Inflation is crushing almost all aspects of Americans’ budgets — including their vacations. Prices rose on average 8.6% for the past 12 months ending in May 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And one major travel expense rose way more than that: Rental car prices skyrocketed 24% year over year based on February data.

The Consumer Price Index, which measures prices on items like travel, groceries, clothes and cars, in May 2022 saw the highest inflation reading since December 1981.

Annual inflation rates are a common way to understand economic changes. But when comparing 2022 inflation data to 2021, it’s important to acknowledge how unique the last few years have been. For instance, in 2021, many people’s work schedules were adjusted or reduced, and daily activities came to a standstill due to ongoing closures at bars, restaurants and gyms.

Travel — especially of the international kind — was difficult. But, given such low demand, travel was also generally pretty cheap.

It’s almost certain you’ll pay more for the same trip in 2023 than you did in 2021. But how much more should you expect to pay this year versus past years, when vacations were a bit more normal?

Don't let the averages guide your travel budget

Several organizations put a tremendous amount of effort into understanding how much people spend on travel.

For instance, according to Expedia’s 2022 Traveler Value Index, which surveyed 5,500 adults worldwide in November 2021, Americans plan to spend, on average, $2,353 on their next trip. Separately, market research firm Destination Analysts’ November 2021 survey of more than 1,200 Americans determined that the average American’s leisure travel budget for 2022 is $3,797.

Even NerdWallet tries to peg a dollar figure to vacation spending. Americans intended to spend $1,417, on average, for travel during the 2022 holiday season , according to a September 2022 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of NerdWallet.

But when it comes to vacation budgeting, using the average can be tricky, as your personal travel preferences often dictate your overall spending.

Do you often fly first class to another continent or are you taking short-haul flights on budget carriers?

Do you typically stay in luxury accommodations, like overwater bungalows in the Maldives, or do most trips find you at your grandma’s where you’re staying for free?

Do you dine primarily at Michelin-star restaurants or are you the type to load up on free hotel breakfast ?

Travel styles are highly variable, and you can’t always base your personal budget on a nebulous average sourced from travelers with wide-ranging preferences.

Rather than comparing your spending to averages from surveys, it can make more sense to use your travel budget from past trips and adjust according to today’s inflation rates.

How inflation is shaping travel costs

Especially if you’re building your next vacation budget based on an earlier trip, expect to pay far more now. But compared to pre-pandemic travel, some expenses might be increasing at roughly similar rates — and one major travel expense will likely cost less.

NerdWallet looked at the costs of common travel expenses over the past 10 years using CPI data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here's how those numbers shook out for airfare, travel lodging, rental cars, dining out and entertainment (like movies and concerts).

Airfares are at record highs

Airfares are at record highs, and the rate of increase since 2020 and 2021 is especially shocking given how low airfares dipped in the early part of the pandemic.

The average cost of airfares in May 2022 was 19% higher than the previous month and 38% higher than May 2021. What’s more, the May 2022 price is over 22% higher than the average from March 2019, which would have been the last comparable May before COVID-19-related lockdowns in the U.S.

Lodging prices are volatile

The price for lodging away from home, including hotels and motels, saw one of the biggest swings of any price category throughout the duration of the pandemic.

In December 2020, average hotel prices dropped to their lowest levels since December 2013. Yet it didn’t take long for prices to hit all-time highs. Just seven months later in July 2021, prices had increased 47% to their highest level in the Consumer Price Index.

Fast forward to now, and hotel prices continue to set all-time highs. Given how much seasonality plays into hotel prices, we can expect that the summer months could follow suit.

Meanwhile, many hotels are cutting back on amenities including daily housekeeping and room service . Hospitality companies blame factors including high demand, staffing shortages and supply chain issues .

Car rentals have one of the biggest price increases

Rental cars have had one of the biggest price increases , and renters in summer 2021 got especially pummeled. Prices hit an all-time high in July 2021, and while they’ve slightly recovered, as of May 2022 they’re still around 70% more expensive than they were in May 2019.

At this rate, be prepared for price increases aligned with summer travel demand. You might want to opt out of the rental car altogether this year.

Restaurant spending consistently rises

Food prices consistently rise every year , including in the COVID-19 era. In May 2022, the cost of food away from home is up nearly 7% versus May 2021 and about 15% versus May 2019.

To that end, foodies on a budget may consider turning to street vendors or fast-casual stops for cheaper meals than sit-down restaurants for their 2022 vacation. Those who have access to a kitchen (say, in a vacation home rental or a hotel suite) might consider stopping by local markets or grocery stores for not just the adventure, but also for the chance to buy ingredients to put together at home.

Entertainment expenditures see price increases, too

There have been some slightly larger-than-average jumps for travel-related leisure expenses.

Like restaurants, entertainment prices see fairly consistent increases — save for a small dip in 2020. Luckily for consumers, price increases here haven’t been as drastic as those for dining out.

In May 2022, the average price for movie, theater and concert tickets is up about 6% compared to May 2021 and about 10% compared to May 2019.

Travelers may opt for lower-cost activities rather than paid ones for their 2022 vacation, such as going hiking, checking out free days at museums, aquariums or zoos, playing board games at a brewery or wandering farmers markets.

2023 travel costs vs. pre-pandemic travel costs

On the whole, prices are certainly rising, with rental cars as one of the expenses most likely to give you some newfound sticker shock.

Here’s how average prices have changed since pre-pandemic times:

To account for inflation in your 2023 vacation budget and get a better idea of how much you should expect to spend, you could multiply your trip expenses from past years with this year’s percent changes.

So if you spent $100 on a rental car in May 2019, you could multiply that by 70% and expect to spend about $170 on the same type of rental this year. If you spent $100 on concert tickets in May 2019, multiply that by 10%, and expect to pay about $110 for the same show this year.

And if you don’t have exact numbers from your past trip expenses, realize that expenses like hotels, entertainment and food will likely take a bigger chunk of your travel budget than before the pandemic.

Rental cars will likely cost significantly more, and opting out of this expense altogether could be a smart money move. And there’s a good chance that airfares will cost less.

Planning can minimize inflation's toll on your vacation budget

With airfares still low and rental car prices soaring, perhaps you skip the road trip this year. Fly into a public transit-friendly city like San Francisco, New York City or Boston. If you prefer small-town vibes, ferry to a mostly car-free island like Catalina Island, California, or Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Even though airfares cost more on average today than in the pandemic’s early days, you can take some solace in the fact that you’re more than likely saving on airfare this year than you were pre-pandemic.

Top 5 airlines flying to Anywhere

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

Flight delayed about 2 hrs so it made it a VERY late night

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. the flight from Tampa departed with a delay. The food on board was poor, usually on international airlines alcoholic beverages are offered free of charge , but here it was for a fee, the cutlery was wooden, there were no hot drinks (tea, coffee). This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

Ac was broken so we deplaned, waited 2 hours, taxiing for takeoff they said the plane would not fly so we went back to the gate and got a new plane which took another hour. In all a 4 hour delay for an 80 min flight.

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Delayed..4 times...completely disorganized boarding. After 5 hours they scrambled to move ppl off plane bc they overbooked. Then they didn't have a cabin crew. WiFi on plane didn't work. Zero amenities. Once we boarded we sat on tarmac for an hour. Explore all alternate options including purchasing a pair of hiking boots and walking to your destination instead of flying spirit.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

The crew was courteous and are very well prepared for the job.

I paid just under 200 for flight and luggage, then paid 200 to change the flight, then paid 100 for a carry on. Then the cancelled the flight. Of the 500 I spent they refunded 250. I bought a delta flight for 270 never flew with spirit, but spirit kept 250, not even refunding the 100 for the carry on though they cancelled the flight (for weather on a day with only a slight rain ).

Flight attendants heavily pushed their affinity credit card. Very annoying

They charged me 212.00 for a heavy check in bag at the gate. The pricing and process was so confusing - as if it was designed to purposefully gouge customers who need to board plane. That experience combined with the outrageous price charged will prevent me from ever flying Spirit again. And I’ll be sure to tell the story to anyone who cares to hear.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight was OK. Seats were good no cell phone charges on the plane no TVs or entertainment.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover. Would not allow bags to be checked early so we couldn’t go through security .Had to rent a car for the afternoon to store bags and get a meal. Also incurred a hotel fee. No apology or reason given for the cancellation- just rudeness.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.

Change in the travel price index vs. consumer price index in the U.S. 2022-2023

The travel price index (TPI) published by the U.S. Travel Association includes data on the monthly changes in the consumer price index (CPI) of travel and tourism services in the United States, such as airline fares, lodging, and recreation. Throughout 2022, and particularly in the first half of the year, both the travel and consumer price indexes grew dramatically, with the TPI reporting a staggering 19.4 percent annual increase in May. Meanwhile, in December 2023, the TPI went up by 1.3 percent compared to the previous year, while the CPI experienced a 3.3 percent year-over-year rise.

Gas prices on the rise across Georgia: What that means for summer travelers

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Many South Georgians say the increasing price of gas may affect their summer travel plans. According to AAA, the average cost of gas in Georgia is $3.41 a gallon. WALB spoke with South Georgia drivers about their plans as prices increase.

WALB spoke with several travelers and they say that they don’t travel as much or take vacations because of the influx of gas prices.

“I feel like everybody needs gas. So whether or not the gas prices are high or not, you still will need gas to go back and forth to work, back and forth to take your kids to school, and back and forth to pick up your kids, so it really doesn’t matter how high the prices are. You are going to pay for it anyway,” said Shabrika Strawder, an Albany visitor.

“Actually, I haven’t been vacationing or traveling outside of Albany. On an hour-long drive, I’ll be spending most of my paycheck,” said Logan Willis, an Albany resident.

One driver in Albany says he is always looking for ways to save despite the price differences around town.

“I always look for the cheapest price if I’m in the area. But I will not drive extensively to save a couple of pennies per gallon,” said LB Burton, an Albany resident.

A AAA expert says it’s not uncommon to see gas prices pick up during major holiday weekends, but prices will likely not surpass $3.40 a gallon.

“We can probably expect to see a low in gas prices between now and Memorial Day travel. After spring break is done, it seems to level off, and then we can see an uptick in Memorial Day as we go through the summer travel period,” said Garrett Townsend, a AAA representative.

But many are wondering how much the price increases have to do with war in the Middle East.

“I’ve noticed that gas prices are rising, and especially when things started blowing up in the Middle East, that’s when we saw a more significant increase,” said Jeannie Fowler, a store manager at CITGO.

AAA experts say drivers can expect to see a flat rate of $3.40 a gallon for regular gas through the holidays, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

MPs have voted in favour of the government's Renters' Reform Bill - despite it including an indefinite delay to the end of no-fault evictions.

A debate on the legislation ran throughout Wednesday afternoon, including around a new clause from the government which would hold off outlawing Section 21s until a review of the courts system had taken place.

But despite outrage from charities, campaigners and opposition parties around the measure, it got the backing of the majority of MPs - and the bill passed its final stage in the Commons shortly after 6.30pm.

A Section 21 notice is the legal mechanism allowing landlords to evict tenants without providing a reason, which creates uncertainty for those who rent their homes.

The government first promised to ban the notices five years ago, back when Theresa May was still in Number 10.

But it has faced numerous delays amid threats of rebellion from Tory backbenchers - some of them landlords - who said they feared ending Section 21s would see the courts overwhelmed with more complex eviction cases.

Ministers agreed to amend the bill to ensure no ban was enacted until a probe into the courts had been held.

But the clause offers no timeline - leaving no clear date for when Section 21s will actually be scrapped.
