The best romantic getaways in the U.S. for couples

Relax with your love on a romantic getaway in the U.S., from desert escapes to beach retreats

Clara Hogan

Couples who travel together are happier together. That claim may be an oversimplification, but it's safe to say that exploring the world, getting out of the daily routines and trying new things together are all effective at spurring romance and connection.

From your first romantic weekend trip away to your honeymoon or  babymoon  and the many anniversary vacations to come, taking trips as a couple is a surefire way to  keep the spark alive and form a deeper bond. And while a European voyage to Paris or Rome tops many people's bucket lists, you don't have to travel far to find romance.  Across the U.S., charming destinations await that will sweep your one and only off their feet.

Head to  California  to enjoy some of the country's best food and wine amid coastal scenery, embrace nature in the Colorado mountains or Arizona desert, or visit a charming East Coast town like Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, where you can stroll the historic streets and stay in a cozy inn. Whatever you choose, our list of the most romantic getaways in the USA boasts stunning landscapes, plenty of ways to be pampered, and some of the most romantic hotels in America .

Best romantic getaways in the U.S.

Sonoma County, CA

1.  Sonoma County, CA

It’s easy to swoon over Sonoma . While wine tasting is the main attraction, there's so much more to this sprawling California county. Get pampered at world-class spas (head to  Dawn Ranch  for an oasis set among the redwoods); dine your heart out at restaurants rooted in seasonal California fare (snag a seat at Healdbsurg's buzziest new opening,  Goodnight’s Prime Steak + Spirits ); or head to the coast to take in stunning ocean views at boutique hotels like  Nick's Cove  or  Timber Cove (grab a bite at their waterfront restaurants or stay the night).

Scottsdale, AZ

2.  Scottsdale, AZ

Set amid the stunning Sonoran desert, the backdrop to a vacation in Scottsdale  easily checks the romantic box. This Arizona town has long been a destination for those looking to be pampered and relax—and in recent years, has experienced a renewed sense of interest from travelers thanks to buzzy restaurants (check out FnB Restaurant and Fat Ox ), a myriad of wellness experiences, and even an up-and-coming wine scene (don't skip  Aridus Winery 's tasting room in Old Town). Couples looking for an urban retreat will enjoy a stay at the midcentury marvel that is the  Hotel Valley Ho , and for those looking to escape reality in a more remote setting, don't miss the luxurious  Sanctuary Camelback Mountain (Jay Z and Beyoncé honeymooned here, if that tells you anything.)

Kauai, HI

3.  Kauai, HI

If your version of paradise includes rugged cliffs and sunny sand, emerald hills and epic hikes, fire up your laptop and book a trip to  Kauai . The 'Garden Isle' is a verdant wonderland where you can take a helicopter ride past the Jurassic Park waterfall, kayak Hawaii's only navigable river or walk the wild Na Pali Coast—though no one will blame you for kicking back with a cocktail on the beach. For an indulgent stay, book a room at the brand-new sustainable luxury resort,  1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

Savannah, GA

4.  Savannah, GA

Savannah  wears its charm in the open: classic homes, historic squares and impossibly photogenic moss-covered trees. But there's more to this Southern belle than gawking at her sights. Go for a stroll on Tybee Island , then dig into expertly crafted Cajun and low-country cooking at Alligator Soul (where, yes, there's gator on the menu). Finish things off at Lulu's Chocolate Bar and share a slice of the rum-brushed strawberry suspension cake.

San Juan Islands, WA

5.  San Juan Islands, WA

This Puget Sound escape—where the most populated town is just one square mile—is about escaping it all. Life on the San Juan Islands  means lighthouse strolls, coastal kayaking, visits to alpaca or lavender farms, and fresh seafood. Book a summer whale watch session and spot one of three local orca pods before bed at the Bird Rock Hotel , where loaner bikes let you explore at the right pace.

The Berkshires, MA

6.  The Berkshires, MA

The Berkshires aren't just one town but a collection of several that are quaint and charming in their way. Start with Lenox, a scenic and lush town once the home of writer Edith Wharton, and Stockbridge, a town bursting with Norman Rockwell-inspired streets. There’s also North Adams, replete with picturesque churches, and Williamstown, surrounded by mountains and farmland. Stroll together hand-in-hand along the historic downtown streets, hit a hiking trail, and relax together in a B&B: there's romance here no matter where your days (and nights) take you.

Sun Valley, ID

7.  Sun Valley, ID

No matter the time of year, the Sun Valley , Idaho region, is a perfect choice for a little romance. In the winter, ski during the day and get cozy at night; in the spring and summer, take in wildflower and waterful hikes; and when autumn rolls in, take in some of the most stunning foliage views in the country. Stay at the historic Sun Valley Resort  or the neighboring town, Ketchum, at the LimeLight Ketchum, which features a year-round heated pool and mountain views that set the mood.

New Paltz, NY

8.  New Paltz, NY

Mohonk Mountain House  in New Paltz, NY, is a gorgeous retreat two hours from NYC that dates back to 1869. Since then, Mohonk has grown enormously, evident in the varying styles of the main building as well as through the scattered wooden “summer houses” that dot the landscape. Head here for romantic Victorian rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, outstanding views from surrounding trails, live music, and events. The resort hosts occasional "Romantic Couples' Weekends" with love-themed activities for you and your beau.

New Orleans

9.  New Orleans

There's something magical about New Orleans —the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter, the 100+-year-old candlelit restaurants, the live music wafting through the air. Look past the rowdiness of Bourbon Street, and you'll find a city ripe for romance: stroll past historic mansions in the Garden District, get a cocktail at the Carousel Bar , and unwind at a luxurious hotel like the Eliza Jane .

Aspen, CO

10.  Aspen, CO

There’s no wrong time to book a trip to Aspen , a Rocky Mountain town where romantic enticements beckon all year long. From luxury hotels and sophisticated dining to hot air ballooning and legendary slopes, there’s a reason Aspen has a reputation for over-the-top thrills. Whether you’re here to ski with your partner, take on some rapids, or settle into a couple’s massage at the extravagant St. Regis (don’t miss the hotel's nightly champagne sabering, either), you’ll leave Aspen more in love than ever.

Glacier National Park, MT

11.  Glacier National Park, MT

With mountain lakes surrounded by rocky peaks, 600ft waterfalls and glaciers (expected to melt in the next 30 years), Glacier National Park deserves a place on your to-do list. Hike, horseback ride, hop a boat, spot a grizzly bear or mountain goat, and then cozy up over a fire or hearty meal. Given the range of accommodations offered—from lodges to campsites to backcountry chalets well worth the walk—this is the ideal destination to combine adventure and affection.

New York, NY

12.  New York, NY

With its relentless bustle, New York romance is about connecting with your partner amid the chaos. Go classic: Rent a rowboat in Central Park and get gussied up for dinner at La Grenouille , serving time-honored French delicacies in a flower-arrangement-filled space. Or throw tradition to the wind: Get into frisky business at the Museum of Sex or take the tram to Roosevelt Island for lofty, 360-degree city views.

Nantucket, MA

13.  Nantucket, MA

Nantucket is the perfect setting for a romance novel—or real-life romance. With white-sand beaches, cobblestone streets and New England charm everywhere you look, this tiny island (which is only 14 miles in length) is the perfect place to get away if you're looking for seaside splendor. Splurge on luxury accommodations (there are plenty to choose from, but we recommend the Wauwinet ), have a picnic on the beach or slide into a booth at a historic restaurant, or bike around the island. The high season is Memorial Day through Labor Day, but the shoulder months can be just as lovely without the crowds.

Big Sur, CA

14.  Big Sur, CA

With rolling redwood forests and cliffs jutting over turquoise water, Big Sur  is idyllic in the extreme. Splurge at the Post Ranch Inn , where your luxury bungalow is TV- and telephone-free, or snuggle up inside a yurt at Treebones . Come during the summer when you can kayak with sea otters, take a moonlit tour of the Point Sur lighthouse or stay up late for a dip in the Esalen Hot Springs .

Harpers Ferry, WV

15.  Harpers Ferry, WV

Although Harpers Ferry played a role in igniting the Civil War, today's vibe is far more romantic than revolutionary. The core of Harpers Ferry—which sits at the edge of the Shenandoah River, the Potomac River, and the Blue Ridge Mountains—is a national historic park with forts, museums, cobbled streets, and charm aplenty. You’ll also find 22 miles of hiking trails outside the city center, and in the warmer months, the town is an ideal launch point for kayaking, whitewater rafting, and tubing. It won't take long to understand why locals call West Virginia 'almost heaven.'

Martha’s Vineyard, MA

16.  Martha’s Vineyard, MA

The Obamas' go-to summer getaway, Martha's Vineyard has always charmed visitors with its windswept beaches and sweet towns. Rent a home or base yourself at Hob Knob in Edgartown, the island’s picture-perfect, oldest settlement with narrow streets, red-brick pavements and white clapboard homes. Hit the beach, browse local shops, marvel over the sunset and stuff yourself with fresh seafood—it’s not a Vineyard visit without lobster from Larsen’s Fish Market .

Mackinac Island, MI

17.  Mackinac Island, MI

Nothing beats Michigan in the summer—the crystal blue water, perfect weather, and friendly people. One of the most quaint spots in the state is  Mackinac Island , situated on Lake Huron between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. With stunning national parks, car-free streets, charming B&Bs, and plenty of outdoor activities, this is a place where you can lazily enjoy the island life or be active from sunrise to sunset.

Charleston, SC

18.  Charleston, SC

This picturesque Southern city doesn’t just feel like a romantic movie set; Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook was actually filmed around Charleston . Turn it into the background of your love story as you roam the historic district, explore the vibrant dining scene and wander through the gardens at Boone Hall .

Block Island, RI

19.  Block Island, RI

Dubbed 'Island of the Little God' by the Narragansett tribe, this petite isle 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island is a world apart from the mainland. Rent a bike or moped, grab a sandwich from Three Sisters and start discovering your favorite beach or scenic trail.

Sedona, AZ

20.  Sedona, AZ

Free your spiritual side in Sedona , a desert enclave where natural vortexes emit mystical energy. Even if communing with the Earth isn't your thing, visiting for the spectacular slot-canyon hiking and world-class accommodations is worth it. Spoil yourself in a L'Auberge de Sedona cottage complete with an outdoor shower or stay at Enchantment Resort and book a couple’s treatment at the acclaimed Mii Amo spa .

San Diego, CA

21.  San Diego, CA

With 322 days of annual sunshine, San Diego begs you to get outside and explore. Hit the waves at Pacific Beach, ride bikes along the boardwalk, charter a boat or grab a patch of sand and snuggle up with your partner. The zoo is rightfully renowned and, when you've worked up an appetite , head to the Marine Room for dinner at high tide when the Pacific crashes against the windows.

Amelia Island, FL

22.  Amelia Island, FL

Barely inside the Florida border, this Atlantic Coast barrier island hits the spot for a luxury weekend or low-key retreat. Book a room at a historic B&B or bed down overlooking the beach at the Ritz-Carlton . Then, spend your days soaking up the sun, riding horses along the shoreline or on the water on a fishing charter or sightseeing tour. Keep the camera ready for sea turtles, manatees and dolphins.

50 Best Romantic Getaways for a Couples Trip

Whether you're celebrating your honeymoon or just looking to escape with your partner, these are the 50 most romantic getaways around the world.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel+Leisure

What's your idea of a perfect romantic getaway? For some couples, it's all about relaxing on a beach somewhere tropical and sunny, while others prefer a new adventure in an exciting, fast-paced destination. Whatever your travel style, we've got you covered with our list of romantic destinations in the United States and around the world.

From ski resorts in Colorado to the wildlife-rich Galápagos Islands to the rolling hills of Tuscany, these are 50 of the most romantic getaways around the world.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Wander through the green rolling hills and sheep pastures, and take in the history in this beautiful country. Try taking a hike up to Arthur's Seat for sweeping views, check out Edinburgh's Old Town for quaint architecture and fun museums (such as the Writers' Museum), and wander down the Royal Mile to take in street performers. Be sure to stop at a whiskey distillery for a sip or two — try Highland Park or Old Pulteney — and consider staying at Gleneagles Hotel, which sits on a 850-acre estate and has its own train station.

British Virgin Islands

Have a relaxing, sunny beach vacation in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Play in the water and lounge on the sand at some of the most beautiful beaches — visit Cane Garden Bay Beach or Smuggler's Cove Beach for fewer crowds and more privacy. Also try swimming and snorkeling in Spring Bay, sailing to Anegada Island. Check out Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, which sits on its own 230-acre private island at the east end of Tortola. It has 52 guest accommodations, plus two-, three-, four- and six-bedroom villas, a spa, restaurants, two private beaches, and a 55-slip marina.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

This resort city on the Pacific coast of Acapulco has picturesque beaches — visit Playa La Ropa or Playa Blanca for great snorkeling. It also has a quaint town with windy roads lined with galleries and restaurants to explore — be sure to check out La Cucaracha Gallery, Suazo Art Gallery, or Artemayren Studio y Galería for local art and Rufos Grill, Restaurante Las Adelitas, or Restaurantes Mexicanos Any for local food. For the ultimate romantic trip, you can stay in La Casa Que Canta, which was featured in the movie "When a Man Loves a Woman." The grounds have terracotta villas sculpted into the hillside with secluded suites.

Palm Springs, California

For a trip that feels like you are really getting away without actually having to go too far, check out Palm Springs for its hiking, gondola rides, golf, and warm desert air. Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — the world's largest rotating tram car — to travel 2.5 miles up to the top of Chino Canyon, where you can wander around and explore. Relax together at Estrella Spa or Azure Spa Palm Springs, where you can get desert-inspired treatments.

Whidbey Island, Washington

This island in the Pacific Northwest is a quick trip from Seattle, and it offers stunningly beautiful views for the minimal effort involved in getting there. There are quaint hotels with modern amenities, such as the Inn at Langley, with hot tubs and views of the Saratoga Passage waterway. You can explore the shops in town or hike along the coastal bluffs, maybe catching a sight of gray whales if the season is right.

Idyllwild, California

This rustic mountain town is perfect for exploring with someone you love, or for a first trip together as a couple. Stay in a small wooded cabin and then spend your time exploring the shops in town, stocking up on homemade jams or leather hats. Try hiking the Ernie Maxwell trail for beautiful views, and if you are in town on a Saturday, head to the town square to meet the mayor (he's a golden retriever named Max). For dinner, sit on the patio in the mountain air at Gastrognome or Idyology.

Explore the wide-open plains and enjoy the breathtaking night skies in Montana. While on your trip, stay at a guest ranch where you can experience outdoor activities, such as Flathead Lake Lodge, a family-owned and operated guest ranch. Or stay at Snow Bear Chalets, which are ski-in/ski-out treehouses located slopeside at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, Montana.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz is a romantic and often-overlooked destination located on the Sea of Cortez, which is known as the world's richest body of water. French explorer Jacques Cousteau famously named it the "aquarium of the world." Today, you can try diving, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, and island hopping there. For romantic outdoor dining, try Las Tres Virgenes, Sorstis Restaurante, or Nim, or the more casual Il Rustico.

Experience the Reno side of the Lake Tahoe area for outdoorsy activities and intimate restaurants and hotels. Check out the Spa at Silver Legacy or the multitude of hot springs in the area for a relaxing day of romance. There's also the Riverwalk and Midtown District to explore. Opt to stay in the Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge , which sits lakeside with its own private beach, or the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe , where the concierge service can arrange a day of adventure on the mountain, a round of golf, or sailing on Lake Tahoe.

Dana Point, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

This lesser-known beach town is perfect for couples, and it gets you away from the more crowded California beach spots. Do some people-watching or swimming at Salt Creek Beach or Doheny State Beach, or try walking along Bluff Top Trail. For seafood with a view, try dining at Chart House or Wind & Sea. If you are looking for a place to say, the town's resorts have ocean views and spa treatments. Consider whale watching or taking a cruise on the Dana Wharf Sunset Wine Cruise during your visit, too.

Sonoma Valley, California

What better way to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, or other special romantic occasion than with wine in this scenic part of California. There are more than 400 wineries to visit in this region. For wineries with beautiful views, check out Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves or Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery in Dry Creek Valley. Then dine at some of the country's most romantic restaurants, including LaSalette, Valette, or The Girl & The Fig. Take a wine tour through the valley, take a walk through some of the state's earliest vineyards, or bike along scenic roads with the person you love for an unforgettable trip.

Chassignolles, France

This village in the Livradois-Forez, France's largest national park, is secluded and rural — perfect for couples looking to get away from it all. You can check out the local farms and wander among the country lanes. Auberge de Chassignolles is the only accommodation in town, with nine rooms situated next to the village's 12th-century church.

Wake up early to drive up to Cadillac Mountain and witness the sunrise, followed by an invigorating hike or a leisurely drive along the coast in Acadia National Park. Make sure to pack a picnic basket and enjoy lunch on a beach. Spend the evening relaxing in Agamont Park , strolling along the banks of the bay, or going on a whale watching cruise on the beautiful Frenchman Bay .

The Saltair Inn Waterfront B&B is a particularly charming accommodation on Bar Harbor's Mount Desert Island . It boasts fabulous views, attentive service, and an overtly amorous air.

Bourbon Street, New Orleans, Louisiana

In terms of finding a top vacation spot for couples in the southern US, New Orleans is about as romantic (and exciting) as they come. Live music enchants loved-up wanderers, while the tempting scent of Cajun cuisine wafts down the city's most vibrant streets.

Spend your days visiting the top tourist attractions in New Orleans . These include The French Quarter (don't miss Bourbon Street ), National WWII Museum , and Jackson Square .

In terms of the best time to visit New Orleans, that depends on what you're looking for in a couples' vacation. No matter when you visit, you'll be serenaded, entertained, and well-fed, but if you're hoping to experience the famed Mardi Gras festivities , book your trip between February and May.

There are plenty of fabulous resorts to choose from in town. As you've already learned, the French Quarter is where it's at, so choosing a hotel in that section is extremely convenient if you're hoping to explore the area by foot. Aim for all-out luxury with a stay in the Maison de la Luz .

Sedona, Arizona

Get back to nature, and each other, in the great red sandstone rocks of Sedona, which is one of the most charming small towns in Arizona. A landscape as inspiring as your love story, this natural wonderland is a haven for romance.

Deep canyons, breathtaking views, and a spiritual nature make this one of the best vacation spots for couples in the US. An easy day trip from Phoenix , Sedona is both romantic and intriguing, two attributes that make visitors want to return.

The area's top tourist attractions include Cathedral Rock , Sedona's most photographed attraction, as well as the old town (a.k.a. Uptown Sedona ), the stunning Red Rock Scenic Byway , and Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive . Love to golf together? You're in luck. Sedona is known for its fab golf resorts and gorgeous courses.

Be sure to pack good hiking shoes and a backpack to carry snacks and water, as you'll want to spend the majority of your time hiking the trails and biking the mountain pathways .

You'll be more than happy to fall into a plush bed at the end of the day and, luckily, Sedona's best resorts won't disappoint. That said, if you're so in love with the landscape, which is easy to understand, there are plenty of stellar campgrounds on offer.

Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach

If you've never heard of Cannon Beach, consider this your lucky day. Best known for its towering 235-foot-tall Haystack Rock , this stunning beach is so unique and wonderful, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're on an island in French Polynesia. Not surprisingly, this rock is one of the best attractions on the Oregon Coast , and visiting Cannon Beach is one of the top things to do in Oregon .

Heading the list of the best beaches on the Oregon Coast , Cannon Beach is a gem worthy of a 1,000 photographs. It lies on the coastal edge of the small Oregon town of the same name, an easy, two-hour drive from the attractions of Portland . Here, you'll find cute arcades, candy shops, a glassworks store, and themed restaurants.

The best time to visit Cannon Beach is during low tide, when a whole new world comes to life—literally. This is when the rock pools emerge, and visitors are left to examine the unique and colorful creatures left behind by the waves. There are plenty of places to stay here, so be prepared to spend the night.

Things To Do In Kansas City For Couples

Kansas City is not just a place for delicious BBQ but also a playground for couples seeking some fun and romance. Keep reading to learn more.

1. Visit a drive-in movie theatre

tourist place for couples near me

Not too long ago, drive-ins were  the  place to be on date night. With only about 300 drive-in theaters still in operation, Kansas City is lucky enough to have two nearby. Tap into your dating nostalgia, grab some popcorn, and see a movie under the stars. So romantic!

  • B&B Twin Drive-In Theatre (Independence, MO): Admission is $22 per carload for the double feature (credit and debit cards only). Purchase your tickets online here . The drive-in is open 7 days a week from March to October.
  • Boulevard Drive-In Theatre (Kansas City, KS): Admission is $15 per person (CASH ONLY) for the double feature. Tune into 89.7FM on your car stereo and listen to the movie from inside your vehicle or bring your lawn chairs and listen to the pole speakers. The drive-in is open on Fridays & Saturdays from April to September.

2. See a performance at the Kauffman Center

Kauffman Performing Arts Center in Kansas City is a great place to have your next date. You can see the Kansas City orchestra play, watch a live performance by musicians or comedian, and many others.

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts hosts a variety of performances throughout the year. Whether you’re interested in ballet, opera, or theater, it definitely makes for one of the top date ideas in Kansas City for couples.

For a fun and memorable performance, I recommend seeing the Kansas City Symphony perform iconic scores from your favorite movies (e.g., Star Wars and Harry Potter) as you watch the film in unison.

3. Listen to live jazz at Lonnie’s Reno Club

Rated the #1 most entertaining show in Kansas City, enjoy an upscale dining experience while listening to the infamous Ronnie McFadden play classic Kansas City jazz music.

Located in the Ambassador Hotel in downtown KC, this jazz club is a hidden gem in the city and a perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion. It’s one of my top picks for a date night in Kansas City. Note: Lonnie only performs on Fridays and Saturdays so be sure to plan accordingly. Reserve your table at Lonnie’s Reno Club here .

Other recommend spots to listen to jazz music in the city:

  • Green Lady Lounge
  • Black Dolphin
  • The Blue Room
  • The Majestic Restaurant
  • The Phoenix (Sunday brunch)
  • Hey! Hey! Club at J. Rieger & Co (Thursdays)
  • Westport Coffeehouse
  • Mutual Musicians Foundation (live jazz Fri & Sat after 1:30 am)

4. Enjoy food & beer pairings at Boulevard Brewing Company

Book the Smokestack Tour & Tasting and enjoy a two-hour Boulevard experience including a brewery tour plus four bites expertly paired with the perfect BLVD beers. For visitors on a day trip to Kansas City , I always suggest including a visit to Boulevard Brewing.

As a bonus, the guides are super knowledgeable and hugely entertaining! Tours are available from Monday to Thursday for adults aged 21+ at $40 per person.

5. Attend a sports event

A Kansas City Chiefs branded football laying on the grass, with the arrowhead KC logo showing.

A four-sport city, Kansas City is home to several major professional teams including the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, Sporting KC, and KC Current.

Fun fact: Kansas City Current’s new CPKC Stadium at Berkley Riverfront Park is the first in the US built specifically for a professional women’s soccer team.

The city has so much pride in its sports teams and the electric atmosphere at the games reflects that — Arrowhead Stadium holds the record for the loudest outdoor open-air stadium after all! Add a tailgate party (be sure to check out Chiefs Lot J Tailgating Crew ) before the game and you will have a fun date to remember.

P.S. Kansas City also has tons of Chiefs murals for a cute couple’s photo!

6. Explore Union Station

One of Kansas City’s most iconic landmarks, Union Station has been transformed into a cultural hub and features many exhibits, restaurants, and shops.

Take a tour of the station, watch a show at the planetarium, catch a film at their movie theater, test your skills at an escape room, visit world-class touring exhibitions (like our personal favorite, Auschwitz: Not long ago, Not far away .), or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. You could easily spend the whole day here!

Pro Tip: End the night by grabbing a drink at the Conductor Club . It’s a new rotating-themed cocktail bar tucked away in a hidden corner of the historic Union Station and one you don’t want to miss. Be sure to make reservations in advance!

7. Chow down on Kansas City-style barbecue

“Kansas City” and “barbecue” go together like two peas in a pod. With over 100 barbecue restaurants in the KC metro area, you’ll be sure to find something to tickle your barbecue fancy. For a date night, I would recommend Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que (located inside a gas station), Q39 , or a relative newcomer, Chef J BBQ .

8. Watch an innovative performance by Quixotic

Terra Luna by Quixotic at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

Quixotic  is an event entertainment company that fuses imagination with technology to create a fully immersive, multi-sensory experience.

The performance group, branded an “innovative circus ensemble” by The New York Times, provides you with a Cirque du Soleil-style show mixed with a Kansas City flavor. It’s another one of my top picks for a date night in KC! Click here to find an upcoming show.

In mid-September every year, you also have the opportunity to experience Terra Luna by Quixotic at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Instead of viewing the performance group on a stage, here you get up close and personal with the dancers, musicians, and aerial acrobats as you stroll through the garden.

If you’re reading this in October and feeling like you missed out on the event mentioned above, don’t worry. Quixotic presents a similar immersive multimedia walk-through installation in the woods known as Dark Forest at Powell Gardens, offered during the final three weekends of October .

9. Wine tasting

Wine tasting - one of the top things to do in Kansas City for couples

Kansas City is home to some of the best wineries in the region, and what better way to spend a romantic afternoon than by sampling some wine with your significant other? Here are some of my personal favorites:

Amigoni Urban Winery , located in the historic Daily Drover Telegram building, offers a beautiful and intimate setting that is perfect for couples. You can enjoy a variety of wine flights while pairing it with a delicious cheese board.

KC Wine Co is a boutique winery located in Olathe, Kansas, and always keeps a packed calendar. Here you can enjoy live music, food trucks, wine slushies, music bingo, and dog-friendly events.

Jowler Creek Vineyard and Winery , located just 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City, is a family-owned winery that offers a unique and eco-friendly experience. You can take a tour of the vineyard before settling in for a wine tasting on the patio.

If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, head to the Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery . This winery is located in the rolling hills of Miami County and offers stunning countryside views and live music.

10. Grab a drink under the stars at The Mercury Room

The Mercury Room located in the Crossroads.

Delicious cocktails, sweeping views of downtown, and thousands of LED lights twinkling above you set the stage for the perfect romantic date night setting. A swanky bar located in the Crossroads, The Mercury Room makes you feel like you’ve stepped inside an exclusive club in the city. With just twenty-eight seats inside, I would highly recommend making reservations to reserve your spot.

11. Dance the night away at Guitars & Cadillacs

Yee-haw, y’all! This KC original live country music venue and dance hall is the perfect place to let loose and soak up your favorite tunes! Don’t worry, you do not have to be a professional two-stepper to have a good time (there’s no judgment here). Note: Expect to pay a $5 cover charge 6-9 p.m. and $10 9 p.m. to close on Friday and Saturday.

12. Play pickleball at Chicken N Pickle

SERV pickleball courts in Overland Park, KS

It’s no secret that pickleball has taken the U.S. by storm. Enjoy some friendly competition with your partner to see who will earn bragging rights. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Kansas City for couples and also makes for a good double-date spot!

Afterward, enjoy some tasty food and beverages at the “chicken” portion of Chicken N Pickle. You’ve earned it! Note: SERV recently opened in Overland Park and is another great spot to play pickleball with 6 indoor courts and 2 outdoor courts.

13. Roll the dice: casino date

Enjoy one of several casinos in Kansas City, from Argosy Casino to my personal favorite, Ameristar Casino. Whether you hit the jackpot or have a few laughs at the slot machines, a date at a casino provides an atmosphere filled with entertainment. P.S. You can even make a whole night out of it and stay at one of the casino hotels nearby (not advised if this is your first date 😉).

14. Art-themed mini golf

Enjoy an art-themed mini golf on your next date in Kansas City.

Head over to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and enjoy a date that will be sure to satisfy you both. This 9-hole course presents a creative interpretation of a work of art in the museum’s collection.

There’s even a snack bar nearby that sells local favorites like Betty Rae’s ice cream and beer from Martin City Brewery that you can take with you and enjoy on the course. Art course pricing is $18 for adults and $14 for museum members. All tickets include access to the museum. Ready to play? Book your tee time here .

15. Take a dip at Shawnee Mission Park Beach

Shawnee Mission Park Beach was named the best beach in Kansas by Money Magazine. The beach opened in 2018 boasting a sizable lakefront swimming area as well as a sand volleyball court, shaded concession area, and restroom facilities.

Daily fees for Johnson County residents are $6 and $8 for non-residents. So what are you waiting for? Pack your chairs, umbrellas, and food (no alcohol allowed), and enjoy a day at the beach with your loved one!

Bar-K in North Kansas City near the riverfront. Makes for a great place to have a date!

Want to bring your dog(s) along on your date? This place is for you! Bar K features a fully-staffed dog park and a modern bar/restaurant inside. A Guest Pass is $10 for your first dog on weekdays and $15 on Saturdays & Sundays. Or you can purchase a membership that gives you and your pup unlimited access to Bar K during open hours. You can find more information about membership  here .

17. Watch a play in the park

Each summer, The Theatre in the Park (7710 Renner Road) presents five popular Broadway-style musicals at their outdoor amphitheater for an affordable price. The cast features actors from surrounding neighborhoods and is a much-loved community tradition.

Pro Tip: For an extra $10, you can leave your lawn chair at home and book one of their 80 reserved chairs. Reserved chairs can be purchased online in advance (recommended) or if available, by visiting the box office.

The Starlight Theatre presents another great opportunity for those interested in Broadway shows. This historic landmark accommodates around 8,000 seats and offers timeless favorites like The Wizard of Oz and modern sensations like Legally Blonde.

18 . Go ziplining at Zip KC

Zip KC Adventure Park

Tired of the regular dinner-and-a-movie date routine? Here’s a unique date idea for adventure lovers and thrill seekers. Zip KC Adventure Park features over 9 zip lines, a suspension bridge, and a rappel tower.

Zip through the glowing trees and touch down to the earth at dusk on the Sunset Date Night Tour or book the Night Flight Tower Tour for the ultimate glow-in-the-dark adrenaline experience. It’s a great way to test your bravery and have fun together!

19. Engage in friendly competition at Top Golf

This year-round crowd-pleaser in Overland Park includes over 100 climate-controlled hitting bays, games, a full-service bar and restaurant, and a rooftop beer garden. Whether you own your own set of golf clubs or have never stepped foot on a golf course, Top Golf makes for a fun date idea in Kansas City!

20. Tap into your inner child at Up-Down

Up Down in Crossroads Arts District (Kansas City, MO)

Up-Down KC is a 21+ arcade bar featuring more than 50 arcade games from the ’80s and ’90s, pinball machines, four classic skeeball alleys, Nintendo 64 console gaming, life-size Jenga, and Connect Four. All games cost just 25 cents. The bar also has a rooftop patio that’s perfect for enjoying a drink with your date.

21. Have a picnic in the park

Enjoy a picnic on the Liberty Memorial or Nelson-Atkins lawn for a date.

Spring has sprung and there’s no better way to enjoy the beautiful weather in Kansas City than to have a picnic date at one of these popular spots: Liberty Memorial or The Nelson-Atkins Lawn . Or if you’re looking for something a little more secluded, head to Loose Park . The park features a beautiful rose garden and a tranquil pond, making it the perfect place to enjoy a romantic picnic.

If you want the ultimate luxury picnic experience, book Pop Up Picnics KC who will take care of all of the details for you—provide food (small snacks), set up, and service—so you both can sit back and relax. Farmer's market - great day date idea for couples

Change things up with a fun daytime date activity – complete with delicious local food. Stroll past the different vendors and sample homemade jams and baked goods, and maybe even round up some local ingredients before heading home to make brunch together or take it to a nearby park for a picnic. See below for my recommendations for the best farmer’s markets in the Kansas City metro area:

Located in the historic River Market neighborhood, City Market offers fresh produce, local goods, and an array of spices. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. all year round (only Saturdays from January to March) and is conveniently located on the KC Streetcar route.

Take a leisurely stroll through the museum’s many galleries and admire the impressive collection that spans thousands of years. Non-members need to reserve free tickets in order to visit anywhere within the museum.

Another great museum that is free to visit is the Kansas City Museum which has been recently restored and renovated with all new history and humanities-based exhibits, installations, and amenities. Note: The museum is closed Monday-Wednesday.

24. Experience “First Fridays”

On the First Friday of every month of the year, the Crossroads Art District and West Bottoms transform into one big block party. It’s basically a holiday in Kansas City! You can enjoy live entertainment, visit art galleries, and explore the local shops.

Street parking can be limited during First Fridays, but there are alternative options such as parking at the TWA Building (1740 Main) or in the Arts District Garage next to the Kauffman Center. Private lots are also available for around $5. Another great option is the KC Streetcar, which conveniently drops you off in the heart of the action and is completely free to use!

25. Sunday bingo at Boulevard Brewing Co.

Sunday bingo at Boulevard Brewery in Kansas City, MO. Doors open at 10am and the first game of bingo starts at 11am CST.

This isn’t your grandma’s Bingo game – Boulevard hosts a weekly Sunday Bingo free of charge and gives out fun prizes such as koozies, beer, and free drink coupons. Space is limited and all guests over the age of 3 need a “ticket” to enter.

I would recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the start time (11 a.m.) as it can get quite busy. Might I also suggest getting the Tank 7 mimosa and the much-loved biscuits and gravy while you’re there. YUM! Visit their website to reserve your spot.

Each class costs $100 which includes clay, glazes, and firing for two people. Space is limited, so you must register at least 72 hours in advance.

27. Axe-throwing fun for two

If you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy a fun date night, there are many options in Kansas City. Take advantage of the many free events in the area, including the First Friday Art Walk in the Crossroads Arts District and the City Market Farmers’ Market, and for art lovers, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art are both free to visit.

Is it worth visiting Kansas City?

Absolutely! Kansas City is a hidden gem in the heart of the Midwest, with a wealth of attractions and activities that are sure to keep visitors entertained. Whether you’re interested in art, history, food, or outdoor recreation, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant and exciting city. I’ve lived here since 2017 and am still finding new things to do and explore.

What to do in Kansas City on a honeymoon?

When it comes to accommodations, Kansas City has plenty of options for couples. For first-time visitors, I would recommend staying at The Raphael Hotel , Ambassador Hotel , Crossroads Hotel , or Hotel Kansas City . If you want a truly unique experience, stay at one of these beautifully decorated boutique hotels: The Truitt , Oak Street Mansion , or No Vacancy Hotel .

During the day, explore Kansas City’s thriving arts scene at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art or the galleries and studios within the Crossroads Arts District. Or sip on award-winning wines at the local winery, Amigoni Urban Winery .

After a busy day of sightseeing and exploring, unwind with a spa treatment. A spot I would also HIGHLY recommend is my personal favorite, Milagro Midwestern Spa . This luxurious spa specializes in signature spa therapies and massage. The service menu is limited to solo massage (no couples massage), but they have several staff members working at once so you can book an appointment for the same time slot.

For cozy dinner spots, I would recommend Le Fou Frog , Corvino Supper Club , Fox & Pearl , The Town Company , or Stock Hill . Or, if you are craving Mexican food, take a peek at my guide for the best Mexican restaurants in KC .

Kansas City also has a vibrant nightlife scene that is perfect for couples who love to dance, enjoy live music, or sip craft cocktails. One of the most popular spots in the city is Green Lady Lounge . This jazz club features live music every night of the week and offers a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Black Dolphin located right next door is another great spot to listen to live jazz.

What is the best month to visit Kansas City ?

Kansas City is a great destination to visit year-round—though I would personally skip January and February due to the cold winter days—but the best time to go depends on what you’re interested in seeing and doing. If you’re a fan of outdoor activities, the spring and fall are ideal times to visit. The weather is mild, and there are plenty of parks and outdoor spaces to explore.

If you’re interested in seeing some of the city’s festivals and events, the summer is a great time to visit. The city hosts a variety of events throughout the summer, including Boulevardia, KC BBQ Fest, and the Kansas City Irish Fest.

Final Thoughts: Things To Do In Kansas City For Couples

As someone who has planned many dates for my husband and me to enjoy in Kansas City, I can confidently say that this city offers the perfect blend of romance and excitement.

Whether you’re a local looking to rekindle the flame or a visitor seeking a unique adventure, KC has a way of bringing couples closer together and creating unforgettable memories. So, embark on your own journey, and let the magic of Kansas City ignite the sparks of love and laughter in your relationship.

8 most STUNNING night walks in Moscow (PHOTOS)

Zaryadye Park.

Zaryadye Park.

1. Park Sveta (Park of Lights)

tourist place for couples near me

The new park in the Bibirevo district, in the north-east, opened in 2019. It’s as if it was designed especially for night walks. After sunset, the park comes alive with an unusual fluid light display on swings, arches, walkways - basically everywhere, turning an ordinary park into an enchanted forest. Backlit sphere, star and cylinder-shaped benches can also be seen everywhere in the park.

2. Lianozovo Promenade

tourist place for couples near me

Another cozy park in one of Moscow’s northern ‘sleeping’ districts, which is fantastic to behold after sunset. It’s all about the humongous modern-style arched gates, which turn blinding white at night, illuminating the surrounding area. You definitely won’t get lost here!

3. Zaryadye Park

tourist place for couples near me

One of the most popular places in the capital, the Zaryadye Park, just in the shadow of the Kremlin, looks especially festive in the evening. The floating bridge lights and the roof of the amphitheater can be seen from hundreds of meters away. The elegant backlight also decorates the ponds and various pathways and lawns that dot the area. Taking a walk along the backlit Moscow River embankment with the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment ‘vysotka’ (aka one of the ‘Seven Sisters’) as a backdrop - what could be more romantic?

4. Moscow-City Park

tourist place for couples near me

The capital’s business district lights up like a Christmas tree at night and is a popular place to go on evening walks. The Presnenskaya Embankment has plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can stop for a drink or a bite and if you’re at the foot of the skyscraper area, you’ll find a new public space: a multilevel amphitheater and glowing musical fountain, which works all year round.

5. Park Pobedy (Zelenograd)

tourist place for couples near me

Inhabitants of the greenest (and furthest most from Moscow’s downtown) district like to visit this park with its glowing cascading fountains, shooting bursts of water eight meters into the air. The pedestrian bridge over the water looks like a moon path.

6. The pedestrian area around the Samora Mashel street

tourist place for couples near me

There’s a pedestrian area in between a few residential blocks in south-east Moscow. There are children’s playgrounds and various colorfully-decorated footpaths. There’s also a moon swing!

7. Astronomers’ Garden in Sokolniki

tourist place for couples near me

To understand the inner workings of our solar system, one doesn’t necessarily need to go to the Planetarium. The Sokolniki Park, in Moscow’s northeast, boasts some very realistic replicas of planets, which dazzle evening visitors. All of the stars and orbits light up in different colors, forming illuminated footpaths.

And don’t skip the arch alley next to the main entrance - it’s the best selfie spot in the park!

8. Moscow’s central boulevards

tourist place for couples near me

Moscow’s ‘boulevard ring’, with its lit-up trees, carved cast iron lanterns and luminescent arches is a perfect fit for those seeking a lengthy walk around the capital’s center. The ‘ring’ comprises 19 boulevards measuring nine kilometers in length and all running through Moscow’s most scenic central areas. There are old Moscow buildings, where famous artists or writers might once have lived (which you can read about on designated plaques).

Going on an evening walking tour of Moscow’s downtown architecture is an indescribable feeling. There are markets and street fairs for every season of the year, as well. It gets especially pretty in winter, however, when the trees and pedestrian areas light up with millions of lights.

Moscow or St. Petersburg – Which Russian City Is Better?

June 4, 2017 by Bino 7 Comments

As two of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia, most travelers who visit the world’s largest countries end up making their way to both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both cities have a wealth of attractions, including palaces, churches as well as exciting culinary and nightlife scenes. But what if you find yourself able to visit only one – should you visit Moscow or St. Petersburg? Alternatively, if you have time for both, in which city do you spend more days?

During a recent trip to Russia, I had a similar problem deciding. My trip allowed me to visit both cities but I was not sure in the beginning whether I should stay for more days in Moscow or St. Petersburg. As such, the comparison I am going to do here applies both to those trying to allocate the number of days between the two cities as well as those who have enough time to visit only one,

As Russia’s capital, the city serves as the financial center of the country. The city is highly cosmopolitan. You will find a large number of people from all around Russia here and even people from the former Soviet republics. Moscow also has a noticeable expat population and you’ll find various types of eateries here from Japanese to French as well as Italian – the latter which local chefs do very well.

moscow kremlin

a view of the kremlin over the moskva river

While the city sits firmly in Europe and plenty of the surrounding architecture are certainly typical of the continent, Moscow can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming (and clogged), not to mention polluted due to the smoke coming out of the cars. There are plenty of highways circling the city to reach areas outside the central core. Moscow is definitely one of the great cities of the world.

  • Moscow is one of the world’s largest cities and you won’t get bored here. There are plenty of districts from which to explore. Personally, I love the area surrounding the Patriarshy Ponds filled with plenty of charming shops and hip restaurants.
  • If you decide to spend more time or devote your entire time in Russia to Moscow, you’ll be pleased that there are plenty of day trip and excursion opportunities from here. The towns around the golden ring, i.e. Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, etc are either a car or train ride away and can easily keep you preoccupied for a couple of days.
  • The city is not as touristy as St. Petersburg and that’s a good thing. I visited the Kolomenskoye Park for example, which houses a UNESCO World Heritage Site, without encountering the tour groups I typically see in St. Petersburg.
  • If the hipster culture interests you, you’ll be pleased that you have plenty of options in Moscow. The most prominent is Flacon , a short walk from Dmitrovskaya station.

the izmailovo kremlin – one of the places you should include in your moscow trip

  • Overall, I found Moscow to be more expensive – both in terms of hotels, food as well as transport. The Russian capital is frequently ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the world. All it takes is a visit to the iconic GUM shopping mall to see the astronomical prices.
  • If you are visiting Moscow independently, you might find getting by via public transport a bit confusing. When taking the metro in particular, the signs are all in Cyrillic so it’s helpful to learn a bit of the alphabet in order to familiarize yourself with the names of the places. If any consolation, some of the stations are among the most beautiful subway stations in the world.
  • While both Moscow and St. Petersburg have less charming Soviet style buildings, you’ll find more in Moscow – being once the capital of the Soviet Union.
  • There are no shortage of sights in Moscow but many of them are scattered all around the city. Interesting places in the outskirts include: Kolomenskoye Park, the Izmailovo Kremlin, Novodevichy Convent and Flaocon. But these are at different directions from the center.

Where I stayed in Moscow: I found the InterContinental Tverskaya Moscow to be conveniently located. It’s within a short walk from at least 3 metro stations while the Red Square is just down the road. Service overall is fantastic compared to other Moscow hotels and vacation rental options and there are good deals to be had during weekends. You can also compare the best prices for hotels in Moscow HERE .

St. Petersburg

st. petersburg in russia

Established some 300 years ago by Peter the Great, St. Petersburg probably ranks among the most visually appealing cities in Europe. Almost any building in the central core for example can be considered as a tourist attraction. The city is one of the great touristic cities in Europe – hosting plenty of daytrippers from cruises around the Baltics or Scandinavia.

  • The city is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with plenty of classical and baroque architecture. Peter the Great spared no expense in hiring the best architects from Western Europe when he established the city.
  • St. Petersburg is relatively cheaper than Moscow. Uber rides between most points within the city center don’t go beyond $5.
  • Many of the tourist attractions are concentrated within the center so it’s fairly easy to walk from one attraction to another or take a short cab ride.
  • The city derives a good part of its income in tourism and you’ll find plenty of signs in English and even in other foreign languages. While I was there, I saw many restaurants and shops displaying signs in Chinese.

  • While you will find daytrip opportunities in the form of Petrograd as well as Catherine Palace, they’re significantly less than if you choose to base yourself in Moscow.
  • St. Petersburg can get quite touristy and you could find the crowds a bit maddening and you might even need to queue for a long time to enter. It’s possible to purchase tickets for some attractions online but others are available only on the spot.

Where I stayed in St. Petersburg: I was pleasantly surprised by the Crowne Plaza Ligovsky . Some of the rooms are styled like a palace with engravings on the walls. Fresh juices were served during breakfast – something relatively unheard of for a 4 star hotel. Best of all, it is located just across Galeria, one of the biggest shopping malls in St. Petersburg. You can also check out some other hotels and compare the best prices HERE for St. Petersburg.

Where to go if you could choose only one city?

Both Moscow and St. Petersburg are great in their own ways. However, if your stay in Russia is very short and barring any other limitations, I would suggest going to St. Petersburg instead. My reasons are as follows: St. Petersburg is quicker to navigate. You can finish most of the main attractions within a couple of days by focusing on the city center and perhaps visiting the area north of the river. In contrast, Moscow is quite spread out. The city is so much more than the Kremlin and Red Square that it will take you more days to really see the city. It would be better to visit Moscow next time when you have more days to spare.

If you have enough time for both cities, where should you allocate more days?

On the other hand, if you have more time to visit both cities and are deciding where to allocate more days – I would suggest allocating more days for Moscow. Other than the extra time required to see the city outskirts, you could also use the extra days to arrange excursions to the cities in the Golden Ring. Also check out my suggested one week itinerary for Russia . Alternatively, you can also consider venturing to Russia’s third capital, the multicultural city of Kazan if you have time.

Tips for Russia

  • Know the Cyrillic alphabet  – the local alphabet is not difficult and is actually quite fun to learn especially after you learn how many words sound the same in both Russian and English! This will help greatly when you navigate metro stations and read shop signs.
  • Travel insurance – If you are going for a simple eating trip near your home country, travel insurance may not be needed but for Russia which is quite far and rather exotic, I decided to purchase one. I bought from  this provider which has a higher than average medical coverage and compensates you for things like accidents and lost items at a relatively cheap price.
  • Buy metro cards – Getting the metro cards in cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg will save you lots when it comes to transport cost and is far more convenient than buying tickets on the spot. For places that are not covered by the metro, you can consider ride-sharing apps like UBER.

I have been to moscow and lived there for a while i only find out that in moscow people are so aggressive and not friendly at all. If you don’t kniw the Russian language then it means you would be in problems. People don’t like to help others. if you can’t find any address don’t ask any one they will not answer you.time is money for them they don’t waist time for you.

Thank you for all the helpful information. There are a lot of blogs comparing the two cities, but your info is really concise and practical.

I will plan to visit both but spend a bit more time in Moscow (if I can afford the hotels!!).

What time of year were you in Russia? I would like to go during the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg.
