With phrases like “Wine Country Casual” and “Napa Valley Chic” floating around, it’s easy to feel a little lost in the vineyard.

While the dress codes in Wine Country are more suggestions than rules, we’ve got the lowdown on how to sip in style. Sip, Swirl, and Style: The Best Summer Winery Outfits

Summer winery outfits and summer vineyard outfits you will want to wear on your next wine tour. All in all, summer is the best time to visit a wine cellar! There is no better place to escape from the heat than a cellar. Pov, there are only a few places with better AC in Europe! But finding the ideal outfit for a wine tasting tour in summer can be exciting. Scroll down to see some of my recent inspiring summer winery outfits that are all smart and comfortable. Ps. Wine tasting is not the same as wine drinking. We only take one sip (at least I do) and not an entire glass. The goal is to taste the aroma, not drink alcohol.

Picture this: Sun-drenched vineyards stretching to the horizon, the gentle clink of glasses, and the rich aroma of oak barrels wafting through cool cellars. Summer is the perfect season to visit vineyards and prominent wine cellars, and what better way to enhance your experience than with the perfect summer winery outfit?

Dressing for a wine tasting tour can be challenging. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway to a vineyard in Napa, Champagne or a spontaneous visit to your local winery, putting together the best summer winery outfit is required. Pov, wineries do have a  dress code  – sometimes unwritten but you will never escape the looks if you show up to a winery underdressed or too coquette.

As mentioned earlier, I’m sharing four summer wine tasting tour outfits for you in this article – I’m showing you three summer winery outfits I wore on wine tasting tour in June. My parents and I visit around 10 different wineries every summer. And one from our family’s vineyard.

Of course, my goal is to list all the summer wine tasting tour I ever wore in this article. But I have only started documenting my summer winery looks three years ago, so we only have three plus one looks documented so far. Anyway, more are to come!

FANCY SUMMER  WINE TASTING OUTFIT FOR WINERY TOUR IN FRANCE

There is a certain joy that only a dress can spark. For a wine tasting in France, put on a short sleeve mini tweed dress and espadrilles.

1  BLACK SHORT TWEED DRESS  WITH  ESPADRILLE WEDGES

Step next to AC and imagine how the temperature drops noticeably as you enter the wine cellar. The air is thick with the earthy scent of oak and the faint, sweet aroma of fermenting grapes.

You pass by massive stainless steel tanks. Sadly, their surfaces won’t reflect  your stunning new tweed dress , but rest assured everyone around you will compliment you on your dress as you move deeper into the cellar.

The barrel room opens before you, filled with rows upon rows of oak barrels. Some of them are accessorised with a painting, some not yet.

The sommelier’s voice resonates in the space as they begin the tour, explaining the aging process and the impact of oak on different varietals.

As the tasting begins, you lift the first glass, a crisp Chardonnay. The sommelier instructs you to first observe the color – a pale gold that catches the light beautifully. You swirl gently, watching as the wine’s legs form and fall along the glass.

Bringing the glass to your nose, you inhale deeply. Notes of apple and peach dance with subtle hints of vanilla and pineapple. You might even taste melon and toast from the oak aging. You take a small sip, letting it coat your palate. The wine is alive with flavors – bright fruit up front, followed by a creamy texture and a long, mineral finish.

Moving on to a bold red, you notice how the cellar’s dim lighting accentuates the deep ruby color in your glass. This time,the aroma is more intense – ripe berries, a touch of plum jam, and a whisper of chocolate. The taste is complex, layers of fruit and tannin unfolding as you savor that small sip.

Between tastings, you cleanse your palate with water and unsalted crackers, preparing for the next sensory journey. The sommelier shares stories of each wine’s origin – the specific vineyard, the unique weather conditions of that vintage, the winemaker’s vision.

Rolling hills covered in neat rows of vines stretch as far as the eye can see, their green leaves glowing in the early afternoon light. Cherry trees punctuate the landscape, their slender forms reaching towards the cloudless blue sky.

You find a quiet spot on the balcony with an ineffable view and lift your glass, this time filled with orange wine. The orange liquid catches the sunlight, almost glowing in your hand. As you bring the glass to your lips, the warm breeze carries the scent of sun-baked earth and grapes.

As you type in your upcoming wine tasting tour, ensure a summer dress with long sleeves and espadrilles are on your checklist, too. Espadrilles and a long sleeve summer dress are the quintessential fit for summer attire for the vineyard.

Wine cellars tend to stay cool year-round and you need a layer that won’t weigh you down as you step outside to enjoy the wine.

Espadrilles with a summer dress with long sleeves, or a short tweed dress are the best spring vineyard outfits. Pair with a headband or a wide brim hat for extra. And don’t forget a  water bottle .

Tweed, and cotton. Cotton is a great choice for summer as it’s lightweight and breathable. It can help keep you cool during the day and provide comfort while you’re moving around. On the other hand, tweed’s thermal properties are comparable to wool, making it an excellent choice for cold cellar.

White is perfect for summer and looks elegant. Just be cautious when tasting red wines to avoid stains.

Wear a short sleeve tweed dress or a long sleeve summer dress.

Steer clear of overly casual attire like flip-flops, athletic wear, leggings, sweatpants. Also avoid strong perfumes that might interfere with wine tasting. Check the article for an appriopiate perfume.

What To Wear To A Winery 101

There’s nothing quite like the hills of Tuscany, the Napa valley, or the lakeside of the Okanagan, along with other beautiful places referred to as “wine country” . If you are planning a trip to any of these destinations (or others), you are in for a big treat.

When visiting wineries you might want to tour the vineyards and learn about wine making, enjoy a wine tasting, or a delicious meal on the terrace. Whatever your plans, you’ll definitely want to make sure you are wearing the right winery outfit.

Things To Consider

When you are deciding on winery outfits, you’ll will want to consider a few important factors;

• the season/weather – will it be hot, warm, cool, or rainy?
• the type of winery – is it casual or more upscale?
• the occasion – are you just visiting, or are you attending an event like a winery wedding?

For instance, if you are going to a winery in the summer you’ll want to wear lightweight breathable clothing that is stylish and flattering. If visiting a small boutique winery, you can wear a more casual outfit. On the other hand, if you are going to a high-end, upscale winery you’ll want to dress up for the occasion.

In the fall and winter it might be too cold for a dress, so you can opt for pants, ankle boots, and a nice sweater instead (see wear to a winery in the fall ) !

In the spring and the summer, we recommend going with light, airy clothing options that are minimal, chic, and comfortable. Unless you are going to a casual, small family-owned winery, you’ll find the overall vibe is often more upscale and people will dress slightly more formal. Here are some of our favorite winery outfits for 2024!

strapless top, trousers + sandals

This winery outfit is chic, minimal, and has a refined feel. It’s perfect for wandering through the vineyards (flat shoes are the best choice if you’ll be “off-roading”), and sitting down for a post-wine-tour lunch.

Bring along a basket bag for your essentials, and extra room to pack a couple bottles of wine home with you!

A pretty midi dress is the perfect balance between casual and dressy. Therefore, it can be the perfect wine tasting outfit and be comfortable enough for a tour around the vineyard.

Style a midi dress with a pair of comfortable flat sandals for a casual winery trip. Or, dress it up with heeled sandals and a designer crossbody bag (hands free!) for a top-rated winery visit.

Go for classic black, or opt for a floral midi dress if you prefer a splash of color.

One of our favorite winery outfits is a pretty maxi dress. If you are headed to a luxury winery or a wedding at a winery in the summer, a maxi dress is the perfect go-to. It is light and airy enough for hot weather, but is formal and chic for a fancy occasion.

Go with a nice pair of comfortable heeled sandals (or ankle boots in the fall) and dainty accessories to elevate the look. Remember, less is more. Let the maxi dress be the statement piece and keep everything else to a minimum.

When the weather is really warm and you plan to do everything from a wine tour, to tasting, to lunch, shorts and a blouse or tank top is a great combo. If you choose a pair of nice tailored shorts, such as paperbag shorts or linen shorts, you can dress up the outfit and still be appropriately dressed for an upscale winery.

Throw on a pair of comfortable heeled sandals, flat mules, or flat sandals, and bring along a brimmed woven hat for extra sun protection.

Midi skirt + tank top.

A midi skirt and a minimal tank top can look very classy and elevated for a casual day exploring wineries or a tasting at an upscale estate.

You can opt for a breezy linen skirt with a simple tank top for something lightweight and casual. On the other hand, you can go dressier with a silk midi slip skirt and camisole for a wine tasting followed by dinner.

Visiting a casual family-run winery, or a farm winery calls for a more casual outfit. Don’t be afraid to pair jeans with a cute top, and comfortable slides.

When taking in a wine tasting, you’ll want to dress smart and comfortably. Many wineries have an upscale atmosphere so err on the side of caution and go with more tailored and polished pieces.

This look is elegant and fresh, making it perfect for a winery visit in the spring or summer. The heeled sandals and flowy pants make the outfit dressy enough for lunch or dinner at an estate winery.

But, the pants ensemble is also casual enough for a relaxed wine tour at a boutique winery.  Not to mention, palazzo pants are very versatile and work for all kinds of occasions.

What To Wear To a Winery Wedding

A wedding at a winery is a perfect opportunity to get all dolled up. As a matter of fact, most wineries that host weddings are on the luxury side of the spectrum and have a beautiful estate to explore.

Pair it with some neutral sandal heels and dainty accessories and you’ll be good to go!

What Not To Wear To A Winery

Now that we’ve given you a full range of outfit ideas and what to wear, let’s quickly cover what not to wear to a winery, whether its a small laid-back farm winery or a fancy estate winery.

• Flip flops. Not only are flip flops overly casual, they are also not very sturdy and don’t make the best walking shoe if you are heading on a wine tour.
• Sneakers.  In general sneakers are a bit too casual for a winery. Although some people will still wear them, we suggest leaving them at home and going with a dressier shoe option.
• Pumps with pointy heels. As mentioned earlier, pumps with pointed heels can easily get stuck in the grass or ground when walking around the vineyard. Choose shoes with a block heel or wedge heel instead.
• Athletic wear. This includes leggings, joggers, sweatpants, hoodies, and other items you’d wear to work out or lounge in. They are too casual and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb at the winery wearing this style of clothing.
• Optional: A handheld bag/purse.  When it comes to a bag or purse you’ll want something with a long strap to wear over your shoulder or as a crossbody. In short, you’ll be holding a wine glass for much of the time, going with something hands-free is ideal!

What shoes do you wear to a winery?

When visiting a winery you can wear sandals , mules , loafers , ballet flats , boots , and certain types of heels . But, you’ll want to consider a few things when deciding on the right pair.

• If you are going on a wine tour through the vineyards you will want to make sure you have flat or block-heeled footwear. A void high, pointy heels as they can get stuck in the ground as you walk.
• Wine tours tend to be quite long, and you’ll be standing most of the time, so prioritize comfort!

Additionally, we recommend you avoid sneakers and flip flops as they are both often too casual for a winery setting.

Is it okay to wear jeans to a winery?

It depends! You can easily wear jeans to a casual winery, especially a farm winery that grows crops alongside grapes. Many wineries are very laid-back and do not have a dress code. So it’s not unusual to see the owners wearing overalls or work-wear as they are in and out of the fields.

On the other hand, estate wineries, or those with an upscale or high-end atmosphere, may have a dress code that doesn’t allow jeans. Therefore, it’s best to check if there is a dress code ahead of time to be on the safe side.

If you are really set on wearing jeans to a fancier winery, go for a dark wash or black jeans without any rips , as they have a dressier look than light wash or distressed jeans.

Sarah brings twenty years of winemaking experience and a love for our beautiful region from a long and loyal tenure at De Bortoli Yarra Valley, where she joined as a casual vintage worker in 2003 and progressed through the ranks to her most recent role as Senior Winemaker.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey at De Bortoli and I am proud of the wines we have made over my time of working with their vineyards. TarraWarra Estate has always carved its own independent path here in the Yarra Valley and I look forward to continuing this tradition and embracing change and the development of TarraWarra Estate into the future”, says Sarah.

If you’re planning to purchase wine throughout the day, be sure that your vehicle has a cooler or someplace safe to store your wine without it overheating and getting cooked.

• Don’t Wear Perfume or Fragrances – avoid wearing heavy perfumes, colognes or lotions with strong smells. These can interfere with the aromas of the wine and bother other tasters who are trying to asses the aromas in the wine.
• Don’t Wear Clunky Jewelry – choose simple accessories that won’t get in the way of your wine tasting. Clunky jewelry can clank against glasses or more easily knock glasses off the table.
• Don’t Wear White or Light-Colored Clothing – while white & light colored clothing can look elegant (& keep you cool on a hot day!), they are more susceptible to spills or stains when wine tasting. If it’s going to be hot during your visit, try to opt for darker colors in lighter fabrics – such as linen or cotton.
• Don’t Wear Clothes that Aren’t Comfortable  – wearing clothes that are overly tight or complicated to get in and out of may not be the best fit on a wine tour. You’ll often walk through vineyards, sit and stand for long periods, and since you’re consuming water and wine all day, you’ll likely use the restroom frequently. So you want to make sure your clothes are comfortable and easy to wear for extended periods.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll probably be doing a fair amount of walking, perhaps over uneven stone paving, or through the cobblestone streets of Saint-Émilion, which is a UN World Heritage Site. In some châteaux, you might be walking up and down steep stone steps to and from underground wine cellars, you might walk over uneven terrain through vineyards, and you might be standing for a while when tasting the wines. So sensible shoes are paramount. Forego your flip-flops, they’re fine for the beach, but not the countryside.

What to Wear to a Winery

Wine tasting always makes for a good time! When delicious wine, breathtaking views, fun people and perfect weather surround you, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. That is why I put together this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery. This style guide will not only answer what to wear wine tasting but also go over many style tips, outfit ideas, what to wear during different seasons and it’s full of outfit photos!

To start, let’s review some general winery outfit style tips. These are tips that apply to all of your wine tasting outfits no matter location or season! Keep these ten style tips handy when you’re packing for your wine region adventure.

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to sign up for a wine tour or have a long list of wineries you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes. But comfortable doesn’t have to be sneakers. Instead of sneakers, wear flat sandals, wedges, loafers, or even some nice slides. Also take into consideration which wineries you will be visiting which means you might be walking in grass, dirt, gravel or cobblestone.

2. Go Hands-Free and Small with Your Purse: When you’re wine tasting, you will be walking around a lot, holding and reading brochures, tasting cheeses or chocolates, and of course, holding various wine glasses. So it’s best to wear a fuss-free bag. Also, if you carry a purse without a strap, you run the risk of leaving it behind or setting it down without keeping an eye on it. The best purse to wear to a winery is a small crossbody bag, like the super stylish Mini Marcie from Chloe , the classic Soho Disco bag from Gucci , or mini monogram crossbody from Saint Laurent.

3. Layer a Blazer or Cute Denim Jacket: If your winery outfit is looking a little simple, add a stylish layer. Depending on the season you could wear a denim jacket in the summer, a floral blazer in the spring, a long cardigan in the fall and a coat in the winter. Make sure this layer is not too bulky as you want to move freely no matter the season.

4. Go More Dressy Than Casual: Leave your leggings at home! Even though wineries are basically farms in the country, don’t think you can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and call it a day (unless of course you want to, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you did). Opt for a little more dressy than casual. I still think that wine tasting is a pretty posh activity, so I try always to dress nice and classy. 5. Low Maintenance Hair: Your wine tasting attire includes your hair so wear your hair up or style it in a way that doesn’t need maintenance throughout your wine tasting activities. If you’re planning on being out all day on the wine trail, I would suggest putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun. This way you won’t have to worry about it getting frizzy, going flat, and you won’t have to mess with it during your wine tasting tour. If I have some extra time in the morning, I’ll blowdry it, so it looks nice down.

6. Wear Chapstick: The main activity while wine tasting is drinking wine so instead of lipstick wear chapstick. You don’t want always to be checking your lipstick or re-applying when you get to the car. Keep it simple and wear chapstick.

7. Skip the Strong Perfume: You will be smelling a lot of wine trying to decipher what notes are most prominent, and you don’t want other smells interfering so skip the perfume! Not wearing perfume is also courtesy the group you’re wine tasting with and other guests in the wine tasting room or cave.

8. Wear a Pretty Print: If you need to bring some interest to your wine tasting outfit, swap a solid for a print. Instead of a solid blue dress, wear a dress with horizontal stripes like in my outfit example below. Wear a floral shirt in the spring, stripes in the summer, plaids & tartans in the fall and houndstooth in the winter.

9. Easy is Better: Don’t wear an outfit that is too high maintenance. What you wear to a winery needs to be comfortable and stylish, but remember point four, nothing too casual either.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White: There’s nothing wrong with wearing white to a winery. I have worn white jeans wine tasting, just see my outfit examples below. If you know you spill a lot, then I would suggest skipping the white.

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Different Seasons

When going on a vacation to Napa Valley, there are many choices to make. You need to consider where you’ll stay, which wineries you’ll visit, the time of year you’ll go, and what you’ll pack.

Packing the appropriate wine tasting attire is not necessarily tricky; you need to consider the locations you’ll be visiting and the time of year you’ll be going.

My favorite seasons to visit wine country is spring and fall because it’s not too hot or too cold. You don’t have to worry about sweating or getting sunburned. If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, I would suggest one of these to seasons. But let’s go over what you need to consider for each season and what to wear wine tasting in the spring, fall, summer, and winter.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring

The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.

Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70’s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.

In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you don’t plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. It’s also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and it’s too breezy.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer

Summer in Napa Valley is pretty warm and sunny but this is what draws so many people from around California and beyond because it’s so beautiful! The temperature in the summer ranges from 80s–90s during the day and can cool down to the mid-50s at night.

In the summer opt for light colors, pretty prints, in light fabrics. Instead of jeans, wear skirts, shorts, and dresses.

If you do want to wear pants wear chinos instead of jeans. Chinos are very comfortable because it’s not very thick and not too tight. These two things would make this wine tasting trip very uncomfortable.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Fall

September is my favorite time of the year to go wine tasting because the mornings and evenings are crisp, but not too cold, and the temperatures during the day range from the 80s–90s. It’s the end of summer but not entirely fall. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on a winery patio or deck and take in the gorgeous views.

But fall is also one of the busiest times to visit Napa Valley because it’s harvest time. Harvest in the wine regions means the grapes are getting picked from the vines and many wine enthusiasts travel from all around to enjoy harvest events and special activities. Make sure to plan accordingly.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter

The most significant difference before spring or fall and winter, in addition to the temperature, is the crowds. If you’ve visited Napa Valley in the busy months, you know what I’m referring to regarding the masses. The tasting room at wineries is ten people deep, and you have to make your way to the counter. In the winter Napa has an entirely different feel, it’s peaceful, quiet and you have some places all to yourself.

In terms of weather, it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. Temperatures go down into the high 30’s in the evenings and during the day are in the mid to upper 50’s. I would pack plenty of layers because it can get warm in wineries.

If you’re planning on going wine tasting in the winter here are a few things to consider.

Just like any other time of year, wear comfortable footwear. You’ll be walking and on your feet, a lot so wear flat shoes or shoes with a thick stacked heel. This type of shoe is best for days filled with wine tasting and tours.

Make sure to bring a comfortable and warm sweater. If you decide to wear a thinner sweater, then layer on a coat. But if you don’t want to lug around a large jacket wear a very warm sweater instead. In the outfit example below I wore a thick olive green turtleneck sweater. I love the oversized collar and distinct fabric patterns; it brings texture and dimensions to an otherwise simple outfit.

With the large sweater and high black boots, I wore light colored skinny jeans. Remember; the balance is critical. The boots are thick and heavy so to balance the boots I wore jeans on the lighter side instead of charcoal or black. I also wanted the shoes to stand out, and if I had worn black jeans, you wouldn’t have even noticed the boots.

It’s best to wear thinner skinny jeans with high boots such as the ones I’m wearing because you want the boots to fit snugly around your calves. The last thing you want is your jeans bunching up around your ankles.

You might have noticed a theme in the notes I mentioned. Comfort is key. You can be stylish and comfortable; you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other.

There are a variety of stylish wine tasting outfits you can wear to wine destinations such as Napa. The variation exists because of activities, weather, and destination. The two critical details that you need to make sure these outfits are stylish and comfortable.

If you’ve been wine tasting, you know that there is a lot of standing, walking, and more standing involved. You need to wear an outfit that is comfortable with these various activities.

When putting together an outfit find a middle ground. An outfit that is not too dressy but not too casual either. You’ll need to wear a wine tasting outfit that you can wear all day and smoothly transition into evening dinner if you don’t plan on going back to your hotel to change.

Neutral Wine Tasting Outfit

The first wine tasting outfit is a blend of neutrals and one gorgeous printed top. The halter top is the main piece in this look, and the olive green cargos and wedges are the shirts supporting items. The cargo pants downplay the fancy, and the wedges keep the pants looking classy. With the natural color palette, this outfit is in its perfect setting.

The blouse has a pretty nature pattern which added the right amount of interest without it being an overpowering single piece. This outfit has a delicate balance of stylish but casual which I was able to achieve with the color and fabric choices.

A neutral outfit to wear wine tasting goes perfectly with this wine country activity since it’s such a relaxing atmosphere and the landscape of most wineries are earth-toned. This outfit will also work with flats or sandals if wedges are not your favorite thing to wear wine tasting.

If you’re wondering what to wear wine tasting remember: month, location and landscape. Put together a stylish and comfortable look and bring an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Shop nEUTRAL COLOR LOOK

Stylish wine tasting outfit.

For a stylish approach consider a striped shirtdress. In this outfit, I went with a look that was more “dressy” but still had the feel of a casual weekend look. The relaxed fit of the dress and the strips make this dress wine tasting appropriate. I know wearing heels while wine tasting is taboo, but I couldn’t help but wear those gorgeous laser cut heels. The two paired perfectly together.

I know what some of you might be thinking, “you’ll spill red wine on the white,” but take it from someone that spills a lot, you can wear white wine tasting as I mentioned in the ten style tips at the start of this post.

This shirtdress is both stylish and comfortable. All you need is a few accessories and a cute pair of shoes.

Monochrome Wine Tasting Outfit

When a lot of walking is involved consider a cute pair of sandals. Remember I said cute pair of sandals, not flip flops. Keep it stylish even though you’re toning it down. With these casual wine tasting outfits make sure you have a focus point and something that still keeps the outfit classy.

In this third outfit, the sandals were the contrasting pop of color to the blue monochrome outfit . When wearing pants and a blouse of very similar color make sure the pieces are made from different fabrics. This top is a different material and hue of blue from the pants. The shiny silk looks excellent against the muted blue chinos. The blue structured patent handbag gives this casual wine tasting outfit structure, and again it’s a different material and color from the other two blues in this outfit.

Remember when you want to wear the same colors in one outfit, select different materials with a slight change in color, that can also mean shiny. In this outfit, the pants are muted, the silk top has a sheen to it, and the handbag is shiny.

Cute Wine Tasting Attire

The last outfit is something that would work for wine tasting locations where walking on dirt would be minimal. Overall it’s a cute and casual look, and the patterned pants added some individuality, and the heels dressed it up a bit.

Since the pants are very busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit neutral. I paired these patterned pants with a blouse that matches one of the colors from the pattern.

With this chiffon blouse and a basic tee in the same color, I layered the light chiffon blouse over the shirt and created an airy, pretty layered look. The pop of color in this look was the handbag and the orange heels. These colors work well together because they’re all in the warm color family. The browns and oranges with a splash of red are appealing to the eye and come together nicely.

Planning Your Trip to Napa Valley

Wine tasting in Napa is a unique experience in my list of favorite places to visit. Napa brings together so many beautiful things that I love, from good food and wine to gorgeous landscapes and a relaxing environment to disconnect from the day-to-day.

With more than 400 wineries (600+ if you count Sonoma) you are sure to find a wine that you’ll love while wine tasting in Napa. If you are limited in time, at most you’d be able to visit 15 wineries during a weekend, well maybe you could do more, but I wouldn’t advise it because you’ll get too tired or too drunk.

My advice is to do some research ahead of time and make a list of the wineries you want to visit. There are popular locations like Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Castello di Amorosa. But there are smaller gems where you can maybe find the best Merlot you’ve ever had. The style of trip you wish to experience should help determine the tasting rooms you visit. If you want an intimate visit where you get to talk to the winemakers and learn insights into what makes their wine special than I would look for smaller tasting rooms.

If you’re looking to see castles, take a ride at Sterlings ariel tram and see where the most famous wines from Napa come from then I would organize a route for the larger vineyards.

Peter and I have visited the famous wineries and the smaller ones during our wine tasting trips in Napa. This September we made an effort to visit smaller vineyards with cozier atmospheres, but we deviate by visiting Beringer Vineyards to have a tasting of there reserve wine and of course a cheese plate.

We tend to plan, but if you’re wine tasting without any specific plan that works too. You can start driving and stop at the first place that looks appealing.

Napa Wine Tasting Clothing Tips

#1: dress in layers.

That’s the first thing we tell guests when they ask us what to wear wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma. Weather in the San Francisco Bay Area can change within minutes, and there can be quite a contrast between mornings in The City and afternoons in Wine Country.  

As Mark Twain has been quoted as saying, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

The San Francisco fog is infamous. Sometimes, it’s almost like a miracle when you head north from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and find sunshine and warmth on  tours to Napa and Sonoma .

So start the day with a jacket or sweater even in the middle of summer. You can leave that layer in our secure  vehicle  as temperatures rise and wine warms the body. We promise your guide will keep your belongings safe while you’re enjoying a day in Wine Country.

#2: Dress Comfortably

Our second suggestion is to dress comfortably. Napa and Sonoma definitely exemplify California’s laid-back lifestyle, especially when it comes to attire. Basically, there’s no dress code. However, we urge you to wear comfortable shoes since some walking is necessary especially during lunch and free time.

#3: Wear Something Fun

Recommendation No. 3 is to wear something fun. Wine Country is fun so you’ll want to look good in the pictures you take during the best day of your vacation.

#4: Remember to Smile

Dress up or down. Wine Country welcomes everyone no matter the attire. Just remember to wear a smile for all the amazing photos you’re going to take.

#5: Shorts, Jeans and T-Shirts are Ok

Shorts are definitely okay for men and women. Jeans and T-shirts are also cool. What you wear wine tasting really is up to you!

#6: Wear Sunglasses

We strongly suggest wearing sunglasses. There’s a good chance one or two tastings will be held outdoors weather permitting. You’ll also have free time for lunch and to walk around a Wine Country town, so sunglasses will come in handy.

#7: Wear Comfortable Shoes

Please wear comfortable shoes. We’d hate for you to miss out on an extra pour in a vineyard while the wine server is telling the group about what makes their wine the best.

#8: Hats Come in Handy

Hats are certainly optional, but may come in handy during vineyard strolls or free time or lunch. Bonus points for couples with matching hats.

Attending a Wine Tasting? Here's What to Wear

For wine lovers, there’s always a good reason to go for a tasting, whether it’s for a special occasion like a date night or you’ve planned a day-long tour with friends. (Is it rosé season yet?) But with your visit planned, your last task is to figure out what to wear wine tasting, a question that's maybe best answered by an expert. 

We enlisted Magdalena Wojcik, owner of  The Blending Lab in Los Angeles, to provide her expertise for the appropriate attire, whether you’re headed to a sun-filled day in the wine country or an evening at a tasting room, such as hers.

"When in wine country, I think of comfort and weather. I like to usually wear a dress . For shoes, comfort is essential. In spring and summer, I stick with sneakers—you never know where you’ll end up! Even in the winter, the sun is strong, so I never leave without a hat.” Wojcik also tells us that sunscreen is her top accessory at the winery. 

If you’re opting for a tasting room in the city, there’s nothing like a cool military or moto jacket, according to Wojcik. "Urban wine tasting is a little bit different in my opinion, so I dress for the occasion.” A pair of jeans styled with a  plain white tee allows you to be comfortable as you run around town but prepared for when the weather begins to cool down. "Tasting rooms are usually cold because of the wine, and a jacket ensures that you’re not cold when enjoying your wine tasting.” She also recommends comfortable  flat shoes as you might not have a seat in the room.

I prefer closed-toe shoes as they protect your toe fingers and still look good. This footwear ensures style and comfort with each step.

These cute ballerina pumps redefine class and elegance with comfortable wear. The best thing? They pair perfectly with all types of dresses!

I know how much women love yoga pants because I’m the one, too. And I am sorry to burst your bubble, but this is also something that’s not appropriate to wear to a wine festival or any other winery event. But don’t worry, here are two other pant options that you can wear instead:

I personally adore chino trousers as they’re not too tight or thick – ideal for summer. The loose fit and permanent cuff at the ends maximize comfort for wine tasting.

When I think about wine tasting outfits, florals automatically come to mind. There’s some special charm in a floral print, don’t you think? And the first season that comes to mind is spring. 

So, here’s how to rock a springtime attire in a winery:

Inspire yourself with a romance of winery gardens in this floral dress that looks so cute! If you want to elevate this look, just add some dangling earrings and a black clutch. 

And since it might be muddy in the vineyard, I suggest you wear closed-toe shoes which you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.

4 Outfits for Guys to Wear to a Winery

Enough about ladies; I bet my male readers are dying to see some cute outfits for themselves to flaunt at a winery. 

Ahead, I’ve shared four outfits, and to keep it fair, you will find out how to dress up for different seasons as well. Here we go, guys!

This Hawaiian-style shirt looks great with blue shorts and classy loafers. I would definitely recommend this outfit for hot summer days when you want to look your best and not get too hot. It’s simple and so cool at the same time!

Moving into the fall season, it’s important to consider both a warm September afternoon and a chilly morning. Here’s how you can ace your look in both temperatures:

Put on a polo shirt, jeans, and comfortable sneakers, and don’t forget to bring a cardigan if it gets cold.

Don’t be fooled by the hot afternoon hours because you can already feel the chilly air during the evening. For this reason, some layering pieces are a must-have on autumn days.

When it gets cold enough that a coat becomes necessary, you can put on something like this for winter outfits for vineyards:

Wine tasting is more than just actually tasting the wine. Visiting a winery is the whole experience! Enjoy the crisp outdoor air, your favorite type of grape or fruit wine, rolling hills, and a fun afternoon with your favorite people.

Whether you’re going out with a date, a friend, or colleagues, a wine and tasting tour is something you won’t regret. It’s one of our favorite activities year-round!

But if you’re planning your wine tasting outfits for an upcoming winery tour, you might realize there just isn’t much information out there. What does one wear to a winery?

Today, we’re here to help you figure out what to wear to a winery and plan your wine tasting outfits for any future event! Read on to learn how to style your outfit, know the basic no-nos when tasting wine, and discover chic wine-tasting ensembles for every season.

How To Style A Wine Tasting Outfit

Chic but comfortable shoes 

Wearing comfortable shoes on a wine trip is probably one of the most underrated styling tips I know. Some people turn up in the prettiest shoes but the most ridiculous pairs to walk on the grass.

You should only consider wearing heels when the tasting is expected to occur inside or on concrete. Trust me – you want to be sure before choosing heels!

But if your destination is within the vineyards or outdoors in general, consider that you might be walking on dirt, gravel, grass, or cobblestone. I recommend wearing flats, sandals, loafers, or slides for a chic but comfortable look. You can sometimes get away with wedges if you’re an expert on heels.

If it has rained before your trip, expect lots of mud. Bring a pair of ankle boots or sneakers you don’t mind getting dirt on for an emergency.

Small, fuss-free purse

During a wine tasting tour, you will be strolling around and active, which means you don’t want to bring something bulky. A bulky bag is not only inconvenient but doesn’t really go with the free-flowing wine-tasting outfits look. The ideal bag you can bring is a medium purse with a sling strap that you can carry your essentials along while holding a glass of wine.

Here are some of my favorite purses for classic winery outfits.

A cute sweater or jacket

A cover-up layer is unnecessary if the weather is super hot, but something like a wool shawl can keep you cozy from the breeze while strolling around the vineyards in the colder seasons. I recommend a lightweight sweater, jean jacket, or cute shawl that goes with your look.

A light or vibrant outfit with prints & color

When figuring out what to wear to a winery, you don’t have to stay with basic and neutral colors. Most wine tasting outfits incorporate some sort of prints – check out the example photos below to see what I mean. They also incorporate a lot of pastel or French-inspired colors.  My favorite prints in winery outfits are gingham, stripes, plaids, and floral. 

Undyed linen clothing *at your own risk*

If you’re not into prints and bold colors, there’s really no harm in opting for neutral and earthy colors such as undyed clothing. Undyed clothing, like linen, is airy, fresh, and stylish. Plus, it looks good in pictures – very organic and natural. 

But watch out for your outfit if you have a tendency to spill drinks  or if you’ll be sitting in the grass! A winery is an  easy  place to stain your clothes.

Tips For Choosing Wine Tasting Outfits

Aside from styling your outfit, there are some things that you need to know for a seamless wine tasting experience.

1. Put your hair up 

When you’re on a vineyard tour or participating in an outdoor wine tasting, you should consider putting your hair up or bringing a clip. You will have more freedom to move around and concentrate on the wine, cheese, and food. Additionally, this keeps your hair away from the wine.

Knowing all of this is helpful so that you can prepare your hair for a bun or tied-up look before you arrive at the venue. The ponytail or messy bun look is super trendy, especially at wineries!

2. Avoid wearing lipstick

When you’re wondering what to wear to a winery, the first step should be to check out the  actual winery online. Look on Instagram or Facebook to get an accurate vibe of how casual vs. fancy the winery is. I’ve been to wineries that range from  super casual (literally a farm stand vibe) to incredibly fancy with a sit-down tasting.

What To Wear To A Winery: Outfit Combinations

Here are some of our favorite winery outfits and combinations to help you figure out what to wear.

Flowy Dresses

One of my favorite things on a vineyard tour is to imagine myself in fairytale land and recreate the look in pictures. I make this possible by wearing a flowy maxi dress.

If the wind cooperates, you’ll love a patterned maxi dress. But really, any flowy dress makes it easy to move around and still feel like you’re on a French villa.

You can opt for loafers, sneakers, or flats for your footwear. Bring a cover-up such as a shawl or a cardigan if the weather is chilly.

The flowy dress (of any length) is the classic look for most winery outfits. I recommend starting here if you’re unsure what to wear to a winery!

Blouse & Jeans

Jeans are easy to move in and they look casually smart with a nice blouse. My ‘nice blouse’ capsule consists of off-shoulder tops, ruffled tops, and collared button-downs.

This ensemble gives you a chic but laid-back and relaxed style with which you would want to walk around the vineyard and taste the wine. If the weather permits, you can go for open-toed sandals. A pair of loafers will do otherwise.

A Romper or Jumpsuit

Rompers are easy to put on and move around in. I see a romper like a dress that’s not too dressy. They look smart, casual, and classy — perfect for a day for wine tasting.

When it’s cold out, I usually wear a denim jacket or leather jacket over my romper. This completes the outfit as well. For your footwear, you can go for dainty open-toed sandals.

A romper is a great option when you’re wondering what to wear to a winery and have no idea how fancy or casual the venue is.

A midi skirt gives the same magical feel that a flowy dress can provide. Plus, anything with one can make it feel like you’re on a real vacation far away from home. While flowy dresses emulate a fairy-like vibe, midi skirts make you feel like you’re in Paris — tasting the origins of the wine. It’s a classy and elegant piece to play with as well! 

While I’m a huge fan of incorporating the midi dress into my wine tasting outfits, I  also love the midi  skirt because I can style it more casual if I’m not sure what the winery looks like.

What To Wear To A Winery For Every Season 

When picking an appropriate wine tasting outfit, it’s not entirely about picking the right style. It is also about considering the location, the weather conditions, and the season you’re going. Consider where you’re staying, when you’re staying, and the weather which you will be living with during your time of visit. 

What To Wear To A Winery In the Spring

Next to autumn, spring is the best time to visit wine vineyards and experience wine tasting tours with friends. It may not be harvest season just yet, but it’s the best time to plan picnics, hiking ventures, locals night, and outdoor drinking/tasting. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to style outfits based on the activities that the weather and the season permit. 

It’s important to know that it can still be a little chilly outside at most wineries in the spring. A jacket, a wool shawl/scarf, or a sweater on hand is still a good idea. To keep your hands free, you can tie your sweater or jacket across your shoulder and your hips to act as a nice accent to your outfit.

For your shoes, loafers are ideal but if you can afford a bit of risk or if you won’t be strolling a lot, you can go for open-toed sandals. 

For your color palette, opt for vibrant, colorful, and floral colors to match the aura of the season . Floral prints, bold patterns, and pastel colors are also one of the best go-to’s for spring .

I f you’re going for a picnic date, a nice floral picnic dress and a woven basket for lunch and snacks is a great accessories to spice up your photos. Hiking dates are also a different matter. Depending on the terrain, you will be needing good quality and dressy hiking shoes to avoid slipping. Typically, winery hikes are not as strenuous as peak/mountain hikes, so a pair of jeans can most likely work. Of course, a lightweight windbreaker or an emergency sweater can always come in handy. 

Springtime is literally the perfect time to plan winery outfits: just about all wine tasting outfits have springtime patterns!

What To Wear to A Winery In Summer

As with all summers, summer in a wine-bearing town or city is beautiful, warm, and sunny. The temperature ranges from 80° to 90° and cools to 50° when the sun goes down.

Adjusting your clothing and adding a couple of practical (but stylish) accessories like a sun hat can do you good. While you don’t have to worry about rain as much as spring, you need to worry about the sun. Grapes love hot days!

You would want to wear something elegant and casual for group wine tours. A linen blouse or top and dressy shorts will work great. If you’re looking for a modest alternative, you can wear a maxi skirt or lightweight culottes .

If you’re going on a more intimate wine date with an S.O., you can wear something more feminine, like a midi skirt and a tank top or a flowy dress.

The last thing you’d want to wear in the summer is jeans since they can feel sticky and heavy when worn in humid weather. When choosing a summer outfit, think airy, fresh, and sunny. Since you have more freedom in the summer, footwear can either be open-toed or close-toed. For summer hikes, you can opt for walking sandals if that’s more comfortable.

You can apply the concept similar to spring outfits for the color palette. Floral, vibrant, and sunny. Personally, when I think of summer, the colors I imagine are yellows and greens. Perhaps a sunflower dress or a yellow gingham skirt – how cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Fall 

In most wine regions in the country, particularly Northern California, harvest season occurs during the fall. Like spring, fall is not exactly cold or hot – perfect for strolling and enjoying the outdoor breeze. Fall is also the best time to arrange picking activities if you visit a winery with a vineyard and want to get active. 

If you ask me, the best time to visit a winery is during early fall, when the weather is crisp and breezy but slightly warm. And it’s my favorite time to plan winery outfits! Nonetheless, late fall is great with the layers.

For me, it’s the perfect time to dress up in gorgeous sweater dresses, burnt orange knits, and knee-high boots . We’re also about incorporating more seasonal colors like red, orange, brown, olive green, and mustard .

It depends on the month you’re going, but some cozy layers like a jacket, a knit jacket, or a wool shawl are ideal.

You should also consider the chance of rain during this time (which is highly likely). Bringing a mini umbrella or a pocketable waterproof poncho will be helpful, especially if it takes a bit of a walk from the parking area to the main vicinity. If you’re going on a tour, a pocketable windbreaker or rain jacket will be handy when the necessity arrives. To make sure, always check the weather for the day so you can prepare ahead. 

Although fall is not as sunny and warm as summer, it is a great time to sit by the winery patio, taste some wines, hear the rustling of the leaves and watch a breezy sunset with a friend or an S.O. Fall makes the best, photographic views that the mind can never forget. Plus, winery outfits in the fall are just too cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Winter

Surprisingly, winery and vineyard visits during winter are possible! In fact, vineyards are very much alive even during this time of year. 

Wineries and vineyards during winter are not like in other months. Unlike the boisterous crowd wineries usually have during summer and fall, winter visits are calmer and more peaceful. Although the weather might not be the most ideal, since it will be cold, there is nothing compared to a relaxing and memorable wine date with your loved ones. But your winery outfits should  definitely be warm enough.

On days like these, you want to wear something snug, comfortable, and stylish . Instead of puffer jackets and sports sweaters, you can go for something tailored like a long coat or a leather jacket over a knit sweater dress for your winery outfits.

I also like to wear turtle necks and midiskirts with thermal tights underneath. This gives me the opportunity to wear something flowy during this time of year. If you’re not feeling like wearing a dress, you can go for a thermal turtleneck top, a thick wool cardigan, and fitted jeans. If you’re staying in for the night, it’s better to overestimate the cold temperature than to find yourself in need of more layers in a cumbersome time.

Tip: When the weather demands layers, take the opportunity to combine varieties of texture, color, and fabric type for your wine tasting outfits.

For your footwear, opt for something with enough coverage to keep your feet from the cold. Also, skip the heels unless you’re staying inside the winery. The cobblestone walkways and muddy floors can be troublesome with the wrong footwear. 

Wineries during winter are a magical and special time of year. Because of the minimal crowd, couples flock to wineries in these months.

If you’re headed to a winery, what should you wear? The answer might seem obvious – after all, it’s not like you’re going to a black tie event. But there are still some things to keep in mind when choosing what to wear to a winery. In this article, we’ll give you outfit ideas, no matter what the season or which wine region you visit.

Our editors have been to vineyards and wineries all over the world. No matter the region or destination, what people wear to wineries doesn’t really change much. It’s only the season and the weather that are most important to consider.

If you have booked a wine tour or tasting, be sure to read the basics of what to expect at your winery visit, plus all the outfit suggestions below!

The Basics: What to Expect at a Winery and How to Dress

When it comes to picking an outfit for visiting a winery, there are some basic considerations you should make, regardless of the season.

• There is no official dress code at wineries. That being said, you still want to be practical and respectful. Keep your outfit classy and casual. No flip flops, and save the workout clothes for the gym.
• Rural location: Wineries are often in rural locations. That means gravel and dirt roads and pathways. Keep your dress whites at home, unless you know you’re visiting a highly manicured property.
• Vineyard Tour : If you’re doing a tour of the vineyard, you will walk through the vineyard, which is essentially a farm. Depending on the weather, this could include mud, dirt, plants, etc. Wearing white shoes is not advisable, and leave the stilettos at home.
• No scents: Wine tasting requires you to smell the wine, and bringing scents into a winery is a big no-no. This includes strong perfume (ideally none at all), essential oils, strongly scented lotion, scented hand sanitizer, baby wipes, etc. If you can smell it, it will negatively affect the wine tasting experience for everyone in the room.
• Winery Tours: Wineries can be messy operational facilities, especially during harvest. Grapes are being transported and crushes, juice is moved around, floor are hosed down and often wet. Wine cellars are fairly chilly as well. Even if you didn’t book a tour, prepare to tour one just in case and wear comfortable shoes that you aren’t going to be too precious about.
• Wine Tasting Only: If you’re only going to be tasting wine inside a tasting room (at the winery or in a city tasting room), you can wear the same type of clothing you would wear to lunch at a restaurant. If you’re going to wine country, wine tastings are often done outside when the weather is nice.
• Don’t forget sun protection: You might be outside for a bit, tasting, touring or both. Make sure to take sunscreen to protect yourself. Once you start tasting, you might forget! Alternatively, bring a sun hat.

Below are some specific suggestions for casual winery outfits by season. Wine tasting outfits are ultimately up to you and your style, but these are meant to give you some inspiration. Most wineries and wine tasting rooms are casual, so unless the winery has specifically sent dress code information, casual is a safe assumption.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer (Hot Weather)

There are lots of options when it comes to how to dress at a winery in the summer. First, check the weather for your wine country destination. Some wine regions may even require you to wear layers in the summer. Even if it doesn’t cool off outside at all, you might find yourself in a cold wine cellar for 20 minutes on a tour.

For example, a perfect wine tasting outfit for summer in Napa Valley or California wine country is probably a floral midi dress with comfortable sandals and a denim jacket for night when it cools off.

Outfits like flowy dresses, a crisp white t-shirt with a cute skirt or lightweight printed pants are perfect for summer in wine country.

You can wear sandals, just pick some that feel sturdy on uneven ground. You don’t want to be carried out of the vineyard after twisting an ankle!

For men, a collared shirt is always a good choice. In the summer, you can wear a short-sleeved button down or polo. Linen is a great summer fabric. A polo shirt or a long sleeve linen top (sleeves rolled) with chino pants or jeans are both good options for men to wear to a winery.

A button up top and jeans is a classic look for anyone. In summer, the shirt could be a crisp white poplin or linen shirt is most classic. The key is to look relaxed and casual though, not like you’re going to a stuffy office.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting in the Fall or Spring

If you are wearing jeans, consider pairing with a denim shirt in a similar color. This is a simple outfit but you will always look put together in it. If rain is in the forecast, layer a trench over it.

Ankle boots are fall staples and a flannel shacket is a good layer for fall. Temperatures can swing in the fall, so layers are key. A nice pair of work boots are a go-to shoe in fall for anyone.

Maxi dresses and light sweaters, and complimentary colors to the changing colors on the vines are great for photos in fall!

What to Wear to Wine Country in the Winter (Cold Weather)

In the winter, temps can vary based on location. As always, check the weather that week.

Not all wine regions are uncomfortably cold in winter. For instance, Sonoma County and most of California wine country is quite mild. A leather jacket over a maxi dress and a cute pair of ankle boots is a nice way to dress up for a winery in winter. Some days, you might not even need the jacket!

In contrast, if you’re headed to a wine region that gets snow, you’ll need to plan accordingly.

Some other popular outfit choices for women in winter are:

• Warm sweater with jeans and ankle boots
• Sweater dresses with tall or riding boots make a simple outfit.

Just remember, winter can also be more rainy in some destinations, so the ground might be muddy in areas. It’s not the time to wear your fresh white sneaks.

It’s also smart to bring a wool beanie for cold winter days. Black crewneck sweater, a nice pair of brown work boots, dark jeans, hat (ball cap or beanie). Classic look.

Wearing a Purse in Wine Country

Beware you might end up sitting at a rustic picnic table outside with a red wine glass sitting on a not-so-flat surface. Get the picture? So, there is a level of risk wearing white. However, white looks sharp in summer and you only live once! If you’ll be worried the whole time, it’s safer to wear something else.

While it’s totally fine to stay simple with a round-neck tee and jeans shorts.

I’d love to try out some looks that can be manageable yet aesthetic like putting on a cute headband and a romantic low braid to rock the headscarf scarf.

As for the high bun and high ponytail, make sure you tie them with rubber bands.

10. COMFORT FOOTWEAR FOR SUMMER WINERY TOUR

Last but not least, the footwear.

Basically, anything comfortable can work.

Think sneakers, slide sandals, and of course, my favorite lace-up espadrilles wedges that will add a touch of darling to any ensemble.

I know many girls still insist on wearing high heels for fancy vineyard shots. I have no problem with that but just a reminder: At least go for the chunky heels so you can actually walk steadily on the soil.

Or else, get yourself these little heel protectors so you won’t trip over in your stilettos.

Trust me, that’s not a good look.
