SANDUR WAS a beautiful place about 20 years ago and its beauty destroyed by all illegal mining goons like Lads, Reddys and other mining companies, even though NMDC is there for so long but they never bothered to develop Sandur other than their township, and roads are in very very bad dilipilated/unmotorable conditions, but little improvement did by JSW at the cost of spending out of their illgotten wealth by illegal mining and destroying beautiful forest. Even Narihalla was very good and its water was so sweet again totally polluted by lad's illegal resort built by encroching forest land. Now becos of Supreme Court dare devil act of stopping illegal mining, now Sandur again shaping back to original beauty. I love Sandur so much.

  • Top 10 places to visit in Sandoy region, Faroe Islands

Sandur is known for having the only sand dunes in the Faroes, for thw wonderful beach, the yarn-bombed rock near lake Gróthúsvatn, the serene walk to beautiful Søltuvík, the interesting Art Gallery Listasavnið , with art from e.g. Mikines and Kamban, the village museum from 1812, kayaking on the third biggest lake in the Faroes, lake Sandsvatn, saying hello to muuh , the agricultural project Veltan , saga tours and much more!

The village

Approx. 520 people live in Sandur.

The oldest proof of settlement in the Faroe Islands were found in the area á Sondum in 2007. The excavation found that people had lived here in th 4th-6th century. You can read more about archaeology in Sandur here .

The church in Sandur was inagurated in 1839. This is the 6th church in Sandur, and both the story about the church as well as the surrounding area are very interesting. Many excavations have been conducted in the area, and they have found e.g. remains of buildings, articles for everyday use and ornaments. In 1863 the sexton found a coin treasure in the old graveyard, the only one of its kind in the Faroes. The treasure was 98 silvercoins from the 11th century. The treasure can be seen at the National Museum.

The village museum in Sandur

In Norðara Koyta you’ll find the village museum , a house from the year 1812. In 1988 the association Sands Bygdasavn bought the house. The house has been renovated and items from the time have been gathered, so you can see how people lived in the first half of the 19th century.

Say hello to muuh

In Sandur you can visit Poul and his cattle . Children love to visit Poul and his wife Sóleyð because the cows are adorable and friendly, and Poul is a great storyteller. You can also dine at their place for heimablídni.

Kayaking on lake Sandsvatn

Lake Sandsvatn is the third-biggest lake in the Faroe Islands, and it is perfect for both fishing and kayaking.

There are 20 kayaks for rent , and the price is DKK 200,- for 3 hours. You’ll find the kayaks as soon as you reach Sandur.

The Art Gallery in Sandur

The art gallery  is a gift from Sofus Olsen with some of the best Faroese art from e.g. Janus Kamban, S.J. Mikines, Ingálvur av Reyni, Jack Kampmann and Frimod Joensen. The architect behind the gallery is  J. P. Gregoriussen.

The youth association Virkið

The youth association  hosts many of the association activities in Sandur. Virkið is a big communal house and is perfect for events, parties, dances, theatre, meetings, camp schools, just to name a few.

Veltan is an interesting new agricultural project. Veltan grows Faroese greens that you can buy in Sandur as well as in other parts of the Faroes when they travel around almost every week. Some of the best restaurants in the Faroes buy greens from Veltan because the quality and taste are exceptional.

You can book a visit at Veltan and learn more about the project by contacting VisitSandoy.

Saga and adventure tour

The saga tour  is a family friendly tour that starts in Sandur.

Your guide will tell you all about the famous witch, and you will follow in her steps and visit the cave where she lived. The tour takes approx. 2 hours and is suitable for children of all ages. You will walk for a bit while you hear some of the saga.

Travel to Sandur, an oasis in Ballari

The first time I heard about Sandur was while trekking with YHAI friends. Few of them had gone trekking in Sandur in Ballari district. I felt it strange to trek in an area known for its hot weather and mining. Illegal mining in the 2000s had given a bad name to the district. While few minted gold from iron ore, everyone else got dust!! But I realized that Sandur, rich in hills and forests, was an oasis in Ballari!!

Narihalla dam and backwaters

Our visit to Sandur started from Kamalapur near Hampi. We crossed Hospet, and the scenery turned beautiful. The hilly terrain started after crossing Hosapete, and we could see greenery everywhere. Sandur town looked like any other place in India. We went to the first place of our visit, Krauncha Giri.

Krauncha Giri

Krauncha Giri is about 10 km from Sandur and is famous for two old temples. The more famous Kumaraswamy temple was built in the 8th-10th century, while the adjoining Parvathi temple was constructed in the 7th-8th century.

Temples at Krauncha Giri

The drive to the temples was the scariest for me as a driver. The road was good, but speed breakers were omnipresent. With four people and luggage in the car, I had to be careful while moving over the speed breakers. Still, I could not stop the underbody from hitting the road bumps a few times. Once, it made a loud noise as I passed through a monstrous road hump attracting attention from the roadside people. I expected the car to stop or make a weird noise. Nothing happened, and no warning lights came up on the dashboard. I continued driving but told my family that they should get down at that speed breaker while coming back!!

Kumaraswamy temple

In addition to speed breakers, I had to manage the mining trucks on the road. The presence of iron ores in the forest meant lorries on the road. They came with dust!! It would be a painful drive for two-wheelers. In our case, the car took a complete mud bath!! There was forest everywhere, and so were the mines.

A sculpture in the temple

The last few km was the climb to the hill with series of hair pin bends. Few people had warned about the challenges in pulling up the car. But I did not face any issue. It was a normal ghat climb.

Parvathi and Kumaraswamy temples

Finally, we reached the peaceful temple area, notwithstanding the chaos of mining in its surroundings. The temples looked spectacular. The architecture of the Parvathi temple was different. It seemed to be a mix of many architectural styles. Surprisingly, the temples remained intact for so long.

View point at Narihalla river

We drove to Sandur-Kudligi road to see the viewpoint. Situated on the outskirts of Sandur, it provided a nice view of the Narihalla river and the valley. The entire area was green, and the forests looked like western ghat ranges.

Narihalla view point

Chaya and Tanu pointed out the graffiti on the rocks. I was all “X loves Y” kind of writings. We were surprised how one could climb to such places and then paint such things. “Their love is so strong” was one view. Taj Mahal looked pale in front of their expressions. For me, they were a bunch of losers who were a pure pain to society.

Narihalla dam

We then proceeded towards Ballari. The drive was along Narihalla dam backwaters. My family exclaimed that it looked like the “Milford Sound” of New Zealand . Wow!! It was a strong comparison. While I felt that it was an exaggeration to compare against a place known as a natural wonder, it was still beautiful and could be called “Local Milford Sound”.

Narihalla reservoir surrounded by hills

The photos do not give justice to the place. Due to the position of the sun, it was hard to take good snaps. I think evening is the best time to visit this place.

Where to stay?

I did not see any good hotels in Sandur. The Sandur Palace converted to a hotel offers a great stay, if you can afford it or if someone is sponsoring you!! Else, you can go on a day trip from Hosapete/Hampi or Ballari.

We also could not find a good vegetarian restaurant. Nearby Toranagallu has better options to eat.

Narihalla dam

What else to see?

  • Sandur fort in the town is a land fort, but it is now part of the living population.
  • Jindal Vijaynagar city is a planned township that has excellent roads, parks, grounds and infrastructure. Kaladham in the township is interesting.
  • Hills around Sandur are good spots for trekking.

Backwaters of Narihalla dam

Tips and information

  • The best time to visit Sandur is during the monsoon months when the place looks green.
  • Beware of speed breakers. They are present on every road in and around Sandur. By the time you accelerate and reach a cruising speed, you need to apply brakes!!
  • Mining trucks ply on the road. Be very careful as the drivers drive like maniacs. I felt that there were in the wrong jobs. They would have easily won any race events in the world and brought their name to our country.
  • Avoid Sandur “Bypass” like the plague. With hundreds of parked and moving trucks on that you, you may get stuck for hours. Google maps do not provide traffic information for this road but divert gullible car drivers to this stretch.

25 Unforgettable Places to Visit in Hampi

There are so many places to visit in Hampi that you could spend months here exploring them all. However, since most of us don’t have that much time on our hands, here’s bringing you the best places to see and things to do in Hampi that you can easily shortlist for a 3-4 days trip. In that duration, you’ll probably be able to see most of these sites at a fast pace. If you want to take it slower, just choose the ones you like the most based on the images of Hampi’s attractions and their history.

If you’re planning a trip to Hampi, you might also like to check out our detailed Hampi travel guide that not only has a solid itinerary covering the majority of the below mentioned Hampi tourist places but also tells you about how to get there, when to visit, where to stay and other tips.

Can’t travel there? Well, then just enjoy these photos of Hampi. Travelling virtually is all the rage in these times anyway.

The Best Temples in Hampi

There are a plethora of temples in Hampi of which 11 are mentioned overall in this blog post in different sections. In this particular section we are covering the major or unique temple complexes.

Vitthala Temple

Vitthala Temple is the grandest temple in Hampi and a must add to your list even if you’re visiting for just a day. Built in the 15th century, it is dedicated to Vittala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple exemplifies the creativity and architectural excellence of the artisans and sculptors of the Vijayanagara empire. The highlights of this temple are The Stone Chariot (details below) and the musical pillars that when tapped produce musical notes. It’s a marvel that these single blocks of stone can emit perfect notes!

Pro-Tip: Visit the temple first thing in the morning (8:30 AM) to avoid the crowd. Also, hire a guide.

Photos of Vitthala Temple or Vittala Temple Hampi- Frangipani Tree, Gopuram, Pushkarni, Marketplace - This is one of the best places to visit in Hampi

The Stone Chariot of Hampi

The stone chariot of Hampi is very popular not only because of its visual charm but also because it is featured on the INR 50 currency note. Swipe the Instagram post below to see what we are talking about.

That said, there is much to know about this iconic structure and slightly deceptive chariot.

  • It is not a chariot but actually a shrine in the shape of one. The shrine is dedicated to Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu to whose incarnation the temple is dedicated.
  • The chariot shrine might look like a carved monolith but it is actually built of large blocks of granite. The joints are smartly hidden in the carvings.
  • It is inspired by the chariot shaped Konark Sun Temple in Orissa – a magnificent structure that the king of the empire was greatly impressed by. And so was I!

Fun Fact: There is a third famous chariot located in Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu!

Hazara Rama Temple

Constructed in the 15th century, the Hazara Rama temple is the only temple located in the royal centre of Hampi. The temple, as the name suggests, is dedicated to Rama – an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The walls of this small temple have carved on them the story of the Hindu epic Ramayana in a comic strip form. These relics are among the most extensive ones to be found anywhere in India. Another highlight of the temple are the black marble pillars that are unlike any others in Hampi.

Collection of photos of Hampi Hazara Rama Temple - Twirling in front of the temple, Ramayana Carvings, and Black Marble Pillar

Virupaksha Temple

Located in the main Hampi area, Virupaksha temple is the most popular temple in Hampi. Why so? Well firstly, it is the only working temple in Hampi. Secondly, it is a 7th-century temple so it is the oldest known temple in Hampi. And lastly, it is also home to a cute elephant called Lakshmi that gives blessings (pictured below).

The main things to see in the temple are the 11 storeyed golden gopuram, the inner courtyard, vegetable paint paintings on the roof of the main temple, a hole in a chamber that works like a pinhole camera casting the shadow of the gopuram on a wall, the serene well (or kund), and also monkeys and squirrels.

Pro-Tip : To see Lakshmi being bathed you can visit the Tungabhadra river at 8 AM. Also, Lakshmi is taken away from the temple at about 5:30 AM-6:00 AM so ensure you meet her before that.

Virupaksha Temple Hampi - Lakshmi the Elephant, Kund, Vegetable Paint Ceiling Paintings, Monkey, and Ornate Pillars - This is one of the most popular places to visit in hampi

Achyutaraya Temple

Located next to Matanga hill, Achyutaraya Temple is in a somewhat hidden location and hence seldom visited. Most temples in Hampi you see today were built in the 15th century. Since this was constructed by a high officer in King Achyuta Raya’s court in the 16th century, it is one of the last temples constructed before the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The temple is dedicated to Tiruvengalanatha – an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The pillars, towers and walls have exquisite carvings. Despite major parts of the temple being in ruins, it does not fail in grandiosity.

Pro Tip : Visit this temple around midday as leopards have been spotted here in the evening even at 5 PM.

One of the famous temples of Hampi, Achyutaraya Temple's view from Matanga Hill

Underground Shiva Temple

The Prasanna Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his avatar as Virupaksha, is located underground. It is one of the older temples in Hampi having been built in the 14th century but interestingly it was discovered only in the 1980s. Because of its location close to the nobleman’s quarters, it is believed that the temple was used for private ceremonies by the royals. After visiting so many temples with exquisite carvings, it is almost refreshing to visit one that is so simple and yet so unique. The area surrounding the temple has a beautiful lawn you can relax on or picnic.

Pro-Tip: Since the temple is underground, it is often submerged in water. The temple, therefore, cannot be visited in the monsoon months from June to September. In other months, you may still find a bit of water in the temple.

Another famous temple in Hampi is the Krishna Temple. You can include it in your itinerary if you have time. We will be covering notable statue temples and others below so read on!

Amazing Royal Monuments in Hampi

These monuments in Hampi are located in the Royal Centre that houses the palaces, durbars, tanks, residences, and baths used by the royals of the empire.

Lotus Mahal

The Lotus Mahal (also known as Kamal Mahal or Chitragani Mahal) is located inside a walled space called the Zenana Enclosure which was used by the women of the royal family. There is nothing to be seen of other buildings in the enclosure as they are heavily damaged. However, the Lotus Mahal is an absolute charmer with its unique lotus bud domes. It is built in Indo Islamic style – the arches of the palace are build in Islamic style and the multi-layered roof design is Indo style.

It is worth noting that all the structures built in Indo-Muslim or Muslim style are in better condition than those that were built in pure Hindu style. This is because when the combined armies of the Muslim rulers of the Deccan attacked Hampi, they only damaged Hindu style structures. So most temples were burnt but such royal structures left intact. However, the structures have anyway deteriorated due to improper maintenance and the wrath of time.

Zenana Enclosure and Lotus Mahal Hampi

Elephant Stables

These stables located right behind Zenana Enclosure (route pictured above on the right) is a beautiful one built in Indo-Islamic style! It used to house the elephants of the royals back in the day. The structure tells us two things. Firstly, a lot of importance was given to elephants in the Vijaynagara Empire; such a beautiful structure was built to shelter them. Secondly, the building shows the secularism of the Empire since the domes of the stable are built in Hindu, Islamic and Jain styles.

We personally enjoyed our visit here immensely. It is great for photography and also for chilling by the shade of the tree and inside the stables.

Elephant Stables Hampi

Stepped Tank

There are many tanks, kunds or pushkarnis in Hampi. These were built mainly near temples for ritual cleansing before prayers, cleansing of idols and/or to store water during dry months.

This tank located in the royal enclosure is totally different from other tanks of Hampi as it is constructed using finely finished blocks of black schist stones. Built for the royals for religious purposes, it is about 22 square meters in size and 7 meters deep with 5 tiers. The symmetry, colour and design of the structure are simply mesmerizing.

Stepped Tank located in the Royal Enclosure at Hampi - One the most incredible places to visit in Hampi

Mahanavami Dibba

Also known as The Great Platform, it is a 3-tiered 8-meter high platform used by the king to watch Dussehra/Maha Navami celebrations. The bottom tier of the platform has interesting war carvings etched on its surface. Since the Dibba is the only structure that stands as is in the Royal Enclosure, you can see a vast expanse of empty land in front of it.

Mahanavami Dibba in the Royal Enclosure Hampi

Queen’s Bath

The Queen’s Bath, as the name suggests, was a bath for the queen and other royal women. However, due to its location away from buildings in royal enclosure, it is also often believed to have been a pleasure palace. This 14th-century building doesn’t look like much from the outside as the building is flat and architecture simple. But on the inside, it is super picturesque. The interior is surrounded by consecutive archways and ornate balconies with a sunken 1.8 meters deep empty bath in the centre. You will often find an owl or owlets in the bath – a visual cherry on the cake!

Hampi has grand monolithic statue temples that are simply mind-blowing. Imagine people of that time, moving such large blocks of stone and sculpting it.

Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

This temple is dedicated to Narasimha, a lion-faced avatar of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi as well who was his consort. It is the largest monolith statue in Hampi at 6.7 metres– an imposing sight! And definitely our favourite monolith in Hampi!

Kadalekalu Ganesh

Located on Hemakuta Hills, the Kadalekalu Ganesha is a 4.6-meter statue, the belly of which resembles a Bengal gram (Kadalekalu in local language). The statue is in a sanctum inside a beautiful stone structured temple decorated with tall and ornate granite pillars in the front. This Ganesha statue was built for and frequented by the royal family.

The temple is located on high ground so you can get an amazing view of the Hampi Bazaar and the foothills of Matanga Hill. The entire setting is very serene and you may even find a cool breeze flowing through the temple.

Monolithic Bull

Also known as Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi, this monolithic bull is located at one end of the Virupaksha Bazaar. This statue of the mount of Lord Shiva symbolically faces the Virupaksha Temple also dedicated to Shiva. Though the statue is carved in a coarse style and is also partially mutilated, this Nandi attracts tourists owing to its giant size (also because it’s in the vicinity of other attractions). The surroundings of the bull statue are quite pleasing to the eye. See for yourself in the pictures below.

Pro-Tip: No need to make a seperate visit to this statue. Visit is on the way to Achutaraya Temple or the Tungabhadra River (coracle ride).

Sasivekalu Ganesha

Sasivekalu Ganesha is a 2.4-metre high statue of Ganesha that was built for the common people of the kingdom. The statue of Ganesha depicts a snake tied around the waist. Per Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha once ate a lot of food and had to tie a snake around his stomach to prevent it from bursting. The statue is also called Mustard Ganesha as the Ganesha’s belly is shaped like a mustard seed. Unlike the Kadalekalu Ganesha, this statue is placed in an open pavilion.

Badavilinga Temple

Located a few steps away from the Narasimha Statue is this giant shrine for Shiva. At 3 metres, it is the largest Linga in Hampi and is made of impressive black stone. The Linga sanctum is always filled with water as a water canal flows through it. It is believed that the statue was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name (The word Badva means poor in the local language).

Pro Tip: No need to plan a visit this statue on a seperate visit since it is located beside the Narasimha statue!

Places to Visit in Hampi for Sunrise and Sunset

Sunrises and sunsets in Hampi are spectacular due to the incredible surrounding landscape. Sure sunrises are more effort, but they’re so worth it in Hampi. Do not miss seeing at least one!

Hemakuta Hills

The Hemakuta hill temple complex is our favourite place to visit in Hampi. Why? You could just loiter here without any aim but still immensely enjoy the ruins, the huge boulders, the views from this vantage point, and not to mention the incredible sunset. Located beside the Virupaksha temple, these hills are easy to access and walk around. The most famous temples to visit here (besides the two Ganesha statues mentioned above) are the Hanuman Temple and the Moola Virupaksha temple which are within walking distance from the Virupaksha Temple. To watch the sunset, sit on either the benches at sunset point or anywhere else you like. We watched it while sitting on the stone railings of a temple! The sunset was breath-taking.

Pro Tip: The sun sets much above the horizon in Hampi because of the haze in the area. Do settle down much before sunset time to not be surprised when you find no sun in the sky!

Hemakuta Hills Hampi Sunset Point - Views of Hanuman Temple, Virupaksha Temple, Frangipani Tree

Matanga Hill

Climb the highest point of Hampi, Matanga Hill, for 360-degree surreal sunrise views. You’ll see multiple hues in the sky, boulder scattered terrain, Hemakuta Hills with all its temples, Virupaksha Temple, Achutaraya Temple, paddy fields till the eyes can see, and mountains in the distance. You might also be shown a cave on your way up – it is believed that Sugriva, ruler of Kishkinda, used to hide here. Yes, the hill is referenced in the Ramayana. There is also a small temple at the top which is dedicated to Veerbhadra – a form of Lord Shiva. The hike is a 40-minute steep one but awesome enough to not be missed. An alternate and easier route is taken to come down which takes you through short steps.

Pro-Tip: Firstly, hire a guide since the path is not defined, steep, and exposed in some areas. Secondly, don’t do this hike at sunset as bears have been spotted at the easy route after dark. You do not want to take the tougher route to come down as you’re more likely to injure yourself.

Matanga Hill Hampi at Sunrise - Temple, Paddy Views, Hemakuta Hill View and the climb

Tungabhadra River

Hampi is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. You can sit on the stones at the bank during sunset. You might not get a clear view of the sun but the evening time here has such a special vibe. But before that, go for a coracle ride in the river. This isn’t your typical boring boat ride, no! It is a ride on a round boat through the canyon of sorts. You’ll have stacked boulders hills on both sides that are dotted with temples (some are even half-submerged). It is an unforgettable sight! Definitely one of the best things to do in Hampi.

Pro-Tip: You may not be able to visit here and do the coracle ride in the monsoon months from June- September as the water levels rise greatly and the current is strong. To do a coracle ride in the monsoons, try Sanapur Lake. Also, it is better to do the coracle ride in the evening as this area is shaded from the sun at the time.

Coracle ride in the Tungabhadra River is one the best things to do in Hampi. Here are some pictures of submerged Temples, boulders, and the coracle

Kamalapur Lake

This was a chance find on a drive from Hampi to our hotel in Kamalapur. Most people including local guides don’t mention it. I don’t know why not – maybe it’s because of a bit of plastic waste you see discarded on the banks.

However, the sunset here is worth an evening. There are benches too for you to sit on and gaze at the sun in comfort and peace. We opened a packet of snacks and some beverages while watching the sun dip into the horizon. It was perfect!

Sunset at Kamalapur Lake in Hampi from public benches

Anjaneya Hill

Anjaneya hill is a bouldered one located on the other side of the Tungabhadra river at Hanumanahalli. This 1-2 hour climb is a pilgrimage for most as this hill is the place where Lord Hanuman was born. As a result, the path is very well defined and shaded to make it easier for devotees to offer their prayers at the hilltop Hanuman temple. Check the sunset time on google and start your hike up well in time to be able to explore the temple and see a spectacular sunset from the top!

Places to Visit Near Hampi

Sandur is a small mining town located about 40 kilometres from Hampi. It has a beautiful landscape characterized by rugged blue-black mountains and narrow lanes through lush fields (also gorgeous sunflower fields). The WelcomHertitage Shivavilas Palace Hotel located here used to be the residence of the King of Sandur. Now it is a 5-star hotel that is a museum in itself the common rooms have been left as-is from the time that the royal family lived here. The library, billiards rooms, vintage cars and living rooms – all take you back in time. This is definitely one of the best places to visit near Hampi.

Paddy Fields on the other side of the Tungabhadra River

When you’re in Hampi, people will refer to the area on the opposite bank of the Tungabhadra river as exactly that – the other side. This area covers villages like Hanumanahalli, Hippie Island (now bulldozed), Anegundi (where apparently most of Hippie Island has relocated after the bulldozing), and Sanapur. The drive around this area has the most picturesque paddy fields. Take a stroll around them or hire a bike (may be available during season time between October-February) and explore the area.

Temples and Sites Beyond the River

These are temples and attractions on the other side of the Tungabhadra river. This area was known as Kishkinda – the mythical kingdom of monkey kings Bali and Sugriva, mentioned in the epic Ramayana. Hence, most of these sites have religious importance!

  • Anjaneya Hill: Birthplace of Hanuman. Mentioned above.
  • Chinthamani Temple in Anegundi: Chintamani Temple is a Shiva Temple. It is the spot from where Ram aimed and shot his arrow to kill Baali during his fight with Sugriva. The temple is worth a visit by all due to its epic location beside the Tungabhadra.
  • Pampa Sarovar Temple: The temple is constructed where Pampa (a form of Parvati) punishes herself to show her dedication to Shiva. Also, Pampa Sarovar is a sacred lake for Hindus – one of the 5 sacred lakes (Panch Sarovar) in Hindu mythology. If you’re not into mythology, consider visiting only from November to December when lotuses are in full bloom at Pampa Sarovar Lake.
  • Anegundi Fort: The Anegundi fort with its many gates, tombs and temples (Ganesha Cave Temple and Durga Temple) is a sprawling fort that once used to guard the region.
  • Gagan Mahal: Gagan Mahal, once the abode of rulers in the Vijayanagar Empire, is now a local administrative building that is not properly maintained. You can still check it out from the outside if you’re in the area.

Pro-Tip: Eat lunch at Baba Cafe. This café is reminiscent of the Hippie Island days as it has a similar vibe. Due to its awesome location in nature, the cafe makes for a great place to have some beer and international fare.

Tungabhadra Dam

The Tungabhadra Dam, 18 km from Hampi, is a nice short stopover on your route to or back from Hampi. The sheer volume of water it handles is a sight to see.

The dam has a well-maintained Japanese garden located beside it which is great for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. You might also like to visit when the dam’s gates are lit in rainbow colours in the evening between 7:15 to 8:30 PM.

Tungabhadra Dam - Places Near Hampi

Sanapur Lake

Sanapur Lake located beyond Anegundi on the ‘other side of the river’, is an irrigation reservoir. It is less frequented due to its distance from Hampi and as per us, the lack of much to do here. It used to be THE spot for cliff climbing but as per locals, this has been banned as people have died after jumping in the lake. If you’re interested in cliff jumping, ask the locals if you actually can do that when you get there. Besides that, you can enjoy a coracle ride here (for much less money than at the Tungabhadra river) but overall the ride pales in comparison to the Tungabhadra one – no cliffs, no ancient temples, nothing. The best reason to visit here is the peace, since you’ll hardly find tourists in the area.

Sanapur Lake Hampi

Points to Note

Opening and Closing Time : Most attractions open at 8:30 AM-9 AM. We suggest starting your day at the opening time to make the most of it. You can always return to your hotel in the afternoon from 1 PM-4 PM to rest as it gets too hot to explore. Also, it is better to exit most of Hampi’s attractions at or before sunset, to be safe from wild animals like bears and leopards.

Entrance Fees : Only a few attractions have entrance fees – Virupaksha temple with a cost of Rs.25 and Vitthala Temple at Rs. 40. The prices mentioned are for Indian nationals, BIMSTEC and SAARC country nationals. For other foreign nationals, it is Rs. 500 at Virupaksha and Rs. 600 at Vitthala. These prices change often, however. You may be charged extra for DSLRs, though we weren’t. Tripods, video cameras and drones are not allowed inside the attractions.

Guide Cost : The cost for a guide at specific sites are usually Rs. 200-300. This may vary by guide and site. You will definitely need a guide for Vitthala Temple, Virupaksha Temple and to climb Hemakuta Hills. For other sites, use your discretion. If you’d like to have a guide with you all day then the cost is Rs. 1500- Rs. 2000 per day. It is a good investment to really understand the architecture and history of the locations and also make the most of your time. However, they do rush the monument visits.

Sandur looks gorgeous. I love the landscape and orangey red tones to the earth- very beautiful.

D of Love C and D

Sandur looks and sounds like a beautiful place to visit. I have to admit to never having heard of any of the places mentioned but, you have certainly woven a web of words making it sound enticing. The first picture of the Narihalla water pass is stunning, so much natural beauty. The various temples sound interesting and the architecture of the Kumaraswamy temple is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Aw what a beautiful place! Very peaceful and serene. It’s a beautiful getaway from the usual city break travels. Is it safe to hike in the mountains?

bornomadic

Pardon my ignorance, but it is the first time I am reading any about Sandur, often people talk about their trips to Hampi. I personally believe that Sandur would be a great place due to it’s less popularity. I have added it to my travel list. Thanks for sharing

Tania Mukherjee

I’d heard of Hampi before but never Sandur! It’s a shame because I spent four months in Kerala last year with frequent trips across to the nearby states. Had I read about Sandur I would have been sure to make the effort to head over – it looks amazing!

I haven’t been to India yet. It looks like Sandur is the best place to explore in India. I like the photos that you have featured here. They have great sceneries. Have you done hiking here?

Only By Land

I visited Hampi but didn’t know Sandur was so close. I regret not visiting Sandur now it photographs so beautifully, especially the pass with the strong greens and browns. I’d love to photograph the mines, the dam and the temple too!

That first photo though… I couldn’t get over it. It’s such a beautiful natural scenery. I haven’t heard of this place before but I am super excited to know that there is much to explore! Being a nature lover that I am, I need to add this to my bucket list.

AviTheNomad

Oh boy, it’s been my holidays place since my childhood. Eventhough I was visiting in the scorching summer holidays it’s been a charismatic and peaceful place for me always. The last I visited in October, it was heaven on earth! White steamy clouds passing through the hearts of the mountains! I’m lucky to have my aunt in Sandur who take care of me like a Prince and having farm at the foothills of gargantuan mountains. Love the way Sandur getting praise!

Captain Flint

September would be the best time to take in the lush green landscape of Sandur. In addition to the places listed on this blog, the Gandi Narasimha Temple, The Harishankara temple, The Naviluswamy temple all offer some thrills for the seekers – with some fantastic views or short easy hikes. If you are lucky, you might get to do a bit of boating on the Narihalla ( subject to boat/boatman’s availability – it’s more a coracle ride than a boatride )

Sandur – See Sandur in September

tourist places near sandur

Situated between dense forests and a mountain range that makes the presence of a bustling city almost inconspicuous, Sandur had natural defenses. The Ghorpades ruled over the princely state of Sandur from early 18th century when their provincial title was first established by the Marathas / Peshwas whom the Ghorpades served with utmost loyalty and courage till the state of Sandur was acceded into the Dominion of India upon independence.

At first, Sandur along with entire Bellary division was made part of Madras Presidency and later in the year 1956, through States Reorganization Act, restructured the states in India on linguistic basis and made both Bellary and Sandur part of Karnataka State.

Tourist Attractions of Sandur

The city later developed into a prominent mining town with rich reserves of Iron and Manganese Ore identified. Today, Sandur may not be as glorious as it once was but when it comes to tourism, Sandur does not draw as many tourists as its neighboring  Hampi – The capital of Vijayanagara Empire  but with its natural beauty, its unique temples of religious significance and its rich biodiversity, Sandur could be given a visit.

The View Point

Sandur, because of its geographical location is blessed with rich biodiversity. It is home to a wide variety of rare medicinal plants and trees. Its dense jungles are also home to many wild animals. Mahatma Gandhi who visited Sandur in the monsoon season of year 1930 had praised the beauty of the place and said “ See Sandur in September “. The hills surrounding Sandur are their greenest following the monsoon months of June, July and August. There could still be some late monsoon showers happening in the month of September but that didn’t deter Mahatma Gandhi, nor should it deter you.

A viewing point, a watch tower of sort has been erected at a point that gives the best view of the Swamymalai block mountain range. It is named “ See Sandur in September ” honoring the quote from Gandhiji. A small climb on the flight of about ~80 steps will give you an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the Swamymalai mountain range including the mysterious green house that looks like in the middle of nowhere in a dense forest.

The viewing point does not have any tourist amenities or refreshments so carry your own water bottles and snacks. Even though the sunrises and sunsets happen around 6Am/6PM, the viewing point is in a valley and produces spectacular shadows until 10AM in the morning or from 4PM in the evening.

Gandi Narasimha Temple

Gandi Narasimha Temple is situated a few kilometers from the View Point enroute Sandur town. You need to take a detour and go about 2km to reach the temple. The Temple is situated on a hillock besides a flowing stream of water called Narihalla – a small rivulet and a tributary of might Tungabhadra River. The vehicles need to be parked at the base of the hillock and a flight of about 40 steps need to be climbed to reach the temple.

tourist places near sandur

The temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha – the half-man and half-lion avatar of Lord Vishnu. The inner sanctum of the temple consists of a Narasimha Saligrama Shila. The temple puja is usually performed in the mornings, but the temple may remain open for darshan throughout the day and extended hours on festivals and special occasions.

As you step outside the inner sanctum, there are steps to take you around the sanctum and perform pradakshina or clockwise circumambulation. These steps take you behind the temple gopura at a height and gives a mesmerizing view of the surroundings.

There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman at the feet of the hill where the flight of stairs start. The guard may make you park your vehicle a few meters before the gate and leave your footwear before getting on to the steps.

Parvathi & Kumaraswamy Temples, Kraunjagiri

The two temples dedicated to Parvathi and her son Kumaraswamy are situated atop the Kraunjagiri mountain in the Swamymalai range. These two temples are rare and of significance for both religious and cultural reasons. The two shrines are situated in the same compound. Historians believe Goddess Parvathi’s temple may be the older among the two, belonging to the Badami Chalukyan era, circa 8th century while the temple dedicated to Kumaraswamy is believed to be built during the Rashtrakuta reign around 10th century.

Unlike other temples dedicated to Goddess Parvathi where the Goddess is depicted seated, the main deity in this temple is found standing tall on a pedestal. The statue is beautifully carved and further decorated with ornaments and pooja flowers rendering the statue awe inspiring.

Kumaraswamy is also known as Karthikeya, Skanda, Murugan and Subrahmanya all over India. His shrine differs from Parvathi temple and follow different school of architecture. Historians believe this to be the earliest known Karthikeya Temple in South India though there are no records to back the claim.

Until 1996, women devotees were not allowed inside this Kumaraswamy Temple owing to local lore. The Ghorpade rulers of Sandur opened the temple door to women devotees in 1996 to eliminate the discrimination. Yet, many women devotees prefer to offer their prayers only at Parvathi temple and skip entering Kumaraswamy Temple out of reverence.

Other temples in the complex include a Shiva Temple at a corner near the entrance gopura – few feet below the ground level, and a shrine dedicated to Goddess Annapurna – behind Parvathi temple along the compound wall.

How to reach the temple

The temple is situated in dense forest and was discovered during the reign of Ghorpades in Sandur several hundred years ago. The Temple Trust under the patronage of the royal family has been maintaining the temples. The temple is about 10km from Sandur town and much of this 10km ride is through reddish brown roads. Most part of the route, you will find one lane occupied by tall trucks waiting for mined ore to be laden. You might also encounter few laden trucks coming from front. The route may not be suitable for low ground clearance small cars like Nano and Alto as they may face challenges with speed bumps. The climb itself may be manageable for small cars.

The temple is open in the mornings, closed for a brief period in the noon and open again after 2PM. The view of the valley and green nature is pleasant too.

Very little is known about this temple. Might there have been a thriving town or settlement in the vicinity of the temple in the past that has been lost to time? Else, why would the kings of 8th and 10th centuries build such a grand and beautiful temple in the middle of a dense forest range atop a high mountain? Worth exploring!

Shiva Vilas Palace Heritage Hotel

Contrary to popular belief that Shivavilas was a royal residence for centuries, the palace was built only in the year 1940 – 7 years before India’s independence, during the reign of ruler Yeshwanthrao Ghorpade. It is spread across 22 acres and is built in Anglo-Saxon style.

The property is not used for royal residence anymore, it has been converted into a Heritage Hotel and is managed by WelcomHeritage Hotels. Reservations can be made to stay at this luxurious heritage hotel on their website. The property also houses restaurants, a swimming pool and several other amenities.

Ballari is situated on the eastern side of Karnataka and is surrounded by Raichur and Koppal on the north, Haveri and Gadag on the west, Chitradurga and Davanagere on the south, and Anantapur and Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) on the east. Ballari has been a meeting place for people from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh hence offering a tradition and culture mix of both the states.

Ballari has a very diverse and rich past. Mythologically, Ballari was closely associated with the epic Ramayana with the mythical kingdom of Kishkinda, the famed monkey kingdom which was inhabited by Vanaras (monkeys). Anjaneya Hill, located across the river Tungabhadra, is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. There are many more incidents of Ramayana associated with this place. Another legend associated with is Goddess Pampadevi, who is believed to have done penance on the bank of the River Pampa (Tungabhadra) and as the result of which she was able to marry Lord Shiva, who was also called Virupaksha to whom the celebrated ancient temple in Hampi is dedicated. The marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Pampadevi is still recreated annually here. In terms of archaeology, Ballari is one of those regions where the existence of man has been found with excavations here dating to the Neolithic period in places like Ballari, Sanganakallu-Kupgal, etc. But perhaps, the most important chapter in Ballari’s history has been the Vijayanagara Empire with the UNESCO World Heritage site Hampi. Vijayanagara Empire at its peak was very prosperous and was believed to be larger than Rome with palaces grander than Lisbon. There were opulent palaces, marvelous temples, massive fortifications, baths, markets, aqua-ducts, pavilions, stables for royal elephants, and elegantly carved pillars. This was a city whose merchants traded in diamonds, pearls, horses, fine silks, and brocades. Today, Ballari is popular for cotton, one of their major crops, and the city is known to have a thriving cotton industry. This district is endowed with rich mineral resources especially iron ore and hence is aptly called “The Iron City”.

When to go: The monsoon (July-September) and winter (November-February). Catch the 3-day Hampi Fest in November. In Jan-Feb check out the legendary Virupaksha Temple Car Festival and the annual Purandaradasa Aradhana Music Festival at Vithala. Temple

Heritage Sites

  • Bellary Fort: Situated in the historic city of Ballari, the Ballari Fort is built on top of Ballari Gudda or Fort Hill. The fort is believed to have been built during Vijayanagara times by the Palegar chief Hanumappa Nayaka. Hyder Ali took possession of the fort from the Nayakas in 1769 and got it renovated and modified with the help of a French engineer. Legend has it that the engineer was hanged, for overlooking the fact that the neighbouring Kumbara Gudda was taller than Ballari Gudda, thus compromising the secrecy and command of the fort. His grave is believed to be located near the East Gate of the fort, though some locals believe it to be the grave of a Muslim holy man. Visit the illuminated fort in the evenings and watch the past come alive.
  • Sanganakallu : The Sanganakallu-Kupgal area is an ancient archaeological site and the excavations here have been dated to the Neolithic period, between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago. The Sanganakallu-Kupgal area is the location of one of the oldest village settlements discovered in Asia. The excavations are cantered around four hills that have shown evidence of inhabitation during the Neolithic period. Archaeologists have discovered that the area was a large center for the production of stone tools and implements as well as etched stone seals and inscriptions. The area also offers the opportunity to view rock art, ancient burial mounds, and unique ringing stones.
  • Siruguppa: The name Siruguppa means "pile/ heap of wealth". On a fort here, stands an old temple dedicated to Lord Shambhulinga which is believed to be the oldest temple here.

The image of the deity is made of black stone that is holding a club in his hand and beside him stands his vehicle, the peacock. Tourist Attractions

  • Daroji (T. Sandur) is situated about 48 km from Sandur and about 28 km from Toranagal, connected both by bus and train. It is best known for the big tank near it. This tank, which is said to have been built by Tipu, has been constructed by throwing a huge dam, about two and a half miles long and in places 45 feet high, across a valley through which flows the Narihalla. In May 1851, the tank breached in two places, and the mass of water that rushed out destroyed the old village of Daroji. The present village (New Daroji) was built later on. The tank now irrigates a large extent of land. Excellent fish are caught in it and sent to the Ballari market.
  • Kampli (D. Ballari): is a town lying 33 km northwest of Hosapete and 22 km from Kamalapura. Until 1851, this village was the headquarters of what is now Hosapete taluk, which was then known as Kampli taluk. It has been an important place since ancient days. It was a Chalukyan capital in 1064 and the Cholas had once conquered it. Later, it is mentioned by Ibn Batuta as one of ‘the strongholds of the original chiefs of Anegondi and still, later, it was a kind of outpost of the city of Vijayanagara. Its fort, which is built of the dark rock found locally in the bed of the Tungabhadra, stands on the edge of the river. It is said to have been built by one of the Palayagars of Ballari. The ‘PETA ‘, which is outside the fort, is also equally crowded. The streets in it are extraordinarily narrow. The great heroes, Kampala Raya and his son Kadugali Kumara Rama, died fighting the invading Muslim forces. Kampli formerly had a weaving industry. It also produced jaggery from the sugarcane grown on its wetlands and was also noted for wood-carving and manufacture of toys.
  • Kappagallu (T. Ballari): is a village 12 km northeast of Ballari and about four kilometers from Moka Ballari road. The granite hill within its limits is known as the ‘Peacock Hill’. This name is said to have been given to the hill as it was the ‘home ‘of several peafowls in the olden days. The hill is now chiefly noteworthy as containing the remains of an extensive pre-historic settlement.
  • There are three ash mounds situated at the foot of the hill. Such mounds found in some places in the northern part of this State and Andhra Pradesh have been ascribed to the Neolithic age by some scholars.
  • Kenchanagudda (T. Siruguppa): Ramanadurga is a hill station near Sandur town and about 20 kms from Hospet. The Trigonometr) is a village on the bank of the Tungabhadra, about six km southwest of Siruguppa. The place contains two forts, a lower fort in which most of its inhabitants used to reside formerly and an upper one on the top of the rock called Kenchanagudda, which gives the village its name and on which Kenchana Gowda, a local chief, had his mansion. After abandoning the lower fort, the population moved interior to a distance of about a mile from the river. At the foot of this rock is the temple of Gangadhara. Built into its southern wall, is a long inscription, dated in the year 1708, giving the genealogy of Kenchana Gowda and stating that he built the temple and the upper fort. According to this record, he had three sons, of whom one Virupaksha followed him as the chief. This latter, who was called Pampapati, was succeeded by his widow Tangamma, whose name is well-known in the locality. She is said to have narrowly escaped capture by Tipu Sultan on one occasion. A story is told about the end of her rule, according to which she had two sons, who were both captured by Tipu. One was murdered and the other was converted to Islam. Fearing that this convert would succeed her, it is said, she made over her possession to the East India Company, in exchange for a life pension. The place has the cave of Siddha Malaysia., a saint, with a Kannada inscription near it. The village also contains a Vrindavana (tomb) of a disciple of the famous saint Raghavendraswami of Mantralaya.
  • Kundalini (T. Ballari): is a large village, 20 km west-north-west of Ballari, and is on the railway line between Ballari and Hosapete. Two Rashtrakuta inscriptions dated in the years 947 and 971 A.D. were found here, the latter mentioning the setting. up of an image of Skanda (Kumaraswamy). Three grants of the Western Chalukya king, Vikramaditya VI, and one of Jagadekamalla of the same dynasty, belonging to the 11th and l2th centuries, were also discovered here. These frequently mention “the forest where Subramanya (Kumaraswami) sat in penance”. There are inscriptions belonging to the Hoysala and Vijayanagara periods also. There were found also two stones sculptured with figures commemorating local heroes, besides a sati stone. East of the village, there is a line of black rocks formed by the out-crop of a trap dyke. Some five km from Kundalini, to the north of the pass leading to Toranagal, through the low-lying line of hills running down from the ‘ Copper Mountain’, is found a curious ash-mound, the origin of which gave rise to much speculation. (The local people call the spot” Boodikanive’ (ash-pass) or” Boodigunta” (ash-hill). Kudatini is one of the centers of blanket-weaving in the district. Very fine and costly blankets are made here.
  • Kurugodu (T. Ballari): is a village situated at a distance of 28 km from Ballari on Ballari-Siruguppa road and lies close under the eastern end of Kurugodu hills which are conspicuous from Ballari to the north-north-west. It is a historical place. Inscriptions show that as far back as the beginning of the seventh century, it formed a part of the possessions of the early Chalukyas of Badami. Later, under the Chalukyas of Kalyana, it was the chief town of the Ballakunde-300 division. About 1185, it was also for some time a residence of the Western Chalukya kings. It was reduced in 1191 by the Hoysala king Ballala II. Much later, Kurugodu was one of the forts in the possession of Palayagar Hanumappa Nayaka referred to under Ballari. The present village and the fort were built by Devappa, a descendant of Hanumappa Nayaka, in 1701-02. Haidar Ali took this place in 1775 and probably improved the fort. The citadel on the top of Hanumanta hill and the lower fort is connected by a path up the hill, protected at intervals by circular bastions. At the western end of the village, is the temple of Basaveshwara with a conspicuous modern gopura. Within it is a large Nandi or Bull of Shiva, which is a monolithic sculpture, about l2 feet in height. Attached to the temple, is what is known as ‘Nilamma’s matha’ held in great esteem. Nilamma was the daughter of a resident of Sindigeri, five miles east of Kurugodu, who lived during Haidar Ali’s rule. She is said to have led a very virtuous life and is credited with having performed miracles. There are several viragals in the village. On the site of old Kurugodu, there are also nine old temples forming one group and a tenth standing alone on the other side of the Hanumanta hill. All these temples have been constructed of granite without the use of mortar. The inscription in one of them, dated 1175-76 A.D., mentions its erection by a merchant. The architectural aspect of these temples has been dealt with in Chapter II.
  • Moka (T. Ballari): the headquarters of the Hubballi of the same name, stands on the bank of the river Hagari and is at a distance of about 17 km from Ballari city. There is an agricultural farm here, and a large area of land has been brought under irrigation. The Malleshwaraswamy temple here attracts several pilgrims, especially during the car festival.
  • Ramanadurga (T. Sandur): is a hill station at a distance of about 16 km from Sandur town and about 20 km from Hosapete town. The Trigonometrical Station here is at a height of 3,256 feet from sea level. (A similar station at Sandur is at a height of 1,815 feet from sea level). On all the sides of this hill station, the ground falls sharply, thus affording excellent views into the Sandur valley on the one side and over the western taluks on the other. The place gets its name from the village and the fort of the same name, which stands on the southern end of the plateau. There are remains of the old fort, in the form of walls of enormous blocks of stones. According to a local tradition, it was built by Prince Kumara Rama of Kampili, a great hero. The Ramadeva temple here is said to be named after Kumara Rama (who had been hidden in this area for some time by Minister Bychappa Nayaka to save his life). This is confirmed by an inscription found at the place. Though it is not a contemporary record, it clearly states that a temple was erected in memory of Ramanatha Odeya (i.e., Kumara Rama) by his admirers in appreciation of his supreme sacrifice. The epigraph is dated in the Shaka year 1450 when Krishnadeva Raya was ruling. The present temple of Ramadeva, where this inscription was found, is reported to have been rebuilt out of the ruins of an older temple the one referred to in the inscription. During the Second World War, army units had been stationed here. A hospital was built here to nurse wounded soldiers. A sanatorium set up here was used mostly for the benefit of soldiers and Europeans and later closed. There was a handicrafts training center here during 1943-44.
  • Siruguppa: The name Siruguppa perhaps means ” pile of wealth ” and is well-earned by it on account of its rich wetlands watered by the channels from the river. On a bastion of the fort here, stands an old temple of Shambhulinga, the oldest temple of the place. The temple of “Kotturu Basavanna” is a modern structure with a conspicuous gopura. It was built in 1887 by a rich local merchant.
  • Sandur: The district of Ballari perhaps evokes images of dust, mining, and scorching heat in a tourist’s mind. However, one particular place here makes you feel like in the cool environs and greenery of the Western Ghats in this district – Sandur. The high altitude of Sandur, located around 900 meters makes for a pleasant climate and rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The around 48 km stretch of the spindle-shaped Sandur Hill range starts from the TB Dam in Hosapete Taluk and ends at Swamihalli in Sandur Taluk. This long and tall mountain range plays a vital role in impacting the climate of north-eastern Karnataka. The forest type in this spindle-shaped hill range is entirely different from the ecosystem of the plains of the Deccan Plateau. Narihalla, the lifeline of Sandur, ends in a dam built near Taranagara. Such was Sandur’s natural beauty that even Mahatma Gandhi in his visit to this place during the 1930s, so enamoured by its beauty, quoted “See Sandur in September”.Sandur’s landscape also gets carpeted with the Neela Kurinji (a shrub mainly found in the forests of the Western Ghats) blooms which happens once in 12 years. Patches of purplish-blue flowers bedecks these hill ranges of Sandur taluk and have been attracting nature lovers and botanists. The last bloom happened in 2017. The presence of Neela Kurinji goes to show the rich biodiversity in Sandur forests. Historically, it was the capital of the Sandur State, a small principality, ruled by the Ghorpade kings. And as per legends, it is said to have been also called Skandapuri (meaning city of Skanda or Lord Kumaraswamy, whose temple is situated nearby). Sandur is also famous for the 8th Century Parvathi Temple built by the Chalukyas. The fauna and avian life found here are also truly remarkable. Today, it is home to leopards, Sloth Bears, wolves, jackals, Four-horned Antelopes, etc. The Sandur Valley and its surrounding area have more than 200 resident and migratory birds. The residents include the rare Yellow-throated Bulbul along with Orange-headed Thrush, Red Spurfowl, Puff-throated Babbler, White-throated Fantail, Blue-capped Rock Thrush, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Verditer Flycatcher, Red-breasted Flycatcher, etc. It is indeed a birder’s paradise.
  • Thorangal: Thorangal is a village in Ballary district, on the banks of the Tungabhadra river, 31 km from Ballari city. Daroji lake, Jagadguru Renukacharya Ashrama, and Daroji bear sanctuary are close to Thorangal.
  • Yemmiganur (T. Ballari), situated at a distance of about 46 km away from Ballari, has the samadhi of a great saint known as Jade Tata.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

tourist places near sandur

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

tourist places near sandur

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

tourist places near sandur

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

tourist places near sandur

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
