustainable?

As climate change causes rising sea levels, scientists estimate the low-lying chain of atolls could become uninhabitable as soon as the 2030s . Over the past decade, coastal flooding has worsened, flooding roads and threatening buildings, according to Reginald White, director of the RMI’s National Weather Service Office.

“It’s hard to promote tourism … not only to try to bring tourists but to bring tourism investments as well. It’s hard to bring those in when you’re telling the world you’re sinking,” Domnick said. “So we’ve got a tough job, and we’re just trying to strike that balance moving forward.”

The past also haunts potential tourism. In the 1940s, the U.S. military used the Bikini and Enewetak atolls as nuclear testing sites , which led to displacement of residents and culture loss and rendered the islands uninhabitable. Residents around the RMI experienced a slew of health problems, including birth defects and cancer, and no one has been able to return to those atolls.

What’s it like traveling to the Marshall Islands?

It’s difficult and expensive for travelers to even get to the RMI, which is made up of 1,225 islands spanning more than 822,799 square miles .

Currently, there’s only one RMI-bound flight in the U.S.: the United Airlines “island hopper,” which departs from Honolulu and stops in Majuro and then Guam. The flight is scheduled only once a day, four days out of the week. A one-way ticket will typically cost over $1,000.

To improve accessibility, the RMI is trying to increase the number of flights to Majuro. Domnick is on the country’s aviation’s task force and has been in talks with airlines like Hawaiian Airlines and Fiji Airways to add more routes.

Once people get to Majuro, accommodations are in short supply – there are only three hotels. It’s a balancing act of marketing tourism and then having enough capacity to hold the tourists, Domnick said.

If you want to dive the RMI’s unspoiled coral reefs or surf its waves, you’ll need to find a way to get from Majuro to the outer atolls. Since the islands are so spread out, it can take days via boat or a short flight on the notoriously unreliable domestic airline Air Marshall Islands.

A 20-hour sail or 40-minute flight (that’ll cost you about $320 round trip ) from Majuro is Beran Island’s Daly’s Beran Island Surf Lodge, an all-inclusive sustainable luxury surf resort created by Australian boat captain and surfer Martin Daly. Experiencing those pristine waves won’t come cheap. The resort requires you and up to 15 of your closest friends to book the entire place for at least a week for a price tag of $50,000.

Unlike Beran Island, many of the outer atolls are too undeveloped to support tourism. Energy grids are considered unreliable and food resources are lacking. Just last month, the entire country finally got access to clean water with the help of outdoor company Sawyer’s water filters and the women-led nonprofit Kora in Okrane .

What does sustainable tourism look like in the RMI?

The island of Bokanbotin was passed down through the Tibon family. Sherwood Tibon and his wife, Emma Kabua-Tibon, who own a marine supply shop in Majuro, began to outfit their private land for personal use.

In June 2022, they opened Bokanbotin up to the public as an “island getaway” for picnics and camping. Travelers can reserve the solar-powered island on Airbnb for $250 a night for four guests as of July 31. For a more glamping experience, guests can stay in a small loft or, soon, an almost finished geodesic dome with an oceanfront patio.

Campers are told to bring their own food, but the Tibons provide tents, utensils, pots, rice cookers and an outdoor screen for movies. There’s Wi-Fi, too. The family will take all trash back to Majuro for disposal.

So far, most of the visitors to Bokanbotin are Marshall Islands expats from Australia or the U.S. The family hopes to market to more international travelers. “It’s different from other sites in Majuro,” Tibon said. “We think it’s unique, and we try to give it the wow factor so you say, ‘This is where I want to spend my day.’”

As for the threat of climate change, Tibon said he’s not too worried about his island because the trees that line the shoreline “act as our seawalls,” blocking damage from rising tides.

Eco-tourism boutique startups like Bokanbotin are exactly what the Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism wants to support.

Because not every family has the capital to start a business, the office is “seeing how we can provide an enabling environment for locals to be able to invest in tourism,” Domnick said. In 2021, the agency launched a program called Ao Kapijuknen (My Homeland) in partnership with the International Organization for Migration to train and fund women interested in starting up their own tourism business.

Another tourism opportunity is coming next year. For the first time, the Marshall Islands will host the 10th Micronesian Games , showcasing sports and cultural practices like coconut tree husking to beach volleyball. In Majuro, a track field is being built for the 2023 games, but construction has been delayed , pushing the event to 2024.

Domnick said the country is encouraging Majuro-based families to open up an empty room or guest house on Airbnb for the event.

I spent the afternoon at Bokanrotin eating lunch out on the pier before masking up and snorkeling around the protected marine area, catching glimpses of puffer fish and giant clams. Leaving the island at sunset, it’s easy to understand why the Tibon family would want to share their island home with others.

Air Vanuatu enters voluntary liquidation, leaving passengers stranded in Australia and Vanuatu

Airport workers load up an Air Vanuatu plane.

Air Vanuatu has entered voluntary liquidation and authorities are unable to say when flights will resume, leaving Australian travellers and ni-Vanuatu people stranded across the two countries.

Ernst & Young confirmed it took control of the airline after the Vanuatu government appointed it as voluntary liquidator of the company.

Air Vanuatu said on Thursday afternoon all international flights until Sunday were cancelled, and flights after that day were "under review".

Ernst & Young said it would conduct safety and maintenance checks before resuming normal operations.

"The liquidators intend to resume normal trading as soon as possible, while considering all opportunities to place the carrier on a stronger footing," Ernst & Young said in a statement.

"Affected travellers will be informed of this disruption and re-booked on flights as soon as operations resume.

"The existing management team will remain in place and will work closely with the liquidators through this process."

Uncertain time frame for return

Vanuatu's Finance Minister John Salong, whose role makes him a shareholder of Air Vanuatu, said no-one knows when the airline will resume its services.

"The first thing they have to do is, one, assure the employees that it's business as usual, so they can take care of the customers that are currently stranded and customers that have been making bookings," he said.

"The second thing is, of course, to look at ensuring that everything is safe, because we're talking about aircraft being in the air and safety has always been paramount for Air Vanuatu.

"The third thing is to deal with the suppliers so that we can have all the necessary processes in place so the business can run as per usual.

"So it may take a couple of weeks."

A small plane is loaded up on an outer island in Vanuatu.

Morgan Kelly, an Ernst & Young partner in turnaround and restructuring services, said the liquidators were working as quickly as possible so that passengers could get home.

"We have people who are stranded in all kinds of locations at the moment and also people who are stranded in Vanuatu trying to return home to their destinations," he said.

"At the moment we're working with all of our partner airlines, our codeshare airlines.

"And we're also working with other operators and the Vanuatu government agencies to try and come up with a solution as quickly as we can."

Vanuatu Tourism Office chief executive Adela Issachar Aru apologised to travellers affected by the flight cancellations.

She said the office was waiting for updated flight schedules from Air Vanuatu, and that these would be available soon.

'It's so shameful'

Ni-Vanuatu seasonal worker Gordon Kalotiti is stranded in Melbourne with more than 30 other workers, and is waiting to hear when they can return home.

The seasonal workers learnt of Air Vanuatu's flight cancellations at the city's airport on Thursday, after a long journey from regional Victoria.

"The weather is not really good … We must sleep around here, waiting for information," Mr Kalotiti said.

They were told to wait, and that they would be put on another flight home.

"The information that we have [is] the same information that we had yesterday. We are still waiting."

Mr Kalotiti said Air Vanuatu had a responsibility to find and pay for accommodation for the seasonal workers while they wait.

Men sit down and stand waiting at the airport.

"I came to Australia to work, and to take money back home. And it doesn't make sense to me that if we are stranded here, we will pay our own accommodation and food and other stuff.

"What I'm seeing is not fair."

He called on the Vanuatu government to fix the problems affecting Air Vanuatu.

"It's so shameful that we are here," he said.

'It's left people agitated'

Sally Witchalls, from Canberra, was due to fly out of Vanuatu's capital city Port Vila on Wednesday but learnt of the flight cancellations as she checked out of her hotel.

She is still waiting along with four other friends to hear about alternative flights home.

"We're in the dark here. There's very little communication from the airlines, from Air Vanuatu or any other carrier services they're linked with as well."

A palm tree and other green foliage with buildings, a bay and headland in the background.

She tried to book a flight departing later in the week, but it fell through.

"We're waiting and we're hoping and hopefully we'll get some information today."

Her travel insurers have told her she won't be covered in cases where the airline goes into liquidation, and she and her friends are working out how they will pay for some of their additional accommodation.

"It does leave you a little bit worried about what travel insurance is for," she said.

Ms Witchalls said some stranded passengers have looked for alternative routes home, including flying out to Fiji, to fly back into Australia with Fiji Airways.

She said there was anxiety among some stranded passengers waiting to hear when they could fly home.

"There's a lot of families here and a lot of people with differing levels of health and health needs as well," she said.

"It's left a lot of people agitated, concerned about when they're getting out and also looking for their needs going ahead for the next couple of days."

Air Vanuatu, which is owned by the Vanuatu government, has been grappling with issues affecting its services including flight delays and cancellations, and its Boeing 737 has been in maintenance for extended periods.

A spokesperson from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were "aware of reports that Air Vanuatu and its codeshare partners have cancelled or re-scheduled all flights over the coming days".

"Australians affected by the travel delays should contact their travel agent or travel insurance company," the spokesperson added.

RSA: Google Enhances its Enterprise SecOps Offerings With Gemini AI

Your email has been sent

Image of Megan Crouse

The RSA Conference, held in San Francisco from May 6-9, brings together cybersecurity professionals from across the world. This year’s conference is buzzing with conversation about generative AI : how to use generative AI to protect against attacks and how to secure generative AI itself.

We’re rounding up the enterprise business tech news from RSA that is most relevant for IT and tech decision-makers. This article will be updated throughout RSA with more tech news highlights.

Google updates Google Security Operations and more with Gemini AI

Google is combining the security capabilities of information security company Mandiant and malware scanner VirusTotal with Gemini AI and Google’s own user and device footprint in a new offering called Google Threat Intelligence. Available May 6 wherever Google Cloud Security is distributed , Google Threat Intelligence uses Gemini AI to get a top-down look at security data, competing with Microsoft’s Copilot for Security .

In addition, Google announced:

  • New curated detections for Google Security Operations that are designed to reduce manual processes and suggest outcomes relevant to the wider Google Cloud and updated to include recently-detected threats.
  • AI consulting services from Mandiant, which can red team both an organization’s AI defenses and how an organization’s security could be compromised by AI.
  • New services taking advantage of Gemini in Security .

Microsoft enhances Copilot for Security, Defender XDR, Sentinel and Purview

As part of RSA, Microsoft announced a variety of new tools and features for Microsoft Defender XDR, the security solution portal. Security researchers using Defender XDR can now:

  • See insider risk information.
  • Use native operational technology protection, which enables them to manage OT and industrial technology control system vulnerabilities right in Defender XDR.
  • Take advantage of new tools with AI for disrupting compromised users, including in cases where attackers have compromised an individual account using leaked credentials, credential stuffing or guessing.

Microsoft Purview can now spot vulnerable AI touchpoints

In Purview, the AI Hub is now available in preview. The AI Hub reveals which sensitive data might be shared with AI applications including Microsoft Copilot, highlighting possible risks. The AI Hub will also highlight whether your AI deployments are compliant with major regulations and standards such as the EU AI Act and NIST AI Risk Management Framework.

Sentinel SOC Optimizations suggest cost-saving measures and more

Microsoft Sentinel will now include SOC Optimizations, that guide security personnel through managing costs, increasing the value of data and improving defenses.

Integrations added to Microsoft’s Copilot for Security AI assistant

Microsoft Copilot for Security now integrates with Purview, Azure Firewall, Azure Web Application Firewall and select new partner plugins.

IBM and AWS research: Generative AI’s unpredictable risks worry the C-suite

IBM and AWS published a report during RSA on how executives are thinking about securing generative AI . The report found that fewer than a quarter (24%) of respondents said they are including security as part of their generative AI projects — possibly a sign that hyperscalers have a niche to step into as the business of securing AI projects becomes more mainstream.

Most respondents were concerned about generative AI’s effect on security, with 51% saying they were worried about unpredictable risks and new security vulnerabilities arising, and 47% watching out for new attacks targeting AI. IBM pitched its Framework for Securing Generative AI , which was released in January 2024, as a solution.

Risk and governance frameworks will be key to help secure generative AI, IBM and AWS found in the report. In addition, IBM is extending its X-Force Red testing services to AI, including generative AI applications, MLSecOps pipelines and AI models.

McAfee Deepfake Defender will flag fake videos

As Intel is making its Core Ultra PCs ready for onboard AI, McAfee has partnered with Intel to detect misinformation and deepfakes. Using the neural processing unit (also known as an AI accelerator), McAfee Deepfake Detector will flag photorealistic AI-generated videos.

Deepfake Detector was first revealed in January at CES . On May 6 at RSA , McAfee detailed that Deepfake Detector is expected “soon,” starting in English and expanding to other languages.

Proofpoint adds AI screening to email security products

At RSA, Proofpoint announced two novel email security services :

  • Pre-delivery semantic analysis, the large language model-based detection of social engineering emails to stop email fraud or malicious links before they reach Microsoft 365 and Google Workplace inboxes.
  • Adaptive Email Security, an Integrated Cloud Email Security solution with automatic quarantining and explanation of behavioral anomalies for high-value targets.

Both of these email security services are available May 6. Adaptive Email Security is available only on a rolling basis for select customers who already have standard email security packages and have identified high-risk employees.

Cisco and Splunk expand Cisco Hypershield

On May 6 at RSA, Cisco showed one of the first results of its March acquisition of Splunk. Cisco added two capabilities to its Cisco Hypershield data center and cloud security product, which can now:

  • Detect and block attacks from unknown vulnerabilities within runtime workload environments.
  • Isolate suspected workloads.

Cisco also announced that Cisco Identity Intelligence AI analytics are now available in the Cisco Duo security platform, adding specific tools to catch identity-based attacks.

Splunk announced on May 6 a new asset and risk intelligence solution called Asset and Risk Intelligence . Splunk Asset and Risk Intelligence is now in early access.
