How to Travel from Florence to Cinque Terre (By Train, Car, or Tour)

Traveling from Florence to Cinque Terre is one of those journeys that pops up on a huge number of vacations in Italy: who wouldn’t want to see both the Cradle of the Renaissance and the colorful Ligurian fishing villages of Cinque Terre on a single trip?

Plus, there’s also the fact that Florence and Cinque Terre look so temptingly close to each other on a map–but there’s a bit more to the journey than meets the eye.

We’ve traveled around the region extensively, visiting both destinations many times.

Here’s what you need to know before hopping in the car or on a train to travel between Cinque Terre and Florence!

We’ll cover this in more detail below, but as it’s one of the most common questions about traveling between Florence and Cinque Terre, we’ll address it right up front: we don’t believe that taking a day trip between these two spots is a great idea.

And, if limited travel time makes it necessary, taking a day trip from Florence to Cinque Terre (or vice-versa, though that’s much less common) is a case where booking a popular organized tour like this is by far the best option.

Because the journey takes an average of 3 hours each way!

Y ou can get it down to 2.5 hours each way if you time your transitions perfectly or are able to hit the direct train in both directions (and it doesn’t run late) — but 3 is much more common, with 4 being far from unheard of.

You do have the option of driving yourself, and that will give you far more flexibility than taking the train.

If you do that, though, be prepared to park your car in the garage at La Spezia’s train station and hop the train to get into Cinque Terre proper from there.

Now, I’m not saying it’s impossible–just that there are a thousand other, arguably better, ways to spend one of your precious days in Italy.

Ideally, we recommend booking a well-reviewed tour like this if you want to take a day trip to Cinque Terre from Florence.

That way, you’ll have the benefit of a driver who knows the way, you won’t have to pay for (potentially pricey) car rental fees, parking, or gas, and your itinerary will be in the hands of an expert.

More on that below–but keep it in mind.

To take the train from Florence to Cinque Terre , you’ll first need to travel from the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station to La Spezia Centrale .

This will frequently involve changing trains, most commonly in Pisa.

If you keep an eye out for it, there is also a direct train between the two places, which takes about 2.5 hours and runs every couple of hours.

If you hope the hit this going both directions, be sure to plan carefully ahead of time!

Keep in mind, of course, that once you get to La Spezia, your journey isn’t over!

F rom there, you’ll need to switch trains and head to Cinque Terre itself.

The closest village to La Spezia Centrale is Riomaggiore, which is about 10 minutes away by train.

The furthest village is Monterosso al Mare, which is about 25 minutes away.

… people who intend to spend at least one night in Cinque Terre.

With ideal conditions, driving from Florence to Cinque Terre takes about 2.5 hours.

However, we actually don’t recommend taking your car all the way to Cinque Terre. 

Instead, if you’re driving from Florence to Cinque Terre for a day trip, we recommend parking your car at the garage next to La Spezia Centrale and hopping the train (see distances in the train section above) to your village of choice after.

Florence to La Spezia Centrale is still a 2-hour drive with ideal conditions, though, so keep that in mind.

What are ideal conditions? 

You don’t hit traffic, you don’t get lost, you don’t have to make any stops, and you don’t drive more slowly when heading home after dark.

Unfortunately, those conditions–especially the traffic–are not all entirely likely to be met, especially going both directions.

We’ve personally hit bad traffic driving to and from La Spezia more than once.

If you’re traveling from Florence to Cinque Terre and you’re planning on spending the night in the villages (or adjoining La Spezia or Levanto), we recommend not renting a car at all and simply taking the train instead.

Booking a day trip is far less hassle than taking the train, and far less of a headache than driving yourself.

Do you recommend a overnight trip to Cinque Terre with a 4 yr old?

I would say it depends on the four-year-old! Generally, though, I’d imagine an overnight trip to Cinque Terre is easier with kids than a day trip–less pressure to move quickly and fewer crowds to deal with that way.

How many days/nights would you suggest staying in this area? We would like to stay in Monterosso, but do you have any suggestions on which town you enjoyed the most? Thank you!

On average, I’d say two full days (not including the day you travel to Cinque Terre or the day you leave) is long enough to get a good overview without being rushed.

Our personal favorite village is Vernazza, in large part due to the amazing views on either side of the town, but we adore them all and they all have their benefits!

I’m planning a trip to Florence/Cinque next year (assuming everything is open for Americans by then, right now it’s not). But is there a particular time in the year where it’s less crowded with tourists? When would you suggest would be the best time to travel to avoid hi cost and crowds? We’re also going to Spain btw. Hi Adrian! In Cinque Terre, winter is absolutely the best time for avoiding tourists and staying on a budget, though of course it will be closed and some attractions will be closed. Early spring/late fall would give you slightly better weather, but you still won’t want to swim!

In your case, since you’re staying multiple days, I’d definitely recommend taking the train! That goes for traveling from Cinque Terre to Menton, too. 🙂

If you’d like to book a day trip and then just essentially decline the ride home, you should be able to without issue–the only potential flaw would be if there’s not room to transport your luggage. There’s not really a formal structure in place for one-way day trips, and I’d recommend letting the tour provider know your plans in advance, but we’ve booked a day trip and used it as transit from one place to the next more than once, in several countries around the world. No one has turned us down yet!

In your case it’s not necessary at all, though, so I’d only use that option if you really want to enjoy the tour.

About 185 kilometers northwest of Florence , the picturesque coastal area of Cinque Terre makes for a perfect – if long – day trip. Getting to Cinque Terre is tricky, as the mountain roads don't reach all the way into town and require some hiking after the road ends. Fortunately, there are other ways to get to Cinque Terre if you're not up for a hiking adventure, including trains and boats.

Cinque Terre is made up of five villages set over a rugged coastline of cliffs and hills and connected to each other by a system of precarious mountain roads. For those in search of adventure, Cinque Terre offers the perfect hiking landscape; for those looking for a summer destination with incredible views over the coastal landscape, it doesn't get much better than Cinque Terre either.

Regardless of why you're visiting Cinque Terre , here's our list of the best ways to get from Florence to Cinque Terre – and how to move from village to village while you're there.

1. From Florence to Cinque Terre by Tour

For a completely unique experience, you should consider the Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence with optional hiking . In this active 13-hour tour , you'll have a chance to hike 5.5 kilometers on the hills around Cinque Terre.

Your journey starts in Florence when you board a coach for the two-hour drive to Cinque Terre. Your professional English-speaking guide will spend some time telling you about the area, the five fishing villages of Cinque Terre, and the national park you're about to visit. Once you arrive at the park, your guide will take you on a hike on the scenic trail leading to Corniglia (one of the fishing villages).

Because this is a wild area, trails are only minimally maintained - you can expect no handrails, narrow paths high on cliffs, and a steep climb of almost 400 stone steps at the end of the hike. If this doesn't sound like something you'd want to do, it's also possible to skip the hiking section of the tour and instead take a train between the villages.

Once you arrive in Corniglia , you'll have some free time to discover the village, enjoy the views, and maybe have a quick lunch or coffee before you start your second hike towards Vernazza.

From here, you'll board the train with your guide to reach Monterosso , where the area's most beautiful beaches and artisan shops are located. If the weather cooperates, you'll be able to take a boat to the last of the fishing villages, Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre's largest village and home to beautiful pastel-colored buildings. After hiking back to Manarola, you'll be able to board your vehicle and relax on the way back to Florence.

If you'd rather have a more relaxed day, the Cinque Terre Day Trip with Transport from Florence allows you to explore the fishing villages using a combination of trains, boats, and your own vehicle, no hiking necessary. This full-day tour starts in the heart of Florence as you board your vehicle and head towards the coast.

Your first stop is in the medieval village of Riomaggiore, where you can enjoy a postcard view over the tiny harbor. Your guide will then take you to Manarola for a stroll of the shoreline and some of the best photos you'll take in the area.

Next, you'll travel by boat to Monterosso, where you'll have free time for lunch, to explore the village, or to jump in the blue waters of the bay. Your last stop is in Vernazza, a world-famous producer of olive oil. Explore the village at your own pace until it's time to return to Florence.

2. From Florence to Cinque Terre by Train

Taking the train to Cinque Terre requires a few changes along the way but it's still the most convenient way to reach the coastal area. Your trip starts at Florence SMN Train Station, where you should look for the direct Regionale train to La Spezia, the second-largest city in the Liguria region.

There are also trains with a connection in Pisa, but this can get confusing and won't save you any money. Trains leave from Florence's station about twice an hour and reach La Spezia train station about two hours later.

Once at La Spezia, you'll have to switch to the 5 Terre Express train, a fast-regional train that runs every 15 minutes and connects all five villages. If you plan on visiting all villages, it's cheaper to buy a Cinque Terre Train Card, which gives you access to unlimited train travel and also allows you to access the hiking trails within the Cinque Terre National Park, which requires an entry fee. Every village has a train station.

3. From Florence to Cinque Terre by Train and Ferry

Once you arrive in La Spezia by train, you can also continue on to Cinque Terre by boat. Between April 1 st and November 1 st , a number of large boats and ferries connect the city of La Spezia with four of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre - the village of Corniglia cannot be reached by boat as it is located up on a hill.

To get to Corniglia, you can hike from Manarola (on a moderate 5.5-kilometer forested trail) or from Vernazza (a 3.2-kilometer easy trail with great views over the water.)

The boat is a much slower option than the train (the trip from La Spezia can take up to two hours) but it also offers the best views. Taking the ferry is almost like taking a cruise - you'll get a chance to truly appreciate the soft colors of the stone buildings rising up on the hills, the blue foamy water hitting the rocky coastline, and the beautiful harbor area as the boats approach the port.

Keep in mind that because ferries take much longer than trains to reach the villages, this might not be the best option if you're only visiting for one day or want to visit all the villages.

4. From Florence to Cinque Terre by Car

About 190 kilometers separate Florence and Cinque Terre, a pretty 2.5-hour drive that takes you through cities like Lucca and La Spezia ( Pisa is just a short detour away, too) on the A11/E76 highway. Anything that starts with an A (autostrada) indicates a toll road, so make sure you have cash or a credit card ready.

Keep in mind that traffic can be difficult during high season, as the roads are more packed and often slower moving. This can make it harder to do Cinque Terre as a day trip from Florence , and it would make more sense to plan for at least a couple of days at your destination.

The Cinque Terre villages are not very car-friendly, and many streets are completely closed to traffic. They're also narrow, with very sharp, difficult turns. If you have a medium to large car and are not used to the tight turns, it won't be fun. Plus, parking within the villages can be a nightmare.

Even if you have a car, it's best to park it at a place like the garage at La Spezia Central train station and then use the train to move between villages. Cinque Terre is best explored on foot anyway, so you won't miss the car.

When it comes to venturing from Florence to the enchanting Cinque Terre, hopping on a bus isn't the most seamless choice. The journey brings its fair share of challenges,  namely because no direct bus routes to these charming coastal villages. 

An alternative route involves a lengthy 4-hour journey, initially by bus to Langhirano, with a possible taxi connection.  Another option is taking a bus to Genoa and transferring to a train to reach Cinque Terre, but this route is more time-consuming and complex compared to the efficient train journey.

What's more, this bus journey doesn't offer significant cost savings, making it a less favoured choice for travellers seeking a smoother and more direct path from Florence to Cinque Terre.

Driving from Florence to Cinque Terre can offer convenience, provided you have access to a car during your Florence stay. Yet, renting a car exclusively for a day trip to Cinque Terre might not be the most cost-effective or practical choice, especially with the availability of efficient train services.

Be prepared for some costs, including tolls, which can amount to around £30, fuel expenses, and parking fees, typically at approximately £1.50 per hour.

While it’s possible also to reach Cinque Terre from Florence by car, this option is great only if you don’t mind driving along narrow and bendy roads and if you have a hotel with private parking. This is because once you reach the Cinque Terre, you have to leave your car outside of the protected area of the five villages.

Florence to Cinque Terre by train – Why and how to book

3 reasons to reach cinque terre from florence by train.

• Bendy roads. Unless you come from a mountainous area and love driving across narrow and bendy roads like my husband (used to Afghanistan’s streets), you and your passengers are probably going to enjoy the view more if you travel by train.
• Restricted area. You can’t access the five villages by car and you will need to leave it outside the Parco delle Cinque Terre protected area. From one town to the other, you will still have to travel by local train or walking/hiking when it’s nice weather.
• Limited parking. You are in Italy, after all, so parking will definitely be limited, especially in the high season. In fact, ideally, only having a hotel with private parking can ensure you always have a spot for your car.

How to book your Florence to Cinque Terre train ticket

The only railway company that runs from Florence to Cinque Terre is Trenitalia. You can buy your ticket from the Trenitalia website itself or from the Omio travel website .

From Florence to Cinque Terre, there is no direct train, so you will need to change once or twice. Usually, the changes are in Pisa or La Spezia.

The duration of the trip Florence to Cinque Terre by train varies between 3 to 4 hours, depending on which station you are changing trains and how long you have to wait.

Usually, the trains from Florence to Cinque Terre are regional or fast regional (regional veloce), and the price is fixed at €16.05.

There are also some traveling options with the Intercity trains but that often involves two changes (Pisa and La Spezia Centrale) and costs slightly more expensive, €24.10. This option takes a little less time, around 2 hours and 55 minutes instead of 3 hours or 3 hours and 40 minutes, but if you have luggage, it might not be very handy.

You can find also an option that includes a trait with the Freccia high-speed train but it takes as long as with the Intercity because a lot of it depends on how long you have to wait for the next train.

Traveling by train around the Cinque Terre

Once you have reached the Cinque Terre from Florence by train, you have two ways to travel around the five villages: by train and on foot.

When I visited the Cinque Terre, I had limited time and it was cold season, so I opted for the train and visited all five towns. This is a local train that you can book on the same Trenitalia website and each journey costs around €2.50.

You can also buy a Cinque Terre Express card that costs €18.20 for one day with unlimited trips, €11.40 for kids between 4 and 12 years old, or €14.80 for those over 70.

There is also a family ticket and for the price of 48€, it covers 2 adults and 2 kids 4-11 years old. By purchasing the local train card, you will also enjoy other benefits such as guided tours, discounts on admission tickets, and the local bus included.

The Cinque Terre Treno Card is available to be purchased at the Tourist Information Points within the Parco delle Cinque Terre, at the train stations of Levanto and La Spezia, and also online here or from the mypass app . If there is a yellow or red weather alert, they won’t sell the train card.

To reach the other towns of the Italian Riviera, such as the beautiful Portovenere, Lerici, Tellaro, and the town of Le Grazie where is also the military base of Varignano, the school to form Italian Navy’s deep-sea divers .

How to get from florence to cinque terre.

Thanks to their iconic monuments and marvelous landscapes, Florence and Cinque Terre are two of the most visited places in Italy , those places that you cannot miss, especially if you are planning your first trip to the country of “La Dolce Vita”. How to get from Florence to Cinque Terre is one of the most popular questions that people visiting Italy ask Google.

This post is the answer to your question with all the information you need to reach the colored Cinque Terre from Florence and vice versa .

How far is Cinque Terre from Florence?

Cinque Terre, literally the Five Lands, is not in Tuscany . Florence is the main town and regional capital of Tuscany. Instead, Cinque Terre is the name given to five small fisherman villages of Liguria, another region of Italy that borders Tuscany to the northwest.

Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso are the Cinque Terre.

Florence and the Cinque Terre are not as close as many tourists may think. The distance between them is about 180 km, 112 miles. So, more than two hours, both by car and train.

How much time should I spend at the Cinque Terre?

The answer depends above all on the time at your disposal, but also on your way of traveling. If you have time, my suggestion is to spend at least one or two nights there. The best moments to enjoy Cinque Terre are in the late afternoon and evening when the crowd leaves, and early in the morning before the mass arrives.

Moreover, if you arrive early in the morning you can visit all the villages in one day. Once, I did it. I arrived in La Spezia, I bought the Cinque Terre train card, and then I went straight to Monterosso. The time for a quick tour and I started the panoramic path that brings me to Vernazza. From there I reached the other places by train. Another tip for you is to be in Manarola for sunset to see the colored houses during the golden hour.

My suggestion is to avoid, if possible, both Cinque Terre and Florence in Summer . Florence is sadly crowded and hot. Cinque Terre is a bit cooler thanks to the sea breeze but really overcrowded. Spring and Autumn are a bit better, at least with the weather. Winter is the coldest season but probably the best to enjoy these places out of the mass tourism .

As a local, I wish to encourage people to discover other wonders of Tuscany and of Italy when mass tourism overcrowds the must-see places such as Firenze and Cinque Terre. But I understand whoever can take a holiday only in summer.

To go from Florence to Cinque Terre you have plenty of ways: car, train, boat, and guided tours.

Driving your car

The only village of the Five Lands easy to reach by car is Monterosso. Arriving from Florence, Monterosso is the farthest. All the others are not easy to reach by car because of the narrow and dangerous bending road. There is also no way to park your vehicle.

Coming from Florence, my suggestion is to stop and park in La Spezia , the biggest town in the area, and the main HUB to explore the Cinque Terre. From there, you can easily get the train or the boat to move between the villages. This solution is good both if you have only a day and if you stay a few days sleeping somewhere in the villages.

Other solutions by car may be:

• Drive straight to Monterosso  which is easier to reach and where it is easier to park. Book your room there and explore CT by foot, boat, or train.
• Book your accommodation in La Spezia  and take the boat or train to CT every day.
• Pass the CT and  go to Levanto , a lovely seaside village just out of the National park of Cinque Terre. Levanto is a perfect base to explore the CT and you find more choices of accommodation, bars, shops, and supermarkets. Then use the train and panoramic paths to reach Monterosso and the other iconic villages.

Take highway no A11 from Florence to Viareggio, then take the A12 going north, following the direction for La Spezia and Genova . The drive lasts about 2 hours to La Spezia, 2,30 hours to Monterosso, and 2,10 hours to Levanto.

If you have time, in between Florence and Cinque Terre there are many places that deserve a visit . I think about Pistoia , the walled town of Lucca , or the seaside Tuscan resorts such as Viareggio, Pietrasanta, or Forte dei Marmi . Very close to La Spezia you can also stop a few hours to visit Carrara and the famous white marble quarries where they extract the most precious marble in the world.

Travel slowly by train

A train from Florence to Cinque Terre is probably the best mean of transportation between these two popular destinations in Italy.

You enjoy the Tuscan landscapes out of your window without stressing yourself driving and looking for a parking slot.

Each of the five villages has a small railway station but you surely have to change the train in La Spezia Centrale which is the biggest and closest town to Cinque Terre.

My suggestion is to buy a ticket from Florence SMN to La Spezia. Once you arrive, if you haven’t done it online, you can buy the Cinque Terre Card that includes unlimited trips.

There are trains almost every 30/40 minutes from Florence SMN Train Station to La Spezia Centrale . Some of them are Direct trains, others require a change in Pisa Centrale. Direct routes do not mean faster routes. In this case,  Regionale  trains stop even in the smaller towns and the journey lasts more than routes with changes.

• The  direct “Regionale” train  brings you to La Spezia in about 2 hours and a half with no changes. La Spezia train station is also the end of the line and you can’t get wrong. The cost of a one-way ticket is approx. € 13,80.
• Routes with changes.  In this case, you need to get a train to  Pisa Centrale , then take another train direction, La Spezia. The trip will last approx. 2 hours and 10 minutes and the one-way ticket costs between € 13,80 and € 20,00.

You can buy tickets online on  Trenitalia.com , through Trenitalia App, through the automatic machines at the station, and at the ticket office but usually, there is a long queue.

From Florence to Cinque Terre by Boat

During summertime, starting in the middle of June, you can reach Portovenere and Cinque Terre by boat departing from the coast of Tuscany. The Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre – Golfo Dei Poeti offers a daily cruise to Cinque Terre departing from the marina of Viareggio, Forte Dei Marmi, Massa, and Carrara.

For example, you can reach Viareggio by car or by train and from there you get the boat that will bring you to CT cruising the Ligurian Sea. The itinerary usually includes one hour stop in Portovenere, then you will reach Monterosso, the last of the five villages. While cruising you have the opportunity to admire all the villages and their colored houses from the sea. In Monterosso, you have about 3 hours to enjoy the beach or walk around the tiny village before getting on board and going back to Tuscany.

Another solution is to reach La Spezia by car or train and get the boat from the marina. In this case, the ferry will stop in all the villages (except for Corniglia which is on top of the hill). Buying the daily ticket that costs € 35,00, you can use the boat service as much as you want and go back to La Spezia at the end of the day.

Book the best Escorted Tour

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this solution but if you haven’t enough time and CT is a must of your Italy trip, a guided Cinque Terre Day tour from Florence is a valid alternative.

Be prepared for staying out for 12/13 hours, spending at least 6 hours in a minivan or big bus.

The good side of these tours is that you could meet nice people to travel with , especially if you are a solo traveler. It is always nice sharing nice moments with good people. It is part of the experience.

Some tours include also a short visit to the leaning tower of Pisa. In my opinion, this is totally insane. Avoid these and choose only full-day tours to the Five Towns.

Moreover, looking for the best day tours from Florence to Cinque Terre, I found this one that includes a stop at Portovenere, another fisherman-colored village that deserves to be seen.

Cinque Terre Train Card

Once you arrived, if you plan to explore CT by train, which is my advice, there is a special card, called Cinque Terre Train Card that allows you to get unlimited trains along the route from/to La Spezia – Levanto.

You can buy the card online on the Parco Nazionale 5 Terre website , at La Spezia train station or at the “Centro Accoglienza” of every town.

The card is valid for 1, 2, or 3 days and it also includes free access to the walking paths of the National Park (otherwise you have to pay about 7 € each walk).

The cost for a single person for 1 day is € 16,00 and there are special rates for over 70 and families.

By buying this card, you can easily move from one place to another without the stress of buying tickets every time. Also, you save money because every run would cost you € 4,00 per person.

Please note that you are not allowed to walk along the panoramic path of the National Park without proper shoes. So, don’t visit Cinque Terre with Flip Flops!

To the north, you’ll find the largest of the villages, Monterosso, and the furthest south lies Riomaggiore. In between, you’ll find the smaller towns of Corniglia, Manarola, and Vernazza.

Florence to Cinque Terre Train

Journey Duration: Average journey time roughly 2 hours 40 minutes

Undoubtedly the fastest and most cost-effective way to travel between these two Italian destinations is to travel from Florence to Cinque Terre by train. This particular route is not a direct option as you won’t find any trains connecting Florence non-stop to any of the 5 villages in Cinque Terre. 

Instead, when travelling on the Florence to Cinque Terre train route, you can catch a direct train from Florence to La Spezia. From here you can connect onto the regional train route that connects and travels through all 5 towns in Cinque Terre.

Florence to Cinque Terre by Train: Services

The Florence Cinque Terre train service, operated by national operator Trenitalia, will involve a roughly 2 hours 30 minutes train journey from Florence to La Spezia. Then connecting onwards La Spezia to Riomaggiore is a short 8-minute train ride, and then 5 minutes onwards from each village to the next.

There are several departures from Florence each day, spread out throughout the day on this direct train service. 

Cinque Terre to Florence Train: Fares & Buying Tickets

Depending on the train service booked, from Florence to La Spezia, you can expect to pay around €14 for a one-way adult ticket. Then onwards on the regional service connecting to the villages of Cinque Terre, it is €4 one-way per single journey.

Top Tip: You may want to consider getting yourself the Cinque Terre Train Card that will allow you access to unlimited train travel on the Cinque Terre trains as well as the hiking trails. When arriving in La Spezia you can head over to the information desk to buy your tickets there. 

Currently the 1-day train card costs €16 per adult – so consider the amount of travel you’d like to do and compare it to the €4 cost per point to point journey to see if it is worth your while.

Train Stations: Florence and Cinque Terre Train Stations

Departing on the train from Florence to Cinque Terre via La Spezia you’ll depart mainly from Florence’s main Santa Maria Novella station, although some trains do leave from the Campo di Marte station. Be sure to check this beforehand.

Make sure that you book the train service that runs to La Spezia Centrale, as this is the station in La Spezia where you’ll connect onward on the regional service to the various towns in Cinque Terre. 

Florence to Cinque Terre Bus Service

Journey Duration: 4 hours 30 minutes from Florence to La Spezia

Travelling from Florence to Cinque Terre by bus is another way to reach this dreamy region of Italy from Firenze. That said, this bus route, operated by Marinobus, is fairly limited, offering only 1 departure daily and at a much higher cost compared to travel by train.

Total travel time is around 4 hours 30 minutes and includes a changeover in Bologna. Similarly to the train, this bus route will travel to La Spezia from where you’ll connect onto the regional train service to access the various towns within Cinque Terre.  

Bus from Florence to Cinque Terre: Fares & Buying Tickets

Currently, a one-way bus ticket costs around €70, which compared to the train ticket price is quite a bit more expensive.

You can compare availability and book the bus service against the train service through Omio to compare what makes sense for your itinerary.

Driving from Florence to Cinque Terre by Car

Journey Duration: Quickest direct route – roughly 2 hours to La Spezia

If you happen to be renting a car and planning on embarking on a road trip, you may be tempted to travel from Florence to Cinque Terre by car.

It is worth noting though that the towns of Cinque Terre does have vehicle restrictions in place and whilst some routes and areas are accessible by car, others provide access to residents only. 

Given the windy narrow roads, coupled with these restrictions, it is far better to travel say to La Spezia or Levanto by car and then travelling onward by train. 

The distance from Florence to Cinque Terre is roughly 170 km / 105 miles, although it’s slightly less to reach La Spezia and should take around 2 hours via the A11 motorway.

This route via the A11 does include sections of toll roads, so a good resource to consult to help factor in costs is to plot your journey on the Via Michelin site . The site will give you rough estimates in terms of toll and fuel costs, perfect to help you budget out your trip.

The closest airports to Cinque Terre is both Pisa or Genoa that are both around 1 hour 30 minutes from Cinque Terre. Given the close proximity, travellers could also arrive into Florence and then drive or travel by train as outlined in this guide above.

Where is Livorno Cruise Port Located?

Livorno Cruise Port is located within the main Port of Livorno which sits right beside Livorno city, on the northwest coast of Italy.

Within the Tuscany region in Italy, Livorno is the closest cruise port to Pisa and Florence.

Pisa is a 40-minute taxi ride or a 20-minute train journey from Livorno Cruise Port and Florence is a 1.5-hour taxi ride or train journey from the cruise terminal.

The Livorno Cruise Port is vast with berths that can accommodate up to 8 cruise ships at any one time. The berths are dotted around the harbor, on different piers.

Beside each berth are a taxi rank, tourist information center, car rental stand, and opportunities to book day trips and tours. 

How to Get to Livorno City Center from the Cruise Port

The cruise port is located within a working industrial port and to journey from the cruise port to Livorno city, you’d have to travel through the working part of the port which is in fact not permitted on foot for health and safety reasons.

The good news is that the port offers a shuttle service from the cruise terminal to Piazza Grande, in the city center.

From Piazza Grande, it’s a 30-minute walk to Livorno Centrale, the main train station in the city.

Alternatively, there is a taxi rank beside every cruise terminal so you can grab a taxi directly to your destination.

Are There Free Shuttles From Livorno Cruise Port?

There are shuttle buses to Livorno city center offered to every cruise ship passenger. However, the cost depends on your cruise liner. Some cruise lines offer shuttles for free to their cruise passengers, and others charge a fee that you can expect to be around €5.

Can You Walk into Livorno from Your Cruise Ship?

It isn’t possible to walk from the cruise terminal into Livorno city center.

Health and safety regulations don’t permit walking in the industrial port. Even if it was allowed, the distance between the cruise ship berths and the city is very great and it would take you over an hour to walk into Livorno which isn’t practical.

There are however shuttles available that will take you from Livorno Cruise Port straight into the city of Livorno dropping you at Piazza Grande, a key square in the middle of the city.

Are there Taxis Available from Livorno Cruise Port?

Yes, there is a taxi rank beside every cruise ship in Livorno Cruise Port which will have enough taxis in it to accommodate all passengers looking to get a taxi.

Best Shore Excursions from the Livorno Cruise Port

Livorno Cruise Port is one of the busiest cruise ports in Italy due to its fantastic central location near many of Italy’s most extraordinary attractions.

There’s a host of things to see and do nearby. I’ll delve into some of my favorites below.

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa

Only a 40-minute drive or 20-minute train ride from Livorno city center, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa really is a must for anyone visiting Livorno! The 56-meter high 14th-century tower can be found in the heart of the city of Pisa.

The tower is located beside the impressive Cattedrale di Pisa (Cathedral), and Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptist Church), enabling you to marvel at a number of incredible landmarks on your visit.

Trains run between Livorno and Pisa a couple of times per hour making it a quick and convenient way to journey between the two cities. From Pisa station, it’s a 20-minute walk to the famous tower.

Alternatively, buses run every 10 minutes between the station and Torre 1, a bus stop just outside the square where the tower is found.

Another way to reach the Leaning Tower of Pisa is on a guided tour from Livorno.  This full-day tour  combines a visit to the tower with a trip to Florence, another incredible city in Italy.

2. Florence

Florence is the vibrant capital of the Tuscany region in Italy. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city is famed for its stunning medieval architecture and monuments as well as museums.

It’s no surprise that a day trip to Florence is a must for many cruisers who arrive at Livorno Cruise Port.

Florence can be reached via train. Trains run from Livorno to Florence several times per day, roughly once per hour. The journey is direct (you don’t need to change trains) and takes 1 and a half hours each way.

3. Cinque Terre

Just north of Livorno is a beautiful stretch of coastline known as Cinque Terre, characterized by colorful settlements which are stacked upon cliffs in bays that arc around turquoise waters.

The area encompasses 5 fishing villages, which make up part of the Cinque Terre National Park , an area of outstanding natural beauty.

You can journey to Cinque Terre from Livorno Cruise Port via taxi. Alternatively, you can book a tour.  This private tour  spans over 8 hours and visits different villages along the coastline.

San Gimignano is also the perfect location to try a  traditional Tuscan cooking class.

The best way to reach San Gimignano from Livorno port is to take a taxi. The journey should take around 1 and a half hours.

Another great way to visit the town is on a shore excursion tour, such as  this one , which visits both San Gimignano and Volterra, another gorgeous town.

5. Fortezza Vecchia

One of the main attractions in Livorno itself is this 11th-century fort which is right in the middle of Livorno port. It’s a spectacular fortress that is well worth admiring either before or after your main shore excursion.

This fortress, also known as the Old Fort, is the symbol of Livorno. It’s open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9am to 8pm and is free to visit . There is a cafe right next to the fort called Fortezza.

Just 1 hour north from Livorno via road is Lucca, a city perched on the Serchio river. Nestled at the base of the Apuan Alps, this striking city is steeped in history, housing beautiful ancient churches, a clock tower and even traces of a Roman amphitheater, which are hidden behind the city walls.

It’s a 45 taxi ride to reach Lucca . Alternatively, Lucca can be reached via train. In order to visit the city, you’ll have to change trains in Pisa. The train to Pisa from Livorno takes 20 minutes and the second train from Pisa to Lucca takes 30 minutes.

8. Livorno City

For your day docked at Livorno Cruise Port, you may simply wish to explore the surrounding city, which although not as well known as Pisa or Florence, houses its own unique gems.

One of the best ways to explore the city is via a food and market tour.  This walking tour takes you to Livrono’s central market, known as Mercato Centrale.

This is in fact one of the largest markets in Europe. At this lively market, you’ll be able to sample local dishes, snacks, and drinks.

If you are interested in seeing the key sights of the city then a   hop-on hop-off bus tour  of Livorno may be what you’re looking for.

Getting From Livorno Airport to the Cruise Port

The closest airport to the Livorno cruise terminal is Pisa Airport which is 20 km (12.4 miles) north of Livorno.

The easiest way to travel between Pisa Airport and Livorno Cruise Port is by taxi or  private transfer  which typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Taking the train is also an option, although it takes considerably longer and may be challenging if you have lots of luggage.

It’s roughly a 20-minute walk between Pisa Airport and Pisa Centrale, the train station. It’s then a 20-minute train journey to Livorno station, followed by a 30-minute walk to Piazza Grande, where the shuttle buses to the cruise port stop.

A little further away from the cruise port is 900 B&B , a charming B&B in a beautifully restored building that serves a selection of fresh pastries for breakfast.

Hotel Universal is another great option, although it sits just outside the city. Perched right on the seafront, the views from this hotel are exceptional.

Best Time to Visit Livorno

The best time to visit Tuscany is between April and October when the weather is more favorable. The height of summer (June, July, and August) will provide the best weather. The summer months are also the busiest time to visit Livorno and key sights can be very crowded.

➡️ To strike the best balance between good weather and fewer crowds, I’d recommend visiting Tuscany outside of the holiday season. April, May, September, and October are all great months.

How far is livorno center from the cruise port.

Livorno city center is right beside the cruise port. However the sheer size of the cruise port and health and safety guidelines mean that you can’t walk into Livorno city from the cruise terminal. A shuttle bus between the two takes around 10 minutes.

How to get to Livorno train station from the cruise port

There are a number of ways that you can journey to Livorno train station from the cruise terminal.

The easiest way is via taxi. A taxi rank beside each cruise ship allows you to journey directly from your cruise ship to the train station, which will take around 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take the shuttle bus from the cruise port to Piazza Grande in the city center, and from there, it’s a 30-minute walk to Linorvo Train Station.

How far is Pisa from the cruise port?

Pisa is 23 km (14 miles) north of Livorno Cruise Port and can be reached via a 40 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute train ride from Linorvo Train Station.

How far is Florence from Livorno cruise port?

Florence is 93 km (57.8 miles) east of Livorno Cruise Port and can be reached by either a 1-and-a-half-hour train or taxi ride from Livorno.

Can you see Florence and Pisa on the same day?

Yes, it is possible to visit both Florence and Pisa on the same day.

I’d recommend journeying between the two cities via either taxi or as part of a tour. Taking public transport such as the train will certainly be more challenging.

Livorno Cruise Port is a great destination to stop at on your cruise as it allows you the opportunity to visit some of the most iconic cities in Italy, such as Pisa and Florence.

The shuttle bus service offered by the port means it’s very easy to journey into the city and the number of shore excursions on offer here means that there really is no shortage of things to do.
