Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Individual Thailand vacations shaped around your passions

Thailand is a renowned beach destination, but our specialists know there’s far more to it than its palm-fringed sands. Having journeyed the breadth of the country, they can advise you on the best places to visit, based on your preferences, to get the most out of your vacation to Thailand.

Inland, you’ll find temples in the shape of Isaan’s Khmer complexes and the UNESCO-protected ancient capital of Siam at Sukhothai as well as, from more recent history, the Bridge on the River Kwai. National parks foster elephants and gibbons, and hills preserve rich tribal cultures. There are also the cities, which provide a route into exploring Thailand’s food, such as the street markets in Chiang Mai and cooking classes in Bangkok . Along the coast, you’ll find sleepy villages where you can watch local fishermen bringing in the day’s catch, while limestone islands rising from the sea make the focal points for rewarding cruises.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Thailand

Tipping is becoming more and more ingrained in Thai culture, so we recommend tipping around 10% in restaurants, if a service charge isn’t already included. Tipping tuk-tuk drivers, guides, and other service workers isn’t mandatory but is appreciated, and we can advise you on recommended amounts.

In Thailand, you’ll find coconut-milk curries, steamed whole fish, and expertly seasoned snacks almost anywhere you go, but the best place to eat them is in open-air street food stalls and small restaurants popular with the locals. Thai cuisine brings together a complex balance of fresh herbs and spices, like kaffir lime and lemongrass, to create dishes that are sweet, salty, and sour all at once. We can arrange an authentic cooking class so you can recreate the tastes when you get back home.

To drink, you could sample malty local beers, such as Singha, or a refreshing Sabai Sabai cocktail made with Thailand’s spiced molasses-based spirit Mekhong. For something non-alcoholic, tangy fresh fruit juices, coconut milk straight from the shell, and chai yen, a local iced tea with milk, are widely available.

The official language spoken in Thailand is Central Thai, also known as ‘Siamese’, but many people also speak English. You may also hear Southern Thai, Northern Thai, Isan, and Phu Thai, which are separate languages but are closely related to Central Thai and have historically been grouped as one Thai language.

The currency of Thailand is the Thai baht (THB, ฿), which consists of notes in denominations of 1000, 500, 100, 50, and 20 baht, as well as coins in denominations of 10, 5, 2, and 1 baht. There are coins for 50 and 25 satangs, too, but these are rarely used.

ATMs are widespread in Thailand, especially in major cities. Most machines take all credit cards, as well as Cirrus, Plus, Maestro, and Solo cards. Some ATMs charge a fee, which is typically around 200THB per withdrawal. You’ll need cash for smaller restaurants and tipping.

Thailand is known for its palm-fringed beaches and lively Bangkok streets, but there’s a lot more to do and see if you’d like to explore further, including ancient capital ruins, vast swathes of forested mountains, and a rich cultural heritage.

If you’re a history lover, you could learn about the Siam Kingdom as your guide walks you through the expansive, intricately carved ruins in Sukhothai or Ayutthaya . If nature piques your interest, you could take a night safari in Khao Yai National Park to spot wild elephants, sambar, and gibbons. Or if you prefer soaking in the local culture, we can arrange a visit to a Hmong and Lahu village in the hills near Chiang Khong where you can learn how to decorate clothing using traditional dyeing techniques.

Thailand offers a diverse array of accommodation options, from luxury villas on the beach to family-run hotels in the heart of the city, as well as eco-friendly lodges resting upon jungle-clad hillsides. But you don’t have to choose just one — some of the most rewarding Thailand trips take you across the country, allowing you to experience a tapestry of Thai living.

Take a look at where you could stay on your Thailand trip.

Bangkok provides a launchpad into the rest of Thailand, including the pearly white beaches of the south and remote villages of the north, but it also offers a vibrant introduction to the country’s culinary culture with street food aplenty.

Then, you can head to Khao Lak , a more tranquil alternative to Phuket, to explore secluded coves and unwind on powder-soft beaches. The karst-carved scenery of Khao Sok National Park is nearby where you can spend the day hiking to hidden waterfalls or meeting the resident elephants at the ethical Elephant Hills Camp . Alternatively, you could head further north to Chiang Rai to experience authentic local life with fewer crowds around. Around here, you can learn about tea and coffee farming, explore hillside villages, and delve into highly decorative Buddhist architecture dating back centuries.

It takes around 22 hours to fly from either New York or Los Angeles to Bangkok, Thailand. We recommend flying with Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and a few other airlines, which we can advise on.

The time zone in Thailand is UTC +7, and daylight saving time isn’t observed so the clocks don’t ever change.

The best way of getting around in Thailand depends on where you want to go and the activities you’re doing there. If you’re heading from the busyness of Bangkok to the tranquil beach resorts of the south, taking a domestic flight will be simplest. For other routes, we can advise if it’s best to take the train, ferry, or a private car arranged by us. Once at your destination, you can explore by foot or take an open-air tuk-tuk to cover more ground with panoramic views.

US citizens don’t currently need a visa for stays of up to 30 days in Thailand if arriving by air. If you are crossing into Thailand from one of its land borders, stays of up to 30 days are permitted without a visa, too.

Your passport must be valid for six months after the date of departure from Thailand and have a minimum of one unstamped double page free.

You should check with your doctor to find out which vaccinations you need for Thailand, but you should be up to date with your home country’s recommend vaccinations as a minimum. You can also take a look at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention website for suggested vaccinations.

If you’re traveling to Thailand from a country that’s considered to have a risk of yellow fever by the World Health Organization (WHO), then you may be asked to provide proof of vaccination against the disease upon arrival.

Thai people are very tolerant of visitors and don’t expect you to conform to their culture, but take care to respect the monarchy and Buddhist religion. It’s polite to avoid raising your voice in public as Thai people are typically softly spoken and avoid confrontation. Finally, if someone bows with their hands together (a ‘wai’), it’s polite to do the same in return.

You must treat any portrait of the King or members of the royal family with respect, which extends to currency and stamps. If you drop a Thai coin or note, be sure to pick it up, and never stand on a coin or note if you see one on the floor. When sending letters or postcards, use the small sponge available for attaching the stamp to a letter instead of licking it.

When visiting a temple in Thailand, you’ll be expected to cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes and hat. Some temples, such as the Grand Palace in Bangkok, ask that you wear clothing that covers your body down to the ankle.

Once inside, don’t touch anything that may be of religious significance, such as Buddha statues, altars, and burial grounds. You should also avoid pointing the soles of your feet toward a Buddha image — or anyone, for that matter.

We loved everything about our trip to Japan and Thailand. The hotels, tour guides and restaurant recommendations were all excellent.

I usually do all my travel planning independently but found myself desperately in need of time away, without the time to actually plan the trip. I did some research and settled on Jacada based on their other excellent reviews. I used Jacada to help me plan my first trip to SE Asia (Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for 2.5 weeks), which…

We had an incredible experience planning our honeymoon with Leanne and Gilda from Jacada. They crafted a personalized itinerary that exceeded our expectations, taking into account our desires and budget. Leanne's insight on different islands and cities was spot-on, and the detailed emails, including maps of international airports, made our journey seamless. The constant communication and check-ins added a sense…

Jacada planned our trip of a lifetime to Vietnam and Thailand in January/February 2024 for 3 weeks. From the moment we landed in Hanoi, they prioritized our entry through customs to a no wait line and transferred us to our guide and driver. It was seamless and professional the entire trip. We experienced the culture and people in authentic day…

Rosanna and Cathy helped us execute our DREAM honeymoon! We visited Thailand and their recommendations and itinerary were perfectly catered for us. They were extremely communicative, helpful and responsive. Thank you thank you thank you! You gave us memories to last a lifetime.

Why Use a Travel Agency for Your Thailand Trip?

In this digital age, planning a trip to a foreign country could be as simple as a few clicks. But would you risk missing out on hidden gems and cultural nuances? By partnering with a trusted travel agency , you're ensuring that your Thailand trip is tailor-made to your preferences, ensuring that you get the most out of your travel experience.

Understanding Travel Agencies

Travel agencies are the unsung heroes of the tourism industry. They handle everything from flight and hotel bookings to providing itineraries, ensuring that travelers have a seamless and enjoyable journey.

What Does a Travel Agency Do?

A travel agency takes the stress out of travel planning. Their job isn't just about booking flights and accommodation. They listen to your needs, advise on the best travel times, provide local insights, and design tailor-made itineraries that suit your preferences. They handle the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Picture this – you're in Chiang Mai, known for its elephant sanctuaries. Instead of visiting a typical touristy elephant park, your travel agent, with their local knowledge, arranges a visit to an ethical sanctuary where you can feed, bathe, and spend quality time with these magnificent creatures, contributing positively to animal welfare. That's the personalized touch a travel agency can bring to your trip.

Benefits of Using Travel Agencies for International Travel

Using a travel agency, especially for international travel, offers numerous benefits. First, they save you time and stress. Navigating through hundreds of hotel reviews and trying to find the best deals can be overwhelming. Travel agencies have the expertise and resources to do that efficiently.

Second, travel agencies have insider information and connections that most individuals do not. They can get you better deals, exclusive access to experiences, and help with any travel issues that arise.

And finally, travel agencies provide a safety net. In case of unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations or health emergencies, they will be there to provide support and solutions.

I enjoyed working with Zicasso’s tour company. They were very responsive to my request and planned the perfect itinerary for my family. All the day tours and the guides were highly experienced and a lot of fun to spend time with. The elephant sanctuary was clearly a highlight, as were both boat tours of the amazing islands off Phuket. All the hotel accommodations and services were top-notch. We especially enjoyed the restaurant recommendations in each area. The trip app was very helpful and we appreciated the daily communication and document sharing of boarding passes. Overall, we truly enjoyed our first visit to Thailand. It is a very beautiful country, but more importantly, we found its people very friendly and welcoming. This was my fifth trip using Zicasso and they have never disappointed me or my grandchildren, who have accompanied me each time. They introduced me to our travel company and fulfilled all our needs and beyond.

My husband and I booked our honeymoon in Thailand with Zicasso's travel agency. We worked with our travel agent to plan it and the itinerary was incredible! I barely had to do anything. He booked all of our activities, hotels, and transfers. Transportation: We went to four locations (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and Krabi) and each time we traveled internally, a guide would drop us off and pick us up. Truly door-to-door service! We also had a private guide and driver for each of our planned activities. Our domestic travel was so incredibly easy and we were super lucky to have all of them be on time and seamless! Our tour operator monitored all the flights and before our honeymoon, made sure to update a couple whose times had changed to ensure we got to our destinations with enough time. Activities: We wanted our honeymoon to be equal parts adventure and relaxation. We spent the first half of our trip in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We toured temples, did a street food tour, took a day trip to a floating market, spent a day learning to cook with a local family, spent a day with rescue elephants, and visited a gorgeous national park, to name a few things. All were private tours with private guides! A shout-out to our amazing guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We then spent intentionally unstructured time at the beaches of Koh Samui and Krabi (I’d recommend Krabi over Koh Samui (I was the one who added Koh Samui to the itinerary, but should have listened to our travel agent!). Krabi was so perfect for a honeymoon. Accommodations: All were five stars and beautiful! We had cute honeymoon welcome gifts everywhere we went. In summary, it was so worth working with our travel team to plan a stress-free honeymoon. We had an incredible time and couldn’t have loved it more!

Although frequent travelers, this was our first trip to Asia. We greatly wanted to visit Thailand, but were uncertain how to proceed in planning our trip. Through Zicasso, we came into contact with our travel agent. We had great conversations with him about our interests, what we were hoping to experience in Thailand, and our travel style. He put together an initial travel itinerary, which we subsequently modified in follow-up conversations. Our agent was great to work with and we felt very involved in the process of setting up our trip. We have now returned from the trip and it was wonderful, or as my wife keeps telling people, magical. The attention to detail was impressive. The accommodations were first-rate. Travel occurred as planned, with air and land travel within Thailand going without a hitch. My wife has food allergies and was very concerned about how she would manage in Thailand. Our agent made sure our hotels and excursion providers were well informed of her dietary restrictions ahead of time and she was able to relax and enjoy herself without worry. As an example, when we went to the breakfast buffet at our hotel in Bangkok, a staff member approached us and went over their buffet, telling my wife which dishes to avoid. The best part of our trip was our guide. He was a wonderful person who took great joy in sharing his vast knowledge of Thailand with us. The excursions we took were enriched by his presence. Our agent was readily available to answer any questions we had as our travels progressed. We felt that his company’s resources were available to us throughout our travels and that he had our backs. I would like to emphasize that we were extremely pleased with the company and are highly recommending them as we recount our trip with friends and family. I would not hesitate to work with them again in planning future travels.

Our trip to Thailand was amazing! Everything was planned perfectly by the agency. Pickup from the airports was on time and our tour guides were beyond spectacular. The knowledge they presented during our tours and drives was very helpful. The lunch places they took us were absolutely delicious! Def will refer our friends and family.

Our family of four traveled to Japan, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and the Hakone area. The Zicasso travel agency put together great properties. We loved the locations of each and their amenities. We had excellent seats on the bullet train. Our driver and tour guide in Kyoto were outstanding! We felt there was definitely a communication misstep with our plans for Tokyo however. Our driver/guide was very lovely, but not very definitive on what we were doing each day. We felt we had communicated with the driver and the travel company as to what we wanted to do, but for example, when we went to do our food tour of Tokyo, it was paired with a visit to the fish market. We asked if the food tour was after the market, to which our guide said yes. However, about two hours into the fish market we realized that was his idea of the food tour. There was no specific plan of what we were to try and no explanation of the items. Instead, we walked around and bought a few things we wanted to try. We shared everything as we were saving room for the food tour that really never happened. It was frustrating as we felt our guide was more of a driver and less of a guide. Communication was definitely a factor, which is why we hired the travel agency.

Day 1 - Bangkok bangkok bustle

Welcome to Bangkok, the beating heart of Thailand, where futuristic skyscrapers rub shoulders with ancient temples. After dropping your bags and giving your first sawasdee ka a go (no one said Thai was easy), meet up with your crew and get ready to explore one of the most fun cities on Earth.

We’ll head toward the capital’s tuk-tuk mad streets and grab a three-wheeled ride to a sky-high revolving rooftop bar for welcome drinks with a view from the Tetris tower to the gold-roofed Grand Palace. Then, after getting a lay of the land from the clouds, it's time for our first taste of spicy Thai cuisine.

We’ll dine in style along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, which snakes its way through the urban chaos, before rounding out our Bangkok welcome with a nightcap at one of the trendiest cocktail bars in town. Congrats, you made it to Thailand!

Day 2  - Bangkok urban tales

Bangkok's famous for blending different elements together, and today, we'll see a bit of it all so that by the evening, you'll understand how this 15th-century trading post became the most visited city on Earth.

We'll start with a walking tour of the town and a deep dive into the importance of Buddhism in Thai culture and daily life. With a local guide leading the way, we'll roam through Banglamphu, checking out the dazzling spires of Wat Ratchanadda and the Golden Mount as we discover legends and folklore that influenced modern-day Bangkok.

From there, we're heading to a cooking class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine from an expert chef. Your evening's free, so head out for dinner and drinks with the crew, then check out Khao San Road's chaos and give that world-famous nightlife a go!

Day 3 -  Bangkok, Chiang Mai North Country

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we're heading to the airport and swapping the capital city for lowkey Chiang Mai in the mountains of northern Thailand.

Set between dense jungle and rice-paddy countryside, this city of just over 100,000 people is a mix of ancient ruins, historic sites, and natural wonders. After dropping your bags at the hotel and freshening up, kick back and relax, or head out and explore on your own.

That evening, we're off to dinner and drinks in town. If you're beat from traveling, head for the hotel afterward; otherwise, for some more fun, check out a local cabaret with the rest of the crew.

Day 4 - Chiang Mai Friendly Giants

Thailand may be known for its crazy capital, golden beaches, and spicy cuisine, but in the north, it’s the wildlife that’s impossible to miss. Elephants have played an important role in the region for centuries, and today, we're going to a humane sanctuary for an experience you'll be bragging about for years.

Our local partner has a 22-point ethical vetting process, so when you meet our mahout and learn about the importance of elephants in Thai culture, you’ll be doing it the right way. We’ll hand over some snacks and watch these smiling creatures eat up before we sit down for lunch ourselves. From there, we’ll head deeper into lush jungle to learn about the Karen people and their beautifully rich culture.

After a day with Chiang Mai’s friendliest locals, head to the famous night market for some Pad Thai or mango sticky rice with friends, and then grab drinks at the bars nearby.

thai monk

Day 5 - Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta to the islands

Today, we're grabbing an early bite at the hotel and then catching a flight down south for a beach getaway. We’ll skip the more touristy areas like Krabi and Koh Samui in the Bay of Thailand and instead head to the beautiful Andaman Sea, where we’ll cruise past iconic Phang Nga Bay and wind up on the sandy shores of Koh Lanta.

Check out the Old Town with the crew—with traditional wooden shophouses lining the streets to the bay and a super local vibe, it's like stepping back in time. After a bit of market fun and island history, grab a Singha at the relaxing beach bars that dot the coast.

That evening, we'll all meet up for sunset drinks and a seaside dinner to welcome us to paradise in the Thai islands.

beach island

Day 6 - Koh Lanta Paradise boat club

Grab a hat and sunscreen; it's time for some island hopping. Today, we're cruising out on the blue-green Andaman Sea for a full day of swimming, laughing, and living the tropical good life.

Expect lush islands and hidden lagoons hugging limestone cliffs. Dive in, snorkel vibrant coral reefs, and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins jumping just off spectacular beaches. You'll have lunch on board as you chill out in total paradise and make memories to last a lifetime.

After a day of bliss, we’ll turn back to Koh Lanta as the sun begins to set on Thailand. Head toward one of the island’s laid-back beach bars for spicy Tom Yum Goong with friends.

Day 7 - Koh Lanta PAddle away

Unwind, sleep in, have a relaxing morning, and then, if you're feeling adventurous, get ready for some mangrove magic. Today, you've got the option to hop in kayaks for an excursion through Koh Lanta's maze of winding waterways and tangled roots.

These lush forests, which play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem, are teeming with biodiversity, so keep your eyes peeled! After paddling through the glassy labyrinth, you’ll wind up back in the old town where you can grab lunch with friends.

That afternoon, you can explore the trails of Mu Ko Lanta National Park (just watch your things; monkey theft is no joke), check out Long Beach, or head south for the sleepier scene at Kantiang Bay. Just make sure you're back in town at night; it's time for a farewell dinner as we celebrate a week of amazing scenery, chaotic cities, and brand-new best friends.

sunset

Day 8 - Koh Lanta Sawasdse e Ka

Now that's how you visit Thailand! After a week of Thai adventure, today, we’re cruising out of Koh Lanta and making our way back to Krabi and the real world.

If you're heading home, safe travels! If you're one of the lucky ones, extending your stay in Thailand or adventuring further into the heart of Southeast Asia, we are fully on board. There's tons more to see out here. You've got everything from beachy island paradise to jungles, megacities, and ancient ruins at your fingertips!

A rental car in Cambodia may be fun, a motorbike in Laos might be even more (just be safe). If you're up for another great FTLO adventure, check out nearby Bali or Vietnam!

about Thailand

Thailand, affectionately known as the Land of Smiles, is conveniently located in the heart of Southeast Asia. This tropical haven is renowned for its culturally rich tapestry, steeped in history and tradition, its phenomenal cuisine, and its breathtaking natural landscapes, ranging from verdant mountains and dense forests around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to picturesque beaches and pristine islands in the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand. With so much to see, eat, and do, it's no surprise that tourism is hugely important to the economy. While some Thailand vacation packages focus on just one aspect of this amazing country, our Thailand tours are geared toward seeing it all.

Thailand Trip FAQs

When is the best time/month to travel to thailand.

With such a warm climate all year round, Thailand is such a great destination to travel. Whether you decide to explore the bustling streets of Bangkok, dive into the crystal-clear waters of the islands, or indulge in the vibrant street food in the north, Thailand has it all. Don't worry too much about the occasional tropical showers; it’s a refreshing break from the heat before the sun comes back out. We operate our small group tours in Thailand all year round.

How many days in Thailand is enough?

We recommend setting aside 2-3 weeks for your solo trip to Thailand. With so much to explore and experience, it's important to allow yourself enough time to fully immerse in the wonders of this incredible country. Navigating the various transportation options can be overwhelming at first, but fear not! Our tours in Thailand are designed to take away all the hassles and worries of planning your trip and travelling alone. We’ll handle all the tough/boring stuff, giving you the freedom to enjoy each and every day to the fullest 🙌🏼

Do I need a visa to travel Thailand?

For most travellers, Thailand is a very easy country to visit with a simple ‘Visa on Arrival’ process. This includes a long list of different countries including; UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and most of Europe. Be sure to do your own research, as each country/passport will have different entry requirements, and the rules can often change. It's your responsibility to ensure you've ticked all the necessary boxes to enter Thailand hassle-free. *You must check your visa eligibility as we are not visa experts. The information above is general in nature. Here’s a blog that we put together to help; ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.

What injections/vaccinations do I need for Thailand?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination/immunisation history on file. All the destinations and areas we travel to are generally low-risk, but best to be on the safe side! Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website.

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions in Thailand?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to ensure you arrive on tour with us in Thailand without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government.

What kind of people join these group tours?

It doesn't matter whether you're travelling solo, with a friend, or adventuring as a couple. Our trips attract a variety of different people from all corners of the world with a common goal of having the BEST time with like-minded people. Our trips are super popular for people looking to explore new places but don't want the worry of doing it alone or don't have the time to plan a trip themselves. Jumping on a group tour in Thailand is a super popular, convenient and hassle-free way to travel!

Are group tours in Thailand worth it? Why would I not just travel solo?

Planning a solo trip can be daunting, requiring careful consideration and a lot of time. But guess what? Our Thailand group tours are designed to make your life easier and your travel experience stress-free! From the moment you land, we handle all the logistics and nitty-gritty details, including airport pickup, comfortable accommodations, seamless transportation, engaging local activities, and delicious meals. With our tours, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy your adventure in Thailand, knowing that every aspect has been expertly taken care of.

I am looking to come alone, do many people travel solo?

Yes, absolutely! Most people actually come alone, with there often being a few people travelling together either as friends or as a couple. Our trips are perfect for solo travellers as you'll make friends from the moment you arrive, and you'll have the confidence and security of doing it as a group.

How much money do you need for 2 weeks in Thailand?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Thailand adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400, but this should be the bare minimum. We suggest working from an average of £400-500/$500-700 over 2 weeks, this will cover things like shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What should I book first, the flights or the tour?

Great question! We always suggest getting the trip locked in first before booking flights. This way, you won’t be left disappointed if the trip goes full and you’ve already booked your flights. There are usually plenty of flight tickets available, but the spaces are limited with our trips, and the trips fill up pretty fast. We suggest booking your trip first, followed by your flight, and then purchasing your travel insurance to cover all eventualities. Getting these three out of the way as soon as possible is a good idea.

How far in advance do you recommend booking my trip to Thailand?

The average traveller typically books their trip 3-4 months in advance, which usually means there are plenty of options when it comes to dates. If you decide to book last minute, be prepared for limited availability. If you have your heart set on a specific date or trip, consider placing a deposit right away.

I’ve been looking at a few companies, what makes Feel Free Travel different?

If you're asking this question, you've probably not read what our incredible travellers are saying in the reviews . You would have noticed already that we are insanely passionate about sharing life-changing experiences with our groups. When we travel, it's more like a group of mates with that one friend who thankfully knows where they're going. Our group sizes are small and intimate, averaging 12-16 travellers. If you've not already, click here to join the 'Feel Free Family - Facebook Group' .

Is it possible to book a private tour of Thailand with a group of friends?

We specialise in bringing solo travellers together who arrive as complete strangers and soon become best friends/extended travel family. With that being said, we have been known to offer private tours subject to availability. If you send us an email to [email protected] one of the team will be in touch and see what we can do… no promises!

Naa was an excellent guide, very helpful, well-organised and provided plenty of opportunity for extra experiences. The tour covered a good range of experiences. The overnight train was excellent, the visit to the H'mong Village was interesting, as was the elephant hospital and orchid farm, and particularly Kanchanaburi. Our group was very small but harmonious, making it easy to get around. Naa provided plenty of time at each venue to ensure that no-one felt rushed and everyone had time to see what they wanted. The bikes in Chiang Mai were excellent, those in Sukhothai were functional but not of the same quality. The picnic in Sukhothai was brilliant! Well organised, and the food was of an extremely high quality. Our hosts went above and beyond, including mopping the floor before we sat down :)

Had a luxury cabin, lived up to expectations. Food good , local produce, could vary the breakfast menu. Loved the catamaran, plenty of space for all. Crew friendly. Snorkelling- could choose less popular tourist places, as sometimes very crowded and quite scary for less experienced swimmers, especially near Phi Phi, not enjoyable to dodge other boats and too far to swim from boat to see fish.

We had a lovely time in Thailand. Nick was very lovely and a wonderful guide. We enjoyed his company during our tour of Bangkok and Kanchanaburi. He was very informative and guided us very well during the trip. The Hong Island trip was lovely although it was a group tour. The group tour guide was lovely and guided us well throughout the tour. The driver service was great too and on time. The guides who picked and dropped us from Airport in Krabi provided good information and advice. The hotels services were good. We did not have any problems during our stay. Staff were very polite and nice. We really enjoyed out trip and it was very well organised. We would definitely recommend Odynovo to our friends and family. Ganu

What people love about luxury tours in thailand.

Overall my experience was excellent. The tour started out poorly because Intrepid had planned the tour to begin in Bangkok during a holiday period. The palace was closed because the king was in town (Intrepid should have known this and we did not get to see the palace) and the traffic getting out of Bangkok was very bad. It took 4 hours to go 78 miles. After that, the tour was as expected and very good.
10/10 recommend! Best way to experience Thailand, hands down.
Fantastic trip. Don’t hesitate to book. We did the 4 days one because I was nervous about being stuck on a boat for four days but they planned great stops and activities and I never once felt bored or like I want to get off the boat. The trip went around the most magnificent scenery and the food was amazing. Would do it again in a heart beat.

Southeast Asia Travel Guide

Last Updated: November 27, 2023

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Backpackers have been traveling through Southeast Asia since the late 1960s and early 1970s, leaving a well-worn trail around the region.

Starting in beautiful Thailand, the trail makes its way to up-and-coming Laos, through Vietnam, and to the temples of Angkor Wat. It then winds back into Thailand, where people head south to party in the Thai islands before moving down to Malaysia and Singapore.

There are a few variations to the trail, but this is what it mostly covers.

I’ve been visiting this region since 2004 and spent years living in Thailand . I love backpacking Southeast Asia and have written extensively about it as I know it like the back of my hand.

It’s an especially great region for new travelers because it’s easy to travel around, it’s safe, and there are lots of other travelers you can meet. But it’s also perfect for veteran travelers too as there are tons of off-the-beaten-path destinations that the standard backpacker trail doesn’t cover.

In short, Southeast Asia has something for every traveler — and every budget.

This Southeast Asia travel guide will help you travel the region like a pro, ensuring you save money and make the most of your time in this fun, gorgeous, and lively corner of the world.

Top 5 things to see and do in southeast asia.

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

1. Admire Angkor Wat

One of the greatest human creations in history, the Angkor Wat temple complex is best explored over the course of a few days. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site created by the Khmer Empire and absolutely enormous. Temples to visit include Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple which has 216 gigantic stone face carvings, and Ta Prohm. I spent three days here and that simply wasn’t enough. A one-day pass is $37 USD, while a 1-week pass is $72 USD. If you’re here for multiple days, be sure to hire a driver and see some of the more out of the way ruins away from the main temple complex (and the crowds).

2. Explore Bangkok

Bangkok is the hub of travel activity in Southeast Asia. You can get anywhere you want from here. Though I hated it at first, the more I’ve spent time here the more I love it. Bangkok is like an onion whose many layers need to be peeled back. Some things not to miss include the spectacular Bangkok Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Chatuchak Market and Asiatique, and a canal trip on the Chao Phraya River. This is a city for foodies and wild nightlife.

3. Relax on some tropical islands

No visit to Southeast Asia would be complete without a visit to at least one of the thousands of tropical islands in the region. My top five include the Perhentian Islands (Malaysia), Rabbit Island (Cambodia), Ko Lanta (Thailand), and Boracay (Philippines). Lombok Island (Indonesia) has a chill vibe with unspoiled, perfect “desert island” beaches. There’s so many islands to visit. Be sure to add at least one to your trip. The country guides will have more information for you.

4. See Ha Long Bay

Sailing trips to this island-filled bay with stunning emerald waters, limestone formations, and marine life give you an appreciation for the natural beauty in Vietnam. Tours from Hanoi start at around $110 USD for two-day trips and increase from there. I love the colorful grottoes, hanging stalactites, and stalagmites of Surprise Cave (Sung Sot), Fairy Cave (Tien Ong), and Heaven Palace (Thien Cung). Make sure you go with a reputable company though as some of the cheaper boats are less than ideal. If you’d rather just visit for one day, day trips from Hanoi cost $55 USD.

5. Wander Kuala Lumpur

Other things to see and do in southeast asia, 1. go jungle trekking.

This region of the world is covered in amazing jungles with diverse wildlife, plentiful camping opportunities, and cool waterfalls. The best jungle treks are found in northern Thailand, Western Laos, and Malaysian Borneo (the latter are also the hardest and most intense). Some of my favorites include Danum Valley (Borneo) for its incredible wildlife; Ratanakiri (Cambodia) for its pristine wilderness and thousand-year-old trees; and Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Vietnam). Costs vary but jungle trekking generally costs $30-50 USD per day.

2. Attend the Full Moon Party

The biggest one-night party in the world welcomes up to 30,000 people with a party that stretches until dawn. Cover yourself in glow paint, grab a bucket of booze, and dance the night away with new friends on the island of Ko Phangan in Thailand. As the name would suggest, the party is on the night of the full moon. If you miss it, there’s always the half-moon party, quarter-moon party, and black-moon party. Really, every night is a party on Ko Phangan . Just avoid the flaming jump rope that occurs — I’ve seen people get burned badly!

3. Learn to dive

There are many great dive sites around the region for those interested in underwater exploration. You can learn to dive here at a fraction of what it would cost back home too. Some of the best places are Ko Tao (Thailand), Sipadan (Malaysia), as well as Gili Islands (Indonesia) and Coron, Palawan (The Philippines). A typical diving course is completed in three days. A PADI course typically runs $275 USD in Thailand, including three nights’ accommodation, though at smaller schools you can often negotiate down to $250 USD. Day trips for certified divers start at $165 USD. For information on Ko Tao, check out this blog post .

4. Eat street food in Singapore

Singapore is a foodie’s heaven. Try the hawker stalls of Singapore as well as Little India and Chinatown for some of the best and cheapest food in Asia. If you’re looking for a nice place to sit down and eat, eat at Singapore’s famed restaurants during lunch when restaurants offer discounts, making them a great deal. You’ll also find the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants here (Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice and Hawker Chan), offering world-class meals for just a couple of bucks!

5. Overload on temples

You can’t turn a corner without seeing a Buddhist temple in this part of the world. You’ll get temple overload at some point but visit as many as you can as each is unique to the country and region of the temple. There are so many places with high concentrations of ornate and beautiful temples. Check out Chiang Mai’s Wat Doi Suthep Temple and hike up the 300 steps to the golden Chedi that’s 600 years old!; Bagan’s Shwesandaw Pagoda from the 11th century with its stunning golden dome; Angkor Wat’s Ta Prohm is covered in iconic vines and enveloped in ancient jungle roots; Hue’s colorful Thien Mu Pagoda is perched atop a lush green embankment; Hoi An’s Quan Cong Temple with incredible Chinese architecture with hand-carved beauty and skill, and Luang Prabang’s Vat Xieng Thong with its golden, canopied roof. Most are free to enter, however, dress codes are enforced (you need to have your shoulders and legs covered).

6. Dive Sipadan

Located off Malaysian Borneo, Sipadan is one of the best dive sites in the world. If you have your dive certificate, make sure you venture out here. I absolutely love this area because it’s teeming with live turtles, diverse cave systems, sharks, dolphins, colorful coral, bright fish, and everything in between. Not a lot of people make it to this part of Malaysia, but it’s worth it to go the extra mile and make your way off the tourist trail a bit. Don’t miss Barracuda Point and The Drop-Off. Keep in mind that only 176 permits to dive at the island are issued each day, costing 140 MYR per person. The resorts on the neighboring islands each get a specific number of permits per day and require divers to stay with them for a few days. So you’ll need to stay at those resorts and dive into the surrounding areas before they can get you a Sipadan permit.

7. Fall in love with Bali

Bali is the most popular destination in Indonesia, and its famous Kuta beach is known for its wild parties and surfing ( though I think it’s overrated ). However, there is much more to Bali than just wild nights and sun-soaked days. If you’re a thrill seeker, hike up to the top of Mount Batur, an active volcano, for a breathtaking sunrise. Paragliding and white water rafting are also super popular here, as is surfing (it’s an affordable place to learn if you’ve never done it). There are also lots of hot springs to enjoy, the Ubud Monkey Forest (a popular temple and nature reserve home to hundreds of monkeys), and numerous places to scuba dive, including the Liberty wreck and Manta Point.

8. Take in Ho Chi Minh City

Frantic, chaotic, and crazy, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is the embodiment of the controlled chaos that rules Southeast Asia. You can’t quite figure out how this teeming mass of people and cars work together, but it does. Highlights here include touring the tunnels used by the Viet Cong in the 1960s, taking in the view from the Saigon Skydeck, eating your way through the street food scene, and seeing the city’s numerous temples.

9. Admire the sunrise over an Indonesian Volcano

One of the most popular tourist attractions on Java is Mount Bromo and its National Park. Don’t miss out on getting a photo of the smoldering Bromo volcano as it lies surrounded by the almost lunar landscape of the Sea of Sand. Get up early to catch one of the most memorable sunrises of your life. If you’re there in mid-August, you’ll be just in time to see Upacara Kasada, the traditional Hindu ritual of the Tenggerese, a Javanese tribe of the region.

10. Hike in Khao Sok National Park

Located in southern Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is constantly rated as one of the best parks in Thailand, with incredible trekking, camping, limestone karsts, cooling rivers, and a glistening lake. Visit for semi-challenging hikes, tons of wildlife, walking paths, and breathtaking sunsets. Park entrance costs around $6 USD while full-day guided tours are $95 USD. I highly recommend spending at least one night here to get the full experience.

11. Visit Kampot

Most people come to Kampot to enjoy the scenic riverside views, as well as the rolling hills that surround the city. Since you can explore easily enough on foot or by bicycle, Kampot is a great place to slow down and relax. There’s not much to do here but have lazy days by the river, chill, and eat (don’t miss the famous Rusty Keyhole for BBQ!). Don’t miss the pepper farms, as this region of Cambodia is filled with pepper farms where you can learn about the history of the spice, see how it is grown, and pick up what is considered some of the finest pepper in the world. Tours are usually free.

12. Take a cooking class

Food from this region is as varied as the countries themselves and learning how to cook a few dishes is a great souvenir of your time here. Even if you don’t plan to cook back home, you can still spend a day making and eating scrumptious food. Most big cities have cooking schools offering classes of 2-6 hours, often including a trip to the local market beforehand to select ingredients. I absolutely love cooking classes and urge you to take one at least once. They are a fun experience!

13. Take a food tour

If you’d rather eat instead of cook, taking a food tour is a fun way to gain insight into the region’s amazing noodle dishes, fresh seafood, sweets, and street food while learning about the history and culture behind the cuisine. Most major cities in Southeast Asia offer food tours. These include tours around local markets, street stalls, and tours to locally-owned restaurants and cafes where you can sample the local cuisine and connect with a local chef. If you’re nervous about street food, this is a great way to try some in a controlled setting. Tours usually last 2-4 hours and include multiple stops and several different dishes, with prices costing $40-75 USD per person.

14. Visit an elephant sanctuary

While riding an elephant is on many a Southeast Asia bucket list, once you know how much the animals suffer from abuse in order to provide these rides, you might think twice about taking one. An even better way to interact with elephants is to volunteer at or visit the Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai in Thailand. It’s a phenomenal place, allowing you to give back to the community and these magnificent animals all at once. After coming here, you will understand why you should NEVER ride an elephant. A one-day visit costs $70 USD.

15. See The Killing Fields

A visit to Choeung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, may not be the most cheerful way to spend an afternoon, but it makes for an educational and memorable experience. Over 3 million people were killed by Pol Pot’s regime, including countless women and children. I recommend getting a guide so you can really understand what you’re seeing as you explore the area. Also, this horrific tragedy took place less than 50 years ago and is still very present so please be respectful as a visitor.  The site is located 10 miles from Phnom Penh. Half-day guided tours start at $66 USD.

16. Swim with Whale Sharks in Donsol

If you’re in the Philippines, check out the Donsol Whale Shark Interactive Ecosystem Project because there are not many experiences quite as adrenaline-inducing as swimming with a whale shark for the first time in crystal waters. These incredible creatures are around 45 feet (14 meters) long and yet incredibly gentle and curious. I loved floating at the surface being able to look below and see them slowly swim below me. Get some people together and rent a boat for a half day, explore the area, and go ‘shark-seeing’ for a good cause.

Southeast Asia Travel Costs

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Accommodation – Accommodation in Southeast Asia is really cheap, making it the perfect place to travel if you are on a budget. Hostels are plentiful, as are budget guesthouses and hotels. It’s also very cheap to splash out here if you’re in need of some luxury.

Generally, you can find hostel dorm rooms for as little as $6-8 USD in Cambodia and $3-6 USD in Laos. In Thailand, 4-6-bed dorm rooms are $8-12 USD, while in Vietnam you can expect to pay $5-7 USD. In Indonesia, prices range between $5-10 USD for a 4-6-bed dorm room. Expect to pay at least $15-20 per night for a private room with air conditioning. Free Wi-Fi is standard in most hostels, free breakfast is common, and many hostels even have pools. In more remote areas, hot water isn’t common so make sure to check in advance if that’s an issue for you.

Simple guesthouses or bungalows throughout Southeast Asia generally cost $12-20 USD per night for a basic room with a fan (sometimes air conditioning) and hot water. If you want something nicer that includes a more comfortable bed and a TV, expect to pay $25-35 USD per night.

For backpackers, budgeting around $10 USD per night for accommodation is pretty safe no matter where you go in Southeast Asia. If you’re looking for a higher-end hotel room with more amenities, expect to pay $20-50 USD per night for a room. Anything over that is luxury territory.

Camping is available in certain areas, usually for just a few dollars per night for a basic tent plot without electricity. However, this is about the same price as hostels so it’s not really any cheaper.

Food – While each country’s cuisine varies, overall, Southeast Asian food is aromatic, spicy, and flavorful. Typical spices and herbs include garlic, basil, galangal, cilantro, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, chilies, and fish sauce. No matter what region you’re in, you can expect to find a variety of curries, salads, soups, noodle dishes, and stir-fries.

Rice and noodles are central to Southeast Asian food, while the meat is usually pork, chicken, fish, or seafood, which is everywhere on the islands and coastal areas.

While traveling Southeast Asia, street food is the most popular food and cheapest option. On average, these meals cost $1-5 USD. You find these stalls throughout this region lining most streets and every market. They are ubiquitous in the region. In Singapore, street food (from “hawker stands” as they’re known there) costs around $4-5 USD for a meal. Even if you go into small local restaurants, the price doesn’t increase that much.

Food that costs $2 USD at a street stall generally only costs $4-6 USD at a local restaurant. If you went into a restaurant in Thailand, you’d pay around $3-4 USD for a pad Thai that would have cost $1-2 USD on the street.

In Cambodia, street food is around $1-2 USD, while restaurants charge around $3-5 USD for a dish like amok (a coconut milk dish) or luc lac (pepper gravy beef).

Western meals, including burgers, pizza, and sandwiches usually cost around $7-10 USD. But these generally aren’t that great. If you want something that actually tastes as it does back home, expect to spend at least $10-12 USD for your meal.

While cheap, alcohol can take a bite out of your budget if you’re not careful. Those $1-2 USD beers add up! Wine and cocktails are more expensive, generally around $3-5 USD. A cappuccino is typically around $2 USD. Bottled water is plentiful and costs less than $1 USD.

There’s a growing cutting-edge foodie scene in the region and, if you want to splurge, you can do so on some really good meals. Big cities like Bangkok, KL, and Singapore, all have world-class Michelin star restaurants as well some incredible fusion restaurants.

Since dining out is so cheap in the region, there’s no point in grocery shopping unless you’re looking to get some pre-made salads or fruits. Additionally, a general lack of kitchens in most hostels and hotels makes it difficult to cook even if you wanted to. If you do purchase your own groceries, expect to spend around $25 USD per week for basic groceries like local produce, rice, and some meat (while avoiding expensive imported items like cheese and wine).

Backpacking Southeast Asia Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of $45 USD per day, you can stay in hostel dorms, eat out at local markets and street stalls, limit your drinking, do mostly free activities, minimize paid activities, and use public transportation to get around. You’re not going to be able to splash out but you’ll be able to live the typical backpacker experience without really stressing over expenses.

On a mid-range budget of $85 USD per day, you can stay in budget hotels or private hostel rooms, eat more restaurant meals, do more paid activities like cooking classes, take some taxis, and enjoy a few more drinks. You won’t live large, but you won’t be missing out either.

On an upscale budget of $150 USD or more per day, you can stay in nicer hotels with more amenities, eat out as much as you want, do more paid tours including private tours, hire a driver, fly between destinations, and basically do whatever you want. The sky is the limit with this kind of budget!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Southeast Asia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Backpacking Southeast Asia is cheap. There’s little opportunity to spend a lot of money since everything is already so inexpensive unless you intentionally are trying to splash out on fancy meals and high end hotels. The two reasons why most travelers end up overspending is that they eat a lot of Western food and drink way too much. If you want to save money while traveling in this part of the world, cut down on your drinking and skip the Western food. While country guides have more specific ways to save money, here are some general ways to save money in Southeast Asia:

  • Stay with a local – Accommodation is cheap in Southeast Asia but nothing’s cheaper than free! Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals who have extra beds and couches for free. You’ll also meet great people who can show you around and share their insider tips and advice.
  • Book tours and day trips as a group – You have more negotiation power when you’re with a group of people buying multiple spots or tickets. Traveling alone? Meet a friend at a hostel and see if they want to join the same tour as you. I’ve met some great friends over the years doing this and highly recommend it.
  • Don’t book in advance – Don’t book any tours or activities before you get to your destination. They’ll be much cheaper when you arrive as you’ll be able to negotiate a lower price as you’ll find companies are often offering the same tour and competing. Anything you see online is more expensive than you need to pay!
  • Eat on the street – The street food is the best food. The food is the best and cheapest you’ll find. It’s a great way to try new foods and get to chat with locals as well. This is where locals eat so if you want insight into local culture, good food, and savings, eat the street food. Look for where locals are eating to ensure that it’s safe to eat.
  • Bargain hard – Nothing is ever at face value here. Bargain with sellers as most of the time, the price they’ve quoted is way higher. There’s a haggling culture in the region so play the game and save some money. It’s important not to convert it in your head to your own currency because it will usually sound cheap even though you might still be getting ripped off. You’ll never get the local price, but you might come close!
  • Minimize your drinking – Drinks really add up. Even with cheap drinks, if you’re not aware, you’ll end up spending more money on beer than on food and accommodation. If you want to drink, head to the supermarkets, drink at the hostel, or check out the local happy hours.
  • Pack a water bottle – A water bottle with a purifier comes particularly in handy in Southeast Asia since you can’t usually drink the tap water. Save money and thousands of plastic bottles and get a bottle that can purify the tap water for you. My preferred bottle is LifeStraw as it has a built-in filter that ensures your water is always safe and clean.

Where to Stay in Southeast Asia

How to Get Around Southeast Asia

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Public transportation – Public transportation costs from a few pennies to a few dollars, with Singapore and Malaysia offering the most comprehensive public transportation systems. In Thailand, local buses cost around $0.25 USD per trip, while the Metro and Skytrain in Bangkok cost $0.50-1.50 USD per trip. In Cambodia, a bus ticket in Phnom Penh costs just $0.40 USD per ride.

Major cities generally have subway systems but mostly you’ll be using the bus or shared taxis to get around.

Tuk-tuks (small, shared taxis with no meter) are available around much of the region and require a bit of haggling. They usually have 3-6 seats and generally cost more than public transportation but are faster. To find a reputable driver, ask your accommodation as they usually know someone. Tuk-tuk drivers can often be hired for the day for a discounted rate (this is what a lot of people do to visit the Killing Fields and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, for example).

Taxi – Taxis in the region are generally safe, though it’s not uncommon to have to haggle. Scams to rip you off aren’t uncommon either, so always ask your accommodation to call you a taxi whenever possible so you know you’ll get a reputable company.

In Singapore and Indonesia, taxi drivers do put on the meter. In Bangkok, you can get taxi drivers to use the meter, but if you’re hailing one in a tourist area, he might try to avoid using it. In Vietnam, the meter is sometimes rigged, but if you can get a reputable company like Mai Linh, you won’t have any problems.

Ridesharing – Grab, DiDi, and Gojek are Asia’s answer to Uber. They work the same way: you hire a driver to take you somewhere via the app, and you can pay via the app or in cash. It’s often more affordable than a regular taxi, though drivers are a bit unreliable as the practice is not as widespread here as in other parts of the world.

Just keep in mind that some drivers are driving motorcycles so be sure to double check what kind of vehicle is picking you up if you don’t want to ride on the back of one.

Bus – The easiest and cheapest way to travel around Southeast Asia is by bus. The backpacker trail is so worn that there is a very well-established tourist bus system to take you anywhere. Buses costs vary between $5-25 USD for a 5-6 hour journey. Overnight buses cost $20-35 USD depending on distance (they often have reclining seats so you can get a decent sleep).

You can check ticket prices and book tickets for all the different bus companies across Southeast Asia at 12go.asia.

Train – Train service is limited in the region and not something to really consider when you travel Southeast Asia. You can take a train up and down the coast of Vietnam and there’s some limited scenic rails in Malaysia. Thailand is the only country that has an extensive train system that lets you travel all its regions (and onward to Singapore) from Bangkok.

The train prices in Southeast Asia are determined by distance and class. Night trains with sleeper cars are more expensive than day trains. The night train to Chiang Mai from Bangkok takes twelve hours and costs $27 USD for a sleeper seat. However, that same train during the day is $8-9 USD. In Vietnam, trains run up and down the coast and cost $60 USD from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.

Flying – The cost of flying around Southeast Asia has come down in recent years due to the rise of low-cost airlines. Scoot, Jetstar, and AirAsia are the biggest. Nok Air has a lot of flights within Thailand , and VietJet Air is popular in Vietnam . Lion Air serves Indonesia , but its safety record is really spotty and I personally would not fly them. If you book early, you can save on fares, as most of the airlines offer deeply discounted fare sales all the time, especially Air Asia.

Just make sure that the airport these budget airlines fly into isn’t too far out of your way (transportation from the secondary airport sometimes negates the savings from using the budget airline itself).

Also, keep in mind that you usually must pay to check your baggage on these cheap flights. If you wait to pay for your luggage at the gate, you end up paying almost double. Travel carry-on only to avoid this added cost.

All in all, I only recommend flying if you are pressed for time or find a super cheap deal. Otherwise, stick to the bus.

Hitchhiking – Hitchhiking in Southeast Asia is safe, though popularity of the practice varies by country (it’s more common in Malaysia, but not so much in Cambodia). Dress respectably, smile while making eye contact with drivers, and use a cardboard sign to tell people where you’re headed. Be prepared for long bouts of no pick-ups, especially if you’re traveling through more rural areas. Pack plenty of water and food. Also, make sure the people picking you up understand you’re hitchhiking and not flagging down a taxi.

Hitchwiki is a great resource for hitchhiking tips.

Car rental I don’t recommend renting a car in Southeast Asia. Rental cars are expensive ($40 USD per day or more) and the roads here are in poor shape. I would never drive around the region.

When to Go to Southeast Asia

The best time of year to visit Southeast Asia is from November to April when temperatures are milder (though temperatures vary drastically by region). It may be mild in Thailand in January and hot in Malaysia but in Northern Vietnam, it’s cold! Also, one of the biggest mistakes people make is not taking into account the rainy season. In some cases it won’t make a big difference but definitely does if it’s a beach trip.

In Indonesia, the best time to visit is April to October. Temperatures average 24-30ºC (75-86ºF), and the weather is mostly dry. July to September is the peak holiday season and when you can expect to pay the highest rates. December to February is the rainy season.

In Malaysia, January-March and June-September are the best time to visit, as these months have the lowest average rainfall. It is still hot and humid during this time though. The rainy season is from October to December. Singapore’s climate/weather is much like Malaysia’s.

In Vietnam, the weather varies by region. In Central Vietnam (including Hoi An and Nha Trang), January-May is the best time to visit because it is dry and the temperatures average 21-30°C (70-86°F). June to August is also a decent time to visit. If you want to stick around Hanoi, March to April is great, or October to December (for mildest temperatures). The rainy season is May-September.

Thailand has three seasons: hot, hotter, and hottest. It’s always warm, though the weather is nicest between November and February (which is also peak tourist season). Bangkok is “coolest” and driest during this time (but still averaging a hot 29°C/85°F each day). April and May are the hottest months, and the rainy season is June-October. The gulf islands get pretty rainy from August to December.

The dry season in Cambodia is from November-May and the cool season is from November-February (and when most people visit). Temperatures during this time are still high, but humidity is lower. Laos has the same cool season as Cambodia, with the dry season running from November-April.

In the Philippines, it’s mostly warm all year long with an average daily high of 26°C (80°F). There are rainy and dry seasons and temperatures are hot and dry from March-May and cooler December-February. The best time to visit is between January-April when it’s less humid. Monsoon Season is July-October.

How to Stay Safe in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo and even as a solo female traveler. Violent crime is super, duper rare. Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime in Southeast Asia, especially around popular tourist landmarks. Always keep your valuables out of reach on public transportation and in crowds just to be safe. Never leave your valuables unattended while at the beach and always keep a hold of your purse/bag when out and about as bag snatching is common.

That said, outside touristy areas, theft is really rare. Heck, it’s pretty rare in touristy areas too! But a little vigilance goes a long way and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

There are some common scams around that you’ll want to be aware of, such as the motorbike scam. This involves a bike rental company trying to charge you for damage to the bike that you didn’t cause. To avoid this, always take photos of your rental before you leave so you can protect yourself from baseless claims.

Another common scam involves a tuk-tuk driver taking you somewhere you didn’t want to go in hopes you’ll buy something from the shop/restaurant he dropped you off at (he gets a commission if you do). Simply refuse to buy anything and demand to go back to where you were — or find another driver.

For other common travel scams, read this post about major travel scams to avoid in the region .

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though it’s generally a good idea to avoid walking around alone at night just to be safe. It’s always a good idea to carry some extra cash to get home in a taxi if you need to. Additionally, always keep an eye on your drink at the bar and never accept drinks from strangers. Be sensible when it comes to dating while traveling and meeting people in public places. As I’m not a woman, please check out some solo female travel blogs to get the best insight.

Overall, the people who get in trouble here tend to be involved with drugs or sex tourism. Avoid those two things and you should be fine. Keep in mind that it’s not always obvious how old someone is or if they’re a sex worker so be mindful when getting involved in romantic interactions. Also, penalties for drug use in this region are stiff so even if you’re here to party, skip the drugs.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. Thai Airways Boeing 777-300ER Royal Silk Business Class Review [BKK to FRA]

Airline : Thai Airways (TG) Aircraft : Boeing 777-300ER Flight # : TG920 Route : Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Date : April 16, 2024 Duration : 11 hours, 30 minutes Cabin and Layout : Royal Silk business class, 42 seats, 1-2-1 configuration (2 cabins) Seat : 11B (bulkhead) Cost : 80,000 Aeroplan points or from $1,933 cash for the BKK-FRA leg (the entire trip from BKK to FRA to JFK to YYZ cost 87,500 Aeroplan points)

After an incredible 2 months in Asia — during which I experienced some amazing new places, including Seoul, Taipei, and Manila — the time had come for me to finally head home.

Since I was in Bangkok, the base of Thai Airways, for my last stop of the trip, I thought this was an excellent opportunity to fly its long-haul international Royal Silk business class. However, Thai Airways doesn’t fly its own planes to anywhere in North America, so I knew I’d have to find an itinerary that involved a partner airline. For this, I wanted to fly another new airline for me or one I had previously enjoyed.

Fortunately, the latter scenario worked out. I found last-minute award space relatively easily as I could fly either back home to Chicago (ORD) or to Toronto (YYZ) to visit my fiancée.

Here’s an in-depth look at how I booked this award ticket and the entire experience from the lounge in Bangkok to the Thai Airways Royal Silk flight itself.

Thai Airways is a member of  Star Alliance , the largest airline alliance in the world, which includes  United Airlines ,  Lufthansa , Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines , and  All Nippon Airways (ANA) .

While not as highly regarded as some of its Asian counterparts, the airline does have a reputation for offering excellent onboard cuisine and service . This is particularly true when flying Thai Airways Royal Silk business class.

Fortunately, you can utilize several different programs to book Thai Airways award tickets , including Air Canada Aeroplan , Avianca LifeMiles , Turkish Miles&Smiles , and United Airlines MileagePlus .

I chose to book this award redemption using Aeroplan points because I had a huge stash of them to put to use. I began looking for award space from Bangkok (BKK) to both Chicago (ORD) and Toronto (YYZ), knowing that I’d need to book an itinerary with potentially multiple stops due to Thai Airways not flying to North America.

After a few minutes, I found some business class award space from Bangkok to Toronto using Aeroplan’s intuitive search engine. Best of all, this routing included a flight on my favorite airline in the world: Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines operates a fifth-freedom flight (when an airline from 1 country flies between 2 other countries) between Frankfurt (FRA) and New York (JFK).

Aeroplan redemption flights BKK FRA JFK YYZ

Check out my previous review of Singapore Airlines business class onboard a 777-300ER from JFK to FRA .

Aeroplan is an excellent program for Star Alliance partner awards thanks to its fantastic rates for partner-operated flights. Although Air Canada uses dynamic pricing for its own flights, the program has a published  distance-based award chart for partner awards . In fact, its partner award chart has some incredible redemption opportunities.

According to its award chart, Air Canada Aeroplan divides the world into 4 distinct zones: North America, South America, the Atlantic, and the Pacific.

Aeroplan region map for awards

With Aeroplan, award pricing depends on the zones you fly between and the overall distance flown.

To calculate how many points I needed for this award redemption, I looked at the award chart for flights between the North America (U.S. or Canada) and Pacific zones (Thailand):

After calculating the total distance for the planned itinerary and looking at the award chart, I confirmed the pricing. The award redemption was priced at 87,500 Aeroplan points and CA$152 (~$112) in taxes and fees.

Thai Airways routing BKK FRA JFK YYZ

Out of curiosity, I wanted to compare what the award price would be if I only wanted to fly between Bangkok (BKK) and Frankfurt (FRA).

For this award, I needed to use the award chart for flights between the Atlantic (Europe) and Pacific zones (Thailand), which are generally priced a bit higher. Using  Great Circle Mapper , I calculated the distance between Bangkok (BKK) and Frankfurt (FRA) as 5,598 miles.

According to this award chart, partner-operated flights in the 5,001- to 7,000-mile distance band can be booked for 80,000 Aeroplan points.

Thai Airways redemption BKK FRA Aeroplan

Clearly, pricing between the Pacific and Atlantic zones is much higher, considering I could book an itinerary all the way from Bangkok to Toronto (including an 8-hour leg between Frankfurt and New York) for just 7,500 more points than a flight from Bangkok to Frankfurt. I definitely felt like I was taking full advantage of the Aeroplan award chart .

Check out our guide on some of the best ways to redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points for maximum value.

Earning Aeroplan points would have been very easy even if I hadn’t already had them in my account.  Air Canada Aeroplan partners with several transferable-point programs , including  American Express Membership Rewards ,  Bilt Rewards ,  Chase Ultimate Rewards ,  Capital One Miles , and  Marriott Bonvoy .

All the programs above, except for Marriott Bonvoy, transfer to Air Canada Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio . Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to Aeroplan ; for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer, you get a 5,000-point bonus.

After filling in some travel information, I reached the final payment screen. Air Canada Aeroplan offers several points and cash combinations for award payments.

I double-checked all my personal information and the travel dates and booked the award ticket.

Thai Airways Aeroplan redemption cost options

If I paid cash, the   one-way business class fare would have set me back $1,933 .

However, since I used 87,500 Aeroplan points (and CA$151.80/~$112 in taxes and fees) for this one-way award, I got a respectable 2.09 cents per point. This is significantly more than  our valuation of Air Canada Aeroplan points  at 1.5 cents, making it a solid redemption .

Cash price Thai Airways business class BKK FRA Google Flights

I used my  Chase Sapphire Reserve ®  to pay the taxes and fees for this award ticket. This card is my go-to card for travel purchases, as it offers  extensive travel insurance and protections .

Aeroplan has a fantastic  stopover policy . Stopovers can be booked for just 5,000 Aeroplan points, including with one-way award redemptions.

After several wonderful days in Bangkok, it was time to head to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), where I was flying from. I used Bangkok’s fantastic public transportation since I had plenty of time to get to the airport for my late-night flight.

I was staying at the Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 (review to come!), which made getting to the airport a breeze. I took the BTS SkyTrain from Nana station to Phaya Thai station . I transferred to the Airport Rail Link, which would take me to Suvarnabhumi Airport. It cost around $2.50 and took about 55 minutes.

I arrived at the airport shortly before 5 p.m., several hours before the flight departed. As I got off the Airport Rail Link train at the basement level, I took the elevators to the departures level, on the fourth floor. A large Buddha statue was in the center of the airport terminal, near the elevators.

Thai Airways check-in counters were in Row H . With Bangkok being Thai Airways’ hub airport, several check-in counters were available, separated based on the region you were flying to. There was a separate check-in section for Thai Airways domestic flights.

As expected, Suvarnabhumi Airport was packed. I quickly looked for a Thai Airways representative and inquired about any dedicated check-in encounters for those flying business class. A kind representative let me know that Thai Airways Royal Silk passengers can access dedicated counters in Row A , located at the end of the departure hall.

I followed the signs for the Royal Silk and Royal First check-in counters at the far left end of the departures hall. It was a brief 4-minute walk to Row A.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Check in sign

There were several check-in counters available, however, not a single other passenger was there at the time. I approached one of the check-in desks and was greeted by a Thai Airways representative.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Check in desks

I handed my passport to the check-in agent, and he looked up my flight information. The agent promptly gave me my boarding passes (including my connecting Singapore Airlines-operated flight) and told me I could use the Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge .

Thai Airways Royal Silk boarding pass

In all honesty, the check-in agent wasn’t the friendliest. However, he was incredibly efficient. All things considered, I think I actually prefer that. Overall, check-in was smooth and completed in under 3 minutes.

After gathering my bags, I headed towards the security checkpoints. Fortunately, there was a dedicated fast-track security checkpoint directly in front of the check-in desk. All business and first class passengers have access to the fast-track area.

Fast Track Bangkok Airport

The security screening was also efficient and completed in just a few minutes. After clearing security, I collected my bags and headed toward passport control. Several signs showed that it was a restricted area and that no photography was allowed.

Everything at Suvarnabhumi Airport went very smoothly. I collected my boarding passes, cleared security, and passed passport control in under 10 minutes.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge

After clearing passport control, I headed directly to the Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge. Fortunately, one of the lounge entrances was right behind passport control. I went down the escalators to the lounge.

Exiting the escalator, I proceeded to the check-in desk, where the agent quickly scanned my boarding pass.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge check in desk

The lounge was a massive, open-concept area with seating for what I estimate to be at least 300 people. It ran the length of an entire airport section, spanning several international departure gates.

I found several seating areas divided into smaller sections. All were nearly identical, with armchairs featuring decorative pillows and small tables dividing them.

The leather armchairs were surprisingly comfortable, and the tables were large enough for a couple of plates of food.

Although there were a lot of people in the lounge, everybody was spread out, so it didn’t feel too crowded.

Near one of the corner seating areas was a staffed bar with a seemingly good selection of beverages. I skipped this, however.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge bar

After walking around the space, I headed to the lounge’s main hot food buffet to see what it offered. Since this lounge was so large, several smaller food stations were spread throughout.

The hot buffet featured a good selection of food, including chicken, fish, pork, curries, and rice.

Across from the hot food section was a dedicated noodle soup station featuring braised pork, shrimp wonton, and tom yum soups . Several toppings were available, including spring onions, coriander, spices, chili, peppers, soy sauce, and dry cabbage leaves.

Desserts and bakery items were available at 2 dedicated stations.

Offerings included scones, almond croissants, blueberry pastries, and chocolate fudge cake slices.

The bakery case boasted slices of lemon, red velvet, and mango cake. There was also an assortment of sandwiches next to the cake slices.

Sandwiches included ham, tuna, cheese, and crab stick.

After I surveyed all my options, I started with the hot buffet and got some stir-fried chicken with basil, deep-fried seabass with sweet-and-sour sauce, and a generous portion of steamed white rice. I also got a bowl of tom yum soup.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge plate

The steamed rice and sweet-and-sour seabass were so good that I had to have a second plate. I also enjoyed some delicious traditional Thai tea to pair with it.

I also decided to try several items from the bakery selection. The pastries were fantastic, especially when paired with a traditional Thai tea.

After eating a lot more than I was expecting to, I was ready to take a shower. Fortunately, the lounge had several individual shower rooms available .

The lounge bathroom staff brought me towels and complimentary toiletries. Although the shower suite was relatively basic, it did the job. I felt wonderfully refreshed after my shower.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge shower room

The Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge was a fantastic way to spend a few hours at the airport. The seats were comfortable, and there was high-speed Wi-Fi available.

The food was also plentiful and varied. I particularly enjoyed the seabass and the traditional Thai tea, both of which tasted great. I was also glad I could take a shower before my overnight flight.

Boarding at BKK

After a few hours in the lounge, it was time to head to the gate. I checked a nearby international departures board to confirm my departure gate. The Thai Airways flight to Frankfurt was set to depart from gate C3, about a 10-minute walk from the lounge.

Bangkok Airport departures board

After a short walk, I reached Gate C3 about 15 minutes before the official boarding time.

Thai Airways Royal Silk Gate C3 Bangkok Frankfurt

I was hoping to snap a picture of the Thai Airways 777-300ER taking us to Frankfurt. Unfortunately, I couldn’t because of the dirty windows and window glare from the massive overhead lights.

There was a dedicated priority boarding line for Royal Silk passengers, Thai Royal Orchard Plus Platinum members, and Star Alliance Gold members. I got in line as several passengers were already waiting.

Boarding began about 25 minutes behind schedule, around 11:30 p.m., and started with passengers requiring extra assistance. Priority passengers, including those flying in Thai Royal Silk, were then called to board.

The boarding process was chaotic , as groups lined up near the gate entrance. The gate agents made multiple announcements requesting passengers to step away from the gate entrance, but it didn’t do much.

First class and business class passengers could enter through the door on the left.

Thai Airways Royal Silk separate doors for flight

As I boarded the Boeing 777-300ER through the left door, I was greeted by a friendly flight attendant who welcomed me and showed me to my seat, 11B, the first window seat in the front cabin.

I immediately noticed the prominent use of the color purple throughout the cabin, which is a central component of the airline’s brand identity.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er seat 11B

Thai Airways’ 777-300ERs offer a total of 42 Royal Silk business class seats : 24 in the main cabin up front and 18 in a smaller cabin behind the center galley.

The business class cabin is arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration, ensuring all business class passengers have direct aisle access .

Thai Airways 777 300ER seat map

The window seats alternate between being closer to the window (seats “A” and “K”) and closer to the aisle (seats “B” and “J”), which is common with staggered seating configurations.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er cabin

The middle seats are also staggered, with some rows closer to the aisle and others closer to each other (seats “E” and “F”), separated by only a few inches. These are commonly known as “honeymoon seats,” and solo travelers would likely want to avoid these seats .

If you’re traveling by yourself (like I was), your best bet would be to select a “non-honeymoon” center seat or a window seat closer to the window (seats “A” or “K”) as these seats are much further from the aisle and have a small table that helps create separation.

Business Class Seat

As I sat down, I began checking out all of the details of my seat. Mine was “exposed” to the aisle, which became immediately apparent.

There were no dividers on or around the armrest, and there was no privacy to speak of. I thought this would be a concern when sleeping — and it was. More on that later.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er seat close to aisle

Trying to distract myself from the lack of privacy, I looked at what else the seat offered. Directly in front of me was the inflight entertainment system. The TV screen was relatively small and far from the seat, though it was operable by touch input.

I noticed 2 USB-A charging ports below the IFE screen. However, these were useless to me as I no longer carry USB-A charging cables in favor of faster charging USB-C. Many airlines haven’t had the chance to catch up to the USB-C standard that technology has moved to.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er IFE screen

Directly below the screen was the footwell, which was fairly deep and wide, providing ample space to put my feet up. Below the footwell, there was also some additional storage for small items.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er seat footwell

To the left of the IFE was the tray table, which was located against the seat shell and held in place with a latch. Coats could be hung up on the hook to the left of the tray table.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er tray table storage

The tray table had a wood-look top, and I found it easy to fold and swivel it in and out of place.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er tray table

The wooden seat console was located directly to the left of the seat. It featured some surface space, a drink holder, and a reading light.

I noticed a real lack of proper storage space , so I used the space I did have somewhat unconventionally. For example, I stored my AirPods case in the drink holder for most of the flight.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er storage option

The seat controls reflected the seat’s age, but they were conveniently located, easy to use, and clearly indicated which buttons would do what.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er seat controls

The inflight entertainment remote was located directly beneath the seat controls.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er seat controls and IFE remote

The controller was predictably outdated, but easy to use, with several clickable buttons. It was unresponsive at times and froze up on me several times during the flight.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er IFE remote

The padded armrest directly next to the IFE remote controller opened to reveal a small storage nook. There was enough space for a single water bottle and my MacBook charging brick and cable.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er storage

The seat also featured a single AC power outlet on the panel next to the seat. Although the location wasn’t ideal, my charger never once came loose.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er power outlet

In bed mode, the seat was made even more comfortable thanks to the airline-provided pillow, comforter, and duvet. Unfortunately, no mattress pad was provided.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er bed

I found the bed to be generally comfortable, though I did feel cramped at times.

Due to my seat being exposed to the aisle, flight attendants would brush my seat as they passed through. This may not sound like a big deal, but it was frustrating as it was enough to wake me up from time to time.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er laying in bed

Overall, the Thai Airways 777 Royal Silk business class seat and cabin were not up to my standards. I was not impressed with the seat as it lacked a lot of what makes a business class seat good .

The most glaring infraction was the lack of privacy from the aisle . I can’t reiterate enough how important it is for solo travelers to opt for seats located closer to the window, as they provide significantly more privacy.

There was also the lack of storage — in addition to finding weird places for my smaller belongings, I had to store my personal item in the overhead bin as no stowage was allowed above or below the footrest during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

Simply put, the Thai Airways 777 Royal Silk business class seat is outdated, and it’s time for the airline to begin a retrofit program for these aircraft.

Food and Beverage

Thai Airways is considered to be one of the best airlines in the world when it comes to the inflight meal service. Let’s look at what the food and beverage offering was like on my flight.

Pre-Select Meals

Thai Airways now offers pre-select meal service for passengers traveling in first class, business class, and economy class (Royal Orchid Plus Platinum and Gold Members only). Pre-selecting inflight meals is limited to international flights departing from Bangkok.

Thai Airways Royal Silk meal selection online

The service provides a fantastic selection of dishes and ensures that you get to enjoy the food you desire during the flight.

To utilize this service, head to Thai Airways’ website . From here, you can select Manage Booking with your booking reference code. Meal selections must be made at least  72 hours before departing from Bangkok.

Inflight Dining Experience

Shortly after I settled into my seat, a flight attendant offered me a predeparture beverage. Options included Champagne, apple juice, and orange juice. I opted for the orange juice.

The meal service began after reaching cruising altitude, about 15 minutes after takeoff. Menus were placed in the seat pockets, and I looked through them to see what I would choose for this flight. The dinner service included an appetizer, a starter, a main course, and a dessert.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er food menu

A separate beverage menu was also provided. The menu included several non-alcoholic options, including coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sparkling water, fruit juices, and soft drinks. It also had an extensive selection of Champagne and wine.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er wines

A flight attendant came by and asked about drink preferences. I opted for a Thai iced tea with grass jelly and a gin and tonic .

A few minutes later, a flight attendant brought me my drinks of choice, which were served with the amuse-bouche: prawn and vegan caviar with tom yum sauce on a skewer and savory cream cheese tart with vegan caviar.  The prawn was fantastic, mostly thanks to the delicious sauce.

This was paired with an assortment of fruit and nuts, including cashews, almonds, and raisins.

About 15 minutes later, a crew member served the starter course. The starter consisted of salmon and crab meat tartare with Seiko and a balsamic glaze . Although it sounded fantastic when I saw it on the menu, the tartare did not taste good.

The flight attendants also brought a selection of bread. I opted for the garlic bread, which was soft to the touch and delicious.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er salmon and crab tartare

Shortly after, a flight attendant brought the main course. For the main course, I opted for the lamb chops in red curry with green banana .

The lamb was served with Thai jasmine rice, 5-spice braised Ratchaburi black tofu and soft-boiled egg, sautéed French beans, and grilled sweet corn. I paired the lamb curry with another Thai iced tea. The lamb tasted delicious, however, the red curry was a bit strong and overpowered the taste of the lamb chops.

Shortly after I finished the main course, the flight attendant brought a small plate, which they called “the bites” on the menu. This consisted of an assortment of cheeses and fruits with crackers served with mango chutney.

This plate was not all that great, probably because I’m just not a fan of random cheeses. The mango chutney was also spicier than I expected it to be.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er assorted cheeses

Although I was quite full from the meal service so far, I knew I could make room for dessert. My choices were mango sticky rice with crème brulée or chocolate hazelnut ganache with vanilla sauce .

Since I wasn’t sure which to try, I requested to try both. The flight attendant told me there was plenty of dessert on board and that it would be no problem.

The desserts were not bad — I preferred the chocolate hazelnut ganache to the mango sticky rice, which would have tasted better if the mango had been colder.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er dessert

About an hour and a half before landing, the flight attendants began the breakfast service. I opted for Thai jasmine rice in tom yum-style soup with seafood with salmon roll and onsen egg .

The meal was accompanied by a small fruit bowl, a couple of pastries, yogurt, and small jars of Australian honey and strawberry jam.

The tom yum soup was delicious and the highlight of the meal service . Thanks to the great balance of flavors, it had a tangy taste.

Although Thai Airways is known for its excellent onboard cuisine, I found it average at best. I think I had some high expectations as I had recently flown Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Turkish Airlines in the weeks leading up to this flight, all of which were better, food-wise.

Thai Airways offered basic amenities for business class passengers. However, it was also severely lacking in some places. For example, there were no pajamas, which was a miss, especially considering this was a flight that departed after midnight.

Inflight Entertainment

Although I barely used the IFE during our late-night flight, I still checked our flight path from time to time. As I poked through the entertainment options, I found a decent collection of Thai, Hollywood, and Bollywood movies. The selection of TV shows was lacking, with only a few episodes plucked from a few Western series.

I found Thai Airways’ inflight entertainment to be mediocre at best. The IFE screen was quite small and slow and unresponsive at times, especially when using the remote. The touchscreen monitor was much more responsive.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er IFE and MacBook

However, the outdated IFE screen also crashed on me several times during the flight. The map sometimes would not load and would present a message on a blank screen: “Requested document was not found.”

Noise-Canceling Headphones

Each business class passenger received a pair of  noise-canceling headphones . However, I did not find them too comfortable and did not use them after trying them out.

Amenity Kit

The amenity kit came from Jim Thompson. It was a relatively simple pouch, but it felt high-quality.

Thai Airways Royal Silk business class 777 300er amenity kit

Inside were a toothbrush set, a sleeping mask, a shoehorn, comfort socks, and earplugs. It also included several products, such as moisturizing lotion, lip balm, and an aromatherapy roller.

Having slippers was a nice touch, though they were pretty bare-bones.

Onboard Wi-Fi

Thai Airways does not offer Wi-Fi on its older Boeing 777-300ERs. In today’s highly connected world, there’s no excuse for not having Wi-Fi on a long-haul flight. Access to Wi-Fi during long-haul flights has become almost a necessity nowadays , particularly for business travelers who need to stay productive and connected while in the air.

While airlines may have challenges in providing Wi-Fi services (technical limitations or even cost considerations), this amenity has become increasingly standard among many major carriers.

Although Thai Airways is known for its excellent service, I didn’t really get that feeling during this flight, which was the most surprising part of the overall flight experience.

Although the cabin crew was friendly and courteous, I found a lack of engagement and personal touches. The crew was also a bit slow to respond to my requests, particularly during the meal service.

The cabin crew also failed to be proactive. For example, a flight attendant walked by my seat 4 times before clearing off my table tray after the dinner service. It was only cleared once I placed all my dirty napkins in my food, making it obvious it was time to clear my tray table. Still, the flight attendant could have been proactive and asked.

Overall, I found the service below the standard set by many of Thai’s regional competitors.

We arrived in Frankfurt around 7 a.m., about 40 minutes behind our scheduled arrival time. As I entered the Frankfurt terminal, I looked back to take a picture of the 777-300ER that had transported us from Bangkok.

Thai Airways 777 300er at Frankfurt

Since I had a tight connection ahead of my Singapore Airlines flight to New York, I quickly headed toward security screening.

I was genuinely excited to finally have the opportunity to fly Thai Airways in business class. Unfortunately, though, the experience wasn’t all that great.

The aircraft was old and visibly outdated, it lacked Wi-Fi, and the seat lacked storage and any sort of privacy. I think having a true window seat blocking some of the aisle activity would have made this aspect of the flight a little better.

The soft product was not much better. I found the service to be average at best, not up to par with many other international airlines. The food was not bad, but again, I didn’t find it on par with other Asian carriers like Singapore Airlines or Japan Airlines.

So far, this was the least impressive long-haul premium cabin I’ve flown all year. With the many incredible international airlines in Asia, I’m in no rush to fly this airline again. However, if I need to fly Thai Airways, I will hopefully get the chance to fly on one of its newer planes.

Hi, I’m Serena. I am currently a dental student who got the travel bug after studying abroad in 2019 with Semester at Sea, a program that allowed me to travel around the world for a semester on a cruise ship, visiting 10 countries along the way.

After I came back from my life-changing semester, I was hooked on travel. But a few months later, COVID-19 hit.

It wasn’t until my mom added me to the 10xTravel Insiders Facebook group in early 2022 that I learned about points and miles. I began absorbing as much information as possible because I wanted to travel before starting dental school. However, I was saving money for school, so I wanted to make sure I traveled as frugally as possible.

La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

In front of the entrance to La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. See the crane in the background? This magnificent church has been under construction since 1883. I hope to return one day once it’s finished!

Soon after joining the 10xTravel Insiders group, I saw someone post about a Round the World” (RTW) ticket bookable through All Nippon Airways (ANA) , a Japanese airline based in Tokyo. They detailed how a RTW ticket could let them travel to about 10 countries in business class for fewer than 200,000 points.

After looking into it further, I learned that a handful of airlines offer some version of a RTW ticket, letting you book a series of plane tickets for a deeply discounted price in points. Each airline has nuanced rules specific to their program, but they all require circumnavigation around the world.

I read up on each type of RTW ticket and decided to book with ANA because I found it has reasonable restrictions, plenty of partners (it’s part of Star Alliance) and one of the best redemption rates.

How I Earned the Points and Miles Needed for an RTW Award

After I decided to target the ANA Round the World redemption for my summer travels, I needed to acquire enough ANA miles. However, the only flexible currency that transfers to ANA Mileage Club is American Express Membership Rewards.

At the time, my only travel credit card was the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Luckily, in spring of 2022, The Platinum Card® from American Express was offering 150,000 Amex points in exchange for spending $6,000. I knew 150,000 Membership Rewards points would be enough to book a RTW ticket with ANA, so I applied for the card.

At the time I was working a gap-year job as a software engineer. Because the job required travel, my company reimbursed the annual fee of one premium credit card as one of the employee perks, which made applying for the Amex Platinum Card even more of a no-brainer.

About a day after applying, I was approved for the card. I was able to meet the minimum-spending requirement in less than a month by paying rent and for LASIK surgery.

The Flights I Booked

The hardest part about an ANA Round the World trip is actually finding the award availability. I was fairly flexible prior to booking and had only two requirements: I needed to be in Barcelona by June 12 to catch a cruise (with Semester at Sea friends), and I wanted to go to Thailand. Otherwise, I was happy to go wherever there was availability.

My final itinerary ended up being as follows.

This itinerary followed all the ANA RTW itinerary rules:

  • You must travel in one direction, with no backtracking (West to East or East to West). I traveled West to East. Although ANA advertises no backtracking allowed, some backtracking is allowed within a single country (for example, my flight from Newark to Rochester) or to get to a Star Alliance hub.
  • You must fly across both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans once. I crossed the Atlantic on my segment from Boston to London and the Pacific on my segment from Tokyo to Newark.
  • Up to eight stopovers are allowed (up to three in Europe and up to four in Japan). Note that ANA considers Türkiye part of its Europe region. I originally was planning to stop for a few days in Lisbon, but because I was already stopping in London, Barcelona, and Istanbul, I had to make Lisbon a layover (defined as any stop that is shorter than 24 hours) instead of a stopover.
  • The itinerary must take more than 10 days. Mine was over the course of 31 days.
  • Up to 12 flight sectors are allowed. I had a total of 12 flight sectors. Up to 12 flight sectors means up to 12 actual flights.
  • Up to four ground transport sectors are allowed. I had two ground transport sectors (aka open jaws). I arranged my own transport between Barcelona and Madrid (a train), as well as between Istanbul and Kayseri (an inexpensive flight).
  • You must start and end in the same country. I started and ended in Rochester, which meant I didn’t need any repositioning flights. That being said, one way to maximize an ANA RTW award is by starting on one coast of the U.S. and ending on the other (note that Hawaii also counts as the same country).

Rochester International Airport - ANA Round-the-World Trip

It was convenient to start the trip from my home airport in Rochester.

This entire itinerary cost 125,000 ANA Mileage Club miles, which I transferred from American Express at a 1:1 ratio, and $652.37 in taxes and fees. All the flights were in business class, except for the flights within the U.S. and the flight from Bangkok to Tokyo. I made the final booking with ANA exactly one month before departure.

Before I transferred points, I called ANA many times to firm up an itinerary. Their website is a bit clunky, so once you have a good outline of the itinerary you want, it’s best to call. Although I would often be on hold for two to three hours at a time, many of their reps are helpful and will help you look for alternative flights if you are stuck finding a way to get from one city to another.

They will also let you know the exact number of points you need so you know how many to transfer with ANA Round the World Trip.

The points transfer from Amex to ANA wasn’t instant—it took about two days to process. As soon as the points came into my ANA account, I called to book. However, not all of my planned flights were still available.

I had previously found flights from Istanbul to Bangkok with a connection in Cairo, which was no longer an option. Luckily, I had gotten an amazing agent who found a way for me to connect in Dhaka instead, which actually meant I needed fewer points than I had transferred (I had transferred 145,000 points assuming the previous itinerary would hold).

In the end, I probably made about a dozen calls to ANA customer service and spent quite a bit of time figuring out an itinerary that worked, but it was all worth it. Flying in business class around the world using just one card’s welcome offer was incredible, but it definitely spoiled me.

ANA Round-the-World Trip - long haul business-class flight

My first long haul business-class flight AND my first time being handed Champagne when boarding!

Flight Highlights

This trip allowed me to experience business class on United Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines and Thai Airways. As it was my first time flying in business class, and my first time flying any sort of long-haul flight, I enjoyed every second.

Best sleep: United Airlines

The Saks Fifth Avenue bedding was so comfortable. I really appreciated the memory foam pillow and fluffy duvet. My seat had a lot of space, and I slept like a baby on my United flights from Boston to London and from Tokyo to Newark. I also enjoyed the Away amenity kits that matched my newly purchased Away carry-on bag.

Best short-haul flight: TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal - ANA Round-the-World Trip

I was impressed with my TAP Air Portugal seat leaving London-Heathrow, considering the flight was shorter than three hours.

I was expecting a small plane for my flight from London to Lisbon (a 2.5 hour flight) with business-class seats similar to domestic first class in the U.S. I could not have been more wrong—my seat was fully lie-flat with a large TV and dedicated business-class flight attendants. This was before I learned more about how the business-class experience can differ depending on the specific plane model you’re flying on. I’m not exactly sure what plane it was, but I was impressed.

Best food: Turkish Airlines

in-flight meal on a Turkish Airlines

My in-flight meal on a Turkish Airlines flight leaving Istanbul

From the plating and the silverware to the actual taste of the food, I was impressed with Turkish Airlines. The meal included multiple courses, and everything tasted great. The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge in Istanbul was also fantastic with endless baklava and Turkish pizza.

Best service: Thai Airways

Thai Airways business-class flight

I also had so much space on my Thai Airways business-class flight, and the service was incredible!

My flight from Istanbul to Dhaka on Turkish Airlines was delayed by two hours causing me to almost miss my flight to Bangkok. However, as soon as I stepped off the plane in Dhaka, a Thai Airways representative was waiting to escort me to my gate. I was the last person on the plane—they had delayed the flight from Dhaka to Bangkok by 15 minutes just for me.

My escort assured me that he’d do his best to make sure my bags made it, and if they didn’t, he would send them on the next flight to get them to me as soon as possible. Sure enough, the bags didn’t make it, but they were dropped off at my hostel less than 12 hours after I landed.

Trip Highlights of my ANA Round-the-World Trip

This trip was one for the books. While there were many highlights, the top ones that come to mind are as follows.

Being in London the weekend of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022. I flew to London because that’s what the award availability was, but I didn’t even know that the Jubilee was happening until I arrived. There were festivals going on in the streets, concerts in front of Buckingham Palace and Jubilee-themed everything (even in the Heathrow Airport’s lounges).

Elephant Nature Park

Visiting so many great lounges. Although I had lounge access with my American Express Platinum Card, I didn’t even need it much because I was flying in business pretty much everywhere. The Singapore Airlines lounge in London Heathrow Airport and the Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul were my favorites.

  • If you want to book a round-the-world trip, you must be flexible. I had multiple long layovers, which I used to get a taste of Boston and Lisbon, and spend some time with my brother in New York. Honestly, I didn’t mind the layovers at all because they allowed me to fly around the world in business class.
  • I found the best time to call ANA was right when their office opens in the morning. When I did this, I would typically be on hold for less than 10 minutes. Any other time I called, I would be on hold for more than two hours.
  • I tried to book another RTW trip in the fall 2023 for a trip I was going on in December but was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, taxes and fees have gone up since my 2022 trip. Additionally, now that people are traveling again, business-class availability is much harder to find. Undaunted, I still went to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and India (using points, of course).
