TwoSet Violin Review: A Comedic, Innovative Intervention for Classical Music
On the evening of Sept. 26, crowds of people gathered in Symphony Hall in anticipation of the sold-out Boston leg of the TwoSet Violin World Tour 2023/24. TwoSet Violin — a hilarious Australian comedy duo comprised of two violinists — boasts an impressive following of over four million subscribers on YouTube . For many in attendance, this evening marked the culmination of years spent enjoying the online content of Eddy Chen and Brett Yang — the group’s members — as audience members had another opportunity to witness the duo perform live on their second global tour.
The show commenced with a special guest, Sophie Druml, gracing the stage with a piano performance of Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz.” While her rendition was exquisitely executed, the piece itself extended beyond ten minutes, toying with the audience’s attention span.
Nevertheless, this initial seriousness quickly gave way to the lighthearted charm of Chen and Yang. They kicked off their performance with a few playful jabs about the art of practicing their instrument before diving into a game of violin charades. In this interactive game, they skillfully imitated a variety of sounds using their violins, drawing uproarious laughter from the audience as they mimicked everything from birds chirping to Yang shedding tears of jealousy when watching a performance by a young violin prodigy.
TwoSet Violin’s ingenuity even extended to creating a unique musical piece from their violin charades, with assistance from Druml on the piano. When specific sounds, such as an ambulance, were featured in their composition, the stage lights responded by flashing red and blue, immersing the audience in a truly captivating and multisensory experience.
The central part of Yang and Chen’s performance revolved around a comedic odyssey, featuring the sudden appearance of an enigmatic figure donning a mask adorned with musical notes on the projection screen. Drawing inspiration from the hit series “Squid Game,” this character claimed to represent ‘The Academy,’ a supposed authority overseeing classical musicians, and declared that Chen and Yang were disgracing classical music. They were challenged to undertake the formidable ‘Ling Ling Exam’ — a whimsically concocted, rigorous musical test tailored for this show — in order to redeem themselves.
The test featured an array of popular classical music pieces, such as Massenet’s “Meditation from Thaïs,” Monti’s “Czardas,” and Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24.” However, rather than delivering these pieces in the traditional static manner typical of classical musicians, they found creative, innovative ways to elicit laughter from the audience. In particular, Chen, Yang, and Druml tackled “Czardas” while blindfolded. Chen and Yang also showcased their signature move of playing the violin while hula hooping , a feat they had previously demonstrated on their past tour and on YouTube.
One of the concert’s most beloved moments for the audience occurred when two fortunate attendees had the chance to select a piece for both Chen and Yang to perform as part of the ‘Ling Ling Exam.’ The selection process involved spinning a wheel, which featured 12 renowned violin concertos.
Chen first performed the opening of Saint-Saëns’s “Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 61” while Yang gently coerced a toddler into spinning the wheel so that it landed on Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64.”
The culmination of the exam unfolded as the enigmatic figure from ‘The Academy,’ reappeared, announcing his final stipulation: Only one individual could successfully pass the ‘Ling Ling Exam.’ Yang and Chen engaged in a spirited showdown for the coveted title, performing Wieniawski’s “Etude-Caprice Op. 18, No. 4.” In the end, Yang emerged victorious, securing his passage in this examination and a prize of a prestigious solo performance.
However, during the solo winner’s performance, Yang extended a warm invitation to Chen to join him back on stage, emphasizing the idea that classical music is most powerful when shared. Together with Druml, they delivered a captivating rendition of several compositions, including Handel-Halvorson’s “Passacaglia.” While the majority of the exam journey had been marked by humor, this part of the performance adopted a more solemn tone, leaving the audience unsure of how to respond to the shift in mood. The initial commotion from certain audience members posed some challenges for TwoSet Violin in starting their piece and created a bit of distraction not only for the artists on stage, but also for those who sought to enjoy the music in the moment.
Overall, TwoSet Violin’s concert was a breath of fresh air for the world of classical music, bridging the gap between comedy and the traditional formality that classical music often brings to the table. Yang and Chen seamlessly translated their online humor to the live stage, incorporating a unique blend of classical music, comedy, and theater in their performance and ultimately creating a captivating experience that resonated with everyone present.

The Four Million Subscribers concert with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the collaboration concert we did with bass player Davie504 were two very different concerts within three months of each other. With both concerts, we experienced scalpers, which is very interesting. It was our first time that we actually ran into this scenario. Our Four Million Subscribers concert was such a milestone for us, but mainly for our fans, because the YouTube live stream was free for everyone.
It was my dream to play with an orchestra with a Strad . This was everything coming together. We picked the Victoria Concert Hall as our venue, but the seating was only about 600 to 700 capacity. Due to organising a time when the orchestra is available, and also when the venue is available, we couldn’t find a bigger venue. Because the seating was so limited, tickets sold out within a few minutes. There were thousands of people waiting in line on ticketing websites, which resulted in scalpers: people who buy a ticket, then resell it for a much higher price. I don’t know how I feel about that. I think there were fans buying tickets for around $700-$800 per ticket for this event. And I know this event is quite a special event, even though we’re streaming for free. I think a lot of people wanted to be there.

A third of the audience there had flown from all around the world, just to see this concert. With the scalper situation, honestly, we didn’t really have a solution for that. We actually tried to find a semi-solution for the Davie x TwoSet concert: we actually just announced the concert privately, we didn’t really make a big announcement. That way, the fans had a chance to actually get tickets, which kind of worked. I’m glad that happened.
Talking of concerts though, moving forward, we have our world tour coming up. A lot of people are asking about what type of show it is. My answer is, it’s a mix of storytelling, classical music and a bit of comedy in a typical TwoSet style. It’s been four years since we’ve been on the road! We’re going to Canada, Europe, UK, as well as Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
There has to be a framework in our shows. We don’t just walk on stage and do whatever. Normally our shows, are first of all tours have certain messages and values we want to share. Our virtual tour we did one a half years ago was that we were in this world where classical music could be lost forever. We had to go back in time and meet different composers and we’d show the personality of every composer in different timelines. You need that framework in order for creativity to come out. Otherwise, it’s just all loose cannons, you don’t know what’s going on.
The upcoming world tour will span across two years, bringing TwoSet Violin to more than 30 cities. With an all-new script promising wit and musicality, audience members will be treated to a show that’s uniquely TwoSet, inviting everyone to have a great time to enjoy classical music.

A concerto, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is “a piece for one or more soloists and orchestra with three contrasting movements.” And for most classical music fans, “concerto” means one of big romantic ones by Beethoven or Tchaikovsky, works in which there is a kind of dramatic struggle between soloist and orchestra.
But on today’s date in 2003, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and its concertmaster Stephen Copes premiered a Violin Concerto that didn’t quite fit that mold. For starters, it had four movements, and this Violin Concerto No. 2 by American composer George Tsontakis was more “democratic” than romantic — meaning the solo violinist seems to invite the other members of the orchestra to join in the fun, rather than hogging all the show. This concerto is more like a friendly, playful game than a life-and-death contest, and Tsontakis even titles his second movement “Gioco” or “Games.”
The new concerto proved a winner, being selected for the prestigious 2005 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. Even so, George Tsontakis confesses to being a little shy when sitting in the audience as his music is played, knowing full well, he says, that most people came to hear the Beethoven or Tchaikovsky, and not him.

Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert
Avatar : The Last Airbender In Concert presents a live orchestral rendition of the series’ iconic soundtrack, paired with a nearly two-hour special recap of the animated series’ three seasons displayed on a full-size cinema screen. The projection will feature the original dialogue and sound effects without any pre-recorded music, allowing the live orchestra to perform the legendary score live and in perfect sync with the show scenes. The result? A truly immersive and grandiose concert experience that breathes new life into “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
Just as “Avatar: The Last Airbender” masterfully blends Chinese culture with anime and American cartoon styles, an orchestra especially handpicked for this event will harmoniously combine Eastern and Western musical traditions – a symphonic fusion that faithfully reflects the signature sound of the Avatar saga. Taiko drums and erhus will share the spotlight with violins and clarinets, while the series’ fan-favorite scenes are presented in chronological order on the film screen, breathing life into Aang’s liberating quest in an epic and authentic way.
The creative mastermind behind the show’s original music, award-winning composer Jeremy Zuckerman, has poured his heart and exceptional talent into reimagining and expanding the show’s soundtrack specially for this event. Through the creative collaboration with Jeff Adams (the show’s original editor) and under the artistic guidance of the show’s creators, Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, this spectacular production not only magnifies the essence of the series, but also marks a groundbreaking moment – the very first opportunity for the audience to immerse themselves in the captivating world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” through a live experience.

Theatres in Moscow
Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.
There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.
A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.
Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.
The Bolshoi Theatre
The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.
If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.
In August the Bolshoi is closed.
The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre
This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.
The Novaya Opera
“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .
Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center
The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.
Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory
These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.
Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)
This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

So Yeon Ryu Steps Away From LPGA Tour at The Chevron Championship
Tickets on sale for the 2024 fm global championship.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — In all her years on the LPGA Tour, So Yeon Ryu never felt proud of herself.
Not after her six victories or her two major titles or becoming the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1. It has always been hard for her to enjoy those moments for what they were and revel in her success, something that she wishes she could’ve done more of throughout her career, one of few regrets she’ll openly admit she has about an otherwise solid tenure as a professional golfer.
But, when Ryu announced her retirement just a few weeks ago on Instagram, the outpouring of love and support she received from her friends and fellow players got her to finally realize just how much impact she’s had on the LPGA Tour and those that follow it, that no matter her score or final result, she made a difference in the lives of others, both on and off the golf course.
“I don’t think I can do or will do anything differently if I go back,” Ryu said. “But one thing is I want to live the moment, instead of thinking about how I’m going to be better, how I’m going to compete with the other players, how I’m going to be a better player all the time. I push myself instead of giving myself the compliment that you’ve done a really, really great job.”
“The first time ever genuinely I feel like I’m proud of myself was when people were saying so many great messages. That was very, very touching. A lot of my colleagues 100% understand why I made this decision. Most of my colleagues were happy for me, and then I was very happy that they consider me one of the consistent players and one of the players that feels happy on Tour because I wanted to be remembered that way.”
Cheers to a great career 🥂 @AzaharaGOLF brought the goods for @1soyeonryu after the final round of her career pic.twitter.com/rl81uVFmuN — LPGA (@LPGA) April 19, 2024
Ryu is a player who, despite not reaching every single goal she set for herself or winning every tournament she teed it up in, put a premium on her relationships during her time on the LPGA Tour. And never was that more evident than on the 18th green on Friday at The Chevron Championship.
A group of players, young and old, of all different backgrounds and walks of life, were there with open arms, ready to congratulate their friend on a fantastic career. But, maybe more importantly, they were there to thank her for being the role model she has been to so many over the years, to show her just how much they respect and appreciate her and what she’s done for women’s golf.
Lydia Ko, one of the greatest female golfers to compete over the last couple of decades on the LPGA Tour, couldn’t hold back the tears when she hugged Ryu after finishing her round just one group behind her. Ko didn’t mince words when saying what Ryu’s friendship has meant throughout her career on the LPGA Tour, expressing gratitude for getting to know So Yeon the person, not just So Yeon the golfer. “I knew of her name even before I was a pro,” said Ko as her eyes continued to glisten. “To be able to have played a lot of rounds together and have dinner and talk about the stresses of golf or other things like that, it's been so much fun. I've been very fortunate to have people like So Yeon that have taken me under their wing.
“It's a very special moment, and it shows what kind of person she is and what kind of classy player she is by seeing all the players and people here waiting for her in this last moment. For me to be able to compete here in her last event and an event that means a lot to her is pretty awesome. It's bittersweet. I want to keep playing on Tour alongside her, but excited for her second chapter in life.”
It also spoke volumes that a large majority of those people on 18 were of Korean descent, as players like Narin An, Hye-Jin Choi, In Gee Chun, Jeongeun Lee6, Haeran Ryu and her groupmate Jin Young Ko were standing by, waiting for Ryu with flowers and a hug.
Se Ri Pak and Inbee Park are often credited with establishing and maintaining the tradition of Korean excellence that’s now a consistent presence on the LPGA Tour. But it’s players like So Yeon Ryu who have also carried that mantle forward, who have inspired the next generation of superstars, even if she won’t readily accept that compliment.
“I'm always ready to help them out if they ask me to help,” Ryu said. “For me, they're already such great players, I feel like they don't need my help. They were always so nice to tell me that I was the inspiration, so I just keep telling myself, you should be proud of yourself.”
And Ryu has every right to take pride in all that she has done on the LPGA Tour. Others would have given anything to win two majors and be considered the best player on the planet. Even though she had some heart-breaking near misses, there were more than enough triumphs to make up for them, enough happy memories to overpower the voices telling her she’d never stack up.
But Ryu has never measured her life in accomplishments, knowing that at the end of the day, the headlines and trophies and accolades will eventually fade away, lost in history books tucked away in far corners of long-forgotten shelves, and the only things that would remain are her integrity and character as a human being.
“When people ask me, ‘What’s your goal?’ I never really thought about becoming a Hall of Famer or becoming a world No. 1,” reflected Ryu. “I wanted to be a remarkable player as a person, that I did something to make women’s golf better and golf better. When I meet young kids on the course, and there’s one that says, ‘You inspired me’ or ‘You’re my role model,’ I feel as happy as when I won a major.”
Ahead of this week at The Chevron Championship, a retirement event that Ryu was never sure she wanted to have, she had the phrase “So Yeon’s Last Dance With Vokey” stamped on her wedges, something to commemorate her final event on the LPGA Tour and remind her to enjoy the moment as she made her way around The Club at Carlton Woods.
The musical metaphor is a fitting one for Ryu, who is well-known for her piano and violin talents off the golf course. And while she might’ve wanted her last dance to last just a little bit longer, Ryu sang a swansong expressing appreciation and humility as she bid farewell to her life on the LPGA Tour, sending a loving thank you to those who have supported her since she won that U.S. Women’s Open all those years ago.
“To my fellow players, I'm very thankful to have you guys as my colleagues,” said a choked-up Ryu in her last post-round press conference. “You guys were the reason why I wanted to be a better golfer all the time. And then to fans, no matter how I played, you guys were there always to support me, so I'm very, very thankful. I just want to send a lot of love.”
Who knows when it will finally set in, when it will hit Ryu that this part of her life story has officially reached its end. It was a fun ride, a spectacular dance, one that she can look back on fondly when she finally lets the emotion wash over her.
But for now, as the final notes of her swansong fade, a new melody has already begun to come within earshot, promising the 33-year-old exciting next adventure.
Enjoy this next song, So Yeon. Be proud of yourself. You’ve earned it.
