U2 Announce Sphere Las Vegas Dates. The Edge Calls it a ‘Quantum Leap Forward’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Edge is normally reserved and immune to hyperbole when discussing U2 ‘s latest plans. But the group’s schedule in opening up Sphere in Las Vegas this September has the U2 guitarist atypically talking in grandiose terms.

“My hope is that this will be a kind of quantum leap forward in the sense of what a concert can be,” he tells Rolling Stone.

The group will kick off its Achtung Baby Live at Sphere Las Vegas residency on Sept. 29, with additional shows taking place on Sept. 30 and Oct. 5, 7, and 8. One day after the residency was announced, seven more concerts were scheduled for Oct. 11, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, and 25. And a few weeks later, eight more shows were added on Dec. 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, and 16.

U2 first heard about Sphere a little over two years ago. “We’re always on the lookout for emerging technologies in the world of concerts and audio,” says the Edge. “We heard about it, and then started asking members of our team about it. We found out that approaches had already been made in a very tentative way for us to be a part of a possible launch.”

The band is a natural fit for Sphere, given its boundary-pushing live-music experience of Zoo TV and PopMart in the Nineties, and more recently with the U2 360° Tour and Songs of Innocence / Experience tours. But those shows all took place at venues designed for sports. “You’re battling far-from-optimal acoustics in these place, since they haven’t been designed for sound,” says the Edge. “It’s just a constant battle to overcome the coloration that the venue gives to the audio. The gap between what you want to put across and what you actually put across is often huge.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

That playpen includes the highest-resolution LED screen on Earth, 10,000 vibrating “immersive seats,” environmental effects like temperature control and cool breezes, and 164,000 speakers. Members of the press, including Rolling Stone, were recently taken to a rehearsal facility in Burbank, California, to show off some of Sphere’s offerings, which makes the traditional IMAX experience seem quaint and chintzy by comparison.

“It really gives you the opportunity to bring people back in time or to worlds that are completely computer-generated, but completely believable,” says the Edge. “It’s a new genre of immersive experience, almost like a new art form. The fun part for us is this phase we’re in now, where we’re trying to dream up what we will be doing with this technology. It’s just pure imagination.”

All-in ticket prices start at $140, and 60 percent of the seats will be under $300. For the new shows in December, U2.com subscribers can submit a ticket request, with the onsite opening today, May 12, and ending May 15 at 7 a.m. ET. Fans can also register for a chance to obtain tickets through Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program, with details set to go out the evening of May 17. A limited number of tickets will be available during a general onsale set to start May 19 at 12 p.m. ET. You’ll also be able to find on VividSeats.com .

“We’re trying our best to be as fair and respectful to our fans as we can be,” says the Edge. “We’re also spreading out the ticket costs so that there are some affordable ones. The most-sought-after tickets will be nontransferable. Inevitably, some will wind up on the secondary market. There’s not a huge lot we can do about that.”

Opening night comes just a few months after the 30th anniversary of Zooropa. “I think there will be some nods to Zooropa, ” says the Edge. “In our minds, the tours [for Achtung Baby and Zooropa ] blended into one. But I think Achtung Baby will be the main focus.”

U2 Confirm New Album in the Works, Possibility of ‘Zoo TV Tour’ Return

by Tina Benitez-Eves November 23, 2021, 11:55 am

“We are firmly locked in the tower of song and working away on a bunch of new things,” said U2’s Edge , while working on a new song with bassist Adam Clayton. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of U2’s seventh album Achtung Baby , the band is already well into a follow-up to their 2017 release, Songs of Experience .

Videos by American Songwriter

“I’m just having so much fun writing and not necessarily having to think about where it’s going to go,” said Edge in a recent interview. “It’s more about enjoying the experience of writing and having no expectations or limitations on the process.”

Still in the early stages of the process, the band has yet to land on a producer for the new album, but Edge added that he enjoyed working with Dutch DJ Martin Garrix on the UEFA Euro 2020 song “We Are the People.”

“I hope to work with him in the future,” Edge said. “But we haven’t made any firm decisions on what the next thing will be in terms of personnel.”

The band recently shared the song “ Your Song Saved My Life ,” off the soundtrack for the upcoming animated featured Sing 2, which also features singer Bono in a starring role as the voice of the rock star lion Clay Calloway.

u2 achtung baby tour 2022

“That’s not a thing that U2 normally does, but it’s in the of spirit of mixing it up, keeping people guessing, and trying different things,” said Edge of the animated film. “It felt like a worthy thing. And also, it’s a movie about great songs and we we felt very comfortable in the company that we were keeping there.”

Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno-produced Achtung Baby, recorded in 1990 at the famed Hansa Studios in Berlin, Edge hinted at a possible return of returning to the multimedia-immersive Zoo TV Tour that supported the album.

“I would love that and I couldn’t rule it out,” he said. “I think [Zoo TV] is such a current thought. Back then, we were we’re dealing with the overload and kind of the whiplash of 24/7 news cycles, which hadn’t been known before. It was the overload of cable TV and hundreds and hundreds of channels. And little did we know that that was just the beginning of this avalanche of channels to kind of draw your attention.”

Edge added that the production team from that tour is still working with the band, so it’s something they wouldn’t rule out for an upcoming tour. The band’s last tour was in 2019, commemorating the 30th anniversary of their fifth album The Joshua Tree . “I think Zoo TV could absolutely come back and be just as relevant,” added Edge, “but we haven’t actually got to the point of doing anything more than this kind of talk, but I wouldn’t rule it out again.”

Off tour for the past two years, and following the pandemic, Edge said that the band need some time off after being either in the studio or on the road for five consecutive years. “As much as momentum is your friend, there’s a moment where you stop getting fed by momentum and it starts to drain you,” said Edge. “That’s because you need those moments of inactivity just to listen to music. We’re all enjoying that right now.”

Background Information

On January 13, 2022, U2 announced their newest fan club subscription gift, Achtung Baby 30 Live for the 2022 subscription year. The gift will be a limited edition CD set in a “special presentation package” featuring live tracks from Achtung Baby recorded over the last thirty years. Downloads of select tracks will be made available in advance of the physical release, and a full download will be available after the CD is sent to subscribers. The tracks are all taken from Achtung Baby from various tours throughout the years, and all of the tracks are unreleased to date with the exception of “Zoo Station” (Live from Buenos Aires, March 2, 2006) which was previously released on the “ Window in the Skies “ single, and “Mysterious Ways” (Live from Cape Town, February 18, 2011) which was featured on the “ U22 “ fan club album. The gift will come in a photo booklet, and will include commentary by author Bill Flanagan, who accompanied the band on their Zoo TV tour.

The full track listing was announced on September 27, 2022, and the first downloads from the gift were made available the same day with the release of “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” available in AAC format the same day via your U2.com profile. A second set of downloads were made available October 14, 2022 with the release of “One” and “Love is Blindness” in a zip file that also contained the earlier two tracks. On November 17, 2022, the downloads were expanded to six tracks, with the addition of “Even Better Than the Real Thing” and “Acrobat”. On December 30, 2022, the full 12 musical tracks were made available. (A 13th, hidden track, is not currently available to download.)

The gift is available via subscription only, and you can subscribe to receive the gift now at U2.Com/subscribe . A deluxe version of the subscription gift includes this year’s Achtung Baby 30 Live gift as well as last year’s Live at the Apollo For One Night Only release. If you are renewing a subscription, the cost is $40 (US), and if you are subscribing new, the cost will be $50 (US).

Initially the subscribe page at U2.Com listed this item would be a “Limited edition double CD set” with double CD set emphasized in bold. A couple of hours after being posted, this was edited to read “Limited edition CD set” instead with CD set emphasized. This was the only change made to the text. The help pages at U2.Com still referred to this item as a “double-CD” for a couple of days after those changes but was eventually changed to state that this item is a single CD as well. The customer support team is also confirming that this subscription gift will be a single CD, and the track listing released was also for a single CD. The gift is being manufactured in Europe and shipped direct to European members from Europe this year.

All of the tracks from Achtung Baby have been performed live in concert, with a number of them being dusted off most recently in 2018 for the end of the “Experience + Innocence” tour. Of the songs played, “So Cruel” has been played the least, with only 3 appearances in the set list back in 1992, only twice in full. (Foxboro MA, Pontiac MI, and Tinley Park IL) and it is the performance from Michigan included on this release. The gift includes four tracks from the Zoo TV tour (1992-1993), one track from the Vertigo tour (2005-2006), one song from the Popmart tour (1997-1998), two tracks from the U2360 tour (2009-2011), one track from the Innocence and Experience tour (2015), one track from The Joshua Tree 2017 tour (2017) and two tracks from the Experience and Innocence tour (2018). Like previous gifts, the mix is not continuous, and tracks will fade in and fade out at the start and end of each track.

A full list of past gifts from the fan club is available here .

U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere

U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere #40

'This is 40'

One for the ages on Saturday night, never to be forgotten by those of us lucky to be there, with some big surprises and big emotions. Onstage surprises included longtime collaborator and friend Daniel Lanois to play on 'One' and, via remote recording, Neil Finn for a duet of his 'Don't Dream It's Over'. And a surprising and moving closing for the 18,000-strong congregation in the 'Elvis cathedral'.

'There might be an actual encore after this', Bono mused as the band began 'Beautiful Day', the last song of U2:UV set. After a snippet of 'Gloria' and The Beatles' 'Blackbird', Edge and Adam switched sides, and a roar went up as fans recognized what that stagecraft signalled… the final song of the 40th and final night of U2:UV would be '40'.

'It's been 40 days and 40 nights in the desert — what's a fella with a messianic complex gonna do?'  asked Bono. 'This is a song we wrote in 40 minutes. We had 40 minutes on the 'War' album left to record, opened up the sacred text to the Psalm of David, and just kinda read it out— that was the lyric. This is “40”.'

As the band left the stage one by one — Bono first, then Adam, Bram, and finally the Edge, waiving one last time as he carried his guitar offstage — there were more than a few tear-streaked faces, singing the familiar litany:  How long to sing this song? How long to see this song?

Until we meet again….safe home.

If you were at the show in Vegas, add your own review and upload your photos below .

What Bono Said

Before 'Desire': 'You, sir, have run away with the circus…On the drums, this is Bram van den Berg — an extraordinary man. Take the microphone, if you would, sir', he said, as Bram stood to speak.

Bram:  'Where to start? Thank you, I guess. I mean, thank you guys, and Larry, for trusting me with this legacy. I [could have] been a total weirdo. You didn't do a background check, did you? Oh, I am a weirdo? It was a freakshow, right?'

Bono: 'If you had a job in the circus, what would you choose, what sort of a circus performer would you be? Let's say a musical contortionist? Tightrope walker, somethinlikethat?'

Bram: 'Safety net'.

'Before 'Don't Dream It's Over': 'The U2UV experience is kind of a tightly constructed show, but as it's our last night we wondered if it might be alright to experiment on ya a little bit'. Bono explained they had  something special in store tonight for their cover of Crowded House's 'Don't Dream It's Over', which they've been dedicating to Alexei Navalny since his death on February 16.

'The idea is to record something special to honor Alexei Navalny's widow, Yulia [Navalnaya], who's continuing a fight against Vladimir Putin for a free, free Russia, which is what we want for the rest of the people….We got a beautiful email from Neil Finn, who wrote this bewilderingly beautiful song and he attached to the email a version of the song that he said we could play — it's a new version that he did and we thought if we're gonna record, maybe if you'd be on that recording and we could make the session the last night kind-of recording session and dedicate it to Yulia. It goes, 'Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over…' and it's a song about freedom'.

'Comin' in from Auckland, New Zealand, this is Neil Finn', he said, as a recorded track of Finn singing the first lines  began to play.

Before Acrobat: 'Shall we wake the baby up? Fuckin' right we'll wake the baby up!'

After Acrobat:  'Was that intense enough for ya?'

To Coldplay front man Chris Martin, after singing a snippet of 'Yellow' during 'All I Want Is You': 'Happy Birthday, Chris Martin!'

To 'Mrs. The Edge', after 'Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World': 'Morleigh Steinberg — love you!'

To Dr. Jill Biden, while introducing 'All I Want Is You', dedicated to all the great women in their lives : 'And one woman in particular who's with us tonight — she's a teacher, she's your First Lady. This is for Jill Biden!'

To Yulia Navalnaya, at the end of 'Don't Dream It's Over', in a chant joined by the audience: 'Yulia! Yulia! Yulia! Beautiful'.

To Willie Williams during 'Love Is Blindness': 'Thank you, Willie Williams, for this blue sky'.

To  Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, during 'Beautiful Day': 'We believe in you…David Grohl…yes we do'.

To former Rolling Stone Magazine chief Jann Simon Wenner, during 'Atomic City': 'For everyone…for Jann SimON…SiMON!'

U2 to open MSG Sphere in fall ‘23; hints to ‘Achtung Baby’ revival

U2 is not planning to tour as it preps for MSG Sphere and “something special” in next show.

Bono, left, and The Edge of U2 perform at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in May 2018. (Chase Steve ...

The MSG Sphere might turn into Zoo Station next fall.

Bono of U2 is hinting at a revival of its seventh studio album, “Achtung Baby,” in 2023. “Zoo Station” kicks off that release. We’ve previously reported U2 is committed to a dozen dates at The MSG Sphere, beginning in the early fall of 2023.

That timeline obviously means the venue itself will be open in the fall of next year. Officials have said only that the Sphere would be open in the second half of ’23. The U2 residency tightens the horizon. By our calendars, fall begins Sept. 23, so look for weekend dates after that for the U2 series.

Those dates are to be spread over multiple months, and on non-consecutive weekends, according to original reports in July.

Exclusivity will increase demand for should already be a torrid ticket. U2 is not planning to tour as it preps for Vegas. Bono confirmed as much in a story published over the weekend in The Irish Times.

Also, the anniversary of “Achtung Baby” was last year. A celebration of that album seems to be in the offing for the Vegas shows.

As the 62-year-old rock legend said, “We are planning something special for ‘Achtung Baby,’ not a tour but something extraordinary. It is important to do retrospectives for any artist, but not too many. I have just spent a few years in the past and I am very keen to get to the future.”

In Las Vegas, the future reaches to the past. U2 played Sam Boyd Stadium (then Sam Boyd Silver Bowl) on its “Zoo TV” tour, supporting “Achtung Baby,” in November 1992, some 30 years ago.

It follows the huge success of U2's  Joshua Tree 30th anniversary stadium tour which was seen by over 3.2 million fans worldwide and their 2018 "eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE" indoor tour which played to a combined audience of 1 million across Europe and North America.

"U2 hasn't played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again," the band said on Monday (April 24). "And what a unique stage they're building for us out there in the desert. … We're the right band, Achtung Baby  the right album, and Sphere the right venue to take the live experience of music to the next level."

The U2 members added, "That's what U2's been trying to do all along with our satellite stages and video installations, most memorably on the 'ZOO TV Tour,' which ended in Tokyo 30 years ago this fall."

However, U2's  Larry Mullen Jr.  won't be a part of the dates . The band has already named his replacement . Watch a trailer below.  Get U2 tickets and more info here.

U2 is a rock band that was formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1976. The band consists of four members: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.

U2’s early sound was influenced by post-punk but eventually grew to incorporate influences from a wide range of genres, including electronica, experimental rock, and gospel.

U2 has released 14 studio albums and won 22 Grammy Awards. In addition, they are one of the bestselling bands of all time and have sold more than 170 million records worldwide.

In 2005, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Edge is known for his distinctive guitar style and has been ranked as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Adam Clayton is the bass player for the band, and Larry Mullen Jr. is the drummer.

But what makes U2 so great? Is it their unrivaled musicianship? Their catchy melodies? Or their ability to constantly reinvent themselves?

Whatever the reason, there’s no denying that U2 is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. And if you’re lucky enough to see them live, you’ll understand why.

They are a band that has left a lasting impression on the world and continues to be one of the most popular bands today.
