70+ World Travel Themed Home Decor Ideas
Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Given my very obvious travel addiction, I thought it would make sense for a lot of the home decor in my new apartment to be travel themed. I can’t make EVERYTHING travel themed (my boyfriend would kick me out before we even moved in), but let’s just say people won’t have to guess what I had in mind when decorating our new place. So, if you are moving into a new place, or just looking to do some redecorating, check out these world travel themed home decor ideas!

Travel Inspired Living Room Decorations
Travel throw pillows.
Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!
Stacked Travel Chests
I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.
Suitcase Shelves
I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!
Travel Coasters
If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.
World Map Tissue Box Cover
I don’t think too many people use tissue box covers anymore, but I thought it was one of the more unique travel decor ideas. If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece!
Traditional Globes
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of travel decor? A globe of course! You can’t decorate your new place with a travel theme and not have at least one globe around.
Travel Themed Dining Room Decor
Travel placemats.
Like I mentioned above, once you get that nice, new table, you don’t want it to be ruined from moisture from cold drinks or hot plates. Placemats are an easy and common fix to that problem. If you’re going to be buying placemats anyway, might as well make them travel themed, right?
World Map Table Runner
If dinner placemats aren’t enough, why not complete the look with a matching table runner?
World Travel Bedroom Decor
Travel lamp.
Looking for something cool and unique to show off to all of your friends? Then you have to check out this floating globe lamp! It uses magnets to make the globe levitate and it even spins around like a traditional globe! It has LEDs built into the frame to make it light up and look even cooler! Of course, you can always go with the more traditional travel home decor too…
World Map Bed Comforter
Do you dream of traveling the world? I thought so! Why not go to sleep surrounded by a map of all the places you dream of visiting?
Travel Pillow Cases
Of course, you can’t have a world map bed comforter and not have matching pillow cases. You just can’t do it.
Travel Themed Bathroom Decor
Travel inspired shower curtains.
Since most showers require some sort of shower curtain (unless you don’t mind lots of water getting all over the floor), having a travel themed shower curtain is an easy way to add a touch of travel to your home life. It’s simple, and separate from the rest of the rooms in the house (in case you don’t want your guests overwhelmed by travel decor the moment they walk into your new place).
World Map Towels
If you are looking to make the entire bathroom travel themed (instead of just having a touch of it), you can also get bath towels that are travel themed. It’s especially nice if you have a rack where you can sort of hang them on display when not in use.
Travel Inspired Kitchen Items
Travel themed alcohol items.
Even if you’re not into the “travel decor” thing, you can still add a bit of travel to your home life. You can break out these glasses when you’ve brought home some souvenir drinks from your most recent destination.
World Map Plates
If you don’t have a big dinning room table, or aren’t really the type of person to use placemats and a table runner, you can still add a bit of travel decor to meal time with these cool looking plates!
Travel Inspired Napkins
My mom always gives me a hard time because I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my jeans instead of using a napkin (especially when eating greasy or salty foods), but if I had these napkins, I might be a little more inclined to use them (hint-hint mom: these would make a good moving gift).
World Map Cutting Board
Cutting boards are another one of those more subtle items that don’t necessarily get put on display. Since most traditional cutting boards are typically pretty bland, you can spice yours up by getting a travel decorated one.
Travel Themed Office Decor
Push pin cork globe.
My boyfriend and I are to turning our second bedroom into an office since both of us have computer desks. It’s the perfect place to put a tiny globe like this one. Plus, it’s exciting being able to put a new pin in it every time we go someplace new.
Globe Book Ends
I LOVE books. Unfortunately I don’t have as much time to read as I used to (which I think is a shame given how much I really loved it), but I’m really proud of my bookshelves and all the books that sit on them. Plus, I’ve always loved the feel of sitting in a library (especially those rustic ones you see in movies). I figured why not combine some of my biggest passions and add a little travel decor to my bookshelves?
Book Box Covers
If you’ve never heard of book boxes, don’t feel guilty. I hadn’t heard of them either until I started shopping for home decor! Book boxes are great for those book lovers (like me) that want their books to remain in mint condition. You can put your favorite books in book boxes to protect them from dust and moisture. Plus you can give your bookshelves more of a universal look (like the rustic library I mentioned above).
Pencil Holder
Because no desk would be complete without a pencil or pen holder.
Travel Wall Decor
Decorative world maps.
This is what usually comes to mind when you think of travel decor (and usually some of the first results when looking online). You can always go with the traditional, school-like world map, but there are some really cool looking world maps out there if you’re looking for something a little more unique.
Scratch Off World Maps
In more recent years, scratch off world maps have become more popular. They’re a great way to showcase all of the different places you’ve been! My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!
Wall Clocks
This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.
Word Art and Hangings
You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.
Other Travel Decorating Ideas
World map welcome mat.
What better way to welcome guests than to welcome them to your adventures? No better way to set the travel theme than to have it be the first thing you see!
Light Switch Covers
I don’t know if I would replace every light switch cover in my new place with a travel inspired one, but I thought it was a unique way to incorporate travel into home decor. At this point though, the rest of the place is already travel themed, might as well make the light switches travel themed too.
Outlet Covers
If you’ve got travel themes lights switch covers, it only makes sense that you have travel inspired outlet covers too. If you have one, you just have to have the other!
And that’s it for my long list of travel themed home decor! What did you think? Will you be including any of these items the next time you decide to do some redecorating? Let me know in the comments below!

Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers
I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.
These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.
Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.
The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses.
One of the things I love most about shopping for items on Etsy is that most artists can do personalized or custom items. Many of these items on this list are truly unique and many of them can be personalized for you.
We strove to include travel home decor pieces from around the world and items came from a number of places in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. However, the majority are from artists in the United States and United Kingdom.
If you are looking for a gift for your favorite traveler, but don’t find it here, consider checking out our guide to gifts for travelers . It contains 75 gift suggestions that should suit any budget or type of traveler!
We are happy to answer any questions you may have about any of these items included. We hope that this list helps inspire you to show your wanderlust in decorating your own home!

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes

Travel Themed Wall Decor & Wall Art
One of the easiest and most impactful ways of incorporating your love for travel into your home decor is with travel themed wall decor. These can be hung in just about any room of your house and might be map pin boards, artwork, wall decals, or your own travel photos.
There are lots of options to choose from online, but here are a few that really caught out eye!
Travel Map Pin Board
A world map pin board is a great way to both show your love of travel and display the places you have traveled and want to travel. The maps are made from printed canvas that is stretched over a cork backing and attached to a wooden frame. The pin boards come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes. You can personalize the title and legends of each map if you wish.
We have had one of these (in the vintage rustic style) on our own walls for years and we love it. The pin board comes professionally packaged and easy to hang on your wall as all the fixtures are included. Each map also comes with a set of two colors of pins.
The pin boards are available in world map designs as well as USA maps, Europe maps, and individual USA state maps. They also make decals, ornaments, and other travel inspired items. All products are made in Ohio, USA. See more at Ross’s store Conquest Maps .
Custom Map Wall Art Prints
We love the wide variety of travel-related prints that Robert has available in his store. Each wall art print is printed on high-quality matte paper. There are a number of designs available including world map prints, crossword travel map prints, travel list prints, longitude and latitude coordinates, and travel quote maps.
If you don’t see what you want, contact Robert to see if a custom order is possible. See more at Robert’s store Eleven Corners .
Travel Themed Wall Decals
Each vintage travel stamp decal is made of high quality self-adhesive matte-finish vinyl. They are also available in a number of colors and sizes, and decals can be customized. They can be applied to many types of clean, flat (or lightly textured), and dry surfaces such as walls, doors, windows, mirrors, wood, and plexiglass.
We applied these to our bedroom wall in our last bedroom, and enjoyed seeing them every morning when we woke up. We applied these carefully and slowly following the included directions and had no problem. We were also able to remove them a few years later when we moved with no issue.
Adam and Kim have a number of other great travel-related wall decals as well! See more decals and other items at their shop Blue Design Co .
Personalized Framed Vacation Maps
Want to remember an epic vacation, road trip, service tour, marathon, or other event? At Passport Maps , you can have a personalized map of just about any vacation, location, or route. The design is personalized for each customer and can include text, map locations, routes, and personal travel photos. Designs are either printed on 51lb acid free paper or are digital ones you can print yourself.
A few years ago Scott designed a map of a train trip we took from Istanbul, Turkey to Pisa, Italy and we loved how much Scott was able to incorporate our specific route locations, text, and several of our travel photos into the design. A great way to remember our trip every time we glance at our wall!
The frame is not included but you can add framing to your order or frame it on your own. See lots of personalized map examples at Scott’s store PassportMaps and in his Etsy shop .
Scratch Off Travel Map
This is a great scratch off map and a fun way to show where you have traveled in the world. It can also help you decide on your next vacation destination. The map is printed on high quality paper then covered with a gold foil layer. It shows over 10,000 cities and places and the package also includes a dust cloth, push pins, and metal scraper. The map measures 34.6 inches X 23.6 inches (88 X 60 cm).
We have this map and it is very detailed for its size and it was easy to scratch off the gold foil level. Individual U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and regions of large countries can also be distinguished so you can scratch off certain areas rather than the entire country.
Robert has several scratch map options over in this store The Map Lab .
Push Pin Map with Frame
This framed push pin map comes with a 2 inche wooden frame. The map was designed by National Geographic. You can choose from several colors for the frame to best match your room interior and you can also choose to personalize the text of the map legend. The map comes with 100 push pins.
This push pin map is made in the USA and comes ready to hang on the wall. Also maps available for specific countries or continents, and of different sizes. For more push pin maps, you can see options here on Amazon .

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

Hi Ruth, Yes, handmade travel products make for great souvenirs. If you don’t pick up something while traveling, you can always seem to find something online out there 😉 Best, Jessica

I’ve always wanted to travel the world as a kid my dream job was to be a doctor overseas. I’m a bit sad that I’ve never ventured outside of the United States. My favorite is definitely the book safe! I’ve always wanted a hollow book. My mandatory entry I hit too soon it was 17, 15, and 7. Hope I can still be entered.

This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

Simple home decor tips to add love for travel into your home
This month, as we celebrate World Tourism Day. It’s the perfect moment to delve into the world of travel inspirations and offer globe-trotters some delightful travel-themed home decor ideas. After all, who doesn’t want their living space to inspire their wanderlust?
Whether it’s a wall adorned with a tempting image of Spain’s mouth-watering paella, a cherished snapshot from a family vacation six years ago, or a world map design that allows us to mark off each new destination, we adore these personal travel mementos.
Let’s dive deep into this blog and explore ideas that will inspire you to book those long-planned vacations.
Travel Wall Decor: The World Map
Incorporating a world map into your home decor is a beautiful way to showcase your love for travel. Look at this elegant living room with white walls and a striking black textured world map design on one accent wall . Complete the look with a sectional sofa and a hexagonal coffee table in wooden laminate to create a comforting aura in your living room. Now, here’s the fun part. Get some sleek wooden floating shelves next to the TV unit. That’s where you can showcase all your travel souvenirs and quirky knick-knacks from your global adventures.
PS: You can have a personalised world map accent wall according to your preference.
Travel-Inspired Room Decor: Keeping It Authentic
Take a look at this vibrant bedroom design. Its travel-themed decor is adventurous and incredibly chic. You can choose travel quotes, a city skyline, your favourite destination, or a world map to accessorise with photos and to-do lists. The wooden platform bed and matching side table add an earthy touch to the room. And don’t forget to hang some travel-themed home decor accessories on the wall, such as a travel bag, to create a space that inspires you to wake up with a new goal each day.
Travel Wall Decor Favourite: A Photo Gallery
We love this one! One of the most stylish and thoughtful elements in interior design is the incorporation of photographs. Why not create a collage of these cherished memories on one of the walls in your space? Our favourite is the living room, which serves as a delightful icebreaker for guests, enabling them to get to know you better. Consider using trail lights and spotlights on the false ceiling to draw attention. Don’t forget to add a stylish touch to the space with a vibrant camelback sofa, an accent chair, and a stunning rug. We also recommend choosing lighter colours for the room so that the limelight remains on your memory wall.
Travel-Themed Decor Ideas for the Bathroom
One of the most enjoyable aspects of a vacation is the ambience, especially those impeccably designed bathrooms with candles, wooden accents, well-organised vanities, and a spa-like serenity. Ah, we all deserve a break! If this applies to you, consider a bathroom makeover. Notice this simple and inviting bathroom design , featuring warm earthy tones and a white cabinet to maintain a clutter-free space. The shower cubicle features wooden flooring to create a rustic charm, while a sleek glass partition adds a modern touch. With a few strategically placed plants and the sweet scent of a cedarwood candle, you’ll feel rejuvenated, as if you’ve escaped to a distant island, far from the daily hustle.
Travel Decor Ideas for the Patio
This one is for homes with outdoor spaces. To your advantage, why go so far when you can simply step outside the door and experience the vibe? If you enjoy picnics with your family, barbeque nights with friends, and throwing house parties, you need to transform that unused patio space. This covered patio, with a wooden ceiling , features a bar where you can enjoy chilled drinks. The rattan furniture and two tall chairs beside the bar counter provide additional seating options for your guests. Add tall plants and night lights to experience those tropical beach-side night vibes!
Travel Wall Decor to Embrace Your Love for Wildlife
Express your love for wildlife in a remarkable way! While souvenirs and pictures are great, there’s a more dramatic option: wildlife murals. These striking murals infuse your living space with adventure and instantly become the centrepiece of your travel-inspired decor. Complement this theme with a sturdy, coffee table using a wood slice, bringing a taste of the outdoors indoors. Incorporating more natural materials such as stone, wood, and earthy colours will add depth and character to your space. Remember, the most exceptional homes embrace their true selves and passions, even if it means taking an unconventional path.
As you draw inspiration from your travels and experiences, remember that travel-inspired home decor extends far beyond wall decor. Your canvas for creativity includes patterned tiles, floral prints, teak wood furniture, and contemporary designs that can subtly or dramatically transform your living space. You can explore biophilic and bohemian designs for a peppy character. If you’re ready to bring your ideas to life, you can chat with one of our designers for a free consultation to refine your vision of your dream home. On World Tourism Day, may your home serve as a reminder of the beauty and adventures that the world has to offer.
With that, we hope you enjoyed reading this. Check out our other blogs here.

Variety isn’t just the spice of life, it’s the way to spice up your walls too. Break up a plain and drab wall, in a cost-effective way, just by adding wall décor or wall art that brings your personality to life. Take this piece of wall art for example: perfectly at home in a modern aesthetic, this piece of art features an abstract world map scene, in a blue and green color palette. Made in the USA, this rectangular piece is printed on canvas and should be hung horizontally.

World Map on Wood by Jamie Macdowell - Print
by The Twillery Co.®
Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars. 565 total votes
Well-worn and vintage-inspired, this artwork is a replica of a world map without country boundaries or labelling anywhere. Reproduced from an original work by Jamie MacDowell, the land masses come in blotchy gray, green, and blue tones that pop over the rest of the background. Horizontal lines and a distressed tone make it appear as if this piece was printed on wood planks, but the surface is actually artist-grade cotton canvas. Multiple size options are also available, so you can find the right one to suit your space.
- Quality wood bars: shrink-resistant wooden-bar frame with tension wedges that allow for tightening of the canvas from the reverse side.
- Dependent and fast: Produced by the largest US canvas art supplier.
Came quickly. Just as described. Came shipped well protected. I liked that it came with anchors and screws. The screw lays in a crevice in the wood. There are no metal hangers on the back. My room is dark so the pictures make it look slightly darker than it really is. Jessica. Point Pleasant Boro, NJ. 2019-03-01 17:00:52

For the globetrotter at heart, this mixed-media piece features the re-creation of a weathered world map for a vintage-inspired feel. All of the continents are labeled and come in a distressed blue hue that contrasts with the rest of the surface, which is a brown tone that resembles worn parchment. Over the oceans are the faded illustrations of ships, while a compass is positioned in the Indian Ocean. Latitude and longitude lines complete the design for a classic look. This graphic art piece is printed on a flat surface and arrives ready to hang.

This item fits perfectly in my travel inspired living room. I ordered the largest size and it is just the right size in relation to my 84 inch couch. It has a rustic, “old world” feel to it but still blends well with my colorful carpet. It comes with a couple of nails to hang the photo but I bought some saw tooth hangers and picture hooks instead. Very pleased with my purchase.. Lashonda. Elkins Park, PA. 2018-07-07 10:32:12

Travel Themed Decor – 10 Design Styles From Around the World
The coronavirus pandemic obviously impacted our ability to pack our bags and go and explore different parts of the world. But, as we have slowly come out the other side, Britons are once again doing what they love to do best and boarding planes, trains, and automobiles to visit more places.
Indeed, UK residents took an estimated 71.8 million trips abroad in 2022 , 375 percent more than the year previous as travel restrictions began to lift.
Travel Themed Decor
Traveling is good for the soul. It can reduce the impact of stress and anxiety, provide a much-needed break from the daily grind of working life, broaden our horizons, and introduce us to new foods.
Travel decor is an interior design style that draws inspiration from different cultures and places around the world. This interior design style is all about bringing the essence of travel into your home, creating a space that reflects your wanderlust and love for exploration.
Travel themed decor can be achieved in a variety of ways, including incorporating elements such as souvenirs, artwork, textiles, and furniture that are inspired by different regions of the world.
You could display a Moroccan rug, an Indian tapestry, or a Japanese screen to create a travel-inspired vibe in your home.
Interior Design
Going on trips, whether a short jaunt, longer-term exploration, or maybe even on a honeymoon provides some of the most precious memories we will ever experience. For instance, staying in places like Sonesta hotels near Morrisville can offer unique decor insights that can be replicated in our homes.
So, it stands to reason that we would want some sort of reminder of our soul-soothing travels. For some, that might be putting up photos of the trip or displaying souvenirs bought from exploration.
But increasingly, traveling to new countries around the world is proving a great influence on the interior design styles of our homes.
Doing so not only provides a beautiful representation of the places you might have visited but using those memories and influences can be a great way to enrich your space and offer a sanctuary away from the stresses of modern life.
Designs From Around the World
For the more seasoned travelers, design inspirations might come more naturally. For those with limited travel experience or about to embark on new adventures maybe you’re not as sure of what to look out for to inspire you.
If you are going on tours of Europe , look out for design elements and perhaps even pieces that you could bring back with you. Below are 10 Travel Themed Decor Styles that you may come across and want to incorporate into your own home.
1. Scandinavian
Scandinavian design is a minimalist design movement that originated in the Nordic countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. It is known for its simplicity, functionality, and timeless appeal.
Some key characteristics of Scandinavian design include:
- Clean lines: clean, simple lines that emphasize function and utility are key to this design style. There are no unnecessary embellishments or details, and the focus is on creating a streamlined, uncluttered look.
- Natural materials: Scandinavian design often incorporates natural materials like wood, leather, and wool. These materials provide warmth and texture to the space and help to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
- Light color palette: whites, greys, and muted tones are predominant in Scandinavian design. This helps to create a bright and airy feel in the space and also allows other design elements to stand out.
- Minimalism: Scandinavian design embraces a minimalist aesthetic, with a focus on functionality and simplicity. This means that everything in the space should serve a purpose, and there should be no excess or unnecessary items.
- Functional furniture: functional and practical, furniture is designed to be both aesthetically pleasing and useful. This often means that it is often multifunctional, with storage solutions built in.
- Hygge: Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is a Danish concept that refers to a feeling of coziness, comfort, and contentment. Scandinavian design often incorporates elements of hygge, with soft textiles, warm lighting, and cozy seating areas that invite relaxation and comfort.
Look for authentic Scandinavian souvenirs, such as handcrafted wooden bowls, ceramic vases, or woolen blankets.
These pieces will not only add a touch of Nordic design to your home but also serve as a reminder of your travels and can contribute towards your travel inspired decor.
Japandi is an interior design style that takes the best elements of Japanese and Scandinavian styles , offering a calming and relaxing aesthetic. Furniture is placed low to the ground and uncluttered with muted colors, while lighting fixtures also follow the idea of minimalism.
Japandi design also incorporates elements of wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity. This means that materials and objects with a natural, handmade, or rustic quality are favored over mass-produced or perfect items.
Japandi decor is usually uplifted with plants to add some greenery and embrace the theme of nature. This can include potted plants, small Bonsai trees, or even a small zen garden.
Overall, Japandi design is characterized by a harmonious blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements, with an emphasis on simplicity, natural materials, and functional design. It is a design style that promotes a sense of calm, tranquillity, and authenticity, and can create a beautiful and serene living space.
Japandi interior design styles can often be found in hotel foyers and restaurant design, so incorporating this style into your home can easily create travel themed decor.
3. Bohemian
While still taking on influences of nature, Bohemian interior design styles are more eccentric at heart, with a love of vibrancy from colors, patterns, and textured layers meshed together with unique furniture.
Bohemian design is a free-spirited style that incorporates elements of different cultures and eras to create a unique and eclectic look. It is characterized by a sense of individuality, creativity, and a relaxed, carefree attitude.
To me, it is the perfect travel inspired decor style as it encourages you to display and integrate all the souvenirs and items you have picked up from traveling, each telling its own story.
Decorative items are what bring this design to life, with wall hangings, handcrafted artwork, and woven rugs. You can use this design in the home and create a boho look in your garden .
To bring this style to life, simply –
- Layer textures such as wool, silk, cotton, and linen to create a tactile look.
- Use bold and vibrant colors, such as jewel, earthy, and bright hues together.
- Mix patterns such as floral, paisley, and tribal prints to create a dynamic and eclectic look.
- Bohemian design often incorporates vintage and antique pieces, such as distressed furniture or vintage textiles. These pieces add a sense of history and character to the space.
- Incorporate natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants, to create a sense of earthiness and connection to nature.
- Bohemian design incorporates elements from different cultures and countries, such as Moroccan lamps, Indian textiles, or African masks, to create a worldly and eclectic look.
- Display your artwork on a gallery wall . This could include artwork you’ve picked up on your travels or pictures of your favorite destinations from around the world.
The beauty of a bohemian interior design style is that it really allows you to embrace your individuality and creativity and can easily inspire you to create travel inspired decor.
We lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years and I would say Arabian home design is not too dissimilar from bohemian design.
Arabian home design is a way to bring a more regal, luxurious, and elegant look to your home by embracing bold colors and textures, and materials such as velvet settees, wood tables, and glass decor to bring sitting rooms and bedrooms to life.
Mosaic patterns are a regular theme on rugs, curtains, and wallpapers in Arabian interiors. These patterns tend to include stars, squares, hexagons, or repeating shapes.
Ornate details such as intricate carvings, mosaics, and calligraphy often feature arabesque motifs, which are complex patterns of intertwined foliage and tendrils.
Lighting is an important element in Arabian design, with a focus on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This can include the use of lamps, lanterns, and candles to create a soft, diffused light.
The warm lighting is perfect with the rich and warm color palette they prefer, including shades of red, purple, gold, blue, and green.
Taking inspiration again from nature, African interior is about using natural shapes, textures, and finishes. An exotic interior design style that uses rich, warm colors such as burgundy, burnt orange, and deep brown earth, in contrast to soft beige, cream, or white painted walls.
African design is a diverse style that draws inspiration from the many different cultures and regions of the African continent. It is characterized by a rich and vibrant aesthetic that celebrates African art, culture, and heritage.
African design often incorporates natural materials, such as wood, stone, and clay, to create a sense of earthiness and connection to the natural world. These materials are often used in decorative elements, such as masks and sculptures.
It also draws inspiration from the many different tribal cultures of the continent. This can include incorporating traditional clothing and jewelry, as well as patterns and motifs inspired by tribal art.
Elements, such as woven baskets, pottery, and carvings are key interior design styles on the African continent. These pieces add a sense of authenticity and connection to the cultural heritage of the region.
Animal motifs also play a huge part in African design with zebras, giraffes, and elephant prints often used in decor to celebrate the rich wildlife of the continent.
6. Art Deco
1920s French art and design are the inspiration behind this design, which looks to use sleek, metallic finishes such as chrome, glass, and stainless steel.
Furniture tends to use jagged, pointed edges, and decorative pieces are typically larger with generous-sized chairs, dresses and couches all hallmarks of the 1920s.
The key characteristics of Art Deco interior design styles include:
- Geometric shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and circles
- Black, gold, silver, and deep jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue
- Sleek lines, curves, and symmetry
- Marble, chrome, and lacquer to create a sense of glamour and opulence
- Decorative motifs such as zigzags, sunbursts, and chevrons
- Machine-inspired elements (such as airplanes and automobiles) in furniture and decor
- Exotic influences including Egyptian motifs, tribal patterns, and Japanese lacquerware
7. Beach-themed decor
For the beach dwellers among you, beach-themed decor or coastal boho decor is probably more your vibe as it uses a light and airy feel to take you back to a time when you were laid on the sand with the noise of crashing waves to relax you.
Sky blue, beige, and crisp white colors are used to give that coastal feel, while weathered wood and sea glass are common in beach decor. Coastal-themed decor can include seashells, starfish, sand, and tropical plants which can all be incorporated in subtle ways such as artwork, throw pillows, or table centerpieces.
Beach-themed decor often incorporates outdoor living spaces, such as decks, patios, or balconies, to take advantage of the beautiful coastal views and ocean breezes.
If you don’t have a sea view, create your own beach vibe with casual furnishings such as overstuffed sofas, cozy armchairs, and hanging chairs. Don’t forget to add nautical accents such as navy blue and white stripes, rope accents, and sailboat decor.
8. Mexican Decor
Mexican interior design styles are vibrant and colorful styles that are influenced by the country’s rich cultural heritage and history. It is characterized by bold patterns, bright colors, and intricate details.
Vibrant colors, such as reds, yellows, blues, and greens are often used in combination to create a lively and energetic atmosphere. And don’t forget the cacti!
Mexican design incorporates folk art elements, such as papel picado (cut paper banners) and alebrijes (colorful hand-carved animal figures), to celebrate the country’s vibrant artistic traditions.
It is also known for its intricate tile work, often used in decorative elements such as backsplashes, countertops, and flooring. These tiles feature bold colors and patterns, adding a sense of drama and excitement to the space.
9. Moroccan Design
Moroccan design is not too dissimilar to Mexico with its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and ornate details. Spain had a lot of influence over Moroccan architecture and this architectural style, referred to as ‘colonial style’, was brought to Mexico by the Spanish.
Both Mexico and Morrocco embraced Spanish architecture and mixed it with their own indigenous styles, hence the reason there are similarities between Moroccan and Mexican design.
Moroccan interior design styles feature a rich and vibrant color palette, with colors such as blues, greens, and oranges often used in combination with reds, yellows, and golds. These colors are often bold and dramatic, creating a sense of energy and vibrancy in the space.
However, Morocco still holds on to its Arabian heritage and features a lot of ornate details, such as carvings, mosaics, and metalwork.
It is probably most famous for its booming textile industry with bold colors and intricate patterns taking center stage and traditional techniques, such as weaving and embroidery still used to create rugs, pillows, throws, and tapestries.
10. Australian Design
Australian interior design styles are influenced by the country’s unique geography, diverse culture, and natural beauty. It is characterized by a relaxed and informal aesthetic that emphasizes a connection to the outdoors. It is more than just beach themed decor!
The key to Australian design is indoor/outdoor living. It has a relaxed and informal feel, with an emphasis on comfort and livability. This can be seen in the use of comfortable furnishings, such as overstuffed sofas and armchairs, and the incorporation of casual decorative elements, such as woven baskets and pottery.
Large windows, balconies, and verandas play a key role in Australian design. They allow for a seamless flow between the interior and exterior of the home.
Interiors often feature a neutral color palette, with shades of beige, white, and grey being popular. These colors reflect the country’s natural landscape and allow the focus to be on the textures and materials used in the space.
Finally, Australian design celebrates the country’s rich art and cultural traditions, often incorporating Aboriginal art and motifs, as well as contemporary Australian artists and designers. If you’re looking for travel themed decor in your home that incorporates indoor/outdoor living, Australian design is just the thing!
How to Incorporate Different Designs Into Your Own Interior
Remember, there is no one right way to decorate your home using travel as your inspiration, nor does your whole interior need to be inspired by the same country or region.
Give it an authentic feel, it can be easy to fall into the pitfalls of your designs and furniture feeling tacky and cheesy. Nor should you overdo it, use the design as inspiration, not something that will throw it in the face of visitors.
Create your own personal style. Don’t get bogged down by thinking a particular piece of art or furniture doesn’t fit an overall theme, after all this is YOUR design so be yourself.
Incorporating travel-themed decor in your home can be a wonderful way to bring the world into your living space and create a unique and personalized atmosphere. By drawing inspiration from different design styles from around the world, you can create a space that reflects your own interests and experiences, and that tells a story about your life and the places you have been.

How To Create A World Travel Theme For Your Bedroom
If you’re the type that likes to travel then you probably want your home to reflect this passion. So how can you do that? Well, you could create a travel theme. It’s easier to do this when the room you’re focusing on is the living area or your office. In the case of the bedroom things get a little complicated as you have to be careful to maintain a relaxing and soothing mood while incorporating all the other elements in the décor as well. Maybe these tips can help.
Use cushions.
Cushions are always great accent features so you could use them in your favor this time as well. Try to find some world-travel related cushions such as the one with the Union Jack flag design or the ones with the maps. There are also cushions featuring images of the world landmarks and images that you can use.
Have a wooden trunk.
Wooden trunks are always charming. They make wonderful décor pieces and they’re also functional as they serve as storage spaces for all sorts of things. In the bedroom, you could have a wooden trunk placed at the end of your bed and use it to store blankets, extra pillows, etc. You can have the trunk decorated with stamps and other things that might be related to world-travel.
Decorate with maps.
When you think of a world-travel theme, the first thing that probably comes in mind is a map. Maps are perfect décor element in this case. You can choose a map of your favorite place, the one you dream of going to or of a place you’ve already visited. You can also have a world map with all the places you’ve visited highlighted.
Framed wall art.
Another way in which you can add an exotic touch to your bedroom is by framing images of places around the world and displaying them on the walls. You could also frame vacation pictures that you’ve taken in your travels. Another nice idea would be to use images of major landmarks that you wish to visited or have already visited.
Display postcards.
Even though postcards are not popular these days, these make beautiful memorabilia when you’re traveling. So go buy some postcards or, if you have some from your travels, that’s even better. Frame them and display them on the wall, either above your bed, above the desk or anywhere else you think they would look good. The en-suite bathroom could also use some decorations.
Pictures and accessories.
If you have items you brought with you from your travels, such as decorations, accessories and other knick knacks, then you should use them to decorate your bedroom. If you don’t have any or would like to add some more, you can just buy them from a local store. It’s the symbolism that matters in this case.

Russia: Moscow By Shelby Rodeffer, Joel Anderson, 2012
Did you know that Russia is the largest country in the world, yet about 73 percent of the country’s population lives in urban centers? In many ways, that makes Russia an ideal travel destination, because visitors can experience the incredible, expansive rural regions of Russia; but at the same time, visitors can also experience huge Russian cities that are teaming with historical districts, art museums, authentic markets, restaurants, etc. Inspired by the iconic Muscovite architecture of Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Anderson Design Group handcrafted a travel poster of the cathedral in the vintage illustration styles of the early-20th century, WPA-commissioned works. Available as an art print, canvas banner, framed print, framed postcard, or as a set of notecards, this artwork would make a great take-home gift or home decor item. This Hotel in Istanbul Was Just Voted the Best in the World — Here's What It's Like to Stay
From gorgeous decor to an ideal location, and an unmatched history, this hotel has it all.
Any hotel can host you in a destination, but an extraordinary one will immerse you in the local culture right from the jump. The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, voted the best hotel in the world by our readers in this year’s World’s Best Awards , sits firmly in the latter.
“This recognition is an incredible honor for our team in Sultanahmet and across Four Seasons, further solidifying our position as luxury hospitality leaders. This exceptional property reflects our enduring commitment to personalized service and exemplary quality – all grounded in the genuine heart of our people,” Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told Travel & Leisure about winning the remarkable accolade.
Right from its curbside entrance at Tevkifhane Street, the hotel is indeed a special one. Upon exiting my cab on a warm fall day, I got to experience this particular brand of magic for myself, determined to make the most of my short weekend getaway to Istanbul — and luckily for me and all the hotel guests, the towering neoclassical yellow building sits just a short walk from some of Istanbul’s most famous sites. But we’ll get into that in a minute because the building deserves to be this story's star.
The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet
- The beds here are unlike any we’ve ever experienced.
- Süreyya Teras Lounge has unmatched city views — among the best in the city.
- The spa’s hammam experience will leave your skin feeling like a baby’s bottom.
This particular building hasn’t always been a destination people want to check into. Built in 1918, it began as a guest house only to be quickly transformed into the Ottoman Empire's first jailhouse, a convenient destination next to the local courthouse. Even the street names give away its history — Tevkifhane translates to “detainee,” while the street around the corner from the front door, where prisoners were released, is named Kutlugün, meaning “happy day.”
Political prisoners were often housed here, including novelist Orhan Kemal, who wrote Ward 72 while imprisoned. The jail eventually closed in 1969; however, following the 1980 coup, it was reopened for a short time as a military jail before falling into disrepair until 1996, when the Four Seasons took over. But the brand has made sure not to forget the building and the area’s extraordinary past.
“The property itself is a marvel, and the thoughtful enhancements of its century-old Turkish neoclassical architecture have ushered in its next chapter, creating new opportunities for our guests to discover Istanbul from our very special hotel at the heart of the city’s Old Town,” Reynal said. “From Sultanahmet and beyond, our teams will continue to shine bright by building lasting connections with our guests and bringing the very best travel experiences to life.”
Not only did the Four Seasons brand work meticulously to preserve elements of the building in the mid-'90s, it did so again in 2022, when it emerged from a two-year renovation project, pulling in even more of Turkey’s gorgeous style into every room.
“Our designers researched styling, pattern, and details from antiques, fabrics, and architecture and distilled these influences through a contemporary filter to create designs that feel completely in tune with the building and setting,” Martin Goddard of the design studio Goddard Littlefair, shared in a statement following the unveiling.
Indeed, every inch of this space feels not only aligned with its surroundings but a part of them. Despite being next door to some of the most visited sites in the nation, it still provides guests with all the peace, quiet, and privacy they’d want.
Upon check-in, I was whisked directly to my premiere room. Though the hotel’s smallest room category, it still clocked in at 645 square feet, larger than most New York City apartments. Everything about it felt plush — from the entry couch to the upholstered chairs around a small dining table for any in-room meals, the Turkish Kilim textiles hanging on the walls, and, of course, the overstuffed bed that sat like a cloud, ready to envelop weary travelers. However, I wasted no time lying down, instead doing what all guests at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet should do: swing open the windows.
My room happened to open up to the dazzling and verdant courtyard below, sectioned off with intentional style to include garden space, lounge, and dining spaces, which can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner thanks to the Avlu Restaurant — think Anatolian mezze plates; erişte pasta made with chives, spiced walnut, sautéed asparagus; and lamb tander smothered in a gorgeous tomato sauce with sheep cheese, oregano, chili flakes, sumac, and yogurt. Though the food here is undoubtedly fabulous, do make sure to head a few floors up for sunset.
Resting atop the hotel sits Süreyya, its rooftop bar that comes with the bonus of the breathtaking Hagia Sofia Grand Mosque as the backdrop, making it the perfect place to transition from day to night with a craft cocktail in hand, like its Sultan Martini, made with vodka, passion fruit, yuzu juice, and vanilla syrup. Those feeling peckish while looking at the view can order small plates, salads, sandwiches, a sweet treat, or a cheese and honey plate stacked with Anatolian cheeses.
However, there was one destination in the hotel that I couldn’t experience — but you now can. That is the Kurna Spa, offering traditional Turkish hammam rituals on its massive slate gray marble stones surrounded by colorful blue and soft green Turkish tiles, alongside a full menu of massages and facials.
Though I didn’t get to see the spa during my stay, I could still explore so much more thanks to the hotel’s privileged position steps from the Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, about a 15-minute walk away. There, I filled my bags with jewels, sweet-smelling spices, and tiny trinkets to remember my trip by. I also purchased two large rugs from a local supplier. Unsure of how I’d get them back to the hotel, the merchant asked where I was staying, and I couldn't even get the hotel's full name out before he said they’d be delivered to my room within an hour. And true to his word, they were there upon my return, speaking to how stellar this hotel’s relationships are within the area.
The hotel, without question, deserves all the praise heaped upon it for the food and drink (worthy of a visit alone), the decor that roots you firmly in Istanbul, but most of all, because it is so utterly welcoming to all that walk through its door, setting a standard for hospitality that few can match. And the view most certainly doesn’t hurt either.
The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet offers 65 luxurious rooms across several categories, including deluxe, premiere, and superior rooms and eight suites. Every room includes a seating area, a dining table, and an over-the-top fluffy bed. Guests can maximize their stay by booking the Beyzade Suite, a bi-level suite offering sweeping views thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street below.
Food and Drink
The hotel offers guests plenty of choices when it comes to their meals. Guests can book a fine dining experience at Avlu, its outdoor restaurant located in the courtyard, or inside at its elevated Lingo Lingo Bar and Restaurant. Guests are also invited to sip cocktails at night on the roof at Süreyya Teras Lounge or grab a coffee and a pastry in the morning at its on-site cafe, La Pistache.
Activities and Amenities
The concierge at the hotel will happily help guests deep dive into local culture by setting them up with one of the hotel’s unique experiences. This includes activities like an exclusive Bosphorus cruise, time with a Turkish coffee fortune teller, and a Wonders of Istanbul local tour.
At the hotel, guests can book treatments at Kurna Spa, including traditional Turkish hammam treatments that will leave them feeling fully renewed.
Family-Friendly Offerings
The hotel offers guests babysitting services, as well as baby and child amenities like cribs and rollaway beds, to ensure everyone has a fun and comfortable stay.
Sustainability
The hotel takes part in various Four Seasons sustainability efforts, as well as site-specific efforts like its water reduction program through water-efficient landscaping, and irrigation control, waste reduction via the elimination of single-use plastic food and beverage containers and bathroom amenities, and by offering local, sustainable food and beverages and seasonal menus. The hotel also celebrates sustainability through its local tours to heritage sites and by displaying local artists throughout the hotel to bolster the Istanbul community.
There’s no need to rent a car when staying at The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet. It’s within walking distance to several major attractions, including the Hagia Sophia Basilica, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar. There are plenty of taxis available as well.
How to Get the Best Value
A good way to get a little value out of your stay is by booking the hotel’s bed & breakfast rate, which includes the daily buffet breakfast in AVLU restaurant or an American breakfast through in-room dining for up to two guests.

David Moscow travels the world to discover deliciousness From Scratch
By cristine struble | feb 29, 2020.
Have you wondered why some meals just taste better? David Moscow goes on a food adventure in the new show From Scratch and uncovers the secret to delicious food.
Sometimes the most memorable meals have a story behind them. David Moscow discovers the stories behind the food can and do create the most delicious dish. In the new television series, From Scratch , this culinary adventure can encourage foodies to explore the beauty of making food from scratch.
While the home kitchen holds a bounty of deliciousness, sometimes convenience overtakes cooking from scratch. When a cook takes the time to use quality ingredients, appreciate the craftsmanship and uncover the passion behind the ingredients, that meal can become more than just sustenance. It can become a gift.
In the new FYI series , From Scratch , David Moscow goes on a culinary journey. As he travels the world, David seeks to recreate a chef’s recipe. But, this show is more than just cooking. David explores the stories behind each of those ingredients. Through this culinary adventure, people see that food is intertwined with a country’s history and culture.
Many people might know David Moscow from his feature film debut in Big . Over the years he has numerous film, television and stage credits. Additionally he co-developed and co-produced the first stage production of In the Heights and has produced several films. In this new FYI show, he puts himself into the food world.
In the first ten episodes of From Scratch , David dives into a culinary world that many foodies would dream to discover. Even though more people are appreciating farm to table cuisine, David takes that approach to the source. From milking a cow to make butter to foraging for the perfect ingredient for a dish, the show proves that ingredients bring the story of food to the table.
Recently, David Moscow graciously answered some questions about his new show, From Scratch . While some people may not have the opportunity to go on this extraordinary culinary adventure, the lessons learned from his experience can be brought to any home cook’s table.
Cristine Struble: Many Americans are focused on convenient food (or delivery, grab & go), how can your show get people to discover the deeper connection that food can bring a person?
David Moscow: While sourcing ingredients is definitely hard and hard to find time for in our demanding days/schedules, it also can be quite fun and sometimes even exciting. These thrills are present all across the season. But they also sit right up alongside the simple pleasures of wandering in the woods looking for mushrooms or fishing on a river under a midnight sun. The hope is that our show will shake that love of nature and the joy that come with work particularly when it ends in a pizza pie.
CS: There is a growing movement to know your farmer or know where food comes from – do you think that people are understanding that where food comes from impacts the how food tastes?
DM: There are a couple oppositional things happening at once. At the same time that a few people are able to take the time and money to know where our food is coming from, the majority are becoming even more removed through delivery apps and the growth of fast food. Thoughtless eating has never been such a problem. BUT we are only a generation or two away from a healthy interaction with the food we eat. And I do think that all people still pine for making fresh food and eating it with friends around – something that is innately part of being human.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by fyi, tv (@fyi)
CS: As you traveled the world, did you find that food traditions are stronger in some countries?
DM: I found that there was a direct relationship with free time, a social safety net and strong food traditions. Places like Iceland, Sardinia and Finland have little fast food and place great importance in the people who harvest and source the meals they eat. Some of the other places are fighting to keep their traditions alive in the face of the cheap fast food everywhere in modern life.
CS: While many people think that global cuisines are very different, there are often some underlying similarities. What similarities surprised you the most?
DM: When building the episodes for the show, we found that there aren’t that many major ingredients across the planet. A huge chunk of what we eat are grass, seeds, fish and few other animals. And we eat these things with the help of fire or fermentation. Cooking meat on a grill and making alcohol out of fermenting food is everywhere.
CS: This show seems to encourage people to better understand the food and culture connection. What’s one easy way to start that type of food conversation on the typical family home?
DM: I think apple picking (or any kind of fruit picking) as a family outing is an amazing starting point. It gets you out in the fresh air and gets your blood flowing – and I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like a crisp apple pulled from a tree. During the shoot I sat my son down in a strawberry patch to graze before he could walk. The act of picking and eating with his own hands has had a lasting effect. Strawberry was one of his first words and still to today is his favorite fruit to eat.
CS: You travel the world in this series. Which location was your favorite? Which meal was your favorite?
DM: Each one of the places I went was a spot I had dreamed of going and each has a special place in my heart. How can I compare going on a safari in South Africa vs taking a boat off the Amalfi coast. I would say the same with the food. I had the best pizza on the planet and the best tacos. I had incredible Icelandic seafood and Finnish lake fish. They each stand alone.
If you would like to follow along with David Moscow’s culinary adventure, From Scratch airs on FYI and can be streamed online. New episodes air on Sundays at 6 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. CT.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Danish firefighters toiled Wednesday to extinguish the last pockets of a fire that gutted Copenhagen’s 400-year-old stock exchange building the previous day, as owners of the structure looked ahead to rebuilding the iconic landmark.
Tuesday’s blaze, which destroyed half of the building and toppled its dragon-tail spire, was believed to have started on the roof during renovations, but the cause remained unclear and police had yet to enter the burned part of the building to investigate.
No injuries were reported despite a hectic scramble in the first hour of the fire to remove valuables, with citizen volunteers helping officials and firefighters in an effort that managed to salvage much of the building’s priceless artwork.
“This is sad, so sad,” 44-year-old civil servant Mikkel Jensen said Wednesday as he looked up at twisted scaffolding still clinging to the ruins of the Old Stock Exchange.
The building, which dates from 1615 and is named the Boersen in Danish, is known for its green copper roof and distinctive 56-meter (184-foot) spire in the shape of four intertwined dragon tails.
Morten Langager, manager of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, which was headquartered in the Old Stock Exchange and owned the building, said it should “rise again.” His boss, chamber head Brian Mikkelsen, said the building will be rebuilt “no matter what” and that the board backed the idea.
The building was undergoing extensive renovations, and there are detailed records of the entire structure’s architecture, including photographs taken just last week of the dragon spire by the National Museum in Copenhagen.
However, no decision has yet been made about who will reconstruct the building, a project which would cost millions, if not billions of kroner (dollars). A cautious estimate said it could take up to 10 years.
Many in Denmark compared Tuesday’s fire to the April 2019 blaze at Notre Dame that destroyed the spire of the 800-year-old cathedral. Its restoration is slated for completion this year.
The extent of the damage, caused by flames and the tons of water poured to extinguish them, was still unknown.
“A lot has disappeared in the fire,” said Tim Ole Simonsen of the Greater Copenhagen Fire Department, which was working to secure remaining outer walls. Up to 40 shipping containers, filled with concrete, will be put around them to stabilize them, the fire department said.
That work will continue through the night. “The work is extensive and requires a large amount of equipment,” the fire department said in a statement.
Police hadn’t yet been able to enter the burned part of the building to begin investigating the cause of the fire, said Brian Belling, a Copenhagen police officer in charge of the investigation.
“It can take a long time to find the cause of a fire,” Belling said.
When the fire engulfed the building on Tuesday, passers-by, Chamber of Commerce staff, police officers and members of an army unit that had been sent to help raced inside the building to save its treasures.
Mikkelsen, who was one of the employees who ran in, told public broadcaster DR that the building had made a plan for what to save in a “worst case” scenario. When it became too dangerous for people to go up to the first floor, firefighters with breathing gear were sent in to retrieve priceless items, he said, adding that many of the building’s most valuable contents, which included irreplaceable paintings and other works of art, had been saved.
Among items saved was the huge 1895 painting “From Copenhagen Stock Exchange” by Danish artist P.S. Krøyer, the Chamber of Commerce said.
About an hour after the first reports of the fire on Tuesday, the blaze engulfed the spire and sent it crashing onto the building, which was shrouded by scaffolding, and onto the street behind.
The fire sent huge billows of smoke over downtown Copenhagen, and many government offices located nearby remained closed Wednesday because of a strong smell of smoke in the buildings. Employees were told to work from home.
The buildings must be cleaned and their ventilation checked before government ministry staff can return, said Rasmus Brandt Lassen, head of the Danish Building and Property Agency.
“We have told them that they should expect to work at home for the rest of the week,” Brandt Lassen said.
The exchange is considered a leading example of the Dutch Renaissance style in Denmark. The Chamber of Commerce moved into the building after Copenhagen’s stock exchange left in 1974.
Its dragon spire was one of the many of topping the city’s churches and castles, which have earned Copenhagen its nickname as “the city of spires.” Other copper-covered belfries include the serpentine spire of Our Savior’s Church, those of the Renaissance Rosenborg Castle downtown, and the tower of the Christiansborg Palace which houses the Danish parliament.
A main road running past the Old Stock Exchange remained closed Wednesday.
