Spot the big five on your safari adventure.

Safari tours in Africa are just as diverse as the continent itself, though these types of trips typically require a large sum of money. Whether you want to spend a few days gorilla trekking in Uganda or a couple weeks spotting the "big five" – lions, leopards, African elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalos – in South Africa, you'll find an array of tours to best suit your needs. To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Note: Some of the African countries in this article may require travelers to get an entry visa and certain vaccinations in order to visit. Jump to the list of visa and vaccination requirements by country at the bottom of this page for more information.

&Beyond

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

African Safari camp vacation

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

Nomad Tanzania

African Safari in Tanzania

Sign up for Nomad Tanzania's Southern Tanzania safari and you're bound to get an up-close look at Tanzania's diverse wildlife. Offering eight days of activities, including game drives and boat trips in Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, this safari gives you prime opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants, among other species. What's more, lodging at the company's campsites, select meals, and flights to and from Dar es Salaam are factored into the package's prices. Expect to pay a minimum of $5,700 per person; prices vary depending on the time of year, and the tour isn't offered in April and May.

Micato Safaris

(Courtesy of Micato Safaris)

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Rothschild Safaris

If your ideal safari vacation consists of customizing your trip from start to finish, consider an outing with Rothschild Safaris. The company offers itineraries in locales like Zambia and Madagascar , but if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the big five animals, the Essence of Tanzania safari is a good bet. This nine-day experience, which embarks from Arusha and returns there by plane, includes game-viewing drives in Tarangire National Park and accommodations like canvas tents and farmhouse lodges. Elephants, zebras and lions are just some of the animals you may spot during your journey. You'll also have the opportunity to go on a nighttime safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Lion World Travel

As the trip name implies, Lion World Travel's 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package combines sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa , with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta (home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more) and Chobe National Park, which is believed to have Africa's largest elephant population. Prices start at $4,299 per person and cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays at luxury hotels, camps and lodges. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (Cape Town to Botswana as well as Botswana to Johannesburg ).

Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

africa safari ride

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

This tour company kicks off its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from two days to nine, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Compass Odyssey

africa safari ride

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

Elephants in Kruger National Park

Spot the Big 5 in South Africa

Go on safari through Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa . This massive park is one of the premier safari spots in all of Africa and for good reason; it’s home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species, including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog.

Gorillas in Uganda

Go gorilla trekking in Uganda

Venture deep into the steamy jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of the rare mountain gorilla. With a local guide to lead you, you’ll trek into the forest to spend one unforgettable hour watching and hanging out with a family of gorillas. A close encounter with these gentle giants is an extraordinary African experience that will always stay with you.

giraffes on the Serengeti in Tanzania

Float over the Serengeti

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African Safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

africa safari ride

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Read more about our Animal Welfare Policy here .

Welcome to Africa

African landscapes parading with the circle of life promise magical moments unlike any you have imagined before. You'll find them...

Mountain gorillas in rwanda, a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with endangered mountain gorillas... on safari in rwanda with tauck.

On two safaris in wildlife-rich game reserves in Tanzania and Kenya, you'll spend the last three nights of your journey in Rwanda – home to the last remaining mountain gorillas on Earth. After gaining insights on gorilla behavior at private lectures and a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum, you'll be ready to begin your gorilla trek. Imagine hiking into the wilderness with a private porter and an expert guide for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with mountain gorillas in the wild… watching them interact with each other – and, if they so choose, perhaps with you!

Africa's "Big Five"

Meet the "big five".

Lions (Panthera leo) are often seen in Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya), Serengeti & Tarangire national parks, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania). Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs. – big and dangerous enough to keep most predators at bay. Buffalo roam the Sabi Sands Game Reserve (South Africa) and Serengeti National Park (Tanzania). black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) may be spotted in Ngorongoro Crater and the Masai Mara. leopards (Panthera pardus) are prevalent in most parks and reserves in east and southern Africa; you'll often need to look up to spot one... since they spend much of their time in trees. African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the world's largest land mammal, is a fixture throughout the Masai Mara, as well as Amboseli and Serengeti national parks. Although they are not among the "Big Five," a gorilla trek in Rwanda is one of life's memorable experiences.

Namibia: Epic Safari

Starlit skies, desert dunes, game reserves and wildlife safaris.

Embark on an epic 11-day journey to Namibia, home to desert landscapes alive with oryx, bat-eared foxes, zebras, lizards and more. Explore the red-tinted dunes of Sossusvlei. Star gaze in one of the naturally darkest places on earth. Enjoy a hands-on personal encounter with baby baboons. A truly unforgettable adventure in every way.

Dinner in the desert, Berber-style

Travel by 4x4 vehicle to a berber-style dinner in a desert camp.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Historic Safari Lodges... Legendary Hotels...

Accommodations as important as the experience....

We've carefully selected your accommodations – Africa's finest safari lodges, private game reserves, tented safari camps, classic hotels and premier resorts... many are sought-after destinations in themselves, authentically capturing the essence of their surroundings. From classic safari lodges to luxury tented safari camps... "old world" grand hotels to premier resorts... you'll experience the best of Africa, sunrise to sunset.

Cultural connections

Get to know the maasai in tanzania and kenya.

Discovering cultural legacies leads to life-changing discoveries. Visit tribal villages on the slopes of mighty Kilimanjaro, in the African bush and on plains that move with an endless procession of migrating beasts and nomadic tribes. Meet Maasai warriors, artisans and school children eager to share their customs and homeland with you in moments so heartwarming you'll return home transformed. The pulse of South Africa is, of course, in its people... in the streets and squares of Jo'burg and Cape Town where a multitude of cultures (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, European, Malaysian and Indian, to name a few) collide and mix in dazzling displays of art, music, dance and cuisine... and in the bushveld, where you'll encounter tribal traditions that sustain a proud and irrepressible people... always ready to share their customs, language, dances and songs with a warm welcome.

LATEST AFRICAN SAFARI NEWS

Dive into thrilling family adventures at Borana Lodge. Explore wildlife, landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

Thanks Pascal you are amazing!
From the moment we arrived in South Africa, our safari adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of the African wilderness, we found ourselves surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kruger National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Our accommodation was luxurious yet seamlessly integrated into the natural environment, offering us stunning views of the savannah from the comfort of our private deck. Each day began with an exhilarating sunrise game drive, where our expert guide shared his deep knowledge and passion for the local wildlife. Witnessing the "Big Five" was an awe-inspiring experience that left us in complete awe of nature's magnificence. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we felt safe while immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Evenings were equally enchanting, with sundowner drinks enjoyed against the backdrop of a fiery African sunset, followed by sumptuous dinners under the starlit sky. The cuisine was a delightful fusion of local flavors and gourmet dishes, perfectly complementing the day's adventures. The sense of community at the lodge was heartwarming. The staff were attentive, ensuring every need was met with a smile, and fellow travelers quickly became friends as we shared stories around the campfire. Our South African safari was more than just a holiday; it was a transformative journey that connected us with nature and left us with lasting memories. For anyone seeking an adventure that combines luxury, education, and unparalleled wildlife encounters, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must. We left with hearts full of gratitude and a profound appreciation for the natural world, eagerly planning our return to this magnificent land.
A great experience
Pascal was wonderful to work with! When one camp option fell through he quickly found an equal alternative for our group. He was always very responsive to my many emails and texts. I would highly recommend Safari.com.

Leché was fantastic - super helpful and so patient with me. Provided all the options and was so quick responding to any questions (of which I had many!). So grateful and I can't wait for our holiday!
Top notch service
Catherine was very helpful and responsive. Our trip was postponed due to the pandemic and she efficiently advocated for us with the game reserves to rebook our trip. Also, the SA embassy in our region required additional police certification of our reservation, the Safari.com team went to the police station and sent us the certified documents on the same day. Amazing service. Highly recommend!

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

  • I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
  • I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
  • Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money.

Insider Today

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Related stories

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.

Watch: A single trail takes hikers to 10 waterfalls near Portland, Oregon — and you can walk it in less than a day

Travel through the remote russian countryside  .

Undoubtably one of the most well-known train journeys in the world, the Trans-Siberian Express runs like a ribbon of steel through the remote Russian countryside connecting Moscow in the east to Vladivostok in the west. This impressive feat of engineering spans 9,259 kilometres (5,752 miles) and to travel its length is the epic journey of a lifetime. There are a few different routes to choose from, and the total number of days to complete the journey also varies.

One route travels through the remote Mongolian desert and stops in the capital, Ulaan Baatar. Once the very centre of an enormous empire led by Genghis Khan, Mongolia is famed for its beautiful landscapes, nomadic people and fascinating history. The country is also famous for its endless green Steppes and the white Gers (Yurts) of nomadic herders.

Natural Focus offers several rail departures exploring this remarkable region. The luxury train accommodates a maximum capacity in Russia of 100 passengers, although many departures operate with smaller numbers. Travellers can be assured of a superb rail experience and guests can expect first class service, elegant surroundings, fine dining, and the comforts and privacy of their own well-appointed ensuite cabins.

Trans Siberian Bar Lounge

Bar Lounge Car

When not out on an excursion or enjoying the view from the window of your private cabin, the perfect place to relax, unwind and meet fellow travellers is in the Bar Lounge Car. This is the social heart of the Trans-Siberian Express and the place where many fabulous memories will be made. Chat to fellow guests about the day’s adventures over a drink or play a game of cards with new-found friends before dinner.

Throughout your journey, the Bar Lounge Car and Restaurant Car will play host to several entertaining activities, such as lectures on local history and culture or even Russian language lessons. Information sessions about arrival and departure times and daily itineraries will also be given here.

The Restaurant Car

Each day, guests can make their way to the Restaurant Car for a superb continental breakfast buffet along with hot tea or coffee. For a hearty cooked breakfast, passengers can order from the onboard chef. Lunches and dinners are also served in the Restaurant Car and guests can expect a culinary experience inspired by the countries they are travelling through, and quality international cuisine. All meals are created from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, prepared by the skilful Executive Chef and the onboard team. Vegetarian and other dietary options are also available. Expert service and an excellent choice of wines accompany all lunches and dinners, as well as bottled mineral water, draught beer and soft drinks. An informal dress code applies throughout the journey.

Along the way, experience superb hospitality, get to know your fellow travellers, and enjoy an array of fascinating off-train excursions.

Moscow, Russia

On arrival at Moscow Airport, you will be met and transferred to the stylish Four Seasons Hotel Moscow. Located in the historic building of Moskva Hotel – and occupying one of the most enviable addresses in the very heart of Moscow – the hotel is a short walk from major sights including the Kremlin, Red Square and the Bolshoi Theatre.

On your first evening in the city, you will be invited to a champagne drinks reception before an exclusive Welcome Dinner. Guests can enjoy specially selected international wines that are included with dinner, as with all meals during the tour. D

Moscow Russia

This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Moscow taking in the capital’s best sights. Witness the grandeur of the Kremlin – the spiritual, historical and political heart of Moscow – including an exclusive private viewing of the Armoury Chamber that houses the treasures of the Tsars.

Visit Red Square – the symbol of Russia’s former military and political might – with its iconic architecture, including the ornate, onion-domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, and the beautiful facade of the famous GUM department store, built during Tsarist times.

Enjoy lunch at Café Pushkin, a legendary Moscow restaurant serving traditional Russian cuisine whose décor revives the atmosphere of an early 19th century mansion. Guests will also visit the extravagantly decorated underground stations of the Moscow metro – furnished with statues, frescoes and mosaics showcasing Socialist art.

If travellers have been to Moscow before and seen many of the key highlights mentioned above, an alternative tour is possible exploring sights such as the famous State Tretyakov Gallery (National Museum of Fine Art) or the Space Museum (subject to opening times).

In the late afternoon, arrive at Moscow Kazansky Station and be greeted in the ornately decorated Imperial Waiting Room with a cold glass of Russian Champagne and canapés, as you mix with the other guests and welcomed by staff. Approximately 30 minutes before departure, you will be escort to Platform 1 to board the Golden Eagle. B L D

Today, explore the picturesque and historic city of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan situated on the River Volga. Discover the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture, including exploring the legendary Kremlin Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walls of this ancient citadel is the stunning mosque, with its picture-perfect onion-domed cathedral.

Kazan is also the birthplace of one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938). Honouring his memory, enjoy a private concert of his music. There will also be time to wander through the main pedestrian area of Kazan and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city. B L D

Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg, founded in 1723 by Peter the Great, is the capital of the Urals. The Ural Mountains (known as the Great Divide) create a natural border between Europe and Asia. The cultural and architectural influences of European and Asian civilisations come together in this fascinating and cosmopolitan landscape.

Your city tour explores the famous site where the Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918 following 78 days of imprisonment. Now a church dedicated to their memory, this site provides a powerful insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. The tour will also visit the obelisk marking the geographical border – where you can drink a glass of champagne with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia.

Time permitting, there may be a chance to visit the recently opened Museum of Military Machinery. The museum houses a truly fascinating collection of military vehicles, such as tanks, aircraft, boats and even armoured trains. The museum is a must visit for anyone interested in Soviet history. Alternatively, make a short stop at the recently opened Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre, which is dedicated to the contemporary political history of Russia and its first president. B L D

Novosibirsk

This morning’s stop is the modern ‘Soviet’ city of Novosibirsk, where you can experience the life and character of the city’s rich culture. Located in the heart of Russia, the city is situated on both banks of the River Ob.

Today’s explorations take guests to Lenin Square where the imposing Opera House (an architectural marvel) is located. One of the largest opera houses in the world, the building housing two permanent ballet and opera companies. In front of the Opera House there is also an impressive statue of Lenin.

Time permitting, south of the city, visit Novosibirsk’s excellent Railway Museum – displaying an impressive array of locomotives and rolling stock from the late 1800s (including carriages of the Tsars) through to the Soviet era. Alternatively, guests might also have the chance to visit the Mineralogical Centre with its fine display of Siberian minerals. B L D

Enjoy life onboard this splendid train today. Unwind and reflect on the many sights and sounds you have experienced on your journey so far. Chat to your fellow passengers over a drink in Bar Lounge Car, learn a few words of Russian or enjoy the ever-changing landscape from the comforts of your cabin. B L D

Today, explore Irkutsk – sometimes known as the ‘Paris of Siberia’ – and take in this fascinating city’s best highlights. Tour highlights include the classic wooden architecture with its intricately carved lace-like decorations. This architectural decoration has given many of this region’s buildings a distinctive and unique appearance.

You will also visit the Volkonsky House Museum, dedicated to the memory of the aristocrats who were exiled to this remote outpost after the failed Decembrist uprising of 1825. Enjoy a champagne reception and private concert.

Alternatively, learn to cook some traditional Russian dishes with a local chef and prepare your own lunch, or visit a traditional Russian Dacha (summer country house) and gain an insight into the everyday life of a Russian family. B L D

Lake Baikal

Few natural sights can surpass the beauty and grandeur of Lake Baikal, a major highlight on your Trans-Siberian journey. Also known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, this enormous lake is the deepest in the world and holds roughly 20 per cent of the world’s freshwater. If that isn’t impressive enough, it is also home to a unique breed of freshwater seal and over 50 species of fish.

For approximately 5 hours today’s rail journey winds through tunnels and along cliff hugging tracks above the lake. This breath-taking section of rail – engineered in the early 20th century – boasts plenty of impressive vistas including snow-capped peaks along the far shore that form a picture-perfect backdrop. To top things off, the train will be hauled by a Soviet Era steam locomotive on this beautiful section of line.

Weather permitting, stop in one of the most picturesque locations by the lake for photographs and, for the brave hearted, a refreshing swim in the crystal clear and ice-cold waters of Lake Baikal. At the end of the Baikal branch line, disembark the train and travel by boat on the lake to Listvyanka, a small settlement nestled at the base of the surrounding hills. Here, guests will visit the Lake Baikal Museum and Aquarium and learn about the fascinating flora and fauna of the lake.

Alternatively, guests may choose to hike up Chersky Mount or take the chair lift, which offers some spectacular, panoramic hillside views of the lake below. Instead of lunch on the train, enjoy a delicious lakeside barbecue prepared by your onboard chefs under a covered dining area, featuring freshly smoked omul fish. B L D

Today, discover the ethnic and cultural diversity of Ulan Ude, the capital of the Buryat Republic, that offers a unique insight into its heritage.

As you explore the area, you will notice the different faces of the welcoming Buryat people. During your exploration of the Old Believers’ Village, you can learn about the culture and history of these religious people and are treated to a concert featuring local traditions and folk singing. B L D

Ulaan Baatar

Your Trans-Siberian adventure takes you into Mongolia and a visit to its incredible capital – Ulaan Baatar – once the very centre of an enormous empire led by Genghis Khan. Mongolia is a vast country of beautiful landscapes and nomadic people, rich in culture and history, and famous for its endless green Steppes, grazing livestock and the white Gers (Yurts) of nomadic herders.

Today’s tour starts at Gandan Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monasteries, home to a community of some 500 monks. The monastery’s full name – Gandantegchinlen – translates as ‘the great place of complete joy.’ Your next stop is Chinggis Square (formerly Sukhbaatar Square), where travellers can see the central monument to Genghis Khan.

Heading out of the city, drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and witness the beautiful scenery of wild Mongolia. There is the opportunity to visit a traditional Ger and meet a nomadic family or to try your hand at horse-riding, an essential part of Mongolian life.

Alternatively, there is an option to stay in the city and explore it in greater depth. Take a tour of the National Museum where you can learn about the country’s intriguing past. You will also see Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum (built between 1893 and 1903), the winter residences of Bogd Khan, the last Mongolian emperor. There may also be some free time for shopping for Mongolian souvenirs and enjoy a performance of traditional Mongolian throat singing and contortionists. B L D

Please note:  Depending on final timings provided by the railway authorities the railway journey from Russia into Ulaan Baatar may have to be substituted with a private jet charter from Irkutsk or Ulan Ude, so that the train can maintain the advertised programme for Mongolia.

Enjoy a more leisurely pace today as the train passes through the beautiful landscape of the Russian Far East. If they wish, guests can attend one of the interesting lectures or Russian language lessons. B L D

Today offers another chance to relax onboard or practice your Russian, as the train follows the Shilka and Amur rivers, close to the Chinese border. Enjoy Russia at its most dramatic and remote. B L D

The train passes directly north of Seoul, Darwin and Osaka today, the last full day on board. You will also reach the most easterly point of this mammoth journey, passing through Khabarovsk, where the train crosses the River Amur. Tonight, enjoy a final dinner on board that has been your home for the last twelve days, the Golden Eagle slowly approaches the final destination of this unforgettable journey. B L D

Vladivostok

Vladivostok is a military port located on the western shores of the Sea of Japan and is home to the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet. Moscow and Tehran Solidify Strategic Alliance Amid Global Tensions

Moscow and Tehran are continuing their work on a comprehensive bilateral cooperation agreement, although the schedule of specific events may shift, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, adding Russia intended to develop ties with Iran.

Earlier Russia's RIA state news agency reported that the agreement had been temporarily suspended due to problems faced by Iranian partners, however Iran's ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali said this was not the case, according to a statement carried by Iran's official news agency IRNA. Since the state of the war in Ukraine, Russia has moved to strengthen its political, trade and military ties with Iran in a deepening relationship that the United States and Israel view with concern. Moscow and Tehran are pushing against what they see as damaging U.S. foreign policy and want to establish what they say would be a fairer multipolar world order.

Work on a new major agreement between Moscow and Tehran was announced in September 2022 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the late President of the Islamic Republic Ebrahim Raisi. Raisi, a hardliner seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed when his helicopter crashed in May.

In January, Russia's Foreign Ministry had said a new interstate treaty reflecting the "unprecedented upswing" in Russia-Iran ties was in the final stages of being agreed, and Putin and Raisi were expected to sign it soon.

Inside a huge U.S. military exercise in Africa to counter terrorism and Russia and China's growing influence

By Debora Patta , Sarah Carter

Updated on: May 30, 2024 / 1:46 PM EDT / CBS News

Tamale, Ghana —  On a dusty airport tarmac in the northern Ghanaian city of Tamale, military special operatives from across Africa move stealthily. Shots ring out as they converge on the airport and apprehend armed militants holding it hostage.

It's not a real attack, but just one of the exercises of "Flintlock," the U.S. military's premier counterterrorism training event in Africa, which is now in its 20th year.

Special ops teams from the U.S. military's Africa Command, along with NATO allies, are conducting drills alongside soldiers from countries including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Chad, Mauritania, Nigeria, Libya and Morocco.

In the exercise CBS News witnessed, the elite forces were rescuing hostages from a simulated attack on an airport. It's a very real scenario in the vast North African region known as the Sahel, which is considered the epicenter of the global fight against ISIS and al Qaeda franchises.

The Sahel, region in Africa between Sahara and Sudanian savanna, political map

The Sahel stretches from Mauritania in the west through Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, all the way to Eritrea and Djibouti on Africa's east coast, and it is home to the fastest growing and most deadly terror groups in the world.

Ghana is one of the few countries in the region that has managed to dodge the rapid rise of violent extremism — blocking any potential incursions before they reach its borders.

Gen. Frank Tei of the Ghana Armed Forces told CBS News that was vital, because "once you allow terrorist activities in a particular country to fester and blossom, then that place can become a base from which a lot of other terrorist activities can spread across the globe."

That's exactly what the U.S. fears and is trying to help prevent.

The deputy AFRICOM commander, Lt. Gen. John Brennan, told CBS News that the Flintlock exercise is not only about training African forces to defend themselves and combat terrorism, however.

"We offer things that are meaningful in the long term — sharing democratic values, instilling rule of law," he said.

But that hasn't worked out so well over the past decade. There have been 11 coups in the Sahel alone over that period, and at least 14 leaders of those armed government overthrows were trained at Flintlock.

Brennan told CBS News the military tracks these leaders, and while there are strict rules of engagement with any country in which the government has been toppled by a military junta, "the hope is that you keep contact with the military partners and then you pull them away from military-led governments, which never last."

So how can the U.S. ensure the skills taught at events like Flintlock are not later weaponized and used to subvert democracy?

Brennan is quick to point out that executing a coup is a political maneuver, not a military one.

"We teach them how to protect their forces in combat and then conduct successful counterterrorism operations. That has nothing to do with overthrowing a government. It's just some of the people we've trained are military and they're involved in some of the coups," he said. "But history has shown … democracy ends up prevailing in a lot of countries."

Flintlock has expanded to include maritime training — including rappelling onto a moving warship hijacked by armed militants. American forces, along with Italian and Dutch soldiers, put African troops through their paces on a frigate off the Ghanaian coast.

Soldiers rappel onto the deck of a moving warship during the annual U.S.-led Flintlock training exercises for African forces, hosted this year by Ghana, in late May 2024.

This aspect of the exercises is increasingly important, given that the Sahel region runs all the way to the Red Sea, where the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been launching attacks targeting international shipping and U.S. naval vessels.

The annual Flintlock training operation — hosted this year by Ghana — could not have come at a more crucial time for the U.S. military, as American influence is arguably in deep decline across the vast African continent .

The U.S. is up against stiff competition. China offers Africa's national leaders trade agreements and Russia offers military aid, and all with very few strings attached. Washington, meanwhile, has been booted off one key front line in the fight against terrorism, after the more than 1,000 troops AFRICOM had stationed in Niger were ordered to leave the country by September following a coup there last year.

People, some carrying Russian flags, demonstrate in Niger's capital Niamey to show their support for the military rulers who seized power in a coup, on Aug. 3, 2023.

The U.S. has two military bases in Niger, including a drone command center in the city of Agadez that cost more than $110 million to set up.

Russia quickly stepped in to exploit the power vacuum created by the coup. Mercenaries from the former Wagner Group , now called Africa Corps and run by the Russian government, arrived in Niger in April.

In a scenario that was not long ago unimaginable, the Russian and American forces now occupy opposite sides of the same sprawling air base .

That has sent alarm bells ringing in Washington, and U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer stressed to CBS News that African nations should understand that Russia's offer of security forces does not come completely without strings attached.

"It's important that our African partners understand that what the Russians are offering is, maybe regime protection — it's certainly not national security," Palmer said.

She said African countries do pay for the services offered by Moscow, and at a cost that "is extraordinarily high."

Niger is rich in uranium, which can be used to make nuclear weapons. What Russia provides is military muscle in exchange for mineral wealth , but unlike the U.S., the deal comes with no potentially tricky human rights questions being asked.

"But time will tell that that decision is probably not a good one," Brennan said. "So, you don't feed your kids ice cream for dinner every night because they want it, right? You feed them vegetables, you feed them spinach, things that are good for them … instant gratification is probably not a recipe for success."

U.S. law restricts the provision of military aid to armed forces believed to be guilty of human rights abuses, but many leaders on the continent accuse Washington of having double standards — saying the U.S. withholds aid from some African nations while giving Israel billions of dollars despite global condemnation of its actions in the war in Gaza .

It's a charge that Brennan disputes.

"I don't think there's a double standard," he told CBS News. "I can tell you our values and the people we do partner with — even after coups — we're still able to influence them."

African countries argue that it isn't just training they need, but resources and modern military equipment if they hope to counter rising extremism.

Brennan stressed that the U.S. carries with it the weight of the entire NATO alliance, unlike its competitors, but he conceded that Washington must "be able to resource our partners appropriately, and really expand the relationship with them ... to help make Africa prosperous, free and a partner of choice."

With Flintlock, the U.S. promises long-term investment in the African continent. But that long-view security strategy is competing for African partnerships amid a fast-growing terror threat, on a battlefield crowded with malign actors.

How a Russian Operative Worked to Shape Moscow’s Story in Europe

(Bloomberg) -- A Russian intelligence operative who’s leading a Kremlin disinformation campaign in Africa has helped run influence operations in Europe for years, according to documents seen by Bloomberg and government officials familiar with the matter.

Artem Kureyev, identified as a Russian Federal Security Service agent in an Estonian court case in 2022, has had frequent contacts with at least half a dozen European journalists, arranged and covered travel costs for some of them to visit occupied territories in Ukraine, and at times appears to have offered to pay for planted news articles, the documents show.

On other occasions he has adopted more subtle methods to try to sway coverage, by arranging interviews, flagging and debating topics in the news or organizing press events.

The Group of Seven nations and the European Union have made combating Russian disinformation and influence operations a top priority ahead of a leaders’ summit in Italy this month. Those efforts have included publicly exposing Russian campaigns and methods, sanctioning outlets and individuals, and coordinating responses to Moscow’s actions, as well as striving to prevent disinformation spreading on major technology platforms.

Still, countering such disinformation campaigns isn’t easy as they’re aimed at sowing confusion and doubt in target audiences rather than convincing people of a particular set of facts, in order to polarise societies on issues such as migration, war or the West’s relations with the rest of the world.

The documents provide deep insight into the operations and methods of one Russian intelligence operative involved in influence campaigns in Europe. There will be many others like him running similar operations across the continent and elsewhere.

The US State Department in February called out Russia’s intelligence services for providing material support and guidance to a new information agency called “ African Initiative .” It said the project spread “deadly disinformation” about the US and Europe, including on a mosquito-borne viral disease outbreak in an attempt to undermine public health programs.

It named Kureyev as the initiative’s chief editor and said the project had also recruited members from the “disintegrating enterprises” of the late Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash last year.

The Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, and African Initiative didn’t respond to requests to comment on Kureyev.

Kureyev was also named by The Insider investigative website in January as a contact of a Latvian lawmaker in the outgoing European Parliament, Tatjana Zdanoka, that the outlet accused of cooperating with Russian intelligence. Zdanoka, who didn’t run in the weekend’s European Parliament elections, denied the allegations in a Facebook statement . Her office said in an email that Zdanoka saw Kureyev once in Brussels at an event in the European Parliament but beyond that she doesn’t known anything further about him.

The Kremlin denies Russia is engaged in disinformation campaigns in Europe. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, in January dismissed espionage accusations against Zdanoka as a “witch hunt” comparable to the McCarthyism era in the US in the 1950s. “How many people were arrested and thrown into prison on charges of having relations with communists or the KGB?” he told reporters. “This is the same thing.”

One of the authors of The Insider’s story, ex-Bellingcat reporter Christo Grozev, claimed last year that a journalist from North Macedonia called Darko Todorovski had received payments to get stories published in Bulgaria.

A Russian document seen by Bloomberg indicates that Kureyev had agreed to pay Todorovski 300 euros for articles in two publications. It’s not known if or when such payments were made.

Todorovski said he took part in three visits to military zones in Ukraine organized for journalists by Russia’s Defense Ministry. He knew Kureyev through these press tours as someone with a media company who’d been “collaborating with many journalists from different countries, including the West,” he said Monday in emailed answers to questions.

Todorovski said articles he wrote about these visits were published in Bulgaria, though he denied Grozev’s allegation about payments. “Statements without evidence that I received money and instructions are not serious,” he said.

According to the documents, correspondence between the two men from 2021 to 2023 includes instructions for distributing and finding articles in Russian and English translations on fringe websites such as londonnewstime.com and veteranstoday.com, as well as hotel bookings made by Kureyev for two of Todorovski’s stays in Russia in April last year.

Todorovski said he had an invitation at the time to take part in TV programs about Asia “and there was a conference and working meeting at the university.” He added that since he takes part in many conferences and forums, he cannot know who pays for all his hotels. Todorovski said he met Kureyev in 2022, in Russia.

Some of the exchanges echo the techniques of a typical pro-Russian propaganda campaign, which often include fabricated news stories planted on fringe websites and then amplified through social media posts or picked up by state media outlets.

One European government official said Kureyev and Todorovksi were last year involved in working on a website called “antibellingcat,” dedicated to discrediting the investigative outlet.

Todorovski said he left the project a year ago and he believed it was no longer active.

The European official, who asked not to be identified because the information is sensitive, said Kureyev has had contact with Russia’s GRU military intelligence about some aspects of his European influence operations. The GRU didn’t respond to a request to comment.

Separate documents show that Kureyev booked and paid the flights for a group of journalists to visit Crimea in 2023, long after Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine had begun. Russia seized Crimea in 2014, prompting international sanctions in response.

Kureyev has been in contact with other reporters since Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and for years prior to that.

Documents indicate that he and another intelligence officer met separately with at least one reporter from an EU member state in Russia, Turkey and elsewhere. On at least two occasions, in August 2019 and in March 2022, the journalist’s Russian contacts covered the travel costs.

Though many of these discussions relate to news coverage, such as facilitating interviews or arranging trips to Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, the documents don’t provide evidence that any of these journalists’ work is directed or funded by Moscow.

In 2021, Kureyev was in contact with journalists and intermediaries as part of a plan to engage the press in European nations around Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council, according to some of the documents. One of the intermediaries reached out to several local journalists in a Nordic country but it’s not clear if any of them replied.
