Warpaint are an incredible band, and they put on a very impressive live performance. You can tell that they spend a lot of time jamming and improving songs they have already written, which makes for an exciting show. You never know what to expect from each song, they spice it up differently every time. They all seem very relaxed and into it. Jenny, Emily, and Theresa all have a special (yet very awkward) dance they do while they play; it's very charming. Stella is mind blowing... She carries the band. The best part of the performance is the jam they usually do at the end of the set. They have such a powerful connection as musicians. Its magical-funky-psychedelic. One criticism I would have is that Theresa Wayman seems to put her guitar down way too much for all the tracks from the latest album. Her voice is a little pitchy, so I would have preferred to hear her on lead guitar and have Emily sing, like they did for more of their older tracks. Emily's voice is really on point (I'm pretty sure Jenny Lee's mic wasn't even on...). I also found it strange that Wayman was in a spotlight for the whole performance. She was wearing a bellyshirt, and it didn't have the same vibe as any of the live performances from a few years ago that I had watched online. Kinda strange.

HOOO BOY, I LOVE Warpaint. This past show in Boston (at the Royale, which was an interesting choice of venue for them) is only the second time I've seen them but I can sincerely say that they're one of my absolute favorite bands to experience live. First off, there's this realness that really dictates the performance throughout the ENTIRE show. There's a lot of jamming and a lot of improvising that we're finally starting to see out of more younger, alt bands (haim!) but Warpaint's had it going on from the get go. Second, even though they're one of my favorite bands I tend to get pretty tired of listening to them pretty quickly. BUT there's this new energy that backs them up whenever they perform anything and it makes listening to an oldie but a goodie like Undertow sound like you're experiencing the song for the very first time and it's really magical. Their songs sound way more Raw and Intense when you're able to stand there in front of them and gyrate with them while they also jam.

It's a super sensual and intimate experience and I'm glad to see that they're back.

Huge fan of the band. They get tighter and more powerful each time I'm fortunate enough to catch one of their shows. Warpaint boasts wonderful stage presence and an undeniable chemistry. The sets are always a good mix of spacey melancholy and hard hitting songs, with some serious dance grooves thrown in the mix. It's hard to stop moving your feet and swaying along with Jenny, the bands bassist. For sure one of the most impressive live bands I've seen to date. I'm sure they will continue to impress for years to come.

An absolutely amazing performance from Theresa, Stella, Emily and Jenny. It's my first time seeing them live and they've done a great job, especially in the setlist where they controlled the tempo of the show really well. A generous amount of interactions between them and the crowd, even better when they kind of pretended to forget how to play "New Song" in the beginning of it.

Nonetheless, if they happen to come to near you, just go there and have some fun.

Brilliant. This band is super tight, their sound so well layered and composed that I was inspired. The vocal coordination between all members is impressive enough on the records, especially the latest LP, but to see it live was delicious. As a drummer, Stella's hybrid kit was encouraging to see—that one can mix electronic with acoustic so well. I can't wait to see them again, though I don't think they get to Australia too often.

I'll have to move to LA

It was absolutely mindblowing. Must have been one of the most beautifull pieces of music I have heard. It was melancholic enchanting and sweeped me into a soothing trance. Very unfortunate they showed up rather late and played only close to an hour. Would have loved to have been swept away even more! Will definitely see them again!

This was the third time I've seen Warpaint live, and they have yet to disappoint! As great as their recordings are their live show is even better, full of energy and you can see how much they're enjoying themselves. Warpaint are an incredibly talented band and one that you don't want to miss!

Saw them at Albert Hall in Manchester on one of the first days of spring. I've described them before as some sort of nymphs rocking it out in between chants. They're just incredible artists and human beings, extremely unique. It was an experience of love. I left in a state of evaporation.

Warpaint Are Hitting The Road In 2022 For Tour Dates Around The World

Derrick Rossignol

In just a couple weeks, Warpaint will release Radiate Like This , their first album in six years. Right before the May 5 release date, the band will kick off a run of tour dates , they announced today.

The trek starts with some UK and European dates in May and June. After a bit of a break, the band will take to North America in July in August. Overall, their schedule includes stops at festivals like Psycho Las Vegas Festival and Spain’s Primavera Sound.

As for the new album, the band’s Theresa “TT” Wayman previously said of recording it, “We got really lucky because the foundation of what we’ve recorded was recorded together. It would feel really disjointed if we had to write it from scratch from afar. It’s actually been amazing that we’ve been separate and had time to record the top layers and we can get even more considered with them. It’s really helping us that there are no time pressures and money constraints. […] I’ve been thinking a lot about lyrics and so I’ve been thinking about [Bob] Dylan a lot and how he strings a story together. He finds these perfect ways to say something that is so normal, it’s something that everyone experiences, but he unlocks this great metaphor for it.”

Warpaint tell us about their “psychedelic” 20 years together and new single ‘Common Blue’

Theresa Wayman and Jenny Lee Lindberg talk to NME about their nostalgic new single, their highs and lows of two decades together, once being labelled "Satanic", returning to Rough Trade and what the future holds

Warpaint have celebrated their 20th anniversary with new one-off single ‘Common Blue’. Check it out below, along with the band telling us about their two “psychedelic” two decades in rock.

It was 20 years ago today (February 14) that the indie quartet first came together on Valentine’s Day on Fairfax Boulevard in Los Angeles. Now to celebrate, they’ve shared new single ‘Common Blue’ along with a nostalgic new music video.

“It feels like an accomplishment,” singer and guitarist Theresa Wayman (aka TT)  told NME , reflecting on a career that has seen the Los Angeles band – also featuring singer and guitarist Emily Kokal, bassist and singer Jenny Lee Lindberg and drummer Stella Mozgawa – release four celebrated albums straddling art rock, dream pop and psychedelia.

Lindberg added: “I feel like there’s so many lives lived in the last 20 years. Different scenes, every couple of years something changes up. To look back to 2004, it feels like I’ve lived many lives. And it’s also gone by so quick too that it’s a trip, it’s psychedelic.”

‘Common Blue’, their first new material since 2022’s ‘ Radiate Like This ’ album, finds the band back on their original UK label Rough Trade after a stint with Virgin Records. They spoke about this reunion, their influence on rock equality and the shock of once being labelled “Satanic” by NME…

Hello Warpaint: The band was born in a small studio on LA’s Fairfax Avenue on Valentine’s Day 2004. Was that a sign?

Wayman : “Yeah, of true love. We were all boyfriendless or dateless and had nothing to do. Obviously something works because we’ve been doing it for so long and haven’t stopped and we’ve only gotten closer. It’s definitely been a four-way marriage. It’s love.”

What have been the highs and lows?

Recommended.

W : “Getting on the cover of NME , that was a fun one. We just were like, ‘What is going on? This is so cool’. We didn’t grow up with the NME , so we didn’t really know what we were getting into. And then all of a sudden we were on the cover, [with the coverline] ‘Satanic Majesties’. It was a really special moment although a little alarming. ‘Satanic? What?’ But that was a reference to something…”

The Rolling Stones.

W : “At first we didn’t get that and we thought we were just being pigeon-holed. Because a lot of people like to put ‘siren, witch, Satanic’…”

Lindberg: “It’s four girls, so they must be witches!”

How have you seen attitudes to women in rock bands change over 20 years?

W: “There are more bands, more women. People are so much more conscious about having that equality, I think. But I felt like we were always welcome when we were doing our thing. I don’t think we ever experienced anything overtly sexist or we were never looked down upon. I feel like we were always given a fair chance and we took ourselves seriously in enough ways that…”

L : “That it leant other people [the chance] to do the same, I think.”

Warpaint

You’ve been pioneering in that sense.

L: “Yeah, like next generation pioneers. It’s so normal now, women in music and all-female bands. It’s just like the new normal, it’s just what’s happening and I think that’s amazing.”

The video for the single highlights live performance and travelling as the two elements you’re celebrating the most. What have been your most memorable shows and adventures?

L : “Going to Iceland was pretty amazing and otherworldly, at least to my eyes. We’ve been around the world many times – at this point, sadly, it feels like normal, a little regular. But Iceland stands out in my mind as being a pretty phenomenal trip. My mind was blown.”

W : “Do you remember that Polish festival we played? We had one of our biggest audiences we’ve ever had, out in the backwoods, in the country in Poland. It was the most raging, amazing show we’ve ever played. We were in this tent and it was incredible because it was at this stage in our career where things just kept getting bigger and bigger and we just didn’t expect that. It seemed like a place where no-one would know us and we got there and we were in this tent and it was just an epic show.

“The audience was so into it and it was loud and fun and we were in a good flow with each other, it was just really great. When you’re travelling so much, you’re just in that gruelling, get from one place to another, trains, planes and automobiles [mode]. It’s those moments on the stages that really, really matter, and going all over the world and having that, it’s really special. Mexico and then South America, certain places are really warm and welcoming.”

Is it fitting to be back on your original UK label Rough Trade for this single?

L : “Yeah. Very full circle.”

W : “Everyone’s really excited about it. We separated and dated…”

L : “We opened the relationship.”

W : “Yeah, we were dating for a little while, now we’re back. It just feels like home and we know everybody, it’s like a lot of the same people all still working there. They have such good relationships with each other that it’s just like the same crew there. And we really have known them for so long so it feels really good, like family.”

The message of ‘Common Blue’ seems to be to make the most of life while you can – is it intended as an inspirational anthem?

W : “That’s definitely what it means. I think the chord progression that started it, I felt inspired by that. I took that over to Jen’s and we started playing it and pretty quickly it came together with a few different parts and we structured it. I don’t even know how the ‘maybe baby’s came about but that definitely feels like some inspirational message. I think it’s just inherent in it and it just evolved that way.”

There are also hints of overcoming hardships as well: “pain will come as advertised ” for instance?

W : “It starts off needing to burn something down because you just need to have a new perspective, which can’t always be a comfortable thing. But I think sometimes it takes something extreme like that to be able to move on and maybe do something that you need to do for you. You have to do something extreme for your own personal growth sometimes, or in order to get a different perspective.

“It’s really easy to get into a rut sometimes and it’s hard to change habits. But it’s also referencing being a band for as long as we have. How do you change and evolve while you’re in involved in relationships that have known you for so long and maybe you’ve moved on from how you were 20 years ago?”

How would you describe your evolution over the last 20 years?

W: “We’re more mature. We’re able to communicate better and listen and be compassionate to each other and maybe less ego driven.”

L : “I’d say more open and there’s more calm energy. I guess I could just speak for myself but I feel more calm than I did when we started. More grounded and certain of myself. I feel like we’re all going through that – the forties are a new deal, a good new deal.”

Where are Warpaint at in 2024?

L : “We’ve a tour coming up in May, we’re going to release this song and I feel like we’re probably going to take a little bit of a break. We don’t really have anything on the books for the summer. I think Emily’s going to work on some solo endeavours – it’s kind of ambiguous. We know for the foreseeable future we will be taking some time off, but it’s not like ‘oh, we’re taking a year off or two years off or three years’. After May we know that we won’t be doing anything.”

W : “We’re trying to try to see what’s next for us that’s not the same patterns we’ve been in since 2010, when we signed and started doing album cycles. That was amazing but now things need to shift. So maybe just stepping out of that pattern we’ve been in and seeing what else can we do, like writing songs for the TV show that Stella produced. That kind of thing is a new evolution of what we can do, so just opening the door for that kind of stuff.”

‘Common Blue’ backed by b-side ‘Underneath’ on blue vinyl on Rough Trade on March 22, 2024. Pre-order it here .

Flickers of calypso … Warpaint at Belgrave Music Hall.

Warpaint review – spellbinding symbiosis from a band of true agility

Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds Strong new songs are welcomed warmly by the faithful as the quartet’s easy rapport gives each member the chance to shine

“T his is not a record store,” quips Emily Kokal, surveying the crowd. As artists strive to shift copies, in-store album launch shows have become something of an obligation; a short showcase of new wares generally delivered in stripped-back arrangements. Nearly two decades into their career, Warpaint make it clear that they will be doing no such thing. This is an opportunity to really revel in one another’s company, to celebrate their latest release with low-pressure intimacy and warmth.

In a room of committed attendees, new cuts are welcomed greedily. They begin with origin song Stars and quickly move on to Champion , the lead single from Radiate Like This (the new album, released today). Cutting through their trademark moody grooves, it has a lovely upbeat glitter, an invitation to embrace your inner cheerleader. Melting is delivered beautifully a capella, small flickers of calypso snaking around the four-part harmony: “No more armour / no anxiety.” There are refreshingly few phones in the air, fans preferring to capture the moment in their loosening limbs.

Emily Kokal of Warpaint.

The delight of a Warpaint live show is truly in the detail. All four members seem to untie complex knots from their instruments, working with the spellbinding agility of expert Rubik’s cubers. The rhythm duo of Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass) and Stella Mozgawa (drums) are particularly accomplished, providing the sturdy current beneath Kokal’s and Theresa Wayman’s more experimental vocal/guitar waves. Old favourite Love Is to Die still elicits the biggest cheer but Disco/Very is an aptly named closer, much more dynamic live than it is on record.

All good bands can learn to sound polished with time, but the communication in Warpaint feels more instinctual, a sisterly symbiosis that allows each member to shine without diminishing the lustre of the whole. It’s a difficult trick to get right, much less to perform it with this much calm and cool.

Warpaint – Champion (Music Video)

“Making this album was a labor of love,” says the band. “It is the joyous culmination of four musical minds over the course of a few wild and heart-opening years. We’re thrilled to finally share it with you.”

The album features previously released singles ‘ Hips ,’ which Uproxx describes as “infectious” and “eerie”, ‘ Champion ‘, praised by Stereogum as a “masterful reintroduction” to the band, and ‘ Stevie ‘,  which arrived alongside a video made in collaboration with Fascinated By Everything (watch the fully immersive video made for Oculus here and the 2D version here ).

Additionally, the band recently confirmed the Radiate Like This tour, kicking off next week in Europe with a run of U.S. dates beginning in July. Stops include a hometown show in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Washington D.C. and more — see full routing below and purchase tickets here . Belief , the side project of Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa and L.A. producer Boom Bip, will support on the east coast dates, with Goldensuns and JennyLee supporting on west coast dates.

In the six years since 2016’s much-lauded Heads Up , Warpaints four members — Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, Stella Mozgawa and Theresa Wayman — have been busy living. Babies, jobs, tours, solo albums, intercontinental and cross country moves all became priorities, presenting mounting logistical challenges to getting the band back together, as they say, and allowing a little space to think “what if we didn’t?”

Eventually, though, each of the women found themselves drawn inexorably back together. Warpaint is as much a home for them as a band, having been together for nearly 20 years. They had just completed the foundational tracking sessions with co-producer Sam Petts-Davies (Thom Yorke, Frank Ocean, Skullcrusher) when the pandemic hit and they were forced to retreat to respective safety.

What followed was the making of a wholly different Warpaint album. Physically separated by the pandemic, each musician recorded her parts separately—often in makeshift home studios—before sending on to the next, creating songs layer by layer. Deciding to delay the release until they could tour allowed them to further hone each track, spending more time building and rebuilding than they had in the past. The result is a body of work that is sharper and more focused than any of their previous, each song as tight, beguiling and proud as a diamond.

“I was saying the other day that we should’ve called  this  album “Exquisite Corpse”, but it was already taken,” jokes Kokal, referring to the title of the band’s debut EP. Radiate Like This captures what’s always been the magic of Warpaint—the delicate interplay of four separate parts coalescing in motion—while somehow allowing each individual to shine a little brighter.

The band will make their live return with a run of shows in the U.K. and Europe this spring with global dates to follow. See full tour routing below.

Warpaint is Emily Kokal (guitar, vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals), Stella Mozgawa (drums, vocals) and Theresa Wayman (guitar, vocals). Radiate Like This follows their critically beloved debut EP Exquisite Corpse , 2010’s The Fool , 2014’s Warpaint and 2016’s Heads Up .
