Wolfe's comments from the Introduction to Storeys from the Old Hotel

"'Trip, Trap' was the first story I ever sold Damon Knight for his Orbit series; it marks the real beginning of my writing career."

The story is mostly made up of two intercut epistolary narratives, telling the same events from different points of view. Garth the son of Garth is a war chieftain leading a delegation to a remote tributary of his overlord, in what seems a fantasy-medieval setting. Dr Morton Finch is a field xenoarchaeologist investigating possible evidence of a previous (to Earth's) spacefaring technology, who puts himself under Garth's protection. Both tell how they learn of an ancient bridge with mysterious carvings: Garth, further, that it is defended by a troll. Both end up in the troll's lair: it is a telepathically powerful creature which believes itself a member of a powerful race that rules this world, and the natives (Garth etc) to be animals. Together they defeat the troll, and Finch learns that its inscriptions are indeed similar to those found on another distant planet.

  • It seems that the troll was indeed the remnant of an ancient starfaring race which occupied the planet before Garth's race achieved civilization. It may have been driven mad, or at least into delusion, by its long isolation.
  • The title refers to the fairy tale of the Three Billygoats Gruff , who seek to cross a bridge guarded by a troll: "Trip, trap" is the noise that the goats' hooves make on the bridge, which alerts the troll.
  • Dokerfins is a colloquial corruption of "Doctor Finch".

A note about the writing of the story

In Contemporary Authors Autobiography Series, Vol. 9 , Wolfe writes:

"I sent him [Knight] a rather experimental story in which a series of reports by an astronaut and a series of letters from a knight on the medieval planet he was exploring ran in parallel columns -- the left column being science fiction, the right fantasy. Knight liked the story but not its double-column format, and asked me to break it up into conventional skips from astronaut to alien and back to astronaut. "I retitled it 'Trip Trap,' idiotically retyped it with the astronaut's reports, complete, followed by the alien's letters, and returned it to Knight... "Knight returned 'Trip Trap' marked to show the points at which he felt the switches from one letter to the other should be made. I spent a couple of hours trying to improve on them and found I could not... I'm still questioned occasionally about that dedication; this is the event to which it refers."

The dedication mentioned is that to The Fifth Head of Cerberus : "To Damon Knight, who one well-remembered June evening in 1966 grew me from a bean."

Unresolved Questions

  • Where did the traki 's starfaring civilization go or what happened to them?
  • Did Finch kill the traki and then blame it on Garth in his communique to Beatty? Likewise, did Garth take credit for killing the traki in his communique to his Protector? Finch claims he lost consciousness, but, when Garth comes out of his trance, Finch is covered in blood, holding his sword, which is also covered in blood. Their respective stories that Garth killed the traki in the "spirit world" seems rather dubious given the blood on the sword.

The Trip Trap is a bar in Fabletown owned by Holly . It is frequently seen throughout Telltale Games ' The Wolf Among Us .

  • 1.1 Episode 1: Faith
  • 1.2 Episode 2: Smoke & Mirrors
  • 1.3 Episode 3: A Crooked Mile
  • 1.4 Episode 4: In Sheep's Clothing
  • 2 Book of Fables Entry

History [ ]

Episode 1: faith [ ].

The Trip Trap is first mentioned during Bigby's investigation into Faith 's death. It is brought up by either Toad or Tweedledee (depending on which location Bigby investigated first) as a likely refuge of the Woodsman . He and Snow take a cab to the bar, where they part ways, with Snow continuing the investigation elsewhere. Bigby enters to find Holly, the owner and bartender, and Grendel . Neither of them claim to know where Woody is, despite Bigby's persistent questioning. However, eventually they hear a noise in the bathroom, which turns out to be Woody. Bigby asks him about his involvement in Faith's death, but he claims that he had nothing to do with it. Grendel, at that point fed up with Bigby for what he perceived to be a lack of care for the less well-off Fables such as himself, then transforms into his true form and attacks the sheriff, initially gaining the upper hand. Bigby then also transforms and trounces Gren, going as far as to rip his arm off it the player chooses. The bar is significantly damaged during the fight, with the two Fables smashing into walls and tables. Afterward, Tweedledee enters asking for information about Faith. Bigby is given the option to arrest either him or the Woodsman. Whoever is chosen is then marched out of the bar and back to the Woodlands .

Episode 2: Smoke & Mirrors [ ]

After Bigby and Snow identify the body TJ found in the river as Holly's sister, Lily , they head to the Trip Trap to break the news to her. Upon arrival, they find Jack pestering Holly and Grendel. The two regulars are initially fearful of Bigby after the events of the previous night, but Bigby assures them he's not there to start anything. Jack tries to talk with Bigby, but is ignored. As he becomes more and more annoying, Bigby is given the choice to throw him out of the bar. Regardless, Bigby then informs Holly of Lily's fate, prompting Gren to go into an angry rant about how the Business Office never cared about them. Holly shatters a glass in frustration, then solemnly walks over to a chair and sits down. Snow presents her with Lily's broach, calming her down. Holly asks Gren to leave, and he begrudgingly does so, accompanied by Jack if he was allowed to stay. Holly explains that she didn't talk much with her sister, but knew that she was working as a prostitute at the Pudding & Pie . She asks for Lily's body, so she can conduct a proper troll funeral with it. Bigby can grant or deny this request, but Snow will override him if he says no and take Holly back to the Business Office to make preparations regardless.

Episode 3: A Crooked Mile [ ]

The Trip Trap is offered as one of the three locations Bigby can visit in order to discover the identity of Crane's witch, with Snow reasoning that Lily's personal items could contain a clue to her location or identity. It is visited regardless of the order Bigby chooses. Upon arriving, he hears Gren and the Woodsman arguing inside. After knocking or asking to be let in, a surprisingly happy Gren opens the door. If Woody was arrested earlier, he says that Snow let him go. He then reveals that both Gren and Holly are on pain medications, with Holly soundly asleep in a back room and Gren pleasantly high due to his resisting sleep. Gren begins to drink, against Woody's advisement, and starts talking about the funeral. He then proposes that the three of them have a toast, offering to help Bigby search for Lily's things afterwards. Bigby can accept or reject this proposition, but Gren and Woody drink regardless. Woody again advises Gren to get some rest, causing him to angrily lash out of annoyance at his constant nagging. The two begin brawling, and Bigby is given the option to separate them. Gren tells Bigby that he and Holly found out about Woody's sessions with Lily while going through her things, and that he should have known how angry that would make Holly. Woody defends himself, but soon has enough and walks out of the bar. Gren passes out due to the medication, leaving Bigby to search Holly's room alone. He finds a box of Lily's possessions under Holly's cot, and starts going through them. This awakens Holly, who groggily mistakes him for the Woodsman. He can play along or reveal himself as the sheriff, but continues searching through the box as the bartender questions him. He eventually finds an address book with Aunty Greenleaf in it, and calls Snow to inform of the good news. He then exits the bar.

Episode 4: In Sheep's Clothing [ ]

The Trip Trap is briefly seen after Bigby and the Woodsman defeat the Jersey Devil  and exit the  Lucky Pawn . It can be seen to the right of the shop while they're talking on the street.

Book of Fables Entry [ ]

The oldest bar in New York City, the Trip Trap was established in 1725 in secret by Starkad - the legendary Viking and reprobate - as a place for Fables to meet and drink and commiserate. Known then as the Grammarian's Tavern, he eventually lost it in a bet to a tribe of mountain trolls, who quickly renamed it and made it their own. Holly is the current proprietor, having inherited it from her mother when she died in a boating accident in the early 20th century.

  • The name of the bar is a reference to the classic fairytale " Three Billy Goats Gruff ," where the sound of the goats' hooves on the troll bridge is described as "Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip trap."

Prologue [ ]

1:50:00 PM A certain group of students seem to be transporting an apprehended criminal. The expressions these students have seem like this criminal is no joke, even claiming this will be the criminal's last moment to see the sunlight. However, the criminal remained silent. It seems this criminal is a person of interest according to them, and ensuring she gets transported is of top priority. As the students continued with their tasks, the criminal smiled brightly, and her eyes sparkled...

3:10, Bound for Gehenna [ ]

6:00:00 AM Inside a Justice Task Force club room, Ichika of the Justice Task Force was called by Hasumi . It's quite early in the morning, so Ichika was wondering if something's going on. Apparently, Hasumi talked it out with Tsurugi and agreed that Ichika was the best person to ask for the occasion. The occasion was more like an errand, but it's one that's so important it could affect not only the Tea Party , but Trinity as a whole. Ichika was tasked to bring a bag containing an important artifact, which was requested by the one and only Nagisa . The importance of this occasion was said to be at a level that "can influence the political stance of the Tea Party." Hearing how important this mission was, Ichika got nervous.

On a side note, Hasumi had a request of her own. During Ichika's mission, she will be boarding the same train with the Sensei of Schale , and it's of Hasumi's personal hope that Ichika spends her time comfortably inside the train with Sensei. Ichika seemed fine with this request since having someone to talk to would be nice. She had also been looking for some time to talk with Sensei in detail, so two birds with one stone.

Ichika and Sensei were helping out with the excavation team with the artifacts. It was found that the artifact Ichika was tasked to bring was a tea cup set used for the Tea Party's first ever meeting. Ichika was surprised they were able to find it, but Sensei was confused why it's such an important treasure. Ichika explained how the Tea Party were worried they weren't able to speak on an equal footing with other groups such as the Sisterhood and the Remedial Knights , and the tea cup set was the Tea Party's hope by saying they're "a historical entity" and such.

Anyways, Ichika mentioned how the other Justice Task Force members had made such high remarks about Sensei and how she wanted to work together with Sensei at least once. Seems like the latter came true. Well, it was time they started packing their stuff and board the train to Trinity. Checking the timetable, it seems it was time for them to leave. Something was amiss, but there's no time to worry.

Uhh, why is the train heading to Gehenna ? Both Ichika and Sensei rushed inside the train. Although they were tired, the worst had been avoided. Ichika tried to find what went wrong, but Sensei reassured her by saying problems like these were regular occurences in everyday life. It calmed Ichika down, but it didn't change the fact the train was heading to Gehenna. Not too long after, students from Gehenna who were inside the train noticed Ichika's presence and began questioning why a Trinity student was onboard a train to Gehenna, and a commotion soon began.

Soon after, a Highlander Railroad Academy train attendant appeared. The commotion was none of her business. Instead, she asked for Ichika and Sensei's tickets. Seeing them without tickets, she deemed the two as free-riders and called in other students to get rid of them. A battle was inevitable, and one with train attendants at that. The situation seemed to be heading to a bad direction as more students approached them. To avoid such a huge ruckus, Ichika suggested they just let themselves be detained. As they were about to surrender however, an explosion happened. Ichika and Sensei survived, but the students attempting to arrest them didn't. In the distance, a familiar voice was heard by Sensei.

It was Kasumi from the Hot Spring Development Department . The name seemed familiar to Ichika. After a bit of thinking, she finally remembered that Kasumi's Gehenna's wanted criminal. Somehow, Kasumi knew about the bag Ichika and Sensei were bringing. And since she needed to leave the train, she proposed the three of them work together to stop the train. Ichika tried to refuse, but it seemed she had no choice as Kasumi forced her to work together. Then, an announcement was made announcing part of the cargo exploded. The announcer requested all passengers to follow the train attendants' instructions for safety. The train's destination had also changed and would not stop till the last stop, "Gehenna Autonomous District 32-1." The announcer continued with a warning that prohibited all passengers from leaving their seat or security would be deployed.

Things were staring to get worrying, but Kasumi seemed to be pleased with the way things were turning out. Apparently, something else was going on. Kasumi mentioned that the last vehicle she was in was a "special convoy" made by the gangsters who captured her which was attached to the rear of the train. From here, Sensei realized the train members and the gangsters had joined hands. Kasumi added with their goal of "delivering the leader of the Hot Spring Development Department to the Gehenna branch of the gang." The situation worsened, and as more people surrounded them, Ichika and Sensei were forced to work together with Kasumi.

Overturning the Train [ ]

Kasumi was surprised seeing Sensei's strength, but Ichika was not happy with the chaos. Back to the mission, Kasumi's plan was to detonate a bomb to overturn the train. Hearing the plan, Sensei got scared from the dangerous idea, but Kasumi reassured nothing bad would happen as long as she's there. Ichika was getting more irritated despite not saying much, but Kasumi didn't mind it that much and proceeded with her usual self.

Meanwhile, in another train was Iori and other Prefect Team members who were monitoring the train Kasumi was in. The train was around 3km behind them, but its speed was drastically increasing. The Prefect Team students tried to increase their train's speed, but at this rate, the train might crash in 2 minutes. However, Iori told them to not get scared. She ordered their train to stop and the students to board on the other train as it passed.

Ichika was having a hard time dealing with the situation. As the group proceeded, Kasumi mentioned how she and Ichika were pretty similar. Ichika was in disbelief hearing that statement, but she really didn't want to think about anything else other than getting off the train. The gangsters and train attendants had something else in mind. Apparently, they prepared a cannon for riot control for occasions like these. Before they were able to use the cannon however, they were stopped by certain people.

Iori appeared, but she was shocked to see Sensei's presence. She was also surprised to see Ichika AND Kasumi next to them. Iori couldn't believe a Trinity student and a Gehenna student were working together with Sensei on the wrong side. As Iori tried to understand the situation, she failed to notice something. She didn't see the cannon inside the train, which then fired at her. As absurd as it was, the cannon was quite effective, but Iori was still standing.

Iori also claimed that Kasumi would be kept in a special prison. Hearing Iori, Kasumi remembered the prison Iori was referring to, which was in the Prefect Team's basement. She also remembered that today was the day Chairman Hina was in charge, and Kasumi began to panic. Kasumi tried to negotiate, but Iori refused. Kasumi then remembered about Ichika and decided to get her involved again. Kasumi then recited Iori's claim of detaining "all the delinquent students" onboard. After thinking about it, Iori and Sensei realized that all the passengers on board were delinquents, meaning Iori would have to arrest every single one of them. Although Iori was worried by the numbers, she persisted in standing with the side of justice. Kasumi, enjoying her time with the situation, pulled out the bag with the special tea cup set Ichika had before.

Express Train to Hell [ ]

As Kasumi boasted her leverage in the situation, Kasumi remained silent yet infuriated. Kasumi kept pushing Ichika's buttons, and soon, Ichika reached her limit. Out of nowhere, Ichika shot Iori and knocked her out in an instant. Kasumi, seeing Iori's defeated, bursted in laughter as she thought she had won. But soon after, Ichika shot Kasumi as well, causing the bag to fall and the tea cup set to break. Ichika noticed her mission to protect the set had failed, but at this point, Ichika seemed to have lost it.

As Ichika opened her eyes, she decimated everyone in the vicinity besides Sensei. As everyone was defeated, Ichika calmed down. She realized her mistake and wanted to take responsibility by apologizing to the Tea Party. However, Sensei wanted to apologize as well. Ichika didn't want to get Sensei into more trouble, but they insisted, acting as a way to comfort Ichika. Ichika knew she tried to suppress her destructive personality, but she couldn't hold it any longer and showed her bad side, even though she said it herself to show their good side today. She felt reassured by Sensei's words. She also told Sensei to keep this secret between them. As the situation calmed down, Ichika noticed something at where the train was heading. She noticed a bunch of explosives alongside some Hot Spring Development Department members. She didn't know why those explosives were there, but then it clicked. She remembered what Kasumi said before, and seeing her knocked out on the floor, all she could do was accept her fate.

Everyday Life [ ]

It was nighttime, and Ichika and Sensei had nothing else to show but shattered pieces of the tea cup set to Nagisa. Seeing the expressions on the two's faces, Nagisa told them the condition of the set didn't matter. Nagisa only wanted proof of its existence regardless of its conditions. Broken things can be repaired anyway. After that meeting, Ichika and Sensei were relieved the mission was over. It didn't go as planned, with Ichika even mentioning how she actually thought of quitting the Justice Task Force due to situations like these, but life is just like that sometimes. At the end of the day, Sensei got to spend time with Ichika. Originally, Ichika didn't want to be a burden to Sensei, but hearing their magic words and after everything, letting yourself loose once in a while wouldn't be so bad, especially when Sensei gave her the privilege. It felt like Ichika had officially became Sensei's student.

Meanwhile, Kasumi was being transported by the Prefect Team to a special prison in the Prefect Team's basement. Despite Kasumi's appearance, they were told to stay on guard. However, it seems like Kasumi has something else in mind...

Moral Lesson: You can't expect life to go the way you want it to. Though, as much as it is troubling, you can't keep all your anger to yourself. Sometimes, you just gotta let loose and have someone to talk to instead of leaving your feelings all bottled up. Otherwise, all that pent up anger might explode at the wrong time. Or maybe the right time. - Writer.

General strategy.

trip trap wiki

Before we start, challenge stage 3 is a mobbing stage without any bosses, so avoid bringing Single Target students. The main gimmick of this stage will reduce all striker student's cost generation to 0. Instead, SP is generated by destroying the vending machines found around the map (Image to the left) or by defeating enemies.

To clear this stage within the time limit, you have to properly time your EX Skill usage when enemies are still grouped up. This usually happens when they have just spawned.

trip trap wiki

Additionally, there are friendly NPC that spawn with you. They can help soak damage, allowing you to focus purely on damage. If you do not have enough damage, they can easily be KO'd. You will need to clear the stage quickly or bring your own tank.

Team Building

trip trap wiki

This stage is all about clearing mobs quickly you will want to have several AoE damage dealers in the team. Generally, you do not need a tank or healer, as there will be NPC students to help you tank attacks. If you are struggling to kill enemies quick enough feel free to bring a healer/tank.

Avoid Cost Supports since Striker students do not generate any SP. For extra team slots, you can consider having filler/auto attacks to help clear out mobs.
