Evgenia from Travel the Greek Way at Nemea, Greece in June

As I live in Athens and I make a lot of short trips, I believe that June is one of the best summer months to travel around Greece . I always get better deals with the hotels, I find restaurant tables with great sea views without having to wait for hours for a free table and I get to be served reasonably fast.

The beaches are super clean and I can find a quiet spot to enjoy my book which is close to impossible in July and even more in August. The only long weekend that can be busier in Greece in June, is the Greek Holiday of the Holy Spirit (Monday, June 24th, 2024). A lot of Greeks go away to the nearby islands and hotels get fast fully booked.

Weather in Greece in June

Greece in June, Elia Beach Mykonos

The warm, and (mostly) sunny weather in Greece is between mid-May and early October with the hottest months being July and August. The average temperature in Greece in June can be slightly different depending on which part of the country you are visiting. In general terms, the weather is:

  • between 17 C to 29 C (62-84 F) in the north and close to Thessaloniki
  • between 17 C to 28 C (62-82 F) in the Ionian Islands (west)
  • between 19 C to 31 C in Athens (66-87 F)
  • between 19 C to 30 C in (66-86 F) Cyclades , Rhodes, and Crete

Greece in June, Skopelos island

As for rain days, there are going to be on average 1 to 5 possible rain days during June in Greece, depending on where you are. Ionian islands and the north of Greece tend to have more rain than Athens, Peloponnese, Crete, and Cyclades in southern Greece.

Swimming in June

Seaside summer swimming in Corinth beach

Generally speaking, the sea is always a bit warmer than the air temperature. Another thing that you have to keep in mind is that smaller bays that face the south are much warmer than the beaches that face the open sea or the north.

Agios Ioannis in Pelion , Papa Nero beach

A good example of that is the Pelion Peninsula . In June, the east side of Pelion facing the Aegean Sea will be much cooler than the protected bay of Pagasitikos. Cooler waters also have the Ionian islands and the northern Aegean islands such as Lesvos and Chios .

From mid-June onwards, the sea will be great for swimming and spending time on the beach, wherever you go.

Where to Go in Greece in June

Greece in June, Seasons in Greece

For the majority of first-time visitors, June is a perfect summer month to visit any of the Greek islands because:

  • It is pretty warm and pleasant to explore Greece, swim, and visit the archaeological sites without the scorching temperatures of July and August
  • It is less crowded, with fewer people visiting Greece as the majority of Europeans (as schools are still open in most of Europe), Greeks included, are going on vacation in July and mostly in August!

Epidavros performance

  • There are many events, festivals, and local religious feasts that you can attend and get a taste of a local flare! The world-famous Athens Festival which begins in June features plenty of theater, music, and dance performances in stunning venues like the Acropolis of Athens, and Epidaurus Theater in the Peloponnese

The most important archaeological and historical monuments that you should visit in mainland Greece are:

  • Epidaurus , Mycenae , Ancient Corinth , Ancient Messene, Epikourios Apollo , Nestor’s Palace , and Ancient Olympia in the Peloponnese

Do you Need Layers of Clothing in June?

During the day, you will only need summer clothes. However, in mountainous areas and islands, you should bring with you a couple of warmer clothes such as a light jacket or even a light fleece. It can get chillier during the evening in the islands as they are mostly quite windy.

There will be plenty of choices to book from, hotels, apartments, studios, or villas as well as some hostels and camping if you are the more adventurous type. Generally speaking, the cost for hotels will be slightly less than you will be asked to pay for July, August, and September.

When is Best to Visit Greece?

Greece in June, hiker in Amorgos island

As a resident of Greece, I’m often asked when is the best time to visit Greece. My answer is always the same: it depends on what you want to experience in this beautiful country. Looking for summer vacations? June to October is the perfect time to visit. If hiking is your passion, then October to May is the ideal period to explore Greece’s stunning hiking trails.

Greece has 4 distinct seasons with considerable temperature differences if you are in Thessaloniki in the north or Crete in the south. The islands do not close as they have permanent residents but they are at their liveliest between May and September .

Winter is great in Greece for hiking, ski resorts, and exploring archaeological sites.

Crete • Best Place for Families with Children

Greece is a splendid Mediterranean country to bring your entire family and Crete offers experiences that will satisfy the travel appetites of adults and children on tours combining Athens, Santorini, and Crete . Beyond the beaches, history tours of the Minoan Palace of Knossos, for example, provide adventures parents look forward to and the archeological site’s ruins inspire the imaginations of playful children.

The Peloponnese • Best Place to Avoid the Crowds

The Peloponnese peninsula is one of the best-kept Greece secrets for travelers hoping to explore the less-popular Mediterranean regions. That is not to say the peninsula is any less beautiful. In fact, the immense landscapes are wild and diverse, the beaches are pristine and picturesque, and the rural towns are authentic and traditional. The region is an enchanting place where parents and children can experience the top 8 things to do in the Peloponnese with family .

Corfu • Best Place for Couples or Honeymooners

While Santorini is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece, Corfu is a dreamy alternative that offers intimate pleasure along a sparkling coastline that experiences fewer tourists. For these reasons, you can sink into each other’s arms on far-flung shores, swim in the crystal-clear waters that ebb and flow with the tides, and visit charming museums that reflect years of Grecian history and culture for a memorable escape in the summer month of June.

Greece’s slice of Mediterranean paradise encompasses a vast collection of immaculate islands peppering the Aegean and Ionian seas, the Saronic Gulf, and beyond. Visit the Temple of Poseidon at Sunset

The Temple of Poseidon of Cape Sounion will invite you to explore ancient Greek history dating back to 444BC. The significant ruin site has been the subject of fables and mythical stories honoring the great sea god that has inspired pop-cultural cinema and modern tales. The temple is particularly magnificent at sunset, when the fading sun paints the sea and sky in orange, yellow, and pink hues.

Make Way for Greek Monasteries

Greek monasteries are jaw-dropping historical structures that riddle the cities, towns, villages, and coastal getaways throughout the country. The Great Meteoron Holy Monastery, in one of the best cities in mainland Greece , perches on the perilous peaks of a rocky outcrop, the Panagia Spiliani Monastery in Samos extends over cliffs into a cave, and the Agia Triada Tzagaroli Monastery of Aegina is an architectural marvel looming over the town.

The weather in Greece in June

The weather in Greece in June is warm and sunny. It is hot enough for pleasant swimming and sunbathing, but not extremely hot. The temperatures hover between 21 °C and 31 °C, but they can reach 33 °C in southern Greece and Crete. The chance of rain is extremely low in October with the exception of the Ionian islands and western Greece, where rainfall is common in June. The water starts warming up and gets warmer towards the end of the month, but it is still cold on islands with deep waters, like Crete, Corfu , and Amorgos. If you want to swim in warmer and shallow waters in June, opt for Greek islands like Naxos, Paros , Koufonisia, and Rhodes .

Best Greek Islands to visit in June

  • Mykonos (fewer crowds, best time to enjoy the beaches, sunny enough for sunbathing, wild beach parties, crazy nightlife, all bars and clubs are open, no strong Meltemi winds)
  • Santorini (the perfect month for a honeymoon, warm weather, no crazy August crowds, a good time for wine tours and volcano cruises, pleasant swimming at volcanic beaches)
  • Ios (the best month for students and youngsters, many parties, vivid nightlife, nature exploration, great time for swimming and sunbathing)
  • Crete (a good month for sightseeing, less crowded archeological sites, wonderful beaches, thinner crowds, warm and sunny weather)
  • Naxos (quiet beaches, swimming, water sports, nature exploration & outdoor activities, fewer crowds, good time for island hopping to the Cyclades)
  • Tinos (serene ambiance, authentic Cycladic beauty, unspoiled beaches, water sports, the Church of Panagia Evangelistria without the crazy August crowds, delicious food)

Average temperatures in Greece in June

The cost of a holiday to greece in june.

June marks the beginning of the tourist season in Greece, so hotel rates start rising and flights/ferry connections become more frequent. Hotel discounts and bargains vanish as the month progresses, so if you want to book a discounted package opt for the beginning of June or the end of May.

Santorini has a longer tourist season than the rest of the Greek islands, which means that it’s more expensive and crowded from June until October compared to other islands. However, accommodation on most islands and mainland destinations is cheaper in early June.

Types vacations in Greece in June

In June, you can finally plan a beach holiday in Greece! It is sunny, hot, the water temperature is perfect for swimming, and the beaches turn into sunbathing heavens. The Greek islands are full of fantastic beaches for every taste: shingle, sandy, cosmopolitan, secluded, you name it! The best way to discover different islands (and their beaches) is to book an island-hopping trip to Greece . This way, you’ll get to visit more than one island and explore them at your leisure, without dedicating your entire trip to one place.

Thanks to the sunny weather and the lack of excessive crowds, June is also a very good month for a family holiday in Greece . If you want to take advantage of the still not very busy islands and score some very good hotel deals, opt for the first half of the month.

What’s more, June is an ideal month to sail in Greece . The strong Meltemi winds aren’t blowing yet in the Aegean, so the weather conditions are good for sailing around the Cyclades. The Saronic islands are also a great sailing destination this time of the year, but we suggest that you avoid the Ionian islands in June, as there are frequent rainfalls at the beginning of summer.

Finally, June is one of the best months for a honeymoon in Greece . June is the start of peak season, so popular honeymoon destinations, like Santorini, Crete, and Mykonos, aren’t overcrowded -particularly in the first half of June. The weather is warm, so you’ll be able to enjoy the beaches, go on romantic cruises, savor candlelit dinners under the stars, and do outdoor activities with your significant other!

June events

June is the first summer month, which means that the season of the Greek religious feasts (panigiri) begins. From June onwards religious feasts take place every week in different towns and islands, so we highly recommend that you go to at least one. Panigiri feasts include folk music and dancing, local delicacies, open-air markets, and traditional customs, so it’s the perfect opportunity for you to be introduced to Greek culture.

Other events that take place in Greece in June are Miaoulia Festival in Hydra, Athens Epidaurus Open-Air Festival, European Music Day, Navy Week, Rockwave Festival and Eject Festival in Athens, and Aegean Festival in Skiathos.

Useful tips for traveling to Greece in June

  • The Holy Spirit Day in the middle of June is a public holiday, so some businesses may not be operating.
  • If you want to save some money on your holiday to Greece, opt for early June instead of late June. At the beginning of the month, hotels may still be offering shoulder season prices or discounted packages.
  • The water temperature on islands with deep waters is still low for swimming in June. If you want to enjoy pleasant swimming, opt for an island with shallow waters, like Paros and Naxos.
  • If you want to go on a sailing vacation in June, avoid the Ionian islands, as rainfalls are frequent at the beginning of summer.

Pros & Cons of traveling to Greece in June

  • Sunny and hot weather
  • The water temperature is finally high enough for swimming
  • The islands are less busy than in July-August
  • The hotels are cheaper at the beginning of the month
  • Best time for a honeymoon, a sailing trip and a beach holiday
  • Good time for sightseeing -less crowded archaeological sites
  • From mid-June onwards, the islands get more crowded
  • Shoulder season prices and bargains disappear
  • The water temperature on some islands is still low for swimming
  • There are not as many parties as in July and August

Greece in June: Frequently Asked Questions

Is june a cheap month to visit greece, how many days in greece is enough, what is the cheapest time to go to greece, what is the rainy season in greece, what is the best time to go to santorini, to sum up….

June is the beginning of summer and peak season in Greece! The temperatures start rising, the water is finally warm enough for swimming, and the sun is shining. But, accommodation gets more expensive. At the end of the month, bargains and discounted travel packages have disappeared and crowds have already filled the islands. So, our suggestion is to opt for the first or second week of June, so that you can enjoy the islands without excessive crowds and take advantage of shoulder season (kind of) prices.

However, the tourist season in Santorini is longer than on most other Greek islands. Many businesses and most restaurants open before Greek Easter , which is in April or May. While this is the shoulder season for most of Greece, Santorini is already relatively busy then.

By June, you will find that Santorini is buzzing. Yet, the first summer month is not as crowded as July and August. You will meet plenty of other travelers, but it’s a better time to visit Santorini than the peak season.

Accommodation prices in June can be significantly lower than in August, which is the busiest month. You will find that staying on the east side of the island can be very affordable, with hotels / rooms starting at around 40-50 euro a night.

What to do in Santorini island in June

Here are some things you can do in June in Santorini.

Enjoy the sunny weather on a sailing trip

One of the most popular things to do in Santorini is to take a sailing trip. There are many different types of boat tours and cruises, so you can find something suitable for all budgets.

Some morning tours go to the volcano , taking you to Nea Kameni islet, where you can walk on the impressive caldera. This is a fantastic experience, though you might want to avoid on a very hot day.

Santorini in June - Take a sailing trip to the famous volcano

Other sailing trips include sailing along the colourful coast. You will see many of Santorini’s famous beaches, like the Red Beach or the White Beach, and get a chance to snorkel.

Or you can choose a relaxed evening sailing trip , where you will enjoy the iconic sunset from the boat, with a meal and drinks.

Most trips are between 3-5 hours, and provide you with amazing views of the volcano, Thirassia island and the blue Aegean Sea.

Visit the picturesque towns and villages

The famous Cycladic island has several pretty towns and villages with the iconic white-washed houses and blue-domed churches.

Fira is the capital and largest town, while Oia is the famous sunset spot as well as a popular resort. Both these towns are on the west side of the island, overlooking the volcano.

Santorini weather June - Sunny and hot

The coastal towns in Santorini are located on the east coast. The three main beach resorts are Kamari , Perissa and Perivolos . They all offer plenty of tourist facilities, including tavernas , cafes, bars, hotels, often with a swimming pool, and watersports.

Other traditional villages in Santorini include the inland Emporeio , Messaria , Megalochori and Pyrgos . Here, you can see the traditional architecture from hundreds of years ago.

If you want to visit all the villages, it’s much easier to rent a car or quad. Parking can be an issue, especially if you are going to Oia around sunset time.

Here is some more information and tips about hiring a car in Greece:

Hike from Fira to Oia Santorini

The hike from Fira to Oia was my favourite activity on the island. It’s a 10 km (6.2 mile) hike, where you get magnificent views of the caldera.

On your way, you will pass by the popular resorts of Firostefani and Imerovigli. You should also make a small detour to the iconic Skaros rock, a rocky outcrop offering beautiful views of the Aegean Sea.

Hiking from Fira to Oia in Santorini in June

Tip: you can either do the hike early in the morning, or start in the evening, and get to Oia for the famous Santorini sunset.

Here is some more information on how to hike from Fira to Oia .

Enjoy the famous Santorini sunset

Oia is considered the best place for sunset views in Santorini. Yet, there are many more places on the west side of the island to enjoy the iconic Santorini sunsets.

Many restaurants and cafe-bars in Fira, the capital, have a view to the caldera. If this feels too busy, you can walk along the hiking path, and stop somewhere along the way. Firostefani and Imerovigli both offer cool sunset views.

Sunset in Santorini Greece

The church under Skaros Rock, and Akrotiri Lighthouse, are both good places if you want to enjoy the sunset away from the masses. Just don’t expect to be on your own – it’s Santorini after all!

If you are travelling in June, you will enjoy long daytime hours. Sunrise is at 6 am, and the famous Santorini sunset is around 20.40 – 20.50!

Visit the ancient site of Akrotiri

Santorini has a very long history, which goes back to the Neolithic times. Some of the earliest ruins that have been discovered on the island are in the ancient site of Akrotiri.

A volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC completely destroyed the settlement. Like Pompeii in Italy, Akrotiri was covered by lava, volcanic ashes and debris, which helped preserve the buildings.

The archaeological site of Akrotiri in Santorini

Parts of the frescoes on the walls have survived, and you can see them in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

You can visit the site on your own, or maybe book a  tour of Ancient Akrotiri with a licensed guide , where you can learn more about the island’s history.

Enjoy the wines of Santorini

Santorini is famous for its excellent wines. The volcanic soil and the dry climate help produce unique grape varieties. Some of the wines produced in Santorini, like Assyrtiko or Vinsanto, are among the best wines in Greece.

Take a wine tasting tour in Santorini Greece

You will find the local wines, along with great food, in many restaurants and tavernas in Santorini. Or you can visit one or two of the wineries on the island, and have a taste of their wine production.

While it’s easy to go wine tasting independently, many visitors prefer to take a tour, and learn more about what makes Santorini’s wines so special. This is one of the best winery tours in Santorini – check it out.

How to get to Santorini

Santorini belongs to the Cyclades group of islands. It is located in the Aegean Sea, to the east of mainland Greece.

Santorini has an international airport. In June, you will find direct flights from many European cities, such as London, Paris or Frankfurt. There are also domestic flights from Athens, taking just under an hour.

There are many flights to Santorini in June

If you decide to fly, book your flights as early as possible, as last-minute prices tend to be quite high. Ferry ticket prices are the same even if you book them last minute, but they sometimes sell out, so it’s best to book them in advance.

You can also take a ferry from Piraeus port in Athens. The fastest ferry takes about 5 hours. You can compare routes and buy your ferry tickets on Ferryscanner .

Taking a ferry to Santorini Greece

Many people want to combine Santorini with other nearby Greek islands . The best way to do this is by ferry, as most Greek islands don’t have an airport.

Even if they do, there are very few direct flights between the islands. You’d most likely have to connect through the Athens International Airport.

2 thoughts on “Santorini In June – How To Enjoy Your Greek Vacation In Santorini”

Hello Vanessa, Thank you for the post I found it useful. I’d like to ask a quick question. My wedding ceremony will be on the 22nd July in Andromeda Villas, Santorini. I was wondering whether I need to bring jackets for regular evenings and the wedding night. Would the island be windy enough to require jackets?

First of all, congratulations on your wedding, and have a great time! While I do hope you get some warm and calm evenings, I would personally bring a light jacket or shawl / pashmina just in case… they may also come handy in any spaces with strong A/C. Then again, I’m Greek, so you are probably less likely to need them than me! Enjoy your time!

The weather in Greece in June is warm enough for a proper beach vacation. The country sees very little rain during this time of year, the skies are a beautiful blue and you can enjoy long, bright days. If you visit Greece at the beginning of the month, you are unlikely to encounter massive crowds, since the peak summer rush starts around the end of the month.

Why visit greece in june.

Travel image of retro scooter in old greek town

June is one of the most popular months to visit Greece . Below are a few reasons why you should head to the country during this time of year.

  • Beach party: Greece’s heavenly beaches, like Navagio Beach located on the island of Zakynthos and Messina’s Voidokilia Beach, are at their most welcoming in June. There is not a hint of rain clouds in the sky and the weather is perfect for a dip in the ocean.
  • Island-hopping: One of the disadvantages of traveling to Greece in the middle of winter is that some of the top-rated islands are not easily accessible because ferry services are down. However, head for the country in June and you can discover stunning islands like Corfu , and Cephalonia.
  • Less footfall: If you head out to discover Greece in the first half of June, you will not encounter the full blast of the tourist rush, which starts in the last week of the month. Plus, you can also get discounts on hotels and airfares.
  • Road trip: Summer days are long in Greece, making June the perfect time for a multi-day road trip. Some top choices include the 215-kilometer road trip from Athens to Patras and an epic, 1,250-kilometre road trip from Athens to Olympia.
  • Festive delights: Traveling to Greece in June means that you get the chance to participate in some unique and exciting festivals. These include the Athens and Epidavros Open-Air Festival, which features plenty of theater, music, and dance performances in stunning venues like the Acropolis of Athens, and European Music Day, which is famous for its classical and orchestral music performances. Along with these, there is also the Miaoulia Festival, which takes place on the Saronic island of Hydra and sees a weekend full of parades, concerts, and dances.

Where to go and what to do

Traditional narrow streets with cute cafe bars in Greece

There are lots of exciting things to see and do in Greece in June. Exploring Athens is one of the first things to do for most travelers visiting the country and its highlights are worth discovering. Just in case you find it hot in the city during the daytime, opt for an evening tour instead. Get awed by the towering columns of the Parthenon and catch a play at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in the city’s acropolis. Visit the birthplace of democracy in Agora and feast your eyes on the world’s finest collection of Greek antiquities in Athens’ National Archaeological Museum.

Discover Delphi and its heritage sites, located some 160 kilometers outside the capital city, with June being an opportune time to do so. Delphi’s temple and romantic mountainside ruins will transport you to a long-forgotten past. The month of June is also ideal for island-hopping and among dozens of popular islands in the country, make sure to visit Santorini . Enjoy the sight of crescent cliffs rising more than 300 meters and a cluster of towns with whitewashed houses as you approach the island. While there, you might want to go on a catamaran cruise around the island, swim in the crystal-clear waters of Red Beach and White Beach, and enjoy sunset views from the top of a hill. This month also signals the start of the party season across the country and the island of Mykonos, with its pretty beaches, busy nightlife and a delightful maze of narrow streets is just the place to get in the groove.

What to bring

Europe Greece Santorini travel vacation

You will need a good pair of shoes for all the walking you will do while exploring Athens’ cultural treasures and shades to guard against the summer glare while island-hopping during your stay in Greece in June. Other than that light cotton or linen outfits will do the job.

8 of the Best Greek Destinations to Visit in June

Late spring-early summer is a fabulous time to visit greece, with warm weather and fewer tourists. here’s our guide to some of our favorite destinations..

By Greece Is Team, edited by Duncan Howitt-Marshall | June 1st, 2023

While there’s no bad time to visit Greece, in the first half of June you’re still ahead of the madding crowds of the high summer season (late June through early September). The weather is typically warm and sunny, with the very occasional light shower: ideal for sightseeing, exploring archaeological sites, and enjoying outdoor activities . But things will really start to hot up towards the end of month, so be sure to pack accordingly.

Another bonus with June is that the landscapes are still lush green and carpeted with colorful late springtime flowers . It’s also a good time for a relaxing beach holiday, being less crowded than July and August. Accommodation prices in many parts of the country are also more moderate.

Here’s our pick of some of our favorite mainland and island destinations for the month of June. Be sure to click on the links and check out our extended guides.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it will hopefully it will provide you with some inspiration.

Mani Peninsula

Wild, rugged terrain, serene villages, and remote beaches, all in the shadow of the majestic Mount Taygetos … This is Mani, the middle peninsula in the southern Peloponnese , the ideal destination for those looking to get off the beaten path.

Exploring this untamed corner of Greece requires a hearty appetite for walking – even more so driving – as the villages lie scattered about the peninsula . Nevertheless, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful landscapes. The Maniots themselves are hardy folk, notoriously hard-edged but fiercely loyal and hospitable. For our money, this is Greece at its most authentic.

Famed for its stone-built tower houses, serene villages, rugged terrain, and quaint sheltered harbors , the Mani Peninsula has actively shunned mass tourism, but is popular with holidaying families and couples from other parts of Greece in the summer months. A trip in June may be just the ticket to beat the crowds.

What to look out for: Porto Kagio , the southernmost natural harbor of mainland Greece, is the perfect place to enjoy an early evening meal next to the sea. Also, a boat ride to the Cave of Diros makes for a fabulous excursion.

Renowned for its crystal-clear waters, pint-sized Paxos is the largest island in the Paxi group in the Ionian Sea, a stone’s thrown from the south coast of Corfu. According to the ancient Greek myth, Paxos was a chunk of Corfu that the sea god Poseidon skewered with his trident and catapulted into the sea!

Green all over and clad with tall olive trees, the island is home to just three villages: Gaios , featuring stylish neoclassical buildings colored with faded burgundy and pale ochre, Loggos , halfway up the east coast, and Lakka , famed for its scenic horseshoe-shaped harbor. The pace of life on Paxos is much slower than its bigger and oftentimes more overcrowded neighbor, and its small size – just 16km in total length – means that this tranquil little corner of the Ionian Sea as  the ideal holiday destination for families .

The island is classified under Natura, the EU’s network of protected areas that offer havens to threatened species and habitats, making it a top choice for birdwatchers and nature lovers. And with its well-maintained network of walking paths criss-crossing across the island, late afternoon walks before dinner will reward you with sweeping vistas over the sea.

Top tip: Hire a boat from Loggos, load it up with food, water, hats, armbands, masks and snorkels and spend the day exploring the island’s sparkling coves and beaches . All are pebbled except for man-made Mongonisi, on the southern side, which is a family favorite.

Remaining on the western side of Greece, the picturesque coastal town of Parga in Epirus, with its colorful houses, narrow streets, and historical landmarks , is the perfect place for a June escape. It’s also within each reach of some of the country’s best beaches, including Syvota to the north. And whilst Parga may be on the mainland, it definitely has that “island vibe.”

Built amphitheatrically around the bay, in the shadow of a medieval hilltop castle , Parga has everything you could want from a relaxing vacation: long sandy beaches lapped by an emerald sea, a charming promenade to stroll along in the evenings, offering a wide selection of eateries to suit every taste. Italian pizzerias and trattorias are especially well represented here.

And there’s plenty more to do for those who like to stay active. Only 30km away, the River Acheron, known to the ancient Greeks as one of the five rivers of the underworld , is a fabulous place to explore and enjoy a picnic. Meanwhile in the opposite direction to the north, a beautiful coastal road takes you to  Syvota , another popular holiday destination where forested hills meet hidden coves with sandy beaches.

For history buffs: On its banks of the Acheron are the archaeological ruins of the “nekromanteion,” an ancient temple dedicated to necromancy, the practice of communicating with the dead. Built at an entrance to the underworld, this was where pilgrims from around the ancient Greek world would come to communicate with their departed loved ones.

Ah, Santorini, the jewel in the crown of the Cyclades. Where to begin? Well, it often tops the bill in various popularity polls and travel articles – “most beautiful sunset,” “most beautiful village,” “favorite honeymoon destination,” and so on. But the brutally honest truth is that unfettered tourism has been a real scourge for this most popular of Greek islands.

With record numbers of tourists estimated to be inbound this summer, beating the hoards in June may be an opportune time to see some of the island’s most iconic sites without the crowds. There are plenty of places to enjoy those breathtakingly beautiful views over the volcanic caldera – the sunset at Oia is spectacular – and a visit to one of the island’s many black-sand beaches, backed by dramatic cliffs (think Vlychada) , is an unforgettable experience.

Must try: Santorini is fast becoming a must-visit destination for wine aficionados . The island’s winemakers are exploiting the richness of the local varieties – most notably the Assyrtiko – to create quality wines, which have impressed oenophiles and picked up prizes and distinctions worldwide.

Tear up the standard list of must-dos and follow our alternative guide to Santorini instead.

Halkidiki is blessed with places of jaw-dropping natural beauty as stunning as they are diverse. The region’s unique geography, with its three peninsulas jutting out to form two sheltered gulfs , is conducive to local travel by boat and to coastal exploration, where visitors can discover locations ranging from exotic islets and endless sandy beaches washed by crystal-clear waters. What’s more, it’s a region scattered with Byzantine towers and other fortification works, as well as the ruins of ancient cities associated with the Macedonian kingdom of Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great .

The abundance of seafood in the region (including the celebrated mussels of Olympiada), as well as the local meat, the delicious cheeses, and the area’s famous green olives make it a superb destination for foodies .

Each peninsula has established its own personality. Kassandra , the westernmost, is chiefly known for its cosmopolitan feel, with Sani Marina and beach bars stealing the show, although it’s not without its pristine landscapes. Sithonia , the middle peninsula, while offering five-star and boutique hotels, is especially popular among nature-lovers on account of its many secluded beaches and its camping options. Lastly, the area north of Mount Athos in the easternmost part of Halkidiki, a region which includes the island of Ammouliani, is constantly upgrading its services to offer visitors unique experiences, such as the Aristotle Trail (the renowned Greek philosopher was born in the ancient city of Stagira, at the far eastern end of the peninsula), and trekking on Mount Holomon .

A taste of northern Greece: The cultivation of mussels has a long tradition in Halkidiki. The famous Olympiada variety , large and bursting with flavor, are guaranteed to be the most delicious you’ll every try. Packing more minerals and nutrients than just about any other food source on the planet (three times more iron than beef liver!), these bad boys are best enjoyed steamed with a drizzle of local wine or ouzo. Magic.

Elegant charm in a small package, the island Symi, located in the Dodecanese archipelago in the southeast corner of the Aegean, is a kaleidoscope of color. Famed for its 19th and early 20th century shipbuilding and sponge diving industries, the island grew prosperous; its former economic might reflected in the multi-colored neoclassical mansions at Gialos , the island’s port.

The island, a stone’s throw from Turkey, has a dedicated following, most notably among northern Europeans, providing a low-key alternative to other, busier islands of the Dodecanese such as Kos and Rhodes.

Boasting great beaches and traditional eateries, Symi is also home to some beautiful monasteries, most notably Panormiti Monastery , which houses a miraculous icon of the Archangel Michael (one of four in the Dodecanese). The monastery also has guest rooms. Three days there is as restful as a full month of vacation.

Don’t leave the island before trying the delicious bite-sized Symi shrimp , often pan-fried and served as a meze with a glass of ouzo. These little guys are so small and delicate, you can (and should) eat them whole: shells, tail, head, and all!

What to do: Take a boat trip around the island, where you’ll discover tiny bays that look like paintings, such as Ai-Giorgis Dysalonas , with its deep green waters and vertical rock face rising 300m from the beach.

Returning to the mainland, the region around Mount Pelion in southeast Thessaly is perhaps not the first place that comes to mind when considering a June vacation. But the great range of activities on offer, including hiking, canyoning, and extreme sports, is making this picturesque corner of Greece a popular choice for those in search of some serious adventure.

Combining mountain and sea , the long, sandy beaches of eastern and southern Pilio are often featured in travel magazines among the most beautiful on the mainland. In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion was the home of Chiron the centaur (half-man, half-horse), tutor of Achilles, and the scene of the infamous dispute between the goddesses Hera, Aphrodite and Athena that led to the Trojan War.

Densely forested, Pilio is known for its network of tree-lined footpaths, which were used by locals to navigate the area before the construction of roads. Mylopotamos is one of the most well-known beaches of Pelion; the large rock with its characteristic hole that divides the beach in two is the ideal selfie spot (head to Fakistra if you like wild landscapes and beaches without sun loungers).

Aside from the lush vegetation and natural beauty, the region is also known for its fairytale-like villages , containing many beautifully maintained stone-built mansions and Byzantine churches.

Historic railway: A wonderful way to see Pilio is via the “Moutzouris” steam train , which runs on a 60cm gauge track, one of the narrowest in the world. The train sets off from Ano Lechonia and heads to Milies in a 90 minute ride, stopping at various villages.

The island of Kea (or Tzia, as it is also referred to), lies in the northwestern part of the Cycades. What makes it particularly attractive is its proximity to Attica , making it the perfect early summer break from Athens. From the eastern port of Lavrio (about one hour from downtown Athens), the visitor only needs approximately an hour’s boat ride before hitting this little gem of a destination.

Despite being so close to the Athens, Kea has retained a sense of geographical detachment by remaining off the beaten track for many tourists.

As you approach the island, you’re greeted by its wild western slopes, the port of Korissia and, in the distance, Ioulida – the island’s capital (or Hora) . Pretty and low-key, it is among the most charming in the entire Cyclades. The town hall – designed by Ernst Ziller, the architect behind prominent buildings in Athens, Patras and other Greek cities between the late 19th centuries and early 20th centuries – is shaped amphitheatrically around an enormous rock and was constructed over the remains of a medieval castle.

Kea has a surprisingly varied landscape for a Cycladic island: oak forests; a few olive trees; rugged rocky slopes interspersed by almond groves and, scattered throughout, tasteful summer homes, many of which have been built by charismatic architects inspired by the simplicity of Kea’s traditional farmhouses built out of local stone.

The island’s coastline offers a wealth of beaches. Many visitors prefer the cosmopolitan beach at Koundouros , which has become a popular spot for holiday homes in recent years. For a more peaceful experience, head to nearby Koundouraki , or the succession of more remote, pebble beaches to the south.

Look out for: An old cobblestone pathway that links Ioulida to the village of Otzias leads to one of the island’s best-known attractions, an impressive stone sculpture of a lion . The sculpture, which marks the beginning of the path, is thought to have been carved in the early Archaic period, sometime between the end of the 7th and early 6th century BC.

T ravelling to Greece in June is one of the best decisions to make if you are not a fan of extremely hot weather or crowds. There are, however, two distinct periods within June, early and late.

The latter is the one when everything starts to get a bit busier and pricy as summer starts to really kick in. Early June is still considered off-season so you are more likely to score a good deal on accommodation and wander around the streets of Mykonos and Santorini while experiencing a quieter version of these beloved islands.

visit greece in june

While the weather is generally good throughout the whole month of June anywhere you are in Greece, it is still preferable to be in the south of the country, where the sun arrives a little bit earlier, leaves a bit later and the water is warmer than in some of the spots up north.

There are over 200 islands to enjoy in the Cyclades and of course, Crete , but maybe a more suitable option for most would be the Peloponnese peninsula.

Where is that?

When you think of Greece, tucked away in between Italy and Turkey, there are a few key spots that come to mind. The countless dots that are spread around the Aegean Sea, the three fingers up the North end that make up the Halkidiki peninsula and the giant palm that is the Peloponnese.

What is there to see?

The Peloponnese peninsula is technically an island, even though you would not hear anybody refer to is as such.

The peninsula has been separated by the mainland since 1893 when the Corinth Canal started its operation. Nowadays, there are bridges that connect the two pieces of land both from above and underwater and you will most likely be travelling on one of them as you drive or train from Athens.

Peloponnese Historically

Between 1600 BC and 1100 BC this was the place where the Mycenaean civilization flourished. Even if you are not a history enthusiast, there are many things you can now enjoy due to the innovations of those that came before.

You can visit the archaeological site of Mycenae or Mikines and walk through the Lion Gate. The only monument of the Greek Bronze Age that survives.

There is so much to see and do depending on the type of travel you had in mind. From the charming little towns of Nafplion and Aigio to the history of Corinth and Sparta, the options are endless.

Dozens of beaches and castles waiting to be explored and unique flavours to be tasted.

Athens Epidavros Festival

This is an annual festival that takes place in Athens and Epidaurus between May and October.

For theatre lovers, it is a haven of cultural and musical events. It is also a great opportunity to see a play at the ancient Epidaurus theatre. It can accommodate more than 13,000 people and the acoustics are spectacular. Whether you are sitting in the front or the back, you will be able to hear everything that is being said and that is without fancy modern amplifiers.

While this is a trying time for professionals in the entertainment industry, this involuntary hiatus has given the Athens Epidaurus Festival a chance to dramatically rebrand, with some creative and exciting new approaches. The festival aims to bring people the joy created by live art, emphasizing many of Greece’s incredibly talented artists as well as international artists. While they plan to go ahead this year, if they are unable to, they will revert to an online version of the festival instead. You can find tickets, free workshops and live performances on their website.

Athens Rockwave Festival

Another annual festival and one of the biggest and most impressive in Greece, with a rich history and impressive lineups. (the festival for 2021 was recently cancelled but the 2022 festival is set to commence the 21 July).

You will find it between June and July, since dates can vary, outside of Athens in Malakasa.

Nemean Games

Some may recognize the name from the stories of Hercules when he was tasked to slay the Lion of Nemea with his bare hands. In ancient times, participants competed in foot races, wrestling, and horse racing, all in the nude, for a chance to win a wreath of wild celery, bestowing honour on the recipient and their city.

Nowadays, the Modern Nemean Games have also started taking place every 4 years. Competing in the nude would probably not be acceptable but you can still receive crowns made out of palm branches and wild celery.

June is generally a very pleasant month, wherever you travel within Greece. But it can start to get quite hot around mid to late June. Sunhats, sunscreen and lots of water are always recommended in order to stay hydrated and be able to enjoy your holidays for longer.

Bring a light jacket and closed shoes if you are considering hiking or heading up to the mountains overnight.

These Are the Best Times to Visit Greece

Anthony Grant

Finally ready for that dream trip to Greece ? With a coastline longer than the United Kingdom's and thousands of islands, the country is a great place to visit any time of year. But absent a last-minute flight deal (and they do come up, though nonstop options from the US are still limited), planning ahead is the way to go in order to make the most of your time in Greece.

The urban attractions of Athens thrum at full tilt all year long, while most Greek islands are at their best once winter has left the picture. Whether it's sultry Mediterranean breezes you seek or the cheapest time to book that hotel room with a sea view in Mykonos, consider this your essential guide to planning a perfect trip to Greece.

The Best Weather in Greece

visit greece in june

Generally, the best weather in Greece is what you'll experience in May, June and September. Plenty of sunny days that aren't too hot make May an ideal time for long, leisurely walks in Athens. By June, the beaches of the Aegean islands are warm enough for swimming and popular islands like Mykonos aren't crowded yet.

July is when things get toasty and sometimes uncomfortably humid in Athens, and the city is crowded with tourists then, too. August, naturally, means great beach weather, and if you like your big cities to yourself then it's also a fine time for Athens, as most Athenians ditch the capital.

September has lots of advantages (namely: fewer tourists), but the days are still long and warm and better yet, it's less humid than in July and August. In Crete, the southernmost Greek island, you can go swimming well into October.

The Best Times to Visit Cities in Greece

The two biggest cities in Greece are the capital, Athens , and Thessaloniki. Both are destinations in their own right and for culture vultures there is really no bad time to go. In the peak summer season, major attractions in Athens such as the Acropolis Museum are more crowded than in wintertime, when on many days you'll have even iconic places like the Acropolis largely to yourself. Winter in Athens is also a great time to check out lesser-known museums, tune up your Instagram or warm up in a luxe Turkish bath .

visit greece in june

Generally speaking, think of April to June as the ideal times to explore Athens and other Greek cities including historic Nafplio. Thessaloniki is a vibrant city with a wealth of cultural attractions, but in the height of summer it gets so humid they actually have public fans in places to keep the air circulating.

Choose shoulder season months like October and May for an optimal experience there. Most island towns are empty of tourists from November until around the time of Greek Easter, but the main town in Corfu and the Cretan cities like Heraklion are up and running all year long.

When to Visit Greece for Events

From religious holidays to cultural festivals, there are plenty of events worth attending throughout the year.

Spring Events

Greek Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday in the Greek calendar by far. In 2019, Greek Easter falls on Sunday, April 28, but festivities actually begin the week prior on the Saturday of Lazarus. Easter is celebrated in different ways throughout the country, with many variations on the candlelit processions of Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrations themselves — but you can count on plenty of lamb roasts and fireworks. Easter in Corfu is one of the most famous, but wherever you are in Greece during this time you can expect to experience at least some of the country's very rich and colorful Easter traditions.

Summer Events

Summer is when most music and arts festivals are in full swing. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is the country's most prestigious annual summer arts festival, with events taking place at the ancient stone Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater (the Herodion) below the Acropolis as well as south of Athens at the amphitheater of Epidaurus, the best-preserved theater of the ancient world. Events include a mix of classic and contemporary (last summer, Bill Murray recited poetry in the Herodion) and are usually scheduled from late June to early August.

On the day of the August Full Moon Festival in Athens, museums and ancient sites are open in the evening free of charge until midnight.

Assumption is Aug. 15. It's a public holiday in Greece and considered the "Summer Easter." On this day, life in Athens pretty much grinds to a halt as Athenians dash off to the countryside or the islands. If you want to make sure you have a good place to stay anywhere outside of Athens on Aug. 15 or in the two weeks following, it's increasingly essential that you plan and reserve ahead of time.

Fall Events

The prestigious Thessaloniki International Film Festival is usually held during the first part of November. And while they're not exactly going to enrich anybody in cultural terms, Black Friday shopping events in November have recently taken Greeks by storm.

Winter Events

Christmas in Greece is nowhere near as big a deal as Greek Easter, but there are festive lights in the center of big cities like Athens. Also in Athens, New Year's Eve means festive fireworks over the Acropolis.

The Best Times to Explore the Greek Islands

The best times to visit mykonos and santorini.

What ultimately draws visitors to Santorini is the views over the volcanic caldera and not the beaches, and that appeal has fueled the island's rise as a year-round destination. May and June are the best times to dodge the crowds but also enjoy some sun. Otherwise, it's probably better to wait until after mid-September.

Mykonos is a bit trickier: in May and June (and again in September) you'll have more elbow room at the island's many beaches and posh beach bars, but to get a taste of the international razzle dazzle for which the place is most famous, July and August do rock to that inimitable Mediterranean island vibe. But it's also a very expensive vibe. Unlike in Santorini, by the end of September it's already very quiet again in Mykonos.

The Best Times to Visit Other Islands

Whether it's Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Patmos in the Dodecanese archipelago, Paros and the other islands that make up the Cyclades or Crete, the best time of year for an island visit is generally going to be in June, July or September. Prices are lower and hotel rooms are more readily available in June and September, and you can count on warm weather in those months, too.

Loads of Greeks and other Europeans on summer holiday can make island travel in August a real challenge — and sometimes a downright headache. And many islands have their off-season charms: For example, the Saronic Islands near Athens like Hydra and Aegina are easy and fun to visit any time of year (but beach time is mainly May through September).

When to Visit Greece to Avoid Crowds

The tourism season in Greece typically gets going after Greek Easter, with shoulder season ramping up in May and the peak season stretching from the latter part of June into July and all of August. Increasingly, in places like Athens and Crete, September is now considered a high season month.

If you want to avoid crowds in Athens, time your summer travel for June or August instead of July. In the Cycladic archipelago (which includes Mykonos and Santorini), avoid July and August unless you don't mind crowded ferries and higher prices.

In Crete, you can expect crowds at many beaches and in the cities of Heraklion and Chania from June right up until October, so consider June or early fall for Crete. By contrast, in Corfu where the beach season is not quite as long as in Crete, you'll have an easier time avoiding crowds in September.

Winter in Athens tends to be cold and damp, but there are still many sunny days and exploring museums and ancient ruins in the absence of crowds and big tour groups can be quite cool.

The Cheapest Times to Visit Greece

Traveling to Greece is usually priciest during peak season, so if you're looking to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons. The best hotel deals in Athens are going to be from early January through March, but weather is not at its best at that time. You can generally find good hotel deals in April, May, the first part of June and sometimes in September (but less so in Crete).

The shoulder seasons in Greece run from April through the first part of June, and then from about mid-September through mid-October.

Affordable Airfare

Unsurprisingly, airfare is at its most expensive during the summer. July, specifically, is the priciest month when, according to the farecasting app Hopper, long-haul flight prices are around $1,090 round-trip. In May, that dips to $930 round-trip. But during the shoulder seasons and in winter, prices plunge accordingly.

Currently, all American airlines offer only seasonal nonstop flights to Athens and they tend to be expensive, but there's often a workaround. Find a cheap ticket to either London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) and then find a flight that fits your schedule with Greek carrier Aegean : a Star Alliance member with several flights a day from London to Athens International Airport (ATH). Plus, you'll typically get better service than you would from the British low-cost carriers, plus meals are included.

Affordable Hotels

visit greece in june

The most expensive time to book a hotel room in Athens is generally in the summer. The cheapest times are January (after the New Year holiday) and February. The most expensive time to book rooms in popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini is July and especially August.

According to Booking.com , based on bookings made between January 2018 and December 2018, hotels in Athens are 33% more affordable in February than compared to the most expensive month of the year, which (for Booking.com ) is June. Hotels in Santorini in January are 51% more affordable than they are in August, and for Mykonos, March is 73% more affordable than August.

If you're planning to visit Mykonos in the summer, you should plan ahead as much as possible and if you find a deal (paid or points), grab it. Expect hotels on many Greek islands — not just Mykonos and Santorini but also ones like Syros and Sifnos — to be completely sold out over the Aug. 15 Assumption holiday and do not assume you'll be able to find a deal, or anything really, on the spot during that extremely busy time.

In Crete's largest city of Heraklion as well as elsewhere on the island, the high season now effectively runs through the whole month of September, making it wise to book ahead in Crete even for early fall travel.

Don’t get me wrong: June is a busy month for the island but the crowds are nothing compared to the ones in July and August.

All the businesses will be open as usual with no exceptions but most importantly all beachfront businesses, beach clubs , and sea restaurants will be buzzing and be fully operational.

Let’s put it this way:  if August is 120% busy for Santorini, then June is in about 90% busy.

How is the weather like in Santorini in June?

June in Santorini is very hot and dry. The temperature can be anything between 25-35 degrees Celsius (and towards the end of the month even more than 35 degrees Celsius if there is a heat wave, which is pretty common for Greece in June, July and August). Honestly, if it rains in June it’s going on the news in Greece since it is as common as finding kangaroos in Santorini.

June is a very stable month weather-wise and you should get prepared for very hot temperatures in general.

In June, you’ll be able to walk the streets of Fira and Oia or the beaches of Kamari and Perissa in t-shirts and shorts during the day, but you may need a light jacket in the evening (usually not even that…).

Towards the end of the month the weather will probably start feeling even hotter. 🙂

Where should I stay in Santorini in June?

June is officially the first month of the summer in Greece  and the beginning of the high season so prices and availability are limited if you don’t book early enough. You may have to book at least 1 year in advance if you are looking for a specific hotel in Santorini.

In June, you will definitely be seeing crowds on the streets of Oia around sunset time but they won’t be as bad as they are in July or August. It will feel more like September in a way.

oia crowded sunset

June is the month when the schools are having their summer breaks in Greece but it’s not a month when Greeks usually go on holidays.

Another thing you should know is that there is a long weekend with a public holiday towards the 2nd or 3rd week of June (it’s moving every year) which is called the Holy Spirit. This is a big holiday in Greece, so you may see more people than usual on the island on that long weekend.

where to stay in santorini

However, June is the month when the big cruise ships start stopping in Santorini and in my opinion this is the worst thing that can happen. I hate cruises and big cruise ships. They are bad for the environment, they are bad for tourism and they are bad for the locals as the people coming from the cruises don’t really contribute much to the local economy to be honest but are really flooding the island.

June is a geat month for honeymoon in Santorini as the weather will have amazing weather without feeling very crowded. This is great as many things will become easier: finding a table at a restaurants, finding a nice sunbed on the beach or even finding available rooms to the the hotel you want to stay at.

Here are some handy tips to have in mind when looking for hotel in Santorini in June (and not only):

For views to the volcano and the caldera:   Fira ,  Firostefani ,  Imerovigli ,  Oia

For being close to all the bars, restaurants, shops, nightclubs and the buzz:   Fira  (it’s the capital of the island and the town with the most grocery stores, shops and nightclubs)  Oia

For equally beautiful sunsets and views to the caldera and the volcano (without thousands of tourists):   Imerovigli  and  Firostefani

For being closer to the famous black beach (like 5-mins-walk close…) and the best beach bars of the island:  Perissa   or  Perivolos  (no famous caldera and volcano views though)

For being closer to the other black beach with lots of restaurants and amenities:   Kamari  (no famous caldera and volcano views though)

For being close to the famous Red Beach but still have views to the caldera:   Akrotiri  (but it’s a 20-30 mins drive from  Fira -capital)

For being closer to most of the Santorini wineries ( but not worried about the famous volcano/caldera views) :   Pyrgos

For having the best private pools and jacuzzis with caldera views in Santorini:   Imerovigli  or  Firostefani .

What do I need to pack for a trip to Santorini in June?

In June, summer is in full throttle! So you will definitely need your swimsuits, t-shirts, shorts, every single summer dress you first saw on instagram and then bought online, sandals, flip-flops, some hiking shoes (yes, you are going to do some hiking in Santorini, sitting on the pool all day with a cocktail is not good for your health 🙂 ) and so on…

what to pack in santorini

You need all the summer clothes you can find BUT you probably need to take a light jacket for the colder nights (which are very rare but they may happen, especially towards the first half of the month)

How hot is Santorini in June ?

Santorini can be very hot in June and the temperature is usually anything between 25-35 degrees Celsius (75-100 Fahrenheit).

The seawater will be warm but less warm than it is in August or September because it’s just the beginning of the summer anyway. Nothing will stop you though from enjoying the amazing beach life and the awesome beach clubs in Santorini .

The black beaches of Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari are buzzing in June!

Can I swim in Santorini in June ??

You can definitely swim in Santorini in June, but the seawater at the famous seaside towns of Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos will be open and ready to welcome you.

Is June a good time to go to Greece ?

Generally speaking, I believe June is probably the best time to visit Greece as the weather is nice and warm but everywhere you go it feels less crowded than July and August. June is great for honeymoons, it’s great for solo travelers and it’s even great for families (when schools are closed). June is not a month when greeks go on holiday but you should bear in mind that the most famous islands such as Mykonos and Santorini will feel busier than other areas in Greece.

Is Santorini windy in June?

June in Santorini is not that windy compared to August and September but in general summers on Greek islands can be windy and dry. Here is the average wind speed in Santorini during the year:

What things I can do in Santorini in June?

You can literally do everything you’d do during April , May , June , July, August, September or  October  as all businesses, tour operators and hotels will be open as usual.

What are the flights to Santorini in June?

June is basically the month that most of the flight opertors start their direct flights to all greek islands. Here are the companies with direct flights to Santorini usually (these change every year so please double-check before booking anything):

Aegean Airlines

Olympic Air

Sky Express

Astra Airlines

Thomas Cook

(unfortunately, there are no direct flights from outside Europe to Santorini…you have to get off in Athens and then take another plane or ferry to Santorini if you are coming from the US or Australia, for example)

June is a fantastic time to visit Santorini. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll have a fantastic time in Santorini regardless of when you arrive, but I feel that May, June, and early October are among the greatest months to visit the island. You’ll escape the crowds, be able to appreciate the beautiful scenery with fewer people around, avoid most of the enormous and unpleasant cruise ships, and perhaps even obtain better hotel and tour bargains. Santorini in June is the island at its best and it’s also a great month for a honeymoon .

The Best Time to Visit Greece for Good Weather, Fewer Crowds, and Affordable Prices

Greece is calling your name.

visit greece in june

Greece has long beckoned travelers with its beauty. From the crystalline waters in the surrounding Mediterranean Sea and the rich historical sites that dot the nation's map to the divine cuisine and stellar hotels, the European country deserves a spot high on travelers' wish lists.

Travelers flock to Greece year-round, but some months are better to visit than others, especially if you're keen to explore beaches, avoid the masses, or score a deal on a hotel room. Here are the main tourist seasons to keep in mind:

  • High Season:  June to September
  • Shoulder Seasons:  April to May and October
  • Low Season:  November to March

Ready to plan your trip? Here are the best times to travel to Greece, whether you're after good weather, affordable prices, or fewer crowds.

Michela Buttignol/Travel+Leisure

Best Times to Visit Greece for Smaller Crowds

Unsurprisingly, the most popular times to visit Greece are the late spring, summer, and early fall months. This is when the weather is ideal, and all the venues open their doors, inviting guests to stay, eat, and drink.

According to CEIC Data , Greece received 3.64 million tourists in June 2022. In July of the same year, that number rose to 5.27 million, and in August, a whopping 5.86 million enjoyed a Greek getaway, making it by far its busiest month to visit. Numbers dropped in the fall, with 4.56 million visitors in September and 2.75 million in October.

If you don't plan on hitting the beaches, consider a trip to Greece during the winter. While the weather is cooler (the average temperatures hover around 50 degrees Fahrenheit), the crowds are much thinner. In 2023, around 635,000 people visited Greece in January, and a mere 572,500 came in February. In fact, the nation didn't crack one million visitors until April, making the winter much more manageable if you're trying to avoid crowds. However, many venues and hotels close for the winter, so search for accommodations in your intended destination to see what's available and when.

Alessandra Amodio

Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather

If you're after warm weather but want to avoid the sweltering heat, plan a trip in late spring or early fall (April through June or September through October). In May, the average temperature in Athens, the nation's capital, ranges from a high of 74.8 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 61.5 degrees Fahrenheit. In June, things warm up to an average high of 82.6 degrees Fahrenheit — perfect for taking a dip in the ocean.

In September, the average temperatures drop a little in Athens to a high of 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 69.6 degrees Fahrenheit. October is even chillier, with an average high hitting 71.4 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low around 62.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Yes, it's cool, but nowhere near cold enough to feel uninviting. Just remember, the country is relatively large, especially if you include the best islands in Greece , so check your exact destination for average temperatures before booking.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Lower Prices

Visiting Greece on a budget is possible. All you need to do is plan accordingly. According to Skyscanner , the cheapest months to book a flight to Greece are October, November, March, and April. The website notes that July tends to be the most expensive month to fly to Greece, so it's best to avoid the middle of the high season if you're trying to save money.

While April is a less expensive month to fly, it's worth noting that hotel prices increase slightly during Greek Orthodox Easter, which sometimes falls at the end of April. The end of December and the beginning of January see a similar spike. Hotels tend to be pricey during July and August, so avoid these busy months if you're looking for lower room rates. Try late September if you want to book a stay at one of Santorini's best hotels , for example.

Best Time to Visit the Greek Islands

Again, the best time to visit depends on what you're after, but generally speaking, for the most delightful weather, plan a trip to the Greek islands in the late spring, early summer, or beginning of fall. Yes, you can visit in midsummer if you don't mind the heat (and being shoulder-to-shoulder with other travelers).

For example, in Santorini, the average high in July hits 84 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average low is 73 degrees Fahrenheit. The upside is the ultra-warm water at this time of year, with an average sea temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In July, the island typically only experiences one or two rainy days, making your chances of basking in the sun pretty good.

September is considered one of the best months to visit the Greek islands, as the weather is still sunny and warm, and the crowds have thinned out. However, you'll want to research the island you plan to visit since temperatures vary across the archipelagoes.

Worst Times to Visit Greece

There's no bad time to visit Greece. However, July and August can be uncomfortably hot and humid — especially in Athens — with temperatures often soaring above 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The capital city and Cycladic islands (including Mykonos and Santorini) are also at their most crowded and expensive during these months, so it's best to avoid midsummer if you're looking for more elbow room, lower prices, and a relaxed atmosphere.

On the flip side, January is the coldest month in Greece, with temperatures hovering around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. While the cool weather is ideal for exploring historical sites, shops, and art galleries in Athens , it will likely be too chilly to swim in the ocean. If your dream vacation in Greece includes beach time, avoid visiting during the winter months.

In June, much of Greece has intense sunlight, warmth, and blue skies. The weather is arid or semi-arid. We recommend the two main urban centers, the natural and historical areas, and several islands before the crowds of summer come.

Greece Weather in June: Overview

  • Temperature range: 20–29°C (68–84°F)
  • Rainfall: 1 cm (0 inch)
  • Rainy days: 3
  • Humidity: 57%
  • Sunshine hours/day: 11 hours

June Climate Comparison (Averages) for Greece's Top Tourism Areas

Greece has hot, bright, and sunny weather in June with almost no rain. Both the days and the evenings are great for touring Greece's historical places, hiking, and strolling. The humidity makes it feel hotter generally.

Northern Greece: Northern Greece's weather is cooler and more variable since colder continental air from Europe brings more rain and stormy weather. The natural beauty, flowers, and fruit trees are amazing.

Southern Greece: Southern Greece and the islands are sunny, dry, and hot. You can go to beaches, swim and do watersports.

The Best Places to Visit in Greece in June

June is a good time to hike outdoors and walk around Greece's extensive ancient ruins and urban attractions. You can enjoy nature, beaches, and watersports during a moderate tourism period in early June. The bright sun and clear blue skies are very uplifting, but can be scorching too.

1.Athens — Tour the Whole City

In June, the hot weather with 11 hours of intense sunshine and the 50% average humidity makes the 32ºC (90ºC) average high feel very hot, about 36ºC (96ºC) actually. Athens is hotter than almost all the other tourist highlights in Greece, and you should be careful of heat stroke and sunburn.

To avoid high heat and the densest crowds, try to arrive at the Acropolis by 8 a.m. when it and the Agora Museum open, because after 9, crowds of cruise-ship tourists and other tourists march in. The same is true for the changing of the guard and early demonstrators at Syntagma Square.

Mount Lycabettus is a 272-meter-tall (892-foot-tall) hill with a monastery on top in the downtown area. An excellent activity would be to wander up the park paths for some exercise, nature hiking, and wonderful views of the whole city and the shore from Athens' highest hill.

2.Crete — Hike and Enjoy the Beauty of High Summer

Crete is the most popular Greek island, and it's known for history, ancient places, rugged nature, and beaches. There is moderate tourism at the beginning of June, so you can see the beautiful scenery and hike without larger crowds with you, and the prices for hotels and food are more moderate.

In June, you can swim in 22°C (72°F) degree water. And there are 12 hours of sunshine! That and 57% average humidity makes the average high of 27ºC (81ºF) feel hot when you are walking out in it.

You can tour Knossos and hike the 16 km (10 mile) Samaria Gorge trail while there are still flowers blooming and lots of green vegetation. The Heraklion Museum is among the best in Greece.

  • Flights from Athens take an hour.

3.Meteora — Hike, Enjoy the Dusk and Night Sky, and Go Rafting

Meteora is geologically astounding with striped and colorful sandstone pillars and cliffs, and on some of the steepest and highest ones, amazing monasteries and nunneries are perched like little castles.

Just as beautiful are the sunsets that highlight all the reds and browns of the sandstone. The sky is especially clear and unpolluted, so you can see the Milky Way, and the monasteries glow at night. Rafting down the Pineios River is another exciting way to see the scenery.

You can hike around the valley to Kalambaka and the monasteries between 9 a.m. and 4 or 5 p.m. The entry price is only 3 euros (3 USD) each. It is one of their top places for pilgrimage.

  • Driving from Athens takes 4½ hours, and driving from Thessaloniki, 3 hours.

4.Corfu — Relax, Sightsee, and Enjoy Seafood

Corfu is the northernmost large Ionian island in western Greece about 3 km (2 miles) from Albania. If you want a break from intense sun and heat and want to see a green agricultural island, Corfu has warm weather and renowned agriculture and food.

There are good beaches, and the water temperature is pleasant at 23°C (73°F). The relatively high average humidity of 63% makes the 23°C (73°F) highs feel slightly warmer. A little rainfall keeps the island beautiful and green in summer.

Corfu is famed for Venetian architecture, seafood and the delicious, near organic vegetables, fruits and cheeses — and 3 or 4 million olive trees! You could enjoy relaxation and a green break from the bleak cacti, browns and tans of much of Greece in high summer.

  • A ferry from Sarande, Albania takes half an hour. There is an international airport. Flying from Athens takes about an hour.

5.Kefalonia — Have a Family and Beach Vacation

Kefalonia is the biggest of the Ionian Islands off the western coast of Greece. While Corfu may appeal to more elderly and people wanting to rest, Kefalonia is a place for adventures and great for families with kids.

There are Italian castles and monasteries to explore and an underground lake called Melissani where you can take a boat on. There are many fine beaches with calmer seas than most islands of Greece. If you come before the end of June, there are fewer tourists.

The island is big enough to have solitude in nature, and the Corfu Trail is 220 km (136 miles) long through varied terrain such as shorelines, mountains and olive farms. Average temperatures range from warm to mild — 26°C (79°F) to 16°C (61°F).

  • Flights are the best travel option and take an hour from Athens.

Moderate to High Tourism Season: Touring Advice for June

In June, the bright sun, blue skies, and intense light might intoxicate you as you stroll and hike around. The Mediterranean weather might also give you heatstroke, so drink a lot of water. Tourism is still moderate at the beginning of the month, so there are also moderate hotel and flight prices.

The high tourism season starting at the end of June is when crowds of tourists come, and there is hot and very dry weather. Ferries and flights run with the greatest frequency, and paradoxically, you might find bargain flights to popular islands such as Crete.

You can enjoy Greece's famous healthy cuisine made from their naturally-farmed fresh fruit and vegetables, naturally-made traditional cheese, and excellent seafood.

Public holidays in June: June 24, 2024 is Pentecost Monday. Pentecost or Holy Spirit Monday celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples in Jerusalem 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus.

What to Wear in June

There is a big temperature difference between day and night. Only in higher elevations or the north would you need a jacket at night. The islands and the south of Greece require thin summer clothing. Wear polarized sunglasses since the sunshine glaring off the polished pavement and ruins is intense.

UV protection: If you have sensitive skin, be sure to cover up with long sleeves, long trousers or dresses, and a sunhat since the sunlight is intense with the average humidity level of about 57%. Otherwise, you might be surprised that the intense sunlight does not burn.

Shoes: Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes when hiking and walking around on archeological sites such as Knossos and Acropolis Park and cobbled stone streets. Mars Hill, for example, is smoothed rock, maybe from millions of footfalls, and is slippery when wet.

Swimwear: The average sea temperature is 22°C (71°F) that is warm enough for swimming, but you might prefer a thin wetsuit.

What to wear in Corfu in June

Given the average temperatures detailed above, it’ll be clear you’ll want to wear light clothing — t-shirts, shorts, and sundresses.

You’ll also want flips flops for the beach, comfy shoes or sandals for exploring the Old Town and villages, and walking shoes if you plan to trek the Corfu Trail.

Oh, and don’t forget to pack sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.

While June is just ahead of the peak summer season, it is on the brink of it. So, best to book early to secure better deals on your preferred flights and accommodation.

Start the day early

While June’s temperatures aren’t as scorching hot as July and August, you’d be better off getting out and about early before the day is at its hottest.

That’s an especially good idea if you’re heading to the beach, or going on a hike. Save the afternoons for long lunches and exploring cultural sites.

What to Wear in Greece in Spring

Weather in Greece in March – May: Spring temperatures can range from warm to hot, with an average temperature between 19°C-20’s°C or 66-77°F.

With the warm weather, Spring is considered the best season to visit as the temperatures are more moderate, compared to the summer months.

Award-winning blogger and Rough Guide author, Rebecca Hall from the Life Beyond Borders blog has lived in Greece since 2008 and recommends jeans and wide leg trousers in darker shades. Skirts and shorts are perfect to wear during the day with boots or sneakers.

Pair them with vibrant sleeveless tops and blouses you can mix and match and layer under long sleeve shirts or 3/4 sleeve tops for cooler days. Bring a light jacket for the evenings to ward off the chill.

When planning what to wear in Greece in spring, don’t forget to accessorize your outfit with sunglasses and a chic sun hat.

Black, gray, or navy are good color choices because you can wear them with anything, and more importantly, are forgiving with the dust from archeological sites.

Remember, the easiest way to explore and get around is on foot– comfortable walking shoes  are essential!

What to Wear in Greece in Summer

Weather in Greece in June – August: Summer in Greece is HOT, particularly in August. Athens can get to a sweltering 40°C/104°F degrees and even higher, which means that many places practically shut down as the locals attempt to escape the heat.

./Sonja Riemenschneider notes that the weather isn’t much different throughout the country in the summer. Be prepared for hot, sunny days wherever you go, with the chance of rain increasing from zero to slight as you venture toward the mainland.

As you’ll be experiencing very hot temperatures , Rebecca Hall recommends packing tank tops, shorts , skirts, and light dresses ; these can all be in bright, colorful shades to reflect the season. Opt for thin, light materials like rayon, cotton, and linen for extra breathability and coolness.

For sightseeing, pair the dresses with comfortable sneakers or walking sandals. You should leave your boots at home.

If your Greece summer plans include nice dinners, cocktail parties, or an evening out on the town relishing in the culture and cuisine, bring a versatile and classic dress.

While it is unlikely that you will need a jacket during summer, pack a light cardigan or light layer in case you experience a cooler evening.

What to Wear in Greece in Autumn

Weather in Greece in September – November: It will remain warm on your trip to Greece until November. Autumn is not definable as a season between summer and winter; however, the temperatures do fluctuate, with the possibility of rain. Average temperatures range between 18-23°C / 64-73°F.

When planning what to wear in Greece in autumn, refer to the spring guidelines–because the weather is very similar between these two seasons. You would need very little variation, if any, with perhaps the addition of a waterproof jacket and a scarf.

What to Wear Greece in Winter

Weather in Greece in December – February: Greek winters can be cold; it can even snow in Athens. With fewer daylight hours, you’ll find average daytime lows between 5-8°C / 41-46°F and nighttime lows of about 3°C / 37°F.

To ensure your winter wardrobe is practical, stylish, and keeps you warm, add gloves, a warm hat, and a thick wool scarf.

Use jeans as your base, and consider a pair of thermal underwear or silk long johns to wear under your jeans on the coldest days. Layering is important–so think long sleeve tops, sweaters, and even t-shirts for the warmer indoor temperatures.

Find out why thermals are a must for traveling light (and staying warm) in winter!

What to Pack for Greece: Santorini

You’ll fit right in wearing breezy dresses, linen shirt-dresses or lace tops, and shorts or a skirt. White is the color of choice, but bright colors are popular, too.

Pack dresses you’ll be comfortable lounging in as you take advantage of killer balcony views or napping in the shade.

For shoes, sandals with an ankle strap and a sturdy sole are perfect. Heels are almost impossible to wear on the extremely hilly cobblestone streets. If you must bring heels, choose a pair of comfy wedges so you get a little more stability.

The stacked buildings that make the cliffs of Santorini so beautiful also make for some seriously steep streets! Pack your shoes accordingly.

Check out these comfortable walking sandals that don’t sacrifice style!

What to Pack for Greece: Mykonos

Mykonos is all about beach life and nightlife. Crop tops or see-through tops with bikinis underneath paired with high-waisted shorts or skirts will give you that perfect beach to bar look. Stylish summer shorts will take you from day to night, city to sea, and so much more!

Lacy cover-ups that can double as dresses are great, too. Flat sandals that can go from beach to club are best.

The streets in Mykonos town are more even and flat than Santorini, so you won’t need as sturdy a sole here, but it won’t hurt either. Don’t bother with fancy heels–it’s not that kind of nightlife. Wedges are fine but not necessary.

These are the best sandals for travel in summer!

What to Pack for Greece: Hydra

Hydra is one of Greece’s Saronic Islands, which is very close to Athens and the Peloponnese. It’s a popular weekend destination for Athenians and tourists looking for a quick break from the traffic of Athens. Hydra is entirely traffic-free–the only mode of land transportation is by foot or by donkey!

The attire here is a little less casual, with off-the-shoulder tops, classy, lightweight dresses, and strappy leather flat sandals or wedges. The café and restaurant scene is excellent, with lots of harbor-front cafés under large sun canopies packed with comfy couches and tables perfect for leisurely lounging.

Be sure to bring a pair of cute and comfortable sandals that can handle some light trails too, as the walk from Hydra Harbor to the nearby Kamini Harbor and further Vlychos Beach will reward you with panoramic coastline and views to the nearby islands.

It’s the season for easy breezy vacation style! Shop our roundup of beautiful summer maxi dresses !

What to Pack for Greece: Folegandros

Greece has many gorgeous islands that haven’t yet been overwhelmed by tourism. My favorite was Folegandros but the same fashion principles apply to them all: you can wear pretty much whatever you want!

The beaches of Folegandros are quiet and pristine, and many are clothing optional. Assuming you’re a bikini gal, bring multiple–as the beaches are the thing to do here. Don’t miss the boat tour around the island, stopping at many of the isolated beaches and swimming coves.

Bring shoes that can get wet and a cover-up that dries quickly and will keep you from getting burned while you’re out on the water. An underwater camera can be a lot of fun, too.

These beach sandals are must-haves!

what-to-pack-for-greece-in-summer

Romper | Crossbody  | Sandals

For walking around town or exploring the island by land, anything loose and comfortable will do–shorts, tanks, rompers, or dresses. Don’t bother with jeans or other heavy clothes. Athletic sandals are ideal for beach days since a lot of beaches require a bit of hiking or scrambling over rocks.

There’s no need for fancy accessories or heels here: your primary goal is to soak up the sun, explore the island, and splash around in the aquamarine jeweled water.

What to Pack for Greece: Mainland

Outside Athens, at the tourist sites of Delphi and Meteora, you’ll see fewer short skirts and crop tops and more conservative dresses. Summer maxi dresses are great for mainland Greece. For more conservative places, knee length or longer is best.

Lightweight tanks will keep you cool and a light shawl or scarf wrapped around your shoulders will get you into the monasteries of Meteora without having to don the provided wraps at the door (which undoubtedly get a lot of use… and sweat).

Keep in mind that women wearing shorts or pants (vs skirts or dresses) will need to wear the provided wrap-around skirt to get into the monasteries.

What to Pack for Greece: Athens

Athens’ local style is smart-casual. Men dress well, and women of all ages are fashion forward and body confident.

Sonja Riemenschneider with Breadcrumbs Guide spent a month traveling Greece, visiting Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Folegandros, Tinos, Hydra, Delphi, and Meteora. She suggests that if you want to try to blend in with the locals, opt for a polished and neat appearance.

Pack sundresses, belted tunic dresses, and fitted tops. High-waisted trousers are popular with all ages and stylish trendsetters love their high waisted baggy jeans, too. For summer, high waisted skirts and shorts are also worn.

The areas around the Acropolis, including the fun and recommended pedestrian street Apostolos Pavlos, are packed with both Athenian fashion forward locals and tourists dressed to explore ancient ruins.

Rebecca Hall notes that durable shoes such as comfortable sneakers or walking sandals with a non-slip sole are key, especially while you explore the ancient sites since you’ll be walking on lots of steep slopes with smooth marble. It can be dangerously slippery, particularly when it rains.

Insider’s Guide on Things to Do in Athens

Athens born and founder of the global platform Living Postcards shares that the city hides treasures. Treasures that the inhabitants don’t even know. Athens is the oldest city in Europe and the one with the longest history. We all know that the Parthenon is a must see, but she suggests that there are many more experiences waiting such as:

  • Enjoy your morning coffee in Kolonaki, Glyfada, Kifissia or Thisio. You will love these places!
  • Take a trip to the nearest beach. Thank goodness beaches are so close to the center of Athens!
  • Take your friends for mezé in Piraeus, Elefsina, Drapetsona, Keratsini (great fish restaurants there too).
  • Try excellent cocktails at Aigli Zappeiou or at Galaxy Hilton. The view is magical or use the metro, and see other places of Athens. Visit Panormou station for example, you can drink and eat in a lot of bars, restaurants as soon as you get off the station.
  • The Kolonaki area is near Syntagma square. Go to Milioni or Tsakalof street and taste trendy souvlaki.
  • Go to the Islamic museum of Athens. It’s not a place that the tourist guides would recommend, but I do. Believe me, it deserves every minute of your time.
  • Visit Kipseli, and especially the Market of the area, with local food, and a lot going on. It’s one of the places no one would tell you to go. But you want to see things with your own eyes.
  • Go to Gazi, Keramikos. You will see the Industrial Museum of Athens, popular bars, sophisticated restaurants and alternative fashion markets.

TFG Editor’s Tried and Tested Greece Packing List for Summer

I spent one week at the end of May and early June visiting Athens, followed by one week in Santorini, viewing the sights at a very slow pace. For this trip, I packed mostly for summer. It was hot half the time and cold and windy the other half.

what-to-wear-in-greece

My H&M travel uniform for every single flight!!!! (Also my everyday uniform, too.)

This is My Packing List for Greece:

Note that I brought more clothing than I wore during my time in Greece because I was on a longer 5-week-long trip country hopping in Europe.

I have all new Osprey Transporter bags for the trip. Loving them so far and couldn’t have been happier with my choices.

  • Osprey Transporter 44L Backpack : to use as a Diaper Bag for the flight and to store Jade’s belongings
  • Osprey Transporter 38L Wheeled Suitcase : to store my belongings
  • Osprey Farpoint 70L Backpack : for Matt’s belongings and have extra room; bring additional baby items if needed

What I Wore on the Flight

  • Black H&M Blouse
  • Washed Black H&M Jeans
  • Taos Plim Soul Luxe Leather Sneakers
I’m sorry no links for the H&M products yet. I’ve been trying to find them but can’t. The top’s been sold out for some time and the replacement version isn’t the same. If I can find them I’ll post them for sure!

 Jumpsuits

  • Roan + Ryan Gianna Smocked Jumpsuit
  • Madewell Jumpsuit in Navy
  • Vince Camuto Animal Print Jumpsuit
  • Summer Wrap Dress : Cute, lightweight, and budget-friendly, too. I sized up to a medium for a more comfortable fit. This is, for sure, a new TFG staple!!!!!
  • Deep Red Printed Summer Dress : which is super cute, wrinkle-resistant, and under $40, too!
  • Madewell Joanna Midi Dress
  • Cloth and Stone Sleeveless Top : I brought only one sleeveless top for the trip and chose this one because it’s neutral, comfortable, wrinkle-resistant and has a hint of detail in the front without looking overly plain. Wearing it above!
  • Nation Ltd. Noella Ruffle One Shoulder Top
  • Rails Alena Shadow Stripe Top
  • H&M Button Down Blouse
  • H&M Jeans
  • H&M Shorts
  • All Saints Sweater in Olive.
  • Anatomie jacket

Accessories

  • Madewell Packable Sun Hat : This is super cute but the small/medium is too large on me so it’s not too practical with the wind here. I only bought it the night before my trip when I realized I had left my favorite Wallaroo sun hat in Playa del Carmen since I was departing from Louisville.
  • Purse: Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B Crossbody
  • L Space Daytime Cover up : I just bought this cover up for my trip and I love it! I actually ran out of clothes on laundry day and layered it over a tank top and shorts to wear it as a dress in Santorini. It’s super cute, too! I’ll be wearing this as a sundress layered over a slip dress in the future.
  • Taos sneakers : worn on the flight.
  • Taos sandals in Dark Gray, size 7/38: They have two straps making them ideal to get a secure fit even on medium to narrow feet!
  • Coach Tan Slide Sandals (similar style) : I bought these last minute at Macy’s as I thought they were neutral enough to wear fo r a nice meal but also practical enough to wear to a beach. They’ve been the perfect replacement for flip flops and a nice break from regular shoes at the end of the day when we go for a light stroll or to grab dinner.
I also ordered the Taos Trophy 2 in black and they were actually really cute, too! I probably would’ve considered bringing them had I ordered tan instead as it would’ve been a more versatile neutral with my wardrobe. The sandals in black clashed with all my navy blue clothing.

Next, here’s what worked and what I would’ve done differently so far!

what-to-wear-in-greece

Wearing my Madewell Jumpsuit , Taos Sneakers , and Madewell Hat !

ATHENS WARDROBE WINS

Jumpsuits.

I don’t even know why I packed anything else. I can wear these all day long. Out of one week, I’ve already worn each twice. So easy, so comfortable for my body and the weather, too.

I particularly love the Roan + Ryan Gianna Smocked Jumpsuit because I can easily see myself wearing this repeatedly. I love rayon fabric for travel in summer, it’s my favorite. If I had to pack a 5-piece capsule , this piece would be in it!

The other jumpsuit from Madewell would be perfect anywhere from Athens to Paris and beyond. It’s airy, has eco-friendly linen blend fabric, and it’s also wrinkle-resistant, too.

The printed romper is sold out but Evereve has a bunch of new styles (I’m sooo obsessed with the store Evereve right now!!!)

what-to-wear-in-greece

Wearing Taos Lux White Sneakers

My white leather sneakers are a major win!!!

If you’re wondering whether or not you should pack white sneakers , don’t hesitate. They’re stylishly appropriate, and this particular pair from Taos has arch support making them shockingly comfortable for all-day walking. I opted for the leather vs. canvas for easier cleaning.

Sadly they are currently sold out but i f you’re looking for the best all-white sneakers for your next trip to Europe, this selection , as chosen by TFG readers, lists versatile, comfy, and fashionable options!

what-to-wear-in-greece

Wearing my H&M Jeans, All Saints Sweaters , Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B Crossbody , and Coach Tan Slide Sandals (Similar)

Wide leg high waist jeans!

Everyone seems to be wearing a wide leg, and I’m happy I brought my current favorite from H&M. My jumpsuits are also both wide leg.

I’m wearing it with my All Saints Sweater that I absolutely love and got on sale! I believe the color was olive, and it’s a warm cashmere and wool fabric. I brought this instead of my go-to J Crew Merino Wool Sweater , which I regret not bringing because it’s a lighter, thinner layer I can wear under anything vs. this one is more bulky.

I loved the look, though, and thought it was perfect for Europe!

When planning what to wear in Greece in winter, choose boots that are waterproof and lined with materials like wool, to ensure that your feet are kept dry and warm at all times; also include a waterproof jacket and/or a coat, to protect you from the elements!

What else would you suggest when planning what to wear in Greece?

Please note: Most of Europe’s budget airlines have this carryon bag allowance: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airline’s individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

Tori

Thank you for your tips for traveling to Greece. We are looking at a cruise in the fall. Excited to see this part of the world.

Linda Wright

Alex, I’m excited to use these suggestions when preparing for my trip to Greece next year. My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary!! I love your blog and Facebook group. Thanks for inspiring us all to enjoy life and to experience the amazing people, food, experiences, and culture that the world has to offer!

Susan

I’m traveling to Greece in April, 2023. Your site (and Facebook page) have been helpful for planning my trip.

Angela Janik

I can’t wait to use all this info when I travel to Greece.

Mary

My husband and I will be on a cruise of the Greek Islands October 31-November 7. I’ll be checking out the weather forecast as it gets closer to the time we arrive, but I like to have an idea of what to take beforehand. Should I go with your autumn or winter advice for packing? I’ll have no problem with on board choices, but we’ll be on shore excursions every day of the cruise. Thanks in advance.

Alex

Hi Mary, it can remain warm in Greece until November. Autumn is not definable as a season between summer and winter; however, the temperatures do fluctuate, with the possibility of rain.

I am afraid that the best advice we can offer you is to check the weather forecast at weather.com to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing packed for the temperature.

I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there about the weather in Greece: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and experiences. Have an amazing time! ?

Amy M. Biggs

Ill be traveling to athens in late november. Will i want a heavish winter coat?

Hi Amy, thank you for your question. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing. I would suggest that you pack clothes which you can easily layer for when needed, more tips here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-stay-warm-in-cold-weather/ I would highly suggest that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps. Have a brilliant trip! ?

CoralBunny

I really enjoy your clothing recommendations. I wish you had more budget items and not so many high end clothing options. Maybe I am missing something here.

I plan to travel to Germany and Italy for work. So, I would love to see work clothing combined with play clothing.

alex

Hi Bonnie, take a look at this post on how to interpret our product suggestions: https://travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ For work/play clothing, take a look at this: https://travelfashiongirl.com/womens-business-clothes-for-travel/

Rachel O.

I love the dress featured for Athens in the autumn, but the link just takes me to a general Amazon “striped dress” page. Do you have a more specific link for it?

Hi Rachel, the items get sold out immediately so we replace them with general links so our readers can search available products instead 🙂

Devon

This is a great help for me as I am traveling to Greece and turkey in august. Is the recommended items to stay away from packing?

Maybe just stay away from common overpacking pitfalls: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-guide-to-stop-overpacking/

Rose

Excellent! I’m off to Greece in 2 days and this is just what I needed.

alex

Hope you had fun Rose!

Cici

Hi! Love this site! Very informative, fun and complete.

I would like to know if it’s ok to mix some summer clothes with those for autumn to a Santorini and Athens trip in the FIRST TWO WEEKS OF OCTOBER. Do you have any tips?

Thanks a lot!!

Travel Fashion Girl

Mixing the clothes is a great idea 🙂 If the weather is cooler then layers are key!

Lizi

This is super helpful. Can you say if small backpacks like the one shown above in Autumn are still popular? This is not something that’s currently common fashion in the US. Thanks!

Alex

Any tips for handbags, backpacks, etc.? I am a bit worried about thieves especially when I chose to shop. Should I be worried about my shopping bags being snatched?

Hi Alex! Here are a few tips that might help:

https://travelfashiongirl.com/top-5-anti-theft-travel-bags-for-women-best-sellers/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/convertible-backpack-purse/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/travel-safety-tips/

Leni

Sorry but all this is wrong.I live in Greece and in Greece people wear whatever they want. There isn’t a specific style.do you want to blend in with the locals?wear whatever is in your closet (except for the hotdog costume.ahh..high school..)

Thanks for your feedback Leni! There really isn’t a “dress code” in most parts of the world. This is just a fun guide to help travelers feel more comfortable in choosing their clothing for the weather when they travel – for Greece or any destination around the world.

Kee Dishion

Not all of us traveling are skinny 30 year olds. How about information and advice for 60 + year olds who are still active, attractive, full of life and love adventure.. I happen to be a very active 77 year young who loves to travel and wants to look chic for my age. I do still love your site..

Thanks Kee! Check out my Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ where there are many women similar to you that love to share their tips. I’m also in the process of hiring a writer that can provide the information you’ve requested as I can’t offer advice on things I don’t have experience with. Thanks!

Shirley

Travelling with a group of seniors, fit and active from Oct. 18-31, overland, by bus and cruising the Islands. Accommodation in hotels nightly for dinner and breakfast. I usually over pack and am trying to coordinate to lighten my load. I understand the mean temperature will be around 23, with some possible showers.

nadja

Thanks for the article! How about dress tips for the Islands? I’m planning a trip to Athens, Santorini and Crete next September. I noticed there wasn’t any white article of clothing in your article. Is it too touristy?

I’ll post your question on Facebook for some feedback. Thanks!

Sarah

We went to Athens and Santorini, in August, and there was nothing but white, everywhere. I bought a bunch of dresses (all white) and people were also all wearing pretty sandals. They could be bought locally for cheap too. I bought from locals boutiques, not the fast fashion chains.

Alanna

We will be traveling to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos the last two weeks in April. I plan to bring my Birkenstocks Gizah because those are my favorite travel sandals but you also recommend bringing an ankle boot. I was thinking of a closed toe espadrille instead. The end of April in the islands is an ankle boot really necessary?

Hi Alanna, the best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing and footwear packed. You may find this article about choosing the best walking shoes for Europe helpful: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-walking-shoes-for-europe/ I hope you have a great trip!

No women allowed: These 5 destinations are men-only

Three of these fascinating places are UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a fourth aspires to be one.

A man in a red gold adorned robe stands center frame as light streams in from the window illuminating him and a mand in a black robe standing behind him.

Are you a woman itching for another stamp in your passport? Then you might want to bypass the following destinations, all of which are famous not just for their spectacular scenery or historic import, but also for banning female tourists. From ancient religious beliefs to Nazi-era morality restrictions, here are five places where women are prohibited to visit—and why.

Mount Athos, Greece

For more than 1,000 years, Orthodox Christian pilgrims and monks have flocked to dozens of Eastern Orthodox monasteries on and around Mount Athos, located on a picturesque peninsula in northern Greece known for its spectacular views and caches of rare art. The “Holy Mountain” and more than 100 miles of land around it has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site since the 1990s for its “exceptional universal significance.”

But while Mt. Athos may have “universal significance,” it isn’t universally open. Since A.D. 1046, women and female animals alike have been banned from the Athos Peninsula—excluding only female cats.

Not only do the mountain’s monasteries forbid women on the grounds that their presence would make it hard for monks to cling to their vows of celibacy, but Orthodox tradition holds that the Mt. Athos belongs to the Virgin Mary, and that no other woman may visit its hallowed ground.

That hasn’t kept women from trying: Some have attempted to sneak onto the peninsula by donning men’s clothing, and in 2019 a set of female bones was unearthed beneath a Byzantine chapel on the site. But Mt. Athos remains male-only and is protected by special legal status within Greece, which considers it an autonomous region, and a special provision in European law that provides the mountain special status “justified exclusively on grounds of a spiritual and religious nature.”

Mount Ōmine, Japan

Seeking gender equality atop other peaks? You may want to skip Japan’s Mount Ōmine, located on the island of Honshu and known for its sacred significance and cultural heritage.

Introducing Nat Geo Kids Book Bundle!

Also designated a UNESCO World Heritage site , the mountain is significant for its spiritual role. The area’s Shinto and Buddhist temples and shrines have long attracted ascetics, travelers, and even members of the imperial family, and those who walk the rugged, green mountain paths are treated to a uniquely peaceful mountain landscape.

But women have been prohibited from the peak of Ōmine for over 1,000 years—banned both because of the “distraction” they would purportedly present to male pilgrims and prohibitions on the presence of menstruating females at rituals. The ban may be old, but it’s still contested by some—over 10,000 Japanese women petitioned for it to be lifted when the mountain was designated a UNESCO heritage site in 2004.

Okinoshima island, japan.

Another sacred heritage site in Japan also bars women: Okinoshima Island, a tiny island off of Fukuoka. The island, manned by a rotating cast of lone Shinto priests, is considered a deity and is recognized by UNESCO as an “exceptional example of the tradition of worship of a sacred island.” Its traditional origins actually center around three sea goddesses memorialized at three shrines on Okinoshima, and for more than a thousand years pilgrims brought sacrifices to the island, including mirrors, coins, and gold rings from the Korean Peninsula that memorialize past interchange between Japan and Korea.

The island is largely off-limits to both genders today, but each year hundreds of men visit the island for a festival. Even then, they’re only allowed to set foot on its shores after bathing in sea water. Why can’t women join along? In 2017, an official explained that the brief trip to the island is considered too dangerous for women and that they’re banned for their own safety.

Herbertstrasse, Hamburg, Germany

Even liberal Europe boasts a no-female-tourist-allowed enclave: Hamburg’s notorious Herbertstrasse, a street verboten to women—those who aren’t sex workers, that is. The street is located near the Reeperbahn, an area of the city that’s considered one of the most famous red-light districts in the world. Technically, Herbertstrasse is a small side street renowned for its neon lights and windows featuring hundreds of scantily-clad (and legal) sex workers. But though it is a public street and thus subject to Germany’s strict gender equality laws , visitors to Herbertstrasse must first pass beyond large metal barriers with signs that explicitly prohibits all female tourists and males under 18 from entering.

And those barriers have a sinister history: Though women have long practiced prostitution in Hamburg and the Herbertstrasse, the notorious street was once open to all. That changed in 1933, when the newly elected Nazis closed off the street with barriers as part of a bid to control sex work and vice in the early days of National Socialism.

Penning in Hamburg’s sex workers was purportedly to prevent them from “infecting” the morals of everyday Germans, but it also served to isolate them from the community and ended up shielding not just their profession, but their persecution. Beginning in 1933, Nazis arrested more than 3,000 women in Hamburg as “asocials” in punishment for prostitution. Many died along with sex workers from other German cities in concentration camps like Ravensbruck and Neuengamme, their stories lost to time. But the gates—and the prohibition against female visitors—remained long after the Nazis were gone; in the 1970s Hamburg actually fortified the gates, erecting even higher steel barriers to block the public area from view. These days, the surrounding streets feature something else: “Stolpersteine”—memorial cobblestones or plaques bearing the names of some of the persecuted sex workers and memorializing their deaths in Nazi camps.

A man on a donkey looks at a blue lake.

Band-e-Amir National Park, Afghanistan

Known as the Afghan version of the Grand Canyon, Band-e-Amir in Bamiyan province is the first park of its kind in Afghanistan, renowned for more than 200 miles of spectacular lakes, soaring cliffs, and natural dams. The national park, first opened in 2009 and nominated for UNESCO recognition, was once praised as a symbol of Afghanistan’s postwar progress and even employed the nation’s first female park rangers.   In 2023, however, the Taliban-led Afghan government announced that the national park was off-limits for female visitors, purportedly due to “modesty” violations. Taliban fighters have also been stationed at park entrances to prohibit their entry.

The move is just one of many designed to keep women from public life in Afghanistan. Since re-seizing rule of the country in 2021, the Taliban’s Vice and Virtue Ministry has barred women from most facets of public life, restricting dress and travel and keeping women from traveling long distances using public transportation.

Residents of Band-e-Amir report that tourism has diminished since the ban took effect—a prohibition that keeps female visitors from viewing some of the nation’s most breathtaking scenery. For now, the only women who’ll get to enjoy it are those who already live in the scenic region.
