Need an excuse to wear leggings to the office? These ‘yoga dress pants’ might be your solution

Whether you're in an office or work from home (like me), we all know the struggle of changing out of comfy clothes when the need to look professional presents itself. While I usually opt for a matching athleisure set on most days, I don't have much to look forward to wearing when preparing for a slew of Zoom calls or in-person meetings.

So, I started looking for more work-appropriate alternatives for my favorite pair of leggings . This was a bit tricky considering all of the boxes they had to check: comfortable, professional and functional. Thankfully, Amazon led me to a unique solution — yoga dress pants.

What makes the yogipace straight leg yoga dress pant different.

You read that right. Yoga pants made for the office do exist. With over 10,000 five-star ratings and incredible reviews, shoppers can’t stop recommending this pair by Yogipace. And now that I’ve tried them myself, I can wholeheartedly agree. Here’s why:

When it comes to purchasing leggings or yoga pants, I typically worry that the material will either be too sheer or thin, to the point that they don't offer enough warmth. (In my own shopping experience, this is something that occurs all too often.) However, these Yogipace options are thicker, and therefore, not see-through, and even include a wide, pull-on waistband that I find to be incredibly comfortable.

In fact, the comfort level of these pants is up to par with just about every pair of yoga pants that I own. I have the material to thank, which is a combination of nylon and spandex that feels as soft and lightweight as my go-to leggings .

Why I like this product

They are practical, stretchy and come in a variety of sizes.

The pair comes in multiple different colors, including patterns like pinstripes and plaid. Plus, the belt loops on the waistband add an extra-chic touch. All of them are designed with two back pockets, while select styles also have two front pockets for even more storage. They are spacious enough for carrying keys or credit cards during work-related events or while I'm on the go with my dog.

As far as fit goes, I got a standard inseam of 31 inches but would’ve been better off with the petite option of 29 inches. With the current length I have now, they’re a bit too long on me and scrunch up at the bottom. The good news is that the brand offers several inseam options for petite, regular and tall sizes, so you can find the ideal length that works for your height. There's also a few more styles available that befit an office setting, including a cropped hem and a high-waisted relaxed fit.

What to consider.

The only downside is that I wish the fabric provided a little bit more support. I'm used to leggings or yoga pants that pull everything together and work better for physical activities . However, these tend to slide down during walks or even errand runs.

What makes these yoga pants truly exceptional is their versatility. They look great paired with a blouse, blazer and flats for work-related events — it's not every day you find pants that give off a professional appearance yet are comfortable enough to wear all day. On the other hand, I can also throw on a sweatshirt and sneakers to create a comfy-casual look that I can rock any time of day.

The days of needing to be uncomfortable at the office (or on a Zoom call) are over! Now, there are so many yoga leggings that double as work pants – AKA yoga dress pants – that nobody will ever realize you’re literally wearing your workout (or couch lounging) clothes to the office!

Athleisure is thriving and I don’t think it’s going anywhere. Ever. Personally, I have two pairs of jeans and 20 pairs of joggers and/or leggings. Why feel constrained when you can feel free and comfortable?! (BTW, the Netflix series Explained has an excellent episode about the athleisure industry, appropriately titled “ Athleisure .” I highly recommend checking it out!)

Of course, it’s easy to wear leisure apparel when you’re spending your days watching Netflix, playing with the kids, or buying things you don’t need at Target, but what about for the office*? You can’t possibly wear yoga pants for work, right?!

Oh, my friends. Buckle up. There are many different yoga dress pants options, aka comfy clothes you can wear to the office without anybody having a clue.

*This post was originally written pre-pandemic, back when people actually went to offices, and we weren’t all living the athleisure lifestyle. Since this post was first published, many new companies have begun making fashionable and comfortable work apparel and I have updated this post to include some of the best new styles.

The Best Yoga Dress Pants

This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about the dress pant yoga pant from BetaBrand , and it probably won’t be the last. I LOVE all things BetaBrand. Their yoga pants are comfortable, flattering, and well-made. Look at those ladies in the picture – can you honestly say it’s immediately apparent they’re wearing dressy yoga pants to work? I think not!

The secret to these pants is the four-way stretch. Some styles have faux zippers or faux cuffs. Big news: You can get yoga dress pants with pockets! The pants are all available in sizes XXS-3X and come in various lengths, including tall and petite. I have found that BetaBrand pants are true to size.

They’re all wrinkle-resistant, and they are easy to care for, too. They’re even machine washable! Wash them in cold water, and then let them air dry!

BetaBrand sizing used to stop at XXL, but they recently increased their size options so they officially have plus size yoga dress pants ! The pants in their extended size range are also available in different lengths, so now nearly all women should be able to find something comfy to wear to work!

If the skinny leg journey pants make me feel as buoyant as she looks, I am totally in. Also, I really love her entire outfit. It screams office chic without trying too hard. I talk about this particular style more below.

One reviewer called the Jett style “reverse mullet pants,” but she meant it in a good way. I swear! The front of these skinny leg yoga pants features shiny ponte material, while the back features a matte material. Party in the front, office in the back!

SoHo Skinny Leg Joggers

During the pandemic, I made a bit of a style switch. Actually, can we call it “style”? I went from wearing comfortable but constricting yoga pants to wearing baggier joggers. I’m certain I’m not alone when I say that most of the time I didn’t bother trying to be remotely stylish since I didn’t ever leave my house. Now, though, with things opening back up, I’ve been a bit wary about giving up my extremely comfortable wardrobe.

Thank goodness, then, for these jogger work pants from BetaBrand! I have a feeling one could wear these Soho Joggers to the office and truly feel like they’re wearing PJs!

TRAVEL Yoga Dress Pants

Frequent travelers are going to LOVE BetaBrand’s travel-friendly dress pant yoga pants! The Journey Pants will take you straight from the airplane to the boardroom. They feature SIX fully functional pockets, including four front pockets, two of them with zippers, and two back pockets! They’re still wrinkle-resistant and feature the classic four-way stretch, but these pants have the benefit of also being microbial, which is awesome because you never know what’s hiding on an airplane.

What stores carry BetaBrand? You’re pretty limited. Just head to the BetaBrand website! While you can’t really find them at other stores, BetaBrand frequently has sales and coupons, so you shouldn’t have to pay full price.

It’s rare, but sometimes a brand comes along and steals my heart, and right now that brand is Universal Standard . If you veer toward a more classic style, I highly recommend checking them out. They are, in my opinion, at the forefront of size inclusivity. Everything they sell is available in sizes 00-40. No more falling in love with an item only to see it’s not available in your size! Not only that, but they show how every style looks on an array of different body types.

Moro Pocket Ponte Pants

Universal Standard describes this Moro Pocket style as “having the polished look of pants with the feeling of leggings.” They’re made using a four-way stretch fabric that doesn’t wrinkle or crease and that is pill-resistant. I love the zipper at the ankle and I guarantee you these are extremely comfortable. They look like the best yoga dress pants!

Dylan Luxe Twill Joggers

Joggers that nobody will ever guess are joggers? Yes, please! I think Universal Standard nailed it when they created these office-friendly joggers !

Athleta Endless Pant

Sometime during the Pandemic I discovered Athleta and I fell in love. Hard. I believe 50 percent of the clothing I own is now from Athleta and, sadly, that’s not an exaggeration. OK, I’m kidding. I’m not sad at all. I’m living the comfy life and I love it! While Athleta is ground zero for athleisure, they also have plenty of styles that would work in an office, too, like the Endless Pant , which is available in traditional and plus sizes.

J.Crew Pixie Pant

Can we all just take a second to admire the magnificent zipper on the back of these pants? I don’t normally draw attention to my derriere, but that silver zipper is begging to be admired. (In a non-creepy way, of course!) J.Crew calls their Pixie Pant a “legging pant,” which sounds like code for yoga stretch pants. They’re made of stretch ponte and have a high waist, so they’re sure to keep you feeling “tucked in” all day long.

These are available in Classic, Petite, and Tall, and sizes range from XXX-small to 3X.

M.M.LaFleur The Foster Pant

I first wrote this post years ago and I somehow forgot to include one of my absolute favorite pairs of pants of all time! The Foster Pant from M.M.LaFleur isn’t cheap. At $195 they’re easily the most expensive styles on this list. That’s not normally my jam, BUT these pants are so worth it. I wrote an M.M.LaFleur review a few years ago and received a pair and they are absolutely fantastic and worth the cost. The material is thick but stretchy and comfortable. They’re wrinkle-resistant and machine washable. They look good on AND they feel good on. Seriously, these pants are so fetch (is it happening yet?!) that if I made a list of my all-time favorite pants, they would be #1.

Summersalt The Everyday Seamed Legging Pant

Summersalt is speaking my love language with the everyday legging because I do want to wear leggings everywhere. Every single day. According to Summersalt, these have “all of the buttery softness of your favorite leggings with the polish of a pant. Wear these to the office, out to brunch, or jet-setting around the world.” These, too, look like the best yoga dress pants and they are available in sizes XS-2X.

NYDJ Ponte Pants

I have heard nothing but rave reviews for NYDJ Ponte Pants . The Ponte Trouser Pants above are a classic style that’s perfect for the office, and there’s also a slim leg option.

Plus-size gals, be sure to check out NYDJ’s plus-size ponte dress pants ! They’re available in sizes 14-28, and NYDJ suggests going down one size to achieve the perfect fit.

This post gets updated rather frequently, which means I’m always finding new styles to fall in love with myself. These Kinetic Pull-On Pants from the new-to-me brand Ministry of Style are perfection! Unlike most of the styles on this list, this pant features a relaxed fit! Granted, I don’t love the current relaxed denim look, but relaxed dress pants for the office? I’m all in! These are wrinkle-resistant and made using a four-way stretch material.

Kiragrace Perfect Wide Leg Pant

For the longest time, I would have said that yoga pants **needed** to have a skinny leg but recently I purchased a pair of wide-legged yoga pants and they are seriously amazing. They’re so ridiculously comfortable and no part of my body feels constricted. While the ones I purchased aren’t office-friendly, this Perfect Wide Leg Pant from Kiragrace definitely is!

Marycrafts Stretch Yoga Pants for Work

Amazon claims to be selling a lot of dressy yoga pants , but really, they mostly have casual styles. I’m not hating – everyone needs yoga pants but I question whether most of them are actually yoga pants for work . These Marycrafts Stretch Yoga Pants for Work are different though. The brand claims they’re the most comfortable pants you’ll ever wear to work. If you don’t want to take their word for it, they have great reviews and cost less than $25!

SPANX The Perfect Back Seam Skinny Pants

Over the past few years, SPANX has expanded from its initial focus on shapewear and they now have a pretty robust lineup of leggings. While some of their styles may not be work-appropriate, these back seam skinny pants definitely are! Made using a four-way stretch material, you’ll be comfortable and stylish all day! This style is available in sizes XS-3X. They’re also available in petite and petite plus sizes!

Yogipace Straight Leg Dressy Yoga Pants

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to BetaBrand’s dress pant yoga pants, you might want to check out the Yogipace brand on Amazon. They have a couple of different styles that cost less than $40 each!

These pants have been reviewed more than 5,000 times and maintain a 4.5-star rating. The reviews, including this one, are so good that I think I need a pair in my life immediately:

These Rekucci Secret Figure dressy yoga pants from Amazon are sure to be a fit if you’re looking for color options! There are 26 different colors in sizes 2-18. The pants also feature a secret “tummy control” panel.

Liverpool Jeans Company Kelsey Ponte Knit Trousers

If you’re searching for a Betabrand alternative, look no further than these Kelsey Ponte Knit Trousers from Liverpool Jeans Company. Words used to describe these pants include “comfortable,” “polished,” and “work-wardrobe staple.” All of that sounds perfect. Side note: Nordstrom has carried this style for years, which leads me to believe they are a favorite among their customers! They’re available in both traditional and plus sizes .

Lisette L Pants

Whether you’re looking for basic black or perhaps white and pink dress yoga pants, Lisette L , which is based in Montreal, has you covered! This store has a great selection of casual styles you can wear to work! Some prints are definitely more casual than others, but for many styles, nobody would ever be able to tell that you’re actually wearing your weekend best to work! In addition to traditional sizes, Lisette L also carries plus-size options, although the number of prints is not nearly as abundant.

One of the things I love most about Everlane is its transparent pricing. Their prices are fair and they tell you exactly how every dollar you spend is allocated. Not only that but their clothes are ethically made AND gorgeous. This is a company you’ll feel good supporting, if you’re not already doing so, and you’ll feel even better wearing The Dream Pant to the office.

Yes, this post is all about yoga pants for work, but reviewers of The Dream Pant mention them being so comfortable you can easily sleep in them! I figure that if you can sleep in them, then you can definitely wear them doing myriad athletic endeavors!

How’s this for a review (pulled off the Everlane website): “It’s slimming, comfortable and the perfect pant to meeting. It’s actually a sweat pant disguised as a suit pant. I get many compliments on it. It’s elegantly slimming and flattering.”

What to consider when shopping for the perfect pair of yoga dress pants

Comfort: Look for pants made of soft, stretchy fabric that allows for a full range of motion. Even if you’re not actually going to do yoga (I’ll never tell!), the best yoga dress pants will make it possible for you to move from a tree pose to a downward-facing dog without thinking twice.

Fit: Choose pants that fit well around the waist and hips, and don’t bunch or ride up during movement. Personally, I look for pants with a wider waistband. 

Breathability: Look for pants made of breathable fabric that wicks away moisture and prevents sweat buildup.

Style: Consider your personal style and choose pants that make you feel confident and comfortable.

Durability: Look for pants made of high-quality materials that will hold up over time and withstand repeated washings.

• Opaque: All leggings and/or yoga pants are not created equal. The last thing you want is to wear see-through pants to the office. 

Yoga Pants for Work: Is Comfort Here to Stay?

After a year where we were quarantined in our houses and offices had to reconfigure their workforces, I feel confident saying we’re heading into an era where more and more people will permanently work from home. Working from home = comfy clothing all day long.

I’m fairly certain I’m not alone in saying I’d be happy wearing my joggers all year round, but there are still going to be days when most of us will need to appear for in-person or virtual meetings. On those days, dressy yoga pants will save the day. You’ll feel good, look professional, and nobody will have a clue that you’re actually as comfortable as all get out.

And while we agree, we found that the material felt a little clingier than other options, which is why they didn't make the initial list. Tips for Buying

Listen—no one knows how you travel better than you do. Maybe you're a guy who likes to pace the aisles of the plane, maybe you're a guy who spills his ginger ale every damn time there's turbulence, maybe you're a guy who sits in the window seat, falls asleep, and stays put. There are pants to accommodate all of those things.

Whatever your habits are, look for pants that pertain to them. I would recommend loose, baggy fits and elastic waistbands every time for maximum comfort, but if you want to stay sleek and sharp, there are chino-style, flex-fabric options that still put the business in casual. As a longtime health and fitness writer, I’ve had the privilege of testing out a wide spectrum of activewear — and Lululemon continues to prevail as one of my favorites. But my reverence didn’t begin once I started my career; I’ve been a fan of Lululemon ever since high school (when they were still pretty new to the U.S. market). I remember saving all of my pennies to buy one of their “I <3 Running” water bottles (which perfectly captured my cross-country athlete identity at the time, duh). 

Fast-forward a good 17 years, and I’ve worn the brand during so many big moments in my life: hitting personal bests in a race, taking big steps in my career, and traveling all over the world. All this to say, I’ve tested a lot of Lulu gear — from leggings to tanks to jackets, and everything in between — and honed in on my favorites from the brand. And when I'm looking to add new pieces to my wardrobe, I always check the “ We Made Too Much” section's under-the-radar curation of clothes, outerwear, and accessories. After pouring through Lululemon's current inventory, I’ve scoped out the 12 items I’m eyeing for future trips — and they're all starting at just $19.

Pleated Open-knit High-rise Tennis Skirt

It’s looking like the "tenniscore" trend is here to stay (looking at you, "Challengers" movie), and I’m here for it. For instance, I love this classic pleated tennis skirt look — both for, you know, playing tennis, and also with a cute little T-shirt and sneakers while out and about. This is the perfect travel addition if you’re headed to a resort destination this spring (or honestly, anywhere that’s warm).

The silky smooth material also feels like a second skin on your body, so you forget you’re even wearing them. This bag constantly sells out on Lululemon’s site, so I’m truly shocked it’s available in their “We Made Too Much” section.

While Lululemon’s Align Pants get most of the recognition, I’m equally partial to the Fast and Free High-rise Tight. I’ve had the same pair for years, and it’s held up flawlessly throughout countless miles (both running and travel). Like the Aligns, these leggings fit like a second skin; they are buttery smooth, the perfect thickness for warmer weather, and have just the right amount of compression. And right now, you can snag these tights in the classic 25-inch style , the version with pockets (!), or even the cropped 23-inch style — all starting at $59. Tapered-Leg Mid-rise Pant 7/8 Length Luxtreme

Lululemon may be known for leggings, but they also do pants particularly well. That includes these tapered-leg trousers, which are fantastic for travel. They’re made with one of the brand’s signature sweat-wicking and breathable fabrics, offering four-way stretch (translation: ultimate comfort). They’re available in six different versatile, neutral colors, perfect for any style or occasion. 

Swiftly Tech Short-sleeve Shirt 2.0

I’m not usually a big fan of activewear T-shirts (I often find them uncomfortable or limiting), but this Tech shirt from Lululemon is one that I regularly wear. It is perfectly lightweight, breathable, and has a really nice cut — so it’s perfect for exercise or daily wear. Or, if you’re more of a sleeveless person, I swear by their tank in the same fabric (find it here for just $29 ).

Bodysuits are great travel staples. After all, they function as a shirt, but take up virtually zero space in your luggage — and I dare you to find a comfier one than this gorgeous piece from Lululemon. It’s made with the brand’s signature Nulu fabric, which is silky smooth to the touch and feels incredible against your skin. This bodysuit, in particular, makes for a great layering piece under a button-up shirt or jacket — or it looks lovely on its own with a pair of jeans or a skirt. Speaking of great travel pants, I’m obsessed with these cargo pants. As always, they’re made with performance fabric to keep you cool and comfy during springtime travels. Of course, since they’re cargo pants, there are pockets, galore — but other notable features include a comfy elastic waistband, stretchy material, and a just-right high-rise fit. These must have just been added to the “We Made Too Much” section because a shocking number of sizes are still available. Each color option is stunning, but I’m about to add the java brown hue to my cart.

Hooded Mid-length Utility Jacket

Add jackets to the running list of clothing that Lululemon makes particularly well. And can we talk about this quintessential rain jacket? The oversized cut is so effortlessly cool — not to mention, incredibly functional for any spring travels. It’s water-repellent, windproof, and oh-so-easy to pack.

Transportation Security Administration agents in South Florida got a slithery surprise after the federal agency reported finding snakes in a passenger's pants at an airport checkpoint.

According to TSA, the reptilian discovery took place at the Miami International Airport on Friday.

The agency did not identify the passenger or say whether they were arrested.

Photos taken at the airport provided by TSA show two slender pink snakes outside of a small camo-colored bag, after apparently being pulled from the passenger's pants before they were able to board a plane.

Snakes found in passenger's pants turned over to Florida wildlife officers

After the discovery, TSA said it called the Customs and Border Protection Southeast Region and Miami-Dade Police for assistance.

It was not immediately known if the snakes were the passengers pets or whether the person was simply trying to transport them out of the city.

The snakes, TSA reported, were turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

We test both appliances in the Good Housekeeping Home Care & Cleaning Lab for how well they de-wrinkle a wide variety of fibers, fabrics and clothing items, how much steam they produce, how easy they are to use and more. Which is best for you depends on the type of clothing that makes up the majority of your wardrobe and how much time and effort you want to put into smoothing it. When to choose a clothes steamer

Lightweight, portable, easy to store and great for travel, a clothes steamer smooths fabrics right on the hanger. Many now have big water tanks and multiple settings for more power. Some steam continuously, while others do so when you press a trigger or button. They are a great option if you often need to smooth one item before heading out the door and mostly wear clothing with an unstructured, casual feel.

Having both a clothes steamer and a steam iron gives you the most options for achieving smooth, wrinkle-free clothes no matter what the fabric or style. If you need to make an either-or decision, clothes steamers are stellar for on-the-go de-wrinkling and giving garments a flowy, relaxed look and feel. An iron is your best bet if you prefer a flat, crisp, sharp vibe or frequently sew, quilt or do other crafts requiring strong steam, heat and pressure.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we dedicate hours to evaluating each steamer and iron we test. We measure the grams of steam they produce and at what rate they pump it out. We take temperatures in various spots on each iron's soleplate at several heat settings and track the high and low temperature swings as it heats up and cools down. For both appliances, we check how hot the handles and bodies get, for safety.

We weigh the appliances to determine how heavy they are to lift and hold, assess how user-friendly the controls are, how easy the water tank is to fill and see into and how long they take to heat up.

Finally, we twist and ball up cotton, linen, wool, silk, nylon and other synthetic fabrics and garments and allow the creases to set overnight. The next day, we iron or steam the swatches and garments, rating the smoothness using standard visual guides borrowed from the textiles industry all while checking for any spitting, spotting or dripping.

✔️ Water tank: If you expect to steam often or do several garments in one session, look for a large water tank for a longer steam time and a model that offers continuous steam over one that requires you to press a button to pump out the steam. The water tank should also be easy to remove, fill, replace and see through so you know when it needs refilling.

✔️ Design: If you will use the steamer occasionally or just for travel, consider a slim model that's compact, lightweight and easy to pack and store. Many mid-size handheld models now have small heated plates that mimic an iron's soleplate and give you the option to steam or press out wrinkles. Large professional steamers — the kind that magazine photos stylists use — have extra-large tanks for super long steam times, telescoping poles and hooks for holding garments. They can be wheeled to where you need them, but they do take up more storage space.

✔️ Water type: Most use regular tap water, but some brands recommend distilled, especially if your tap water is extremely hard. Check the product's use and care guide on the brand website for details on the type of water it requires.

✔️ Features: Steamers that offer multiple settings work best on both delicate and heavy fabrics. Attachments may include lint remover pads, brushes to fluff fabrics and protectors to shield delicate fabrics from hot steam. Some have on-board clamps to help set creases and pleats.

✔️ Size: An iron should be comfortable to lift and hold and not so heavy that it becomes a chore to use. Most fall within a range from about 2 pounds to almost 5 pounds. The heavier they are, the better they press out wrinkles, but a too-heavy iron makes ironing tiresome. To cover more ground quickly, choose an iron with a large soleplate and a large, see-through water tank.

✔️ Power: Generally, we've found that the best-performing irons require 1,700 to 1,800 watts of power to produce strong and long bursts of steam. Cordless irons are an option many prefer but they cool off quickly and need to be put back on the corded base every time you reposition the garment. Electronic controls in higher-end irons help ensure more precise fabric temperature settings and selections.

✔️ Soleplate: Ceramic and titanium soleplates are the most durable, provide the best glide and are easiest to clean. Stainless steel and non-stick work well when new, but can scratch and ultimately snag fabrics over time. And more holes in the soleplate don't guarantee more steam from the iron.

✔️ Safety: Most irons today automatically shut off in seconds or minutes when tipped. We prefer those that turn off quickly when landing in any direction, not just onto the soleplate. Some, designed for sewing and quilting, delay or don't shut off at all to help make crafting easier.

✔️ Features: Steam burst and spray features are helpful to dampen fabrics while ironing and for extra oomph removing stubborn wrinkles. Vertical steam works well for drapes, bed skirts and other home furnishings, though we've found a clothes steamer is actually more effective than an iron when used vertically. A steam station with a large, separate water tank, powerful steam and a sturdy base is good for quilting, sewing and handling big batches of rumpled garments. Nice extras include a button groove around the soleplate to iron around buttons and a retractable cord for easy storage.

Most fabrics handle steaming well. Even sheer, delicate ones, like silk can take light steam. Some fabrics like velvet, corduroy and lace do better with steaming than with ironing, as steaming doesn't flatten them like ironing can. The only fabrics where it's best to avoid steam — from a clothes steamer or an iron — are vinyl, fabrics with a waxy finish or garments with thin plastic trim or embellishments that steaming could melt. Steam leather and suede very carefully, if at all.

Yes! In fact, we recommend steaming to help freshen and deodorize hard-to-wash items like mattresses, throw pillows, athletic shoes and stuffed toys. Just be sure to pass the steamer over the fabric surface slowly for the time recommended by the manufacturer to sanitize fabrics. Steam also kills dust mites near the surface. After steaming, you must remember to vacuum the fabric surface to remove them.

Travel Adventures – Part 4: Moscow

This beautiful woman lingered for a moment on the steps at one of the several churches in the Sergeiv Posad Monastery. I thought she was absolutely beautiful.

So far in this journey we have visited some wonderful cities … Helsinki, Finland, Tallinn, Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia. We have traveled together along the waterways of Russia to such exotic sounding places as Mandrogy, Kitzy Island, Goritzy, Uglich, and Yaroslavl and seen the beauty of the countryside in between these towns. But our ship finally came to dock in Moscow, the capital of Russia and I really had no idea what to expect!

One advantage of travel tour is that you get a good general overview of an area. That’s the good news, of course. The bad news on most tours — and this tour certainly was no exception –was that you never did have a lot of time to explore on your own. The guides and the schedule kept you pretty busy all of the time. It was great for getting information and seeing a lot, but difficult for photographers who like to explore in more depth.

When we got to Moscow, we hopped on buses and were off to tour the city. Moscow is a huge city with so much traffic that I vowed never to complain about the traffic on Los Angeles freeways ever again. I couldn’t believe how tough you had to be to drive in this city. It played havoc with all schedules and timetables because what should have taken just 20 minutes to drive ended up taking an hour. One of the reasons is how they handle their traffic accidents. From what we understood and saw, cars involved in accidents were not allowed to move until both the police and the insurance adjuster came. So, a simple traffic accident could snarl things for hours. There is definitely a different viewpoint here than back home.

The traffic on every street no matter the hour seemed to be hectic.

The city of Moscow is upbeat with many shops, theaters, and restaurants and such. We saw shops with all of the latest and most expensive designers. All of the big brand names in clothing had shops. During this introductory tour, we were dropped off on a rather large street and told to walk through an arch into a huge open area. A large red brick/stone wall ran down one side and the most magnificent Russian Church we had seen so far was at the far end. The area was enormous and, of course, it was the famous Red Square. Behind the brick/stone wall was the Kremlin. I had to pause to take it all in, because never in my life would I have ever imagined myself standing there! The look on my sister and friend’s faces, told the same story that I was feeling … ABSOLUTE AWE!

We had some time to wander and walk by Lenin’s tomb before we had to return to the bus to continue the general tour of the city. 

From an overlook within the St. Basil Cathedral, you can get a fabulous overview of Red Square. The Kremlin wall is on the left side of the image; at the end of that wall is the Spasskaya Tower. The red building with two towers is the National Historical Museum, barely seen and tucked into the corner to the right of the Museum is Kazan Cathedral and along the right side is the turn of the century arcades of Gum’s department store.

Along the wall that separates the Kremlin from Red Square is Lenin’s tomb. His body has been on public display there since the year he died in 1924.

A night tour took us past some of the brightly lit gambling casinos in Moscow. The bouncing bus, combined with the bright neon lighting, brought a few interesting photo opportunities. We attended a wonderful concert that featured many of the traditional musical instruments of Russia — another photo opportunity not normally available in a theater, but because the audience was from the various tours and ships that were in Moscow that particular evening, we could take photos — but of course, not with flash, which is always a disturbance to the performers. As we left the concert, the moon was just rising over one of the beautiful cathedral spires. My friend Anne caught the shot (3rd below/right). She is quick and steady and got a round of applause when she “nailed it!”

Driving through Moscow’s downtown area at night was fascinating. It was bright with colored lights. Many casinos and restaurants were lit up and looked very busy. It was a supercharged city that came alive at night.

St. Basil’s in Red Square was beautiful during the day but at night it was a fairy tale. This is one of Russia’s most beautiful cathedrals.

Fabulously lit fountains switched colors to make an exciting night shot.

Square at night is spectacular with the Gums building in sparkling lights.

Leaving the theater one night we were just in time to see the moonrise near one of Moscow’s cathedrals. 

The next day we toured the park adjacent to the grounds of the beautiful Novodevichy Conventwhere many exiled or self-exiled royal wives, daughters and lovers “took the veil” (which means they chose to become a nun), to get out of their marriage, family or mistress arrangement, since divorce was not allowed. It is in this park where you will find the lovely bronze ducks, given as a gift by President George Walker Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush. We visited the Kremlin and I was surprised to find out that there were 5 or 6 churches within its walls. In the Armory, the stunningly beautiful royal clothes, jewels and carriages were housed. It was amazing to see that even the carriages were embedded with jewels.

The Novodevichy Convent where many exiled or self-exiled royal family members “took the Veil”. The park like setting was one of the most beautiful we had seen.

We had the opportunity to go into their frightfully expensive, but stunningly wonderful GUM (pronounced we discovered like “goom” not “gum” as in chewing gum). Just wandering up and down this multilevel shopping extravaganza was a treat.

Gums is a large collection of shops on one side of Red Square. The three level, indoor mall features eating establishments, large walkways and bridges from one side to another. It is frequently used as a setting for newly wed brides.

The next morning, my friend Stan Westfall and I decided to take the tour to the Sergiev Posad Monastery. My sister, Sunny, and our friend Anne Westfall opted to visit the Pushkin Museum in the morning and the Tretyakov Gallery in the afternoon. Since we were going to have separate adventures to share that evening, I reminded them to take lots and lots of photographs so we could enjoy their day as well.

In the center of the Sergeiv Posad Monastery there is a beautiful Holy Water fountain where people come to drink, to bless and to carry home a small jar of Holy Water.
