Asda shoppers shocked to see traveller encampment on Sandwell car park

Shoppers in Great Barr were shocked to see a travellers' encampment on the car park of Asda, Queslett.

travellers asda car park

The caravans had previously been parked outside the old Buffet Island, on Queslett Road, which has been bought by McDonald's.

Oscott Councillor Darius Sandhu assured residents the council and police were working on the situation.

He said: "We are aware that travellers have arrived at the car park at the Asda off Queslett road - it seems that they have moved from Buffett Island. We will be working with the council and all relevant authorities to get this sorted ASAP.

"As soon as we have an update we will let residents know."

Great Barr resident Steven Stephens has been tracking the travellers all week.

He said: "First they pitched up at Buffet Island, they filled the car park and I expected them to be there for weeks. However, they must have been kicked off there and went to the next car park they could find, which is Asda, Queslett.

"The thing is they were better off at Buffet Island because no-one would see them but at Asda every shopper is going to have to get around them."

Asda shopper Sharon Kemp told the Express & Star: "You never know what you are going to see on Asda car park these days, either kids doing donuts in their cars or having parties, so seeing a load of travellers was no surprise.

"They will probably get sick of the noise soon and leave."

Asda has been approached for a comment.

Travellers set up caravans on Westbrook ASDA car park

AN encampment of travellers has been reported in Westbrook.

Several caravans were seen pitching up on the ASDA car park in Westbrook, which is also home to Westbrook Library and St Philip's church.

Six caravans were reported as making up the unauthorised encampment, which is believed to have arrived on Wednesday.

At present, there is no record of the encampment on Cheshire West and Chester County Council's website - making it unknown whether officers will be sent to the site to disperse the encampment.

There have been a number of unauthorised sites established in Warrington in recent weeks.

This has prompted members of the public to question Warrington Borough Council over the location of the long-promised traveller transit site.

Funding to the tune of £2million was set aside as long ago as 2015 to assess the viability of creating a transit site in Warrington for the use of the traveller community.

As it stands, no such site has been created.

When asked by the Warrington Guardian for an update on the progress of finding a traveller transit site, a spokesperson for Warrington Borough Council said: "We remain committed to the delivery of a suitable transit site within the town and recognise the benefits for both the travelling community and our residents.

“We are continuing to work with our partners to identify a suitable traveller transit site in the borough.

"The need for this is fully established in the submitted proposed local plan that was subject to examination in public in September [2022]."

Traveller caravans have set up camp at an Asda supermarket car park - sparking fury from shoppers.

The convoy descended on the overflow car park at the Barnes Hill supermarket in Weoley Castle on Thursday night.

Police were at the site on Friday morning and were liaising with both Asda officials and the travellers.

A spokesman for Asda said they were working with both police and Birmingham City Council to get the travellers removed.

The supermarket was fully open today.

But one shopper, who asked not to be named, said: “The police have just arrived and are talking to the travellers. There is an Asda official in a high visibility jacket who is also liaising with police.

“There are between 20 and 30 caravans on the overflow car park.

“The loss of the car park could pose problems for shoppers and Asda if the supermarket gets busy over the weekend.”

An Asda spokesman said, “We are currently assisting the local authorities. The store is open and trading as normal.”

Mark Croxford, Head of Environmental Health at Birmingham City Council, said: “When private landowners contact the council about unauthorised encampments our officers give advice on common law powers to assist the landowner in recovering their land.”

Travellers recently descended on Kings Heath Park and Moor Green Lane in Moseley. Bailiffs for Birmingham County Council were forced to issue enforcement notices at the start of the month.

Around 30 caravans also descended on Hodge Hill Common on the May Bank Holiday Monday.

Those not wanting to drive are encouraged to pre-book private hire taxis with a designated drop-off and collection point for taxi operators (excluding Uber) running at Deepdale Stadium.

A shuttle bus, operated by Big Green Coach, is offering a day-return coach service from Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Burnley, Chorley, Clitheroe, Lancaster, Leyland, Liverpool, Lytham, Manchester, Morecambe, Southport and Wigan to the Radio 2 site and back. Details of the day return coaches and prices are on the Big Green Coach website .

They are also running a city centre shuttle bus from the Radio 2 site to Preston Bus Station for £10 return per person. The buses will run from 10am to 2pm and then from 8.30pm to 11.30pm for the return leg.

All shuttle buses arrive around the side of Deepdale Stadium, by the Minerva Health Centre, and it is a short walk to Moor Park from there.

All local bus services, such as the 19 and the 6 which serve Deepdale Road and the 40 which serves Garstang Road are expected to run as usual and have stops near the festival site.

Avanti West Coast are putting a ‘full travel plan’ in place from Preston Railway Station.

Endless loss of car parking feels like a nail in coffin of Derby city centre

I suspect that those people who would have once travelled to Derby to park in the Riverside car park - or one of the others that have disappeared - now merely get in their cars and head for the nearest town or city that is more welcoming to the motorist

The Chapel Street car park in Derby city centre

We have more newsletters

By the time the Assembly Rooms car park closes on September 30, the city will have lost at least 1,500 car parking spaces. This takes into account the loss of the Riverside car park in April 2023, the NCP St Peter's Quarter car park in Colyear Street in 2022 and a number of other smaller car parks which have been swallowed up in the Becketwell area development.

Importantly, the loss of some of these spaces has led to the removal of 24-hour parking and disabled parking in the areas where people actually need them to be. When the Riverside car park closed last year, removing 830 spaces, 24/7 parking and valuable centrally-located disabled spaces, local businesses and hotels bewailed the loss of the round-the-clock parking.

Instead, people were told to use the next nearest multi-storey car park - ironically, the Assembly Rooms - but hey presto, that too is about to disappear, taking away another 212 spaces, which have been well-placed to serve the Cathedral Quarter until now.

It's strange that although we have lost the car parking spaces in the city, there isn't a feeling that we are desperately short of them overall but rather that they are not in the right places. So I suspect that those people who would have once travelled to Derby to park in the Riverside car park - or one of the others that have disappeared - now merely get in their cars and head for the nearest town or city that is more welcoming to the motorist. Or they simply drive to the booming retail parks that are allowed to proliferate and compete with city centres.

Join us on WhatsApp to get the latest news straight to your phone

Councillor Alan Graves, of the Reform Derby group on the city council, probably came some way close to hitting the nail on the head when he remarked recently about the closure of Riverside: "There is a war on motorists, not just from this government, but from the previous government as well.

The Assembly Rooms car park offers two hours of parking for £3.20

"Part of that is shutting down car parking facilities, making it harder to find somewhere to park. Next it looks like the Assembly Rooms car park is being demolished despite no plan for that . No wonder Derby attracts poor ratings when there is no direction from decision-makers."

When the Riverside car park was closed, it was stated that it was "under-used" and in need of "significant investment" and Derbion cited that it had another 2,700 spaces in three car parks in and around the city's main shopping centre off Traffic Street.

Not everyone wants to park or shop at Derbion, and as a city, we shouldn't want them to, if we are to ensure that the whole city thrives. Empty shops in the Cathedral and St Peter's quarters will not be filled without guaranteed footfall.

Surely, we should be encouraging people to park and visit other areas of the city by offering more convenient car parks. With the closure of the Assembly Rooms car park, people will be pointed in the direction of the Chapel Street car park, with 524 spaces, but which has already been threatened with demolition in the no-too-distant future as the city council seeks to develop what is called the Northern Quarter of the city, around the top-end of Queen Street, Chapel Street and Cathedral Road.

It is also a good step away for many people who simply won't bother. Many won't want to walk all the way to Chapel Street if they wish to shop in St Peter's Street, the Cornmarket or the Market Place. There are several surface car parks in and around Sowter Road, Phoenix Street and Darwin Place but the elderly and disabled, and even those who are a bit younger, are not going to be encouraged to come to Derby to visit and shop if they cannot easily access its facilities.

Pictured is the Riverside car park at Derbion. It is one of three car parks where shoppers will be able to park all-day for £1 during the Black Friday weekend.

Within a few months, the new Becketwell performance venue should be opening its doors to a potential audience of 3,500 people. Where are they going to park with just 315 parking spaces available at the nearby Bold Lane car park - arguably the best car park in the city for safety and ease of parking?

And by then, the handy Assembly Rooms car park will be closed - and possibly under the jackhammer - as the city's refurbished Market Hall is also due to reopen next year after several years closed.

There was originally a plan to build a car park in Becketwell but when Government funding was not forthcoming, the idea faded away. Plans for the Market Place currently on the drawing board, following the demolition of the Assembly Rooms, include a hotel and an office block but no car park.

Planners and politicians are busy trying to push a climate agenda and are missing the point that people are not going to give up their cars anytime soon and that many have already changed over to electric cars as part of the environmental lesson that is being advocated and feel they have done their bit - and they will still want a good, clean, handy and not-too-expensive car park.

A recent city council regeneration scrutiny meeting did little to allay fears about Derby car parking when the issue of parking for the performance venue was raised. In response, senior regeneration bosses said the authority was working on delivering "a wider car parking strategy for the city".

The venue is certainly taking shape as most of the glass curtain wall has now been completed

Tammy Whitaker, director of city growth and vibrancy at Derby City Council, told councillors that parking in the city centre was being looked at strongly. She said: “There is a provision of car parking in the city centre and there is work to do to understand what the movement is around the city centre and what the best places are for car parking, in order to serve all the facilities coming to Derby.

“At the moment the strategy is to ensure people have parking in the right places and people can move around the city effectively. It is something we are thinking about as a strategic piece for the city centre.”

It's music to my ears to have parking in the right places for people. But with the clock ticking, as Councillor Matthew Holmes observed, and the closure of car parks becoming a regular occurrence, it is time to make sure that Derby city centre does not become an economic wilderness because people stop coming here in their cars.

A group of 'good Samaritan' shoppers have been praised after fending off masked thugs attempting to steal a woman's car in an Asda car park.

The shameless gang targeted a lone woman who was getting into her car after grabbing groceries from an Asda superstore in Great Barr, Birmingham just after 7pm on Monday, August 19.

The two masked men threatened her with a weapon 'in front of everyone' in a brutal attempt to get her keys, before an onlooker tried to stop the carjacking.

The brave man flung himself at the thugs who assaulted him before they fled the scene in the woman's car.

A video of the terrifying incident was shared by an anonymous poster in Facebook community group 'B44 Neighbourhood Alerts'.

A woman could be heard in the background of the clip shouting 'smile' as she ran alongside the stolen car and filmed the masked man inside.

The anonymous poster wrote: 'Please be on high alert - attempted car robbery at ASDA Queslett car park in front of everyone. Attacked the female owner for her keys.

'Luckily I ran at them when I heard her screaming and caught these before he got scared off by us and ran out the car back to his mate on a bike further up the car park.

'They were carrying screwdrivers [and] swung at a man and knocked him down first though. Absolute thugs.'

Locals were quick to praise the 'good Samaritans' in the comment section below the post.

One person wrote: 'Wow - so brave'.

Another said: 'Big up to those that helped. Nowhere safe - sad.'

West Midlands Police said it was investigating the incident.

A force spokesperson said: 'We're investigating following an attempted carjacking off Old Horns Crescent, Great Barr, just after 7pm on August 19.

'A woman was threatened with a weapon after being confronted by two masked men. A man who went to assist her was assaulted and sustained facial injuries. The would-be thieves then made off.

Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)

Still commonly known by its post-war name of Lomonosov, the estate at Oranienbaum is the oldest of the Imperial Palaces around St. Petersburg, and also the only one not to be captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War. Founded by Prince Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest adviser, the Grand Palace is one of the most opulent examples of Petrine architecture to have survived to the present, although until very recently the palace itself has been greatly neglected. After Menshikov's death, Oranienbaum passed to the state, and was used as a hospice until, in 1743, it was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III. Peter made Oranienbaum his official summer residence and transformed one corner of the park, ordering the construction of a "Joke" Castle and a small citadel manned by his Holstein guards. This peculiar ensemble, called Petershtadt, was mostly demolished during Pavel's reign. Antonio Rinaldi, the Italian-born architect who also designed the Grand Palace at Gatchina and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Peter in 1758 to build a modest stone palace next to the fortress, and this has survived.

After Peter was deposed, Rinaldi was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the Chinese Palace, in the Upper Park, as her official country residence. However, Catherine spent little time at Oranienbaum, which she had grown to hate during her marriage to Peter, and by the end of the 18 th century the estate had been turned into a Naval Cadet College. The palace became an Imperial residence again in the reign of Alexander I, and retained that status until the Revolution, when it was immediately opened as a museum. Although never captured by the Germans, Oranienbaum was bombarded during the war and, while the Grand Menshikov Palace survived intact, its restoration was given much lower priority than the more famous estates at Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. Today, the small but elegant park has been almost completely restored, while the full restoration of the palaces has finally gained momentum over the last decade.

I did a 500-mile road trip in an electric car and found the secret to a (nearly) perfect break

Camping in the UK during a tempestuous summer , while attempting a 4-day, 500+ mile round trip in an electric car . What could go wrong?

Having done a 258-mile trip to the beautiful Lake District before in an EV I’m not oblivious to the potential issues of travelling long distances in a car that needs a recharge every couple of hundred miles – but at least this time I was more prepared for potential pitfalls.

Since my last leccy adventure, I had gone to a female-friendly EV workshop and received the best bit of advice I think I ever have in my life: throw out the idea that your holiday only starts once you’ve got to your destination. Instead, consider the moment you’ve managed to cram in that last pack of snacks and pressed the start button the true beginning of your break.

Let’s face it – you simply can’t do a 250 mile trip in one hit and you can’t just pump in £50 of petrol in a few minutes and be off again – so why fight it?

I still had this advice ringing in my ears when I was offered the chance to take VW’s fancy leccy family vehicle (don’t you dare call it a camper van, btw) the ID. Buzz for a few days away, and was looking forward to see just how it all works in reality.

My itinerary

Ilfracombe harbour in Devon, England with boats on the water and house atop a grassy hill

A big fan of the South West, my husband, James, and youngest son, Jake, 14, planned a trip to the seaside town of Ilfracombe in North Devon .

At 258 miles away from our home, it was clear we would have to stop en route – but where?

After a bit of research we decided on Bristol – more specifically The Wave, a man-made surf pool and school with accommodation, 153 miles away. There we would treat ourselves to a night in a safari tent and a surf lesson the next day. This was going to be pit-stop holidaying at its best.

Next we would take a couple of hours to make the 107 mile trip down to Ilfracombe, where we’d stay two nights in the Little Meadow Campsite, which had an electric hook up that we could use for overnight charging.

A map of the road trip from Essex to Ilfracombe and back via Bath

We would also be staying local, so in theory wouldn’t need much extra juice in the ID. Buzz, but little stops here and there would still make a dent, so it would be interesting to see just how much.

Our final stop would be on our way home. Usually we would cane it back to Essex up the M5/ M4/ M25, with maybe a quick stop at a service station – but this time we opted to cover 127 miles and then stop in Bath for a bite to eat, before making the final 148 mile trip home.

A bridge in the city of Bath

Sounds breezy right?

Expectation vs reality

As mentioned, preparation was key and thanks to the OVO chargepoint app, we planned every stop to the tee. There would be no ‘let’s just see if there’s a charger at the next service station’.

The app, which you synch up with your card details, has locations of all its charging points across the UK – so was brilliant in helping us plan. Of course, this does mean you have to do a lot of homework, which turned out to be essential because when we did try and go off-plan on day one, it went a bit wrong.

Although we knew we could get to The Wave in one hit, en route we realised that we would need to stop for food as we’d left a little later than expected.

So using the app we located a charge point in Boxford, about 60 miles away from Bristol. However, when we got there… it wasn’t there! We drove around a few times to see if we could spot it, but nada. Nothing.

Car screen showing 'charge immediately'

It was a bit of a wobble and made me wonder how accurate the rest of the map was – but then further investigation revealed that it would have been a very slow charge, so we decided to utilise the filter to only include speedy charge points and headed off to find another one, just outside a pub and Co-op in nearby Newbury, which means we were still able to grab some lunch while it charged.

I’ve also since learned that OVO are constantly updating their app to remove unusable charge points, so was just one of those bad luck things. I wish I could say there were more problems with the EV and charge points, because I know that the anti-EV mob would love it, but I can’t.

The VW ID Buzz electric vehicle being driven down a road

Our main takeaway was that two years on from our lovely trip to The Lakes, the infrastructure seems to have got a lot better. In fact, with nearly 35,000 charging locations now across the UK, it’s a figure that has almost doubled public devices since last year alone.

If I could suggest anything to the EV gods it would be that motorway signs are more clear about whether they provide charge points and which brands, as if you do need to make an unplanned stop it’s easy.

But overall – and maybe this is thanks to our amazing little ID. Buzz or the beautiful scenery that surrounded us – it was a memory-making road trip all three of us really enjoyed, and all the more so because we’d added in some extra stops which we wouldn’t have done otherwise.

With its dash of lime green and oh-so-familiar design, the VW ID. Buzz is is seriously eye catching.

Close-up of the bumper of the VW ID Buzz electric vehicle

Although inspired by the classic VW Transporter, thanks to its 21st century makeover, it’s way more than being just super-cute though, as we discovered on our break.

Although we had our accommodation sorted for the first night, we had to also pack our family tent and everything else you need for a 2-night camping trip (including the kitchen sink washing up bowl!). Plus, your usual luggage for a three-night family trip away.

We were pleased that thanks to space saving hacks, there was plenty of room for everything. Not only did we have a four-man inflatable tent, but we had chairs, windbreaker, camping table, gazebo… you name it. But everything fitted in nicely and neatly and the Buzz’s sliding doors made it so easy to get in and out of and to also get our stuff out.

Pictures show a full boot and Claie's son in the car

However, the best bit was that you could fold down the back seat to make a really roomy place to sleep – which Jake happily did for our two nights at the campsite, while James and I took the tent.

Of course, there was the EV element – with a fully charged battery, the ID. Buzz’s range is up to 257 miles, while the maximum charging power for fast charging (DC) is up to 170 kW – meaning that it could potentially takes around 30 minutes to charge the battery from 5% to 80% .

And, it was a dream to drive thanks to all the gizmos, including driver assisted lane changes and stopping. I’m not going to lie, it was very hard giving this car back. I think my husband even might have shed a tear.

Our trip in numbers

Stop 1 – Bristol

Total miles: 153 miles, total leccy cost: approx £13.70

Opened in 2019, The Wave has two artificial wave pools which are perfect for a spot of surfing, whether you’re an absolute beginner or seasoned-pro. Surf lessons start at £60 for kids aged 4-9, but there are lots of deals available, If you have your own surf gear bring it, as the wetsuit my son was given was a little threadbare and meant he suffered a couple of scrapes on the concrete floor of the pools – although that didn’t stop his fun!

A blurry shot of someone surfing seen from the water

Accommodation wise – there’s a selection of safari-style glamping tents, which are kitted out with comfortable beds, a kitchenette, woodburners, private toilet and a large balcony. For food there’s the Clubhouse, which serves food and drink (for an example of prices, the delicious Wiltshire ham, eggs and chips cost £13.50 and a very generous mallow-covered hot cholocate was £3.50) as well as having a cool little surf shop next door.

It’s a great place to stop for a day or two if you are a surf-lovers, as there’s also the city nearby to explore during the day, while at night you’ll be grateful for the opportunity to chill on your deck and take in the peaceful surroundings, especially thanks to the 10pm noise curfew.

Stop 2 – Ilfracombe

Total miles from stop 1: 107 miles, total leccy cost: approx £9.63

Once in Ilfracombe, we stayed at the beautiful Little Meadow Campsite , where pitches are generous, staff super-friendly and the hillside views are just incredible. Our pitch came with electricity, which was perfect if you’re travelling wth an EV.

James and Claie standing by a tent and their electric vehicle

A picturesque seaside resort, in the heart of Ilfracombe is the harbour, which is home to the iconic Verity, a stainless steel and bronze statue created by Damien Hirst in 2012.

Just across from Verity is the S & P Fish Shop , an assuming place where you can get the most amazing, freshly caught seafood to takeaway or eat in while watching boats in the harbour.

The Verity statue on Ilfracombe harbour in Devon, England

The cafe offers seafood platters, salads and sandwiches (inlcuding chocolate spread for the picky-eaters).

We tried the lobster sandwich, which came with the thickest slicest of soft white bread. At £15.95 it’s not a cheap lunchtime sandwich choice – but it absolutely delivers.

While there are a beaches scattered across the Ilfracombe coastline, secluded pebbly coves to the wide stretches of golden sand, we came across a great little find called The Tunnels Beaches .

Tunnels Beach of Ilfracombe, Devon

Steeped in history, these four tunnels were hand-carved in the 1820s and lead to sheltered beaches, rock pools and a tidal Ictorian bathing pool. Not your usual golden sand, the beach is covered in black stone – so bring a blanket or towel to sit on – which just adds to its rugged beauty. With a teashop and toilets on site – and thankfully not swarming with visitors – it was a great find, and a bargain one at that with tickets costing just £3.75 for aduls, £3 for kids – and under-three are free.

Close by is also the buzzing beach town of Woolacombe and takes just under 30 minutes to get to from the campsite. Although more of a tourist trap, there’s plenty of places to eat and play – or just chill out on the beautiful 2-mile beach and enjoy the waves. Although, it does understandably get busy in the summer months.

Stop 3 – Bath

Total miles from stop 2: 98 miles, total leccy cost: approx £8.80

This was just a quick lunch stop for us as we charged the car up in a nearby Morrisons car park, but we found time to talk a half hour walk around the streets and soak of the history of this Roman town. Our main focus was to find somewhere great to eat while the Buzz juiced up – and we did.

Front of Pizza Bike eatery in Bath

Called The Pizza Bike , since 2016 it sits at the back of The Bell Inn , a historic free house owned by around 600 of its customers. On a sunny day it was the perfect place to stop. A margarita starts at £10, while The Bell (which has a little bit of everything) costs £14. Portions and pizza size are generous, making these delicious pies worth every penny. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Bath.

Homeward bound

Total miles from stop 3: 145 miles, total leccy cost: £13.05

Our final leg of the journey was a simple cane it down the motorway as we knew we had the juice to do it. But what could have been a really boring leg of the journey was made all the more fun being in a car that caught people’s eyes and even got a few waves along the way – especially when we were side by side with an old school Transporter.

Daily horoscope today: September 2, 2024 astrological predictions for your star sign

Once home, it was back to reality as we handed back the keys to the car my husband loves a little bit more than me – but we all agreed that the trip had been far more of a success than we thought it would be.

How OVO works

There are several apps you can download to make charging and planning your journey easier, but the one we used was OVO Charge , which helps saves time and hassle by locating charging points available for use before stopping so you can plan your route. It’s pretty easy to use, especially – as we learned – if you utilise the filters, such as rapid and ultra charging and connector types.

The app allows customers to charge their vehicle for 7p/kWh at home at any time of the day or night. OVO say that because the discounted charging rate allows customers to drive for just £190 per year, it is one of the UK’s most competitive charging rates.

They also work with the Volkswagon Group , meaning anyone with a VW have the bonus of accessing ‘Charge Anytime’ add-ons, including 10,000 free miles and anniversary bonuses.

A Paisley driver was left stunned when he noticed the hilariously strange note left on his car in a supermarket car park yesterday evening (Friday, August 30).

Zachary was going in for his weekly shop at Asda in the Linwood area of the town. As he got closer to his car the concerned shopper noticed a piece of paper on the windscreen.

Initially he thought someone had struck his car, but as Zachary read the note he was baffled.

"Hows it goin Clack?."

After reading the bizarre note, Zachary posted it on social media where it has racked up 260 reactions.

The driver told Glasgow Live: "At first I saw the note and thought oh great someone's either bumped me or something was wrong with my parking, which was perfect might I add, I double checked, but there was no bump.

"Just a random note. From reading the comments, I'm still not sure if it's an insult in some way or if it's an inside joke meant for someone."

People park on kids bay. Please look into this matter. Whenever I go to the city with my kids I never get a space on kids bay even though I can't see anyone of them have a car seat on the behind. They should be fined for this. I hope will ve sorted with the notice .....!!

Don't stay longer than 2hours you get 40 fine.i am disable too.wont go there again

So handy as long as you don't stay longer than 1 and a half hours - I like that you don't have to pay and get refunded much easier But be careful as your number plate is registered on entering

Awful parking, the bays are not big enough, there isn't enough disabled bays. As a person with limited mobility I struggle at times to walk, I needed assistance to get back and my car was blocked in so I couldn't get my walker in the car until the other people moved theirs out the way and consequently was over my two hours, and was fined. I presumed being a disabled person, I am entitled to a grace period. Apparently not. Be really careful if you suffer with mobility problems and might need extra time.

We went to shop both at George and Asda before our holiday, stayed a bit over than two hours, came home from holiday to a "lovely" letter from them. I had to pay £40. You are a disgrace! Never go there again, Asda lost my custom!

People parking in kids bays when don’t have children but they don’t get fined but stay over 2 hours u do a joke

Was shopping at Asda and George , long queues at the till so ended up staying just over 2 hrs and got fined £40 !!!! So angry

Got a fine for 40£ as went over 2 hours while shopping in the store. Parking eye just fleecing innocent customers

Disabled parking a joke can never park all full of people without a badge this needs to be checked more often

Don’t use it even when you do as they say, went over the two hours did as they said and still got fine £40

Man Asleep In Car In Travel Lane In Spring Valley, Wakes Up, Crashes Into Cars: Police

Aman who was allegedly asleep behind the wheel of his car on a roadway in the Hudson Valley woke up when police arrived, crashed into numerous vehicles, and attempted to flee, injuring several people.

A Yonkers man is in the hospital for evaluation after allegedly falling asleep on Route 59 and then waking up and crashing into numerous vehicles as he tried to flee.

The incident occurred in Rockland County in Spring Valley at 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

According to Spring Valley Police Det. Matt Galli, an officer en route to another call for service, found Westchester County resident Nelson Torres, age 54, of Yonkers, asleep at the wheel on Route 59.

Galli said the officer positioned his patrol car in front of the other vehicle to protect the driver and the public, called for additional officers, and then attempted to get into the car to render aid to the driver.

When officers could not rouse the driver or get into the car due to the locked doors, they attempted to break a window to gain entry, Gallie said.  At this point, Torres woke up, tried evading officers, and fled westbound on Route 59.

Gallie said Torres intentionally crashed his car into unoccupied and stopped police cars and multiple other occupied vehicles of people traveling on the roadway in his attempt to get away.

The vehicle then became disabled a few hundred yards down the road from all the accidents and was penned in by police cars; at this point, he was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.

Torres, two police officers, and several people from vehicles that were struck were taken to local hospitals with minor non-life-threatening injuries, Gallii said,

Torres was taken to Nyack Hospital for medical and psychological evaluation, where he remained as of Thursday, Aug. 29.

He was charged with:

  • Reckless endangerment
  • Unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle
  • Reckless driving
  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident
  • Driving while ability-impaired
  • Driving while ability impaired by drugs
  • Numerous vehicle and traffic offenses.
