Ambitious VR Experience Restores 7,000 Roman Buildings, Monuments to Their Former Glory

Ever wish you could step into a hot air balloon, travel back in time to 320 A.D., and soar over the streets of Ancient Rome? Well, that oddly specific fantasy is achievable in a new virtual reality experience called “ Rome Reborn .”

The ambitious undertaking, painstakingly built by a team of 50 academics and computer experts over a 22-year period, recreates 7,000 buildings and monuments scattered across a 5.5 square mile stretch of the famed Italian city. The project, according to Tom Kington of the Times , is being marketed as the largest digital reconstruction of Rome to date.

Director Bernard Frischer , a digital archaeologist at Indiana University, tells Agence France-Presse that “Rome Reborn” features multiple VR experiences: You can opt for a whirlwind flyover tour of the city or stop by a specific site, such as the Roman forum or the Basilica of Maxentius .

For now, the forum and basilica are the only two landmarks available for in-depth exploration, but tours of the Colosseum, the Pantheon and other top attractions are expected to debut this year or next.

The “ Flight Over Ancient Rome ” experience, currently available via VR headsets and computers, takes participants on a roughly two-hour highlights tour that includes stops at more than 35 points of interest, including the imperial fora and palace, the Circus Maximus, and the tombs of emperors Augustus and Hadrian. All of these sites are seen from above, providing a unique aerial perspective the website touts as a chance to see “how the individual buildings and monuments fit into a larger pattern of urban organization.”

Comparatively, the two site visits place users in the driver’s seat, affording them freedom to roam through reconstructed streets and halls while learning key facts via a helpful in-app tour guide. The Basilica of Maxentius , a monumental civic building commissioned by the emperor Maxentius prior to his defeat at the hands of rival Constantine, is particularly impressive due to its vibrant interior and restored statue of the conquering emperor, who later oversaw the Roman Empire’s transition into a Christian state.

The Forum, a marketplace of sorts that served as the center of the ancient city, also reveals an impressive attention to detail: As archaeologist Paolo Liverani of the University of Florence explains to the Times ’ Kington, researchers used studies on the flooring of the Forum—including an illustration found on the Arch of Constantine —to render the virtual model accurately. VR experts even collaborated with historians to ensure that sunlight correctly bounced off of the Forum’s gold-gilded statues.

Frischer tells AFP that he and his colleagues chose to set their virtual world in 320 A.D. because they had the most information on that period, which allowed them to go into greater detail. Additionally, he explains , the year represented a critical turning point for Rome, as it experienced a burst of architectural energy and saw its population cross the 1 million threshold. Just 10 years later, Constantine moved the imperial capital east to Constantinople , signaling the end of Rome’s position as the center of the empire.

Today, little of the sumptuous world seen in “Rome Reborn” remains, a fact emphasized by the app’s “Time Warp” feature. By toggling between the structures’ past glory and present-day dilapidation, history lovers gain an even greater appreciation of just what was achieved during Rome's glory days.

Ancient Rome comes to life with Virtual Reality Bus

Tourists can experience the rome of 2,000 years ago with 3d bus tour..

This summer Rome launched the city's first Virtual Reality Bus, an immersive 3D experience which brings to life the central archaeological area of the capital.

It is now possible to travel among the ruins of ancient Rome and discover how they were 2,000 years ago, with the Virtual Reality Bus, a 16-seater vehicle equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Passengers on the electric bus can view the Imperial Fora, Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus and Theatre of Marcellus thanks to "visor free" VR displays, with all imagery created by visual effects specialists under the guidance of archaeologists.

All the 3D displays are visible directly on the OLED screens superimposed on the windows of the bus, with a system of motorised curtains that allows passengers to compare the present with the past.

“The VrBus project will allow visitors to literally immerse themselves in the history of Rome", said the city's mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who described it as a "one-of-a-kind initiative" that will take tourists and Roman residents "on a journey to discover Rome's past."

Imperial Rome - Virtual Reality Bus is active every day from 16.20 to 19.40 (last tour), departing from Piazza della Madonna di Loreto, at the Trajan's Column end of Via dei Fori Imperiali.

The tour, lasting 30 minutes, is available in Italian and English. Tickets can be bought online or at the ticket office near Trajan's Column. For full details see website .

The ultimate Ancient Rome tour experience

We booked this activity for 2 adults and a 9-year-old who is fanatical about Ancient Rome - this tour was excellent for both adults and children alike. You wear the headset and can view the exterior, interior, and the underground of the Colosseum as it would have been. Very fascinating and gets the children's imagination going! The staff is also very friendly and helpful - I wouldn't hesitate to book with them again. Thank you

The best virtual reality of the Colosseum you'll find!

This was amazing! Perfect for anyone who doesn't like the usual tour guide activity. This small-group virtual tour was amazing! We went in through the gladiator entrance, and it was a special experience to see how the Colosseum looked back in the day. Out of all the sites visited, the Arena Floor was incredible to see and stand where the gladiators used to fight. The tour required wearing VR glasses. I felt a bit silly surrounded by people with the headset on, but soon I got over it, and it was a great tour.

Imperial Rome – Virtual Reality Bus: begin your journey back in time!

Roma Imperiale - Virtual Reality Bus: begin your journey through time!

Rediscover the original splendor of ancient monuments reconstructed in 3D by riding a bus through Rome’s central archaeological area

Who among us has never wished to take a trip back in time to discover how a place looked centuries and centuries ago? In the case of Rome, then, the wish is even greater. For the city is littered with the remains of marvelous monuments and architecture, which arouse in anyone who observes them the curiosity to know how marvelous they must have looked in their ancient entirety.

Today, thanks to new technologies, it will be possible to peek back through the centuries and find out! From June 23, in fact, thanks to the exhibition Imperial Rome – Virtual Reality Bus , it will be possible to admire, on board a small electric bus, the three-dimensional reconstruction of the ancient monuments of the Capital. This is a 3D immersive experience tour, due to special “visor free” VR technology. All reconstructions of the architecture are enjoyed directly on OLED screens superimposed on the windows of the bus, and a system of motorized curtains will allow people to admire the beauties of today and compare them with those of the past.

VR-BUS

All of this is supported by sounds, music and an integrated fragrance emission system specially developed by Integra Fragance s in order to ensure a truly immersive experience. In addition, thanks to the Movx patent (with 3 Gps, a three-axis accelerometer, a magnetometer, a velocimeter and a surface laser) it is possible to synchronize the speed and position of the bus in real physical space with those in virtual space, recording and reproducing every movement, curve, pothole or bump.

Are you ready to experience this amazing adventure? Just sit in the electric bus, equipped with 16 seats, traveling at an average speed equal to that of a scooter, and simply look out of the windows. The approximately 30-minute route will wind through the heart of Rome’s historic center, from the Imperial Forums to the Colosseum, from the Palatine Hill to the Circus Maximus to the Theater of Marcellus. The traveling exhibition was created by Invisible Cities , a start-up created by Arsenal 23 with the support of Linkem and the collaboration of visual effects specialists and archaeologists.

It should also be noted that the VR Bus is totally electric; therefore, it will be possible to enjoy the show with full respect for the environment.

Virtually enter the imposing structure of the Circus Maximus . Look around. Precious marbles; columns; temples. A triumph of pride and grandeur. Did you know it could accommodate nearly 385,000 spectators? Hear the sound of the trumpets. These announce the beginning of the Pompa Circensis, the triumphant entry of the emperor followed by a parade of chariots; musicians; dancers and ornamental floats.

After learning the history of Rome and the Circus Maximus , all that remains is to participate in the competition. Put on the VR viewer for the last time and become the protagonist of the long-awaited chariot race. So, choose the faction; the color of the horse; grab the controller and go. Run as fast as you can. Overtake opponents. Avoid spectacular crashes and crashes like in the Ben Hur movie. Oh, no you fell! Wipe away the sweat and stand up. Force. You only have 7 laps around the plug to complete in order to win the winning prize. 1 million sesterces, the crown of that time and the crowd around you cheering and cheering on the new winner. Will it be you?

 • After 16 years of working as a tour guide in Rome , I've figured out the best attractions.

Rome is pretty crowded — the city welcomed a record-breaking 35 million tourists in 2023. Any gorgeous photos you see of breathtaking and empty piazzas were likely taken long before most people have woken up.

As a seasoned Roman tour guide for the past 16 years, I would never say certain attractions have no merit. But after years of interacting with travelers , I understand that people want alternatives.

Luckily, Rome has priceless art and artifacts around every corner.

Here are five popular attractions that are worth visiting, and five you might want to skip.

The Park of the Aqueducts is beautiful and full of history.

A Roman vacation isn't complete without a trip to Ostia Antica.

Step back in time and explore the remarkably well-preserved ruins of Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport.

The archaeological site offers a quieter and less time-consuming alternative to the crowds of Pompeii a little farther south. Visitors can wander through ancient streets, houses, and Roman theaters in a more peaceful setting than the Roman Forum.

Plus, you can enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea after your visit .

On the other hand, the Vatican Museums are overcrowded.

Although the Vatican Museums are undeniably home to some of the world's most renowned art collections, they're almost always swarming with tourists.

The crowds and long queues can detract from your overall experience. In peak season , the Vatican easily sees 20,000 to 30,000 visitors a day.

It's virtually impossible to admire the art as you're shuttled through each gallery until everyone spills into the Sistine Chapel . Even the bathroom lines can be a 30-minute wait.

Unless you are willing to spend a lot of money on an official tour before the museums are open to the public or visit in the offseason , you should consider alternative attractions.

You can get a good view of the Colosseum without going inside.

As iconic as it may be, the Colosseum can be overwhelming, particularly during peak tourist seasons .

Its historical significance is undeniable, but exploring the ancient amphitheater can be a challenge among the swarms of visitors.

Acquiring tickets is also tricky. We often have to time our online purchases perfectly, refreshing the page in 10-minute intervals. Tickets sell out quickly and are sometimes resold by large companies.

Consider alternative viewpoints or guided tours for a more personalized experience. I also like taking in the exterior around 9 a.m. or in the evening when it lights up.

Walking the Appian Way might be a letdown.

The Appian Way is significant in Roman history as the oldest and most important road. But its appeal may be lost on the average tourist.

Nowadays, there are loads of bike and bus tours to the Catacombs along the road — making it crowded — and public transport there is difficult.

I suggest visiting the Park of the Aqueducts instead. It's an easy metro ride from Termini Station and offers a glimpse into what the Roman countryside would've been like.

Although undeniably one of Rome's most famous landmarks, the Trevi Fountain is often teeming with tourists jostling for the perfect selfie.

The sheer volume of visitors can detract from the fountain's beauty and significance, making it challenging to appreciate it in peace.

If you insist on throwing a coin in, go as early in the morning as possible — otherwise, it's a zoo.

Everyone wants a photo in front of the Trevi Fountain — and that's the problem.

Although undeniably one of Rome's most famous landmarks , the Trevi Fountain is often teeming with tourists jostling for the perfect selfie.

The sheer volume of visitors can detract from the fountain's beauty and significance, making it challenging to appreciate it in peace.

If you insist on throwing a coin in, go as early in the morning as possible — otherwise, it's a zoo.

Made famous by its appearance in classic films like "Roman Holiday," the Mouth of Truth may not live up to the hype for many visitors.

According to medieval legend, the stone mask will bite off the hand of any liar who enters its mouth, which has made it popular with tourists.

But the brief photo opportunity doesn't justify the long queues. I wouldn't wait in line for the Mouth of Truth.

Plus, it was probably just used as a drain cover in the Temple of Hercules.
