  • > “As part of my Ph.D., I’m looking at soil frost using ground penetrating radar as flown from a UAS (drone).” Tim Hoheneder is a civil and environmental engineering Ph.D. student studying winter and cold climate processes with a UAS antenna. Tim says soil frost measures how deep the ground is frozen and can control several hydrological and biological processes between the winter and spring seasons. To prepare for the colder months, Tim learns to fly the drones at UNH’s Thompson Farm. “UAS-flown GPR provides a considerable advantage, allowing us to collect spatially continuous measurements of soil frost and not disturb the snowpack when conducting measurements.”
  • > “At the end of the day, the essence of public policy is: ‘How can we make better decisions using public resources, and how can we use those resources to improve the most number of people’s lives?’” Public policy master’s student Av Harris began his MPP graduate program 24 years after receiving his UNH undergraduate degree. After a full career in journalism & state government, AV has returned to the UNH community—working towards his masters with an aspiration to enhance communities’ standard of living & lessen economic disparity. For Av, Carsey’s quality education, the supportive & accomplished faculty, and his fellowship working with the New Hampshire Youth Retention Initiative are some of the top highlights of the MPP program. These resources give Av the opportunity to apply his education in real-world settings—so he’ll be ready to hit the ground-running as soon as he graduates. Whether you’re an established professional like Av or an emerging leader, you can structure your MPP education around your unique goals. • > “Being immersed in a foreign culture opened my eyes to not only how businesses in other countries may conduct business differently than in America, but it also made me realize the many cultural/social differences as well. There are so many facets to international business I am now aware of, and experiencing them firsthand was an amazing experience.” Last month, Paul College’s MBA students went international with a trip to Portugal! 🇵🇹 Over the span of nine days, students engaged in business experiential learning and Portuguese cultural immersion—made complete with presentations from Portugal’s top business & economic hubs and travel excursions to Portugal’s historic and culturally-rich spots. Check out what students were up to! First stop – Lisbon. Known affectionately as “Europe’s San Francisco,” MBA students spent 4 days in Lisbon visiting various business professionals and industries, with visits to historic sites along the way. Notable meetings included a presentation from the US Embassy, meeting the creative and technological marketing agency WYgroup, and learning about innovative trends in education from the United Lisbon Education Hub. Site visits included touring Jerónimos Monastery, strolling through Lello Library (credited as Europe’s most beautiful bookstore) and catching the breeze at Cabo de Roca—the most western point of continental Europe. Students then ventured 200 miles north to Porto, where visitations focused on the Portuguese economy and economic relations between Portugal/U.S. Seminars included meeting the administration of Sogrape Vinhos Group—a top port wine seller in Porto—and visiting the Sogrape Vila wine cellar. Students also expanded their knowledge of international supply chain management with a group tour at Mariano, one of Portugal’s esteemed, traditional footwear companies. Finally, after visiting Aveiro, or the “Venice of Portugal,” students celebrated the end of a successful trip with a final farewell dinner—featuring traditional Portuguese specialties and famous Portuguese wine. Many thanks to all representatives and faculty for making this year’s trip a success! Until next time, Portugal 👋

Black Heritage Trail of NH presents 2024 Sankofa Guided Walking Tours

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Black History tours have been going on for 30 years. The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH) expanded these tours state-wide seven years ago. Known for sharing a truer, more inclusive history of New Hampshire, BHTNH’s 2024 tour season kicks off with a special “Ona Judge Day” tour on Tuesday, May 21, at 2 pm. Afterward, guided tours are on Saturdays and Sundays from May 25 - Nov. 3. Beyond the addition of the “Ona Judge Day” - two other new “Living History Tours” will feature both Prince Whipple and the 1779 Petition for Freedom and Jack Staines, the “blackjack” seafarer who married Ona Judge. And, a Dover Tour has been added to the lineup. For a complete list, visit  https://blackheritagetrailnh.org/sankofa-guided-walking-tours-2/

The 2024 series includes 17 different tours with topics including NH’s involvement slave trade, the early Black community and economy, Black soldiers in the Revolutionary War, and Harriet Wilson, the first African American novelist - who published in 1859. Beyond Portsmouth, guided walking tours will take place in Exeter, Milford, Dover, Hancock, Warner, NH, and Kittery, ME. They are led by expert guides who are trained in BHTNH’s Sankofa approach - literally “reaching back to get it.” Sankofa Scholars are well versed on the history and culture of African Americans, and pursue a deeper understanding of racism grounded in historical research.

Important Tour Information

Unless otherwise stated, all guided tours start at 2 p.m., at 222 Court Street. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure time. If you do not arrive by five minutes before departure time, your spot may be given to another participant. Tours typically take 90 minutes. Registration is required prior to taking tours. If you have not pre-registered, and if there is space available, we will register you onsite to join the tour. There is a maximum of 20 participants per tour. Cost: $20 per person; $15 (with ID) for Seniors & Military; $10 for Students.

May 1, 2024 - US campus protests

By Elizabeth Wolfe, Kathleen Magramo, Dalia Faheid, Antoinette Radford, Emma Tucker, Anna Cooban, Rachel Ramirez, Aditi Sangal, Elise Hammond, Maureen Chowdhury, Lauren Mascarenhas, Chandelis Duster and Tori B. Powell, CNN

Our live coverage of the protests at US colleges has moved here

USC reopens campus to school community after closing due to protesters unaffiliated with university

From CNN's Taylor Romine

The University of Southern California reopened its campus to the school community Wednesday night after temporarily closing because "demonstrators unaffiliated with USC" were protesting next to the campus, the school said.

The protesters were gathered at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street, the school said in a post at around 8 p.m. It was not clear what they were protesting.

Shortly after 9 p.m., the school said the demonstrators had left the area and the campus was reopened to "students, staff, faculty, and registered guests."

UCLA police tell people to leave encampment over loudspeaker

UCLA police over loudspeaker told those in the encampment to leave a little before 8 p.m. PT Wednesday evening.

Police are warning those in the encampment they may be "in violation of the law and subject to administrative actions."

LAPD issues city-wide "tactical alert" putting officers on notice about UCLA protest

From CNN's Josh Campbell

The Los Angeles Police Department has issued a city-wide "tactical alert" related to the unlawful assembly declared at a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The alert notifies all LAPD personnel that they could be called on tonight to assist with the ongoing situation on campus, if needed.

During a tactical alert, some lower-priority calls for police services may not be addressed.

Several law enforcement agencies coordinate their approach to UCLA encampment, source says

From CNN's Nick Watt

Police officers get into position as pro-Palestinian students and activists demonstrate on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on May 1.

The large law enforcement presence on UCLA's campus is comprised of several agencies to perform specific tasks to clear the encampment, according to a source familiar with law enforcement plans:

  • The Los Angeles Police Department will secure the perimeter.
  • The California Highway Patrol will enter the encampment.
  • The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department will be responsible for crowd control.

Law enforcement on site will be equipped with protective gear, including gas masks, according to the source. The UCLA hospital will also be on standby to receive anyone who may be injured, the source said.

State police deployed to University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College took people into custody

From CNN’s Joe Sutton

Police arrest several protesters at Dartmouth College on Wednesday night.

State police were deployed to the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College due to “illegal activity and at the request of local law enforcement,” the New Hampshire Department of Safety told CNN.

"All individuals who were taken into custody are being processed by the University of New Hampshire Police Department and the Hanover Police Department,” said Tyler Dumont, New Hampshire Department of Safety spokesman. “The members of the New Hampshire State Police are committed to protecting the constitutional rights of Granite Staters while also ensuring those who violate the law are held accountable."

The University of New Hampshire told CNN that students supporting Palestinians had peacefully protested on campus at least seven times over the past six months.

"Despite much communication with organizers regarding the University’s expectations for conduct when exercising their free speech rights, those guidelines were ignored today. Protesters erected tents in an attempt to create an encampment on UNH property."

The university said it will protect free speech on campus but "will not allow it to be co-opted by a small group of protesters, including outside agitators.”

CNN has reached out to Dartmouth College for comment.

Multiple people were arrested during an ongoing pro-Palestinian protest at Dartmouth College on Wednesday night, according to CNN affiliate  WMUR .

Multiple people arrested at Dartmouth College in standoff between protesters and police

From CNN’s Jillian Sykes

Police arrest several protesters at Dartmouth College on Wednesday night.

Multiple people have been arrested during an ongoing pro-Palestinian protest at Dartmouth College on Wednesday night, according to CNN affiliate  WMUR .

Video from WMUR shows police pulling protesters one-by-one from the crowd gathered on the Dartmouth Green and detaining them with zip ties.

Protesters can be heard chanting “Free Palestine” while holding banners and flags.

The crowd appears to be a mix of students and members of the community, WMUR says.

About 16 arrested following protest at University at Buffalo, school says

Approximately 16 people were arrested Wednesday night after a pro-Palestine protest at the University at Buffalo's North Campus, including students and "other individuals not affiliated with the University at Buffalo," the school said in a release.

Those people were arrested after being "advised of, and failing to comply, with an order to disperse for a violation of UB’s  Picketing and Assembling Policy  that prohibits encampments and overnight assemblies," the release reads.

"While many protesters peacefully left the area after being advised multiple times by UB Police that those remaining at the protest would be arrested if they did not disperse at dusk, unfortunately some individuals elected to ignore the requests of UB Police and were arrested."

"A few individuals" attempted to resist arrest, and two officers were assaulted, the release reads.

In an earlier  release , the university said its chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine originally organized a march at the North Campus on Wednesday.

Around  50 people , including students and others not affiliated with the university, continued to protest into Wednesday evening, the university said.

Many left the area after warnings from university police to disperse at dusk, but others were arrested outside of Hochstetter Hall, the university said .

"While the decision to arrest individuals occurred after multiple discussions, communications and warnings to protesters, UB Police prioritized the safety and security of the university community by upholding and enforcing all applicable laws, SUNY rules and UB polices."

The university said it recognizes and respects the right to protest but emphasized that overnight assemblies and indoor and outdoor encampments are prohibited.

"The university recognizes and respects the right to protest afforded under the First Amendment," the release announcing the arrests reads. "However, those members of the university community and visitors who wish to express their viewpoints through picketing and other forms of demonstration are permitted to peacefully do so but must not violate the provisions of the  Rules for the Maintenance of Public Order of the SUNY Board of Trustees  and must adhere to UB’s  Picketing and Assembling Policy , including the prohibition of overnight assemblies, and indoor and outdoor encampments."

Five tents were previously placed on campus but were removed by protesters after they were advised by university staff and police.

Unlawful assembly declared at UCLA encampment, source says

From CNN's Josh Campbell and Nick Watt

Law enforcement has declared an unlawful assembly for a pro-Palestinian encampment at the university's quad, a source familiar with the situation tells CNN.

Declaring a gathering unlawful is a step police typically take before ordering individuals to disperse or face arrest.

CNN witnessed more than 100 law enforcement officers from various agencies entering the campus Wednesday, including a stream of officers wearing riot helmets and carrying zip ties.

Aerial video from CNN affiliate KABC shows dozens of police vehicles and a law enforcement mobile command post gathered at the FBI's Los Angeles field office parking lot, which is approximately one mile from the UCLA encampment.

Hundreds of people had gathered outside the encampment Wednesday evening, most appearing to be seated on the ground across from the entrance to the camp, the aerial footage shows. Inside the encampment, more than 80 tents lined the grass as people busily wove through the area.

By around 8:30 p.m., a growing line of LAPD officers had formed between the encampment and the outside group of protesters, according to a CNN crew on the scene.

This aerial view shows police vehicles and a law enforcement mobile command post gathering at the FBI's Los Angeles field office parking lot in Loas Angeles, California.

80-year-old grandmother of 15 earns master’s degree, plans to finish memoirs

(Gray News) – A woman from Utah is proving that age doesn’t matter when it comes to learning.

At 80 years old, Beth Dayley was the eldest Spring 2024 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University.

She’s a mother of five, grandmother of 15, and great-grandmother of six.

Dayley traveled with one of her daughters to New Hampshire last weekend to cross the stage and receive her diploma after earning a master’s degree in creative writing.

“I’m very excited,” she said. “This is one of the things on my bucket list.”

As a military wife and lifelong learner, Dayley earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in her 40s while her family was stationed in Italy.

She passed her love of learning on to her family and often took her grandchildren on special trips to celebrate their academic achievements.

When her grandchildren were old enough to go to college, Dayley sent them each $100 a month and told them to use it to do something fun.

“Because it is a journey going to college and often it’s financially difficult,” Dayley said. “But I’m hoping they can enjoy it and have a little fun while they’re learning.”

Dayley said her grandchildren and children were very supportive of her going back to school and thought it was exciting she was earning her master’s degree.

“School is very important to me. I think it’s important that I keep learning and keep my mind fresh,” she said.

Now, she hopes her master’s degree will keep her mind sharp as she finishes her memoirs.

FAQs & Helpful Information

(1) where can i find directions to unh (2) where should i park.

Due to traffic on campus and congestion in parking lots, we strongly encourage planning for an extra 20 minutes more than the estimated GPS travel time to campus. We recommend arriving no later than 8:45 A.M. This will allow adequate time for parking, walking to venue, getting materials, and ample time to plan your day. Please follow the specific directions to enter campus via Route 155A instead of coming through downtown Durham. This route will align you both with our wayfinding signage and volunteers. Please refer to the campus parking map for lot locations and shuttle information.

Download A Campus Parking Map

Use the map for driving directions from your location. We recommend using the exit at Route 155A to access parking easily and following the instructions to campus below.

  • Exit at Route 155A and turn towards Durham (the 3rd exit that references "Durham", if coming from Route 4).
  • Follow 155A past a short stretch of fields to continue to the UNH campus.
  • At the traffic circle, take the third exit onto North Drive and continue for 0.1 miles.
  • Turn right onto Sage Way and continue for 0.2 miles.
  • At the stop sign, turn left onto Gable Way. The parking lot will be on your right.

Use the map for driving directions from your location. We recommend using the exit at Route 155A to access parking easily and following the instructions to campus below.

  • Continue onto Main Street towards Downtown Durham.
  • At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on Main Street.
  • Proceed down Main Street for 0.5 miles.
  • Turn left onto Edgewood Road.
  • Proceed straight on Edgewood Road for .02 miles.
  • Turn left onto Strafford Ave.
  • D-Lot will be on the left.

  • Exit at Route 155A and turn towards Durham (3rd exit that references "Durham", if coming from Route 4).
  • Follow 155A past a short stretch of field to the UNH campus.
  • At the traffic circle, take the 2 nd exit to continue on Main Street.
  • Take a right at the traffic lights onto College Road.
  • Continue down College Road until it becomes McDaniel Drive, approximately 0.6 miles.
  • B-Lot will be on your left.

ADDITIONAL DISABILITY-RELATED PARKING INFORMATION

Those using devices to aid in temporary mobility issues (ie. crutches, scooters, canes etc.) may be granted access without a disability placard. Please note, H Lot is the section behind Edgewood Visitor Lot. Accessible parking is available in both lots in any space. These lots provide the easiest entrance access to the Hamel Recreation Center where check-in will occur and the first session of the day.

  • Edgewood Visitor Lot and H-Lot will be on the left.

How do I know where to go for the academic sessions?

Download the UNH Mobile App from the Apple App Store or Google Play   to access all the session details and information for the day .  Can’t download the app? Speak to a staff member who can share the session locations with you.

How do I use the mobile app with the printed overall schedule I’ll receive at check-in?

Refer to your printed overall schedule or the open house confirmation email received the week of open house, for the time and location of your designated lunch, resource fair and guided general campus tour. Those who opted out of a tour will have a specific agenda to follow as well.

This selection determined the remaining schedule for the day after the conclusion of the academic sessions. The mobile app includes all the details for sessions offered during open house. Read the section at the top of the page to learn more.

How early should I arrive to make it on time for the welcome?

It will be a busy day on campus, so we recommend building an additional 20 minutes into your estimated GPS travel time to allow for navigating campus and parking once you arrive at UNH. Arriving 30 minutes prior to the start time will give you plenty of time to make your way across campus, pick up materials and plan your day.

What will happen if I arrive late?

Since each session is scheduled for a specific time, we recommend previewing the agenda and planning your day, so you don’t miss out on what you most want to see.

Do all sessions happen in one building?

The Open House program will take place at a variety of locations across campus as we share the best of UNH with you. The location of each session is listed in the agenda. Wear comfortable shoes to make the most of campus on foot.  Should you require accessibility accommodations, please contact our office at least two weeks before the event. Learn more here .  A limited quantity of wheelchairs are available for guests to borrow until 4 p.m. on the day of the program. Please speak to an admissions staff member for more information.

An access van providing on-campus transportation is available for those with temporary or permanent mobility impairments by calling (603) 862-2328 between 8am-4pm.

What should I bring to Open House?

We recommend bringing a water bottle to use at any of our hydration stations across campus and your favorite note-taking materials. There will be a lot of great photo opportunities throughout your day at UNH, so you might also want to bring your smart phone or camera to document every memorable moment.

How do you navigate Open House to make the most of its many sessions? Is it possible to experience everything?

We suggest planning your day around your priority academic sessions. Open House is the only event in the fall that gives you access to representatives from all undergraduate majors. Interested in more than one academic program? This is your Open House, so feel free to attend as many academic sessions as you can fit into your schedule. To learn more about student life, we recommend attending the welcome panel, registering for a general guided campus tour, or asking questions at the resource fair. You may not have time to do everything, so choose what is most important to you. We are happy to welcome you back to UNH for a campus tour or admissions information session , which are offered throughout the year.

How large is this Open House?

Within each cohort (8:15 A.M. or 10 A.M. start) we anticipate approximately 1200 people attending. To reduce crowd density throughout campus, we encourage visitors to follow the timing of the sessions offered for their cohort. After the “University Welcome Panel” kick-off, the flexibility of this year’s Open House means there will be a variety of small-group (20 attendees or less) and large-group (60 attendees or more) sessions around specific academic and student life interests. Some of our Open House events, like the Resource Fair and Residence Hall Open Doors, are designed so that you can stop by as fits your schedule.

Can I attend more than one academic session?

Open house is a great opportunity to learn about our 100+ academic programs, since it’s the only fall event where there are representatives for every undergraduate major. In the mobile app, read the description of the academic session(s) of interest to see if it is drop-in (come and go as you please) or if it is more structured (includes an information session and/or facility tour).  There are sessions that are more formatted but please feel comfortable to go to a session even if it has already started. Multiple sessions you want to attend occurring at the same time? We recommend having your guest(s) attend a session for you and take notes while you attend a different one. Prioritize attending the session(s) that are most important to you.

Can I see a residence hall room?

A residence hall room will be shown as part of the General Guided Campus Tour. In addition, there will be a sample of residence halls open as part of the overall open house agenda. The halls available as part of the “open residence hall” section of the day will be a different hall than what is shown as part of the General Guided Campus Tour. The open residence halls will be small, medium, and large halls.

Residential Life and Housing staff will be available at the resource fair as well as in the Residence Halls open as part of Open House. Learn more about residence halls  here .

Will food be provided? Where can I buy a snack?

Lunch in the dining hall is available for purchase at a discounted price of $10 per person. Tickets are available for purchase online until 2pm on October 21st. Tickets purchased for dining hall lunch are redeemable during the open house date only. Tickets sold at the dining hall entrance will be $13.25 plus tax, per person.

Available on the day of Open House only, grab-and-go lunch options will be available for purchase from food vendors on Thompson Hall (clock tower) lawn on Main Street.

There are additional fast casual dining options across campus and numerous  restaurants and coffee shops in downtown Durham, just a five-minute walk from campus.

Will I be able to meet with coaches or student organizations?

We encourage you to walk through the resource fair to meet with representatives from some of our student organizations. Since we have more than 200 clubs at UNH, not all of them will be able to attend Open House. Interested in a student organization that’s not at Open House? Be sure to stop by the resource fair table for the Memorial Union Building – UNH’s student union, also called the ‘MUB’ – where student life representatives will be able to answer any questions you may have about getting involved . Athletic coaches will not be at Open House, but we invite you to learn more about UNH’s D1 athletic teams and proud Wildcat traditions on our website .

I have a question I would like answered by a staff member

UNH staff will be wearing orange lanyards at Open House so they’re easy to spot. They are here for you, so please do not hesitate to ask any questions you have throughout the event. You will also see blue information tents across campus,  where you can find UNH admissions counselors and event resources.   The Smith Hall and Memorial Union Building tents will be open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The other information tent in the academic core area will be open from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

I lost something while on campus. Do you have a lost and found?

Please go to the Smith Hall information tent to claim any lost items. Smith Hall is located at the corner of Main Street and Garrison Avenue.

Smith Hall

UNH’s flagship Durham campus. Fall in the air. Possibility in every direction. If you drew a diagonal line from Boston, Massachusetts to the White Mountains, we’d be in the middle — just an hour from one of the country’s most vibrant cities and most spectacular mountain ranges. We also happen to be right next to the Atlantic Ocean (they call our region of the state the seacoast for a reason).

UNH campus

Why have a more open Open House? Because you fit a lot into your weekends. Because you want to connect and not just listen. Because one-date-doesn’t-fit-all. Because you want to immerse yourself in life at UNH and not just attend an event. Because you shouldn’t have to miss out on Open House because you’re playing a big soccer game/volunteering/competing in a debate tournament/starring in your school’s fall play/visiting your grandparents. Because this isn’t just another fall. It’s the season for limitless possibilities.

Description

Southern New Hampshire University is a team of innovators. World changers. Individuals who believe in progress with purpose. Since 1932, our people-centered strategy has defined us — and helped us grow a team that now serves over 180,000 learners worldwide.

Our mission to transform lives is made possible by talented people who bring diverse industry experience, backgrounds and skills to the university. And today, we're ready to expand our reach. All we need is you.

Make an impact — from near or far

We currently have remote adjunct opportunities available in all US States, with the exception of California.

The opportunity

Southern New Hampshire University is looking for adjunct faculty to teach in our Nursing program. You will provide high-quality academic experiences and support students as they work toward their educational goals. Online faculty members work collaboratively in a supportive academic environment, partnering with student advising and the academic team to ensure that each student has support and resources they need to be successful.

As an adjunct in the online nursing program, you'll teach students critical skills and competencies, including evidence-based care, health promotion, disease prevention and leveraging technology to enhance their clinical and professional development.

What you'll do:

  • Provide a high level of student outreach and connect with students, academic advisors and team leaders on a frequent basis to ensure student success
  • Engage with students, offering an increased presence in the classroom
  • Provide substantial student feedback and offer a quick turnaround on grades

What we're looking for:

  • Doctorate in Nursing; can be DNP, EdD, or PhD.
  • Masters of Science in Nursing required
  • Registered Nurse license required; unencumbered, multi-state license from a Compact State.
  • 5+ years of professional experience required in the designated specialty area
  • 2+ years of experience teaching online

Compensation:

The standard compensation for most courses is $2,200 per 8-week undergraduate course, and $2,500 per 10-week graduate course. Nursing has a separate compensation structure. Undergraduate and graduate adjuncts are paid bi-weekly and are considered W-2 employees of Southern NH University.

We believe real innovation comes from inclusion - where different experiences, perspectives and talents are celebrated. So if you're wondering whether SNHU is right for you, take the leap and apply. You might be just the person we're looking for.

Exceptional benefits (because you’re exceptional)

You’re the whole package. Your benefits should be, too. As an employee at SNHU, you'll get:

Employer-funded retirement

Free tuition program

Professional development opportunities

Expect the unexpected

As a university, it’s no surprise we employ many talented academics. What you may not know is that SNHU isn’t solely made up of folks with higher ed experience. Not even close.
