3. At Tawba Mosque

With Saudi Arabia only recently opening up to international visitors, its beauty spots aren’t yet as recognisable (or overrun) as they perhaps deserve to be. The destination is home to Nabatean tombs to rival Petra, pristine dive spots that compete favourably with any of Egypt’s and great canyons that are as awe-inspiring as the well-trodden ones populating several American national parks.

The landscape is as diverse and layered as the country's ancient trading culture, which can be experienced in the souks of gleaming modern cities as well as around the desert homes of prophets and poets, princes and pilgrims.

The ochre deserts of the north give way to the white-sand atolls of the Red Sea coast and lush mountains and valleys of the south-western Asir region, home to rare Arabian leopards and Qahtani tribesmen donning floral headdresses. Much of the south-eastern region is covered by the vast Empty Quarter, the world’s largest sand desert.

With the country eager to welcome British visitors once it’s Covid-safe to do so, you’ll find a much warmer welcome than in more weary destinations – but, more to the point, staggering beauty that still feels as though you’re uncovering a thrilling secret. Here are eight spots you shouldn't miss.

Wadi Al Disah

Near Tabuk in the north of the country, the Al Disah Valley looks like an otherworldly mix of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley – an epic collection of sandstone columns in a vast hollow, where the dusty amber desert is interrupted by a valley of swaying high grasses and palm trees. Whether you get in on foot or by four-wheel-drive, make sure to be here as the sun casts an ethereal glow over the sculptural rock formations.

There are perhaps no more recognisable sights in Saudi than the monumental rock-cut tombs suspended in the majestic desert at Hegra, near Al Ula in the heart of the kingdom. If these 131 enigmatic mausoleums recall the ancient ruins of Petra, that’s because they were built in the first century AD by the Nabataeans, the same nomadic warrior-traders behind Jordan’s wonder of the world. But while Petra hosts more than a million visitors a year, Hegra remains relatively undiscovered, attracting more wildlife than tourists. That might change in the next few years: Aman, Banyan Tree and Tulum-born Habitas are among the hotel groups opening eco- and heritage-sensitive camps around what could be one of the big destinations of the 2020s.

It’s not hard to see why this unassuming coastal town and region is often referred to as the Maldives of Saudi Arabia. To the north of the town, 104 atolls are scattered across a corner of the Red Sea that is most definitely turquoise. The quintessential Umluj activity is an island-hop – spotting dolphins on the way to outcrops including Jabal Hassan to snorkel, fish or laze on white sandbars, becoming as relaxed as the dugongs and hawksbill turtles that swim around these islets. This is also a world-class dive area; much quieter than Red Sea hotspots such as Sharm El Sheikh, but with a technicolour bounty of 1,200 fish species and 300 types of coral, four times as many as you’ll find in the Caribbean. Sustainable resorts are under development on a selected few islands, but most of the area is a thrillingly untouched natural aquarium.

Al Balad, Jeddah

Many Saudi cities have a historic quarter, often called Al Balad and marked by the scent of exotic spices and the beautiful cries of the call to prayer. Balad in Jeddah, Saudi’s cosmopolitan port city, is the most evocative of all – a series of tight alleyways between ancient coral-stone merchants' houses, home to oud sellers, clove-scented traditional bakeries and the vast, glowing Souq Al Alawi. Since it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, many of the area’s vast, crumbling mansions have been sensitively restored, including the grand 106-room Nasseef House – now a museum and cultural centre hosting art and photography exhibitions as well as lectures by academics. What’s more, galleries, mangour woodcrafting workshops and cool cafés are breathing new life into once-derelict buildings, giving a district built in the seventh century a bright future.

The Edge of the World

Just west of the capital Riyadh, the Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) is another aptly named geological wonder – a great towering wall of striated sandstone that rises improbably from the reddish plain of an ancient ocean bed. Best reached by four-wheel-drive, there’s an uninterrupted view from the top across the arid landscape, where wild camels can still be seen rambling across ancient caravan routes.

Few sites are more striking than the ancient desert city of Diriyah, wrapped in the green oasis of Wadi Hanifa just outside Riyadh. It was once a hotbed of culture, a historic crossroads for pilgrims and traders throughout the centuries, and the ancestral seat of the royal dynasty. Today Diriyah’s museums, such as the spectacular Salwa Palace, delve into the citadel’s storied past. Dotted around its magnificent mud-brick architecture and lining its palm-fringed avenues, restaurants and coffee shops also nod to tradition with Najdi plates such as gereesh bil laban , cracked wheat cooked in a yogurt sauce.

Al Qarah mountain, Al Ahsa

Brushing the eastern edge of the Shadqam plateau, Al Qarah remains one of the kingdom’s lesser-known destinations, despite its raw beauty. A majestic stretch of sand-blasted caves and canyons sculpted over millennia are best viewed from the summit of Al Qarah mountain, which rises 670ft above sea level. Clamber up its limestone cliffs, punctuated with a warren of honeycomb caves, nooks and passageways to explore along the way, for rewarding panoramic views. The place names here reveal a deep reverence for nature and the elements that have shaped the character and traditions of this region as rigorously as its landscapes. (Al Ahsa translates as ‘murmuring streams’ and the main city of Hofuf, ‘whistling wind’). Palm-tree farms and picturesque villages surround the mountains, their maze of artisanal shops and restaurants offering a shady refuge.

Rijal Almaa

Widely referred to as the Gingerbread Village, Rijal Almaa’s blocky stone buildings with bright shutters sit deep within a lush, verdant setting and have long been an attraction for travellers seeking rich culture and history. But it’s more than a beauty spot – most of the residents are from the Qahtan tribe, best known for the bright outfits and floral crowns worn by men, and celebrated at the Flowerman Festival every August.

During a recent interview with CNN, Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan bin Salman announced that the Kingdom would begin issuing tourist visas in 2018, among other reasons to reduce the dependence of the Saudi economy on oil. Kingdom Centre is such an iconic symbol of Saudi Arabia's capital that an emoji version of it shows up when you say you're "Traveling to" Riyadh on Facebook. A shopping mall and residential complex that's also home to an observatory (which is not surprising, since it rises 992 feet above the ground), Kingdom Centre is actually only the third-tallest building in Saudi Arabia, in spite of its fame. 

Certainly, it will be a great place to begin any Riyadh city trip once Saudi Arabia opens up to tourists, offering visitors both figurative and literal perspective on the bustling national capital of 5.2 million people, which is also home to the Kingdom's main airport. Empty Quarter

Although the vast majority of the aptly-named "Empty Quarter" technically belongs to Saudi Arabia, there are no borders here—it's just sand, after all, with nothing different about it between Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. On the other hand, the Empty Quarter (which is known in Arabic as Rub' al Khali) is far from boring, whether you come on a camel safari, to drive 4x4s through the dunes or to visit with the nomadic tribes who call this seemingly inhospitable place home.

A number of places in Saudi Arabia are accessible to independent travelers once visas start being issued, but this is probably a destination for which you'll want to have a guide. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find your way out of sand dunes alone? To say nothing of all the rodents and scorpions who call this area home—it's best to set up camp according to the recommendations of someone who knows the lay of the land!

Coral Houses of Jeddah

The Red Sea port of Jeddah is known as a relatively liberal and open city; from lax enforcement of the country's strict rules about female attire, to the generally laid back attitude of the people. Here’s What You Need to Know Before Visiting Saudi Arabia

For the first time in its history, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced that will be opening its doors for tourism by issuing an electronic visa for visitors coming from 49 countries — including the United States.

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for an eVisa . It costs approximately $120 and is valid for a period of one year with an option for multiple entry, and permits a maximum stay of 90 days in the country. Previously, the Kingdom issued only visitor visas for religious pilgrimage and business visas. This monumental announcement is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reform program, Vision 2030 , which aims to reduce the country’s reliance on oil and diversify its economy by way of tourism and entertainment.

Over the past two years, the government has also announced the launch of several ambitious projects, including an entertainment mega-city in Riyadh (reportedly, twice the size of Orlando’s Disney World ), a futuristic beach destination along the coast of the Red Sea, and restoration of UNESCO World Heritage sites. By 2030, the government expects 100 million annual visits, increased foreign and domestic investment in hotels and associated amenities, the creation of million jobs, and an increase in tourism revenue from the current 3% to 10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, according to Reuters.

To attract Western tourists and market itself as a tourist destination — on par with neighboring Gulf states— Saudi Arabia has eased some of its conservative restrictions, like granting women rights to drive and travel without a guardian, curbing the powers of the moral police, permitting unmarried tourist couples to rent hotel rooms, and relaxing dress codes.

Within the first 10 days of the introduction of the eVisa 24,000 visitors entered the Kingdom, according to Arab News . Although there is a lack of adequate tourism infrastructure, those curious to learn about and experience the country will find Saudi’s natural landscape and its welcoming locals incentive enough to visit.

Public spaces may be segregated, and you will find separate entrances or seating areas for men and women. Refrain from public displays of affection.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country. While non-Muslims are welcome and permitted to practice their religion in private spaces, preaching in public forums or on social media platforms is prohibited. Malicious propaganda against the country, government, and religion is a severe offense.

Social customs

You will find locals to be hospitable, generous, and as equally curious about you as you may be about them. It is not uncommon to be invited to share a meal or a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) and dates. Your hosts — and even strangers — will want to extend their welcome and offer a token of their hospitality, like food or even a small gift. It is considered rude to refuse such an offering. Just remember, always accept and consume food and beverages with your right hand.

If you are invited into a Saudi house, remove your shoes, unless your host insists you keep them on. In a traditional Majlis, (a sitting hall with floor cushions) you are expected to sit on the floor. If hosted elsewhere, you can expect a modern setup with armchairs and other furniture.

Saudis encourage and welcome Westerners asking questions about their culture. To avoid offending local sensibilities, it's best to steer clear of political or religious topics of conversation.

Familiarizing yourself with Saudi rituals like greetings and handshakes will always make a favorable impression with your hosts. “Marhaban!” (Welcome) is a common way of greeting and you may respond with “Marhabtain” (I give you two welcomes).

Men shouldn’t extend a handshake to a Saudi woman, unless she does so first. To err on the side of caution, place your hand over your heart and greet with a hello.

Saudi Arabia: Mecca is now off limits to holders of all types of visit visas

Access to the holy city restricted for one month to Hajj pilgrims

Cairo: Beginning Thursday (today), holders of all types of visit visas are not allowed to enter or reside in the Saudi city of Mecca for one month, the kingdom’s Interior Ministry has said, in the lead-up to the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.

The ministry said all types of visit visas do not serve as a Hajj permit for the holder, and urged holders of such visas not to head to Mecca during the announced duration.

Violators will be liable to penalties under the kingdom’s laws, the ministry warned.

Saudi government agencies have embarked on implementing security and operational plans aimed to ensure safety for the eligible pilgrims during next month’s Hajj rites.

Hajj is one of Islam’s five obligatory duties. Muslims, who can physically and financially afford Hajj, have to perform it at least once in a lifetime.

As of June 2, Saudi Arabia will enforce penalties against Muslims caught trying to illegally perform Hajj in and around Mecca.

Violators of Hajj regulations, be they citizens, foreign residents and visitors, are liable to a fine of SR10,000.

Violating expatriates will also be deported and barred re-entry of the kingdom. The fine will double on repetition.

A person caught transporting violators of the Hajj-related instructions and illegal pilgrims, meanwhile, faces jailing up to six months and a maximum fine of SR50,000. If that transporter is an expatriate, the offender will be deported from the kingdom after serving the term.

Satellite Images Show Massive Theme Park Taking Shape in Saudi Arabia

A massive new water and theme park is being constructed in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, part of yet another megaproject commissioned by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of his vision to turn the kingdom into a top tourism destination.

When it's finished, after years of delays, Acquarabia will become Saudi Arabia's first water park and also among the largest on Earth. New satellite imagery provided exclusively to Newsweek from Maxar Technologies shows the park beginning to take shape ahead of its grand opening scheduled for next year.

Located in the Tuwaiq Mountains, 25 miles from downtown Riyadh , Acquarabia is part of Qiddiya City, a new entertainment complex that itself is part of bin Salman's Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 program intended to diversify the country's economy away from oil. The park will span more than 2.5 million square feet and feature 22 rides and attractions, including what's being billed as the world's tallest water coaster and water slide.

Acquarabia's extreme watersports zone will offer activities such as rafting, kayaking, canyoneering, free solo climbing, and cliff jumping — all marketed as an easy 40-minute drive from the capital and its main international airport.

As part of Qiddiya City, Acquarabia will be joined by a brand new Six Flags amusement park, featuring the world's tallest, fastest and longest rollercoaster, as well as a Formula One race track. The complex will also house the world's first themed Dragon Ball park, dedicated to the popular anime series.

While the costs for the park's construction have not been disclosed, real estate consultancy Knight Frank has estimated the Qiddiya megaproject to cost $9.8 billion. Like other Saudi megaprojects currently under construction, the park is being financed by the country's sovereign wealth fund, known as PIF.

Construction of the water park first began in 2019 with plans to open the first phase by 2023. After missing that deadline, work on both Acquarabia and the Six Flags is now scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Qiddiya is one of several ambitious megaprojects currently underway across Saudi Arabia, joining the likes of the planned megacity NEOM and its flagship 'vertical skyscraper' dubbed The Line, as well as the construction of what will be the world's tallest skyscraper in Jeddah.

Smaller scale cultural initiatives, such as last week's historic swimsuit fashion show , are all part of Crown Prince bin Salman's strategy of boosting Saudi Arabia's global image at a time when the kingdom — and bin Salman personally — have come under fire for a wide array of alleged human rights abuses.

The country, which is an absolute monarchy, is regularly criticized by groups like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International for its record on issues from women's rights to freedom of speech to its use of the death penalty and the silencing of dissident voices like Jamal Khashoggi , the Saudi-American journalist who was murdered in 2018. U.S. intelligence agencies believe bin Salman personally approved the operation that led to his death, which the crown prince has denied.
