An enchanting land of pink sand and turquoise waters — discover that paradise is in fact a reality. Bermuda may be so British that the police are constables and the countries share a royal family, but the traditional Bermudan breakfast is codfish, potato and banana — yep, this island puts its own spin on tradition. Sail on Carnival's Bermuda cruises and you'll experience this unique cultural cocktail, along with a serious helping of natural beauty. This palette of an island, combining green hills, pastel-colored homes, and pink-sand beaches makes the perfect backdrop for world-class golf, glass-bottom boats, swimming with dolphins, mountain biking and shopping. And thanks to the mild, comfortable climate, tea time's an outdoor event, year-round. Treat yourself to a getaway that's both proper and perfectly relaxed when you choose one of Carnival's cruises to Bermuda.

  • Local Hotspots

Aerial of the City of Hamilton

Alluring natural wonders and deep cultural traditions have sparked mystique and attracted adventurers to Bermuda for centuries. Today, cruising to Bermuda offers a world of fun and flavour for the whole family, all found within a compact, easy-to-explore 21 square miles. Plus, a reliable ferry service makes getting around the island a breeze. Follow this three-day cruise itinerary to get a fulfilling taste of island life in Bermuda.

Only have a day to explore? Check out one-day itineraries.

CRUISE INTO DOCKYARD, GRAB LUNCH & EXPLORE THE SOUTH SHORE

You’ve docked in the  Royal Naval Dockyard , a former British Royal Navy stronghold dripping with maritime history. The 19th-century barracks surrounding the port once kept guard over the West End but now house the treasure-filled  National Museum .

An award-winning playground and  dolphin sanctuary  are pulls for the younger family members, but head straight to the Hall of History mural to get some quick perspective first. Local artist Graham Foster has colourfully chronicled Bermuda’s history on the two-story wall; take a few minutes to admire his awe-inspiring depictions before diving into the main attractions.

The Commissioner's House sits on a rocky bluff with blue skies in the background

It’s ideal to explore the area on foot. Stop at must-sees like The Arts Centre , Dockyard Canvas to see local craftspeople at work. While you're here, get a three-day bus and ferry pass and start planning with a locally made scoop (or two) of Alex & Pete’s Artisan Ice-Cream in hand. It’s a 10-minute bus ride to lunch at local-favourite Woody’s to enjoy their famed fish sandwich dockside. After washing it down with a cold ginger beer, get back on the bus – look out for the pink stop – to head to the astonishing South Shore Beaches .

It wouldn't be a proper Bermuda cruise itinerary without plenty of time to explore the island's breathtaking beaches. There are several stops to choose from: Church Bay is a snorkeller’s paradise thanks to a network of shallow reefs close to shore. Horseshoe Bay is one of the world’s most photographed beaches – the wide crescent of soft, pink sand and crystal-clear water make a great starting point for exploring nearby coves, and the on-site rental concessions,Horseshoe Bay Live, and changing facilities provide everything you need for a great day at the beach.

Further east, Warwick Long Bay , known for having some of Bermuda’s pinkest sand, stretches for half a mile and is great for swimming. Elbow Beach gets its name from the curve of its shoreline and offers a long stretch of pristine sand. Whichever you choose, it’s impossible to go wrong.

View of warwick long bay pink beaches.

Hop on a bus back to Dockyard with enough time to freshen up in your cabin and grab a bite before taking a Gosling’s Rum Tasting Cruise with Fantasea . This quintessential twilight Bermuda cruise departs from Dockyard at 7:30 pm. It’s not only a way to learn about rum – perhaps Bermuda’s best-known export – but a great way to learn about Bermuda overall. Cruise along as captain, crew and Gosling’s ambassadors regale you with historical morsels and personal tales of the gorgeous homes you see along the way. At the end, you’ll have the chance to purchase rum duty free.

FERRY TO ST. GEORGE’S, SHOPPING, SNORKELLING & LIVE MUSIC

The second leg of your Bermuda cruise itinerary begins with a little island-hopping. While it’s one country, the archipelago of Bermuda is actually a ribbon of 181 islands that take on the shape of a fish hook. A fine way to see it is from the water, and during cruise season, Bermuda's ferry runs from end to end. Take the early boat from Dockyard to St. George's to spend a day in the former capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Town of St. George .

Browse local shops such as Confections, with its tasty gourmet cookies, and Long Story Short, with its local literature and unique goods. Pop into  The Things We Love for bohemian fashions, and savour the sweet scents of indigenous flora at Lili Bermuda , a perfume shop housed in photogenic Stewart Hall.

Long Story Short – Long Story Short In St. George's

Browse local shops such as the handmade  Salt Spray Soap Company , local literature and goods at  Long Story Short ,  The Island Shop  and the sweet scents of indigenous flora at  The Bermuda Perfumery  housed in photogenic Stewart Hall.

Grab island-style lunch from  Mama Angie’s , a mom-and-pop food stall by Somers Garden, and take a stroll through the grounds. Legend has it that the heart of the town’s namesake, the Admiral Sir George, is buried there.

Take a cab or minibus from  Kings Square  to  Fort St. Catherine , a stunning 17th-century fortress and museum overlooking Achilles Bay. Go exploring or beach it further down the coast at Tobacco Bay . The latter is a laidback spot, made remarkable with its unique limestone rock formations and coral reef, popular with snorkellers. Snorkel gear is available for rent, there’s a fun pool table right on the beach, and live entertainment flows frequently. The terrace serves frozen cocktails and beach snacks to an island soundtrack. It’s an easy place to spend an hour or two.

Three friends are playing pool on the beach.

Catch the Orange Route ferry back to Dockyard in time for dinner onboard the ship and venture out again for live music at  Bone fish Bar and Grill  before hitting late-night venue  Snorkel Park .

PRE-DEPARTURE SHOPPING & LUNCH WITH A VIEW

With an afternoon departure, there’s plenty of time for a morning excursion, so stretch out the final hours of your Bermuda cruise itinerary accordingly. Take the 20-minute ferry to the  City of Hamilton , the island’s business centre and capital.

The loop around Front Street  to  Queen Street  to  Reid Street forms the main shopping route for your island souvenirs. Grab a cup of joe at Rock Island Coffee – it’s made from beans roasted in-house – and snack on freshly baked pastries before browsing the shops. Discover classic Bermuda style at The English Sports Shop , vivid T-shirts at Flying Colours , hand-painted ceramics and glassware at The Island Shop , and a pink-sand charm from Alexandra Mosher or ocean-inspired blue jewellery from Davidrose .

A couple are standing in a store shopping.

On Front Street, find a table on the terrace of the Pickled Onion for a quick lunch. Start with the Bermuda Fish Chowder, served with a dash of black rum and sherry peppers, while you look out on Hamilton Harbour . Then, order the Bermuda Rockfish tacos or the Dockyard Brewing Co. beer-battered fish and chips and wash it all down with the microbrewery’s local beers – the Somers Amber Ale is a popular English bitter style – or a traditional Dark ‘n Stormy .

Catch the fast ferry back to Dockyard, your final on-island cruise before Bermuda calls again next year.

How to Spend a Long Weekend in Bermuda: 4 Days in Bermuda Itinerary

Posted on Published: November 1, 2019  - Last updated: March 17, 2024

Categories Bermuda , Blog , Caribbean , Travel Guides

Bermuda Itinerary

Justin and I spent four wonderful days on the gorgeous island of Bermuda. To say that we fell in love with Bermuda is an understatement. From the sights to the people to the food, we had an incredible getaway. For those in the eastern parts of Canada and the USA, definitely put a weekend in Bermuda on your vacation radar. Located east of the South Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is a quick flight , especially for those living in Toronto or New York City. A weekend in Bermuda will give you a great taste for the country, but extending your stay to 3 or 4 days is ideal.

Weekend in Bermuda: Our 4 day itinerary for Bermuda

Here’s our Bermuda 4 day itinerary, which you can condense into 2 or 3 days by choosing the highlights that interest you most. Justin and I visited Bermuda in October, although you can use this itinerary for many months throughout the year. April through October is the best time of year to visit Bermuda. Once you reach the winter months, it does tend to get a little cooler there. However, this can mean less crowds and cheaper prices. I thought that Bermuda in October was a great mix of both: the weather wasn’t as hot as in the summer, but there were less crowds and we could still enjoy the beach.

Bermuda Itinerary Day 1: Arriving and Exploring

We flew in to Bermuda with Air Canada from Toronto Pearson Airport. From there, we took an airport taxi to our hotel, the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club . Justin and I were pretty tired from waking up so early for the flight. We primarily spent this first day relaxing by the pool and exploring our immediate surroundings. Plus, we ate food. Eating is important!

Where to Stay: Hamilton Princess & Beach Club

Where to Stay: Hamilton Princess & Beach Club Bermuda

One of the best places to stay in Bermuda is the luxurious Hamilton Princess and Beach Club in Hamilton, Bermuda. It’s formerly known as the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, though it’s still currently managed by Fairmont Hotels. We absolutely adored staying at this five star property. The staff go above and beyond, there are fantastic restaurants on site, and the infinity pool is simply fabulous. Every suite has a beautiful balcony with spectacular views.

If hotel location is important to you, consider staying at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club. It’s located along the Hamilton Harbor, meaning that you can easily walk into the downtown area of Hamilton with many shops and restaurants. You can also easily take public transportation from Hamilton all over the island.

Book your stay at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club with free cancellation and no prepayment necessary. Check out more reviews by fellow travelers who have experienced this hotel.

Stop for Lunch at Cafe Eden at ABC Natural Foods

Cafe Eden at ABC Natural Foods - Vegan in Bermuda

Cafe Eden is a smoothie bar and cafe nestled inside a small health food store called ABC Natural Foods . They serve breakfast and lunch, and conveniently update their menu daily on their Facebook page. We ate veggie burgers and tasted some of the most delicious tropical fruit smoothies.

It is an all-vegetarian cafe so if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or love healthy foods, this is the place for you. ABC Natural Foods has lots of prepared vegan meals and snacks, ideal for residents and visitors alike. If your accommodation has a kitchenette or cooking space, stock up on delicious ingredients and meals from ABC Natural Foods. You can discover all of the vegan and vegetarian options in Bermuda at our Vegan Guide to Be rmuda .

What to See in Bermuda: Front Street in Hamilton

What to see in Bermuda - Front Street in Hamilton

After settling in to your hotel, venture out to explore the city of Hamilton, Bermuda. Front Street is the place to be. It’s the main road in Hamilton that runs right along the harbor. There are many brightly colored buildings, boutiques, and restaurants on Front Street. A weekend in Bermuda would not be complete if you didn’t spend at least a small amount of time wandering around Front Street and Hamilton, by day or night. Check out more details and photos of Front Street here.

Dinner at 1609 Restaurant and Bar

1609 Restaurant and Bar in Bermuda - What to eat in Bermuda

The 1609 Restaurant is right on site at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club Hotel. It’s a convenient and delicious choice for anyone staying at the hotel. Of course, visitors from outside the hotel are welcome to dine there, too. Smart casual attire is recommended, and I also suggest that you call the hotel for dining reservations.

Back when we visited, it was easy to enjoy a yummy vegan meal that was specially prepared for us by the chef. Back in 2014, we had to mostly request vegan meals, which was absolutely no problem. The chef can cater to any dietary restrictions. However, upon viewing their current menu, there are several vegetarian and vegan offerings. There are vegan tacos, Beyond Burgers, and even a Beyond Meat kebab.

It’s refreshing to see that half of the menu is vegan or vegetarian. 1609 ranks as one of the top hotel restaurants in Bermuda by Fodor’s Travel. Definitely dine at 1609 Restaurant if you have the opportunity during your weekend in Bermuda.

Weekend in Bermuda Day 2: Island Eco-Tour

Weekend in Bermuda - Island eco-tour exploring caves, beaches, and more

We embarked on a full day tour of Bermuda with Ashley of Hidden Gems Bermuda. It’s an island tour exploring the lesser known gems of the country, and we can’t say enough good things about our experience. Ashley has lived in Bermuda for her entire life and knows all of the best spots. She took us around to places we wouldn’t have known about on our own.

It’s an all-inclusive, fully interactive, island eco-tour that’s kind to the environment and supports local businesses. Some of the places we visited:  Tom Moore’s Jungle, the Blue Lagoon, Subway Cave, Walsingham Cave, the Black Horse Tavern for lunch, St. David’s Lighthouse, Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, Long Beach, and Admiralty House Park.

3 days in Bermuda - Admiralty House Park for cliff jumping and caves

If you don’t want to invest an entire day in a tour and you’re looking for other things to do in Bermuda, here are some great tour ideas for you that are a few hours in length:

  • Bermuda Catamaran Experience : A half day tour with sailing, swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, and the famous Bermuda drink, Rum Swizzles!
  • Half Day Sightseeing Tour of Bermuda : Stops at pink sand beaches and the dockyard with historical facts from your guide
  • Kayaking Eco-Tour : A 3.5 hour kayaking tour around Bermuda’s pristine coastline with a break on a secluded beach
  • City Tour of St. George : A guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site with trips to historical landmarks
  • Bermuda Sunset Cocktail Cruise : Embark on a 90 minute sunset cruise aboard a 50 foot catamaran with Rum Swizzles and tropical juice

Dinner at Marcus (Hamilton Princess & Beach Club)

When we dined at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, we went to Intermission Restaurant inside the hotel. Nowadays, Marcus is open (by world class chef, Marcus Samuelsson) so we recommend that you dine there. While the menu is always changing, the vegan options on the menu include a BBQ Butternut Squash Bowl, the Beyond Burger, and a few salad options.

Bermuda Itinerary Day 3: Take a Beach Day

Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda - Best beaches in Bermuda - pink sand beaches

You can’t visit a place like Bermuda without enjoying the beaches. While in Bermuda, we tried a brand new sport for us…surfing! We had so much fun surfing in Bermuda, that we’ve since tried it in a few other countries around the world, too. If surfing isn’t your thing, you can try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skiing, or snorkeling. There are so many water activities to try in Bermuda. There’s always the option of simply relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sunshine. Visit one of the numerous beaches in Bermuda .

Lunch at the Jasmine Lounge (Fairmont Southampton)

Jasmine Lounge at Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda

We enjoyed a light lunch at the Jasmine Lounge inside the Fairmont Southampton Hotel . From the Hamilton Princess , we took a complimentary ferry ride across to the Fairmont Southampton right near Horseshoe Bay Beach. Then after lunch, we took a complimentary shuttle from the hotel to the beach. The restaurants at the Fairmont hotels are some of the best places to eat in Bermuda for fine dining.

Surfing with Isolated Surfboards at Horseshoe Bay Beach

weekend cruise bermuda

Justin and I had a total blast going surfing in Bermuda . Our instructor was with the local company, Isolated Surfboards . We met up at Horseshoe Bay Beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches that I’ve ever seen. It was the perfect place to try surfing for the first time as there were varying sizes of waves crashing to shore. If you’re looking for a different water sport to try during your weekend in Bermuda, give surfing a shot. Though I did plenty of falling on my face, it was a lot of fun to try a new sport. Justin ended up being quite good at it!

Snacks at the Frog & Onion Pub (Royal Naval Dockyard)

We worked up quite the appetite after surfing and had lunch at the Frog & Onion Pub after a taxi ride to the Royal Naval Dockyard. The veggie burgers, fries, and onion rings really hit the spot. Take a stroll around the Royal Naval Dockyard while you’re there, too.

Bermuda Fun Golf

Bermuda Fun Golf - Mini Golf - Weekend in Bermuda

Our main reason for visiting the Royal Naval Dockyard area was to play mini putt at Bermuda Fun Golf . It’s one of the greatest mini golf courses we’d ever experienced. The holes were modeled after professional golf course holes. It takes the idea of mini putt to the next level. If you’re into fun and games (who isn’t?), be sure to add Bermuda Fun Golf to your Bermuda itinerary plans.

Dinner at The Terrace on Front Street

When we visited Bermuda, we dined at Red Steakhouse and Bar. It was quite funny that two vegans ended up dining at a steakhouse, but the chef prepared such delicious meals for us. As it turns out, Red Steakhouse no longer exists and the owner has transformed the establishment into a spot called The Terrace .

I checked out their menu and they’ve got a few vegan offerings: Jay’s Curry (veggies and chickpeas with a coconut curry sauce), vegetable risotto, beet salad, garden salad, and pizza. The vegan items are clearly marked on the menu.

Bermuda Weekend Trip Day 4: Crystal Caves, Scooters, and More

Public transportation in Bermuda - Weekend in Bermuda

Alright, so you might decide to spend 3 days in Bermuda, but I hope you’re able to extend your stay to a fourth day. We ended up leaving on the fourth day, but our flight was later at night. That way, we were able to explore the island for one more day before traveling back home. Whether you’re using this blog post to plan your Bermuda 3 day itinerary, a long weekend in Bermuda, or four full days of fun, I’m sure you can take advantage of these following activities, too.

If it isn’t windy or raining outside and you’re comfortable with riding a scooter, I highly recommend that you rent one and ride it around the island. Tourists aren’t able to rent cars, but you can easily get around with a scooter and a map. If you aren’t comfortable with renting one and don’t want to spend a small fortune on taxis, there are many public transportation options in Bermuda that are easy to use.

Crystal Caves

Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave in Bermuda - What to see in Bermuda

It’s possible to reach the Crystal Caves easily by public bus. The public transportation system in Bermuda is excellent. You can also travel there by scooter, if you wish. At Crystal Caves, there are actually two caves at this site: the Crystal Cave and the Fantasy Cave. It’s possible to buy tickets to either caves right on site when you arrive without any reservations. However, if you like to plan in advance, you can book a tour to Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave that comes with transportation (a great option of if you’re visiting Bermuda from a cruise ship).

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to visit both caves, but you should check them both out if you get the chance. It’s one of the best Bermuda attractions and it’s one of the best caves I’ve ever seen. Definitely check out Crystal Caves if you love taking a peek underground to witness magical scenery.

Renting Scooters in Bermuda

Renting Scooters in Bermuda - 3 days in Bermuda Itinerary

There are many scooter rental places in Bermuda. We used the one located right next to our hotel – Smatts Cycle Livery. You can rent them by the day. We only used ours for a couple of hours, but we could see how this was the best option for exploring Bermuda on our own. Even though we only rode around on scooters for a short while, it was a highlight from our Bermuda itinerary.

Whether you’re spending a weekend in Bermuda, a longer weekend or 3 days in Bermuda, 4 days or a week (or even longer!), there are so many things to do in Bermuda. It’s such a gorgeous little island and we completely fell in love with it. I’m sure you will, too! Please let us know if you visit Bermuda and what you loved the most.

Cruise ships set to sail in and out of Baltimore again

Follow WTOP’s latest coverage of the Baltimore  Key Bridge collapse and ongoing recovery efforts

After weeks of suspended vessel traffic within the Port of Baltimore, cruise lines are announcing their return and planning new trips out of the area . It’s another sign of progress after the Key Bridge was destroyed by a cargo ship that lost power and crashed into it in March.

In a blog post, Royal Caribbean International said that its “Vision of the Seas” ship will sail out of the Port of Baltimore on Saturday, May 25. That’s nearly two months from when the Key Bridge was hit, sparking a closure at one of the country’s biggest ports .

Vision of the Seas is embarking on a 5-night trip to Bermuda and back. But while it’ll be the first cruise ship to leave out of Baltimore, it might not be the first cruise ship to bring passengers back from the paradise.

This weekend, the Carnival Cruise Line ship “Pride” is due to leave Norfolk for a 7-night trip to the Bahamas. But at the moment, the Pride is scheduled to return to the Chesapeake Bay and keep going past Norfolk, docking back in Baltimore.

While sailing out of Norfolk, passengers could be transported by bus from Baltimore to Norfolk, which is about a 4-hour trip.

Carnival has maintained a presence in Baltimore for years, but at the time the bridge was damaged it was only sailing one ship out of Maryland, minimizing the impact the bridge collapse had on cruises.

CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg told WTOP that cruise lines normally operating out of the busy Baltimore port could see hundreds of thousands of passengers annually. The collapse pushed cruise passengers into ports in Philadelphia, Brooklyn or Bayonne, New Jersey .

Plans to allow recreational vehicles to enter and travel through the Port of Baltimore’s safety zone were confirmed by Maryland officials last week.

Carnival says cruise ship will return to Baltimore next Sunday, two months after Key Bridge collapse

Another cruise line says one of its ships will return to Baltimore next weekend.

A Carnival Cruise Line ship that rerouted its departure to Norfolk, Virginia, will return to Baltimore on Sunday as scheduled, the company said in a news release.

Last week, Royal Caribbean said a ship would be leaving Baltimore this coming Saturday “as planned.”

The Dali cargo ship was refloated Monday morning, and the Key Bridge Response Unified Command said Monday afternoon that a 50-feet deep, 400-feet wide channel will be open “soon.” The original 50-feet deep, 700-feet wide channel is expected to be fully restored by the end of the month.

While the ship was stuck in the Patapsco River following its March 26 crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, cruise ships have been rerouted through Norfolk.

“We are extremely grateful to the officials and incredible first responders in Baltimore, who’ve shown great leadership and resolve in this difficult time, as well as our supportive partners in Norfolk, whose rapid response allowed us to continue to deliver our scheduled sailings for our guests,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in the release. “It’s been our goal to resume operations in Baltimore as soon as possible, and after working closely with local, state and federal agencies, we look forward to a successful return.”

In 2023, Maryland Port Administration spokesperson Richard Scher said, 444,000 passengers boarded cruises in the terminal, the highest total since 2012. Eight cruise ships are scheduled to depart in June. The cruise terminal primarily services ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, and the Norwegian Cruise Line also occasionally uses it.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

weekend cruise bermuda

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

weekend cruise bermuda

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Parade, bike races, car show and more: What's happening in Somerville Memorial Day Weekend

SOMERVILLE - It's the biggest weekend of the year in Somerville.

With the Tour of Somerville , the country's longest running bicycle race, capping Memorial Day weekend on Monday, Somerville is getting ready for a series of events starting on Thursday to mark the traditional beginning of summer in the county seat.

Memorial Day parade

The Memorial Day parade , another Somerville tradition, is returning this year with a new time and route so it will not interfere with Tour of Somerville races.

“In January I made a promise, and now we are returning the Somerville Memorial Day Parade to the streets of our borough,” said Mayor Brian Gallagher. “We will proudly display true honor to those who have sacrificed for our country.”

The parade will start at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the corner of Culver and East High streets, then march west on High Street, then turn left on Doughty Avenue past the Somerville Fire Museum, turn left again on Main Street, and turn right on Bridge Street to the Somerville New Cemetery for a 10 a.m. ceremony at the cemetery's Veterans Circle.

Families participating in the Tour of Somerville's Family Fun Ride  may join the parade as it continues on Bridge Street to the cemetery.

Cruise Nights

Another Somerville tradition will be returning, as Cruise Nights begin on Main Street from 6 to 9 p.m.

For more than three decades, thousands have come to downtown Somerville on Friday nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends for what organizers say is the largest cruise night on the East Coast as classic vehicles line the street.

Legal Runaround 5K

The weekend starts 7 p.m. Thursday with the annual Legal Runaround 5K sponsored by the Somerset County Bar Foundation to benefit Steps Together, a Hillsborough nonprofit that supports Somerset County families facing medical crises.

The Legal Runaround also has children's races at 6:15 p.m. and a 3K Poker Walk at 6:25 p.m.

Registration can either be done online or in-person starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Veteran's Memorial Plaza on Grove Street between the county administration building and county jail. Both events will go through residential neighborhoods.

Summer Stage

Saturday starting at 6 p.m. is the first performance of Downtown Somerville's Summer Stage concert series on Division Street.

The first concert will feature the Tyrone Stackhouse Project.

The series will continue on Friday or Saturday evenings until Sept. 14.

Nationwide Ride for Freedom

At about noon Sunday, more than 350 veterans will pass through Somerville on motorcycles, SUVs, trailers and cars as part of Rolling Thunder's Nationwide Ride for Freedom to raise awareness of missing or unaccounted for American military personnel.

The procession will leave Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg at noon and take about one hour to pass through Somerville, from Route 22 to Mountain Avenue, then on West End Avenue to Main Street to Finderne Avenue in Bridgewater, before ending at Village Elementary School in Montgomery at 100 Main Blvd.

Tour of Somerville

The main event of the Memorial Day Weekend, as it has been for nearly 80 years, is the Tour of Somerville series of bicycle races. The day starts with the Family Fun Run at 8 a.m. which gives everyone a chance to pedal on the 1.1-mile race course through downtown Somerville.

After a break for the Memorial Day parade, the races begin again at 9:25 a.m. for all ages and categories.

The day climaxes at 3 p.m. with the 25-mile Mildred Kugler Women's Profession Race and the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial Men's Professional Race.

There will also be off-pedal competitions, like TriState Restaurant Group's 4 p.m. lemonade chug, 4:30 p.m. chicken wing eating contest, and 5 p.m. hot dog eating contest in the TriState Restaurant Group Community Zone on East Main Street in front of the Historic Somerset County Courthouse.

The presenting sponsor is Unity Bank with supportive partners Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset, Somerset County, Somerset County Business Partnership, Visit Somerset County, Land Rover Princeton, Clinton Honda, the Somerset Patriots, Downtown Somerville Alliance, Extensis HR, POP’s Bike Shop, Elk’s Club, Vie13 Kustom Apparel and Tito’s Vodka.

Trump announced a rally in the South Bronx. Dems are planning a counter-demonstration

When former President Donald Trump announced he would hold a rally in the South Bronx, New York Democrats decided the presumptive Republican nominee would not do so without opposition.

The two camps will face off at Crotona Park, where both events will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23. The Trump campaign said he plans to discuss inflation , the migrant crisis , and crime during President Joe Biden’s term in his remarks. State Democratic Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo, alongside civil rights activist and Rev. Kirsten John Foy, invited community members to gather at the opposite end of the park for an event called “Trump isn't welcome in the Bronx.”

“Trump holding a campaign rally in the South Bronx and not getting an answer from us” “Septimo wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Not on my watch.”

Why is Trump holding a rally in the South Bronx?

Despite living decades in his Trump Tower penthouse in New York City, Trump has declared Florida’s Mar-a-Lago his primary residence since 2019. Trump’s rally on Thursday will mark his first time in the state since 2016 .

“The Empire State, a place near to President Trump’s heart, has been decimated by Biden,” The Trump campaign said in a statement. “President Trump will ease the financial pressures placed on households and re-establish law and order in New York.”

According to the Office of the New York State Comptroller, the South Bronx is predominantly Hispanic (64%) and Black (31%) residents — two groups Trump is struggling with in the polls . Among Hispanic voters, Trump lost 11 points since the beginning of the year, according to a USA TODAY/Suffolk poll .

Trump’s rally will come days before next week’s final arguments in his ongoing criminal trial , which will take place in a lower Manhattan courtroom on May 28. The first former president was indicted on 34 felony counts by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for allegedly falsifying business records ahead of the 2016 election to conceal hush money payments made to women who claim they had sexual relations with him,  Stormy Daniels  and  Karen McDougal .
