Campaign against Genocide museum : This relatively new museum helps inform visitors about the role of the Rwandan Patriotic Front in ending the 1994 genocide. The Museum is found at the Parliament House.

Kimironko Market: The best place to learn about the culture of a new place is in their markets. Kigali has many local markets where residents go to shop for local items and food stuffs. Kimironko is one of the most popular for shopping spices, herbs, vegetables, fruits, salt, meat and fish. You will also find individuals selling different art pieces and more.

Nyamata church: This is one of the many genocide sites found in the different parts of the country and one of the most prominent in Kigali. About 50,000 people were killed inside this church. They had sought shelter in this church hoping that they would be spared by the interahamwe. Unfortunately, the church turned out to be a death trap as the killers spared no one. On a visit one can still see skulls, bones, blood-stained clothes, national identity cards and machetes that were used by the interahamwe. A mass grave can be seen outside the church were most of the victims were buried.

Your full day Kigali city tour covers some of the most historically and culturally significant sites in the Rwandan capital. The exact order of your tour will depend upon your start time, but your tour will include the following activities:

Natural History Museum

Formerly known as the Kandt House, the Natural History Museum was built by German explorer, Richard Kandt. The building itself has special significance as the first modern house built in what is today Rwanda.

This historic home is home to an exhibition that aims to document the natural beauty of Rwanda from its geology all the way to its flora and fauna.

There is also an attached snake exhibition in which visitors can see some of Rwanda's slithering residents up close.

Genocide Memorial

No visit to Rwanda would be complete without paying a visit to the heart-wrenching Genocide Memorial. Part heartfelt tribute and part educational experience, this memorial recounts the tale of the infamous 1994 Rwandan Genocide, discusses the work being done to heal the country today, and offers a window into the people whose lives were irreversibly changed by the Genocide.

Campaign against Genocide museum

This museum gives visitors an overview of  the role of  the RPF in brining an end to the horrific genocide of the Tutsi population in Rwanda. The museum is based on the Parliament House that accommodated 600 RPF soldier when the genocide started – making this a poignant place to learn more about their role in ending the brutalities.

Craft Market

The Kigali Craft Markets are an excellent way to familiarize yourself with traditional Rwandan arts and crafts, as well as being a great place to do some souvenir shopping.

Kigali city was founded in 1907 as a small colonial outpost and all the history of Rwanda is collected at the Natural History Museum. It is here that you will learn about the history of the city and the country’s pre‐colonial and colonial periods. During this tour, you will get to see the city’s diverse neighborhoods from old commercial quarters to business, residential areas and slums.

Proceed to visit the Kigali genocide memorial center, a site in the heart of the city, commemorating the 1994 Tutsi Genocide, take a guided tour of the memorial which is the final resting place for more than 25,000 Genocide victims. It honors the memory of the more than one million Rwandese killed in 1994 through education and peace building.

You will later retire for a lunch break and after a few minutes of relaxation, you will continue to the Jurapark for a fantastic view of the city, view the surrounding hillsides and get an aerial view of the city from this high point. After your lunch and viewing the city, you will head to the Kimironko Giant Market, the hand art and craft market, not only is the market stocked with Rwandese handcrafts and clothing, but it is also the central area of fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, dried beans, dried fish and rock salt, so you will get to explore a quite a number of different interesting things.

Absorb unobstructed views of the green capital full of palm trees and beautiful traffic lights, as you zip between landmarks including a start with a hike to Mount Kigali which is roughly an hours hike, where you have a whole view of the Kigali city, you will later descend and drive to Nyamirambo . A drive around Nyamirambo, which is known as the old Kigali, where you will later take a roughly 1 hour walk with the Nyamirambo Women Group as you discover in and out of Kigali’s hot spots, starting your walking with some learning of Kinyarwanda words, visit a local Milk Bar , meet the Nyamirambo local venders selling their food crops, visit Nyamirambo Cassava project , see cassava leave processing for local dish, visit hair dressing saloon , and try out a free braid and meet and greet some locals as you weave around, at the end of the walk, reward yourself with some local African Kinyarwanda cuisine , as you taste the bites. You will later proceed with a drive to visit Kigali Genocide Memorial Ground, where Rwandans, victims of the 1994 geocide incident, were laid to rest in a mass grave. There are details to read from, and video clips to listen to, as to take a walk around the museum. After the museum tour, you will wind your day tour with a drive to Kimironko local market to have an experience of traditional Rwandan culture, where you will see the food crops, art crafts etc. and later visit one of the art craft shop before ending the day. How to get around Kigali city

Things to do and see in Kigali city

The Kigali city tour takes you to the major historical and cultural sites of Rwanda. You will visit Kandt house or museum of natural history where Dr. Richard Kandt the first German colonial resident of Rwanda resided. His residence at the base of Mount Jali and Mount Kigali in the heart of the city is now the Natural History Museum in honor of his work, and is one of the stops on the tour. This can take about 1 hour in total depending on how you engage the museum guide about what you are learning about Kigali and Rwanda in general.

We have opportunities to visit the craft centers where you are able to purchase souvenirs from your stay in Rwanda in turn supporting families of the women involved in making the items. Lunch will be at a local restaurant where you will have a taste of Rwandan traditional food. You are free to choose a cosmopolitan restaurant for a more diverse menu.
