The Epic Tomato  adventure travel experiences fall into five 'terrain' categories (jungle, desert, mountain, polar, and rivers) and are designed to embrace a new emerging definition of 'luxury' adventure. These excursions offer the authenticity of an earned experience and the chance to witness something truly unique about a destination that often goes overlooked when traveling with others. The company even offers a series of "Epic Weekends" for those in need of a bit of adventure, but don't have a lot of spare time for an extended getaway.

One of the Epic Tomato's premiere itineraries takes travelers to the Antarctic where they spend 18 days traveling on skis across the frozen continent. While there, they'll have the opportunity to explore places that few humans ever get a chance to see and even make first ascents on several snowcapped peaks.

Abercrombie & Kent's Extreme Adventures Portfolio Opens Up New Worlds

Adventurers willing to push some boundaries should take a look at Abercrombie & Kent's  portfolio of unique options. Several of these extreme itineraries have even been named "Tour of a Lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler in the past, including "Norway - On the Trail of the Polar Bear (2009)" and "Egypt - Traces of Lost Civilizations (2010)." The company offers luxury and private excursions to some remote corners of the globe that are sure to enchant travelers while providing them with plenty of amenities to keep them comfortable along the way too.

A&K's itineraries aren't cheap, but they are some of the best in the business. For instance, the company's Southern Africa Safari by River & Rail will set you back $14,495, but it take just 18 guests on a 13 day excursion by boat and train through some of the most amazing landscapes the African continent has to offer.

The leading expedition company on Kilimanjaro, Tusker Trail also offers unique journeys to other fantastic destinations as well. For instance, the company's Mongolia Trek takes travelers across the Altai Mountains on horseback, while other itineraries lead clients to Nepal, Bhutan, Patagonia, Peru, and beyond.

Despite traveling in expedition style, the food is exceptional, and Tusker's guides are always top notch. Plus, group sizes are generally kept small and the activities are a great blend of adventure, culture, and history. The Tusker catalog of trips may not be as deep as some of the companies on this list, but each itinerary that they offer is exceptionally well done.

Each year, Sobek offers some of the most unique and amazing travel experiences around, with an occasional one-time trip that simply can't be found anywhere else. The company has partnered with such organizations as National Geographic, The North Face, and The New York Times to create one of a kind adventures for travelers looking for truly great experiences in just about every corner of the globe. For instance, there are few other outfitters that offer excursions to Papua New Guinea , yet MTS provides travelers with that opportunity, not to mention many, many others.

G Adventures Active and Expeditions Vacations

G Adventures has a number of "active" and "expedition" level trips that will push travelers to their personal limits. G is well known for its affordable, small group trips to more than 100 destinations around the world. But, the company particularly specializes in excursions to Peru and treks along the Inca Trail , having helped pioneer the rise in popularity for that four-day hike. If you're looking for a classic trek on just about every continent, chances are G Adventures has you covered.

Geographic Expeditions: Trips to Remote and Challenging Destinations

Geographic Expeditions has a portfolio of adventurous overland tours, treks, walks, and expeditionary voyages to the world's most astonishing places. GeoEx was the first American company to negotiate protocols for groundbreaking journeys in China, Nepal, Vietnam, Bhutan, Iran, Central Asia, and the former Soviet Union for instance, and it continues to open up new destinations all the time. If you want to visit a specific destination, but can't seem to find anyone who offers itineraries there, give GeoEx a shot. Chances are, they can make that trip a reality. For example, the company offers organized excursions to Iran , a place that few other outfitters have access to.

Hastings Overland Shows the Wild Side of British Columbia

The Jeep is equipped with a rooftop tent, a camp stove, refrigerated cooler, and more. Extreme Travel Adventures: The Most Extreme Vacations in the US

xtreme travel camp

One of the best parts of travel is the ability to step out of your comfort zone. After all, the whole point of taking time out of your everyday life is to enjoy something new, right? While lazy beach vacations certainly have their place, nothing quite feels like pushing yourself and trying something a little more exciting.

The idea of “extreme vacations” may not be for everyone, but if you’re ready to take the plunge and walk on the wild side during your next vacation, one of the best places to do so is in the USA. From white-water rafting to camping in expansive national parks and everything in between, we’ve put together a collection of some of the most extreme vacations in the US!

Travel on: an adventure tour to the USA

Surfing in Sandy Beach, Honolulu

Choosing the best extreme vacation for you

“Extreme” means something different to everybody, so the first question you’ll need to answer is what does it mean to you? For some, it might mean roughing it in the great outdoors, putting aside creature comforts like indoor plumbing and wi-fi. For others, it means getting your heart pounding through physically exerting days and testing their own limits. Before you book an extreme vacation of your own, there are a few things to consider.

  • Time of year. If you’re the type of adventurer looking to go cross-country-skiing and camping, you’re probably not going to want to leave in July. On the other hand, travellers looking to hike or trek should consider the soaring temperatures that hit the United States in the summer months, and prepare accordingly! Figure out when your perfect adventure fits into your schedule, and go from there.
  • Interests. It’s always great to stretch yourself and try new things, but you should also make sure you have some interest in what you’ll be doing, as well as the ability to do it. For example, before booking a multi-day hiking tour, try to get out for a couple of practise hikes back home first. It’ll let you know if you enjoy it, and get you prepared for the bigger trip!
  • Location. Is there a state you’ve always wanted to visit? Maybe you dream of surfing off the coast of California, or snowboarding in Colorado is on top of your bucket list? Carefully consider what part of the United States you want to visit: the country is larger and more diverse than you may have thought!
  • Ability level. It’s worth repeating: before you head out on an extreme vacation, make sure you’ll be able to complete it safely and while having fun! If your dream trip seems like too much of a stretch right now, spend some time mentally and physically preparing before you book it, and always have an emergency plan in case the worst happens.

Extreme activities to do in the US

  • Ice trekking: While you may not imagine the US having plentiful glaciers for daring travellers to trek across, the country certainly delivers! Spend your days braving the cold and taking in some of the most incredible glacial views.
  • Camping: If there’s one thing the US knows how to do, it’s camp. Spend a night under the stars in the desert, or hike deep into a lush forest. It’s the perfect way to get back to nature.
  • Digital Detox: This may not seem extreme to everyone, but for some, leaving the technology at home is a leap of faith! The US offers plenty of retreats and opportunities for reconnecting with yourself in a phone-free zone.
  • White-water rafting: The thrill of guiding your raft through rapids and down waterfalls is one that keeps many adventurers coming back for more time and time again. Will you be one of them?
  • Hiking: There are countless hiking trails in the United States, from sprawling national parks to local, winding trails. If you’re a hiker, a visit to at least a couple of them must be on your list.
  • Skiing: Skiing, snowboarding, or any other alpine sport enthusiasts flock to the United States, and it’s easy to see why! From bunny hills to black diamond slopes, you’ll be able to find an adventure that fits your definition of extreme.

Alaska: Ocean Wildlife to Interior Wilderness Adventure

This 11-day tour really has it all! Come face to face with bears, visit three different national parks, and even take a helicopter ride to take it all in. This is a great tour for animal lovers: not only will you see bears, you’ll enjoy a visit to the Alaska Sealife Centre, go whale-watching, and get to see all of the incredible animals that call the wild state of Alaska home.

Grand Canyon Rafting

Did someone say white-water rafting? If you’re looking for a white-water adventure that really allows travellers to connect with nature, this is it. Over the course of this 8-day tour, travellers will raft nearly 300 miles while camping on riverbanks. It’s a truly unforgettable experience, by anyone’s definition of “extreme!”

White water rafting in Ocoee, US

No matter how you picture your next trip – whether it’s lounging on the beach or powering through rapids – the most important thing is for it to be exactly what you want it to be. The best part? With some research and planning, it can be!

What’s your idea of “extreme?” What’s the most extreme thing you’ve done on vacation?

Everything You Wanted to Know about CTeen Xtreme America Out West

Q. what is cteen xtreme.

A. CTeen Xtreme is a unique travel camp geared for today’s American high school student. Our program aims to boost your teen’s self-esteem with extreme adventures, extreme trips, and an extreme love for being Jewish. The adventurous hikes and thrilling trips are designed to boost the self-confidence, sense of responsibility, communication and survival skills of your teen.

Q. Who is CTeen Xtreme for?

A. Jewish teens in grades 9–12, regardless of affiliation, who want to enjoy the summer of a lifetime. No previous experience in outdoor adventure is necessary.

Q. How is CTeen Xtreme staffed?

A. Our staff members are handpicked for their dedication, experience in outdoor adventure and working with teenagers, as well as their warm and welcoming spirit. In addition to our dedicated directors and counselors, a wilderness first aid responder, a talented chef, and a fun-loving rabbi or rebbetzin will accompany us throughout our trip.

Q. Where does the trip start and end?

A. The trip starts in Denver, CO. Participants purchase a one-way flight from their hometown to Denver International Airport (DEN). There is a specific timeframe when your flight must arrive in Denver. Campers do not leave the airport.  The camp bus will pick up all participants from the airport, and the trip starts from there.

The trip ends in Los Angeles, CA. Participants purchase a one-way flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) back to their hometown. There is a specific timeframe when your flight must depart Los Angeles. Campers do not need to arrange their own rides to the airport.    The camp bus will bring everyone to the airport together, the camp staff will escort teens to their airline terminals, and the trip ends there. After registration, you will receive an online form to submit your teen’s flight information. If your teen will be staying in Los Angeles after the trip, local pick up will be available from the last camp location before the camp bus departs to the airport.

Q. Who can escort my teen in the airport?

A. If necessary, you should be able to escort your teen to his or her flight. Please contact your airline. It is generally possible to obtain a gate pass to escort an unaccompanied minor through security until the departure gate (e.g., Spirit Airlines ).  CTeen Xtreme staff will have the flight information of every camper and will be waiting at the airport to greet your teen in Denver and ensure that they join the rest of the camp group.

When available, we can put you in touch with the other parents of participants who are departing from the same airport, so that you can book the same flight. Additionally, a staff group flight will be available from/to New York. Please contact our office for further information.

If you wish, you can use airline unaccompanied minor service, however, please notify us before booking so that we can give you the correct information of the staff member who will meet your child at the airport.

Q. How much does the trip cost?

A. The full price for CTeen Xtreme is $3,650; the subsidized price is $2,595.

We are only able to offer a subsidized price thanks to generous donors and grants and it is limited to certain geographical areas. We normally charge the full price for this trip. If you are financially capable, we ask that you choose to pay the full-price option, so that we can extend the subsidies to as many who need it. We leave it up to your discretion. Either payment option obtains equal trip participation.

Q. Where will the camp be staying?

A. CTeen Xtreme campers will lodge at hotels, cabins, and dormitories. Throughout the trip, we will camp out overnight one time. We will periodically rotate the rooming assignments to provide a better opportunity to meet new friends and to enhance the group dynamics.

Q. How will the camp be traveling?

A. CTeen Xtreme will travel on a state-of-the-art coach bus, which is equipped with electrical outlet capacity.

Q. What if a camper can’t participate in every activity?

A. Participants are expected to be able to participate in most activities. If there are restrictions for your teen in regard to a specific activity, we ask that you please note this in the registration form, so we can plan for any special arrangements needed.

Q. What kind of community service hours does this trip offer?

A. Along the route, we will stop and volunteer at  2-3 non-profit organizations.

Volunteer work can include helping pack food, clothing, children’s school packets, or hygiene kits for needy families. Depending on availability, CTeen Xtreme partakes in building, painting or maintenance projects for subsidized housing developments.

Q. Is cell phone usage permitted on the trip?

A. Participants are permitted to bring a cell phone on the program. However, CTeen Xtreme regards cell phone use during the program as a privilege. Participants must exercise discretion when using them (e.g., respect sleeping roommates, etc.). If necessary, program staff reserve the right to revoke the privilege if it is abused.

Parents and friends who wish to contact a participant during the trip should keep in mind that part of the trip is in the Pacific Time Zone (California & Nevada), and part of the trip is in the Mountain Time Zone (Colorado, Utah & Arizona). The group will typically return to the lodging in the early evening, and that is the best time to call.

Q. Will there be internet access on the trip?

A. A handful of the hotels, dormitories, and lodges where we will be staying will have internet stations available, and participants are welcome to use them during free time—usually for an additional fee. However, often there are only one or two such stations available, and many eager customers. It is best not to expect participants to have online access during the program. We strongly discourage bringing a laptop or any expensive communication devices on the trip due to increased risk of theft or damage.

Q.What does the camp fee cover?

A. Sleeping accommodations, meals, in-trip transportation, and all program activities are covered by the core program tuition. The airplane tickets to Denver, CO and from Los Angeles, CA, as well as extra airline baggage fees are not covered in the general tuition.

Q. What should I bring?

A. You can find the packing list here . We highly recommend that you only bring one main piece of luggage to check onto the plane (duffel bags are preferred, but rolling suitcases can also work) and one backpack for daily travel on the road.

Q. What food will be served on this trip?

A. Our kosher chef will serve a tasty and nutritious menu. Please contact us regarding any allergies or specific diets so that we can prepare appropriately. In cities with large Jewish populations, such as Los Angeles, we will get a taste of the local cuisine at some of the local kosher restaurants.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
