Island Windjammer Cruises

Welcome aboard!

You’re about to embark on the best vacation of your life! We want to make sure that you feel comfortable every step of the way. Take a moment to read this short guide, with answers to the most commonly asked questions. If there is anything else you'd like to know, give us a call or email. We’re standing by to lend a hand!

WHERE IS THE SHIP DOCKED?

GRENADA : Port Louis Marina, St. George’s ST. MAARTEN : Dr. A. C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facility, Philipsburg ST. LUCIA : Capella Bay Marina, Marigot Bay TORTOLA : Village Cay Marina, Road Town

GETTING TO THE SHIP

It's a breeze to make your own way to the ship on boarding day! Taxis are readily available at hotels and guest houses.

HOW CAN I GET TO THE AIRPORT (OR MY POST-CRUISE HOTEL) AFTER MY CRUISE?

Your crew will assist you with arranging post-cruise airport or hotel transfers.

WHEN CAN I BOARD THE SHIP?

Grenada : 12:30 PM St. Lucia | St. Maarten | Tortola : 2:00 pm

Any changes in boarding information will be included with your final boarding instructions.

SUNSHINY DAYS

How’s the weather.

The weather is wonderful. Year round temperatures are typically in the mid 80’s, with fresh breezes during the day, and mid 70’s at night. Occasional rain showers are typical, but then the sun shines more brightly afterwards, as if to apologize!

WILL I GET SEASICK?

If you've experienced motion sickness in the past, or aren't sure how you'll adjust, please bring your preferred remedy with you. Most motion sickness medications aren't effective if taken after you start feeling sick. Play it safe if you're not sure, and take your medication before you set sail!

MONEY MATTERS

Do i need local currency.

The US dollar is accepted in most ports. Small denominations are best, as you may receive change in local currency.

The Euro is preferred in French ports.

Visa and MasterCard are accepted in most shops and restaurants. Avoid fraud alerts and pesky holds on your credit card by notifying the issuing bank of your intended foreign travel.

TIPS ABOUT TIPPING

A tip of $200 per guest, per week is suggested. Gratuities are payable by credit card at the end of your cruise.

STAYING CONNECTED… OR NOT

Will i get cell phone coverage.

Most cell phone carriers provide international roaming service on Caribbean networks. Call your provider to ensure you have coverage, and ask about cost-saving international service plans.

DO THE SHIPS HAVE WIFI?

The ships do not have WIFI. There are Internet cafés on some of the islands.

SIPS ON THE SHIP

Is there a bar on board.

You may help yourself to the included beverages at any time. If you'd like liquor that isn't carried on board, there is no charge to bring your own with you. Pick it up at the duty free on your way down, or at a local market before you board.

DO YOU PROVIDE MIXERS?

Depending upon availability, we provide Cola, Diet Cola, Sprite, Ginger Ale and Tonic Water.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS… AND OURS TOO

Can you play the kazoo? Have you mastered the art of strumming the guitar on your front porch swing? If you’re wildly entertaining, or mildly talented, bring your instrument along for the ride. Some guests enjoy center stage, while others just like to watch.

While we’re on the subject, bring your iPod, and take your turn at the dock. See what we did there? He-he.

DO YOU OFFER TOURS?

The Windwards The Windward Islands are small, beautiful, and far from the crowds. Island tours in some ports of call can be arranged with local taxi drivers. The main activities on the Windwards itinerary are swimming, snorkeling, strolling around local villages, and....relaxing!

The British Virgins | Leewards | French West Indies These Islands are larger, more populated, and have a wide variety of activities and things to do. The Operations Manager will review things to do on your own, as well as a variety of optional extra excursions (not included in your cruise fare).

OF BEACH DAYS AND BEACH SIPS Please do not bring beverages ashore from the ship, as local vendors earn their livelihood selling drinks and renting chairs in some ports of call. When permissible, the crew will bring a beverage cooler to the beach for your enjoyment.

HOW ABOUT SNORKELING AND SCUBA? Snorkel gear is available onboard at no cost. If you are interested in scuba diving, research diving opportunities prior to sailing, and make arrangements while on board.

LOOK SUNSATIONAL The sun can be your best friend and give you a big dose of vitamin D — or your worst enemy. We strongly suggest using a high SPF sunscreen, and applying it often. We want you to look like you’ve been frolicking in paradise, not bathing in a cauldron of hot water. While we’re on the subject of encouraging… avoid insect bites by using insect repellent anytime you are outside. Apply after sunscreen.

THE ESSENTIALS

What should i pack.

Dress on board is casual. Ladies and gents planning to dine ashore may want to pack a sundress or a pair of trousers. Bath towels are provided, as are hair dryers.

Cabins have A/C and 110V electric outlets. CPAP machines are okay to bring if you re-quire one. Pack light . Cabin storage space is limited. Did we say pack light ? Why yes, yes we did.

Have you been on a small ship cruise before?

No, this was my first.

First Windjammer style cruise and it was Awesome!

My wife and I just completed a week cruise with Island Windjammers aboard the Vela. We have wanted to take a Windjammer style cruise for years and after researching options we chose Island Windjammers Pirate Week as our first adventure. I have to say this was by far one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. After a brief time meeting the other ‘Pirates’, I knew this was going to be a fun trip. It was a diverse group of folks but we all had that Pirate mentality and were ready for a special week.

If you like lounging around a pool, spending time in the casino, going to shows, etc. This is not that type of cruise.

However… If you are adventurous and enjoy meeting people and seeing places you’ll never see while on a large cruise ship, then you’ll love this. We sailed into small coves with great snorkeling, beaches, hiking and dropping into local bars in very, very small villages.

The crew members were awesome. Leah and Andrew laid out each day’s activities, providing tips on the best snorkeling spots, hiking, shops and food options. Chef Robert along with Panchoo prepared some amazing meals. You will not go hungry while sailing Island Windjammers. Something I had not given much thought to was our ability to get to know the crew. Something you can’t do on a large cruise ship. I especially enjoyed sitting with Captain Patricio and talking about his life fishing and sailing.

I definitely will be sailing again and I hope our photos and stories will inspire our friends to join us. However, we established what I hope will be long friendships with our fellow Pirates.

Overall it was an amazing experience.

Sailing the Greek Isles is a luxury cruise aboard the Sea Cloud or Sea Cloud II, each an exclusive charter based on the historic windjammer Sea Cloud. Experience the Cyclades while under full sail aboard a romantic tall ship, relaxing on board while crew members climb the rigging and hoist the sails. Cruise alongside a team of expert guides who reveal the awesome history, culture and nature of the Greek Isles.

Cyclades are the Greek islands of the imagination, where colorful fishing boats are reflected in azure waters and whitewashed villages cascade down scrabbled slopes. They surround the sacred sanctuary of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in the western world. On the island of Tinos, explore the picturesque village of Pyrgos, adorned with carved marble facades, and visit the church of Panagia Evangelistria, Greece’s holiest shrine. Drop anchor at Amorgos and explore the city perched on a mountainside with beautiful domed churches and windmills. Sail inside the caldera archipelago of Santorini and walk the windswept vineyards of Oia before touring the excavations at Atrotiri, the ancient Minoan town perfectly preserved in ash after its desecration by volcanic eruption. Peruse famous pottery on the rugged island of Sifnos then stop into a waterfront tavern and walk along the welcoming shore.

Every moment of this organized mosaic of island jewels, historic substance, day-by-day living and Mediterranean flavor is as relaxing and magical as a Mediterranean cruise can be. Sailing the Greek Isles aboard the 58-guest Sea Cloud or 94-guest Sea cloud II perfects the atmosphere of elegance. Between bouts of history and mythology from expert guides, immerse in the contemporary culture and beauty of the Greek islands.

Read on for details about this trip, or learn more about AdventureSmith’s Greek Islands small ship cruises , Mediterranean cruises and Mediterranean trips .

Sailing the Greek Isles Aboard the Sea Cloud Fleet Itinerary

Sail through the Greek Isles in a historic fashion aboard a classic windjammer sailboat. This Greece cruise begins and ends in Athens, Greece, with transfers to embark and disembark the ship in Piraeus.

Route map of Sailing the Greek Isles aboard the Sea Cloud Fleet, round-trip from Piraeus with visits to Tinos, Delos, Amorgos, Santorini & Sifnos.

Arrive in Athens and transfer to Piraeus, where you will embark the ship in the late afternoon. Settle into your cabin and take in your first Greek sunset at sea.

Sea Cloud: Lindblad, Sea Cloud II: Lindblad

Your first morning on board is spent at sea, bound for the Cyclades and reveling in the blue magic of the Aegean horizon from your classic tall ship. Relax on deck with a book or journal. Watch the crew dance across the rigging to trim four masts’ worth of sails by hand. Attend interactive discussions led by your team of experts as they introduce the region’s history and ecology.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Drop anchor at the island of Tinos, a sculptor’s haven dotted with villages full of terraced hillsides, Venetian-era dovecotes and quarries renowned for their superb green marble. Explore the picturesque village of Pyrgos, generously adorned with carved marble facades. And visit the Church of Panagia Evangelistria. Built around a miraculous icon, it’s Greece’s holiest shrine–and thousands of pilgrims make their way here every year to pray.

The easternmost island of the Cyclades, Amorgós is a bit less frequented than many, but no less impressive. After dropping anchor, take in the beautiful domed churches and windmills of the main city, a scenic enclave perched in the mountains. Explore the Panagia Hozoviótissa monastery, clinging tenaciously to a cliff face above the sea. Like so many others in this region, it was built a millennium ago to protect a precious religious relic.

Venture into remarkable Santoríni—an island archipelago formed from a single volcanic cone that erupted 3,600 years ago to bury the resident Minoan culture in ash. Sail directly into the caldera and then drive through windswept vineyards to reach spectacular high views from the town of Oía. Tour the Archaeology Museum and excavations at Akrotiri, an important Minoan town preserved under volcanic ash like Pompeii, with well-built houses, streets, waterworks, pottery and art.

Designated a UNESCO site in its entirety, uninhabited Delos is an outstanding archaeological gem. In myth, it’s the birthplace of the twin Greek immortals Artemis (goddess of animals and the hunt) and Apollo (god of healing, music and light). Spend a morning surveying the Terrace of the Lions and exquisite Temple of Apollo, among the many incredible ruins preserved here. This afternoon, the adventure continues aboard the ship.

In the morning, set foot on a rugged island known for its flavors, its beaches, its 227 churches and its poets. A quaint harbor and scenic upper chora (village) invite exploration and tempting local comestibles can be found at a waterfront taverna. This is also a fine place for a brisk walk or a lazy stroll along the beach. As afternoon arrives, prepare to hoist the sails once more and depart for Piraeus.

Enjoy a farewell breakfast on board before disembarking and transferring to the airport for your flight home—unless you’ve opted for a post-voyage extension.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Accommodations Review

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Meals Review

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

Crew & Guides Review

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

September 10-14 & 17-21: Immerse yourself in the rhythm of shipboard life. Relax, read a book, engage in the lost art of conversation with your new shipmates, or hop in and help with the working of the ship. The schooner.

Manitou is one of the largest sailing ships on the Great Lakes, constructed with modern materials but similar in design to vessels that sailed one hundred years ago. She was built specifically for passenger service, making her one of the most comfortable Windjammers afloat.

windjammer cruise greece

Our licensed captain has many years of experience, and with the professional crew, you can rest assured you’re in good hands. Manitou meets or exceeds all U.S. Coast Guard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment and electronics for vessels in passenger service. If the wind should fail, the sturdy diesel engine powers her swiftly to the next destination. Because of her size and design, she ensures a comfortable relaxing sail for all. Manitou is two-masted, gaff rigged, topsail schooner, 114 feet in length with over 3,000 square feet of sail, and displaces (weighs) over one hundred tons. Up to twenty-four passengers can enjoy the pleasure and thrill of sailing aboard Manitou .

DESTINATIONS

Located at the base of beautiful West Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City, MI is the vibrant homeport for Manitou . Traverse City’s unique shops and galleries, as well as its many high-quality restaurants, are sure to enhance your sailing adventure.

Remove yourself from the trappings of modern life while aboard Manitou : no TV, phone (cell phones are discouraged), or email, and definitely no itinerary. The wind and weather conditions help determine our course, and after a good day of sailing we drop anchor at one of a variety of possible destinations. We may take in a little local color at a historic fishing village such as St. James on Beaver Island, or visit one of Michigan ‘s oldest general stores (est. 1839) while at Old Mission Harbor. The storekeeper will recount its fascinating history while serving up a genuine fountain soda or ice cream. Enjoy a little wine tasting in Omena Bay, or hunt for an ancient Petoskey Stone while beachcombing in Cathead Bay. A wealth of islands, bays, anchorages and coastal villages are within our reach.

ABOARD SHIP

Life aboard the Manitou is fun and informal. The object here is to slow down and take things as they come. Discover the lost art of conversation with newfound friends, read a good book, marvel at the breathtaking array of stars, get back in touch with yourself. Many folks have told us that this is the best stress reliever they have ever found. While underway, you are free to leave the sailing to our experienced crew or lend a hand and learn the arts of the sailor. After Manitou tucks into a snug anchorage for the evening, take out our sea kayaks or rowing dinghy for a little exploration. Beachcombing is special fun for those who would like to further enjoy the beauty of many of our destinations.

All of the cooking is done on our wood-fired stove, and is served either family style in the main cabin or as a wonderful buffet on deck. Beverages such as juice, tea, and coffee are provided during meals. Soft drinks may be brought on board and stored in your cabin or in ice chests provided on deck.

7 Things To Know Before Taking A Windjammer Cruise

windjammer cruise greece

  • Types of Travel
  • United States

A windjammer cruise around the coast of Maine is the relaxing vacation of your dreams. Sailing past rocky islands, the azure sky above, the sails billowing in the wind, and lobsters with melted butter: you couldn’t ask for more. Even if you’ve never been to Maine, you might know the state is famous for lobster. 90 percent of the United States lobster supply comes from Maine. Still, you’d be surprised to learn that before the crustacean became an iconic delicacy, lobsters were fed to prison inmates or ground up and used as fertilizer.

I’ve traveled to the Pine Tree State before but never spent time on the water. When offered the opportunity to sail around the tiny coves and into Penobscot Bay for four idyllic days, I jumped at the chance. After all, it’s a place with a long maritime history . Schooners from Maine carried cargo along the Eastern seaboard and as far away as Asia in the 1800s. The Lobster and Lighthouses sail on the J. & E. Riggin , a historic schooner departing from Rockport, Maine, was an experience I couldn’t pass up. If you love historic ships and want to experience the romance of sailing along coastal Maine, here are some things to know before embarking on a Maine Windjammer Cruise .

Note: I was a guest on the J. & E. Riggin for the four-day Lobster and Lighthouse Cruise. All opinions are my own.

1. Windjammers Are Powered By Sails

Also referred to as tall ships, windjammers are commercial sailing ships with multiple masts. They have no engines and are powered by the wind and tides. Today, this provides a relaxing sailing experience with no real destination. When you sail, you go where the wind takes you around Maine’s rocky coast. If there’s no wind (the doldrums ) there’s a yawl boat, a small gas-powered boat rigged or tugged behind the sailboat for assistance. The yawl boat is used for runs to shore and when there’s no wind. When we hit the doldrums, the Riggin used its 16-foot diesel yawl boat to push the schooner along. When there was a strong wind, we sailed around 9 miles per hour, or 8 knots, which was a thrill.

The J&E Riggin Docked In Rockland, Maine

2. Many Windjammers Are National Historic Landmarks

The Riggin was built in 1927 as an oyster dredger in the Delaware Bay. She was built by Charles Riggin in Dorchester, New Jersey and named for his sons Jacob and Edward. The Riggin finished first ahead of all the other oyster-schooners in the only formal race ever held in 1929. She was registered as a National Historic Landmark Vessel in 1991. There’s a plaque on the deck commemorating her status. Most of the windjammers in the Maine Windjammer Association are National Historic Landmarks . With the wind in her sails, the Riggin is as graceful as ever.

Sustainable And ECO-Friendly Sailing Including Mugs For The Duration Of The Sail

3. Windjammers Are Eco-Conscious

Sailing is a sustainable way to travel. The Riggin was given the Environmental Leadership in Hospitality award by the State of Maine —the first and only windjammer to be given the honor. Many sustainable practices are in place for sailing. We were welcomed to select a mug for the trip, ours to wash and use for the journey. We scraped our leftovers for composting after meals. Each passenger washed plates and utensils in dedicated buckets on deck. Paper plates were used during our beach lobster bake, but composting was implemented, stainless utensils were washed, and paper products recycled.

Steering The Riggin windjammer in Maine

4. Guests Help Sail The Schooners

I read that hoisting the sails and sailing the historic schooner is part of the experience on Maine windjammer cruises. Our initiation began on the first day. The first mate gave us a lesson on how to help raise the sails and split guests into two groups. One group helped raise the throat on one side, and one group helped raise the peak on the other. Our crew yelled out, “Heave,” and we called back, “Ho,” and as the sails were raised, the Riggin was underway. Other passengers volunteered to hoist the anchor (a demanding job). Some of the youngest passengers watered the anchor chain or raised the American flag. If you don’t want to assist, that’s up to you, but on a smaller boat, it’s all-hands-on-deck. The Riggin ‘s crew needed help, and guests jumped in to support. Every passenger agreed they enjoyed this aspect of windjamming. I asked Captain Justin if I could take a turn at the wheel and was surprised by the power of the schooner. I enjoyed it, and soon many of the guests steered the Riggin .

Beautiful windjamming vessel.

5. Windjamming Is Elegant Camping

If you like camping, you’ll love windjamming. I liked the prospect of sleeping on a boat, especially under the stars, and brought a sleeping bag to try it. The Riggin is 90 feet long on deck, 120 feet overall, and 23 feet wide with a large galley. There are two bathrooms on deck, and one has a shower. It’s a smaller vessel and usually accommodates 24 passengers, but for our sail, we had 14. The crew kept it spick-and-span, shining the brass and swabbing the deck. It truly is an elegant form of camping as the ship is an antique. The berths are cozy and include a small sink and window. The room allows for rest and storage, and you are meant to spend your time up top admiring the gorgeous scenery. Relaxing pursuits such as reading, sketching, crafting, using binoculars to scope out ospreys or eagles, or watching the waves for porpoises and seals take up the day. We saw a lot of wildlife on our journey, and the sightings never got old. There’s a canvas tarp that allows for shade on the deck. It was up most of the day but removed other times for maximum sailing pleasure.

A Traditional Lobster Dinner With Potato And Corn

6. The Food Is Ultra-Local

When I say local, I mean just-plucked lobster from Stonington, Maine. On our second day, we stopped off in the charming coastal town. Passengers got off the boat to explore while the crew purchased our dinner for later that evening. Then we sailed to Hell’s Half Acre Island and anchored. Captain Justin used the yawl boat to transport us to the campground for a generous spread of lobster, corn, potatoes, paella, and a traditional dessert of s’mores roasted over the fire. For the entire voyage, we were treated to family-style, made-from-scratch meals crafted by Chef Mark Godfrey and Sous Chef Kat Highley. Everything is prepared on the Crawford Cottage wood-burning cookstove in a tiny kitchen. Ingredients are farm-to-table, including Captain Jocelyn’s garden. Maine’s blueberries were a highlight on our trip, as well as bespoke oysters from Adam Campbell’s North Haven Oyster Company . Adam came aboard to teach us how to shuck and slurp the fresh, briny oysters he cultivates in the salt ponds in North Haven, Maine. The food was delicious, plentiful, and there were always extra snacks if needed.

The Riggin Anchored While The Passengers And Crew Enjoyed A Lobster Cookout

7. Windjammers Are Owner Operated And Unique

Even though the boats belong to an association of windjammers, each ship is owner-operated. It’s their independent business, and they take pride in making sure you have the best experience possible. To pick the appropriate boat for your vacation, you should review the description of each windjammer and the layout of the cabins. The overall experience is the same; expect a relaxing cruise in and around the waters of coastal Maine. Each cruise serves a lobster bake either on a beach or in the galley of the boat. Some cruises offer different options for entertainment, crafts, photography, or stargazing. Some are multi-generational or adults only. Read the biography about each captain as well. It’s important to know who you are sailing with and to feel comfortable with their credentials. Captains Justin and Jocelyn of the Riggin are married with many years of experience sailing and crewing on windjammers and private yachts.

Windjammer Pro Tips

Windjammers offer the chance to unplug and leave electronics behind. There’s electricity on the schooners and Wi-Fi in port, but cell service is spotty, especially when sailing. It’s geared for relaxation.

The berths are meant for sleeping. There’s not a lot of space to hang out in your room. So socializing, reading, scoping wildlife, or napping on deck is the daily routine.

Wine, beer, and liquor are not provided, but storage and ice are. Bring your own.

Special diets should be discussed before planning a sail.

People with mobility issues may find it challenging to navigate a sailboat. Steep ladders and tight spaces make it difficult to get up and down to sleeping cabins, or on and off the boat for excursions. Review the specifications for each windjammer.

Windjammers offer a specific type of experience. Check to make sure you have reviewed the activities included. For example, active travelers may want to have options for exercise, while other travelers may want more passive pursuits.

Many cruises sail with families. You might be interested in a cruise with multi-generational opportunities. Check with the boat of your choice to make sure children are permitted.

Sunny days and smooth sailing call for hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Weather changes require layers that you will peel off and reapply throughout the day. Rainy days and fog are also common.
