Meet joe norman – voyage denver.

July 3rd, 2020

Joe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. I graduated with a degree in Product Design from Stanford and worked with design consulting firms for a number of years before teaching middle school and customizing vintage motorcycles. For the past eleven years, I have been a full-time sculptor, focusing on handmade and site-specific works informed by the intersection of the natural and human-made environment.

I was the Artist-In-Residence at Great Basin National Park, am an Associate Member of the National Sculptor’s Guild, and frequently speak on art and its role in social justice. My work is in permanent public and private collections across North America and am represented by galleries in Colorado, Utah, and California. I currently maintain my studio in Loveland, CO.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but then again I didn’t sign up for that.  I think some of the biggest struggles involve managing a business and concurrently participating in the art world, because those two don’t always intersect with each other.  I think there’s a feeling within the contemporary art world that somehow business and money are corruptions of true expression, and we involve them as a necessary evil. I think that’s silly and simplistic; business and money are tools we have to make the world a better place. If that negatively influences what we’re trying to communicate through our art, that just means we don’t understand how to use those tools.

So, I suppose what I’m describing is the struggle to be professional, just like what we expect of lawyers, finish carpenters, and college professors. That includes showing up, charging what my time is worth, and knowing when I’ve messed up.  Speaking of messing up: years ago, I was selling my blood plasma to pay for steel for a sculpture, and it didn’t go well — I’m not a big fan of needles. Afterwards, I realized what a poor series of choices I had made to put myself financially on that edge. I hadn’t priced previous work high enough to sustain my business, and I was playing into the ridiculous and damaging image of the ‘starving artist’. Sitting in my truck in the parking lot outside the plasma center I light-heatedly vowed never to put myself in that position again.

We’d love to hear more about your art. I specialize in creating art for public places. This means I most often work with a combination of public entities, private individuals, and businesses to place sculpture that not only resonates emotionally and intellectually but enhances the context.  A typical project includes coordinating with structural engineers, fabricators, city works departments, and community stakeholders to develop the artwork in a safe, maintainable, visually cohesive, and resonant way while remaining within the budget and on time.

I think the world of artists is an ecosystem rather than a purely competitive marketplace; many of us bring different skills and backgrounds and bounce ideas and approaches off each other in any given project. A couple of the things I feel like I bring to that ecosystem include a background in engineering (so I can figure out how to actually make the things we envision) and experience in design consulting and working with teams.  Inevitably I lean on the scores of fantastically creative people in my community. Without a doubt, there is someone passionate about something I need to know (in which I’m a total moron). For example, I recently finished a project that included a hydrological toxicologist, non-contact LED engineers, and a drone pilot.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood? Riding bikes. It was like being able to run as fast as a car.  I had no idea at the time, but now my love for bikes is augmented by what I know of their place historically as engines for equal rights and the democratization of mobility. And, even the ugliest bike still looks really cool; I commute to my studio on a Schwinn from 1967 that was my grandmother’s.

A snazzy new minibus in town whisks away weekend drinkers to three popular wineries in Loudoun County and brings them back to D.C. by dinnertime.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vineyard Voyages (@vineyard.voyages)

Vineyard Voyages is designed to eliminate the need for a designated driver, paying for gas, or ordering multiple Ubers with round-trip tickets starting at $79.99 per person. The pick-up and drop-off point is the West Falls Church Metro stop’s bus area ( 7040 Haycock Road, Falls Church, Virginia ). The 7-hour excursion, from start to finish, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The 18-seater’s maiden voyage off Metro’s Orange line is Saturday, May 18. Seasonal tours operate Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the Fourth of July). The vineyard-hopping excursion makes 60- or 90-minute stops at each winery.

To start, Vineyard Voyages partners with eight (mostly) family-run vineyards — all situated amongst the rolling hills of Loudoun County’s lush wine region — that are split into three types of regionals tours. The “Colonial Grapevine” option includes stops at Two Twisted Posts, Williams Gap Vineyards, Hillsborough Winery & Brewery; the “Piedmont Journey” is a day trip to Casanel Vineyards & Winery, Firefly Cellars, Fleetwood Farm Winery; and the “Valley Vine” excursion hits three wineries around picturesque Shenandoah Valley (Otium Cellars, Botati Winery, Hillsborough).

The bus promises plush seating, overhead storage, USB ports to stay charged, and an on-board guide offering tidbits about Virginia’s rich winemaking history along the way. Vineyard Voyages’ locally based founder Christian Hoeffel is a global wine tour connoisseur of sorts, having sipped his way through six continents.

“From South Africa to New Zealand, the best experiences always included well-organized tours [that] let me enjoy multiple wineries without worrying about driving, offered flexibility in what I tasted, and sometimes even included special perks,” he says.

After moving to the D.C. area, he was excited about diving into the thriving wine scene. But he found existing options were “expensive, restrictive, or too narrow in scope,” he says.

Vineyard Voyages guests get discounts on bottle purchases at wineries, he says, along with various perks like an extra pour with a tasting purchase, a coupon for a free tasting on the next visit, or a sip of a selected wine for all guests. There’s also group discounts and all-inclusive tasting packages.

Book before May 18 to get a free 12-ounce stainless steel tumbler branded with its logo.

Minnesota Timberwolves v Denver Nuggets - Game One

The 2024 NBA conference semifinals are in full swing as the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets meet again this evening. The second game of the teams' semifinals series gives the Nuggets a chance to tie up the series.

Keep reading for everything you need to know to watch tonight's Timberwolves vs. Nuggets game even if you don't have cable.

How and when to watch the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets game

Game 2 of the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Playoffs series will be played on Monday, May 6, 2024 at 10:00 p.m ET (7:00 p.m. PT). The game will air on TNT and stream on Sling TV and the platforms featured below.

How to watch the Timberwolves vs. Nuggets game without cable

If your cable subscription doesn't carry TNT or you've cut the cord with your cable company, you can still watch today's game. Below are the platforms on which you can watch today's game live.

Save $25 on Sling TV: The most cost-effective way to stream the Timberwolves vs. Nuggets game

One of the most cost-effective ways to stream today's NBA playoff game is through a  subscription to Sling TV .  To watch today's game, you'll need a subscription to the Orange tier, which includes TNT and ESPN. For access to more NBA playoff games, upgrade to the Orange + Blue tier (recommended), which includes the games played on ABC.

The Orange tier is normally $40 per month, but Sling TV has an offer for new subscribers where you can get your first month for $15. The Orange + Blue tier costs $35 for your first month, and $60 per month after that. There's also an NBA playoffs package deal where you can save $30 when you pre-pay for three months of service on any tier. You can cancel anytime.

Note: Because Sling TV doesn't carry CBS, you won't be able to watch CBS-aired live sports, including the NFL. If you're looking for one live TV  streaming platform to watch all your favorite sports , we suggest a subscription to  Hulu + Live TV.

Top features of Sling TV Orange + Blue tier:

  • There are 46 channels to watch in total, including ABC, ESPN and TNT.
  • You get access to NFL games airing on ESPN next season at the lowest price.
  • All subscription tiers include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR storage.

Hulu + Live TV/ESPN+ bundle : Watch the Timberwolves vs. Nuggets game live for free

You can watch today's game with the  Hulu + Live TV/ESPN+ bundle . The bundle features 95 channels, including ABC, TNT, local network affiliates and ESPN. It also includes  the ESPN+ streaming service . Unlimited DVR storage is also included. Watch today's game, the 2024 NBA playoffs, MLB this season and network-aired NFL games next season with Hulu + Live TV/ESPN+ bundle.

Hulu + Live TV comes bundled with ESPN+ and Disney+. It's priced at $77 per month after a three-day free trial.
