The Biggest UK Live Poker Tournaments

The United Kingdom is a nation of gamblers, so is it any wonder that the small island boasts so many successful and popular poker tours? If you're looking for a live poker experience in Britain, then look no further than these delicious options:

  • The PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour.
  • The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour.
  • The Genting Poker Series.
  • The Amateur Poker Association and Tour.
  • The PokerStars European Poker Tour London.

The PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT)

The PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT)

What is it: One of PokerStars' many successful local tours, and inarguably one of the most well-run and successful poker tours in the country. It comes with a higher-than-average reg-to-fish ratio than most but the big fields give natural good value.

Money talks: Last year the events carried a typical buy-in of £1,100, up from the £770 of 2012. However, many events carried a guarantee of at least £500,000/€500,000 with Galway hosting a €1m guaranteed event. In 2024 the tour guarantees almost £2.5 million across five confirmed stops.

Are there satellites: Since the tour is sponsored by the world's largest online poker room there are naturally more satellites than you can shake a stick at - players can qualify for as little as £5.

The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT)

What is it: The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour is one of the oldest running poker tours in the UK, and definitely one of the most successful. Anyone who's anyone in UK poker has played their fair share of these tournaments.

Money talks: The typical buy-in is £1,100 but there are many events with £550 entries - the cheapest is the Goliath in Coventry, which has a £120 buy-in and aims to break the European tournament attendance record in its upcoming event.

Are there satellites: Online, satellites are available via GrosvenorCasinos.com As the GUKPT travels the country to various locations you can usually find live satellites running ahead of the stop in your local casino.

The Genting Poker Series (GPS)

What is it: A small yet very well-attended and well-regarded series of tournaments in the UK that boasts winners such as Julian Thew and finalists like Ross Boatman.

Money talks: The usual buy-in for a GPS Main Event is £400. Side events carry smaller buy-ins.

Are there satellites: There's satellites running online via Genting's own online poker room - you can qualify to their Main Events for as little as £5.50 for some poker loyalty points.

The Amateur Poker Association and Tour (APAT)

What is it: The Tour part of the APAT name is when they take their show on the road, with affordable yet professional tournaments across the country. Last year's Main Event carried a buy-in of just £82 but generated a £10,000 prize pool.

Money talks: Easily the most affordable tour on this list because it caters to recreational players - buy-ins range from just £30 to £100.

Are there satellites: They're thin on the ground, owing to the cheapness of the events. APAT do run an online poker room, though, so satellites to some larger events are usually available.

The PokerStars European Poker Tour London (EPT)

What is it: The aforementioned Main Event is just part of the annual EPT festivities in London, as the tour comes with dozens of side events in the £100 - £3,000 range.

Money talks: As mentioned, the EPT is not for those with a small bankroll. The buy in for Main Even is £5000. There are smaller events in beforehand, which run from £100 to £3000.

Are there satellites: To the Main Event, yes. Side events generally don't have satellites running, but some of them are relatively low buy-ins.

Pantera announce first UK and Ireland headline tour in 20 years

The dates come on the heels of their slot at Download 2024

Pantera, 2024

Pantera have announced their first UK and Ireland tour in 20 years – find ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Horns up! What’s driving film and TV’s metal revival?

The heavy metal icons will be headed across the pond in early 2025, and the tour will mark their first time performing headline shows here in two decades.

They first announced plans to reunite with a revamped line-up back in July 2022 – this saw Zakk Wylde ( Black Label Society , Ozzy Osbourne ) on guitar and Charlie Benante ( Anthrax ) on drums joining original members, frontman Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown.

The news broke following the band signing a deal with Artist Group International for a series of US tour dates .

Wylde took on the role from late guitarist Dimebag Darrell, who was killed onstage in 2004 . Benante, meanwhile, fills the role left by the late Vinnie Paul who died from medical complications in 2018 .

While the reformed line-up have taken to the stage multiple times across the US since reforming – including acting as support for Metallica on their ‘72 Seasons’ tour – their dates in the UK and Ireland have been limited. Up until now, they had only been booked to perform in the UK at this year’s edition of Download .

Now, they have confirmed a headline tour set for early 2025, which includes five shows and kicks off at the OVO Hydro arena in Glasgow on February 18. The tour continues the following night (19) with a stop lined up at First Direct Arena in Leeds, followed by a gig at the 3Arena in Dublin two days after that (21).

A penultimate show is scheduled for the BP Pulse Live venue in Birmingham on February 23, before the tour concludes with a stop at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on February 25.

Tickets go on sale June 21, and various pre-sale and VIP options are also available. Visit here for tickets and check out a full list of new tour dates below.

Pantera’s 2025 UK and Ireland tour dates are:

FEBRUARY 18 – Glasgow @ OVO Hydro 19 – Leeds @ First Direct Arena 21 – Dublin @ 3Arena 23 – Birmingham @ BP Pulse Live 25 – London @ OVO Arena Wembley

As aforementioned, the first UK gig Pantera have lined up is for Download Festival later this weekend, and the performance will mark their first UK appearance in three decades.

It also comes following Anselmo and Brown speaking publicly for the first time about their reformation and new line-up . “It’s empowering. It is incredibly beautiful, and you feel so much love when you’re up there. And if you take it in, it’s a great feeling, man. These days, man, that’s where me and Rex, you know, we get to dig the shows more,” Anselmo said, also going on to compare how the band have changed compared to their early days.

“When we were younger, we were at war and when we were onstage; we were just angry and at war, man. Now it’s — the songs are there. I can concentrate on singing the fricking songs, number one. Geez, that’s a relief for me, man. I don’t have to break my fricking body in part anymore.”

The reformation of Pantera has also been marred by controversy, following Anselmo being accused of racism in recent years.

Last year, two major German festivals removed Pantera from the line-up over an outcry relating to past allegations of racism , which was followed by a cancelled appearance in Vienna .

They were due to perform at 2023’s Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park, however, it was confirmed that they had been removed from the line-ups following a public outcry.

“In the last few weeks, we have had many intensive conversations with artists, our partners and you, the festival fans, we have continued to deal with the criticism together and decided to remove the band from the programme,” read a statement from the festival at the time.

Phil Anselmo of Pantera performs at Scotiabank Arena on February 26, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario

The allegations of racism date back to 2016 when frontman Anselmo offered to leave his band Down following an incident in which he was filmed carrying out a Nazi salute and shouting “white power”.

Anselmo was forced to apologise after being caught on film making the salute at the end of his performance at Dimebash 2016, a festival held in Hollywood in tribute to his late bandmate Dimebag Darrell.

Anselmo initially dismissed his actions as a “joke” before later issuing a statement that read: “Every citizen in this entire world has the unalienable right to live with dignity and respect without hate or oppression. And I mean this, with all of my crushed, yet, guilty heart.

“It’s common knowledge that we can choose to either learn from our mistakes, or continue on a path of insensitivity and destruction. I am utterly responsible for the mistakes I have made, and can only give you my word to no longer do them in the present, through action, not just mere words.”

His actions were condemned by members of the music world at the time , including Machine Head frontman Rob Flynn who addressed the story in a video , calling Anselmo a “bully” and saying: “I was there, and I could tell you for a fact that there wasn’t a chardonnay or a pinot grigio in sight backstage. In fact, the only thing you were drinking, Phil Anselmo, was Becks German beer. Maybe that’s where the joke came from.”

Anthrax ’s Scott Ian described Anselmo’s actions as “vile” soon after the event. “Friends,” Ian posted on his website, “Hate speech. Racism. Inflammatory rhetoric. All dangerous no matter what the context. I have ZERO TOLERANCE for any of this and to not speak out against them is as dangerous as the acts themselves.”

Irish bar which hosted Taylor Swift 13 years ago would ‘love to have her back’

T he manager of an Irish bar who claims Taylor Swift dined and watched Irish dancing there in 2011 said he would “love to have her back” ahead of her Eras Tour in Dublin.

The US singer, who will be playing three nights in Dublin, Ireland, as part of the UK leg of her Eras Tour, signed a guest book after dining at The Church Cafe, Bar and Restaurant on Jervis Street in the Irish capital, according to the bar’s general manager, Darren Moore.

The guest book includes Taylor Swift’s handwritten name, featuring squiggles and stars, along with Swift’s guitarist Paul Sidoti and Elizabeth Huett, formerly the popstar’s backup singer.

Mr Moore, 43, said the Bad Blood singer enjoyed Irish music and dancing and described her as “very polite” when she dined with her entourage at the restaurant on March 24, 2011.

He told the PA news agency: “We had some Irish music and dancing at the time, so they were listening to that and watching the dancing.

“They were really nice people. She was really nice. Very polite and really easy to deal with.

“I suppose we didn’t want to intrude. Social media was around, but it wouldn’t have been as prevalent as it is now, so we didn’t really want to intrude, asking for photos.

“We have a guest book, so I asked ‘Would you guys mind signing the book when you’re leaving?'”

The manager plans to unveil a plaque marking the exact table where he said Taylor Swift was seated when she visited 13 years ago and “give fans the opportunity to sit in the same seat that she sat when she came in”.

He added he will be playing a “dedicated playlist” featuring Taylor Swift hits all day at the bar “to welcome Swifties”.

At the time, Mr Moore received a phone call requesting a booking for an important person before Swift and her entourage arrived in six vans with tinted windows but was asked to keep her presence under wraps.

The Grammy award-winning musician was given private seats on the bar’s mezzanine level overlooking the bar and restaurant.

Ahead of her Eras Tour in Dublin, the bar manager urged Swift to return for a drink at the same table as 13 years ago.

“It was 13 years ago now and she was a big star then, but not as big as she is now,” he said.

“We’d love to have her back here again. It would be great to welcome her back in again.

“We wish her all the best with her amazing tour. Perhaps she can rebook the same table.

“I hope she enjoys her time in Ireland as well.”

The Church Cafe Bar is a converted 320-year-old church, known for being the same building where Guinness creator Arthur Guinness was married in 1725, and more recently has served Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, singer Shane Ward and Irish actor Killian Scott.

Mr Moore is gearing up for a busy weekend as Swifties travel to the Irish capital to watch the singer at the Aviva Stadium.

“We’d be definitely expecting an influx of Swifties over the week and leading into next week as well,” he said.

“I’m sure we’ll have plenty of customers up in the next few days as well that will hopefully be going.

“(Swift) gets a lot of people following from the States and travelling to see our show. So I expect to see a lot of people in from the States and the UK that are following the tour rounds as well.”
