The visitor trail provides a complete immersion into the brand, history and products of Cailler of Switzerland. The experience is sensitive, sensual and poetic, giving the visitor a window into the world of chocolate by means of a transparent and sparkling aesthetic.

This sense of imagination is paired with presentations on the different stages in the Cailler chocolate production process, which are relayed as part of the interactive audiovisual guided tour. Through cameras the visitors can watch live as the ingredients of chocolate are processed. The past also comes to life through a selection of photographs that retrace the factory's history from its humble origins in 1898 right up to the 1960s. This journey through time brings memories to life. Appetites whetted, visitors can then visit a specially designed shop which sells the entire range of Cailler of Switzerland chocolates. Sensation, knowledge, discovery, pleasure: the original visitors' tour at the Broc chocolate factory has something for everyone.

Chocolate workshops in the Atelier du Chocolat

Interested visitors have the opportunity to produce their own creations in the chocolate workshop under the guidance of a Cailler chocolate maker. In the workshops one produces fine chocolates and experiments with bitter and sweet tastes and receives insight into the world of tempering, conching, and of the ganache. The visitors, of course, take home the chocolate they have produced. The Atelier du Chocolat offers weekly changing workshops. Duration: 1.5h Number of participants: 1-20 Languages: German, English, French, Italian

  • VermontMama3 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Fun workshop, great for a family. but don’t show up late or no one will help you! We signed up for the chocolate making workshop and, unfortunately, arrived 10 minutes late due to unexpected traffic. When we got there, the session was already in session, which we expected, but the course instructors basically refused to help us because we “missed the instructions and they weren’t going to explain it again.” We had no idea what we were doing, were missing basic supplies, and had no one willing to assist us. Obviously it was our fault that we were late, but it was very frustrating to be treated like misbehaving children after paying so much money for this workshop. Read more Written March 13, 2024
  • JRGulesn 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Rather meh. Pre booking doesn’t stop you waiting in a queue for 20 minutes with barrier after barrier to hold you back, each one manned by super strict and rather intimidating staff. The audio guided tour is average and the exhibits are a mix of reasonably educational and risible. Don’t go if you’re claustrophobic because you are effectively corralled in a series of underground bunkers. Towards the end, if you’re still standing, there’s a counter where two staff members are decorating pre-made chocolate bunnies (we went in the run up to Easter). They’re very skilled but you sense they’d really rather not be there like animals in a zoo. You can’t interact with them. So there’s no actually chocolate making on show. You see pre-made chocolates get wrapped and that’s that. As it’s billed as a chocolate factory, you’d think you might be able to see some of the process. The guy handing out the mini chocolate bars is lovely. The chocolate tasting at the end is generous. It would be improved by a wider variety and maybe something like a chocolate fountain. Also, after just two Neapolitans, your teeth are aching from the high sugar content. Sugar is cheap, cocoa is expensive. Don’t dare take any chocolates away with you from the tasting corridor. The Swiss really love their warning notices. Finally, this company is a Nestlé company, which to be fair, they don’t hide. You have to weigh up how much you want a few “free” chocolates (for which you’ve paid 15 francs) against the company’s global reputation and ethics. Read more Written March 11, 2023

We took a 4-hour private chocolate-making class, and the quality, detail, and professionalism far-exceeded our best expectations. Geraldine was absolutely awesome. I'm sure she's taught that class hundreds of times, but she seemed as passionate about it with the 4 of us than she was the first time she taught it. She was very attentive, informative and personable. I cannot say enough good things about Geraldine. Her assistant, Isaline, was extremely attentive and helpful, too. The two of them made an excellent team. I would highly recommend this activity, and would do it again in a heartbeat. In full-disclosure, it was expensive; but it was worth every penny. • Pichtee 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not what I expected If you arrive by car, there is a large free parking. The tour starts at specific hours, your tickets will show when you can go in. There is an audioguide and very friendly staff. The boutique is large, you can buy plenty of chocolate at a good price. Moreover the little café has nice products, although I found the tea and coffee to be very expensive. The tour is ok. You learn about the origins of the chocolate, and about how Nestlé and Cailler merged. A large room will display the main products used to make chocolate with recorded voices of the different workers from the producer to the farmer. They all explain how great Nestlé is, which I find a bit disturbing. I think that the museum should be free, because it is more an advertisement for Nestlé than a real tour on how chocolate is made. I found it a bit disappointing. You can only have a glimpse of the factory, but you will not see how all the chocolates are made, appart from the tiny "branche cailler" It's probably fun for small children, or in a day at Gruyère, but I would not go only for the short visit of Cailler. • ymt888 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Do you know that Cailler is the first to invent chocolate in a bar form? Fact - i did not know that Cailler is a Nestle product. We were in a tour group and had gathered some interesting facts from this visit. Maison Cailler is an animated museum. Our visit here gave us glimpses of some chocolate manufacturing operations. Apparently Cailler is not available for export and is found only in Switzerland. After the end of the tour, there was an area where you could generously sample some varieties of their produce. And the last spot is of course the gift shop where we bought many fresh chocolates home. It was really a sweet sweet memory of my chocolate factory visit. Read more Written May 12, 2020
  • patticha511 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Not just a regular chocolate factory My friends and I were in Montreux to go to the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, and we had a free day on Sunday. Since Broc was pretty close to Montreux, we decided to visit the Cailler chocolate factory. They do have a student discount, which was nice. It's a short walk from the Broc Fabrique train stop. You walk to the ticket office then into the main building, which houses both the museum, gift shop, and cafe. The tours are about every hour, and the train also comes every hour more or less. They have audio guides in various languages for the tour. You walk through a brief history of where chocolate originates from with amazing visuals and sound. After that, we walked into a room that showed the supply chain of chocolate from people that grow the beans to deliver the chocolate. Then comes the factory part, where you can see people making chocolate. Lastly, the most exciting part! Chocolate tastings. It's a great way to sample chocolates because there are no samples in the gift shops. They had about ten different chocolate samples. I really wish they had water because tasting all of them was really sweet. Read more Written March 21, 2020
  • reposriberac 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Really nteresting journey through all things chocolat Cailler Some friends drove us to the Cailler factory near the cheese village of Gruyere. The journey up from Lausanne was spectacular in itself. The original factory (a building architecturally interesting) still stands proud, dominating the mountainscape. The tour (aided by chocolate bar shaped audio guides which work really well) leads you through the complete history of the Caillier brand from 1819 to the present day. Along the way you will learn and begin to understand everything that goes into the making of quality chocolate. This includes lots of touching, smelling and finally tasting everything that goes into this delightful product. The tour finishes in the boutique where I imagine very few people leave empty handed! Well worth a visit. Read more Written March 2, 2020

Visit to Maison Cailler

Even if the weather is not so good, you can find a place where to take a family trip. One of them is undoubtedly the Maison Cailler – Swiss chocolate factory, founded r.1819. The strong smell of cocoa hits your nose even before you buy a ticket. And your mouth starts watering… 🙂

The Maison Cailler is located in the town of Broc in the canton of Fribourg.

Needless to say, if you pay a visit to this chocolate factory in rainy weather as we did, you should be prepared for the crowds of visitors and you’ll have to wait a while for a guided tour  (in our case it was about 50 minutes). But while waiting, you can take a coffee at a cafe, browse souvenir shop (the main item sold is the chocolate of course), or you can go to the cinema to see short advertisement movies of Cailler products or you can test your knowledge about chocolate in  “ choco quiz “.

This chocolate factory in western Switzerland has a fun multimedia tour telling the history of chocolate. It explains the chocolate making process through compelling personal stories, which is much more fun than dry facts.

Although you can’t see the live factory floor, you can observe chocolate being made in sample machines and watch videos of more chocolate machines. At the end of the tour, you can sample lots of chocolate.

They also offer chocolate workshops and a chocolate themed Escape Room as fun extras to make it into a full day activity. They have a large shop with special Cailler chocolates you can only buy here, a cafe with hot chocolate and chocolate snacks, and a fun playground.

We recommend combining this with a visit to the adorable hilltop village of Gruyères and the nearby La Maison du Gruyeres cheese factory .

By transit:

Opening times, chocolate tour, chocolate tasting, chocolate workshops, escape game, cafe & playground.

Note: Our most recent visit was hosted by Maison Cailler . Thank you!

The chocolate tours start every 15 mins. The tour group is small, about 20 people, and the personal audio guide is available in a variety of languages including English.

At your assigned time, your group will be led into a series of diorama rooms that provide a history of chocolate and chocolate making in Switzerland. It’s a little hokey but fun, lasting about 20 minutes or so.

Small kids might be frightened by the dark and some of the light and sound effects. But the tour is short and you only stay in each room a couple minutes.

Maison Cailler is the name of the Swiss chocolate factory in Broc , a small village near the famous Gruyères. In just a few years it has become one of the most visited places in Switzerland, so you should book a day or two in advance if you don’t want to wait in line for two hours like in August.

History of Cailler

Cailler is an institution in Switzerland and more since it joined Nestlé , a chocolate industry empire, pioneers in the production of the famous milk chocolate.

Its founder was François-Louis Cailler , who founded the company between 1818 and 1820, and today it is the oldest chocolate brand in the world.

After he had bought several factories and led the company to success, his son-in-law Daniel Peter took up the business again and invented milk chocolate in 1875. The success continued and fifteen years later, in 1890, the company invented chocolates.

In 1898, Cailler’s grandson Alexandre opened today’s chocolate factory in Broc in the heart of Switzerland, a deeply fertile region with pasture land.

The great crisis of the 29th also shakes Cailler to its foundations and prompts him to join Nestlé, the major Swiss food giant.

Thanks to the reputation of Cailler and its location in one of the most beautiful regions of Switzerland, the Maison Cailler was opened in 2010 , a place where you can discover the history of chocolate and of Cailler, as well as the production processes of this precious food.

What to see at Maison Cailler

Here are some of the things you can do or see in this fantastic museum dedicated to chocolate . We insist you book in advance. In July and August the queues are endless and it doesn’t matter if it’s sunny or rainy, it’s always full.

A journey through the history of chocolate and Cailler

The visit to the Maison Cailler begins with a walk through the history of chocolate. You take part in small groups of 10-12 people . During this pleasant walk, monitors announce your number and the time of entry. An elevator takes you down to a room where people talk about the origin of chocolate at the time of the Aztec human sacrifices.

Don’t expect super special effects or virtual reality, but it is a charming atmosphere that fits the spirit of the brand and the factory.

You will go through different rooms that explain the origin of chocolate, its development and its history in Europe, from its introduction to its relationship with Cailler.

The tour lasts roughly 20 minutes. You will be guided without a guide since the doors open and close to allow you entering into the different rooms.

Visit to the production process of Cailler chocolate

After the historical tour , the visit starts. The first large room shows us some bars with different actors in the chocolate making process, from workers from exotic countries involved in the production of chocolate to those who make it in the Broc factory.

With a simple audio guide, you can find out the functions of each one, while we participate with all our senses in the ingredients contained in Cailler’s chocolates.

After this first big stay, you can discover some of the secrets of making milk chocolate , but not all! The truth is that it is very interesting and entertaining.

For example, you will see machines that show you how the famous branches are created and other production processes.

A warning to all those with a sweet tooth: What follows can alter the heartbeat of more than one person. One of the highlights of the visit is the chocolate tasting . It all starts at a small stand where an employee will give you a taste of the stores, one of the stars of the company and one of its oldest products.

But we warn you not to get puffed up at this first tasting because you will then pass through a corridor where Maison Cailler proposes a sensory experience with the well-known Neapolitan ones. You can taste the ones you want, but we insist, leave space in your stomach if you do not want to allow yourself a binge.

Towards the end of the tour there is a chocolate room, where a member of the museum staff invites visitors to try different pralines and chocolate varieties. This is already pure chocolate pleasure. Remember that it is forbidden to take them out of the rooms, so only take what you can taste there.

Chocolate Workshop

Now that master chef cooking programmes are in vogue, why not emulate the great chocolate masters and make your own creations?

The Cailler Chocolate Museum offers lessons for groups of fifteen children aged 6 to 12. These lessons last one hour and cost CHF 25. Of course you must book them in advance.

If you are no longer a child and are enthusiastic about the world of chocolate, there are also workshops for adults that last two and a half hours. The price is CHF 75 and includes a visit to the Maison Cailler.

Chocolate shop

This is a real warning for museum visitors. The store is spectacular , well stocked and everything comes in through the eyes. If you’re a sweet lover or one of those who love sweets, or are one of those who likes metal boxes or fragile packaging, be sure to have your wallet ready, because you’ll be leaving here with a few bags.

The chocolate train

Those of you who do not have a car and are in the Lake Geneva area can visit the Maison Cailler thanks to the chocolate train . It runs from Montreux to the Gruyère region. Here you can spend an unforgettable day and visit the chocolate factory, but also the Maison du Gruyère where the famous cheese is made.

They will also give you free time to visit Gruyères and its fantastic castle. The train offers coffee and croissants and all transfers by bus to visit the factories.

The prices are 99 CHF for adults and 49 CHF for children, provided they have a Junior Card.
