4 Key Facts About Padel Tournaments

world padel tour prize money 2023

Padel is a racket sport that blends badminton, squash, and tennis features. Since its creation in Mexico in the late 1960s, it has become increasingly well-known worldwide, especially in Latin America and Europe. In Padel, there are four Major tournaments, similar to the Grand Slam in tennis, which are the highest-profile events on the sport’s newly established tour.

Global tournaments are held on a professional padel circuit. With elite players worldwide competing in multiple tournaments throughout the season, the World Padel Tour (WPT) is the most well-known circuit. Read on to discover more about padel tournaments through these four significant facts:

  • The Premier Padel Tour, World Padel Tour, and A1 Padel Tour are the three main professional padel tours, with 55 significant tournaments staged in 24 countries in 2023.
  • With eight tournaments spread over seven countries, the Premier Padel Tour offers €3.3 million in prize money. Due to a contentious exclusivity agreement between the Padel Players Association and the World Padel Tour, the Premier Padel Tour is exclusively open to men.
  • In 2023, 28 events comprised the 2023 World Padel Tour, which provided €2.95 million in prize money.
  • From February 13 to December 10, 2023, 19 tournaments in 14 nations make up the 2023 A1 Padel Tour. The prize money for the A1 Padel Tour is around €2 million.

The advent of a specialized world championship featuring tournaments from some of the world’s top players from nations like Italy, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Portugal has cemented Padel’s global position.Padel is poised to become a significant force in sports because of its inclusion in several multi-sport competitions, including the World Padel Tour and the Pan American Games.

World Padel Tour lets players compete in Premier Padel as part of overhaul

Damm-owned tour announces new business model to compete with qsi-backed circuit..

  • WPT to drop lawsuits against players who sign up to deal
  • Increased prize money part of proposal
  • Pact would reportedly kick in from 2023 and run for five years

The World Padel Tour (WPT) has unveiled plans for a new event and business model as it continues to jostle for market space with the Qatar-backed Premier Padel.

As well as increased prize money, the WPT is set to remove exclusivity clauses in its contracts, meaning players would be free to compete in both rival tours.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca , prize money for the World Master Final will be €500,000 (US$489,000) for male and female players. Parity will end there, though, with ‘BIG’ events offering €600,000 (US$587 million) for the men and €300,000 (US$294,000) for the women.

Additionally, Men’s Open 300 events are set to have prize money of €300,000, women’s Open 150s will offer €150,000 (US$147 million), while men’s Open 100 and women’s Open 60 competitions will feature prize funds of €100,000 (US$ 97,900) and €60,000 (US$58,700), respectively.

In May, the WPT took legal action against the International Padel Federation (FIP), the Professional Players Association (PPA) and Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) over Premier Padel, which launched earlier this year.

The lawsuit accused the defendants of encouraging WPT players to breach contract, and subsequently benefiting from such breaches, as well as denigrating the Damm-owned circuit.

However, the WPT learned in July that it would no longer be able to bring a joint arbitration lawsuit against its players who had competed in Premier Padel.

Now, the WPT has said its current lawsuit against the players will be immediately withdrawn if they sign up to the new deal.

Stay up to date with the latest sports business news and insights.

The plans, which would kick from the 2023 season, will reportedly be presented to players in the coming days and last for five years.

Sportspro says….

The WPT and Premier Padel have been engaged in a bitter struggle ever since the latter formed last February following QSI’s major investment in the FIP.

In short, the WPT is not regulated by the FIP and has been accused of tying players to its tour, as well as offering low pay and no involvement in decision-making processes. The FIP and PPA subsequently submitted a complaint to the European Commission accusing the WPT and Damm of breaking European Union (EU) competition law. Premier Padel also claimed the WPT had threatened players with hefty fines if they competed in the new circuit.

A number of factors likely prompted the WPT’s new proposal, including its legal setback, pressure from players, and the financial might of QSI, which is led by BeIN Media and Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Whatever the reason, the hostilities between the WPT and Premier Padel don’t seem to be ending.

A source close to Premier Padel told SportsPro that the latest development is “all about Estrella Damm and WPT’s self-interest and PR games”, adding that its promise to withdraw legal action against players is the equivalent of “legal blackmail”. The WPT’s increased prize money, the source continued, also remains less than Premier Padel’s offering.

The success of the plans will depend on athlete backing. Given the majority of top men’s players reportedly boycotted an initial meeting, there looks to be several hurdles ahead for the WPT.

What prize-money at padel in 2022? APT vs. Premier Padel vs. WPT

world padel tour prize money 2023

You wonder what are the differences in prize money between the three professional circuits of padel currently in effect? We take stock.

Premier Padel : the revolution in prize-money!

Premier Padel is arrived this year, with record prices . We obviously think first of all of the Majors, which will be four in number this season (Qatar, Italy, France and Mexico) and which offer €525 in prize money! For players, this gives rewards that change everything as you can see below:

  • Last qualifying round 820 € per player
  • First Round Main Draw: 1 500 € per player
  • Sixteenths: 2 900 € per player
  • Eighths: 5 250 € per player
  • Quarters: 8 500 € per player
  • Semi final : 13 100 € per player
  • Final: 23 600 € per player
  • Champions: 47 300 € per player

But the other tournaments of the official circuit of the FIP are not left out since even the Type II currently offer more money than any other professional tournament which is not stamped Premier Padel. Judge instead:

  • The  Major  offer a prize money of  525 000 €  by tournament
  • The  Type II offer a prize money of  250 000€  by tournament
  • The  TypeIII offer a prize money of  125 000 €  by tournament
  • And finally, the End of season Masters  offers a prize money of  280 000 €

Only downside so far, Premier Padel does not yet offer a tour for ladies.

The APT and the WPT now at the same level…for men!

Before the arrival of Premier Padel, the APT Padel Tour, who had identified the World Padel Tour as its first competitor, had decided to somehow match the prize-money offered by the circuit managed by Setpoint Events SA Here is how the rewards are distributed at the APT:

2022 APT prize money increase Padel Tour

But shortly after the start of the season, the World Padel Tour made a historic decision: offer the same rewards to ladies and men . Thus, if the WPT remains overtaken by Premier Padel and is neck and neck with the APT concerning prize-money for men, he remains the reference in the padel feminine !

Germany, France, and the UK display high growth potential with large populations and limited padel court availability. While in mature markets like Spain, Sweden, and Finland, there are more padel courts than tennis courts.

Argentina has the fourth largest number of padel courts in the world with roughly 4,900 courts (Argentine Association of Padel [APA]).

In Europe, many expect Italy, Sweden, and Belgium to wind up as the most important countries for padel aside from Spain.

Padel Court Growth in Europe

With over 40,000 known padel courts globally in 2022, over 31,401 are located in Europe. The number of padel courts in Europe is expected to grow by 26% annually to 66,908 padel courts in 2025 (Padel Lands, All For Padel, Local federations). Countries with data: Spain, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Portugal, Germany, UK, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway.

The Cost to Play: Padel Court Price

world padel tour prize money 2023

Padel prices vary significantly with the cost of living, the cost of real estate, and court availability vary by city. With just a couple of courts, New York-based Padel Haus is the most expensive court our survey found with the on-peak rate for non-members at  $55/player/hour . Several courts are planned and in construction in the city, but it will probably take a lot of clubs to satiate New York’s demand for padel.

The Gulf States are increasingly a padel hub, and Dubai also has high prices with high variability - many courts go for over  €100/hour  during on-peak times.

Across northern Europe, the prices settle around  €40-50/hour  for peak times, and in Southern Europe and small cities, the prices can be as low as  €10-25/hour  for off-peak times.

Padel Market Size

Padel business is booming. The padel market size is currently estimated at  US$327 million  in 2022 and is forecasted to grow at  9.6%  through 2027 (Brainy Insights).

Most of the market is made up of the sales of rackets, shoes, bags, and other accessories.

Padel Tournaments

In 2023, there are  55  major pickleball tournaments held in  24  countries across the top three professional tours: the Premier Padel Tour, the World Padel Tour, and the A1 Padel Tour.

These tours will award  €8.25 million in prize money .

The Premier Padel Tour spans 8 tournaments across 7 nations, awarding  €3.3 million  in prize money. The Premier Padel Tour is men’s only due to a controversial exclusivity contract between the World Padel Tour and the Padel Players Association.

The 2023 World Padel Tour is composed of  28  tournaments and will disperse  €2.95 million  in prize money.

The 2023 A1 Padel Tour spans  19 tournaments  in  14 countries  from February 13 to December 10, 2023. The A1 Padel Tour has roughly  €2 million  in prize money. The Open category A1 Padel Tour tournaments award €90,000 and the Master’s category tournaments award €110,000.

Below is a full list of the tournaments by country. Spain dominates with a total of  18  tournaments across the three tours. Mexico comes up second with  4  tournaments and Italy third with  3  tournaments.

Padel, another rapidly growing racket game, has designs on becoming an Olympic sport

The sport is currently most popular in spain, argentina and italy, by andrew dampf | associated press • published july 13, 2023 • updated on july 13, 2023 at 3:02 pm.

Padel, the fastest growing racket sport in the world among amateurs, is also making big strides at the professional level.

“In Italy — and the world — this sport has no limits,” said Angelo Binaghi, who oversees the sport as president of the Italian tennis and padel federation in a country where it is growing the fastest.

The nine medals handed out at the European Games in Poland represented the first time the sport was contested at an event organized under the Olympics umbrella. Teams from Spain — the worldwide leader in padel — won gold in men’s and mixed doubles, while Italy won in women’s doubles.

“It was a big step for our sport,” International Padel Federation president Luigi Carraro said. “We showed that we have all of the necessary characteristics to become an Olympic sport."

As the son of Franco Carraro, a former International Olympic Committee member and still an honorary member, Luigi Carraro has plenty of insight into how the IOC works.

“I think the IOC is analyzing us very closely. They follow all of our big events,” Carraro said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Already with 71 national federations to bolster its international reputation, the IPF could aim for Olympic inclusion as an add-on sport proposed by a future games’ local organizing committee. The 2032 Olympics in Brisbane is the earliest possibility. But padel might struggle on one key area that the IOC prizes lately: its appeal to youths.

Recent add-on sports like breaking, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing appear to check the youth box better than padel, which has found success in converting tennis players and in a social setting for adults.

The similarity to tennis could also be a drawback.

Played in doubles inside a cage that is smaller than a tennis court, padel is a cross between tennis and squash with players allowed to hit the ball off the glass and metallic mesh walls that surround the court.

Last year, International Tennis Federation president David Haggerty was voted down in his attempt for the ITF to take over the International Padel Federation.

Another issue for padel is that so far only two countries excel at the highest level of the sport: The top 10 players in the World Padel Tour rankings for both men and women are all either Spanish or Argentine.

“Padel is very strong in countries like Spain, Argentina and Italy. But not everywhere,” top-ranked Arturo Coello said. “So it still needs development in other countries and that’s why we need the Olympics.”

But padel’s growth rate is impressive.

There are currently 25 million people playing padel in 110 countries compared to 16 million two years ago. The entire padel industry is valued at 2 billion euros (more than $2 billion) and is forecast to surpass 4 billion euros by 2026, according to a recent report from Deloitte.

“The numbers go beyond what we could have even imagined a few years ago,” Carraro said. “Once you try padel you fall in love with it and you never stop playing.”

Plus, the sport is only now arriving in the United States and India — the two big markets that the IPF has targeted for its next phase of development.

In the U.S., padel will compete with  pickleball , another rapidly growing tennis spinoff.

“One discipline doesn’t exclude the other,” Carraro said. “Pickleball can grow, squash and badminton can grow and padel can definitely grow.”

The Italian Tennis Federation added padel to its name last year. And it’s easy to see why.

There are currently 1.2 million padel players in Italy and 3.1 million tennis players. But the number of padel players grew by 30% last year compared to 3% for tennis. If growth continues at that rate, padel will surpass tennis as the country’s most widely played racket sport around the end of the decade.

The padel boom in Italy was helped by the coronavirus pandemic when many sports clubs converted their fields for futsal (the sport known in Italy as “calcetto”) to padel courts when play in bigger team sports was suspended.

“It makes no difference to padel’s growth whether it gets into the Olympics or not,” Binaghi said. “The Olympics are overvalued and padel shows that. Look at what a phenomenon it’s become without going to the Olympics. That’s why I’ve told Carraro that he should focus on other issues, not the Olympics. We hardly noticed when tennis wasn’t in the Olympics. It’s irrelevant.”

One issue that Carraro is spending a lot of time on lately is how to resolve having two rival tours for pro padel players: the more established World Padel Tour and Premier Padel, which the international federation created together with Paris Saint-Germain soccer club president Nasser al-Khelaifi and Qatar Sports Investments last year — backed by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar’s ruling emir and a big fan of the sport.

Top players compete on both circuits.

There’s also the smaller A1 padel circuit, which recently received investment from Yankee Global Enterprises, the company that runs the baseball team.

“For us it’s important that there’s only one tour,” Carraro said. “Whatever tour it is, it’s key that players are able to choose when and where they play .”

Besides other stops, Premier Padel features four “majors” in Qatar, Rome, Paris and Mexico — where the sport was created in 1969.

The Rome tournament is being held at the same Foro Italico venue that hosts the Italian Open tennis tournament and the Paris event is held at Roland Garros.

Total prize money in Rome is 875,000 euros ($960,000). That's 525,000 euros ($575,000) for men and 350,000 euros ($385,000) for women — who are making their Premier Padel debut.

Matt wallace captures european masters in playoff, ends dp world tour drought, share this article.

Matt Wallace needed 73 holes to end a six-year drought.

The 34-year-old, who won for the first time on the PGA Tour in 2023, didn’t have a good year in the United States, finishing 112th in the FedEx Cup standings to miss out on the playoffs.

If his offseason goal was to right the ship, he’s off to an excellent start.

Wallace captured the 2024 Omega European Masters on Sunday at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland, breaking a six-year winless drought on the DP World Tour. Wallace led throughout the week, but he had to go to extra holes against Alfredo Garcia-Heredia to pick up his fifth win on the DP World Tour.

“Knackered, that was a hard day,” Wallace said. “It wasn’t easy, but I felt there was a score out there but couldn’t get anything going.”

Wallace shot even par on Sunday, but Garcia-Heredia birdied the last to get to 11 under and tie Wallace, fording the playoff. Both players tee shots found the fairway, but Wallace stuffed his approach and buried the birdie putt.

Andrew Johnston, better known as Beef, had his best finish in four years, placing third.

The field is headlined by England's Matthew Fitzpatrick .

Fitzpatrick has won the tournament twice and is playing the European Masters for the eighth time.

Besides the Omega European Masters, Wallace has played in just two DP World Tour events this season. He tied for 15th at the KLM Open and finished eighth at the British Masters.

During the PGA Tour season, he played in 20 events with 13 missed cuts and only one top-10 finish (T4 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson ). The Englishman finished 110th in the FedEx Cup standings, but secured his card until the end of the 2025 season thanks to his victory in the 2023 Corales Puntacana Championship.
